Prof. Kay has to be the most boring teacher on campus! I would purposly sit in the back of the class, so Prof. Kay would not see me falling asleep. I would fail a lot of the tests because I would put too much thought into answers. I thought I would fail the class, and ended up getting a B.
Not only is he boring, he is condescending. I am afraid to speak up in class, because if I had the wrong answer, he would no doubt make fun of me. His assignments consist of copying his "correct" answers to questions in the book onto paper. The worst teacher I've ever had.
As long as you keep up with the readings in the book and get accustomed to his dry sense of humor, the class really is interesting. His quizzes are short, so it's either a hit or miss. This class helped me in constructing arguments for other classes too. Slow at times, I enjoyed it overall though.
THE MOST BORING CLASS EVER. I have learned very little because he taught in a very, unengaging voice. VERY easy, but difficult to want to attend/stay awake. Quizzes are basically taking the pattern he wants and applying it there. LAME.
Extremely boring class that ws harder than it should have been. I got A',B',C's,D's and one F on his quizzes and came out with a B-. He passes around a roll sheet you have to initial on every day. Kay is extremely boring and I had a tough time staying awake during class.
THis is the MOST MOST MOST boring class ever. Kay ruined the course totally. I wanted to kill myself whenever I went to class. Plus he is very UN-FUNNY!He doesn't have sense of humor at all. Please don't DON'T take this class. This class is a NO-no!
Kay lectures straight from the most boring books ever and just based your grade on 4 tests and a paper at the end. Try to avoid this class at all costs.
Definetly a boring class, but I still thought Prof Kay was very clear about what he wanted from the class and what his grading policy was. The class helped me a lot with constructing and analyzing arguments. Very dry humor though.
I am taking this class in the summer and have already decided to take it CR/NC because I know I will not do well. His tests are short/medium answer based on really boring textbooks and even more boring lectures. Thank god I only have 2 more weeks of this guy.

terrible. just...bad.

You have to really enjoy the subject matter to do well in this class. He is a strict grader, untill the end and if you stick with it he gets alot easier. the tests are strait out of the book, but he still makes it hard.
Although professor Kay is a little dry, he is still quite clear about all the things he wants from his students. And when taking this course you have to remember that he doesn't have to be teaching a bunch of ragamuffin state freshmen; so ease up on the g
I am a person who considers himself able and prepared for classes such as this, regardless of the teachers arbitrary methods. He lectures about arbitrary actions in law, and the rule of law. I did well on everything he gave me, but still only managed a B? I say, his methods are beyong arbitrary. Myself and a colleague asked him about a grade we received on an initial test. HIs response? "Sometime you take a class in the instructor, and not in the subject matter." Take the class if you must, but al

OMG. I never knew a class could be so boring. Everyday its the same routine; walk in, say "hi folks", make some lame ass sarcastic remark about some random sports thing... then proceed in a monotone, and overly explainatory, lecture about disecting arguments. Yes, a critical thinking class is required to complete your GE, but for the love of god,
I learned that I could watch movies on my laptop in class without having to feel guilty. My advice is to make a friend and get them to sign you in on days you dont feel like going. The thing is though, if they want to skip the same time as you, you're screwed. He doesnt care if you read the newspaper in his class either. He is Satanically boring.
OMG, he is so boring. The first day i walked into class. He just put the damper on the subject. I was so bored in that class that I learned how to sleep with my eyes open!!! Half the class slept while two bootsy nerds controlled the whole class by answering the questions in geeky mannor. Dont take this class please!!!
he's so boringgggggg! i was bored out of mind and hes very confusing and unclear. i hate his class
This class was really boring, but he's one of the best teachers to have it with. I spaced out for probably 85% of it and still did reallly well on the quizzes, plus I there's no final, only 5 quizzes, two easy writing assignments, and no outside projects. He's really leinient about turning in homework late and making up quizzes if you miss class.
He may be boring, but hes a really fair and leniant grader. he's actually really understanding and at the end of the semester i realized that he was a really good teacher.
Eeenhh...this class was incredibly painful, but the truth is, I still use some of the basic deductive reasoning principles 10 years later.
His teaching is very unclear and he talks in riddles almost the entire time. The class is extremely, almost painfully boring!
Let's just be honest here--the dude needs to retire ASAP. Out of four years, this is by far the most excruciatingly boring class I have ever taken. Save yourselv the truble and don't take the class with him if at all avoidable.
He is VERY boring, but the class isn't bad. He grades very fairly, the whole semester I would chat with my friend during class but made a B and did fairly well on the quizzes for not paying attention at all in class. Aviod taking him if you have to in the mornings.
Come on....he is not that bad of a teacher...yeh he is a little mono tone, but I found him to be actually kind of funny, and not boring.....I'm guessing most of you guys didnt catch his jokes...very easy/lenient teacher...curves a lot, drops some quizes..really helps you think about some stuff...
Boring but easy class.
John Kay is by far the most monotone teacher I've ever had. I put my head down in every class and try to sleep because I just can't seem to keep my eyes open. The material is easy to master from the book though, if you try. I've gotten A's on all three quizzes so far this semester.
Dont take, the most boring teacher i've ever had. he mumbles all day and i fall asleep in class.
If you can, try to get another professor. I would read the textbook, and understand the content. But when he tried to explain the readings, he made it confusing. I really wish I had read these comments here first before registering for that class.
VERY BORING. i thought this would be a cool class to take, but i advise those that are interested NOT to take this course. It is an interesting subject matter, but not when your teacher speeks in mono-tone for an hour while confusing you about what you just read.
Really don't take this class, don't think you will like it because you won't, especially if you're interested in law, I'm serious. Do yourself a favor, don't take him. You can pass but its not even worth listening to the most boring prof ever. 4 take home tests & 1 term paper final. No discussions in class all listening to him doing a book analysis
John Kay is an American hero. He is without a doubt one of the most badass teachers at SF State. The best part about it is almost everybody is bored by his monotonous voice, but his incredible alikeness to **** Cheney, and the absolute dryest sense of humor I've ever heard make Kay's class a hilarious one. And remember, copy the damn model.
This professor is ridiculous. Not only is he mundane, he's quite scary to look at. You can ask questions in class if you don't mind being singled out and outright being told you were wrong, and why you were wrong, and why he is right. He gets angry if no one speaks up in class.
Thank goodness attendance isn't mandatory, because I simply could not sit through this class, and I am not one of those students who halfa**** through everything...I am usually genuinely interested and involved in my classes. All I can say is DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.
I think i can honestly conclude that this guy is a terrible teacher. His teaching dynamic is terrible...singling out students, telling them they're wrong, why they are wrong, and why he is right. Its ridiculous. The class itself is useless too! too bad its required for a GE...try to get a different teacher. this man is terrible.
Wow!!! He really needs to retire. He knows what he is talking about, but he doesn't know how to express it. Very boring. There is no point to go to lectures because he reads everything from the book. If I knew before, i would not take his class. do something better with your time.
Professor Kay is ridiculously difficult to listen to while attempting to stay awake. I really didn't learn anything at all besides what a premise and conclusion is, so I would strongly advise avoiding him completely. If you're stuck in the class...no worries..he doesn't give any students lower than a C, even if they do F work.
I remain underwhelmed and understimulated. Kay punishes out-of-the-box opinions and rewards the automatons. His method of teaching is nothing short of insulting. Thats all.
He is a verrry verrry verrry boring teacher! I didn't come to class often and I barely passed any of the exams. At the end I ended up with a C. So i was happy. Just try and listen to his lectures (even though they can be routinely boring) and do the homework.
This is a very boring class. He doesn't make the material fun at all. I was lost throughout the entire semester because his approach to teaching the material was effective at all. I would highly recommend taking this course with another instructer.
if you like getting involved in class or being engaged by the teacher, don't get this guy. he's one of the most boring teachers i've ever heard in my life. having said that, i didn't show up to the class for two months in a row, i failed every test i took and did no homework, and i got a C+.
I passed this class with an A- yet i doze off and daydreamed most of the time. Attending the class and listening to him lecture is HARDER than getting at least a B in this class. If you were to take that class in the morning and/or have a one week (three hours in a day) class with him, then wow i have respect for you.
Ok guys so he is not the most interesting person to listen to at 9 o'clock in the morning, but give the guy a break... he is doing his best to teach us a crack pot subject... I think he is a sweet old man just trying to fool us into thinking that we may actually used his subject... Poor guy...
Constantly leave class feeling like an idiot. Half of the class sleeps while the other half tries to make sense of what he is saying. When asking the class to answer a question, professor makes it a point to disprove the brave soul who tries. The content itself is difficult to comprehend w/o the professor's monotone voice and misleading statements.
This guy is a complete joke. Do not take any of his classes.
Well if this is your morning class, I assure you that you will never have the motivation to go. He keeps attendance but it doesn't count for your grade. He doesn't fail people as long as you try, but this has been the most boring class that I have ever had in my life. It is impossible to actually pay attention in class no matter how hard you try.
he's like an old grandpa who's about to fall asleep when he's talking lol
He is the most boring teacher I have ever had. His lectures will put you to sleep, seriously. I try so damn hard to listen to his lectures but they ALWAYS put me to sleep. Surprisingly I ended up with a B. I have no idea how that happened.
No homework. Quizzes and written assignments, where there are no grades below C if you try. Really clear about the topics if you can manage to stay awake. He's pretty cool. Has a dry sense of humor but maybe that's just because of his voice? Attendance is taken, and unless you have a friend in the class, you should come for updates on due dates.
Prof Kay is such a sweet person but his class can be very boring especially at 8:00 am. The subject is just hard but the class is OKAY. He doesn't give anything lower than a C. No homework no midterms or finals. just quizzes.
He's a nice guy but a bit monotone. He likes to greet the class by saying "Hello Folks" everyday. Not really my favorite class but its not hard to earn a C or higher.
yeah, he is pretty darn boring. i could hardly keep my eyes open in every class and i never really understood what he was talking about when he would try to explain arguments, etc. i felt like he just ranted on about random crap throughout the whole semester. definitely an easy A though...there's rarely ever any homework and easy quizzes...
If his voice was recorded to sedate me, Id get a good 9+ hours of sleep at night--seriously. The guy's alright but geez enough with the "if, then" statements and blindly figuring out whats missing! Theyre all riddles! If youre no good at riddles or being a smartass, dont take him. Easy C class if youre into that. No hw, but ridiculous quizzes.
dont take him...he should've reitred 1000 years ago when he was just etting to that "to old to teach" point
These books are so difficult to understand it is insane and in class, he basically repeats what is in the book so it's like you are just reading it again. 3 take home exams which are extremely difficult and a 10 page paper. You really need to have a strong desire and knowledge in philosophy to take this class. I do not recommend it.
One of the worst professors I have ever had at State.
i use to have trouble sleeping something about insomnia or something but after going to his class, i slept lika baby. man i remember one time i slept even after class was over. his voice is amazingly boring. but yeah, u can take this class if your tired and need a break or something
Wow is all i can say. He tries to teach this subject which is already hard to begin with and kind of does an ok job. Class is boring tests are extreeeemly hard and the paper is confusing and hard also. But if you at least try and get what is going on you should be ok.
the class was pretty easy and attendance is not mandatory. most of the readings are done in the class and basically you just sit through his lecture the whole class period. test are not that hard if you can understand what he is teaching and i barely came to class and i figured it out pretty quick since he allowed open notes/book for quizzes.
Don't come to this class expecting lectures on Socrates or Plato - the material is mostly on logic and arguements (ex:modens tollens stuff.)Although his lectures put me to sleep, he's not too bad.Barely any hw,no midterms or finals, just quizzes and writing assignments. Its easy to pass the class, you can't get anything lower than a C.
I like philosophy so the topics interested me... All of the exams were take home and he gives you 2-3 weeks to complete them, plus one long paper at the end of the semester. This class was a challenge but I enjoyed the material.
Just don't take this class. He's older and speaks very slow, hes a nice guy but its just hard to sit through his class and grasp the concepts that are already challenging to begin with.
OKAY, IT WILL BE HARD TO STAY AWAKE FOR THIS CLASS, HE IS JUST OLD AND MONOTONE AND UNINTERESTING BUT YOU WILL PASS THE CLASS, NO HW, LITTLE USE OF TEXTBOOK SO FIND SOMEONE TO SHARE IF YOU CAN, EASY FINAL ASSIGNMENT AND FEW QUIZES THAT YOU SHOULD GET A'S ON. ATTENDANCE IS TAKEN BUT NOT MANDATORY AT ALL, DON'T BE FOOLED. BORING, BUT TAKE HIM.
He is boring, but can be funny. The concepts are easy but he will find ways to twist your understanding of them. For example, he will mark off points for the slightest details on tests, which are usually insignificant anyways. Minimal work, and it is easy to pass, but not to ace.
I don't recommend taking this class. Mr. Kay isn't very nice, he makes you look stupid for attempting to answer a question and doesn't really answer any questions during his office hours. No hw though and the quizzes are not always hard. Just a very boring teacher with useless information.
I don't recommend taking this class. Mr. Kay isn't very nice, he makes you look stupid for attempting to answer a question and doesn't really answer any questions during his office hours. No hw though and the quizzes are not always hard. Just a very boring teacher with useless information.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT take this professor for any class. He speaks so slowly that it makes it difficult to follow his train of thought. He also merely reviews what is said in the books, rarely adding his own thoughts or clarifying a concept. The worst teacher I have had, ever.
I suggest not taking this class unless you really have to. If it has to do with your major OR if you are really interested in law and society. It is VERY boring. I did not learn anything. Its two take home tests and one 10pg term paper. Do not take it.
He is so boring, droning, and uninteresting. I found myself missing busses to class on purpose so I could walk in late and still sign the attendance sheet. He can be amusingly sarcastic, unless you are the person asking the question. Do not take this class.
John is a really nice man. He is a little boring, but you will definitely pass his class if you go. I got Ds and Cs and managed to get a C+ in his class. He will pass you! haha
Prof. Kay has taught the same thing for way too long - he himself never seems interested in the class. Not an easy "A", and terribly boring. And if you do learn anything, it will be useless. In fact, thanks to my iPhone, I learned more about zentangle and the Russian alphabet than critical thinking. Try to take this class with ANY other teacher.
Waste of time and money. BAD teacher!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! he is literally incomprehensible, unclear and useless. I tried to pay attention and when i did i did not understand anything he ways saying. i did better on the quizzes i didnt pay attention that ones that i did. the book does not help at all. and he pretty much leaves you to do an essay he gives you unclear detail about.
Two take home exams- Midterm & final. The average grade of both exams equals 75%. One 10 page research paper which is 25%. The problem with the instructor is that he lacks organization in his lectures. This results in him rarely using the whiteboard to write important notes that really should be written. Students are left lost and bored.
A take home midterm and a final exam and a 10 page term paper make up your grade. The two take home exams are worth 75% of your grade and are tricky. The term paper wasn't too bad, but it is 25% of your grade. Professor is very boring and speaks in a monotone voice. The whole class was bored. Not an easy A!
I did not understand this guy at all... His class was boring and over complicated the subject. It was semi-easy, the quizzes are tough but they're open book so just regurgitate that. He's dry and clever in his humor and it comes out occasionally but honestly, choose another class.
I'm going to save you the time of reading everyone's comments below... Just don't take this class. DON'T.
philosophy is difficult, with him is more difficult. class actually is bored, he gets angry when no one answers his question. so he picks names on the name list. that it nothing else.
Class: Goes over the Supreme Court's behavior and FDR's behavior during the New Deal. He analyzes each chapter and pulls out important quotes and tells you why the author said 'so and so'. I didn't read the book and I ended up good in the class since he covers every chapter. Just show up to class, partially pay attention and you'll be fine :)
TAKE HIM!!!!! i know him class is bored but u just have to show up and siting there. also theres quizes every chapter but he will always giving out examples and main points before the quiz. final is take home essay. i didnt really pay attention during his class but i ended up getting an B.
so his voice is not the most exciting but he clearly goes over the material if you show up and listen the only time that i started having trouble was when i started getting lazy and underestimated his clarity as well as stopped looking at the homework. if you do what he asks which isnt much it really is not a hard class. he is nice as well
he knows the material very well he's not so great of a teacher. his voice is very monotone i would often fall asleep because of it. dont take his class
Very easy class to pass. Attendance is mandatory but I really only showed up about 65% of the time. Very few homework assignments and he'll go over them thoroughly before you have a quiz. Quizzes are open note, you can use whatever you want as long as it helps you. No final, just a writing assignment. Want an easy GE? Take his class.
And remember, COPY THE DAMN MODEL!
Boring and he makes me want to take a nap. Overall his test are all out of the books but the midterm paper is long
His voice is really monotone, which makes the class a little difficult to get through. His dry sense of humor is pretty hilarious if you get it. He goes over exactly what's going to be on the quizzes, and the quizzes are also open book/note.
Super boring and monotone.
TAKE THE CLASS! Even though it can get kinda boring, he has a sense of humor and his quizzes are easy because you can use any notes you want. An easy pass :)
EASY CLASS, TAKE HIM. The class is a bit difficult to get through because of the monotone voice, but his dry sense of humor can be pretty great. Quizzes are open book/note and he goes over exactly what to do beforehand.
His voice is very low and soft and can put you to sleep at times but this class is very simple. He goes over EXACTLY what will be on the test the class before. I wouldnt show up to class for days and come a to class right before the test and I was golden. Final was really simple too. Pretty boring but very easy.
This guy is the Worst! Don't even talk in class because he will tear you up in front of the whole class and make you question what you are asking. Makes no sense and EXTREMELY boring. Save yourself
At first I thought maybe the feedback I'd read about him was just exaggerated, but it was pretty tough to focus in this class. There wasn't really any structure to the class, even though he lives by the syllabus. I did fairly well in the class, but my goodness... It was so hard to figure out what the hell was going on in that class.
One of the most boring classes I have ever taken, His voice is very monotonous and the subject matter is incredibly boring. There are group presentations, three papers, and a final paper. There were 50 people in my class and only 18 showed up on average unless a paper was due. I am not the type of person to skip class, but I skipped half of his.
He was very monotone and made me fall asleep the first few weeks. I passed the class but never went to class which made it very difficult. He makes attendance mandatory and only has a midterm and a final. He makes lame jokes and laughs at them.
Out of all the classes I've taken at SF state, probably ever as my career as a student, this is the most boring class I've taken. Really OLD, MONOTONOUS, BORING, REPETITIVE, and obvious in what he teaches. I would sooner kick myself in the 'nada before taking this class again. Honestly better to choose a harder class for the same GE req.
He's an easy grader and will do anything to help you pass, but his class lectures... wow. Hardly anyone can follow his lectures, and the required reading (in order to understand his lecture) is very long and boring. When he asks the class for a question, there is silence because no one is able to answer it. Yes, It's that type of class.
Tough class to get through. That's pretty much what all I can say. He assigned 3 papers and 1 group presentation. There was also a term-paper, but he decided to not have us do it. No mid-term and final. Professor is nice, but his lectures are boring. I almost feel bad for him because no one was into it at all. Only take this class if you have to.
Very boring lectures. Get on his good side and participate in class and you will do well. He is a tough grader but talk to him after class if you feel like you deserve a better grade and he will most likely change it. He changed my B to an A on a test. Get on his good side by participating and bringing your book to class to get an A in the class.
You would think this class would be easy because it is Philosophy but John Kay's lectures are unclear and unhelpful. He is extremely monotone and more than half the class never knows what is going on and what his point is when he is teaching. He tries to grade easier on tests, but most people end up with C's. Usually I am an A student too.
I the semester started with 25 people and ended with 9, this is due to his boring lectures. There are three papers and one final, pretty easy if you do the reading. Attendance counts. Kay is very approachable and very understanding. It's sad how boring the lectures are since the material is quite interesting.
The work is not that much and a very easy B, with a little bit of work you can easily get an A.
Truthfully a really easy class and the workload was not that much. Just do the work and you can definitely pass the class.
In all honesty this class isn't hard to pass. But jeez he makes it hard for you to want to go to class. He encourages participation but often gives you sarcastic remarks when you do. His lectures are incredibly boring and I felt like he could've explained the subject matter so much more simply than he does (half the class is confused).
He is a good teacher and easy to understand if you are paying attention but make sure you can stay awake. His lectures are monotonous and slow with the occasional sarcastic or funny remark. It is an easy class but the grading is specific and you need to know what you are doing.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. People told me it was easy to pass but let me tell you he is absolutely terrible at teaching. You will not understand a single thing he says. He is also very old so he talks VERY slow like a snail and it felt like my time was being wasted. Attendance is mandatory because he makes you sign in. I had to cheat in order to pass.
This was my first class of the day and it was so boring. Don't take this class. I felt like everything we went over in class was the same thing over and over again. I didn't understand anything and I'm the type of student who puts school first. BUY the book. You'll use it every class. There's no homework. We only took three quizzes.
Mr. Kay should certainly spend the final days of his retirement outside of the classroom. Though he may be very qualified and knowledgeable about law and the constitution, the way he conveys his knowledge to students is very dull. John is very soft-spoken and speaks slowly during lectures. It is very easy for students to get disengaged and bored.
Listen to the rest of the feedback, they're not kidding. This is a class you survive, not learn from.
SO... i took this class for cr/ nc. and it was amazing. there was about 3 papers and no written final. well theres a in class powerpoint you must do and thats basically the final for the class. his lectures put me to sleep, he has a very soft voice. VERY. and all he does is lectures. i went to class once a week. (mon wed fri class ) it was okay.
Professor Kay is a nice man and knows what he's talking about, but it's time for him to retire. His voice is very soft, and his lectures are difficult to follow. Graded only on three papers and participation (attendance + a presentation). He grades easy, but the class is just... painfully boring. Don't need this class for your major? Don't take it.
Professor Kay seems like a really nice older gentleman and he is really cool and knowledgeable however he speaks VERY SOFTLY and low. His lectures were the MOST boring ever and extremely monotonous. Took his class and got a C but learned nothing and felt it was a huge waste of time! Not to mention his class was at 8am and extremely boring.
John Kay embodies the stereotypical old college professor. He is definitely sarcastic with his dry humor, and class can be slow. However, you can easily pass with an A. There are barely any assignments . The quizzes can be confusing but listen to his instruction and you'll understand. The topics you learn can be redundant. Also copy the damn model!
