I actually liked biology after taking this class! So long as you study for the tests, you should do fine. And attendance isn't mandatory, but it helps an awful lot!!! I totally recommend him. At least, he's better than any of the other Bio 101 profs here.

I love this man! His powerpoint presentations make it so easy...never have to even read the book. The tests are all definations, very straightforward. too bad he doesn't teach 102...Take this class you wont regret it

Extremely great teacher! One of my favorites at Loyola! Makes me almost want to take Micro-Biology just to be in another of his classes!! If you can get him for 101, definitely take it!

He's a pretty good lecturer, and it's easy to take notes in his class. Sometimes he goes to fast, but if you tell him, he'll slow down. Watch out, b/c he randomly calls on ppl to answer questions. Other than that, he's ok.

His lectures are very clear, and if you study then you will have no problem getting a good grade in his class. He does talk a little fast but he will slow down if you ask him to. If you are learning a boring topic he will make it funny to keep you awake

Kelly is a fantastic teacher. He is entertainint, easy to undertand and very fair. If you take good note, pay attention the class will be great. He is great in office hours and always willing to help. TAKE HIM!!

If you don't take him for Bio 101 why even take it. Prof. Kelly is an EXCEPTIONAL teacher, and I am greatful I took his class. Will answer every question students have ad nauseum. You won't be sorry if you take this professor.

Kelly is great! I would highly reccomend taking him over any other biology professor. You learn a lot, but the matierial covered is fair to any introductory class. If you attend the lectures alone, you could pull off a C easily WITHOUT even studying.

Dr. Kelly is by far one of the best teachers I have had at Loyola. I highly recommend his Bio class!!! Study the notes from lecture and read over the corresponding parts from the book and you'll do fine.

Kelly's an awesome teacher who doesn't mind slowing down if students need more time. After going over the info he will try to make sure you understand it. he is very prepared with good powerpoints. Take good notes. He doesn't curve much or at all though.

Great Teacher, and BTW he does curve grades, averaging the class to 75%. His lectures are clear, and his final exam was a breeze: used many of the same questions from previous and practice exams.

His lectures are the most boring classes I have ever sat in. They are too long. Anyone can read off a powerpoint. You don't need a PHd to read the book off your powerpoint presentations. Tests were hard, lectures were bad, but hes a nice guy.

this class was clean and direct. What was on the notes was on the test and those were the things you needed to know. Knowing how things work and the processes he teaches you is really important. Study hard and go to every class and you should be fine.

interesting guy...i loved him to death...but the class was absolutely impossible...however...the final wasnt as bad as the other teachers....he attempts to make every class fun, but its just too long and drags...i got an A in ap bio but barely made the C- in his class...did i mention he takes questions from the mcat. oh yeh, dont expect a curve!

I was totally freaked out to take this class cause I haven't been in school for 7 years. Kelly was awesome and made the class a breeze. As long as you go to lecture and discussion, you're set. All the stuff in his notes is what's on the tests. No sweat. He's also super helpful outside of class!

Excellent teacher! He is extremely organized and friendly. His tests are reasonable but you must go to all classes, read the chapters, and do the cd that goes along with the text it helps so much! He seems a bit shy and flustered outside of class and if you ask him questions you better think about them first but he is very helpful.

Nice guy, clear in lectures but tests are hard as hell. Only 2 exams, 100 questions each- not easy. 3 quizzes, only worth 10 points. If you're intense about bio it's a really good class but be prepared to work your ass off.

He is HARD. he moves fast in lectures, ur hand will probably fall off writing notes. his exams are killers, and u will probably get a few gray hairs after taking him if u r at all concerned about ur grade. class avg. a C. still, his office hours r open if u want help, & he is helpful. bio in gen. is tough. but he doesnt make it any easier or harder

he's fun and keeps the class going altho he moves quick and sometimes its kinda hard to follow but he does have lecture images on powerpoint(they include some text) very helpful when you study for tests!Its really cute how he repeats really importants things about 3 or 4 times making sure we got it...

He's a very nice teacher. Reading the textbook is not required because exams are based on his lecture. He gives powerpoint slides ahead of time so you can print them out and follow along in class. Exams aren't too bad if you study.

microbio: excellent class, covers many important topics in biology, very essential. kelly's teaching style is very clear, he has us read lots of articles which is great. he will learn your name and call on you randomly, so be attentive. great sense of humor too.

Hard to understand sometimes, due to somewhat ambiguous slides and lecture style. A lot of learning on your own from the book. Overall pretty tough class , because their are no drop test so if you screw one up it's like fighting an uphill battle just to pass the class. Also his exam question are very tricky which make the no drop exams even worst

AMAZING! explains the material well. he hasppt slides posted before LEC- very helpful in taking notes, &for studying. Tests are straight from the ppt. Biology in general is hard, and means alot of studying, you can't just expect to get A just like that. atten isnt mandatory but there're clicker/pink sheet points, so go toclass. awesome help outside

He is a really good teacher. Tests are kind of long, but they are not hard. Take really good notes and skim the book. His lectures are not boring. He cracks jokes and interacts with students during lectures. Quizzes before lectures start, which are pretty much similar to his tests but much shorter. Highly recommended for Bio.

Prof.Kelly is a very nice, down to earth man.His class is VERY straight forward,yet his tests are horrendous.Felt like no matter how much studying,i'd still do bad. Pwrpoint slide print outs are all you need for the class and the clicker.Useless to buy the book. 3quizzes,2tests,1 final.Clicker points(very helpful to grade) and in class assign.

Dr. Kelly is a great teacher! He made the class really interesting! You don't need the book at all because all of his lectures and tests come from his powerpoints! IF you come to class and pay attention, you will do well. The tests are lengthy and challenging but if you study you will do well.

If you took AP Bio in high school, he's easy. I didn't though and he talks VERY fast and goes through a ton of material at one time. He only has 2 tests and the final that make up pretty much all of your grade so you don't have room to mess up.

Dr. Kelly is an amazing professor! He covers a lot of material but explains it very well and he is HILARIOUS! Always available for help. Only 2 tests, 3 quizzes and the final was worth about 40% so no room for error, but if you study his power points, which he posts, an A is very possible. Highly recommended and well worth it!

Dr. Kelly is a great professor. He is willing to meet you outside of class for help. You do NOT need to buy the book. HIGHLY recommend him for Bio 101. You must attend class though. 2 Exams, a Final, and Three Quizzes (10 pts each) make up the majority of your grade. Plus in class "essays" that are just like attendance points& i-clicker questions.

Kelly is fantastic! He is so clear and he definitely knows his stuff. He is the best biology teacher I have ever had. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he has clicker questions and easy in class writing things (which he doesn't really care what you put down and long as its relevant) that you get points for. Your grade is mostly tests, but take him!

Dr. Kelly is literally one of the best professors I have ever had. You do have to study to get an A, but as long as you take notes and do the Mastering Biology Homework, (don't just look up the answers)you will do fine. You don't really need the book. He posts his powerpoints online and those are all the information you need. Take him. He's amazing

He is a very good teacher. Is concise and his tests only include things that he went over in lecture. Includes lots of points (clickers, Mastering Bio) to help boost your grade. Discussions are not mandatory but the questions are helpful and sometimes end up on tests. Definitely would recommend, he's an awesome teacher!

Dr. Kelly is very good at explaining complex things and breaking them down for students. You must go to class for clicker points and in class assignments but discussion isn't mandatory (you should go anyway). You don't need the book, only the notes he gives you and he only tests on what he's covered in class.

Professor Kelly was an amazing professor, although his exams were tough, his lectures were extremely thorough and very clear. Definitely wish he was teaching BIOL 102 this semester, I learned a lot in his class. His exams are long, but he covers everything that will be on it in class, so it's extremely important to attend his class. Final was easy!

Dr Kelly is the best teacher I've had so far. He is amazingly clear and makes complex things simple. There are many opportunities for points with clickers and homework, and his exams are not too difficult. I don't even think it's necessary to buy the book, as his tests are based on what he lectured on. He seems intimidating, but isn't. Take him!

GREAT lecturer and is such a nice personteacher. He only offers two exams before the final, so it is important to study for both. He has clicker questions and in-class questions for participation points, so you have to go to class. His tests consists of 100 MC questions. Pay attention in class, study, and you'll most likely get an A.

Dr. Kelly is a great Biology professor. The tests are completely based off of his powerpoints and his powerpoints are very helpful. I would HIGHLY recommend printing out the powerpoints prior to class and take notes on them. The tests are 100 Q's MC and there are two tests and the final which is 150 questions. I wish I could take him again!

He's a great lecturer. He gets all the info to you in a way that it makes sense. Sometimes he can go fast but if you go to his office hours he'll definitely help. His tests are long but not too hard. Spend at least 2 days in advance reviewing slowly. Bio 101 can be challenging but he's better than most bio professors at explaining the material.

Kelly is a great lecturer. He really knows his stuff and you can tell he is passionate about bio. Attending lectures are a must, his tests revolve around his power points but it won't be helpful if you don't attend class. He goes fast but is easy to approach for questions. I thought his tests were really tough with trick questions. I've had better.

Dr. Kelly is very clear on what is expected of you. His lectures are very thorough and interesting. The quizzes for this class get easier as the semester progresses and the exams get harder. Although there is a textbook associated with this class, I never opened it because he gets his exam material strictly from his lectures. No extra credit given.

Dr. Kelly is one of the best professors out there. He is very straight forward and gives amazing lectures. He is very enthusiastic about the subject and tries to share his attitude. Tests are based on the lecture slides - I would recommend to print out the slides before the class and record the lecture to go over it again before the test. Got an A.

Kelly has the most contagious laugh and laughs at the silliest things. He's very clear. To do well, pay attention to every detail and study the questions you get in discussion. Participate! I don't study too much and manage to do fairly well because he's good. But if you want an A, study well and you'll be fine.

I started my Freshman year unsure if Biology was the right major for me but Dr. Kelly made me fall in love with bio. His lectures are so clear and he truly cares about his students. Go to office hours! He's awesome! 2 exams and a final and exams are detailed in content. If you attend class,do homework, and read the book, you'll be more than fine.

Taking this class at the same time as organic chemistry was amazing. Dr. Kelly really focuses on the chemical side of introbio, so I felt like the two classes together really helped. He's a funny guy and great lecturer, but a little condescending one on one. However, I enjoyed his class and would take again.

Dr. Kelly is simply one of the best bio professors at luc. He KNOWS his stuff and LOVES it- and that passion shows through his lectures. He has tophat and mini discussion questions throughout lecture that not only are easy points but immensely increase your understanding throughout the lecture. He also has mastering, but its not too bad. Take him!

Kelly's super clear, and a great Bio professor. Top Hat and in class essays in every class, but they provide a good participation buffer. Exams are pretty easy and straightforward, and you can understand what he's looking for from his powerpoint and practice test questions in discussion.

I enjoyed Kelly's class. Top Hat, Mastering, in class essays (which are just a sentence or two, and you don't need to get them correct), and a few exams. The exams aren't horrible, but as long as you take notes on the powerpoint and study those then you'll be fine. He just asks A, B, C, A and B, B and C questions that can sometimes be hard.

Dr. Kelly is a swag god legend. He covers a lot of material before his exams, but the concepts were never too difficult to understand. The hardest part about this class is the lab component which features an angelic woman who goes by the name of Mary Ann. Labs are long and I always felt like a chicken running around with my head chopped off.

He is such a great lecturer, you enjoy going to class and learning. The tests cover a lot of material but are not overly difficult other than the fact that a lot of questions end with either all of the above or two of the above which can be tricky. If you study and keep up with lectures you should have no problem though.

Dr. Kelly is a great professor! He utilizes Tophat & in-class essays every class so make sure you show up to get the points! He only gives 2 exams & a final so the exams are pretty dense. During lectures he is really good about repeating concepts and phrases multiple times to make sure people understand. He cares about the success of his students.

He is the best biology professor at loyola!! His class was easy and straightforward. His lectures are super clear and only tests materials on his powerpoints which is great. Really helpful during office hours and his tests are not bad if you study well. Final is cumulative but has exact questions pulled from the first 2 test.

Overall he is an amazing professor. Going to discussions are a must. He gives out practice quizzes which have questions almost identical to the exams. TOPHAT questions are part of every lecture so make sure that you attend. The exams are over broad topics and covers the basics. Review his powerpoints and discussion quizzes and you will be fine.

He's the best professor that actually teaches. His tests aren't the easiest, but if you study you'll be fine. There are definitely other easy A profs but Kelly prepares you on the material. Getting an A is totally manageable you just have to work at it a little. His discussion questions are similar to his test questions and definitely go to class!

Dr. Kelly's lectures are really straightforward and he is clear about what will be on the exam and what he expects you to know inside and out. I never felt blindsided in this class & always felt prepared going into exams. A great example of a class where you put in work, and get the grade you want. Take this class if you need more bio credits!

Weekly homework assignments and in class questions for participation supplement test grades. Three tests all multiple choice for the semester and no essays, overall an easy class. Lectures are very thorough and discussion questions are good practice for the exam. Nice and helpful if you have questions

Dr. Kelly is awesome. He really makes you understand whatever he's lecturing about. He doesn't go too fast, but make sure you print out his lecture images! Those are a lifesaver. There are 2 exams plus the final and they're on 5 or 6 chapters at a time, so STUDY HARD! He's great though.

Super nice guy. Very funny during lectures. He brought his 8 or 9 year old kid a couple times when he was off school and he was freaking adorable. Great professor, would definitely take again.

Kelly is a funny professor that obviously is passionate about what he teaches. He goes over powerpoints in class but gives extra notes during class that you should write down because it's on the exams. Has tophat and in-class essays so attendance is mandatory. Only two exams in the class too and no quizzes. His discussion ?s are on the exams.

Professor Kelly was an amazing teacher. He was funny and made class interesting. He only told you what was on the exams, so it was important to listen to lecture. He only has two exams, which can be a lot of material, but I liked it. There were no quizzes. His final was easy too!

Very passionate about microbiology and makes it a fun subject to learn. Very clear on what to expect on exams. Exams fair and easy if you study lecture material. Quizzes were insanely hard, however. 4 quizzes based only on research articles. Very specific questions, not enough time. I'm a 4.0 student and barely passed these quizzes!!!!

Dr. Kelly is overall a great professor. Although his exams can be pretty rough, his lectures are great and engaging because he uses Top Hat. If you study, you should have no problem with the exams. His lecture slides are broken down solidly so that it is short and to the point. He is also pretty funny and doesn't assign much homework.

Really good at lectures. I wish he gave more tests though. (2 exams + final). If you suck at multiple choice exams avoid. Make even little mistakes on even one test- say goodbye to that A.

Really helps you understand the material. His lectures are clear. He tells you what you have to know for his exams. Mastering biology homework-10% of grade. Tophatt in class online questions and written in class one sentence questions-10% (easy pts). His 2 tests are 100 MC -20% of grade each. Final 200 MC-40%. Discussions are MC practice for tests

I wrote him a biology themed song to get him to bump my grade up. He did not bump it up. Sometimes brings his little kid to class which is super cute. Makes some funny jokes and is an engaging lecturer. Solid prof but I'm still crying over my grade.

He is a great choice for taking BIOL 101. His exams can be heavy though, and it is full of questions with choices like "both a and b" or "a, b, and c," so you really need to know your stuff and avoid missing small details. As long as you study and thoroughly review the material, you will be fine.

I really enjoyed Dr. Kelly's class this semester! Although there is a ton of material to learn in this course, Dr. Kelly does a good job at explaining things. The discussion questions are VERY similar to the exam questions, so be sure to review those before exams!

Course grade is composed of 2 midterms and the final, which is CUMULATIVE on 17 chapters of biology. I suggest picking a different prof unless he is your only option. No extra credit, EXTREMELY DIFFICULT MIDTERMS AND EXAMS. Mediocre lectures. Don't take his class unless it's your absolute only option. Discussion sessions are semi-helpful.

Dr. Kelly was great and I would definitely take him again. His lectures would get long but it wasn't horrible. Tests were 100 multiple choice questions which was nice because if you got one wrong it was only 1%. In his discussion, he would give sample exam problems which was nice. He would always tell jokes too.

Dr. Kelly is one of the best biology teachers I have had. I wasn't doing well in the beginning and he sat down with me and made me feel like I could pass his class and be a successful. He really cares for his students and going to his office hours is one of the best things you can do for this class, even if it's just to talk to him.

Prof Kelly is definitely one of the better Loyola bio professors. His lectures are very engaging but his exams are 100 questions long, and are AB, AB&C style, which sucks. Even though I have done poorly on both, my grade is still better than it should be thanks to in-class essay questions and TopHat questions.

John Kelly is an amazing professor. His class is out of 500 points: 100 from exam 1, 100 from exam 2, 200 from the final, and 100 from misc (launchpad, tophat, and in-class writing assignments). Teaches the material well but there is very little wiggle room if you don't do well on the tests. Overall, a very passionate professor.

Honestly, he's a really funny guy and his lectures aren't too dry, but there is a lot of material covered in each class. Like a lot, so make sure to study the material well in advance for the tests because there are only two of them outside of the final. The tests are multiple-choice but it is difficult multiple-choice so study up.

Easily one of the best professors I've ever had, but man that class is VERY difficult. His exams are LONG (100-150 questions). You have 2 exams not including the final and homework once a week with participation points. VERY DIFFICULT TESTS! You have basically master the subject to get anything above a B. He's funny and a great teacher but... no.

Makes Lectures very entertaining explains very well. tophat and short responses during the lecture are graded. exams are tricky. 2 exams, each 100 questions and final 150, 100 of the new material 1.5 points per question, 50 from old exams one point each question. 200 points for the final. you need to work hard and recommend going to discussions.

Dr. Kelly is a solid choice for a general biology class. He is extremely funny and my favorite part of the class is when he would laugh. Very accessible outside of the class and could talk for days about biology, very passionate! However, since he gives great lectures, he asks VERY specific questions on the exams. Make sure you know your material!!

A solid choice, at least for 101. I found his lectures to be pretty clear, and if it isn't, he always makes time in class for questions. Tests can be confusing despite being multiple choice, but frequent homework and top hat points balance it out

Kellys probably the best bio lecturer on campus. The book helps a ton, but you'd learn so much just from his lectures. Hes very nice to talk to. The only caveat is that you're graded by very few things. 3 tests (noncumulative, including final) make up 75% of your grade. You would learn tremendously from him but would have to work for an A

Great professor, he is so caring. He saw some people missed a lot of hw deadlines so he gave everyone a chance to do them. He uses Tophat for participation points (if you get Q's right you get more points) so go to class. Tests involve some questions he uses for discussion. Very nice and explains well during lectures. Tests/final are non-cumulative

John kelly actually told me personally that he makes his exams hard and that students do not do well on them, as a professor that is not a good quality. The questions on exams are formatted to trick you, if you don't test well I strongly recommend finding a different professor.

He is literally the best bio professor that teaches bio 101. His lectures are easy to understand, and you can honestly pass the class and exams by just participating and paying attention during class. I would definitely take this professor again. I wish he taught higher level bio classes.

I have a A- right now. I wish he taught other bio classes. He is one of the best professors on campus in my opinion. If you do take him, pay attention to what he says instead of wrting it all down from the slides, because the slides are posted before class. Definitely take him if you can, but remember that you need to pay attention to pass with a A

Dr. Kelly is honestly the best professor I've had. While some of the content in this class can be hard to wrap your head around, Dr. Kelly does a great job at explaining these concepts. He also does a good job at keeping the class atmosphere light and fun, and he likes to crack jokes during lecture.

I would recommend Dr. Kelly to anyone taking BIOL 101!! One of the best lecturers at LUC. He makes each topic interesting and he is super funny! There are only 3 tests the whole semester which I loved but may be a problem for some. You can make up some points with weekly homework and in-class participation. It's a good difficulty level.

Real talk, not a hard course, Dr. Kelly is really a good lecturer, but if you do bad on one test or really any part of grading you're not getting an A, would memorize the slides before tests and see content that really wasn't talked about on the exams, and the exams are pretty impossible.

Dr. Kelly is an amazing lecturer - he doesn't go through material too fast, always answers questions, and is super funny. The only downside to his class is that if you're not a great test taker, most of your grade is dependent on 3 exams (noncumulative), but I liked not having them as often. If you took AP Bio in high school, this class is review.

Dr. Kelly has good lectures but his exams are very hard. They are meant to trick you. 3 exams make up 75% of your grade, there is no room for error. Exams are 100 questions in 75 min and are A, B, C, D: a&b, E: a&b&c style, so you need to know the content. Homework is once a week. You need to buy a mastering bio subscription and tophat subscription

I love Dr. Kelly! He is the best. The class is difficult but if you took AP bio then it is just review. The majority of your grade is based on your test grades so make sure that you study hard for the tests. Honestly, the tests were not too hard if you studied.

Dr. Kelly gives clear and repetitive lectures in the best way. His lectures are engaging and he asks questions during class to check for comprehension. Dr Kelly wasn't the best, wasn't the worst. He was a great lecturer and was funny and engaging. My only issue were the tests-- they were the bulk of your grade and all multiple choice. Many questions would be "is this a, b, c, a and b, or all of the above" which made it confusing. We also didn't have an SI so that wasn't helpful. Not awful though

Really liked his lectures. He does a bunch of surface leveled questions in his discussions which are the same intensity on the exam & sometimes he pulls the same exact ones to put on the tests. No quizzes, 3 exams, no final. The only thing "hard" was managing my time in exams bc it is 100 q's in 75 minutes so you need to know your stuff

Dr. Kelly is one of the best professors I have had at Loyola. Clear expectations from the start, incredibly fair and helpful. It is easy to 'guess' what will be on the exam based on how much time he spends on a topic and nothing comes up that is surprising or tricky on purpose. He is awesome!

This is the only review I have and probably will ever write. Dr. Kelly is personable, passionate and truly cares about his students. I had some god-awful professors at Loyola, but he is the exact opposite. Clear expectations, FANTASTIC lectures and tests/essay questions are fair IF you put in the effort to study. Amazing teacher and human being!

I never went to class bc it was early but when I did I genuinely learned things and was interested in content. go to class it will help your grade. such a caring professor great option only thing was that the SA's were sometimes ehhh but again to class and you will succeed. a great option for an bio elective.

He is SO funny. Honestly, this class is pretty average in terms of difficulty. 3 exams 17.5% each, 15% total group quizzes, 3.75% daily participation, 2.5% 5 min pres, 1.25% group ranking, 25% lab score. Tests are fair if you study and pay attention in class; but likes to do a lot of a,b,c, a and b, a and c type questions.

Kelly is a great lecturer but I feel like what was said in lecture did not translate to how the exams were, specifically the short answer. He would grade extremely harshly and many of my friends did not do well in this portion, which tanked our grades. I worked extremely hard in this class just to end with a B. Disappointed. Take Rizert instead.
