His online classes are the pits. Very unclear in what he wants the student to do, grades unfairly, and is very unhelpful. Our first week we weren't even able to take the quizzes because he didn't have everything set up ahead of time.

Tough if you have a crapy internet conection that shuts down in the middle of the tests, and you'll get no sympathy. fairly easy except for that.
he's a bit creepy and weird. And clueless. Technologically challenged.
The class itself wasn't too bad, but he was weird. He called himself "Uncle John" sometimes in the discussion boards. He's a bit unorganized, but grades on a decent curve. You'll have to deal with the oddness of this one to get a decent grade.
Had him twice. Not easy to contact and get help. Likes to change things and timelines. I liked the way he graded me at least, I don't know about anyone else, but I was supposed to get 3.7 or 3.8s in both classes and I got 4.0s.

Terrible. Stopped accepting assignments even though Blackboard went down. Very biased and not tolerant of non-liberal views. Disorganized, unhelpful, and more than a little creepy. Uncle John?????
A bit scattered but classes were easy and enjoyable
Very fun class. He likes it when you speak up and give your input. Easiest 4.0 I've ever gotten. Just do the busy work and make sure you show up for the quizzes each Friday. Real nice guy.

He's a **** and a crappy teacher. Likes to talk about how he was the "first" to realise the internet's potential... how come your teaching at a community college then? Oh yeah, because you're a loser

That class was super easy - a quiz once a week, and a letter to the author of the textbook at the very end of the class - it was a piece of cake!!!

This class is very easy and boring. Everyday about half the class was gone and only showed up on Friday for the quizzes. To be honest, I didn't even read a single chapter in the book and I got at a 3.7 in the class. You watch like 2 movies a week in this class. Definately take it to raise your GPA!
Very helpful, but not always clear on explaining what is wanted from an assignment.
Not real clear on what is expected on the papers. He grades on a curve which is good. I took this class online and there was 2-3 weeks where there was no response to e-mails. He wasn't very helpful.
Easy A except he never returns e-mails, doesn't respond on the discussion board and is kind of an ass
nice sir with a good sense of humor
It's just an OK class. Take it if you need the credit and grade. Nothing really much to do.
Mr. Knowlton's actually a really cool guy. You can learn a lot from his class if you actually listen to what he has to say. It's a very easy class, with the main grade based off of weekly tests. He's kind of odd sometimes, but in a funny endearing kinda way.

he is not helpful at all. when i have a problem with quizes, and i asked for his help through emails, it takes him a whole week to reply. and when he finally let you have a make-up test when you have technical problem, he does not give you any password to let you do the test. i will not take his class ever again.
he is a nice guy, he reply my email within a day. i didnt do much last quarter, but i ended up with a 4.0!
He is vey nice becasue i have never see him face to face. At this time, i just know that i have to hand in my final draft. The interesting thing is that he hasn't grade our frist draft yet. I am so glad i have such a funny professor makes this kind of freaking joke. Actually, it's not funny at all. And he is very helpful because he never help me.
Excellent understanding of the subject matter and very enthusiastic about the topic. One of the best instructor's I've ever had. But if you slack off or want a good grade just for showing up, he's not the professor for you.
He is so nice. But his class is not of my interest. I dunno why I took it. But I know many like him. well, if you like broadcast or anything relating to media/journalism, take him. Cuz it satisfies both ur interest and GPA. Once again, he is a really really nice and gentle. Dont use cellfone in class or you'll be embarrassed in front of the class.
what he teaches in class and what his tests are on have nothing to do with each other. plain and simple you could never show up for this class except on test days and if you read the book thuroughly you can end up with an A. not to mention the book critique was completly wack and seems to have nothing to do with his class. it his only assingment.
He is really nice if you take journalism, im sure youll have a good time. Everyone gets along and basically all we do is write articles for the paper. We write an article every 2 weeks, pretty simple. And the editors are awesome. You can only miss 3 classes if you want an A.
If you write 1 story a week and don't miss too much class, you'll prob get an A. It's easy, and you get an activity credit too!
Good teacher. Hard to contact sometimes, but overall I really enjoyed the class. Grades on a great curve. Just keep up with the assignments and you'll do fine.
He doesn't run this class, students editors do, so its really up to them how it goes. Theres no book, but a bit of heavy writing. Lots of international students have problems getting their articles in right for some reason. there's a PS to play on and free pizza, its worth it.
I took his class online. Lack of communication for an online class. Content isn't difficult and he grades on a curve which resulted in a 3.8 for me.
Took this class Online and did not like it all both-- both the subject matter (Mass Media) and the teacher. Mr. K isn't very efficient with communicating to his students and was constantly messing up the tests he set up. SO glad to be done with this class. Beware if you do take him online.
This guy does not communicate...his classes are useless and disorganized.
This class was boring and completly useless. It was a straight lecture class right out of the textbook everyday.
I skipped class half the time, and when I did go, it felt like a complete waste of time. Read the chapter before Fridays, and do the little posting assignments and it is easy. That being said.. the professor is boring, and makes what could be an ok subject, intolerable.
DO NOT take this class online. He constantly screws up the due dates, never gets assignements graded on time and rarely responds to emails or posts on Angel. The weekly tests are fairly easy but he does a terrible job at explaining the writing assignments. NO BUENO.
If you like an easy grade without learning anything or without any contribution from the teacher this class is for you. Be prepared to basically read an book and teach yourself. Teacher DOES NOT COMMUNICATE! Seems lazy and not very knowledgeable about the subject matter. What a waste of time. (This was an online class)
Lazy teacher never emails back. Waste of time class. Harsh grader. Even if you answer the question and it answers everything if its not long enough for him he will mark you down a lot. He is more about fluffing than content. Waste of time.
I took his journ101 class online and got a 3.9. Learning how to write in different style's was very interesting. His class has definitely improved my writing skills today. SIGN UP!
I took his online class; what a nightmare! We rarely got feedback from him and in the few days before our final he would not email anyone back and didn't post our final on the correct day. I do not recommend this online class.
Not very interesting class but very good teacher. He knows the stuff and is passionate about it. Looking forward to learning more from him
This is a very easy class if your not dumb. It is very straightforward. It is hard to get a response from him but if you do the work, which is EASY, you will get an A for sure. I didn't buy a textbook, he provides one online, and I didn't read the chapters.
He is an alright teacher, but thats it just ALRIGHT. The clarity of the class is terrible for as simple as it is. In this class, it is a lot of online stuff. The most recent video response hw was so bad it wouldnt even load, it was very laggy and i couldnt get the assignment done correctly. The tests are online and not even made by him
Great teacher, grades well and accordingly. He gives great feedback. As long as you pass the tests and turn in essays on time your grade in this class will be above average. I took the online class.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class. You learn little, if anything. He doesn't really "teach", he puts up a power point slide, doesn't explain it then moves on very quickly and rushes through material.Your grade is based almost entirely on quizzes with questions from other chapters or material not covered and a final.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! He is the worst teacher I have had at GRCC so far. His quizzes are extremely difficult and time consuming. He doesn't teach you anything that is on the quizzes. He grades on a scale so the few people who have taken the class before ruin everybody's grade. This class killed my perfect GPA!
I wasn't going to make a post on here, however this was the worst teacher I have ever had. I consistently emailed him with questions regarding assignments and he rarely got back to me. Several times he would post a quiz on the wrong day then give 24 hours to finish it two days later. DON'T take either of his online classes!
Worst instructor ever. He reads everything from the text book. Quizzes are super tricky and useless for application.
super easy, didn't have to attend class at all even though i still did, he reads directly off the slides and relates everything back to his own newspaper he made.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. He kept saying that I was not doing the quizzes when I was and he claimed that I never turned in my final exam when I did. When he tried to fail me for my class, I had to go to his boss and complain. He found my final finally and gave me a passing grade. He is also really bad at responding to emails.
Easiest 4.0 ever!
Everyone who says he is hard just doesn't want to spend any amount of time on the class. This class is super easy he teaches it online and in person he provides the online students with access to the lectures he gives. The test aren't difficult if you spend any amount of time studying. Such a joke. He was quick to resolve any problems I had.
This teacher is not helpful and one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He does not respond to my emails and is not helpful with students who need small accommodation. He expects you to answer 20 questions in 10 min. and makes mistakes when writing the tests. Do not take this class. EVER
Unless you are sincerely interested in working in the mass media industry DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I took this hoping it might be interesting but it is all about the business of mass media. I am not a business person. It is nearly impossible to stay interested. He isn't a bad teacher necessarily you just really need to care. I don't care.
I planned not to rate any professors here but I just can't stand this one. I really don't like this class. The quizzes are so hard. Even I take notes and listen to him in class I still find it hard to do the quizzes! Do not take his class!
Before taking his class I was interested in a career in journalism. He killed what interest I had. A very dry class, dry and weak teaching. Also, he kind of creeped me out.
Mr. Knowlton is a cool guy but a bad teacher. The tests and quizzes are all from the publishers website which makes a ton of mistakes. Although the tests and quizzes seem impossible with the time limits, it's not. I got a 4.0 because I took the tests as if it were an open book quiz. Lectures don't relate to the quizzestests at all. Good luck.
This class at first seemed really interesting but, that all changed when we started taking 2 chapters of quizzes a weekend. Just a warning you will probably have no social life when taking this class because 17 quizzes in 12 weeks seems more like a chore when you have other classes to deal with as well. The teacher gives lectures but, it won't help
He invites some experts to his class. So I was glad to get those oppoturnities. But, actually those made tests harder. They were taken from what they have said in the class, and such question worthed more than one question taken from the textbook. He never helped students who had gotten into trouble. Tests are so tough. Spare a lot of time.
HE QUIZZES ON SUCH SPECIFIC THINGS FROM THE TEXT BOOK. I WOULD READ THE CHAPTER AND BE ABLE TO TELL YOU ABOUT WHAT I LEARNED PRETTY WELL BUT HE GOES DEEP INTO SUCH AS DATES AND NAMES. MAKES YOU MAKE ASSUMPTIONS BASED ON THE TEXT.
This class is ridiculous. Even though it's online, it's really difficult. He expects you to read 50 pages in a week, and if you take notes and have other classes, it's almost impossible to read. I hated his class and had no interest. He also gives 10 min to answer 22 questions. Don't take this class. John is the worst teacher I've ever had.
Best teacher ever! Tests are specific, but easy if you really read the book and understand concepts. Getting 4.0 for sure!
Pointless class. He never covers anything that is on the quizzes and assigns 4 quizzes a weekend. Do not take his class.
Terrible teacher. Only gives 30 seconds per question on test and makes you read two chapters and take two tests a week. Emailed him about a problem with my test and he was rude and didn't help at all. Didn't learn a thing in this class ! I was interested in communications before this class but he made it a terrible experience.
Worst teacher I ever had. Not helpful, very rude, his way or no way, ignorant. Tough grader, hard tests, trick questions. 4 tests EVERY WEEK. He doesn't lecture on the information needed for the tests. only 2 assignments other than tests; very easy to fail. I am a straight A honors student and I failed this class. NO LATE WORK TONS OF HOMEWORK
quizzes are easy but his instructions for essays are confusing, asks for too much when revising your essays. really creepy and rude. if you have a choice, dont take him. he killed my grade when revising my essay, gave me an F for little mistakes
I am currently taking the online course and while he doesn't explain what he expects regarding projects, he is there for help if requested. The course if pretty easy, tests are formatted directly towards the textbook, and he seems pretty outgoing.
This is by far the worst teacher I have had since I have been at Green River, let alone any scholastic institution. He puts questions on the test that are minute details, does not work with students to help them succeed, and for the first half of my quarter he gave a resource for the tests that was non existent. On the student forum 1/2 are failing
Worst teacher I've had, online class is horrible, most of the students on the site do not understand the quizzes. 10 min for 22 problems and the questions are "finely combed" questions. Will not let you make up work if you signed up late (even if you were dropped), rude in person & email, refused to give me references to study for his tests/quizzes
I signed up for mass media to learn more, this class ruined my interest. It's all in book, some podcasts. tests are 10% major points in the 50 page chapter and 90% minor details that are not in bold or italicized. Did not help students when they asked for help on online forum. Refuses to give out a study guide/materials other than the book.
Online class, asked for help multiple times in person and through e-mail, he does not work with students. Tests are ridiculous 10 min for 23 questions that are not major points covered in the book. Waste of $150
His tests are at odd times of the week (the weekends). He is interested in teaching his class and gives the students useful knowledge, especially in today's world. I recommend everyone who take his CMST102 class to share when he asks for students to share a media story cause extra credit is given to those that do. I had 3.6 GPA at end but got 4.0.
John gives off the kind of attitude that he does not want to help his students nor care about how well they do in his class. He gives long lectures and his timed quizzes every weekend contains questions about topics that weren't even covered in class. He likes to trick us & also expects people to get an average of 70% in his class.
This class is the only class I have ever had a low grade in. It consists of quizzes every weekend and an essay every few weeks. I have never seen such useless quizzes. They are based on the book and ask very very very specific questions. I read the whole chapter, watched all podcasts/videos, made 4 pages of notes (small writing), but still failed
Very tough class and here is why: assignments are scattered over many different websites, not the most organized, poor notes.
Unfair grader and clarity of instructions is muddy at best. Questions on quizzes and essay prompts do not explain his expectations well, and are often focused on obscure material barely covered in text or lecture. Expects you to be fully media-literate at the beginning of the course and able to read between the lines. Would not recommend.
He is a great teacher! He does lecture a while but all of your tests are online so you can always look at notes or look things up that you don't understand. He is open to suggestions on homework and gives great feedback when you have questions. He has a sense of humor and has a bubbly personality. You will enjoy this class but its not exactly easy.
If you signed up for this class, just go and drop it now. On the recorded lectures you hear him struggle with the equipment and fool with his dog more than you actually learn, tests are so specific, 30 seconds per question, only open for 3 days, and the guy is just hopelessly scattered. Teachers like this cause people to quit school in my opinion
Immensely difficult class due to his ill organization and unclear grading. He rarely replies to emails that are asking for help, and when responding he is wrote in such a pretentious manner it made me uncomfortable to seek the help I wanted from him. This by far was the worst class I have ever taken and will never take a online class because of it.
His online Journalism class was great. I loved it, it was easy, and clear but on the writing assignments he would grade very harshly. I had an English prof. proof read my assignments and got on average, a C. His communications class was awful. I've never had a worse class. Four 50+ question quizzes WEEKLY on two 30+ page chapters.
Very rude, i felt very scared to talk in the class because he is the type to belittle you if you aren't correct. You might as well drop the class because it is not a good learning environment at all. His quizzes were given even though you learned absolutely nothing in the class
He never responded to my emails that his answer key was wrong on at least 10 occasions (I found the exact wording in the book). He never compensated me for his mistakes. He also takes points off if you don't write what he seems to want you to write about. I failed a quiz on my favorite form of social mediait's an opinion, how could I get it wrong?
The class topics were very interesting. Your grade comes from quizzes every week based on textbook chapters, as well as 3 or 4 assignments that he comes up with. Sometimes his grading didn't makes sense to me, as I would get a huge chunk of points off of an assignment for just making one mistake. It's definitely important to read the textbook too.
This class by far is the worst class taught at Green River Community College. Please never ever take this class.
This guy is off the walls. Like the other reviews say he responds to emails very rarely and when he does, he talks down to you. There were way to many quizzes in this class, and the book was little help. Google on the other hand was very helpful. Don't take this class, I seriously considered withdrawing without a refund to get out of this mess.
He would take forever to grade a paper, then expected to re turn in the paper after we preformed his suggestions but would ask for a lot including multiple interviews over the weekend
This was such an unorganized class. The syllabus did not correctly match up with actual assignments and due dates and the workload was insane. If you try to contact him about an issue with a test score or assignment, he just ignores you. There isn't really any guidance in this class, you're basically left to fend for yourself. I wouldn't recommend
Hes a nice guy and he brings his dog in to class every Friday (he asked about allergy's beforehand). He mostly talks all class or shows videos. Majority of the work is taking quizzes on canvas and on pearson revel, they are all open notes and pretty straight forward so its not hard to do well. The only issue is you have to take 3 quizzes per week.
4 quizzes per week, 2 of which are 35-40 questions, on top of other assignments and tests on the book, its ridiculously overkill
worst class i have ever taken in my entire life
John was a horrible prof. He was a very tough grader. For one assignment I had the exact same answer he wanted but with one extra word and he only gave me half the credit. I wouldn't suggest this class to anyone. Take interpersonal communications instead!
Terrible. Doesn't thoroughly explain the assignment requirements and punishes you for his lack of clarity.
Despite having a discussion for qs students have for him, John only replied 1 day out of the quarter, answering qs around 2 weeks late, not replying to new ones. The syllabus was inaccurate, appearing to be for a different course & a big final assignment was added a week b4 the due date w/ no prior warning. I got a good grade but 10/10 wld not rec
Does not thoroughly explain what is necessary for his 3-5 WEEKLY quizzes.
I will never take another course directed by him again. His online Mass Media course consist of reading the book and, well that is really it. He is not great at explaining anything and if you ask for guidance or help he just becomes frustrated with you, which is really discouraging.
Mr. Knowlton is a cool guy who really cares about his students. His enthusiasm for his subject -- mass media -- is infectious. But if you're a slacker and don't take the material seriously or want to do the work, this isn't the class for you. But if you wanna learn about the mass media and are willing to do the work, sign up.
Took his online class. Basically just read the book the whole time. Terrible choice to make. He is a very very tough grader.
I took Intro to Mass Media from John this quarter and barely passed. However, I did learn a lot! even though he is a tough grader, he obviously cares about journalism and this class. the only thing i didnt like was that i missed 2 quizzes and my grade dropped drastically because of how heavy he grades things.
He gives good feed back but is barely a teacher. You read a book and have weekly quizzes. There were also two papers due the entire quarter. Aside from the brief feedback he gives on the two papers, he is seemingly absent the entire quarter.
Please avoid him
3-5 quizzes/tests a week, sometimes giving you two chapters of the textbook to read in only a few days. The test questions on canvas were ridiculous, and timed to give you only a minute to thirty seconds for each question. Sometimes multiple extra articles/videos to read every week. Hes a good lecturer, but his class has an outrageous workload.
Very tough grader. The quizzes are weekly through Pearson, likely to be 2-6 a week. Despite all of this, he graded this class on a curve, got around a C with full effort, and I got a 4.0 since I was top of the class. While his lectures aren't necessarily great, you can tell that he really enjoys the class. Good person, questionable teacher.
Can't decide when assignments are actually due (kind of inportant.) Tests include question on content that was never assigned. Vague test questions, with multiple answers that could work, so you basically have to guess which o e he went with. Not consistent.
Heavy workload. Didn't respond to emails. If you had a question, he'll talk you down and it's discouraging
He takes time with grading and it is hard to get in touch with him. He told students to email him questions, but he never responds. Then he tells students to ask questions on Canvas, which he responds pretty late. His love for journalism is admirable, but I would not take his classes again.
He is very particular about what he likes in terms of writing; follow his feedback word-for-word and you'll get the credit. Don't buy the textbook-quizzes are on the website which are the same as on Canvas. There is a short time limit, with 3 a week. VERY BAD AT REPLYING ON TIME. He will take at least 3 days. Come up with backup topics for papers.
I was dropped out of the class and then registered again. I realized that I lost 2 assignments which was 95 points but he said to me no make up. If you study this class, you better get ready for reading 2 chapters for a few days. The quizzes are all about small stuffs that are not in capital or bold. PLEASE AVOID THIS PROFESSOR.
Awful. Avoid this class at all costs. I dropped out after my second test. He doesnt reply to you, he gives you absolutely no instruction and doesnt teach you whatsoever. Expects you to sit and analyze the textbook for hours which when you do it never even matches the test you take.
Don't ever expect a response from him. His comments back to you on assignments are rude and pointless. It was evident to me that he is truly incompetent at his job due to the course not even being set up correctly at the start of the quarter. I had many issues with his class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Knowltons class is easy simply because all of his quizzes are taken from quizlet. I had an emergency and it caused me to miss a deadline. Even though I had completed it and gave him a reason as to why it was late, he refused to accept it. He looks at you as a name on a paper, not a human. Avoid him and all of his classes.
I try to be a really positive person but Knowlton is a terrible teacher. Im taking his class during the quarantine, you d think hed respond to my emails or questions but Ive gotten no response all quarter. Were graded on few things. 2 papers (rough& final) each and textbook hw. The txt book hw is a joke. Avoid this professor!
I really tried to like this class. I didn't learn a thing about journalism. The only thing I learned was to be on my toes when it came to his erratic schedule. Save yourself the hard work and don't take this class! Even if you have the desire to write for The Current, don't. It'll save you time, frustration, and heartbreak. Do NOT take this prof!
Knowlton is a nice guy that shows enthusiasm for what he teaches. A few things to be aware of is that he is difficult to reach outside of class and often changes the due dates for assignments after they have already been assigned. Friendly guy, average teacher.
I really liked his class. His zooms were helpful since he always added a few questions in the quiz based off of something that we talked about in the zoom. Make sure you read the textbook since its all based off of that. There are quite a few quizzes, but thats really all there is. He says hes a hard grader, but it didnt seem like he was.
He expects you to work your hardest, do so and you will be fine. This is my second class with Professor Knowlton, and I must say that he makes a real effort to help you succeed. He is honest and caring. There have been some technical issues but he made a clear effort to resolve them. Make sure your work is in on time, he is not lenient.
I am taking his JOURN 101 class quarantine style. A Journalism story every 2 weeks. And three quizzes a week. The quizzes are very difficult and you have little to no time to do them. 8 min to answer 16 questions. He doesn't know what he is doing. And he feels very strongly on his political opinions, and is not open to different opinions.
Not the teacher to go to if you WANT to like journalism. Way too many tests (3 a week, little time to do so on each one) which are all from Quizlet, yet very nitpicky when it comes to your writings. Quite harsh and blunt. YALL, SAVE. YOURSELF. TIME.
