attendance is part of your grade; grade determined by a midterm and final, and two papers
Would never take him again, does not explain what will be on the tests or the papers. He does not offer any extra credit, and his lectures make the class extremely hard to pay attention to. If you want to have activities everyday and lectures given in the most monotone voice ever, hes your guy.
I normally get an A in all of my history classes. I must not have checked RMP before I registered for this class. He is very tough, you read a long chapter every week and are graded on exercises for them each class for attendance. He is a tough grader and you only have the midterm, final and 2 papers all heavily weighted. You have to work VERY hard
Never in my life have I gotten lower than an A in a history class, and always thought I was a history person- until I took this class. You only have a midterm and final, and two papers, and everything is graded extremely hard. Attendance also counts as a portion of your grade, and he calculates this by daily "exercises". Would not recommend taking.
Boring lectures, powerpoints are posted online but no help just a few pictures and little words. Tough tests ad tough grader when it comes to papers no extra credit and exercises per class count as a grade.
He's not as bad as people say on here. Granted I took US history to 1877.. He doesn't make you memorize any dates and his tests are fairly easy. He takes a different approach History which focuses more on thinking critically through the past, how and why events took place etc...
I am close to the end of the semester. His syllabus alone tells how ridiculously difficult the class is. There's only two tests and two papers for the whole semester. The 2nd paper is 25% of your final grade and same percentage for 2nd test. Both of the first ones were mostly subjective and he gave me a 68 and 73.
Pretty cool guy. Every class is a lecture with at least one exercise (which is pass/fail, but easy and just for attendance, really). Quizzes every other week based on a chapter of the book which isn't too hard to read for. 2 tests and 2 papers.
worst professor ive ever had. his lectures are boring, daily class work which is easy and weekly quizzes on the irrelevant parts of the chapter which are hard to pass cuz its pass/fail. he posts his lectures but the powerpoint are terrible because they consist of 3 words and a picture, his tests are online at home with lockdown and hard
Professor Laaman is an awesome professor. He is lecture heavy, but poses questions to the class to keep people engaged. He is clear on what he requires in his class, and gives plenty of opportunities to earn credit and fully learn the material. He doesnt assign hw other than primary source textbook readings and 2 essays.
I loved this class! Professor Laaman gives great feedback on papers, and you'll know what's expected for every assignment. His lectures can get a bit boring, but just get some caffeine in you and you should be fine! He does his best to make jokes through the lecture to keep you interested. It's important to pay attention and read what's assigned.
Professor Laaman seems to get a really bad wrap but I took him for online and it wasn't that bad. Idk about in class. But, if you are looking for an extremely easy online history class this isn't it, you have to put in the work. Also tests/quizzes are on lockdown browser. Tests are usually comprised of quiz questions, though.
I don't recommend taking him at all... lectures are super boring with the most monotone voice ever. There's only a final and a midterm which heavily impact your grade. There's discussion posts every week over a SUPER long textbook chapter and the responses have to be minimum 400+ words. If you're looking for something easy, don't take this class.
Dr. Laaman has probably been one of my favorite professors so far, I frequented his office hours and he was eager to discuss the subjects in further detail as well as help explain what I did not understand. He truly cares about the material his is covering as well as his students, go to his office hours and you will understand.
A nice guy and a decent prof, but be prepared for TONS of work. Every week, there are no less than 10 lecture videos, each around 10 min; a 5 question quiz (on lockdown browser w/ monitor); a long chapter to read; and a 400-word minimum discussion post plus 2 mandatory 100-words apiece replies to other posts. Quizzes & tests are hard; TAKE NOTES!!!
My biggest issue with this professor is the ambiguousness of the quiz/test questions and answers. Often I found myself studying the videos and notes from the videos and get to the quiz and many questions seem to have more than 1 answer. He will ask a lot of questions to choose which is NOT true and those are tricky. The quizzes/tests are lockdown
This class is straightforward (asynchronous online) but can be a lot of work. There were 10-15 videos a week split into 3-7 min increments. I liked this format. The key to doing well is to take good notes and memorize them. Then write a weekly 350+ word discussion post based on textbook readings. Midterm+final are only tests and worth 50% of grade.
I hated this class. I enjoyed it at first until the reading kept getting heavier and heavier. There are weekly quizzes and it is an ass. Please do not take this class if you have 5 other classes and is stem heavy. He loves teaching this course and it shows. I wished I would've been more into as him but I am just trying to graduate.
Each week he assigned 10-15 videos(1-8min) that were clear and straight to the point, a 350+ word discussion(75 word response), a mini quiz (lockdown browser, multiple choice and no more then 6 questions.), and textbook reading. Two final tests. Teacher is a quick responder and willing to help. Just don't fall behind and TAKE NOTES.
Steer clear of this guy. You will have a quiz every week in lockdown/webcam browser over the long and boring lectures and reading. The questions are almost formed to be trick questions with multiple answers over random minor details. He gives no feedback on quizzes as to what you missed and no type of study guide for the test, and grades harshly.
I took Professor Laaman for HIST 2112 in the summer. It was so fast-paced. You'll have quizzes every week with Lockdown Browser. The quizzes are a few questions so if you miss two or more, you'll fail the quiz. Lectures are boring but luckily short but TAKE NOTES. For summer, there were only two tests and weighed heavy on your class grades.
I am taking this class online and am a dual enrollment student and Im loving it. He gives back good feedback and is always there to help if needed! The only issue is there are two test and no study guide provided but if you take good notes you will be fine.
I do not recommend taking his class. I emailed him multiple times with problems I was facing and all I got back was go look at the syllabus. He gave a 6 question quiz with little to no time to take it. He also gave a test with a 15 min time limit for a 25+ questions. Overall, he was a terrible professor. Good luck.
Will never take his class again. Gives 1-2 quizzes every week on 200 page chapters from book, gives a 15-minute limit on a 25 question quiz, then a 35-minute limit on 2 essays about the chapters, talks too fast like we already know the material, then assigns a monthly essay. Don't recommend his class if you don't have any determination to study.
Do not take this class this Professor will give you F's. There are barley resources for you to study for only ones is his lectures and you'll have to write down every word to get a decent grade. Grades hard for no reason when it's a history class. He talks to fast and has barley any words on the Powerpoint. Barley gives times on Test. Don't take it
The material is really easy as long as you show up to class, otherwise you won't know anything. His quizzes are super hard and if you miss it you can't make it up. The essays are hard, he has a rubric but doesn't follow it so you don't know what you'll get. Tests aren't bad but there is a 15 min time limit for 20 questions and 35 min for two essays
It is textbook heavy and the quizzes are hard but the professor is very understanding and you have the option of not taking the last few weeks which gave me the option to study towards the test.
He does a fantastic job of making history understandable. Work consisted of essentially an attendance assignment for each lecture, easy chapter quizzes (in person), 2 papers, and 4 tests. As long as you come to class and listen to the lectures, you will be fine. I didn't study outside of class, just came in and made an easy A.
he is terrible. he doesn't take the time to understand his students or help them out if they need it. he doesn't have a personality which makes it hard to listen to his 15 lecture videos every week. plus he uses a lockdown browser for everything. his quizzes make no sense. i would never recommend him to anyone.
Don't take this class, the quizzes and tests are unreasonably hard with very short time limits. His power points are pictures with little to no information, the class has practically no resources for studying. He grades unreasonably on all assignments, and uses lockdown browser for everything. His lectures and assignments aren't relevant to tests.
probably one of the worst professors as his own quizzes make no sense even if its just one question. On top of that he makes you use a lockdown browser for everything making it hard to find a place to take it. The way he lectures also have me bored out of my mind no one listens to the lectures and he keeps you in class to listen to them. 0/10 tbh
I love history but his class was awful, the content was easy but the way he chooses to give assignments and grade made it more difficult . This is the only class I've ever had to drop.
Overall not a good choice at all. Lectures consist of boring PowerPoints with a picture and occasionally a term or phrase and little exercise questions that aren't difficult but are excessive for them to just determine if you showed up or not. Tests and quizzes are just arbitrary questions that loosely relate to what you learned.
Do not take this professor. Lectures are horrible. Test questions make no sense and do not relate to anything you learn, plus you have a 15 minute time limit. Uses lockdown browsers. Quizzes are based on attendance so if you take the quiz and miss class it's a Zero. Requires two papers which are graded as if you were in an advanced english class.
DO NOT TAKE! heavy lectures, hard exams, no posted info to study, 1 question quizzes, mandatory attendance, uses a text book that barley even goes along with the class. I have never received lower than a B in a class and I'm nearly failing so take that how you want it.
If you're at KSU and are looking for a quick and easy history teacher you've looked at the wrong name. This professor is awful and takes the award from me as being the toughest and worst professor I have had at KSU. I would rather repeat organic chemistry to satisfy my history credit than take this guy. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
not great. If you dont go to class you will fail. Theres two paperes and he grades tough
Prof was fair and it was actually interestting for a history class. Our groupme was just people begging for notes because they skippe class or didnt bother writing their own, and then before tests they wouldnt study and hope fo the best. Of course they did terrible and blamed the prof and even tried to convince other people to review bomb rmp
He rambled a lot in his lectures and gives unnecessary information. Way too many quizzes and there is a lot of reading.
For someone who has been teaching for a while, at the beginning of semester we had to give him quite a few suggestions for how to run the class. Probably the most irritating thing about the professor would post power points, with no info, and was entirely lecture based. His instructions are confusing He has no common sense when it comes to teaching
I actually really enjoyed Dr. Laaman. His lectures were very interesting, and not too many assignments due other than chapter quizzes. Textbook is required and each chapter quiz is one question. There were 2 papers he graded pretty thoroughly. Attendance is mandatory and his slides don't have much info for good notes so you have to listen.
Not a great class for any gen ed students, not any information given on powerpoints and need to pay attention to lectures pretty tentatively to understand the material
He made a gen ed history class way more difficult than it should be.we read 20-30+ page chapters in textbook every week for lockdown/webcam quizzes, graded exercises in class & takes role and the powerpoints have no info on them just pictures & a few words.he just talks about the info so notes are a pain. never made a study guide for tests either.
I love Professor Laaman! His lectures are never boring and he does a great job encouraging discussion. No such thing as a stupid answer in this class. Pay attention, take good notes and this class will be a breeze. He just wants you to understand overall theme of chapter. Ignore bad reviews...people are shocked you have to pay attention in class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! I did the work and got A's and B's and that wasn't enough for at least a B average. This isn't a hard course, it is a professor with grading criteria that no one understands. Your average grade is shown a week before the final. This is a general uni requirement course it should NOT be so difficult to receive a passing grade.
This class is very lecture heavy. He does not post his lectures online, so make sure you come to every class possible. Attendance is mandatory, especially after a quiz. You will only receive a grade from the previous quiz if you attend the next lecture. Textbook is required. Chapter readings every week.
Attendance is mandatory, and he has about two chapter quizzes a week. You don't have to participate in class or anything. Weekly chapter readings. Overall, would not reccomend.
Quizzes on all the chapters, two papers, and a few tests. He is a great teacher in the sense that he knows his stuff. He can be funny, and his lectures are actually very interesting. His PowerPoints are minimal, so you have to write/type almost everything. All his tests and quizzes have lockdown browser and camera. Be prepared to read and study.
Dr. Laaman is definitely up there when it comes to history lecturers! He delves deeper into intriguing topics that a majority probably never learned about in previous history classes. I agree that his class can be a bit anxiety-inducing since there's really only few grades that represent your class grade, but it is surely manageable.
Dr. Laaman is a very hard professor. If you are looking for an easy history course I would not take this class. His lectures only have pictures and note taking can be very difficult. Tests are also very difficult as he does not give you much time on them at all. If you chose to take him be prepared to have to do lots of studying.
DO NOT TAKE. horrible professor. you get no grades test are impossible unless you can memorize his hour & half lectures word for word. does not tell you what grades you have just averages them out. save your self the worries and do not take him.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. All we do are weekly discussions and quizzes. That's not the hard the part. The hard part is that this teacher does not even have good lectures, they're just long and un-informational. His "lectures" are just videos of him talking about nothing. This course is not even hard, it's U.S. History for god's sake.
I started off not liking the class because he doesn't put many notes on the slides. But that made me realize that I wasnt very good at taking notes so needing to take my own made me a lot better at it. Every exam is straight from the lecture as well as a few easy questions about the textbook so if you take notes youll be good
Laaman taught a good class and was lowkey hilarious. 'Hey south, Lincoln here' lol. The average grade was a B and a lot of the class got A's. There is a textbook and he does use it but it was actually very interesting to read because it had historical documents like letters and political cartoons
As of 4/11/2023 3:01 p.m., I have a 67% in the class because of my own issue. He focuses on the who what and why of the lectures so you need to look at the PowerPoint to see what will be covered, not counting his quizzes that are hard to understand. save yourself the trouble and don't take him. He is not helpful when you ask for help either.
currently have a 58%. Laaman is by far one of the worst history professors. The subject itself isn't hard but his lecture videos are so unhelpful. His "notes" are a powerpoint with important events, names or dates.he directly quotes himself from his lecture videos on his quizzes.AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COST!!. It's not worth failing a HISTORY course.
Pretty standard history course. Each week has lectures that end in a quiz and readings that you write a short post about. You are allowed to skip a third of the quizzes and discussions so its actually a nice relaxed schedule. No surprises anywhere. Prof replies quickly to emails.
Nicest professor ive had so far. you can tell he really wants students to do well. I had a medical issue in the middle of the semester and he worked with me to make sure i still finished the class
I would suggest taking notes on the lecture videos. Quizzes are pretty easy but sometimes tricky; if you get one wrong, you get an 83, so just pay attention to the questions on the quiz and take notes when watching the lecture videos, or you won't pass this class. The quiz is like six questions, and the discussions are easy.Easy class.
Please do not take him! The way he grades things is horrible. His lectures are uninformative, and it seems as if he doesn't really know what he is talking about. He really made this class way more difficult than it should have been.
Clear instructions with no surprises. Everything on the exams comes straight from the lectures, and the discussions follow the guidelines he gives you. As long as you do the work, you can get a B easy.
Lectures cover the material in an organized way and he explains everything so that even a stem major like me could understand. Assignments are graded according to the instructions so you know exactly why you get the score you get. Responds quickly to emails an tries to help you. Definitely recommend taking him if you can
Great professor. Definitely recommend especially if you actually want to learn about history and not just do a bunch of busy work. The lectures and readings are very interesting and he knows most of us arent majors so he does a good job of explaining things
Took his summer class. Wouldnt call him easy but also not hard either. Laaman doesnt treat you like a child. You have to take notes and study but his expectations are clear and reasonable. If you like to blow off studying and reading and then blame the professor for your own mistakes then your not going to have a good time in the class.
If you do the work, his class is easy. I wouldn't say he's a tough grader but I do wish the quizzes were slightly longer. Missing 1 question would give you a low B because they're only 6 questions long. The discussion material is actually pretty interesting! Very lecture-heavy, but they can usually be completed while taking notes within 3 hrs.
Very organized. All assignments, readings and schedule are on d2l on the first day so you can see exactly what the class is about and plan out your semester in advance. He also lets students choose some parts like you get to choose between a few paper options with different deadlines and the test essays give you a couple questions to choose from
The class is simple if you watch the lectures. there were a few in the group chat who always complained about failing quizzes but also said they never watched the videos. So yeah obviously do the lectures if you want to know the answers to the questions. Come on people this isnt high school
Dr. Laaman is extremely clear about what he expects from the students. He gives good feedback and responds to emails quickly. You can tell he is very knowledgeable about history and knows what he's doing.
Dr. Laaman overall is an okay professor. If you can read a chapter and watch his lecture video while taking notes throughout the semester, you will do fine. This also includes a weekly discussion comment and response. Do not opt out of optional weeks, two exams include random questions on videos/lectures. I did not enjoy the test,a little difficult
His quizzes are absolutely insane to take since they're 6 questions each and you have 5 minutes to take them. I wouldn't take his class again RUN.
Great class! I wasn't interested in history until this class. His videos are informative and he's lowkey hilarious. You have to take notes and study but you don't need to know dates. He uses the textbook but its actually a very easy read because its like mostly letters and newspapers from history. Would take his class again.
I took the honors section. For the honors section of his class, he had an assignment where we had to write a speech about slavery, and we were assigned to either be pro or anti-slavery, and it was very awkward and uncomfortable. The lectures are mostly him talking with minimal PowerPoint information. Just write down the most important concepts.
I took this class in the summer & it was a living nightmare. He is a HEAVY grader, gave us less than 10 minutes to complete a quiz, & assigned so many assignments. This single class had more work than both my other summer classes combined. If you are planning on taking this class in the summer, it better be your ONLY class or your GPA will suffer.
I was okay with Dr. Laaman's History course; I was surprised by the Lockdown Browser quizzes and tests but once I got the hang of it, it was okay. Please do your work ahead of time because waiting too long can make it overwhelming. My biggest issue was the textbook as it constantly referred to African Americans as "blacks"; it was jarring to read.
To preface this rating, I was taking 5 classes so maybe I am a bit biased. To start, he has a weekly discussion and response that was unreasonably annoying, a quiz of 6 questions in 5 minutes. Weekly readings that were boring and in old english. Aside the discussion and quizzes, he has 2 exams for a combined 50% of the class grade, so dont mess up.
You should definitely take this professor for us history. He is dedicated and knows a lot about history. He gives these little written exercises that are very easy and make the material much more interesting. There are tests and papers but he explains what he is expecting with them so you dont have to guess what he wants to see
Easy class if you pay attention. He gives detailed feedback on written work so its easy to get good scores. Just dont fall behind with the lectures or it will be more difficult.
I took his online class and one of the best things about it was that each week had the same set up so it was easy to know what to do. There were videos, a reading, a quiz and a discussion. The information was interesting and grading was fair but if you like each week to be different than this is probably not the class for you.
Solid professor and fair grader. He gives great comments on assignments that help when your writing the next assignment so if you read the comments you should be able to get an A. Apparently a couple people in our section were caught using chatgpt and reported to the academic honesty board so be aware that he looks for that
Dr. Laaman's online class was not as bad as the ratings made it seem. He lets us skip up to 4 quizzes and discussions w/ no penalty. Quizzes are 5-6 questions, but you'll be fine as long as you review your notes before. If you're not good at note-taking or reading/writing, I don't recommend this class. His lectures made history easy to understand.
I don't know why Dr. John has bad ratings. He is a really nice professor. He lets you skip 4 Discussion/Quiz. The lecture doesn't last than 4 or 7 min each which is easy to go through. He has a 5 min quiz which was hard for me but from everything was a good class. He also gives you extra credit that will pull you grade up.
The instructor posted many videos for each lesson that covered a lot of information that I would recommend taking notes on for the tests. The tests were average in difficulty, as it depended on the attention you gave to the video lectures. He gives great feedback on assignments and answers all questions. The only tests were the midterm and final.
I didn't do great in this class because of some non school stuff i was dealing with but i really enjoyed the class and wish i couldve spent more time on it. professor was good and lectures were interesting. there is a quiz and discussion each week but you can skip four of each
Dr. Laaman is a caring professor who knows his material well. In my opinion, the content reflects his knowledge and his student expectations for material retention and knowledge matches that of his knowledge of history, not that of a 2000 level classes expectations. If you are willing to put 15+ hours per week into this online class, take him.
Professor Laaman was a fantastic teacher. His classes are challenging but very clear and well organized for you to comprehend everything and if not, he is always available to clarify questions during his office hours. I would definitely take this class again. I took US History, online course.
If you take his online course the only way to get information is from the boring and monotone lectures or textbook. If you want to review anything you better have extremely thorough notes or a free 2 hours to watch lectures again. The quizzes are only 6 questions and often include a question that was not gone over in the lecture or book.
There's a quiz every week and a discussion. His quizzes are easy but it is easy to fail if you don't study. Online class is a little time consuming, it'll contain 13-14 lectures that can be up to 8 minutes. You can opt out of 4 quizzes and discussions. Tests are easy as well and have the same questions as quiz and has a written answer part.
Do not take him if you want a peaceful life! This is the worst class/teacher I've ever experienced.
He's not a bad professor, but his class is my least favorite this semester. There are quizzes nearly every day that cover the textbook, not the content of the class. I would not have needed to touch the textbook at all if it weren't for the CONSTANT quizzes! Not a good 8am class to take since attendance is necessary to pass. Very lecture heavy.
Very passionate about teaching history. I do recommend showing up to lectures because he tells you what content is going to be on the tests. The lectures are interesting so you wont regret going to class.
This professor was great! He was organized and clear, and I found his lectures interesting. Textbook reading was a lot, but you get four skips on the weekly discussion posts and quizzes, which is very helpful. He gives good feedback and posts weekly announcements. There were only two tests, including the final. I definitely recommend his class!
I loved this professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but GO TO CLASS. His lectures cover everything on the tests, so if you go and take notes you're good. There are IN CLASS assignments for every lecture. They are very easy tho. There's two papers, but he gives you lot's of time to do them. No final technically, just the last unit test for the class
Discussion posts discussion posts discussion posts. Kind of a lot but its very manageable I just hate writing. He was really cool and has 4 free quiz and discussion drops which was life saving!! Just take notes on the lectures and study and it's a breeze.
Stay away from this teacher. He sets you up for failure. Worst online teacher i've ever had.
From what I've read in the other reviews his online class isn't that good. But I took him in person and it ended up being an easy A. Make sure to GO TO CLASS. Everything on the tests is in the lectures. Easy in class assignments, two paper options, short quizzes on textbook chapters, and three tests make up the class.
His class was fine but what I really enjoyed was the drama. So many people were using chatpgt in discussions and tbh it was annoying how they bragged about getting away with it in the groupme but i guess prof has some system for catching it and failed them all so yeah i do not recommend cheating. Bro really wakes up everyday and chooses violence
His in person class isn't that bad to be honest. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there's in class assignments and everything on the test is in the lectures. So you kinda gotta go either way. History can be boring, but he lectures good. The papers aren't too bad, and he gives you a lot of time for it. It was a pretty easy class for me.
Taking this class is not too bad. Definitely not good as a very early morning class. Attendance is kinda mandatory due to exercises and quizzes. I suggest attending class to maintain a good grade. His lectures don't have written sentences, but pictures. Chpt quizzes are based on 1 source out of multiple given, reading the whole chpt isn't needed.
I had him as an 8am Tuesday and Thursday class, and I thought he was great. He had personality. This is a lecture-heavy class. Just 3 tests, the final, two easy papers, and easy quizzes over the textbook. Extra credit for answering questions in class. READ THE TEXTBOOK! Talk to him if there is an attendance issue. Super easygoing!
I wish i could give this man a 0. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS for your own sanity. class was online but its not that easy. You have a reading and a quiz every week. The quiz is proctored and he gives 5 skips for each quiz and discussion post. the discussion is based off the extensive reading of the week. dont use those 5 skips if you want a good grade!
Professor Laaman mostly reads off slides and doesn't engage much during online class. His 5-question quizzes are very specific and easy to lose points on. You can opt out of weekly work, but it lowers your grade. Exams are multiple choice but do include 2-3 detailed mini essays. The class is tough and not well structured for most students.
This professor is well organized, respond quick to any questions or concerns you may have. I took him as an online class for the summer. It is based on lectures, discussions and webcam heavy. I wouldn't recommend cheating or using AI. If you want to actually use your brain take him !!!!
Terrible. Lectures for so long and then tests on the smallest most unimportant details, causing you to get bad grades.
Bro, professor reads the few words(2-8) on the powerpoint and then elaborates. So, he doesn't just read off the slides. Theres not much on the slides. Each unit have 8-15 videos but are from 3-7 minutes long, but I put his videos on 1.5x or 2.0x speed.
I took this as a summer class so i dont know if the fall or spring versions are similar but i found the work manageable. Weekly quizzes and discussions but you can skip five of each, and two tests that arent cumulative. He doesnt allow ai and does fail students for using it so maybe dont add if you plan to use ai
Dr. Laaman was great! Great class structure, easy to reach, compassionate but stern, long lectures but straightforward. Some of the test questions were specific, must be able to think critically in some aspects. Lots of reading and essay questions about the reading. Not the easiest, but great insight and enjoyable in my opinion.
Grades are only based off a lot quizzes, 1 paper, and 3 tests, which all require a good amount of reading. However, as long as you do your readings and pay attention in class with good note taking skills, you'll do great in his class. He is not a bad professor by any means, but rather challenges you to actually be a college student!!
