Funny, but efficent in teaching material
Possibly one of the best math teachers that I have ever had, if not the best.
Awesome teacher. Funny, friendly, and clear in his lectures. Get him if you can!
Great teacher.
Math King, though he'd never admit it.
Easy to understand, good teaching style. Does give quizzes often. Explains difficult homework problems well.
Lahoud is awesome. Extremely clear and helpful. He goes at a good pace and doesn't assign unneeded amounts of work nor does he skimp at all on the subject. An awesome professer. This is the way they're supposed to be at universities.
Lahoud is a great guy and explains things well but his grading is harsh and he tends to put you on the spot when you ask him honest questions. I've seen him laugh at kids for asking questions on material.
Good professor overall. Said he goes to bed around 6pm every night and only eats fruit. Still a good guy though.
One of the best, and most difficult teachers I've ever had. He really gets into the material and is very thorough, however he does ask a lot, for example he gives quizes every morning before you can ask questions. He has a strange obsession with juice.
Best math professor ive ever had, great clarity when he explains things, and assigns enough work so you really know the material, overall great guy.
Lahouds the man
he sucks, straight up
hates the calculator, ate a broccoli and a potato, stems and alls, but other than that good teacher
He's very good. I took Cal I before and I didn't like it. But then I have Prof. Lahoud as professor, I start to like Cal. I. I think he is cool, and easy to understand. It is true that he does give a lot of quizes. Too bad he doesn't teach Cal. II. Overall, he's AWESOME!! If anyone of you want to take Cal. I, pick LAHOUD!!!!

He totally made up for Brent's awful lectures. Funny and helpful.

Excellent instructor- explains concepts clearly and thoroughly. Class is challenging but he is fair. Highly recommended.
Lahound and Brent is an awesome combo. Lahound is very clear, incredibly helpful and an all around nice guy. His class is challenging, but it definately pays off on the calc tests. If you get the chance to take his class I highly recommend it.
Best teacher ever..take him along with brent and calc 1 will be easy...will do anything to help you...play racket ball with the guy just a good person in general, seriously reccomend him to anybody
He is a awsome teacher! He really makes everything clear after a lecture! On of the best Math teachers I have ever had.
go very fast in class. (only he would understand) he is not hard but he grade very hard. Only 4-5 problems in test if you screw up you will fail. nice person though
a bit eccentric, but very clear and knowledgeable. The class is taught towards the students who need the most help, so if you feel like you know it pretty well you'll be bored
Lahoud is awesome. His quizzes every class r usually pretty easy and only 10 points. He one of the recitation guys who DOES NOT collect homework which is fantastic but he does go over stuff if students have any questions. Sometimes he's funny and a very nice person. Take him!!! U will not regret it!
Lahoud is a very knowledgeable guy, but he went way too fast for me. Quiz just about every class right when you walk in, so study! 3 exams.. 5-6 questions and if you get a few wrong then you practically fail. Attendance is a must. Take him only if you feel really confident in your math skills otherwise take another route
Lahoud is the absolute man. 24 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 final. Homework is mandatory, but if you can do the homework, the quizzes will be cake. Very highly recommended.

Lahoud is a pretty goofy guy, but that's what keeps me interested. Attendance is only mandatory because he gives a quiz in every recitation class. He knows everything about Calculus: formulas, shortcuts, and how to do it all. He explains things very quickly, but he explains them very very well. He's a great help for students in Calculus 1.
he yells all the time. he goes very fast. he puts you down for not knowing how to do things he considers simple. if you find it funny to be yelled at and having extremely hard quizzes then yes he's awesome.
He gives you a quiz at the beginning of each recitation and he teaches you how to do calc problems in the shortest way possible. And he's the only recitation professor who gives you homework online.
the comment on 11/3/09 is SPOT ON. he's not that great. every day youre absent its -2 points off the final grade. way too enthusiastic for you to wanna be there
This guy knows his stuff dont get me wrong but he doesnt know how the students think. Hes very fast, quiz everyday and a hard grader. Hes old fashioned (no calculators allowed on tests/quizes) is what really hurts a lot fo students. If you want to pass in Calc take someone else. If not i wish the best of luck to all.

Business calc-worst ever--total frustration--many dropouts--stay away!!!
Easy to understand. quizes given before almost every class, but easy if you do the HW. do the HW for extra credit and go to class for an easy B.
best calculus professor ever seen.........he can turn a dumb student into a genius
He is by far the best professor I've had my entire college experience. Plus he's in the NRA and he is a good singer
Great professor, great teacher. He doesn't take attendance, but he gives out a mini-quiz almost every day to force you to not only show up, but stay on track with the material. What can I say? He's a NRA-member vegan who does pushups while you're quizzing. Doesn't get much better than that.
go to class and get an Easy A :)
I disagree with many of the comments that say he is awful. He is a great, fast paced teacher, but no matter where you stand, you can learn it. The daily quizzes are EASY. If you pay attention for even 15 minutes in that class, you'll have no problem with the quizzes. Just be ready: no calculators, a lot of material. Great professor.
Great professor. There is a quiz everyday so do the hw immediately so you are ready. I didn't buy the book, you only need access to the online hw account. I recommend taking him you have to stay sharp but that's a good thing.
I dropped his class half way through the semester. He is a great guy and a great teacher, but for someone who isn't as gifted in Calc as other students, his tough grading on exams and lack of acknowledgement for the easy homework doesn't helf your grade. He gives a quiz everyday, which makes it really stressful and hurts your grade.
Great at explaining anything in Calc 1. Is not an easy professor, but really does everything he can to teach you the material right and make sure you are on top of things. I got an A in his class and honestly the one-problem quizzes given every day were stressful, but did keep me sharp.
Easily one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He went a little fast at some points, but is willing to help any student that needs a little more understanding. He has a great sense of humor as well and makes a point of getting to know his students. I can not possibly recommend him enough.
I didnt have high expectations for his class, but thanks to him I was able to refresh my memory of Calculus I after taking it in senior year of high school. I really enjoyed using MyMathLab as it helped it out tremendously with homework. Go to classes, we dont use the book much so you wont learn anything if skip
Took Calculus One over the summer with Prof Lahoud. Honestly one of the best classes I have taken at UMass Lowell. There is a quiz every morning and the homework is non graded.
Couldn't be happier I had him. Starts out tough, but then you catch on to what he's looking for. He gives you a lot of opportunity to succeed; you just have to do the work. Learned a lot and ended up with an A- in a 4 credit course.
He was probably the worst teacher I've ever had. He teaches way too much material at once, and gets aggravated when you ask him to explain things. His tests always have six questions or less, so it is near impossible to get a good grade if you get one wrong. He makes you study 10 lessons of material, then the test asks you for 1/16 of that material
Okay teacher. I took him over the summer and there was no slides, he just made his way on a chalk board. No mastering calculus (which would have been helpfull). I went to every single class, yet, dont think i understood much. He takes off a letter grade if you miss 2-3 classes. To do well you need to seriosuly learn from book and come prepared.
He is consistent and clear, so there's a lot to be said for that. But he goes fast. You learn something in a Weds lecture, go home and do problems, and Thurs you take a quiz. There's no room for questions and he often looks indignant if you ask them. Don't rely on lectures to learn. Teach yourself beforehand and use the lectures for clarification
For this class you have to teach yourself ahead of time.Instead of teaching he basically reviews-he goes fast. He's pretty condescending when you ask questions so don't ask too many. There are about two or three quizzes a week so attendance is mandatory. Each quiz is like a question or two. His class is harder than the exams so you'll be prepared.
An absolute train wreck. Every question I asked was met with condescension, like I just asked him what 2+2 was. I spent 3-4 hours in the tutoring center every other night and felt like it didn't do any good. Almost everyone in my class was taking it for the second time, and now, it looks like I'll have to as well...
Great teacher, sometimes he goes fast. Do your homework and you'll easily get an A or B.
Great professor. Good to have taken at least some high school calculus course prior to his class though. He does move fast at times, but his explanations are clear. There is a quiz in his class almost every other day, partly for attendance. I enjoyed him as a professor and enjoyed his class. Easy A if you're good with calc
Calc 1. He 'teaches' very quickly, feels like review. Responds to questions with little explanation; if you don't understand the material before you come to class you'll be lost. Strong PreCalctrig background req. or you'll need tutors. Gives a little under 2 'pop' quizzesweek, all more difficult than the 3 tests (not written by Lahoud).
Highly recommend, a very helpful teacher
Awesome professor, I highly recommend taking him. He goes fast, and quizzes and class material are much harder than the exams, which makes the exams seem very easy. Show up to class, and do all your my math lab assignments, and you'll get a big boost in your grade at the end of the semester. Bonus, he has the neatest hand writing ever!
condenses and combines the every subject. does not follow the book. does not explain anything beyond whats obvious. what I learned in that class feels like a huge blob of mess in my brain and you will be beyond confused on quizzes (oh there are a WHOLE lot of quizzes) and tests. when a teacher asks you to buy the book they should follow it.
He teaches quickly but explains things well. He is happy to help you if you go see him during office hours. He gives a lot of quizzes that are easy as long as you have done both the online and book homework. I didn't most of the time and it hurt. Do the work in his class and you will be more than prepared for the exams. Highly recommend him.
Professor Lahoud teaches very quickly and can cover a lot of material in one class. He has a tendency to respond to questions with condescension but I don't think he means for it to come off that way. Can be confusing if you didn't know the material beforehand.
Goes through content very quickly. Be prepared for quizzes every class, because they can really help you for future tests. He is a hard professor, but definitely knows what he is talking about. Never hesitate to ask questions because he is always more than happy to help. He makes himself very available outside of class as well.
Professor Lahoud is a good professor, but at the same time he teaches the material way too fast and gives two pop quizzes a week. My advice is to keep up with the homework and notes after every class. Also, the tests are generally easier than the quizzes.
Great person and great professor. A bit intimidating if you aren't somewhat adept at mathematics though, he definitely expects a certain standard of academic aptitude (rightfully so). Talks a bit fast and expects you to know the simple stuff, but he is very good about emphasizing the important concepts to pay attention to. A very skilled professor.
Good guy all around but I flipped one exam when I came down with a nasty virus, Ended with a 69. Tried everything in the world to get that one point but there's a little bit of heart missing from this guy. Not bad, just try hard and don't need that extra point ;
He explains calculus as if it's a review. He means well but he goes to fast and before you can ask a question you're on to the next section. Also pop quizzes are usually only 1-3 questions once or twice a week. If that's you're learning style than take him. If not you will fail miserably. Great guy though. Just not my style.
Great guy. After taking this professor for calculus I, I found that he had prepared me very well for subsequent math courses. I would recommend. Just do a few practice problems before class and quizzes are a breeze. If you can handle quizzes then exams are cake. Overall, he keeps you on your toes, if his quizzes don't get you, his sharp wit will
I took his course in summer 2015 and he was honestly an amazing professor. He really explained everything well. If you do the homework and extra problems, the exam will be a piece of cake. I got a 60 on the first exam, but I kept practicing and eventually ended up with an A+. If you put the work in, you'll be fine.
Professor Lahoud treats every class like it is review. He will skip steps because "you should already know them." If you need to be taught Calculus or haven't been in math in a couple of years. Do not take Lahoud.
He goes kind of quick(one section a day)but he doesn't mind slowing down and going into detail about anything. He wants every student to do well and does his best to have everyone understand the material. He gives easy 2 question quizzes every other class and tries to get to know each student pretty well.I definitely would recommend him to anyone

I took his 8 AM Calc I class after being out of school for more than 10 years. It was incredibly challenging at first, but he was very helpful by providing me with personalized feedback to show me the areas where I needed to study, (trig functions and natural logs were my problem)
John Lahoud was one of the only good professors I had at Umass Lowell. He genuinely cared about every student grasping the material, and tried his best to explain things as complete and thoroughly as possible. He made Calc as enjoyable as he possibly could, incorporating his beautiful humor and vegetable leather woven shoes. What a guy,
Great professor. Knows his stuff thoroughly and makes the course interesting. Expects a certain level from his students. Does take around 16 quizzes in a semester but it helps you prepare for the exams well. Found the course pretty easy and his lectures made it more easier. He's extremely flexible with assignment due dates.
Professor Lahoud inspired me to change my major to something math related. Although he's a little rough around the edges, he really cares about teaching, always shows up to class on time, and really understands the material in and out. Just be warned though, if you don't try in his class, then he will not care about teaching you.
Professor Lahoud is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had and turned me from a guy who hates math into someone who now loves it. He explains the material perfectly, but he sets the bar extremely high for his students. Work hard, rise to his standards, and you'll walk out knowing that you KNOW Calculus and can differentiate anything.
Professor Lahoud was one of my favorite professors. He taught a bit fast but cared about everyone's understanding of the material and by the end of each class, He would ask if there were any questions and not a single hand would go up. Hes very caring and a great story teller on top of a great teacher.
Awesome professor. Lahoud is an awesome, caring guy who teaches very fast, but very thoroughly and understandable. He is very fair about grading, wants you to pass and is a very nice guy. Makes calc 1 both enjoyable and understandable.
Great teacher! From first impressions you might think of him as a little scary, but once you get settled in class, you realize he's a very nice guy. He teaches through examples so make sure to take notes on everything done on the board. 1 Question Pop quiz every other day if not everyday, usually on stuff taught the day before. Attend class.
The kind of Calc professor you want to have early on in college. HW due two classes later and gives you every chance to ask question. EXPECT a 2 q. quiz every class. His teaching style is very objective as well as descriptive of the underline fundamentals of Calculus. If you skip class he makes a point of saying your name louder in attendance.
Great professor and a great guy. He really cares about you doing well and learning the material. As long as you show up and pay attention, you will do well. Beware the daily quizzes he gives, and don't skip class too often because there is no making up a quiz. Quizzes do happen often, so if you fail one or two don't stress about it.
Great professor, as well as a great person. He really stresses the important topics, and why we use them rather than just feeding the students random Calculus. Make sure to attend class frequently as there are quizzes most mornings, however he only includes important topics he discussed in class. He really cares about actually teaching students.
He's an awesome professor, also a very interesting person. Attendance is 5% I think. Homework is a reasonable amount, never used the textbook but it can be very useful when it comes to practice problems. And his office hours can be very helpful when you struggles with a topic.
I really enjoyed Professor Lahoud's class. He emailed a syllabus before the semester started that tells you what will be covered each day in class, which was helpful. You are allowed to miss two classes before they affect your attendance grade. Since there are quizzes very often in class, you definitely want to show up.
4 exams throughout the semester that makeup 40% of your final grade and a final exam worth 30%. The other part of your grade is made of quizzes (15%), homework (10%), and attendance (5%). Quizzes roughly every class or every other class on material that was learned in previous classes. Don't worry if you fail some, there are a lot and 2 are dropped
Professor Lahoud is one of the best, if not the best, Calculus professors. There is a timed quiz at the beginning of almost every class on what was taught in the previous lecture. These are pretty hard so prepare well for them. The exams are also timed but are fair. His expectations are very clear but be prepared to be challenged.
I really liked professor Lahoud for calculus 1. He is a really good teacher and has a friendly nature with students. The only major problem is he doesn't tell you when your quizzes will be. Also, he can't teach properly online since he seems to be having problems especially with his video quality and no one can't read what he writes on his board.
Professor is very organized and well prepared for class. Attendance is important to him and his lectures are straightfoward. Does examples problems out in class, very similar to hw on MML. A quiz almost every class, but exams/quizzes are very fair. Cares about his students.
Great professor. His homework are on mylab math and it's due the next class. Problems are usually 5-20 problems and they're usually easy.
Really nice guy who cares about his students. He's willing to meet you outside of class to go over any issues you are having, even when he isn't obligated to. I remember that I was having anxiety issues because of the noise coming from others, so he gave me permission to mute my mic. Also helped me turn my D into an A. Didn't even need extra cred.
His quizzes are sudden and unforgiving. Don't think I passed more than 3 out of 20 or so throughout the semester. Typically 1-2 questions, and he does not give enough time to check your work for mistakes. So you either get the problem(s) right or fail. However, the HW and tests saved me. Got a 97 on the final test. Wouldn't take if you have anxiety
He gives an absurd amount of pop quizzes, and exams are worth 70% of the grade. The quizzes are only one question so if you do not know how to answer it you'll receive a terrible grade. Exams are graded incredibly harshly and after failing one it is incredibly hard to recover
I really liked his class. He made the material extremely easy to understand via his lectures. He's very passionate about the material and tries his best to explain it. He even had videos of his lectures online if need be. His work is always precise and to the point, his class doesn't hold any punches.
There are lots of pop quizzes, at least 2-3 per week. Tests are worth 45% so failing 1 or 2 will severely impact your grade. He can be nice but is also pretty condescending when you have questions during class or office hours. He also doesn't give full class time for exams like other profs do and typically cuts about 20 minutes.
1. Quiz 20% (Unannounced) 2. Midterm 45% (3 x 15%) 3. Final 25% Total 90% Unforgiving pop quizzes. He will skip steps because "you should already know them." He has at least 15 quizzes in total, which have 1-2 questions. You only get 6 minutes for each. Exams are about 9 questions each weighs a lot. Harsh grader.
Great professor, he cares a lot about his students. He has a unique personality which sets him apart from a lot of other people. He is willing to dedicate his time to students when they need assistance. His quizzes are pretty unforgiving, they are frequent and unannounced, they usually consist of a single question from the previous topic.
Great, true college professor; tough but cares about the material. I'm taking him for the summer course and I have to say that yes, his quizzes are technically "unannounced," but he tells you explicitly in the beginning of the semester that you'll have one every day. This may be different than normal a semester, but his syllabus is very clear.
This professor treats every class as more of a review than a lesson. Can be condescending when someone asks for clarification. Minor mistakes will tank your grade on the few assignments that are given. Overall very knowledgeable but not recommended unless you already know calculus.
Great math professor; clear and understandable lectures that don't drone on and on about random, useless things. However, he's a super tough grader with no options for extra credit. My test avg was about a 94, but commuting from 1hr away to his on-the-dot 8am quizzes caused me to miss a bunch, tanking my grade. No make-ups, he simply doesn't care.
Good professor but often skips steps. Exams are worth a LOT of points. No extra credit at all because he sees homework as that.
Took him over Summer 2024 for my first college class. He drops 3 quizzes and if you do better on your final than any of the 3 exams he will take the lowest score of one of the exams and match it with the score of your final. Overall a great professor. He is willing to meet with you pretty much anytime outside of class, as long as he is assessable.
