Absolutely legendary, it amazes me how someone can narrow down a 100-page legal case to just a couple of pages, lecture on it, and not have one student walk out. His tests are so fair, usually one 25% test, 15% reading quizzes, and 10% participation, a 30% case brief which he provides so much guidance on, and a 30% final exam. I loved him 10/10.
Amazing, he always posted D2L announcements and sent us emails to keep going and if we needed help to always ask him. Don't think I have ever had someone so supportive, passionate, and knowledgeable about course material. He did mark a bit tough on the case brief but it was worth the most so I understand why, still a 5/5
Showed us Jeffery Epstein videos absolute legend, made acronyms to help us remember such as PIDO [haha if you get it] it stands for Presumption of Innocence, Impartial Jury, Due Process, Openness and Accountabiliy. He is hilarious too, loves helping you out, and gave us fist bumps as we handed in our final, we need to make this man immortal
I signed up for one of his classes in Winter 2025 in the middle of his lecture because he is the GOAT. The tests are content heavy but he provides study guides and helps narrow them down, so it's not really a problem. He is so funny and extended the due date of one of the reading quizzes because he thought we looked tired in class, liked him alot
I don't think I have heard a louder round of applause then I did on the last day of class, such a great instructor. He has such clear expectations with assignments that if you do bad it might be a you problem. His tests focus on legal principles, explaining the cases, and not memorizing useless garbage like names and dates, seriously amazing.
Has really interesting stories of his own experiences going through the criminal justice system, such a nice guy and so knowledgeable he is wicked with questions in class he answers them like rapid fire. His lectures are so interesting to listen to, love the guy 1 billion out of 10.
Crazy how he is better than profs who have been teaching the same courses for years. Have two courses with him next sem and can't wait, lectures are out of this world, and I have never been able to retain information better, he offers study guides, bonus credit, help in office hours, post slides on D2L, and feedback before handing in assignments.
He is the light that this cruel cruel world needed. Such a down to earth and amazing human being, always ends him emails with "Does that help?" and always includes a smiley face. You can NEVER hate this man, and I love him with my whole heart, he does mark a bit tough but his feedback usually reflects why, still found it fair. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!
Material is conveyed crystal clear, so are his instructions for assignments, his lectures are so well done and keep you engaged through the whole hour. He truly cares about his students, my friends and I all got fist bumps as we handed in our final and it was so cute. If you have the chance to take him absolutely do, tests & assignments are fair.
Marked the case brief a bit harsh, but he gave us resources to help, instructions were clear, email was helpful, and posted a sample case brief. Would definitely take him again, builds connections with all students especially those who raise their hands in class. Shows us crime documentaries and high speed police chases in class lmao such a legend.
Legend. Legend. Legend. Legend. Legend. Legend.
Wish he didn't narrow the course down so much, while the study guides and extra resources are nice it makes the course too easy and I don't put in much effort and therefore don't learn much. Still a very nice guy, an infectious laugh and smile, good sense of humour always down to help you out.
Textbook is optional, not sure why people are putting it as mandatory, the legal cases that are posted as PDFs are mandatory to read, they are tested on. Landry sums them up extremely clearly, his expectations on grading were clear and feedback was helpful. Lectures are amazing and he is very approachable, thank you.
Absolute legend helps and cares about you and tries his best to get to know every single one of you by name despite the relatively large class size. It should be a requirement for all Ucalgary students to take a class from him to graduate, shows videos of police pursuits, you are not the father Maury videos, and teaches law like an expert, GOAT
Amazing person and even better instructor. Clearly cares about his students, moved the due date for one of our reading quizzes because he thought we looked tired in class, extended our case brief to be due after reading week so we can have time to work on it. Extremely knowledgeable about course material and passionate about it too, which is rare.
The best class I took this semester by far, a smart individual who clearly knows what he is talking about. His grading is extremely fair, he posts endless resources to help you, and has said countless times in both classes I took with him that if we are overwhelmed by the class, to let him know and he will adjust, lectures are also astounding.
Zero bad things about this man, we are taught through very well-done informative lectures, various documentaries, legal case studies, extremely comedic and funny individual, waves at you as you walk in the class, gets to know your name, posts study guides, and practice questions, lets you make up material you missed. Second coming of Jesus.
Greatest in the biz, enjoyed the class a lot, structured well, enjoyed the cases, interesting to read. Tests I found fair, focuses on key concepts in the slides so focus on those. He doesn't care about remembering every single section in the Criminal Code which is nice, or even names of historical figures or dates which is also nice. 10/10
He told us on the last day of classes that as we continue our studies, life is not so much about making others proud, but making yourself proud. Not only does he drop hard quotes like prime Edgar Allan Poe but he teaches the law like a real g, made the class real clear and concise, never threw tricks at us and wanted to see us pass and do well.
Amazing. By far one of the best lecturers, he is shockingly smart when it comes to certain areas of criminal law, one question about something so minuscule will come with a short concise answer but also such a detailed thorough explanation i loved it. So so knowledgeable and I'm grateful to take his class, take it if you can.
So talented at lecturing, marks so fair, tests are fair, posts study guides, study resources, practice test questions, loves helping you out whether in office hours or after or before class. Personally loved him because despite experiencing some mental health issues, he never failed to make me feel better and less stressed about his class.
I struggled a lot in this class, Landry was helpful, I sent maybe 50+ emails about assignments and various course questions and he responded to them all respectfully and insightfully. He did mark a bit tough in my perspective but I found it as a learning opportunity, feedback was helpful. Amazing lecturer though, always explains things clearly
Worst part about him is that he has zero bad things about him and embarrasses other professors, switched from Dr. Minika's class to his, went from a grumpy old lady to a guy who is so bright and funny, shows videos of police tackling suspects and black Friday shoppers punching each other [it's a tort class] so helpful, smart, and good at teaching.
I highly recommend this really great class. The lectures get mentioned a lot, and rightfully so. They never go on unrelated tangents, stay on topic and on schedule, succinctly outline RELEVANT legal principles in the cases, and do a great job summarizing the majority, dissenting, and concurring opinions. Amazing instructor, enjoyed it a lot.
Out of this world good, he applies so many supplementary legal cases to cover issues of breach of duty, causation, strict liability, negligence, and aggravated and punitive damages in tort law. So smart and talented at teaching, if you take him never be afraid to raise your hand he is so fast when it comes to answering questions
I love him and have debated framing a picture of him or asking for his autograph. He clearly loves what he does and is interested in it, never seen someone explain the legal reasoning of judges from the 1900's so clearly. Found him super nice and approachable aswell, really a great person overall.
Just, fair, respectable, and well spoken
I loved him. Have him for LAW410 next semester and cant wait. Truly a great teacher and very knowledgeable.
Really well done lectures. Super smart and loves answering questions, i would recommend asking for lots of advice on the case brief he marks a bit tough but it is worth 35%. His tests are super easy if you study and read the cases and attend lectures.
so so so amazing. loved my two classes with him. His research is extremely interesting, and he loves talking about it. Can teach so well
His assignments really get you thinking and applying course content, I found I retained course content by analyzing case studies which was helpful. His lectures are amazing, and really know what he is talking about and loves it. Talking to him one on one is as useful as by email, all around amazing.
I do not understand the hype, he isn't as good as many say. He marks the case brief so hard, "this legal case isn't supporting your argument" "grammar issues" "citation errors" when you email him he is condescending and says "have you taken a look at the feedback before emailing" Didn't enjoy him and don't recommend. AWFUL
His feedback is incredibly detailed, where you lose marks is displayed without confusion. Emails aren't condescending at all and he tells you to check the feedback because he does it for a reason. Not overrated at all, amazing professor and amazing lectures. This is a response to the review below mine, 1 thumbs down and counting :)
Enjoyed my time with him. Never had someone so understanding and so caring, truly the embodiment of a golden retriever puppy. Waves at me all the time and countless others as we walked in the class, got to know my name alongside many others, gave us mental health days, asked us how we were doing, moved quiz and assignment dates, love him so much.
The God of Tort Law. Always can answer your question, never fails to make class interesting, showed us videos of black Friday shoppers punching and fighting each other [to demonstrate intentional torts of battery], showed us NHL hockey fights too, such a nice guy!!!!
It is so cliche to say, but he truly saved my life. On some of the hardest days his classes were something I could look forward to, always saying in the brightest voice and I don't care about remaining anonymous "Mariah how are you!!" he is so sweet and so so caring, I had so much family drama and he never failed once to help and accommodate me.
Such a nice and approachable guy. Such detailed and engaging lectures, always make you laugh, never get bored once. Cares about you and all of his students, always wants to helps you.
Enjoyed him alot. Clearly loves what he is talking about and really smart about it. The class was very good.
He is easily one of the best lecturers, extremely talented and smart about all aspects of his teachings. Very detailed in class and his tests are set up well.
So incredibly smart, gets to know all of you by your name, asks your name if you raise your hand to participate, makes eye contact with you, smiles, and waves at you as you walk in. Truly the one class where I felt appreciated not just as a student but as a person. Makes his classes apolitical and doesn't judge your opinions.
Absolutely amazing. Such a good lecturer and always open to questions. Assignments are fair and have detailed instructions, tests are fair and test you on lectures and readings. A really well done job.
Sensational. Such a good instructor, clearly teaches the material, never tests you on things not taught or not in readings. Loves answering questions and encourages participation.
Just a big ball of sunshine. Really loves helping you out. Take LAW 410 AB with him and Tort and Contracts. So pleasant.
Marks a bit hard but feedback is helpful, Really nice guy and caring, remembered my name the whole term and I'm a Landry stan. Would take every class with him
Just take the class. Legendary. If you learned about the law yesterday you could still pass his class. He breaks the material down and teaches in such an easy and receptive way, assessments are fair, instructions are detailed. Great guy.
Law department was cooking with this hire. Had him as a TA and now an instructor and phenomenal both times, moved up the ranks quickly and it's well deserved.
I have NEVER seen someone talk about the Criminal Code and all of it's glory so clearly. Such a legendary professor
Yes this class is hard. No the instructor does not make it hard. Loved him, clearly cares about you, study guides, practice questions, posts slides, loves answering questions, involves current events in the legal principles being discussed. All around super good.
Had him as an instructor for 406 and 410, as a TA for 408 and 407. Flawless for all four classes, clearly cares, wants you to succeed, and is so nice.
Enjoy him a lot.
Sensational. Only a couple weeks in and cant wait. Really engages with the course material, rarely uses slides but rather writes main topics on the whiteboard and expands on them. Slides are sometimes used if necessary.
Had him for LAW410 was exceptional. Haven't been assessed in 400 so i cant speak on it but so far is great at lecturing, doesn't supply too many readings.
Mental health takes precedence. Absolutely amazing and so kind. So intelligent in the field sometimes he goes on tangents about history but teaches you so much
So far so good. Really nice guy, cares, likes to talk to students encourages participation.
Had him well over two months ago and still think about him. Sensational and just downright flawless. Knows how to teach and what he is teaching, answers questions incredibly fast, just an amazing person. insightful feedback to help you learn on assignments too
Yes he is difficult but he makes you want to put the work in and you learn a lot from him. He marks you hard because he puts out tons of resources to help you succeed and what his expectations are. Readings are long but approach him if he don't understand something, I always did it and never once left feeling confused
Marks a bit hard but I always knew where and why I lost marks and how i could improve. Wants you to succeed (yes I know I said he marks hard but study guides, practice questions, example assignments, invites you to come to office hours to do assignment revisions) loved him and would recommend him
If you asked if you should take this with him I would say yes. Really nice folk and cares about you and is also very funny.
"Quebec is like the spoiled child in a family" "If you think about it a jury is just a group of people deciding which lawyer is better at yapping" "Some criticize me cause I'm young but teaching but I ask them why they aren't teaching at their grown a** age" These three quotes explain his humour perfectly. Take him. Jokes around but teaches us.
So dang good. Wow. Absolute amazing. Great person 10/10.
Third class with him phenomenal in every single one. Clearly outlines expectations, post rubrics, marking outlines, examples, study guides, practice questions DOING BAD IS IMPOSSIBLE!!! Such a funny guy and always loves answering questions
SOOOOOO GREAT. Love this class
If you participate he will remember you for a long time. He loves getting to know your name and talking to you (go to office hours he loves talking to students) - Exceptional Lecturer knows material like the back of his hand
Super caring I had to miss a week of lectures due to health issues. Offered to re lecture material in office hours, send his lecture notes via email, posts slides to help you really amazing
Really enjoy thus far. Clearly cares and knows what he is teaching and loves answering questions
Lots of readings but he is always willing to clarify or explain them. Great lectures easy to follow. Raising your hand helps him remember you so if you need further help down the road in office hours he is helpful
Fantastic through and through. Knows how to deliver a lecture, makes our class laugh, mental health days and breaks, cares about you. Take him wont regret it
Still remember him to this day. Absolutely remarkable when it comes to teaching, is able to talk and talk for an hour and a half and he loves and knows the material so well. Having a passionate instructor really makes you want to do good.
Great guy love the class
Love him so much. Marks easy if you listen to feedback and instructions. Lectures are so entertaining
I'm in torts 2 and miss Landry… was truly a gem I didn't know until I moved past torts 1. Wish he was teaching torts 2
Wow he is good. Legendary and love the class. Really smart and can answer any question you have
Enjoyed him a lot and really grateful that someone else taught this course after the same prof for 4 years. Landry was great, marked fair, amazing lectures and really cared
Funny guy and the lectures feel unconventional, feels like a relaxed space where everyone can talk not a smart instructor (although landry is) who just talks on and on and thinks they are better than you. Cant Recommend this class enough
TAKE HIM TAKE HIM GAVE US THE BEST FINAL IVE WRITTEN IN THREE YEARS SO FAIR GAVE ME A FIST BUMP AT THE END
Speaks with such knowledge and knows so much about the law. Cried tears of sadness knowing i won't have him until next fall
LIVE LAUGH LOVE LANDRY. Super good as a professor, you know what is expected of you always, never be afraid to ask questions, he is a bit difficult in marking but it is a senior level course so maybe I just need to stop slacking
So worth it to take this class, and man, can he teach. Covers all of the main topics, opens questions, encourages discussion. I hated raising my hand but raised my hand for the first time and slowly gained confidence. Somewhat of a tough grader but I appreciate the feedback and did well.
Truly a rising star in the dept. Needs to become full-time and needs to be kept around, I want to take every class with him.
It's a law class yes but its unnecessarily difficult to do well. Lots of readings, he covers them well in lecture so make sure you attend. He gives lots of instructions, examples, and a rubric for the assignments but often this many sources leaves you confused. His practice questions were definitely much harder compared to the actual exams.
Really enjoyed him, excited to take future courses with him. Found office hours very approachable and helpful, loved the opportunities for bonus marks and how kind he was.
Loveeee him, great instructor knows his law and i loved how i could ask him questions both in class and after if i didnt understand something. Super accessible in email and a great person!
Such a good prof. Amazing
Prepared us so well for the final exam. Amazing guy. Will take again
Enjoy family law with him, covers principles well. Case law isn't too lengthy.
