great lecturer. uses power point presentations very well and is well spoken. extremely helpful and approachable. gives good paper topics, and tests are fair but need preparation.
he's thorough and good at powerpoint. the topic leaves something to be desired.

He uses a lot of visuals to keep students from falling asleep (even though some do still). He's really helpful and seems to care a lot about students doing well in his class. I enjoyed his class. He's clear with his lecture, although he speaks quickly.
Prof Lee is so far handsdown the best ****in western civilization history Prof i have ever had...makes u want to be one!
Lectures are kinda dull...but the info he gives in lectures is exactly what's on the tests. Really nice guy who goes out of his way to make sure his students understand the material.
Every class I went to was interesting because Professor Lee explained History as a story with themes, characters, and with a sense of continuity. The class was cool enough that it influenced me to change majors to History.
An excellent teacher. Condenses over 10,000 years of history perfectly. Has me wanting to be a professor!
An excellent teacher who inspired me to chose history as a major. He is clear and entertaining in his lectures, very kind and approachable, and goes out of his way to make sure his students know the material.
such an interesting class! he is an excellent speaker and covered the material thoroughly. the tests and paper are demanding, but doable. TAs could be better.
i loved his class. i hate history but i would take another history class if he were the professor.
Lee is an excellent professor. Compassionate about his teachings and very approachable outside of the classroom. Lots of reading is required but his lectures are great and gives midterm and final revies sheets. Definitely hope to have him again.
Class was easy, be sure to go to every lecture becuase 80% of the tests were on lecture notes. PRAY to God that you don't get Ibukun Bloom as a TA, he's a dick grader and could lower your grade becuase TAs grade essay portion of exams.
I loved Professor Lee's teaching style. You know exactly what to expect on the midterm and the final. The class was awesome. You gotta work for your grade, but you definately know what to study and are given excellent resources to assit you.
Lee is an awesome teacher. He is fun and knowledgable and keeps the class interested. And he has a bunch of tattoos.
Class was worth going to...good powerpoint...makes history fun
So great. Midterm and Final review sheets are the best. TA matters a lot on grades, get an easy grader cause two essays and my ta was a b-tch about essays.
A GREAT LECTURER!! WONDERFUL!!
Very good lectures on a not so interesting topic.funny&sensitive to the fact this is a GE class. What kills in this class are the TA's most of whom are kinda crappy, he could kick their butts a little more to work harder/be better graders.
very good teacher! always woke me up after sociology, my ta bethanie was great, but a strict grader, if you get her, go to her office before you turn in the essay for suggestions
Great class, great teacher, horrible T.A.
Prof. Lee was a great lecturer! He made history so interesting! Try to get a nice TA (if there are any) because they can make or break or grade.
prof. lee rocks my socks. his study guides rule.
Thorough, interesting, and connects ideas. Challenging course, but understood through lectures. Difficult grader.
Professor Lee makes history interesting and fun. I talked to him in his office and he was very helpful, friendly, and easy to talk to.
A very helpful teacher. Top notch professor and I fully enjoyed his class.
i agree with most people, this will probabaly the best class i'll ever have. Lee's passion not only made history exciting, but also showed us that we should love what we do.
Great history class! His lectures are top notch and the readings are very appropriate/interesting. He gives out complete study guides for the tests, which is nice & unique for the hist. department. 2 short papers and HW depends on TA's (some give HW, some give quizes). I wish I had Lee for 4C!!
Great Professor-Made the lectures interesting to the point that I'm gonna get a history minor now. Definitely take his classes if you have the option.
great prof. loves the subject and is really helpful. tests are really fair and you get all the essay topics and IDs for the midterm and final before the test. Eric Fournier is the best TA ever! Really helpful, understanding, and fair
Fairly hard teacher, lectures are hard to take notes on, but very passionate. Always there if you need help. If you like the subject, you'll love the professor, if you hate it, then you'll hate the class.
Lee's lectures are always terrific, but they have little to do with the primary source readings that inform the paper assignments and exams. Discussion section becomes the primary refuge for students hoping to do well. Papers are expected to meet stringent but ultimately just standards.
Prof Lee is awesome. He's passionate and interesting to listen to. Fair tests and grading. Just do the reading and go to lecture and its all good- Lee really tries to help you do well and is very willing to help.
The class was a bit challenging but the questions he asked for the midterm and final were very thought-provoking. He is very friendly and appreciates it when you stop by his office hours.

Prof Lee is a very nice guy and always willing to help his students.
A REALLY KNOWLEDGABLE GUY. HE KNOWS HIS STUFF AND GIVES CLEAR CONCISE LECTURES. HIS EXAMS ARE FAIR, NOT TO HARD NOT TO EASY.
Seems like his class goes on forever, but you learn a lot.
I like history alot, and i found him to be very unorganized, unclear, and BORING. yeah, he gives you all the questions to the test, but his lectures lack substace, thus making it hard to understand the course.
prof. Lee is very clear about all the themes in his History class, making it easy to understand the important events and do well in his exams.
I personally love History, but I'd heard horror stories about 4A. Prof Lee, however, was awesome. His lectures were absolutely fascinating, and his study guides were a big help for the midterm and final. I regret not going to his office hours, but he did seem a bit intimidating. In conclusion, he's one of the best professors I've had.
Lee is a solid professor. The course material for 4A is fairly interesting and the lectures were as such. He's pretty young and seems to be rather enthusiastic about the material. the tests were reasonable although the TA's graded rather rigorous on the papers
Professor Lee is a very good professor. His power points make the lectures more interesting and he is enthusiastic about the material. Also, he was very helpful when I went to his office hours to have one of my essays reviewed. He read the entire essay and wrote a lot of useful comments on it.
He's a good lecturer and has good powerpoints; not too hard of a class.
prof lee was a very good professor... his lectures were clear and interesting, tests were very fair.. i would def. take another class with him
Amazing professor, one of the best i have had here so far. He is really interested in the subject matter and he passes on that enthusiasm to the students. Plus his specialty is ancient warfare so that makes it a cooler class for me because i am also interested in that area. Two short papers, midterm and final are most of your grade.
Great teacher really fair grader who outlines all the midterms and final for you so you know exactly what to study. Helps out a lot if you ask for it and is very knowelegable on his subject matter. makes lecture interesting.
I've never enjoyed a history class until I had Prof Lee. His lectures are really organized, but not boringly so, and he tells you exactly what you need to know before each test. My TA rocked too, which might have just been my luck, but I think Lee gave a lot of guidance to his TAs, which I'm finding is rare.
Professor was clear and precise. Lectures were will organized and included handouts. One of my favorite classes, one of my favority professors.
Class was a bit boring at times, but Prof Lee is the best, his lectures are very clear and organized, his tests are very straightforward and fair, and there's not a massive amount of reading which is nice. He really made the best out of a sort of boring subject. Def. take any class with Lee!!!
Great teacher, very helpful, offers extra credit, gives you a study guide, which the test has exactly same stuff on it, gives you mini essays, which only needs to be 250-500 words, I would def. recommend any one to take any of his classes, one of the best teachers at UCSB
Prof. Lee is very knowledgable in the subject of Bronze Age Greece. Keep up with the readings and use his study guides for tests. He is open to questions and uses powerpoint for all lectures.
Well I just took this dude's midterm, and it was **** hard. If you did ALL the reading and THOROUGHLY understood it, you might get an A. Multiple choice were hard but fair, some of the short answers were absolutely ridiculous. Interesting teacher, nice guy, but **** that midterm. Just wow.
Excellent teacher. Very helpful. Clear lecture style, interested in the big picture not meaningless details. He has not one trace of arrogance which is refreshing in a professor.
The exams are difficult. Reading helps but is not enough. You MUST go to lecture. Professor Lee is an expert. He knows his stuff really well. Impressive how he has all this information in his head and barely anything written on the slides he shows. Information was fascinating.
exams are very difficult and did not address any of the bug stuff covered. also, there are way too many documents to read wherein it becomes the whole class, just reading document after document that really have no point. The whole 2 series is horrible, try and take other history classes
Professor Lee was one of the best professors I have ever had. He was organized, clear, and knew the subject very well. The class was moderately hard, but going to lectures helped. Reading is also important. I also had a great TA which contributed greatly to my success in the class.
Smart guy, would take him again. TA makes or breaks the class. Caton was my TA and was nice. For the whole quarter: no joke, did 20% of the reading, if that, got a B in the class, got a curved D+ on the first midterm. Papers were easy, did them both the night before. Final was very fair if you did the reading. At 1st glance: this class seems harder
Ok class. Pretty tough to be honest. Quite some reading, you heavily depend on your TAs though. I read about 30% of all the assigned reading, still pulled off a B.
His multiple choice ?s for the midterm were hard! but thats ok bc he curved it and said that he's not going to do it anymore, so lucky for those who take him later. Lee is a very entertaining lecturer. The material was pretty dry but he made it interesting. i liked him as a professor AND nice to look at too :P
Lee is an awesome professor. Greek hist can be dry, but he is really cool, extremely knowledgable, and totally clear about what he wants you to know. A lot of the reading can be skipped if you pay attn to what he emphasizes in class and use the study guides. Midterm, final, and a couple easy document reviews. Definitely recommended for hist majors.
Professor Lee will tell you pretty much everything you need to do to get an A in his class. He will give you hints on what the quizzes will cover. His guideline for the final paper points you in the right direction. Plus, he's a interesting albeit laid back lecturer. Recommend taking a course from him.
Good Professor, keeps the entire class interested, great storyteller. Two Papers (3pg and 6pg). Mid Term and Final contain Essay, Maps and IDs. Lee gives you enough info prior to be prepared for all of it. We had 4 books and web readings. I'd Recommend.
I hated this class. It was so boring. He never made lectures interesting and the midterm was difficult. He fixed the format for the final to make it better though. Make sure to review your notes several times to understand the material because he asks random multiple choice questions.
Fast talker and hard to keep up with. No midterm just simple MC questions. Final was kinda hard but he gives you the essay prompts in advance. I recommend actually paying attention in class if you want to do well possible record him since he does talk so fast. Great guy overall btw doesn't take kindly to cheaters!!!
quiz was ok if you keep up with the readings, no midterm. Final exam was hard but questions were given to study for. And he is good to look at:)
Prof Lee is so interesting and intelligent, I love taking his classes. He is always experimenting with new ways to make learning better. He likes a lot of participation but is fair and understanding when a person is shy. I would highly suggest taking any of his upper division courses, I've never taken a lower with him.
Professor Lee is an excellent professor. His lectures are very clear and well organized. He is interesting when he talks and not bad to look at either. He is always really helpful and very available to talk with students. I would highly recommend taking any of his classes. I've taken both lower and upper division and they were great!
Professor Lee is the best professor I've had at UCSB. His lectures really catch your attention and make you want to go to class. My quarter we had 3 papers and a final. The papers were tough but fair and the final was easy if you were prepared. He gives a good study guide and really wants you to do well. Got me to love world history.
The only textbook you will really need is the Confucius and the reader. Class was boring but Professor Lee was a cool guy.
Best class i have taken here at ucsb! Super fun and easy! Sections are mandatory however class is not! I only bought the reader and the Confucius book! Actually read the reader! Final is essays which are so fun and he gives u prompt in advance! TAKE HIS CLASS HE ROCKS!
Does well to keep you interested for the whole hour & 15 minute lecture. Lectures are enjoyable. There is a lot of reading but make sure not to get behind because the final completely relies on you knowing and understanding the entire reader. Confucius is important for essays, the other books are not that important. Overall I loved him as a prof!
AMAZING PROFESSOR. He is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. But he does make you work for your grade. Do all the readings, fill out the study guides and participate. My favorite professor at UCSB.
He was cool.
Prof Lee is an amazing person and great teacher. He is passionate about Greek history - speaks Greek too - and shares his enthusiasm with his students. I look forward to taking more classes with Prof Lee :)
Prof Lee has by far been one of the coolest teachers at UCSB i've taken. He cares about the subject and about every student understanding the course. He has video lectures you watch at home and then spends all class going in depth on them. Low stakes quizzes every class and discussion for your participation grade, a research paper and a final.
Prof Lee is a wonderful teacher and mentor. He is incredibly passionate about Greek history, and loves facilitating students' questions with thoughtful answers. Being in lecture, anyone can see his enthusiasm for the material being covered, and any questions students ask. His midterm/final are very fair, and essays are relevant to tests.
Professor Lee is awesome, definitely my favorite professor I have had. He cares so much about his students and is an awesome guy. Very fair grader, do the work and you will do well in his class. Usually lets you have either a sheet of notes for tests, or changes things up to make it more student-friendly.
No structure between lecture and section. Lectures are boring and include random information. Midterm was hard, had very specific and random multiple choice questions. Average for the class was a D. I would not recommend this class. He seems nice but he is not a good lecturer.
Super nice guy but his class is tough and a little disorganized. There's not a lot of correlation between weekly readings and lecture, and section didn't help clarify things a whole lot either. The tests are hard too, so it's important to try and get as many points as you can elsewhere.
Professor Lee had some of the most itrevelant lectures to the class. Slides and lectures were very scattered and the sections did not help to address what was discussed in class. READ! You cant fall behind on the readings or else you wont pass. He does a poor job discussing the readings in lecture and their relation to what hes teaching
He assigns obscenely long readings each week while giving lectures that are dry and tangentially related to those readings. His lectures are disorganized so it's super difficult to know what's important. MC midterm wasn't too bad but the final requires 2 blue books so be prepared to memorize a lot. Seems like a nice guy but not a great professor
HIs lecture is confusing but you can skip if you keep up to date with the readings because you will hate yourself so so much otherwise! I never read a page of the Haywood and performed poorly on the multiple choice midterm. However, I knew the reader extremely well and ended up with an A in the class and on the short answer style final.
Lectures did not correlate with the long and uninteresting readings assigned every week. Section helped tremendously, although that depends on your TA. DO NOT SLACK! I suggest making a study group with a few people to ease the workload, especially when studying for the final. Overall, he seems like a passionate dude but not the best teacher.
Scattered and random lectures. Just throws random names, places, and events at you. He's super passionate so most of the time I couldn't get mad at him because he was so cute fawning over Greece. Otherwise this class was the bane of my existence and the textbook we used was terrible. If you take it you'll survive but you'll be bored.
Super interesting course, and Lee is a really nice, caring person. It requires a TON of reading, but overall the material is interesting and its a great class for majors to take.
lectures are super confusing, moves super fast and doesn't have anything written on the powerpoint. lectures are super boring and he assigns lots of readings.
I took this course during the pandemic so your experience may vary. But Prof. Lee lectures were uploaded from what seems to be a previous TV special that he did, but they were very well done. The course was difficult in the sense that there was a lot of writing and not much to be graded on meaning reading was necessary. Good course overall.
Professor Lee seems to be way too busy to brother answering your emails, and if you do ever get a hold of him or its to ask a favor or accommodation his ego will write the email for him. In his mind, despite any internet issues or external circumstances students can all find ways to do his essays, so he wont help you out. Also bad lecturer.
easily the worst class ive ever taken. lee truly expects you to treat his class like your only class. the grade largely depends on two papers (which can be graded harshly by tas) and the final, in which he expects you to have memorized every source from the textbook and lectures (which are scattered and not helpful). PLEASE take any other ge
Lectures were tangential but passively interesting, show up and take notes because the lecture material will be important for the final. If you have a good TA, the class is a breeze. If your TA is a tough grader, good luck.
Literally the most horrible and annoying professor i've ever had. The lectures are horrible and boring, and are on random things that do not even correspond to the readings. His final is super hard and based in memorization. Also, your grade depends on how difficult a TA grades 2 essays. Take a different GE
I loved this class and I love Prof. Lee. His lectures are engaging, expand on topics from the textbook. Not especially necessary to attend, I went cuz I enjoyed. Nice man, replies to emails quickly and kindly. InQuizitives were fun and interactive. Lots of reading. Final was slightly different than how I thought it would be, challenging.
Lectures were pretty interesting, make sure to take notes because theyre important for the final! Essays had fairly easy prompts and my TA provided lots of feedback and graded fine. Allowed 2 pages of notes for the final. This class isnt hard if you put in a little effort.
Yeaaaa this class was easy. Professor is a cool dude but the lectures were boring. Read the textbook, you'll be chilling. Don't read, man ya facked! Scored an A on the final without doing a lick for studying. Cool guy. Probably would be more interesting in an upper div.
Professor Lee was very nice for allowing me to be a remote student for his in-person class. He spends most of the class lecturing to the students, so you need to pay attention. He assigns a bunch of reading from Xenophon's book. Luckily, there is only one book to purchase for this course. All and all, I really enjoyed Prof Lee and his course!
Honestly he seems like a really nice guy, he's super passionate about Greek history and that is clearly his passion, but don't take history 2a with him. The lectures are all over the place and aren't organized. He rambles about random stuff that has nothing to do with the papers/assignments. If you get a good TA, they will be helpful tho
I am a really slow reader, so I struggled a lot in Lee's class, but I learned so much in his class. If you like to read especially about history, then you will enjoy his class a lot. If you just want to satisfy your GE requirement, take some easier class.
Professor Lee is enthusiastic, caring, and lenient. He is understanding of the situation and would gladly help out within his capabilities; would 10/10 take him again.
Overall great guy and good lecturer. Lecture got a bit boring at times but was very informative. Section participation matters. Pretty easy midterm and final. Got to bring legal sized piece of paper with notes for final.
He is enthusiastic about the course material, but lectures could be a bit boring and unorganized. Go to the lectures, take notes, read the readings and you'll be fine. Also you can bring a legal size note sheet to the final which was great.
Prof. Lee was so interested in the subject that it was difficult not to get excited about it as well. The readings could be hard to get through, but sections were helpful in making sure you got everything you could out of them. Midterm and final had study guides, so you knew exactly how to prepare and we could take a note sheet to the final.
This class is an easy grade if you want to take it for general education. I took his class in my fall quarter, the test was easy. He gives you study guides and allows a cheat-cheat. There was one mid-term, one final, and two papers that were due over the course. Take this course if you want an easy A!
very weirdly structured class. makes you buy a reader he could've easily made a PDF so that it was accesible to everyone. assigned seating during lecture. wouldn't reccomend unless you're ready to read a lot. also, doesn't allow a cheat sheet on the midterm like so many past comments. not that great of a professor overall.
For what supposedly is an easy class, this was the hardest I've worked for a GE grade. Covers too much content at a fast pace. You have to memorize a ton of locations for the final, often mentioned once or twice in lecture ever. You also have to read 2 books and a very expensive course reader. Very long final with broad essay questions.
Not a history person but Prof Lee makes everything feel interesting. Slides are posted but most of info comes from actual lecture, attendance is important to understanding the class. Section attendance is mandatory. There's one paper but it's only 1250-1500 words. Cheat sheet allowed on the final was very helpful. He wants you to succeed! Fun class
Professor Lee is an expert in Mediterranean history, making this topic quite fun. He likes to have fun in class, and lectures are usually not dull due to his personality. No electronics, handwritten notes only that you must submit at the end of the week so you have to go to class. lots of readings. midterm, paper, and final. final is open note.
very nice guy, GET SAM FOR YOUR TA, class is very chill but go to class. midterm is super easy, paper is easy if you listen to what your TA says, and you get a full piece of paper for the final. there are a lot of books you have to buy which sucks but its easy to find online PDFs
He obviously loves and has a passion for history. HOWEVER when it comes to preparing for tests, as a student I felt kind of lost. All I had to my disposal was the notes I took in class that were kind of all over, and it was hard to tell what stuff I needed to know and what was filler. The comic books had the same problem. No guide on what I needed.
Professor Lee clearly cares about his students and caters the class to help students better understand the material. He is very helpful in answering questions in class and in office hours. Lots of reading and group discussions of primary sources, but nothing crazy for an upper division class. All of the reading is useful/relevant to the class.
i loved 4a with prof lee so chose to take this. so amazing he is really caring and genuinely passionate. makes the class really fun. brought us pizza for the final and let us use it as a review session for the essay. beyond reasonable with the amount of work assigned and is really approachable
