Stutters and makes fun of the mentally ill, which is not very professional in my opinion. Smiles alot but don't let that fool you! He seems to care only about himself and after the class is over he takes off and is not available for questions! Five books are req'd and he is oh so boring! Good Luck to the bold and brave who don't drop his 349.
I was really looking forward to this class. The information was great, but he taught using a chalkboard and scratchy video tapes. One of the most painfully boring classes, even though I loved the material. 5 books to buy - big bill! Hard grader, the grades he gives dont seem to have bearing to what effort you put into it.
he is very easy and the tests were very easy, just read a TINY but of the book and take very good class notes. but man oh man what a JERRKKKKK!!!!
Material is boring as hell but i think he does a good job with the material. He's not a hard grader at all he just wants to make sure you read the material and so he looks for a lot of detail in the essay part of the test. I didn't do well on the first test but after talking to himand finding out what he wanted i did great. I would take him again
Nice guy, cracks a lot of corny jokes. Encourages a lot of class discussion; really tries to make you think about material. Stutters a lot, but don't hold that against him. Do the work and you'll pass.
There are only 4 grades in the class: midterm, final & 2 papers (also attendance). He drops one grade (not the final) so that helps. If u take good notes in class and read the books he assigns you shud do fine. I'm a psych major & never learned the history of the treatment of mental illness so I thought it was really interesting to learn about that
Made the class very interesting but maybe it was just the topic. Videos are old but you have 4 tests which are real easy. You get the essay topics before hand
The material is thought provoking. Moves at a nice pace. Is somewhat forgiving with grades. Shows a valued interest in the topic. I don't know why but it's hard to pay attention, but I don't attribute that to his teaching. He does try to make it interesting. 2 exams, 2 papers, several blackboard discussions & group assignments. Studders a lot.
Great class, he is a great teacher. Give him time and you will see. Definatly worth taking.
Hands down, I've learned more from him than any other professor @ WCU. He is really dedicated to his studies & his interest in the material is obvious. He explains things really well and is HILARIOUS if you get his humor. I would highly recommend taking his class if you're up for a challenge. You can def learn a lot from him if you assert yourself
Dr. Leveille is a great professor! His theory class is difficult, but I've learned more in his class than any other class at WCU. He is funny and loves what he does, which makes class fun!
One of the most intelligent prof I have ever had. I left this class feeling like I really got something out of it. It was interesting as well. The one thing about Leveille is he really isn't interested in you individually. He's a great teacher but don't expect him to do you any favors. I HIGHLY reccomend this class!!!!!!
I only took this course because it's a gen ed and the rating here was good. He's horrible. He never explains topics in lecture, and he assigns a lot of reading that is never discussed. If he doesn't agree with your point of view, he'll give you a bad grade. I definitely don't suggest him.
This was one of the best classes I have ever taken. The essay grading was very fair and if you put effort into your work you will get a great grade. If you get a chance to take this class do it. You will have a blast.
I was looking forward to his class yet it was a big disappointment. He assigned an observed amount of reading and tests you from no material that is presented in the class. If you do not memories all of the readings in his class you will not do well at all. The professor only wants to have discussions, on the topic not what will be on the test.
This professor is looking to fail as many studens as he can. He does not add all information in the lecture that he will test you on. To pass the class stroke his huge ego allot, and go to his office so he can feel like a big man. Most of the test material is from the massave amount of boring readings.
Good luck to anyone who takes soc300 because he is the only professor who teaches it. Make sure you pay attention because his notes are all pretty much verbal with some key information on the board. He says right after everything and stutters. I learned nothing from this class and I went to basically every class. Good Luck.
He is really passionate about what he teaches. He is a great teacher and a funny guy. Take good notes and you will do fine on the exams, I didn't read every chapter but it does help if you do. Show up and takes notes and you'll do fine in his class!
Dr. Leveille killed my interested with this class. It was not at all what I thought it was going to be. He is hard to understand because of his stutter. The tests are impossible and he asks essay questions that are at grad school level. He thinks he is hot stuff because he wrote a book that was never published. Definitely a professor to avoid.
The lectures aren't that bad. You just have to show up to class everyday. I went to him get help after class and he was very rude and unhelpful, it made me even more confused. Its a very hard class because of the test. I got what what was going on in class but not on his test. I went to class everyday and studied my but off and got a C
He bombards you with socialist propaganda, rehashes history through a filter of someone who doesn't believe in mental illness, and then tests you on concretes that don't relate in any way to the abstracts you discussed. Also, he assigned us to read a chapter of his unpublished book. This wasn't Mental Illness in Society, this was Leveille 101.
UGH he stutters, he's opinionated and conceited, and he doesn't care about his students. He just wants them all to agree with his outlandish ideas. He taught perspectives on mental illness, and all I knew by the end of the semester was HIS perspective, which was that mental illness doesn't exist.
Go to class everyday! take very good notes! Read the book(worst book ever. His test are extremely hard, its like he is trying to fail you! The only reason why I passed the class is because I went to class everyday and took notes! Don't go to his office hours he will just confuse you more! Good luck
He's too smart for WCUPA. He's also passionate and emotional (not always the best). Don't pull a last second, "What can I do to get an A?" Go to office hours early if he's teaching too high of a lvl; do the reading/class work. I've learned more from his classes than any of my other classes, but they're definitely not taught at a state school level.
Dr. Leveille, oh what can I say....I love this guy! He is the reason why I chose to go to graduate school for sociology! Although the information is dense, he means well and wants you to really be interested in the subject! Plus he is HILARIOUS!
I loved his class. Dr. Leveille is a great professor. He is very helpful and explains the content very well. I really enjoyed his class, and would not mind taking another one from him.
Leveille is the best! He has a very unique teaching style and I would understand people not liking it, but personally his free speaking lectures made me feel much more engaged than following a power point. His tests can be quite difficult but if you see him during his office hours he is more than willing to make you feel prepared!
The answers for the tests were the same thing as what I had written in my notes. If you attend class and write what he puts on the board the tests should be easy. There are kind of a lot of assignments but as long as you try he gives full credit.
Go to class! Difficult but worth it. Learned more from him than any other prof at WCU.... By a long shot.
I took this class on mental illness because I'm very interested in the subject. But according to Professor Leveille mental illness does not exist. The entire class was his opinion and when I even attempted to ask questions I was shut down immediately. He's not clear at all and does not know what he's talking about.
His lectures are so much fun! I learned so much from him!
Best teacher I've had at WCU! Definitely majoring in Sociology now!!
He is a terrible professor. His lectures are boring, and he says narrow minded and chauvinist things. Also, once I asked him if I could email him an assignment because I was sick, due to a documented disability, and he said no and gave me a zero on the assignment anyway.
If you put the work in and ask questions, you will do well. Totally worth it!
Hard, but he'll help if you ask... loves the French!
Ask him about French theory... guaranteed tangent
assigns readings of 5 chapters at a time but doesn't discuss them in class, definitely on exams. Make sure you do good on exams, only three and no other assignments. Nice guy but really boring class.
Only 3 Tests and some reaction papers that are only one page long. He is really good at explaining concepts and he follows the syllabus pretty close. Just write down whatever he writes on the board and study your notes and you should get an A. The course was pretty easy overall
This is one Tough class, well the response papers are easy but the test are really challenging, He is a nice guy but the class is by far boring
His lectures might be the most boring thing I've ever sat through. He only gives three test all semester and your final grade is between them and your attendance. He doesn't really tell you what is on the test. Just tells you its on 6 chapters which is about 200 pages of information. I will never take him again.
Professor L is a nice guy, but his teaching is rather boring and he is confusing at times. He doesn't do much to get students interested, he just talks and talks. He tries to make jokes to lighten the mood but for the most part the class consists of him just talking excessively. you rarely have a chance to participate in his class. lots of notes
He's a weird, quirky guy but you can tell he loves what he teaches. He lectures and goes on and on, but you just write what he says and tells you to write and listen. I look forward to going to this class. You read 3 books and if you don't read them you can still pass by bs-ing stuff but obviously if you read you will do better. I would take again
Very nice guy but definitely a little quirky. Lectures are very boring he writes notes on the board. You are assigned multiple readings every week but he will never discuss them. Your only grades will be your 3 exam grades and attendance.
Leveille was not a bad Professor but he only grades attendance and 3 exams total. In order to pass the class, you need to GO TO CLASS TO TAKE NOTES & read/skim through the material in the textbooks that will be covered on the exams. There is a multiple choice section and a short essay section- 3 small essay prompts; one optional take home.
I never studied and never read any of the 3 books he assigned and still got a A- in the class! He's not an amazing lecturer in terms of making information get really stuck in your head, but he tells you a lot of information and does teach good.
Quirky guy, nice enough though. The class was not hard, but you do need to take notes in his class for sure. The tests were not too bad, and thankfully there was not a lot of homework either. We had to read three books but it was not bad at all
Gives very clear lectures but they are on a chalk board and no notes online. Very opinionated person who takes time away from class to express his opinions. Good with teaching info but would not take again based on personality.
Dr. Leveille is great at explaining things and making you actually think. He doesn't read off power points, you just have to write down whatever he writes on the board and you'll do fine. Dont skip class though. Only 3 major tests are graded so make sure you study and know your stuff and you'll pass.
Def one of the most boring professors I have ever had. He shoves his political opinions down your throat constantly. He calls people of the opposite political party cowards and other names. We do the same thing in class every single day and its honestly incredibly boring.
Class was lecture heavy and boring, he tried to tell jokes but you could never tell if he was serious. The class was a lot of reading, you have to read the textbook and what ever he posts on D2L. Class wasnt that difficult if you take notes and come to class, but it is dreadful to sit through. There are only 3 tests that make up your grade.
Only grades based off of 4 exams. Lectures are brutally boring, but he is a nice guy.
Nice guy in all, But oh boy. GET READY TO READ!!! If you don't read the textbook you will have trouble getting a solid grade you would like. As long as you read the textbook and D2L Notes you'll be fine. But make sure to read them. Also, 10 percent of your grade is attendance so show up to class.
Quite possibly the worst professor I've had in all of my years at this university. Avoid taking at all costs.
Professor Leveille is a pleasant guy and is pretty nice but his lectures are the most boring you will take. In the beginning he tells you it's not always lectures but there is, every single class. Your grade is based off of three tests including the final and five optional extra credit essays. I didn't get the books and passed with a C.
Dr. Leveille's class is all lectures... every single day. It is beyond boring. He's a nice guy but very politically outspoken. He talks about politics & constantly lectures us on how awful our president and goes on long rants about him that has nothing to do with class. If you hate lectures or are not a liberal... do not take this class!
very boring class, lots of reading.
Leveille lectures every single class. They are boring and confusing. he then tests you on 300 pages and gives you different readings every week. I would avoid this class at all costs. This was a huge waste of my time and money
Would not recommend... lectures go off on tangents and are confusing... tough tests, tough grader.
Not worth taking this class. There are many other SOC professors that are much easier. He grades essays due almost every friday and teaches more of his own beliefs than actual sociology. His tests are hard and he does not have powerpoints, he just talks and you have to write what he says and hope you get it all. Also really boring.
I love professor leveille. If someone didnt put much energy into his class I could see how they wouldnt like it. Leveille goes very in depth with the information he teaches. His explanations during lectures can get complex so that can be good for someone who is ready to put a good amount of energy into the class. I love how he gives a lot of analog
SOC should be an easy gen ed that helps your GPA and this class will do the exact opposite. You can find a MUCH easier SOC200 prof at WCU so there's no reason to take this class. If there's no profs left then take it next semester because it's not worth it. Leveille's hard to follow, gives terrible notes and studying for his exams is useless.
ok so he's not the worst professor I have had here. in the beginning I was very nervous because he made it seem like the tests would be impossible but I ended up with a 99/100 on the first test and I did not read the two books for the term paper which is 30% of your grade but I ended up with an A. just show up to class, yea he's a little boring
He lectures every single class and sometimes they can be very boring or very confusing. You definitely have to read the textbook to do well on quizzes and assignments. Not very assignment heavy but definitely tough to pass with little grading.
Expects you to read way too much for a gen ed class. It took me hours to read through everything he assigned for each week. He lectures every class and he can make simple material confusing. But if you put in the work you can finish with a good grade.
A lot of reading, hard to know what information you need to know for the exams between readings and the lectures.
Dr. Leveille is a great professor, but his teaching style isnt for everyone. If you dont like lectures, dont take a class with him. Every class is a lecture, and you are tested on the notes you take and readings he assigns outside of class... lots of readings. You really have to read them to do well. Be ready to put in some work. Its worth it.
Prof Leveille is very... full of himself. It gets a little annoying; he's almost rude about it. He's very knowledgeable though. Classes are completely lectures, so only take it if you have a decent attention span. He's a pretty tough grader on papers, and his tests are hard.
Professor Leveille definitely knows sociology, but he makes it very, very clear that he thinks he knows everything else as well. If you don't enjoy professors pushing their personal political views on you, don't take this class. His tests are very difficult, so if you don't read and don't pay close attention to his lectures, good luck.
This is definitely not an easy A. You need to make sure to do the readings (which there are a lot) and go to lectures in order to pass. He also gave a few group projects throughout the semester. I will say that his lectures were very informative and he did not just read off slides. He is a nice guy and clearly knows what he is talking about.
Although Professor Leveille is probably a nice person outside of this class, I did not like him as a professor. I don't think that professors should be so involved in politics. This was all he talked about and basically called some students dumb for rooting for a specific president in the 2020 election.
You need to get the listed textbook and pay attention in class. exams are from both lectures and the textbook. final isnt cumulative, complete 4/6 assigned group projects and study. can be hard to focus in his class as he talks so much some stuff is interesting.
Professor Leveille is a nice man who means well, but I was not a fan of his class. The course was graded on 3 exams, group projects, and attendance. There is A LOT of reading required that is necessary to do well on his exams, the exams are not easy at all. The class is very difficult for a level 100. But with lots of effort, you'll do well.
Nice guy, but lectures are boring
Do NOT take this professor. If it is the only class available, wait for the next semester to take it. He is VERY biased in his political views, and believes that he is right in everything. WAY too much assigned readings for a gen-ed. Tests are hard, I averaged 70s and I am a good student who studies hard and goes to every class.
Buddy talks all 50 minutes and doesn't like being interrupted. He had three grades in the book and they are all exams. I am taking a 100 level class and I feel like he's teaching at 2-300 level.
Dr. Leveille is not a bad professor but the exams can be difficult. He talks for the entire class but knows what he is talking about. If you do not go to lectures, you will not pass the exams. I didn't do all of the readings but I still passed the exams because he will tell you what readings you need to complete for the exam. He loves what he does!
He seems like a good person outside of the classroom, but to save your GPA DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He gives three exams( one of them being the final) and that is all you will be graded on. The exams are based on the readings and lectures. If you miss class you WILL fail.
Dr. Leveille clearly loves what he does and seems like a nice person outside of the classroom setting, but this is a VERY difficult class for a level 100. You are only graded on three exams (one is the final) and attendance. Also, get ready to read because there are a LOT of required readings. If you don't attend class, you'll fall very far behind.
This class is A LOT for a gen ed 100 course. You are graded on 3 exams and attendance. You have readings (on ur own time) each week (3-4, 20ish pgs each)- theyre long and dont make sense, so I recommend finding summaries. He often posts what the essays will be, so keep up with them.
Dr. Leveille has amazing lectures. He definitely knows sociology and how to teach the subject. However, the amount of readings you have to do in this class is insane. Also, the readings and lectures are found on all of the tests. Attendance is mandatory and you are only graded on the 3 exams and attendance.
This class was challenging, and there was a lot to learn/memorize. For the textbook readings, you do NOT need to read the actual text, you just need the vocab from it. This class really is not that bad if you go to class, do the readings, and study some.
Prof Leveille has great political views and ideas. His class was very lecture heavy. Come to class and make sure you pay attention! You need to read the textbook to stay up to date in the class. He grades only by 3 exams and attendance. IF YOU ARE BAD AT TESTS DO NOT TAKE THIS! If you go to his office hours he does not help you. I've tried.
He is beyond horrible. He is so rude and does not help at all. his lectures is just him talking AT you the entire time. Don’t bother asking questions because he wont give you the answer you are looking for. He will not care about any excuses even if they are legit. His exam are difficult prepare to study. 0/5
If you like spending your weekends reading 200 pages of sociology then this is the class for you. you are only graded on attendance and 3 exams that are nearly impossible to study for becuase of the volume of information you are expected to retain. I am an A student and this class was beyond hard for literally no reason being a 100 level
An insane amount of reading, and you are only graded on 3 exams the whole semester. Not personable at all and unapproachable. He is a know it all and is condescending. If you want a good gpa never take this class you have been warned
Seemed like a nice guy but this was truly the worst class I have ever taken. His lectures were very difficult to sit through, not because of the material at all, but because of Dr. Leveille's monotone voice and old school teaching/lecture style. His lectures had me yawning the entire 50 minutes.
Take the class you will see
No work to look over after class is done, just reading a big book.
Professor Leveille is great at his job. There are a lot of readings but that's really the only assignments he gives. His lectures are thorough and he provides a lot of knowledge about each topic. If you complete the readings and take notes during lectures you will pass.
his classes are very tough, especially for a 100 level course if you're taking soc100. there is a lot of reading. your entire grade is based on 3 exams, no other coursework or anything to bring up your grade. despite all that, this was probably the most entertaining class i've ever taken. not sure how to describe it but iykyk lol
He is the worst professor ever. No homework, grades you only on attendance and four exams. For the exams, you have to remember basically every single thing you have ever read and everything he has ever said in a lecture or you will fail. He goes off topic and I never knew what he was even talking about. Not helpful at all so don't try to email him.
He lectures on the chalkboard and doesn't use D2L very much, so be aware of that. However, he is very thorough in his lectures, so if you pay attention and take notes, you're good. So far, I've gotten Bs on both exams. This is because I don't read the textbook. Read it and you're good, and don't forget to study. He's a nice guy and very funny.
This professor provokes so much anger in me so early in the morning. He cuts students off mid sentence while they are speaking. Absolutely 0 homework assignments. Assigns an unnecessarily long chapter a week, and tests are based on these chapters. He does not post notes anywhere. Is extremely rude & condescending.
He's not terrible but the class is very reading and lecture heavy. You HAVE to study for the 3 exams he gives. 20 multiple choice and 3 short answers for every test. A lot for a 100 class, and the short answers are always pretty difficult. Before the exams you just have to pray that you'll do well.
Literally the worst professor I've ever had
Overall difficult class that required way too many readings as a college student with five other classes. There simply is not enough hours in the week to read every single essay and book on the syllabus. He grades difficult and requires a lot of writing with essay assignments and 3 essays on each test. Don't miss a lecture ever lol.
a see you next tuesday. so glad i never have to see this man again
Just don't take the class, trust.
To start off with, he bases some assignments off finding quotes from HIS 65 DOLLAR BOOK. Very unorganized D2L page, very biased lectures. However, he does lecture well and makes it good for note taking. However, just save yourself and find a new prof.
your grade in the class only relies on 3 exams and attendance thats all
He does not answer emails, his class is based off of 3 exams, the homework is a lot of reading, but there are no points for homework. You need to know 5 weeks worth of content for each exam. All exams are in person on paper and there is an essay component to each exam. This class does not feel like a 100 class at all. You were warned
Do yourself a favor and run. I mean run your way to your advisor and get out of this class. This prof is awful. Do not miss lectures. Do the readings and say a prayer you pass the tests, because if you don't you're screwed. There's no homework or extra credit. Three exams and attendance makes up your grade. Awful. Just get out of this class. FR.
Make sure to take good notes during the lectures and don't miss a class. The readings take a lot of time but read them and take notes. The tests are hard, but if you study all the vocab and exactly what is on the study guide he provides, it isn't that bad. You just need to study and take notes. It wasn't as bad as everyone says though.
Professor doesn't bother to introduce himself or could care less if you went out of your way to acknowledge him. Class is only graded on 3 exams and attendance. You will fall behind if you miss even one lecture. The readings he assigns is excessive. Only take this class if you're required to. Don't waste your time by emailing him, he won't answer.
This was the worst class I have taken. He cannot teach so drop the class earlier rather than later. he only uses a whiteboard so if you miss a class, you miss all the notes because nothing is posted on d2l. he doesn't post grades. Also, all the grades come from 3 exams.
RUN. He can not teach, & ends up rambling on random topics. Only 3 exams and attendance is 10% of your grade so don't miss a class...even if you are sick. He was sick for about 3 weeks coughing on the poor front row of students and germs ALL over the white board. Since he doesn't use any tech, not even to post grades. Need to be good at note taking
Do not take this class unless necessary. Three heavy exams and 6 essay assignments and that's all that is graded besides attendance. Lectures hard to follow, cannot read handwriting half of the time, and is completely on a white board. No study guides the only guidance for knowing what's on the tests are the load of readings in syllabus…
Old-school type of professor: Doesn't use much D2L, but has clear grading guidelines. You do need to read a lot though, a lot more than a typical 100 level class. Overall, a decent professor who knows what's he talking about.
He isn't as bad as most people make him out to be. He is a nice guy, kinda quirky. Most of the important material is emphasized in lecture. Lectures do drag a bit, but just show up, pay attention, and take notes. Lots of assigned reading. I find it helpful to do but people get by without it.
Please, whatever you do, do NOT take his class. He expects you to memorize multiple chapters from 3 different textbooks for each exam. Don't even think about emailing him because he won't answer. He also won't upload any of your exam grades online, so you won't know your overall grade. Honestly, the best thing you could do for yourself is run.
There are a lot of assigned readings and you will need to take notes during lectures. I was able to understand the material he taught in class and he was a good professor, but the class workload is just a lot. The tests are a broad overview of all of the readings and lectures with multiple choice.
There aren't a lot of opportunities to lift your grade. He lectures the whole class and then assigns an insane amount of reading. Be warned that material from the THREE books will be on the tests (which are multiple choice), not just lecture material. He is very strict on no phones. Grades aren't posted, need to keep a manual log of your grades.
Tough paper exams. Expects you to keep up with readings that are only listed in the syllabus and not discussed in class to not fall behind. Grades assignments out of 5, and is a harsh grader. So much reading, and there's no clear communication from him. Leaves no feedback and doesn't respond to emails. Honestly seems like he enjoys failing students
Everyone that I know in my class got a C or below. Your grade is based on attendance, a few short essays, and tests. He sometimes gives study guides, but they don't help at all with the tests. The tests are so hard no matter how much you study. Also, the lectures are so hard to follow and there is barely anything from the lectures on the test.
Run! Handwriting is hard to read, and the lectures can be hard to understand. Says that his class is the "most difficult soc 100".Says that if you bother him enough he will make a study guide, then that he doesn't feel the need to make one when asked about it. He phrases things in a confusing way on tests and most people I know only get F, D or C.
I do NOT recommend one bit, horrible hand writing, lectures aren't on test, stutters A LOT, tries to be funny in class very corny, just RUN if you have him on your first semester schedule drop him and get a different sociology professor!!!
People make him seem like a bad professor but he's not AT ALL. He loves what he does and you can tell, and because of that lectures fly by. You have to do 3 very short assignments throughout the year, three tests, and show up to class, it's really not asking much. The tests are 95% focused on what you did in lecture and 5% not so just show up.
he is not a bad teacher, i find that his lectures make sense and fly by. however, he assigns so much reading and from multiple different books. it is hard to know how to study for his tests because it is just so much. it is so easy to miss a question since they are mc and worth 3 points, one wrong question drops ur grade a lot.
Made an account just for this review. I had straight A's in my last 14 courses, this was my only B. Getting this B was harder than getting an A on any of my other courses. At a 100 level course he makes it as hard as possible. 3 textbooks and hundreds of pages worth of information that make up 50% of the test that aren't mentioned in any lecture.
