Very cool prof. helps w/ most any problems if you visit him @ his office. Really funny. Sideburns look AWESOME.
Great professor! Take this class with him! You will do just fine as long as you try! AwEsOmE sideburns!
Great professor! Very clear and his tests aren't that bad. He'll help you if you go and talk to him. He'll usually cut you a break.
Hes a great teacher and really easy. You dont have to go to class and all the notes are on the internet. The final was straight off the old tests that he gives back corrected!
He's very clear. Makes class almost interesting! All his notes are online so if you miss a class you can easily catch up. Great Class
class is really interesting. gives quizes to help you know what to study for the tests. tests aren't that bad and final comes straight from old tests. explains things in ways so you can relate and understand. very clear...awesome professor. take his class if you can!
Great teacher!
Great teacher! Will explain and give realistic examples. He knows what he is talking about! Attend in class is a must. Questions from lecture AND book. Made psychology interesting!
Great teacher, gives you his powerpoint, an understanding teacher, gives 2pt bonus on final grade if your there everytime he takes attendance, very funny, pay attention and you'll do fine...
Great Teacher! Definately my favorite teacher so far in college. Really down to earth and easy to pay attention too. He doesn't bore you to death and hes very helpful if you don't understand something.
chops are totally back in style! great teacher.
Will you marry me? :). Smart, funny, enthusiastic. Great 100 level class.
first he bugged the !@#$ out of me, then he grew on me. he knows a lot and is really interested in... everything, it would seem. Good class if you have to take psych. tests are fair, final is a giveaway.
easy class. study the notes and get a's on the quizzes. everything is mc and scantron. final is cummulative on all the tests but it takes a little time to study for but it's an easy a. read the book...study the notes he gives and it will be a very easy a. he's not out to get you.
Lothes is relatively easy but his class is extremely boring. You don't always have to go to class, but there's a reward for perfect attendance. There's no homework, besides studying for tests and quizzes. He's not very organized so keep all of your quizzes and tests.
Really good teacher. Fair, interesting, tells good stories, ect. He's very understanding and reasonable. As far as the material goes it's not hard, I didn't even open the book, should be fine if you study the powerpoint notes. Final is a giveaway and you are nicely rewarded for perfect attendance!
Lothes is EXTREMELY helpful... He will not continue onto the next topic until everyone understands- Uses examples in class to explain.. tests are OK, but if you study really hard you can get 100%.
Mr Lothes is a really cool guy! I had him for both psy 105 and 223 and both classes he was extremely helpful. If you go and meet with him during office hours and let him know you are trying he will definetly help you. He only takes attendance a few times throughout the semester. If you need to take Psy i totally recommend him.
Mr. Lothes was an extremely nice teacher. His class was easy and interesting. I would definitely take his class!
great.
Took PSY 418 and it was horrible. DO NOT Take this class. He just reads his powerpoints and post them online. He also post the notes online but takes attendence in class every class! SOOOOO boring
Overall a great teacher. Pretty easy class, I never bought the book and passed with a B. He always has stories to relate to the topic. Kinda good looking in a different way. Fun guy.
Really cool guy! Tests are kinda hard but he does post his powerpoints online and gives extra credit for attendance. You have to do a 40 minute presentation with a partner and a 5-9 page research paper so it's pretty time consuming but that's college for you. He makes the material pretty interesting by using real life examples. I'd take him again!
He's a cool guy, but I didn't find his teaching to match his tests. Every class is the same, with him reading the powerpoints to the class and an occasional discussion. But when it comes test time, you better have read the chapters over and over and over. The C I got in this class kept me from making the dean's list.
I just got this vibe from him sometimes that he was a really busy guy and he'd rather have been somewhere else instead of teaching. Could be wrong. Get the book and read the end of chapter reviews for the test. Lots of questions from there--it'll save your butt.
Amazing. Great teacher, funny, keeps the class interested. If you study the powerpoints and go to class you'll do well. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
This guy's a trip. I don't think you should buy your textbook. Go to class, read the notes, and you'll be fine. Big class. There are quizzes after every chapter, four tests, and a final. I'd take another class from him if it was my major.
not a bad class he just reads off of powerpoints the whole time- there's 4 tests and 1 WAY easy final
Lothes is awesome he just reads right off the slideshows he gives you just study them for the test and you will be fine
Great professor, tests are not hard at all if you study. Getting LESS then 95 on final is pretty hard.Interesting class and cool professor!recommend him ;)
I'm in love with John Lothes. Not really but I did love him as a professor. He is easy to listen to and reads right from the slides. He takes random attendance but going to class isnt a big deal, he puts all the powerpoints online. Will definitely be taking one of his classes again.
He is awesome! Definitely a great professor. 4 test through the semester and a comprehensive final. Gives you back every test(consists of 50 multiple choice questions) and the final exam is STRAIGHT from the old tests! he is AWESOME!
Lothes is awesome. Took him for 223 and loved the class. Highly recommended if you need an easy A and like phychology.
I found this class to be pretty easy, as long as you pay attention to the powerpoints and go over them before the tests. Go to class because occasionally he'll give hints as to what the essay questions will be on the exams. Oh and Lothes is pretty hot in my opinion, he has a tattoo on his upper back if you're ever lucky enough to see it :)
Quizzes after each chapter. 10 multiple choice (really easy if you pay attention in class and review powerpoint). Tests after 3 chapters. 40 multiple choice 10 T/F. (again, easy if you pay attention). All the answers come straight from the powerpoints. No need for a book unless you can't learn from powerpoints.
Go to class and you'll make an A. Lothes is cool and kinda hot. Take his class!
Mr.Lothes is awesome. The tests are challenging but you can expect at least a B if you go to class and do required experiments (which as a piece of cake). I'm a psych major so i'm biased but I thought the class was ridiculously interesting.
Good quality professor that pretty much just lectures from the Power Points he has in class. If you attend class, there is no reason you shouldn't be able to get a solid B in the class. The final is a cumulative of all 4 exams you take during the semester. He gives you back your exams to study so it should be an easy A.
Self Defense is a fun class where you learn some cool techniques than can rip and destroy people but its more for you to get away than win a fight. He shows us the technique and than we have applying it on our partner but being careful not to destroy them with it. which means applying it with grandma strength. PE is easy class just do work and A.
Awesome, he makes you want to go to class, the tests are alright just have to pay attention in class there are 10 question quizzes for each chapter and 4 tests, he gives you the tests back and those exact tests are what make up your final exam.
Lothes is the best! He is super laid back and fun. Easy to talk to & likes to joke. Tests are easy as long as you read the powerpoints he posts. He is also a therapist so he has really cool stories to go with everything he teaches. Take him! Easy A class and you will learn a lot!
Such a good professor and guy. All test are relatively easy and final is the same questions you have seen. Study and you have an A!
Mr.Lothes is AWESOME. He makes funny comments and makes you actually want to come to class!!! Plus he is super helpful and actually realizes how to link psych to the students life. HE IS GREAT!!
He is such an amazing teacher. The course material is covered in a way that is interesting and extremely funny. He has such an amazing sense of humor! Also, his tests and quizzes are very similar to the PowerPoint's so they're not tough at all!
Mr. Lothes is my favorite professor at UNCW. He's funny, helpful, and knowledgeable. He keeps class interesting, and the exams are easy if you study the powerpoints and go to class. The final is all old test questions word-for-word from his other exams. I have never skipped his class just because it's so interesting and entertaining.
Mr. Lothes is the best teacher I have had at UNCW and is one of the best teachers I've ever had.The funny thing about college is that you don't really HAVE to go to class, but in Lothes' class everyone WANTS to be there. (pronounced Lotus) Also, he is quite attractive. On top of all of that he is one of the funniest guys ever. MUST TAKE HIS CLASS
Professor Lothes was an awesome professor! He did read off the PowerPoints but as long as you listen and study the PowerPoints you will do fine! His final is from all previous exams.
Mr. Lothes is a very chill instructor. Tests easy and the final exam comes from the same questions from the tests. Brings a lot of real world experience and knowledge into the course. An easy A
I loved this class and Lothes is such an awesome professor. I would take another one of his classes in a heartbeat. He makes class interesting and I never skipped class because I really enjoyed going. Definitely recommend this professor.
Very interesting class. the final is all of the old tests which was awesome. i would take another one of his classes.
He's an awesome teacher. The class is very easy and informative. Lothes seems to really love his job and makes the classes more enjoyable. Tests are very easy, just read over the notes before the test and you will do fine. A lot of the info is common sense. Also the pysch study hours you have to do are very easy and nothing to sweat.
TAKE HIM! I had him for self-defense and I LOVED it! He knows his stuff and can put anyone on the ground in a second. I came out of the class feeling prepared for anything. He is so down to earth and you can ask him anything. I would most definitely take another class under him.
So long as you show up to class and take notes you're fine. Tests are all off lecture and the only grades are from tests, but if you pay attention and show up you're fine. He works to explain everything and break it down which makes the material easy to understand.
John is awesome! I took Aikidoself-defense with him and this class was a blast. You actually learn a lot, and it's just a super fun class. Definitely an easy A. Final exam is online, super easy. John makes his class really interesting and entertaining. I loved it. He is really sweet and nice, always willing to help and just talk. :)
John is awesome! He is really funny and super helpful when you go to see him to go over quiz and test material. He relates topics to real life situations he has gone through as well as his patiences. There are quizzes after every chapter but as long as you look over his power points and go to class you'll be fine. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Goes over the material very well and relates real-world scenarios to topics which makes it easy to understand. Uploads all of his power points and they are all you need to study from for tests and quizzes. Also lets you have computers out during class.
Lothes is the man!! He relates everything he says to real life examples so it's easier to understand. He says to get the textbook, but really all of the test material comes off of his slides and he puts them online. He rarely takes attendance but when he does there are benefits. He's super interesting. I highly reccommend.
Professor Lothes makes lectures very interesting. I look forward to going to class! There are quizzes after every chapter that make you keep up with the material (I personally find this helpful). Reading the book isn't necessary but definitely helps.
Mr. Lothes was one of the best teachers I've ever had! He's hilarious, is passionate about the subject, and is very clear with what he expects. No complaints, just study for tests and you'll be fine!
I loved his class. He doesn't take attendance, but listening to him makes concepts much easier to comprehend and much more interesting. He is very straightforward and goes by the textbook. Read and understand the chapters (which are relatively short) and you'll be more than prepared for the tests.
Lothes is AMAZING!!! He has made Psychology so much fun to learn. He uses real life examples that really help you to understand the material. Most people didn't use the textbook and made B's and C's but I found that reading gave me an easy 98 on all of his exams so I highly recommend it.
Dr. Lothes is a great professor, and makes the class relatively easy. He understands that it is an Intro. class, so he keeps the material fairly broad. He took attendance very few times, and gave out quizzes after every chapter. Class typically ended 15-30 mins. early most days. For our final, he took past questions from past exams, verbatim.
This class is difficult but also very interesting. You are graded by 4 exams and a research paper. The work load is very manageable and it is very clear how you will be graded. I would highly recommend taking this professor. He is very knowledgeable and makes the lectures interesting. Attendance is not mandatory but highly recommended.
Mr. Lothes is a really interesting guy and is incredibly intelligent. I have taken PSY 105 and PSY 247 with him and have not regretted it at all. PSY 247 is definitely a difficult class but his lectures are always extremely interesting. I would recommend taking his class.
Mr. Lothes is hilarious. Abnormal was really interesting with him, since he is a clinician with real world examples. I never opened the book and ended up with an A, but he does put some questions on the exams that are only from the book. Attendance is not technically mandatory, but your participation grade depends on attendance.
After taking Lothes for 105 I decided to take him again for 247 and was not disappointed. His exams come straight from the powerpoints and textbook, and the final was questions pulled from the past exams, so don't throw them away! He gives really good examples and obviously knows what he's talking about.
I'm in his Aikido class at the moment and I love it! He is such a great teacher. He also an extremely nice person who cares a lot about his students. Take him!
He is a great teacher the only bad thing is top hat, it is unnecessary, for the type of class, but is required.
Lothes is a great professor who makes everything very clear within Blackboard. He has detailed descriptions of what to do for each module and the rest is up to you. Highly recommend!!
I had Dr. Lothes for self defense last semester and he was amazing! Super down to earth person! Highly recommend!
Brazilian Jujitsu is a really fun course, very very basic techniques such as shrimping and falls. Lots of work on the ground in the guard(in between your legs) so find a partner that is the opposite gender if possible. Still a fun class even if you are already trained in another discipline but you may get bored as lothes (pronounced "lotus") says.
His class is very chill and he will work with you if you need help. Good and fun exercise.
I liked Lothes throughout the semester... hes a really interesting guy. I just do not like how he runs his class. All you get graded on is exams and quizzes. The exams are worded weird and harder to take than I was expecting. I ended up getting a B in his class and that ruined my GPA for nursing school. He doesnt not do B- or B +. Just A B C D.
Not very nice or helpful. Its an online class but he was rude and unhelpful when we had technology issues. Easy grader and do your work but not a nice person.
Professor Lothes is the most witty, inspiring professor Ive had at uncw. He has a background in clinical psychology, making the class that much more interesting due to his relatability. His lectures are super intriguing bc he gives prevalent examples relating to his profession. He is hilarious and so fair. A few short essays, 2 tests, & final
Class was a complete joke, his modules were filled with unecessary assignments and taught me absolutely nothing. Not to mention i never saw him one time. Not helpful at all when you email him so dont even try, if you even get a response he will give you no help. Do not take his course, if you do, im so sorry.
The tests and quizzes were kinda hard if you don't pay attention or do the readings, so don't totally zone out during the lectures unless you're super confident. Attendance wasn't really mandatory, but he would randomly have a sign in sheet and would take credit from that. Overall a good teacher though and there was always extra credit on the tests
I took Aikido with John and he is a wonder. He is very conforming to everybody's comfort and cares about his students. His class is slow and easy; a PE class that you will not leave you sweaty. Whether you have prior experience or not, he can teach anybody. Definitely take Mr. Lothes if you have the chance!
I took BJJ online and the workouts were online, sometimes repetitive but you get a good sweat in. I still don't know how to use any moves I learned. The lecture and lab parts of this class are incredibly easy. This class is a walk in the park. Seems like a really chill, nice guy.
Dr. Lothes is a great professor and a really easy grader. The reading he gives is really long and very hard to do at times, but easy to understand (just a lot). The tests are kind of hard but he gives you a lot of time to do everything. The projects are easy. Do the reading and youll be good!
The majority of content learned in this class was assigned straight from the textbook. The course is very reading heavy, but Dr. Lothes provides lots of opportunities for discussion in order to really comprehend the content. He also encourages questions and answers student emails really fast.
Took for asynchronous WPA101 and it was very easy. He's a very easy grader and communicates what assignments are due often.
Great Instructor. Very personable and really explains and demonstrates material well. Far superior to any other WPA instructor.
Dr. Lothes is an amazing professor. I took his Aikido class and it was amazing. You learn a lot and get a decent work out. As long as you do your work on time and don't skip class, its an easy A. He says a lot " one word answers are one word grades". You don't have to go super in depth but you do have to do your work. I would so take him again.
I have nothing but amazing things to say about this man, took his self-defense class and I loved every second of it. He also was my online instructor and grades really easily. TAKE HIS CLASS
Hes a great guy just too much work for this course but it is doable tophat questions 50+ every week along with tophat discussions. Canvas discussion board + 3 replies every week A therapist interview in person 3 reflection papers, a "white paper" and quizzes Just seems like he doesn't know what assignments he wants so he does every possible thing.
Dr. Lothes was so cool and I genuinely loved his class. He's super funny and he relates the material to his life as a clinical psychologist as well. I wish he had a higher-level class I could take with him because I liked his teaching so much! Some say that it's a bit of work but none of the work was unnecessary in my opinion.
Professor Lothes is very helpful to the student who asks questions in class. Make sure you're participating, and you'll be fine.
Professor Lothes was awesome and funny. He has cool stories and you can tell he really wants everyone to participate and learn. Reccomend his class, you learn a lot and its easy!
Took BJJ, learned a lot cool teacher just show up don't be lazy and you'll get a good grade
He is a great professor. He really knows what he is talking about. I love how he posts all content at the beginning of the semester so you can work ahead a bit. The only thing is he gives a lot of homework, and no extra credit or makeup work. If you miss something, its an automatic 0. He is a bit of a tough grader.
BJJ is cool with him. It was different than BJJ I studied previously but he's willing to work with you. The Tophat stuff is really annoying though. If you miss even one of them he won't reopen it, and it'll tank your grade severely since you don't get graded on anything you do in class, it's all online work, which I didn't like. He's very laid back
I had Dr. Lothes for WPAL101 Aikido as well as online. In person, Dr. Lothes is a funny guy he will help you with the techniques in aikido and always stressed doing things at your own comfort level. Online wise, he wasn't necessarily strict at grading, just don't put in minimal effort and submit things on time. Easy A and easy credit.
I took Professor Lothes as my online side of WPA 101, and he was awesome. He was an easy grader, provided feedback for grades, and offered an info session at the beginning of the semester for anyone trying to understand the class. There are small weekly quizzes, but mostly just discussion posts. I would recommend him :)
Great use of specific examples/personal stories, lets other share experiences as well.
THE BEST! So cares about his students and knows his stuff. Coming to class matters but as long as you participate you should be fine, very easy and fun.
Very easy grader and was always available by email to help you understand the assignments. It's an online class so it is not hard at all. Assignments are due every Monday night and do not take very long to complete. Good professor.
Great professor for WPAL, I had him for "couch to 5k". He made a potentially bad class great. As long as you show up and follow the schedule for the day and don't goof off, you will get a 100. He is very understanding when it comes to injury / illness and will never make you do something you can't, but will push you to do your best.
Professor Lothes was great! I had him for both WPA and WPAL. He makes it very clear what you need to get done and by when. If you do your work and show up for lab, you will be successful. He is a nice guy as well. Very understanding and easy to talk to.
He is such a king. His second job is being a psychologist, so he knows exactly what he is talking about. Tests are super easy and it might seem like a lot of work to do in one week but it is not. My friend was having anxiety about a topic we talked about in class and he made sure she was okay and took time out of his day to talk to her.
I had him for WPA 101 Online and he seemed very chill and I wasn't really worried about anything with the class--nothing popped up or came as a suprise. He had a lot of students though so email interactions have to be specific. He always sent out emailed that outlined everything we needed to do. Great guy overall and I recommend him.
Professor Lothes is a great online WPA professor! He always sends emails reminding students of the work that is due, and explaining how to complete the modules. He's very nice and understanding. Definitely take him for your WPA!
Such a great professor. Gives great lectures. He is a therapist and always relates the material to real-world experiences. Easy workload and non-mandatory attendance. I would take this class again for the fun of it. Take his class!!!!
I had Mr. Lothes for WPAL 101 (Aikido) and he is a hilarious and caring professor. There are reading assignments and questions but nothing you can't do in an hour. He emails the entire class to remind us of upcoming due dates at least three times a week. I would totally take this class again with him!
great teacher
He is very knowledgeable! This class has a lot of assignments, but they're manageable. The only big assignments are two online exams and three short reflection papers. It is very easy to get an A if you put in the time. His lectures can be a little overwhelming at times, so I recommend simply listening and paying attention rather than taking notes.
I think he is genuinely the best professor I have ever had. He is so incredibly knowledgable and truly cares about his students. He made his lectures extremely interesting and made sure all the students were engaged. He has inspired me to continue my major in psychology when I was on the fence about it.
He is honestly so engaging and entertaining, he captivates the students and speaks so passionately about the material. He is very funny and he makes sense, he talks swiftly so you don't get bored, and he relates material to outside examples which makes it easier to understand. He is very laid back, and he gives funcle vibes. Great, GREAT professor.
This is a good professor. Tough on deadlines however, you get one "WOOP" (make-up assignment) to use per semester no matter why you missed the assignment. Overall finished with an A. I highly recommend.
This class is dog easy. Take him if you want an easy A for WPA. His grading criteria is very straight forward, and as long as you follow what he's looking for in the assignments and turn them in on time (he is not very nice with late work unfortunately), you're pretty much guaranteed an A.
- super easy class - he's very passionate - use tophat which is like $70 so that sucks - Quizlet will be your best friend - tests are open note and open tophat - pretty interesting content - couple of reflection papers (2-4 page double spaced) - weekly discussion boards are lowk annoying but just set a reminder to do them
attendance was mandatory but he gave up to 6 absences, tests were open notes, would reccomend
