A real know-it-all
Could have been clearer, short on feedback. It would have been nice to hear if you were on track or off track of the subject matter, especially since it is on-line. When he rarely gave comments it seemed unclear and made to feel dumb if you had to ask.
Online class took less than an hour a week, had time to look up all the answers for the tests online. Easy class and I am taking another one from him.
A little monotonous though brings up interesting discussion questions. The course load is light and the exams are easy
If you are looking for an easy A, take one of his online courses. Little time and effort required, but you will learn some interesting things.
pretty easy class. boring at times. talked about his cats a lot.
Mt Ludes is so hot I could hardy concentrate in class. I have no idea what he was talking about in class because all I could think about was how hot he was.I would take his class again just to watch him flip his hair behind his ear. And those lips........
damn. he so cute. sigh. one of the reasons i go there ever class sessions! haha.
This guy is COOL. A easy class and the professor ROCKS! Doesn't really give a damn about stuff, and makes execuses when late to class.
I LOVED hearing about the cats!!!! Wish he would talk more. What's up with da bump lately anyway (that cat is PHAT and FAT). Glad U got the Roomba for all that fur. Later.
I wish all UNLV teachers were like him. I learned so much in his class. He's an example of what a teacher should be. I learned to enjoy Philosophy through him. I recomend the class to anyone.
Cool online class. Easy A if you do the work. Tests are based on applying concepts so as long as you know how to apply what you read you should be good. Only 50% of class is based on tests which gives room to improve grades if you should bomb one.
he like to do things with animals and finds nothing wrong with it. otherwise its a great class!!

Great teacher. Pretty easy class. I'm taking his 102 class this summer just because i liked his 101 so much.
Online course is not really recommended, but if you take the chance and do the work, you will most likely end up with a B and a bruised ego. 2nd exam is basically the 1st exam all over again. Concepts are at times confusing so make sure you have him clarify what he wants other wise when it comes to tests you are out of luck.
He is an OKAY professor. He gives quizzes every week that you do online, they are hard but at least you can use your book. The final paper is easy as long as you do your research and don't BS your way through it. Plus he's a cutie.
His online class over the summer is really NOT recommended. He gives so many assignments over a 5 weeks session, enough to make your summer miserable. Also, there is no way for students to keep track on their current grade. You have no idea whether or not you flunk the class until the class is over.
I split my day up with 1 class in the morning and this class in the evening JUST because I read some good reviews on this site. Well, now I'm stuck in a class that I really wanted to take at first but I am dreading each day & I have a split day. SUPER confusing and I don't understand anything he is trying to teach. Super moody and unprofessional.
Summer session classes are always intense, and this was no exception. There was a lot of material to cover, and a limited time to cover it. John's personality carried the class; his easiness in his teaching style made every class exciting and interesting -- I just wish we had a more structured grading system. I give Ludes a "check plus!"
Very difficult to know what your grade is until the end of the class. A lot of confusion in the and not well organized going into the final paper. Not a helpful instructor and talked down to the class at times. Not a lot of feedback and very cookie-cutter format. I took the on-line course and it was the worst on-line course I have had yet.
He's a cool guy! He could totally model for Versace. And he sort of looks like Keanu Reeves!! The class is fun if there are people who speak their mind.
he doesnt look like keaanu reeves but he's hot for a professor..lectures are interesting and he's intelligent...i recommend his class
Interesting class. Not really the subject, but just watching him teach is pretty funny. Esp. if you have dumb blondes in the class - he'll tell it like it is. Awesome.
It was a couple of years ago that I had him, but I thought he was a pretty amazing professor :-)
Simply great! I enjoyed his class very very much! great work flow, great discussions, and great personality... if you plan on taking PHI 101... get Ludes!
Unfortunatly, being blonde has nothing to do with his class so the brunette and red head haters should probably get a clue before they leave such a FRESHMAN remark. He, on the other hand is a very good prof.
i have to say I loved his class. and it's true he can tell who is dumb and who is dumber just by looking at them. he is very smart but kind. I like him not only becuase he is cute but becuase he is really good at what he can be. becareful of what you say to him, he is a philosopher.
Took his class over the summer. I very much enjoyed the discussions, I'm a natural philosopher. However, I think he is fairly moody and not very patient with some issues. Other than that, he is a pretty good teacher and pretty laid back most of the time.

Dont take him!!!!!! He thinks that he is god gift. Not all that cute
I don't know what everybody else is talking about, ya he has an attendance policy but as long as you go and show some effort, it's so easy! His class was fun because he lets us debate against one another so we can understand the concepts better & he gives us an outline of what to study before the tests. Very helpful and very easy!
hE IS PRETTY COOL. I NEVER EXPRERIENCED THE NEGATIVE STUFF OTHERS SAID. HE DOES HAVE ATTENDANCE POLICY, BUT ITS HELPFUL TO SHOW UP BECAUSRE SOME OF THE FINAL IS FROM CLASS DISCUSSION. VERY HOTT!!!
I thought I was going to dread this class, but now I am thinking about taking 102 because of him. He is very insightful. At times he does make certain students feel dumb, but I don't think he does it on purpose. Read for his class and do participate. Enjoy philosophy!
READ THE BOOK!!! There are three small books to read over the semester. The first two are easy to understand as long as you read it, the third is next to impossible. He is a good teacher i just don't like the subject. The reading assignments are easy and he's an easy grader, but ONLY on that. The midterm and final are each worth 30%!!!! soSTUDYHARD
I took this course as an online class & boy do I regret it! The material we weekly discussed was very vague & no where close to the questions he asked on the tests. He wouldn't respond back to our questions for almost 2weeks at hand, and never really TAUGHT the material! I've had friends that took him "in class" & said the same comments.
DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS!!! It sucks! Everyone from this website said it was a piece of cake online class. No it is not. The average for the final in my class was a 62!!! He doesn't update you with what you're current grade is so you're not sure how many points you are earning on your weekly discussions. It's a worthless class.
Grade is based on 2 tests, five page paper, and attendance. First test was a killer, but he added points to it if you showed significant improvement on the final, which was much easier. He focuses more on applications and thought experiments, not famous philosophers and their specific theories. Posts notes on webcampus, fun class, would recommend!
This professor is not very difficult. The online class has 4 discussions and 1 quiz each week. There are 2 papers and 2 exams. Discussions were often late and unless Webcampus did the grading for him he waits till the last minute. Use the books on the test and you will be fine, but don't expect to get your grades until the last day possible.
Professor for online courses. He assignes 4 discussions a week, along with a quiz and a lot of reading every week, and exams and papers. He assignes a lot of useless work and does not grade all of it, and what is graded is done very harshly. He does not like being emailed or respond to what he feels is useless mail. Highly do not recommend him.
ONLINE: I wouldn't really recommenced his online class. You have 4 weekly discussions and he only grades 12 of them during the whole semester. He never gives you feedback on your postings, so you don't know if what your doing is right. Doesn't answer some e-mails. Tests/quizzes are easy if you do the readings. Easy A/B, but you don't learn much
I took his class online, and It turned out to be -VERY difficult, he gave quizes every week 10 question ones those where pretty easy, and he does this Stupid open and close post thing, and its kind of a lot for AN ONLINE CLASS,I also took it in the Fall, he was also not very useful when I asked for help he could never really meet. TEST HARD!!!
This guy is totally rude and its an online class! You email him for help or advice and he disrespects you. He isn't clear on anything and he thinks he is the best person in the world. DONT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Do not take him if you can avoid it. His class is confusing. He was not at all helpful, he emailed me back only half of the time I sent emails. You have no idea what he will grade and what he wont. So work that I did well on was never graded and things I messed up on were. Way too much work for a 101 class. He really isn't interested in teaching.
This is the second distance ed course I took from Professor Ludes and they were great. Maybe some students were hoping for an easy A and didn't get it! If read and do the assignments which isn't too much work you will do well. The class was fun and the professor was very helpful and answered my questions right away. I'd take him again for sure.
This professor is totally useless. If you take his class, you will be sorry. His grading methods are ridiculous. I took this class online, the worst. You can end up with no credit for discussion posts (4 per week) if you post wrong ONE TIME! Also, don't try emailing him cause he won't answer your questions. He'll just be condescending.
He's not the sort of professor I find helpful. He hardly answers any questions and seems aloof.
You can pretty much forget getting a 4.0 in his class. He has a ridiculous sense of formality when you need to contact him with a question. Every email must have a proper heading, paragraph structure, and closure, as though you were writing a letter to an elected official. His grading fairly arbitrary.
Fair class, final was awful. Lets you work ahead, midterm wasn't too bad. Weekly posts x 4 per week and weekly quizzes. Critical Analysis paper was challenging to critique another student's post with research reference points. Fair class, got a C and I participated, kind of sucked!
Very hard to contact, extremely vague questions on quizes, which the answer can be right both ways, he just chooses one of those ways, so you don't know if you're getting the "answer" right. Forget about getting an A in this class. I worked very hard and ended up with a C+.
I had to take this class online and at first I was a little nervous but the class is actually really good. As long as you keep up with the discussion posts, readings and understand concepts you should be fine. Every time I sent an e-mail asking a question he responded rather quickly and helped me out. Quiz questions could be a little vague.
Online Class. He was rarely available, never interacted with the class and was basically an absentee professor this whole semester. If you want to have a real dialogue with your teacher/classmates take someone else.
Class was overall easy. I took it online. Prof wasn't around to interact, he just left it up to us. Questions were always answered. Quiz questions were VERY vague, to the point of frustration.
overall i got the average of final is 75, but i think the quiz and final exam are very tough. but discussion and the five pages paper are ok. not too hard. if you work hard to read the book and you might do well on it.
Took as an online class! He answered all emails in with a good turnaround time. He only grades posts 2 times during the semester and did not put the grades up for the one assignment/discussions until last week. Quiz questions are very vague, worked my butt off to receive an A-, but took over summer. Good Luck!
I can't really complain because it's exactly what an online class should be. Just read the book, post, and answer quizzes. Some of the answers are unfairly vague. The professor isn't very reliable so you're on your own, but again that's pretty much what it should be.
Terrible professor! I took his phil 101 online class over the summer and it was awful. His quiz and final questions are so vague that the answer could go either way-- yet he picks only one way so you get them wrong. He doesn't post lectures and doesn't give any sort of feedback. Avoid this professor if you can.
This class is set up terribly, the schedule is confusing and there are multiple times per week that assignments are due. It took me almost the entire semester to get used to the schedule. There are a lot of discussions and responses and the quizzes aren't too bad. Reading the book and listening to all podcasts really helps with the quiz questions.
So much homework and reading. In my opinion, it is far too much for an online class, and a 101 at that. I have taken my fair share of online classes and some upper division and have had not had to do 28 discussions, 56 responses, 12 quizzes, a midterm, a final, and a paper on top of weekly reading & podcasts from 3 books.
28 discussion posts, 56 responses, 13 quizzes, one paper, midterm, final, multiple readings and videos and podcasts, yet the teacher hardly ever interacts with students. Take notes on the readings and do supplemental research to do well. This feels like a class geared towards UD philosophy majors... not 101 students that are required to take it.
28 discussion posts, 56 responses, 13 quizzes, one 5 page paper due at the end, midterm, final, multiple readings and videos and podcasts. Overall not a bad class. Be prepared to work for your grade, you cannot just coast all semester.
Worst professor so far for an online class. 6 discussion posts per week. Weekly quizzes. Buyrentborrow the 3 textbooks! You are going to need it. Way too much work for a 101 class. He does not interact with his students at all. Critical analysis essay.
Too many discussions and he doesn't even grade them all. Really tough grader, takes points off for anything. Boring class, didn't learn much.
Gives weekly 10 point T/F quizzes. 2 weekly discussion posts, a midterm, final, and an 8-10 page essay. Straightforward.
The class was intimidating at the begging but, after few weeks, got easier and felt more confident to voice out my opinion on the class discussions. My favorite part was the flexible schedule to complete the assignments, second, web posting, third the integration of 3 books & pod cast as a learning tool. If you like to learn? take this class.
This online class was so difficult, stressful, and not structured well for a 101 class. There are no lectures, you only depend on the book. He barely gives any feedback and does not teach any material. There are no powerpoints, class notes, etc. You are responsible for learning on your own based on your book and whatever outside research you do.
Do not take this class unless you are ready to dedicate a great amount of time to it. Discussions are dreadful, the weekly quiz questions are very vauge and he is impossible to get in contact with.
Absolutely the worst professor you could ever take. He never responds to emails when I have sent multiple emails a week prior to when something was due & the content is hard with no lectures, power points or nothing. You have to rely off of 3 books. Quizzes/midterm are vague and hard, discussion posts are dreadful. I wish I had different professor.
I thought professor Ludes was great! There were 3 weekly discussions, a weekly quiz, final & a 5 page essay (summer class). The work is tough, yes, but not impossible as compared other PHIL professors. Responded back to emails the same day & does help you succeed if you reach out. His class was thought-provoking & informative. Would take him again!
Mr. Ludes did not grade assignments regularly, and I didnt know what my true grade was in the class until one week after finals. The gradebook wasnt updated, and very little attention was paid to students. I wouldnt recommend this professor. It was really frustrating to take his class, and the lack of care in grading is ridiculous.
Three books weekly assignments, 6 discussion posts/replies weekly for a total of 800 words MINIMUM, and usually a weekly test. Five page essay on someone else's discussion post due towards the end of the semester. This is completely insane for a 101 level class. I really enjoyed the material and it stimulated my thinking, but strict grading!
Yeah, if you want to suffer through an online summer class, take this one. Lots of reading, the quizzes suck, and the final isn't any better. I am a senior taking this class (I never took it) and it was more work than a 400 level course. His questions are very confusing and he doesn't grade until the end. Everything about this class totally sucked.
Requires 3 books, discussions and replies every week along with a quiz each week. A midterm, final and a paper based on someone elses discussion. He grades tough, the discussions he grades are random and takes off many points. There are no outlines, powerpoints, nothing except relying on the 3 books. Make sure to read them and take notes
I was 4 weeks behind in work and I emailed him explaining I had some personal issues going on and would take the late penalty. However, he barely penalized me for those late assignments when I did turn them all in! He's very understanding and willing to work with you if you just COMMUNICATE!
Not really a tough grader, but honestly there was quite a bit of work every week. 2 discussion posts and quiz/a week. Definitely had to sit down and set aside a few hours for hw every week. Books are needed! However, once you're in the groove of it honestly it's really not bad/hard work, just tedious. Don't be intimidated if this is ur only choice!
great teacher. class and expectations structured and clear. took him again this semester. like him even more the second time around. taking him again this summer.
So much busy work. Was intimidating at first, especially being an online class and a philosophy class! But once I got into the hang of things, the work was so easy and straightforward. You could get by without reading the book bc discussions were mainly opinion-based. But you did have to read certain parts of the book for some discussions though.
Responded within 24 hrs to all my emails, very nice professor and easy grader! Hi syllabus stresses that NO LATE work is ever accepted but I'm sure he does that bc it is an introductory college class and you tend to slack off your first couple years of college, trust me, we've all been there. You definitely have to put in the work for an A
A ton of busy work, but very easy and straightforward. There is 2 discussion posts, 4 peer response posts, a quiz every single week. Also a 5 page paper, midterm, and final. Sounds like a lot but its nearly all opinion-based and you can honestly bs/reword everything, it's easy I promise. Gotta put in the work though and do it!
I was super nervous about taking him at first cause all of the reviews, but if he is your only option it's not as bad as everyone says! Just a ton of busy work but super easy and you can totally bs it all. If you have hesitations, don't worry just take his class.
Good easy class but tons of busy work. Also, he did not attach any deadlines to anything so they did not appear in my main calendar on WebCampus. Thus, I did not know we had any work due for weeks cause it did not pop up in my calendar. So double check the syllabus and open the modules lol that was my fault on my end. Easy grader and lenient!
His syllabus says a strict NO LATE policy... but I posted my discussions about 4 weeks after they were due lol. He accepted them all and only docked off a single point. COMMUNICATE! My personal life became overwhelming and I just told him and he was lenient. If you are a freshman, you still submit that late work and own up to your slacking.
I admit his class has some parts that are pretty difficult. Lots of discussion boards, but other than that no other homework, just quizzes. The amount he asks for is technically fair even though many students seem to complain about it. Simply put, no you cannot bs this class. Put in some real effort, use your brain, and do most/all of the reading.
This guy is weird. First of all, he only posts the quizzes to the dashboard so you can't see anything else. 2 discussions a WEEK and he only randomly grades 6 of them??? Talk about busywork. The weekly quizzes aren't awful and I am getting an A, it's just a pain in the ass of a class. Also, cheap versions of the textbook are so hard to find.
Professor Ludes didn't really check up on anyone through the course. Did not meet on zooms, only had to do 2 discussion posts and 2 replies on each and do a weekly quiz. There is a big essay due, and he didn't remind anyone about this so be sure to keep that in mind. Overall fine, not a hard course and not a mediocre teacher.
lots of readinfs that can be confusing. prof is super nice and willing to help you out
Course was straight forward. There were two discussions every week followed by a quiz of the weeks lecture. So far, it was alright.
Taking several 300 & 400 level classes; this class takes up more time than they do. Quiz questions are vague and may be applicable to more than one answer. You are to complete 2 discussion posts each week, each with 2 responses. HE DOES NOT GRADE ALL OF THEM. He gives you the incorrect content to read leaving you confused! Does not leave feedback!
I HATED IT! This class is indeed a lot of busy work. Its not impossible to pass, but he made me wanna pull my hair and teeth out. 2 discussions and 4 responses each week and he doesnt grade them??? 3 expensive text books required, the least he could do was give us feedback, instead he comes the week of finals and starts handing out Cs. RUN!!!
Took this class for the Fall 2021 semester. It was completely online. There are about 30 Discussion boards that are mandatory, 2 per week over the course of the semester sometimes 1. Theres a midterm and a final. A critical analysis essay. If you do all the work according to the rubric youll pass with a high grade.
This was an easy class. It consists of quizzes, discussions, a critical analysis essay, a midterm, and final. You are required to read a lot but most questions are easy. My only concern is that the professor is not present at all. He literally has prewritten announcements that he sends out and they don't even match the semester he's talking about!
There are 2 discussions every week and have to do 2 replies for each discussion. I've been doing the discussions every week and he's graded like 2-3 of them so far. Be on top of it because he doesn't list his assignments to be on dashboard/calendar. Lots of reading, assignments consists of discussion and an essay. Easy enough class but no feedback.
Horrible, avoid at all costs! Ridiculous amount of work for a 100 class. You have to have 3 books. Weekly 2 discussions, with 2 replies to each, LOTS of textbook reading, NOT ONE LECTURE. Very lazy way of leading a class. Basically self taught with an extreme load of crap to do. Hated most of it. Such a shame too, this class had so much potential!
awful prof who doesn't even teach. you are essentially teaching yourself in this class. there are about 30+ discussion posts w/ 2 responses each that are graded AT RANDOM. literally wasting our time. he does not provide clear instructions or due dates. avoid this "prof" unless u enjoy paying for a class where YOU teach YOURSELF
John was a great professor his online class was structured very well and had clear criteria on what to complete and when. Overall it is a lot of work and reading, but it could be worse. Two discussion posts a week and one quiz per week as well. The topics were very interesting making the discussion fun to complete and making you wanna write.
John Ludes was an understanding professor that responded to emails fast and efficiently.
will need to get the book because it will be used. will need to participate in all discussion boards because of their importance. nice guy overall, very interesting topics. One easy paper to write by the course end, make it real don't make it complicated. get the book don't get the ebook, his pages and yours will be different. you'll have fun.
If you take PHIL-114 and you get this professor, start visiting tutoring immediately, as they'll probably be the only reason you pass. This professor does not post any lectures, the book is confusing & hard to read, & the lab's software is unintuitive & buggy. The midterms & quizzes that make up half of your grade, have no time limits.
2 discussions each week, 200+ words w 100+ responses. quizzes each week. hate philosophy but if you read the syllabus you'll be fine. he's not a hard grader if you read the rubrics and the readings you can get around not doing.
This is one of the worst professors I've ever taken. His grading material makes no sense. You get two discussions a week. He also NEVER grades the discussions. Ever. And nothing is graded until the last week of school. And after a while, you stop wanting to do them because he doesn't grade them. He also never responds to emails.
I had John Ludes for SNHU Into to Philosophy (PHL210). I really liked this professor. He gave great feedback and was very thought-provoking. This course has a lot of reading and writing, but I found it easy to write more than the required text due to the subject matter. He was responsive and engaging. I would definitely take a class from him again!
This online philosophy course has a solid structure, with weekly discussions and quizzes. The textbook is essential, and while the workload can be heavy, the interesting topics make it worthwhile. unstuckstudy proved helpful for organizing study materials.
The entirety of this course is dependent on you test grades so be prepared for that. However the professor can be accommodating if you explain your situation to him. The tests themselves are quite easy, and the discussion posts don't take long. Lots of reading and textbooks to read through though, so get ready to look for them or shell out a lot.
DONT TAKE only grades a quarter of the discussions posts (there's about 32 main ones with two responses for each) but it's at random so you have to do all of them. Also doesn't provide any specifics on rubrics, harsh grader, no feedback, and only grades things at the end of the semester so you can't dispute it. lazy and difficult for no reason
