Great Guy
He's a great teacher and he makes the class fun. Plus he's British so it's interesting to hear his point of view.
Great teacher, he made us laugh and put an interesting twist on things. Highly Recommended.
the best history teacher ever.
He makes class a little more enjoyable.
cool guy, fun lectures
very hard, but you can still learn so much and he is really nice and helpful.
Excellent teacher. Always prepared for class and makes it fun. He was also very reasonable and helpful.
too much writing but great class.

Brilliant and funny professor. Lyons is interesting and he knows his stuff. Test are hard.
This guy is to put it simply the man. He's the one that made me want to be a history major now I'm honor role at Illinois State.
ok class, but test were too difficult and he talks about issues that do no relate to my readings.
Hard. He is a good professor who love his students.
he's hard but it's worth coming to class just for the entertainment he provides. you won't regret taking his classes if you don't mind a little work and our willing to have a good time.
His blackboard quizzes made NO sense,he's not very helpful either, unless he likes you and you're good in his class.I think he grades the papers unfairly too.The class isnt death, but its extremely boring,he can be kinda funny tho...sometimes.All in all,i dont really like him...and will TRY not to get in any of his classes again.
Dr. Lyons is a pretty cool guy. The quizzes are a little bunk, but if you come to class and listen to his lectures, you should be fine. He is also pretty funny- realizing that not everyone loves history- and therefore trying to make the class more enjoyable. While his class is a little difficult, I received an A-. He is definitely worth taking.
Professor Lyons is a great teacher in my opinion. He goes in to great detail the points that he is teaching.
I really enjoyed his class. He is my second favorite teacher I had at Juco.

I took his online class this semester, and it was great! Who knew American History could be so interesting?! His tests are essay form, but you have plenty of time to complete them. He made the class very enjoyable and had an excellent assortment of supplemental material.
DR. LYONS IS MY BEST TEACHER AT JJC. HE BROUGHT LIFE TO HISTORY. I NEVER WANTED TO LEAVE HIS CLASS I JUST ENJOYED HEARING HIM LECTURE. I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE HIM. HE IS SO FUNNY!!!
This guy is great. Everybody loves him. He is sharp and funny, knowledgable and that makes him very hot. All history majors should take their Lyons share of history courses...if they can!
The workload is heavy. All the tests are essay, the quizzes are multiple choice. There is also a term paper. This is not an easy class. That being said, I did learn a lot! He is very thorough, and the class is interesting. I did get an A, but I worked for it. He seems like a really nice guy, and is very helpful.
I took this class online and was pretty happy with it. yes, it is a lot of writing but he grades fair and is very helpful.
Dr. Lyons is a funny, funny guy! His English accent is definetly hilarious. This class does involve work and understanding, but he's fair. The class basically consists of two papers, two midterms, a final, and weekly quizzes. You MUST do the reading to pass the quizzes. There's a fieldtrip too.
I love this man. He is sweet and so helpful and passionate about his subject. He reads every discussion board post, and analyzes them as a group, telling everyone what we did well on. It really gives you confidence in the class. The work is difficult & heavy, but if you work hard you will do well. He's great, take him!
WOW!! can't say eanough except sign u p for his classes early...they go fast. He is fabulous and if you want to really learn about history, his classes are for you. Expect to work but in a very usefull way...Have fun!
This class was by far the hardest class that I have ever taken at JJC and I have been going there for over 4 years... he grades really hard and expects you to write a novel about each test.. I do not like history and yea he was passionate about the subject and all but he even makes you read a novel about muhammad and write i wouldn't take him again
Dr. Lyons is a wonderful professor. He has a vast amount of knowledge about history, and does a great job of making it interesting for students. If you take good notes during the class, you will do well on exams. I solely used his notes to study for exams and not the textbook, and did very well. I highly recommend Dr. Lyons!
I took this as an online summer class. There was a ton of work and not alot of time to get it done, especially if you are taking more than 1 summer class. He took a long time to respond to any questions I had. I will not be taking any of his classes again.
Great teacher!
Class is fun overall and I look forward to it every week.
Dr. Lyons is an amazing instructor. There is a reason he was able to write books on the methods of teaching history! But, do NOT expect to have an easy time in his class. He is extremely wonderful to learn from, but expect to learn because there is no room for slacking in his class! I would love to take another of his classes though!
Great teacher, has an English accent which made the class more interesting for me. Taking in class notes is a must because he goes over a lot of stuff in class. Tests were essay tests usually given during the first half of class. There is a lot of info that needs to be remembered. All and all he does a great job teaching the class.
Dr Lyons was very nice and very helpful, plus he had a great sense of humor. He was a tough grader as far as the papers went, but if you came to class the tests weren't a big deal. I'd recommend him to anyone!
Dr. Lyons is the perfect teacher for someone who wants to major in history. The work is hard but if you do all the reading you will pass with flying colors. He teaches in a way that actually makes you retain what you are learning and not just forgetting it after you take the quizzes. Loved this class!

entertaining lectures, he expects alot from his students, but great teacher.
John Lyons is one of my favorite teachers. I wasn't very interested in the subject beforehand, but he made it so interesting and fun! It was almost a 3 hour class, but time flew by! The tests were essay, which can be hard, but as long as you studied the study guides, it's pretty easy to get an A. Love him and would recommend him to anyone!
Good teacher. Took the class online. Quizzes were really hard but the discussion posts were easy points. All exams and finals were papers but he is such an easy grader. Would take again.
Great teacher, has a good sense of humor and makes class interesting. Only take his classes if you are willing to do some serious work, but all the work is def worth it. also took his hist 107 class.
I took Dr. Lyons American History 101 and 102 online classes. As long as you do the discussion boards and read the material it is an easy class.
Dr. Lyons is a fantastic professor. I took his class online. Like all have said quizzes are difficult. You must read the chapters to do well. That being said we were assigned one chapter for a week. Not much at all. He offers excellent feed back for ALL assignments. I highly recommend Dr. Lyons you won't regret taking his class!
Going into this I did not like history but I think his class was hard. I read the book, did the quizzes, and wrote the papers but still got a D in his class :(
The quizzes are hard, you really have to read through the chapters and understand them to do well. The exams were relatively easy and he didn't assign a lot of work each week (took this class online). He gives excellent feedback on papers and discussion boards.
I took this class online and I considered dropping it. The online quizzes are ridiculously hard and I dread taking them. I love History, but this class made it so boring. I will not be taking his class again.
I took this class online, and he is great with keeping the class updated with everything. I won't ever take a class with him again though. His quizzes and db's are extremely difficult, and the end of semester papers are hard ones. Not recommend if you want to breeze through it.
I cannot stress how horrible my experience was with this teacher. He was less then helpful in every way.
If you take this class to learn about American History then you picked a great Professor. How many other Professors has written an online guideline on how to succeed? He's actually in it to push you toward your accomplishments. I took him online and really had to buckle down and just pay attention to the assignment instructions and I got an A!
cont'd And I am taking another one of his classes next semester. I really enjoyed what I've learned and also picked up some great tips on studying and applying myself to my online classes.
Amazing professor. Completely transparent. If you go to class, take clear notes, your literally have the exams. Don't let the essay portion freak you out because there are in depth discussion and he does give you all the information you need.
Excellent teacher, very funny and interesting. He is a tough grader, and expects you to do a lot of stuff online which I didn't particularly like.
Awesome guy. He requires A LOT of work, so get ready to take a quiz and maybe a discussion post every week. However, the info is all relevant and fun to learn. If you love History, make sure you get a class with Lyons!
Best teacher at JJC.
By far my favorite teacher at JJC. So much so that I am building my schedule for next semester around his History of Great Britain class. Tough grader, but in a way that gets the best out of you. Highly recommended.
His online class is awful.
Best teacher for history, I promise.
He is a super nice guy. it was pretty cool to learn american history from a british man.
Review of Lyons: 1.) Gives Excellent feedback. 2.) Grades essays with integrity. This man understands that history can get monotonous. He knows it. So when he grades your papers he takes a big picture approach. If you argue solid ideas with relevant and accurate historic facts, your'e in the clear! BTW: Do the extra credit, especially in online his
He's a great teacher every lecture had a quiz at the end of the week, I passed with a B he's helpful but his essay tests are what had me at a B I recommend him he's very funny if you sit in the front he will call on you and he gives easy extra credit points 20 just for attending a field trip
If you love history, this is the class to take. Professor Lyons is the best history teacher on the planet. His tests are clear and easy to pass IF you can do paragraph essays. He makes learning fun and enjoyable. I can still recall everything he taught us. Gives good extra credit if you take the time. I highly recommend you study your materials.
This is the second time I have taken him and if the chance comes up I would again. He is very interesting to listen too and funny.
Terrible professor. Do not take him! Almost all of his questions are opinionated and it is nearly impossible to answer when it is a multiple choice quiz. There is a 7 page paper due at the end of the semester that he does not open until the final week. His final exam is three separate essays that he only allows two days to do (8 pages worth).
I loved his class. He is super funny and really knows what he is talking about. The tests are essays, but just study the notes and write as much as you know. There is a wiki project that you can do on anything within the time period, so it isn't that bad. The oral history paper is intimidating, but it is actually really interesting.
Don't take him unless you want to write. For the online class you have to write 250 words a week. Then for finals you have to write a six page final and a seven page paper on local history. So unless you plan on writing thirteen pages in a week, don't take him. It's like he assumes you don't have any other classes.
I had professor Lyons for an honors history to 1500 course. He made the class incredibly enjoyable, and was very personable. He allowed the class freedom while maintaining integrity. I always enjoyed attending class. The commenters saying that he is too hard are false. Prof. Lyons gives you the grade that you earn. I would recommend him to anyone.
Remarkably interesting. Passionate. British man that teaches British history, doesn't get better than that
I highly recommend this professor. If you don't understand something he will explain more. He has a variety of teaching teqniques (timelines, non-mandatory readings, study guides, watch occasional videos, power points, etc.) Do the online quizzes! Projects/tests&quizzes are graded fairly & returned quickly. Enjoyable class discussions/participation
Great class. You read a chapter and take a quiz on it every week plus three submissions in an online discussion board. If you read the chapter, the rest of the work is a piece of cake. Each exam is three 2 page papers- all material you cover in the reading and discussions. Great feedback from teacher and really quick grader. Easy A.
Mr. Lyons is a good professor. You have 1 or 2 quizzes each week with the chapters he assigns (make sure you read the chapters!). Midterm & Final are 3 two-page essays. Good feedback on your discussions and he is a quick grader. Put time in reading the chapters because you only get 15 mins to take the quiz (only bad thing). Use your time wisely.
If he is available online take his class!!! very easy, you need to read a chapter a week, participate in a discussion, and take reading quizzes and exams. very straightforward. I do have to say the exams are a bit blah. You have to answer 3 essay questions each being 2 pages. Its not hard just a little lengthy. I would take his class again tho!
I took his online class, he doesn't provide any power points or audio lectures. No notes at all to follow up .One extra credit website review at the end of the semester . His tests are 3 essay questions 6 pages total about the chapter readings.
Dr. Lyons is easily the BEST online teacher I've had. He gives amazing feedback, and explains everything very well in the syllabus. If you actually read the syllabus and the chapters assigned, you will be in great shape. He offers a extra credit paper at the end worth up to 30 points. I highly recommend him.
Mr. Lyons is the best history teacher I've had. After being out of school for ten years and knowing nothing about history, he made it easy to understand and made learning more interesting. If you need help, miss a test, come in late.. he works with you. highly recommended
He has one of the strictest online classes I've ever taken. Usually, the assignments are unlocked so you can tackle them and maybe get some things done early. Not with him. Everything is due on Sundays, and he doesn't unlock the next week until the day the previous weeks assignments are due. He rarely gives 100%. DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE CLASS!!!!
By far, this was the best professor I have ever had at Joliet Junior College. Professor Lyons' class was an absolute joy and it was the highlight of my week to listen to his funny and engaging lectures. He is charming, inspiring, and cares deeply about his students. The assignments spark critical thinking and he creates a great class atmosphere!
very fair professor, decent amount of work but not hard if you take time on it, grades very fast and gives explanation for the grade you receive
Amazing online History teacher! He gives thoughtful feedback on assignments. He also responds back very fast and the assignments are very straightforward.
Graded assignments quickly and fairly. Gave a lot of feedback so you know what he's looking for.
I LOVED him as a professor so much. His online class was so straightforward and I do not like history . He actually made it interesting. He also records a video with an overview of what you'd be learning that week, they were really helpful and interesting. He is also just an interesting person in general and he gives LOADS of extra credit. Love him
Professor Lyons is a super passionate and kind professor. The class I took was generally interesting but super writing intensive. You have to do two discussion posts a week that are each 250 words long, then there is a 7 page paper due at the end of the semester. This doesn't account for the final. It's easy to pass as long as you like writing.
Great professor! He is obviously very passionate and the only professor I have that I actually enjoy listening to his lectures. He also doesn't upload several hour long lectures, he instead breaks them up in several short videos. Would absolutely recommend taking a class with him!
Lyons classes are all very straightforward. Expectations are listed clearly. Read his notes, take weekly quizzes (based right off the notes), and write the 4 page essay exams 3-4 times a semester. I spent no more than an hour a week on the class. Highly recommend.
Professor Lyons is amazing! His class is very straight forward, and as long as you put in the work, you will easily pass with a good grade. A lot of reading from the book, but nothing you cannot handle. Very accessible outside of class, gives great feedback, and is overall just so sweet! I would take his class over in a heartbeat!
Professor Lyons is easily the best professor Ive had at JJC. He makes it clear that he genuinely cares about the success of his students. I have attended JJC for the past 3 semesters, and have taken a course with him each time. Such an amazing and understanding professor.
I had him on an online class this semester. Good communicator, always gets back to you either the same day or in a day or so. Gives really good feedback on the essays. Just make sure you do your discussion boards and weekly assignments, and you should be all set. He also has some extra credit stuff that's worth good points at the end of the sem.
He does not help much when it comes to comprehending the text of his textbook chosen.
does not help students understand the material.
Professor Lyons was awesome! He made videos each week to help you understand the topic of the week. He gave many extra credit options and was super friendly and fun! I would definitely take him again!
He made history class enjoyable even though it was online. Professor gives out many extra credit assignments that are easy. Weekly assignments include a 10-question quiz for every chapter you are required to read, and a discussion board post with two replies. Professor Lyons responds to questions fast or within a day. I would take it again!
Professor Lyons made me want to become a history teacher. He made online class fun, and his lectures were great too. He's also quite hilarious. Professor Lyons was quick to help with any questions I had. The week consisted of one quiz, one discussion board, and a couple of papers. Easy papers if you take the quizzes, and read the material.
What a wonderful man. He provides good feedback, always has something nice to say, and is one of the most fair and laidback teachers I've ever had. Offers lots of extra credits and he likes talking about silly small stuff that really makes you feel connected with your teachers. He's just lovely, can't recommend him enough.
Overall he was a good teacher. He was quick to respond if you had questions and assignments were straight forward. There are a lot of essays in this class so beware of that. I would take him again for sure!
Dr. Lyons is a very easy going professor. He was helpful when needed and I think really makes you like history. His exams are 3 essay questions (you have 3 of these papers) and you have one big research paper. He offers a ton of extra credit and is a very easy grader as long as you do your assignment.
This Professor was pretty great. definitely a class that needs your full attention. but He has great feedback and is fast with getting back to you with grades which is great. I would recommend to take his classes. he gives plenty of extra credit as well
This is my second time taking his online course and I still love it. His online lectures were great. You have weekly quizzes of 10 questions, and 3 exams (Essays). He was quick to answer questions and gave great feedback on your work. He also has tons of extra credit that can help boost your grade! So sad this is probably my last history class.
Although there were many discussions and a lot of reading, the assignments were consistently easy and the exams were essays, but easy essays. He gave you the question which was simple to answer. He also genuinely reads your discussion and grades them so I know he's genuinely involved.
13 discussion posts(195 points, initial post 250 words long), 14 weekly quizzes(280 points, not rlly google searchable), 2 exams (200 pts, they're papers, not timed, & online), 2 other papers for finals (not timed, online). Pretty easy class, somehow took the information better in this class than in any history class I've ever taken before, take it
I loved Professor Lyons, he is so funny and a fantastic lecturer. However, if you miss class you will miss out on A LOT of information, as the slides he posts do not contain all of the information he speaks about. You must study for his exams, as they are all essays and he is quite picky with the responses. The extra credit is great.
He is the best! His exams are essays so if you don't like writing I don't recommend him. He does offer a LOT of extra credit and gives great feedback on assignments, discussions, and essays. He also is very good at explaining historical events in his videos. I definitely recommend him over any other history professor
The course was easy but it was a TON of writing. Every test was a six page paper and at the end of the semester there was an additional seven page essay on top of the six page test that was due around the same time. It was a super easy and informative course just very time consuming due to all the writing.
I definitely recommend this professor to anyone, he leaves great feedback on papers. heavy workload with 15-16 quizzes and discussion posts throughout the semester, along with a 6 page midterm and final, and a 7 page research paper. Easy grader on all work though, would definitely take him again!
Professor Lyons is one of the best professors at this school. There is a lot of writing, all exams are six-page essays and there is a seven-page essay, but his class (and him) are so fun the writing is beyond worth it. He responds in minutes to emails, if sent at decent hours, and he is so generous with his responses. I have taken him 3 times.
Professor Lyons was great! I took an 8-week course online and all of his material was simple to understand, an easy A if you turn everything on time. Just a lot of writing for midterms and finals as well as a local history paper.
Easy to reach and very helpful if needed. Lots of reading and writing, but it is pretty easy overall. He gives good feedback and is pretty clear on instructions and grading criteria.
Dr Lyons was a great professor. He is very passionate about History and is willing to help you understand the material. If you need anything, he is there for you. His US courses are online so you miss out on having him lecture, which I would love to see, but I'm pretty sure he teaches other scopes in person. British so there is an accent, fyi.
He's a great Prof what every Prof should be. Expectations are clear from start of the semester and as ongoing as you read the book not hard at all. The papers can be daunting but as a strong writer I didn't struggle at all. 100/10 would recommend over and over.
Mr. Lyons has been a great professor this semester! His lectures are ones that you definitely want to listen to, he is hilarious! The class was only once a week and after our lectures we usually took a quiz about the lesson. As long as you take notes, complete your assignments when they are assigned and attend the class and you will do good.
He was a great teacher I took his in person hist105. I had a lot of issues with commuting but he was so understanding. I will say nobody ever got a perfect score on any of his exams/projects he's a bit particular but I would say he was fair. No homework but we had quizzes every week just read what he provides and you'll be good. I'll miss him!
