Everyone is this class fails every test and he curves them all to make the class average a B-. It's impossible to fail if you take all the tests. If you put in a little effort (which not many people do) you'll get at least a B+. If you try hard it's an easy A. Just doing better than others = A.
this teacher is funny, but the class is awful, he is of little help in most situations, very enethical, admitted that he writes test in a way to trip up the students, class average on tests are 49.9% that should tell you something, don't take his class.
i had him last spring and i rarely went to class. all his study guides were true, with a random false and i failed all the tests but he curved them and i ended up getting a B in the class.... it sucked but i got a B
Do not buy the book!!! He will tell you that you need it, and that you are supposed to read each chapter twice to do the assignments, but you are better off saving yourself the money. The tests stink, but you can get an A in this class if you study his worksheets.
His class was not very fun i like that he make jokes but it was not in a very funny way it was more of a mad scientist like way. Everybody fails his test his average is very low but he has a generious curve if you like getting a c or a b hes the one you want but if you want an A take somethingelse
The man is a complete quack! I have never taken harder tests in my life. His problem is he is to stuck on making low class averages instead of finding a way to help us learn the material. And YES! don't buy the book! I made that mistake and I don't think I have cracked it yet. And he smells!
People. If you read the book you will have a much better chance of understanding the class. I admit that his test were extreamly hard. But, he will stop and explane concepts and definitions if you have read and you know what to ask.
He purposly makes tests difficult to pass. Don't skip class if you can help it because all the information you need is put on the work sheet. Prepare to study long and hard for this class. He has an "interesting" sense of humor.
Quite easily the worst teacher I have ever had. For a 1010 Astronomy class, he taught this like some senior level science class. He thrives off students failing too. At least he wears his blue man group shirt everyday though.
He is way funny and a great teacher. But his class is very hard.
Wierd sense of humor. I laughed mostly at him along with everyone else but oh well. I went to every class and stopped reading the book after the first test. I scored higher on my test when I stopped reading the book and started reading the sheets more. The trick is most people do not study because of curve. Just study and be better than them. A
This teacher is horrible!!! I guessed C on one of the tests and scored better than most of the other students. He doesnt teach very well however he does have a strange and some what funny sense of humor, but if you want a good grade and to learn something take someone else.
He is a very funny professor and knows the material. College isn't a time to be lazy, you need to study. If you study then you will do well. Only those who can do a little work give bad ratings. He makes the course fun. I Highly recommend this professor.
I don't understand why everyone gives this guy such bad ratings. His tests seem hard, yes, and he does have a weird sense of humor, but if you come to class and study the worksheets, you will do very well. I got an A in this class and that's all I did. I got very bad grades on all tests and quizzes, but the curve is VERY generous.
First I wasn't sure I would do good in the class, but actually it is pretty easy if you study the worksheets. If there are any questions he will find time to answer them and explain. I would recommend this teacher.
his class sucked hardcore, atleast i sat next to a hot girl, thats pretty much all i cared about in that class, he was so boring and taught nothing i always left after like 10 minutes of class haha, i dont recommend him...although he was an easy A
Easy class funny teacher wants to help the students
Very eccentric teacher he's hilarious. Do your homework and study a little for tests and you can get a good grade. I got a B+ or A-. Not too tough.
he is a fun, crazy guy. his tests are pretty easy if you take the time to do a little studying. you don't need to buy the book...he summarizes the chapters and gives you handouts on important info.
He has way too high of expectations for a reqired class. If you can talk him into doing a review for the tests you might have a chance at passing but if not your screwed. But he grades on a curve so that helps.
You really never use the text book, and his tests come right from the study guides, but good luck getting him to class, because he was gone half of the time and that was his excuse for never reviewing for the tests. Since he grades on a curve that makes his class easier. I recommend him if you study on your own, cause then you'll do fine.
turn in all your study guides and that counts as a test. He is a pretty freaking funny guy, but a little weird. The test come right from the study guide sheets which you get every day. What kept me from gettin a bad grade was that he grades on a curve which is sweet
John Powell is pretty funny, but his lectures are somewhat difficult to understand.
He is great because if you understand the material you aren't required to go to class. He is really smart and seems hard but by the time grades come in you will be pleased! He gives you what you deserve.
This man is so weird. He just acts like a freak the entire class period and almost acts like he's mad when the class does well on the tests. Is not very helpful at all. I would not recommend him. He's a freaking psycho.
Science isn't my forte and the teacher didn't help any. He had to grade on a curve because the average on each test was 40-60%. He took no responsiblilty for this, and instead of realizing no one understood his teaching, he shrugged the tests off as "hard". Gives horrible reviews for tests, and gives no extra credit. Everyone felt the same.
He is hucking fillarious! I loved his lectures. His tests are impossible, but he curves them a lot. Science sucks in generall and you have to memorise a million things. But it is one of the only classes i've taked that I use what I learn all the time. I loved his labs and went multiple times and still look forward to them.
Powell was a goofy teacher, but I liked him. He was pretty easy, no homework! Study for the tests though they are more difficult, but he reviews!
HE is a very odd man, but he is very funny, his class is very easy, if a test average is low he gives everyone points, I like his teaching style even though he is "Goofy"
Great teacher and makes the class fun. He is very helpful in making sure his students are successful and pass the class. Must have teacher for this course
Not much homework. 5 tests, you can drop your lowest test score @ end of semester. His test reviews are great! He is a funny guy. It is not a hard class, however, I still learned a bunch. I would recommend this class.
Pretty cool
I liked him. I thought he was funny and I liked the class (even though I didn't really go). But in his class it IS important to go, even though it's not mandatory, because he gives little 5 question mini quizzes every day. Some good things are that the tests are all multiple choice and he grades on a curve.
I had no interest in this class and was totally taking it to knock out my generals, but it ended up being my favorite. I loved it! Professor Powell is excentric and hilarious! I would reccommend him for sure.
I thought I was going to DESPISE this class, I hate science. My first day, I almost walked out. Dr. Powell can be a bit much to take. Very eccentric. But he's pretty funny and I was entertained. LOVED going to class, did my homework, studied hard and got an A+. Highly reccommended teacher, I learned to love Science and had a great experience.
Professor Powell was great. His tests are not that hard, if you listen in class or study homework. Tests are from homework. Attendance is mandatory, but it helps you to boost your grade. Quizzes are super easy, open note. He explains material clearly, very energetic person. Never was bored at that class.
I really liked this teacher. As long as you study what he gives you, you will ace the tests. You don't even need to bother buying the textbook. I never read a page. He was so easy.
Great teacher. Super energetic and always had a ball in his class. Theres minimal homework and just study the worksheets and you'll do great. He does reviews, EXTREMELY helpful. Be there for Chapter quizes (3 questions) you get 7/10 just for being there. Open note quizzes
Great teacher. Super energetic and always had a ball in his class. Theres minimal homework and just study the worksheets and you'll do great. He does reviews, EXTREMELY helpful. Be there for Chapter quizes (3 questions) you get 7/10 just for being there. Open note quizzes :]
I can't get it to put a smiley face. The two comments below are mine, and i want them to have BIG SMILEY FACES, because I liked him so much!
This class is pretty good. The professor just reads the study guide pretty much word for word. He is really really energetic about the subject. I personally have a hard time paying attention, and just read the study guides for the test. The tests are decent and he has quizzes that are his way of doing attendance and they are open notes.
Make sure you turn in the study guides. All the true and false answers will always be true. the test come right off the work sheets he gives you. He makes the class really enjoyable you don't always have to go though its not that important as long as you get the study guides to study. I would take the class again.
Dr. Powell is great. He drops lowest test score or attendance/homework points and tests have a big curve. Hes fun and energetic. The tests are nearly word for word off the homework sheets and the answers are almost always A/True for the homework. Definitely take this professor, especially if you are not a science person but need the class.
Quirky sense of humor, knows his subject, gave helpful lectures from handouts which were great substitutes for taking notes. Loved his class and looked forward to attending, learned tons. I even like the subject now. A high recomendation if you actually want to learn something. I got an A.
Avoid him if you struggle with chemistry and physics because he is really hard to pay attention to. He reads off a piece of a paper the whole class. I wouldn't recommend him.
Professor Powell is an amazing teacher!! He makes the class fun and entertaining and you learn a lot!! He has an awesome personality and I found myself laughing at him numerous times. His tests are way easy if you go to the study review and he grades on a curve. He doesn't teach by powerpoint either which is the most boring/worst way to learn!
I loved his class and recommend him to anyone! If you need help with anything, he will more than willing to help out. If you study and pay attention you will definitely get an A. He makes everything very entertaining and he is hilarious.
I took this class about a year ago and I still don't understand why its a 100 level class. Maybe it's just the instructor. But I think I learned more in this class than any other class I've taken so far. I'm in Chem1010 now and I'm using stuff I learned in his class. Great professor. Go to class + study handouts for tests = A
Easy if you put effort into it, really hard if you don't. He always tries to relate what you're learning into movies or pop culture which, although silly, can be very helpful for remembering. His tests are hard, but he does a review before and after them. There is no homework if you attend class!
He is WILD. Do all the homework, and be there for the test reviews and you'll pass. I hardly went to class. He is CRAZY. Always animated and yelling. Kinda funny but slightly disturbing.
Not my favorite teacher but he was okay. Lectures the whole class but with notes that are turned in for points. Tests are REALLY hard but he does curve them. I would recommend reading the chapter and paying attention in class if you want an A... otherwise expect a C.
I took this class two years ago and he is one of the best professors I have ever had. He tries to keep the class fun and entertaining. If you do the worksheets, go to class and listen then you should get an A. His tests come straight from the worksheets, which he always gives you the answers to. I never read the text book and still got an A.
He is a pretty crazy and kind of cooky, really weird guy. The class was pretty fun.
I love him! He is way funny, and he makes the class interesting. I hate science, but I got a way good grade. If you struggle, read the chapter before the class. Drops lowest score, or attendance. He GIVES you the test, basically, in the HW sheets to study for. He reviews before and after tests. Pay attention, go to class, you'll get at least a B.
So funny! You need to go to class for the quizzes-they're no stress. The tests are pretty rough but study and you'll be fine. That's all you need to worry about. He's awesome. Take him.
He is a funny guy but his lectures seemed to be pretty much useless and the tests are hard. He basically just reads off of the study guides and calls it good. If you read the text you will do well. However, if you are hoping for a teacher who gives great, engaging lectures I would recommend somebody else.
He's hilarious. He makes funny jokes all throughout class! Tests are a breeze if you study. He grades on a curve and DROPS the lowest exam. Print worksheets off the internet and spend class going over the answers. Enjoyable class.
He is so funny. I took his class and did great. The homework is really easy and he goes over the answers in class. He's nice and it's a fun astronomy class. YOU SHOULD TAKE HIM. My friends all have other astronomy teachers and complain. I have NO COMPLAINTS with Powell. His class is fun and not too hard. Just right!
HE stands in the front of the class and just talks. most of the class is talking as well and he does nothing to control it. Hw is done in class which is nice but the tests are super hard. He does grade on a curve but He lives on the theory that if the class average is above 70% the test wasn't hard enough. I wouldn't take him again.
Listen to the review! The test questions for astronomy were 100% of the review. Get a study buddy to make sure you get all the questions tho, bc he talks fast when he goes over it. It's a verbal not written. Wish I realized at the beginning of the class the the test was 100% review.
This class is an absolute joke. He's a nice guy, but a horrible teacher. He belongs in some lab researching than at the front of a classroom. Never keeps to his own syllabus and can never get the tests into the Center when he says he will. DO NOT TAKE this class from THIS PROFESSOR! You'll giggle a lot, but you'll learn nothing and waste time.
This guy just talks really loud the whole time. But his worksheet=his tests. no homework, jus listen to him in class and read the worksheets. he tries to LET you pass the class.
He talks loudly AT his students. The only reason I went to class was to take the chapter quizzes. Everything else you need to know is in his worksheets, which he posts online. The tests seemed moderately difficult. He goes over the materials really quickly. Study the worksheets, take the chapter quizzes in class, read the text, and you'll be okay.
I was not impressed with this class at all. He just pretty much reads off his worksheets he prepares and asks questions from them. I was lost, but I also did not read the textbook much and physics does not come easily to me, but what I ended up learning was directly from the book. Fortunately this class was not required for my degree.
I hated this class. Didn't learn a thing. He spends more time cracking jokes than he does actually teaching, and his idea of teaching is just reading off the homework. You hardly even need the book unless you want to do the homework ahead of time. He was distracting, and could be quite rude. I was lost and felt I could not speak with him. Regret it
This is the most pointless class ever! I have not learned anything at all. I was so excited to take astronomy, but he does not explain anything at all, and I was so lost the entire time. He is a loud and obnoxious man. Don't take this class, it's a joke.
This is the worst experience I have had since attending UVU as far as professors are concerned!! I did not learn anything from this teacher. He spent class periods cracking lame jokes. His test are extremely hard. Avoid this teacher like the plague!!
He is one of the funniest teachers I had. He talks really loud but that's just how he is. He gives you all the answers for the homework on the sheets you have to print out. If you keep two copies of the assignments then you can use them to study for the tests which is also super easy because he goes over all the answers for his test the day before!
This professor is not very clear about the class up front. I had no clue what I was supposed to be doing until after we took the first test. Once you get used to his teaching habits, the tests get a little bit easier. Listen carefully, and study hard! Otherwise, you will be completely lost.
Great professor! Super funny. Tests are hard but his reviews are exactly like the test so study everything he goes over. He also grades on a really good curve. He's a very intelligent professor so half of the time you may not know what he's talking about, but its ok. All you really need to know are the reviews. Overall such a great class!!
I really liked Powell. He wasn't boring and spoke up so you could hear him clearly in a big classroom. He prepares you for tests you just have to do your part and study.
You pretty much need to show up for quizzes and review days where he gives you all the answers to the tests and you will easily pass. Very boring. You won't learn anything from him. Don't buy the textbook or response card because you don't use them at all.
This guy filled in for our class and WOW. He understands the material, doesn't rely on a powerpoint to teach you, is engaging, and I honestly learned more from him in 1 day than I did from a whole semester with my regular teacher. Don't know how his testsgrading works, but he actually teaches! And I love that.
John Powell is the worst teacher at UVU. Instead of teaching he cracks the dumbest jokes I have ever heard in my life. He is loud and boisterous. He was so unhelpful. I wrote a formal complaint to the school about him. I've never tried to throw a teacher under the bus but Powell is the exception. Worst experience I have had at UVU.
Hated the class. Professor is annoying. Boring and pointless, but easy. He curves every test. Don't buy the text book.
He is a terrible teacher but his class is easy. Attendance definitely helps with the tests. I didn't buy the textbook and did good in the class. He gives you the answers to every assignment/quiz. He goes over the exams the day before you take them so write them and remember them because they are the exact same ones on the test. All multiple choice.
Please only take this class if you are really, really interested in astronomy. I only took it because I needed another science credit, and I really regret it. His lectures are long and confusing, the book is no help, the tests are super difficult, and it's super hard to get an A. He's funny and cool, but avoid this class unless you love astronomy
This class was not too bad! Dr. Powell was a good teacher; he's very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He simplifies some of the more advanced/fancy chemistry and physics stuff for this class. Lectures are long, but he tries to make it fun. He curves all the tests which is nice. He often has reviews for the tests as well. Easy class overall.
Powell isn't that bad. If you participate in class he'll make accommodations for you. A lot of teachers won't do that. Skimming over the text book chapter the night before class helps you understand a little what is going to be talked about. Make notes on your assignments. That will help you in the long run. free pdf of textbook on line
If you show up to the review sessions before each test, and write down everything he says, you can easily get an A on the test. He gives word for word answers to the tests, the class before you take it. Make sure you get the quiz answers, pretty much you can show up to the first 15 minutes of class, take the quiz which is open note and then leave.
THIS CLASS SEEMS LIKE IT WILL BE HARD AT FIRST BUT IF YOU GO TO CLASS ITS REALLY EASY TO GET AN A BECAUSE HE GIVES YOU ALL THE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS TO TEST THE DAY BEFORE THE TEST. YOU HAVE TO GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY BECAUSE HE GIVES A QUIZ ALMOST EVERY DAY BUT HE GIVES YOU THE ANSWERS TO THOSE ALSO.
Class is test based. He gives you the lectures on paper previously. You put "true" for all of the answers and then turn them in for minimal credit. Hilarious! "And that's how I knew THAT movie was fictional!" Excellent teacher. Knows his stuff and will tell you when he doesn't.
If you do the homework, go to class, and take advantage of the test reviews he gives, you'll do fantastic. Easy A for sure.
Powell was alright. I didn't love him, but he wasn't bad. The homework is super easy. There is a review before every test and go to them because they help. The tests are too bad and they are also graded on a curve. Study hard for the final it's a lot of your grade. He also drops your lowest test which is nice. Don't get the text book.
His lectures are SOOOOO BORING. Each test is pretty easy, because he gives the answers to the test the lecture before the test. Tests are taken in the testing center. They are 50 questions. The final test is hard. It is 100 questions. Make sure to record his last lecture in order to do good on the test.
This class was pretty easy, but so boring. You have "assignments" that are basically just outlines of his lectures where you write "true" for each question and the exam questions come right off these assignments. He also drops your lowest grade. However, he NEVER POSTS GRADES ANYWHERE UNTIL THE END WHEN IT'S TOO LATE TO FIX IT AND IT'S THE WORST.
It is almost impossible not to pass this class. He grades on a curve and for the final, he put the scores out of 50 instead of the original 70. At the beginning of the semester, it felt like a waste of time because his teaching style is so unique but towards the end it was easier to understand him. It takes effort on the student's part to learn.
He makes sexist jokes during class, he is loud, obnoxious, and cuts students off in the middle of asking questions. He doesn't help answer question EVER outside of class time, ignores emails. If you need guidance, he tells you to ask classmates and refuses to help. You will read the entire textbook, quizzes every class, HORRIBLE teacher!!!!
This guy is pretty cool. His dry sense of humor works pretty well with his lectures. He talks really loud so you can always here him which is nice. His homework is almost word for word the same as his tests. He also makes it really obvious what questions are on the test. Loved his astronomy lectures. Really great at helping you retain info. A+
This class was so boring. I didn't want to go because his lectures were so dry and I had to teach myself the material. There are random pop quizzes though so that's what made me go to class. It was a pretty easy A, but I wouldn't recommend taking Astronomy from him.
Mr. Powell has a unique sense of humor which played in nice with the lectures and remembering what was said. If you show up and listen to what he says, then you will pass. He is loud so everyone can hear him. He reads off of his paper that he gives you so again, if you follow him, you'll get an A.
There's a quiz at the beginning of each class, but you don't need to show up to pass, missing these won't kill your grade. Final grade is made of 4 tests, daily quizzes, and a final. There's a review before all tests that give you the answers, the only day(s) you need to attend class. He also drops either your lowest test score or all your quizzes.
Dr. Powell is great. He doesn't give any assignments, so you have to do well on the tests and class quizzes. His test reviews are literally every question on the test so if you write down everything you'll get an A. He is funny and very knowledgable about astronomy, and makes it interesting.
Easy class to pass but won't learn much. The homework assignments are just reading from the textbook (hint: rent the book on amazon for a semester, way cheaper than buying it). The lectures are basically him just re-stating what you just read. Easy to get a good grade but hard to retain any info.
Powell is a great teacher& he is super funny. There is a quiz at the beginning of each chapter, but if u don't show up he will drop the quizzes OR ur lowest test score. The tests are a bit difficult but he gives you ALL the answers before the test so if you memorize them (which was super easy) you will pass. I'm not good at science and I have an A
Class is just a lecture of the chapter packets he gives you, all answers are A and he gives you the answers to the ones at the end of the packets that aren't A. He also gives you answer to quizzes. 3 50 question tests which he gives answers to on review days, drops lowest test. Final is 100 question test, he gives you review with all the answers.
This is easily the worst class I have ever taken. Though Professor Powell is very passionate about the subject.. he is a horrible teacher. Class is just a rant that he goes off on with no real purpose. Want to know your grade? too bad, you will not learn that until the end of the semester. He knows canvas exists.. he just chooses to not use it.
Super nice guy, but not a good teacher. He basically just reads the textbook each class. I felt that I didnt learn anything from him. He does not use canvas and so I did not know my grade all semester. I do not recommend you take his class.
Powell definitely has a "learn the material yourself" mentality aside from him reading directly out of the textbook during class. The tests are very similar to the reviews so that's good, but he does not put a single grade into canvas the whole time so there is little to no way of knowing why you received the grade you did. I would not recommend.
Super easy. He gives you all the answers to the tests and the final. For sure be there for the reviews the day before the tests but other than that you don't really need to go to class.
If I could rate him as a 0 I would have. I have never had a professor that put so little effort into teaching a class. He only uses canvas to give you sheets to print out that will be your study guide for every test so you never know your test scores. You're graded off of four tests and thats it. I didn't learn one thing in this class.
This was an extremely boring class. The prof. Would read off of a PowerPoint everyday which is online. So half way through the semester no one showed. You will have weekly tests but he gives you the answers on the reviews and exams are also open book.
Easily the easiest class I have ever taken. Every test was open note - even the final. I went to class 5 times the entire semester. I've never seen a professor care less than him. The last time I went to his class (the week before finals) he didn't say a word all class; he just turned on a youtube video and took a nap behind his desk. 100% serious.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. The class was insanely boring, the professor just reads slides off of a powerpoint. I honestly don't think I learned anything, all of this assignments were open note except for the final. I STRONGLY suggest you take this course from literally any other professor.
Edited: Dr. Powell died recently. He will be missed.
