Doesn't have a clue about Math.... you have to learn on your own!
The only prof in ubc who doesn't put proves questions on his 312 mid-term
No Comments
He's not organized. It's easier to learn it on from the text instead of readi
his midterms are easy but they dont prepare you for the finals
Confusing and extremely boring lecture
honestly the best math prof in UBC, he's a good person too
Really easy midterms but kind of boring
it's not interesting to be in his class
No Comments
unclear notes, not prepared from class, best to learn from text, nice though

PLEASE IMPROVE your presentation skills

knows math, cannot teach it, doesn't adequately prepare for tests
..............
boring lecturer, but okay exams
No Comments
boring, teaches examples from the textbook, no theory, doesn't pre for midterms
very good prof!
boring but easy
Good thing I knew most of the stuff from Calc 12. Nice guy but not a great prof
boring lectures, uses textbook examples, but midterms range from easy to crazy
Examples are straight out of the book and lectures are boring
he doesn t mean to teach poorly. a Prototypical mathematician looking. Oh well, cool
god... my hands been up, i've cleared my throat more than once, and excuse me s have been completely ignored... what's up with that?!... anyway, slow and ok teaching styles... great for nodding off or taking 5 min naps ^_^
every class is basically examples...nothing new

a truly polite and nice man. not very energetic but u get your own energy when u ace his course with not too much effort ;)
very nice guy, extremely shy. Horrific prof. All he does is examples from the book. I have had him for 2 terms now and he is much easier this term than last. Try and get a different prof if possible
Such a monotonous voice... Examples examples..

He is a truly nice little man but he wasn't meant to teach.
Really a nice guy, easy to understand - but a little shy and lacking firmness with the class. good with questions.
he's a typical mathemagician, but not meant to teach...he's really really nice and helpful tho...tries very hard..be nice to him
Absolutely terrible professor. A very nice guy, but THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Do yourself a favour and switch sections!!!
Too old.Too slow.Too unorganized. Should be retired.
nice man..but WORST PROF EVER..doesnt explain concepts or logic..just EXAMPLES! so CONFUSING! help me im dying in this course.
He's such a nice teacher, but he can't teach. Poor guy. He really does try to help, but he JUST CAN'T TEACH. If you do get him, just keep up with the hw, and go to the drop-in tutorials. They help.

im sure he thinks he knows what he's explaining everything but he doesnt... he's smart but if u didnt know he had his phd then i dont think you would think he was smart. HE NEEDS NEW GLASSES!
really really nice guy...but he has no clue how to teach. if you take this class, you'll need to find someone else to explain things to you because his class barely helps you understand concepts any better.
very helpful. and i think he's very cute and hot! he is old and nice!
ABSOLUTELY confusing!!! He has no clue how to teach! His work is all over the board, the class has to correct all the mistakes he makes! writes down everything he thinks-really annoying. Totally useless at explaining concepts. No control over the class!
nice guy! he works out problems on the board so that you know how to do them at home. Explains way better than the book, imho. People should shutup in class because it is distracting...tsk tsk
not very good at explaining, but very easy exams
..not that great in teaching but he's a very nice guy. he tries hard to help the class out as much as he can.
very easy class
TO UNDERSTAND THIS GUY, YOU 'MUST' KNOW A BIT OF MATHS!!! IF YOU DON'T, HE'LL BE THE MOST CONFUSING PROF. YOU'LL BE LIKE WHERE DID HE GET THAT ANSWER FROM?! BUT I THINK HE IS GREAT.
Terrible teacher. Couldn't understand anything he said. Mumbles. Doesn't know how to control the class, or to get his point across.
his notes on the board are clear, and he does speak good english, at least better than some other math 100 professors. just that his test are hard
i don't kno what these previous students were complaining about. but this guy is really nice and has unbelievably easy exams. he basically hands you the marks. you've got to be a complete moron to do badly in this course
Very Easy Prof. No Assignment and he makes easy midterms. Works quite slow and is very boring. Very helpful (if you actually ask him) but he's not the greatest prof to will prepare for the final. Try studying with Wetton
explained concepts well, but spent too much time on basic techniques and old material. Worked through lots of problems from the text (that were not explained in the text) which was helpful.
i'll give it to you straight. nice, easy-fair MTs, BORing. goes over easiest calculations in the most intricate detail, which wastes time meaining you'r screwed at the end cuz he'll be behind the curriculum. thats okay cuz you'll have aced the MTs by then
dude is good....timid as a mouse..class won't shut up..and he keeps askign them to quiet down like a little boy....marks his own exams..i believe..and easy marker...but he's slow, goes over max 2 questions in a lecture, but good teacher
Needs to do tougher problems in class. My biggest complaint is with the useless text not Dr Macdonald.
slow prof...teaches 2 examples in classes...that's it...his midterms are pretty easy...but the second was crazy, since he gave us super long calculations...the common final was not bad...it was simple. A good prof if you are a slow learner.
EXTREMELY slow prof! SUPER boring! basically does not teach anything. read the book and get A+. although i agree that he is very nice and approachable, his teaching is not good. if you really want to learn some math, you'd better choose another prof.
I got 90%, and I am a average student. Woohoo. If you read the textbook before going to class, then the lecture will be very easy to understand. If you don't, then it would be a really boring class, cause he goes SLOW.
EASY MIDTERMS. as for the finals, if u do the past exams, then u will do good. nice guy.
He is a very helpful and very patient professor to answer your questions after each single class. Moreover, he likes to give some examples from the exercise, which are quite good.
Incredably fair prof. Scales up is he feels that a test was too difficult. He's also really helpful during office hours, and is generally a good instructor. Gives lots of examples.
so nice + POLITE. class constantly talking - not good at keeping class under control. he politely EXPLAINS why class should stop talking in most gentle voice. once in a while he says "shut up". not a good lecture if you get easily distracted
Nice guy, but horrible teacher.
does not teach at all, read the text and you'll do well on the exams. Manages to fit in two examples per class. If you know the stuff like most people, then you will find it hard to stay awake. Taking notes is useless as he uses problems from the text
He is a super nice and helpful teacher. Tests are not difficult if u study. He goes over examples in class, n is very friendly at office hours. ppl may find his class boring, but if u're willing to learn and copy examples down, you'll enjoy and do well.
ONE BRUTAL TEACHER - I don't care if he went to Harvard and the U. of Chicago, my four year old brother could teach math better than him. Picks ridiculously easy and hard questions for tests - you will ace all but one/two questions and get 65-75. Also: VERY SLOW AND NOT GOOD AT EXPLAINING STUFF!!!!!
midterms u gotta study. one question is 20 marks!! he is a nice guy n helpful during office hours, but slow in class and just goes over problems.
Great Professor, but goes VERY SLOW! Goes over homework problems in class. Midterms are easy to fair. If you do your homework, you should do fine on the test. He gives some very easy questions on midterms and 1 or 2 hard ones. He's monotonish! Helpful during office hours..confuses himself sometimes!
he's a pretty hard marker. His midterms are easy but like someone else also said, if u get one question wrong on the test, u can kiss your marks good-bye.
no homework! he uses textbook questions / online practice problems as MIDTERMS! all u need to do it to finish all the problems and u don't need to attend his classes.
His class was *incredibly* bad + boring. MTs = easy except for 1-2 q's, which meant that you'd normally end up with 70ish%. He seems like a friendly guy, but too soft to teach math. Didn't tell some shmuck to turn their cell off during an exam, let it ring the whole time, just smiling and shrugging.
bad, boring, and pointless. that's his teaching. you'll die in his class if you're the type that requires teaching in your learning process. hah! IRRELEVANT, off-topic Midterms!
Very boring, pointless classes, copies answer from answer key, never teaches or explains, put irrelevant things you've never seen on midterms. Very very bad. Doesn't know what's he's teaching/doing.
He's a really nice guy, but just doesn't know how to teach.
The worse prof you'll ever have the misfortune of having. Incoherent notes. Weak, sporadic lectures. Irrelevant midterms. Does not seem passionate about teaching; never seems to want to improve. Inconsiderate > would not leave the classroom during in-class teaching evaluations! How unethical.
Good prof. Very helpful and willing to take the time to explain everything to you. Also, very boring. MacDonald teaches very slow and can only do 2 examples per class. This is useful if you don't understand anything, but other than that, it's just boring. Skip half the classes and read the text.
nice guy but very boring
He's a good prof if you didn't take calculus in high school. (Coming from Math 184) However if you did you will be really bored. He doesnt have a lot of confidence but if you have a question he can answer it. Seriously nice prof but not a good prof.
He can't teach.
He is a really nice man, he just can't teach. It is obvious he knows what he is talking about, he just has a hard time relaying the message to the class simply, most all of his explanations are long and drawn out...causing more confusion than need be.
Awesome prof! Summer class was easy, midterms a lot like the examples from class and the textbook
really good notes and super nice guy, and super easy tests because he'll give the class hints at what to look at and then the questins will be exactly the same. he doesn't even change the numbers!! the one problem is that he allows people to chat too loud in his class, but wicked prof
Horrible teacher. Lets people chat so loudly that the rest of the class can't hear the example he is giving on the board. And then he says, "Oh well, since everyone is talking, you obviously know how to do this so I'll just write the answer on the board." HOW BOUT TELLING YOUR STUDENTS TO BE QUIET?!
Great Pro~easy to get high mark~usually the test r very similiar to textbook problems~n' always reply to students questions and explain it~Luv it!
He is a VERY nice guy. He CAN teach but too careful to offend anyone. He's a too much of a gentle and nice nerd. I got to admit that he is VERY VERY patient and nice if you ask for help though.
Such a nice prof!! Really wanted students to do well so he made it very clear what was expected for the midterm and final. Practice midterms were given out that were exactly the same as the real ones. I hated math in high school but this class ended up being my best grade last semester. Definitely take this class with him! Very helpful and kind.
I COULDN'T AGREE ANYMORE WITH ALL THE COMMENTS. HE'S A SUPER NICE GUY. GENIUS. JUST CAN'T DELIVER ALL HIS BRILLIANCE VERBALLY. HOWEVER IF YOU SEEK HELP OUTSIDE OF THE CLASS HE WOULD BE MORE THAN WILLING TO GIVE YOU A HAND.
Dr. Lauchie Maconald really cares about his students's learning. Sometimes, lectures might be a bit vague due to abstract concepts. He is there for you if you have any questions. TA grader marks the assignments and test, and marks them quite harshly. You can always take it to Lauchie to have a look over it. Workshops are very helpful !!!
Super easy class. Dr. MacDonald is a such a nice prof and I thought he was a pretty good teacher. Once you go up to the board during workshops you see how hard it is to teach math and he did a better job than I could at least. I am horrible at math and this class was a sky-rocketing GPA booster for sure!
The questions he goes over in class are particularly helpful when studying for the midterms, many of the exam questions are very similar. The TA is often a hard marker, but if you think you deserve a better grade Dr. MacDonald will look over it again. I can tell he care a lot about his students, and whats to see them succeed.
Dr. MacDonald really cares about his students and wants us to succeed. His explanations can be a bit confusing, but most of the time I found them clear. He's very approachable and willing to clarify any unclear concepts, and his workshops really help prepare you for the midterms/final. Came into his class scared of math, but ended up doing well!
Pretty nice guy and tries his best to help. If you ask him about a question, he'll explain it nicely to you without judgment. Great guy overall.
Professor MacDonald is caring and very knowledgeable. He is easy to understand and very clear!
The prof is boring. His grading is really tough.
SUPER EASY EXAM
super nice guy! though you might need to review a lot outside the classroom
Can't speak for his math courses but SCIE113 was the worst class I've taken so far. His grading instructions are unclear, his classes are extremely slow and dull. He seems to give everyone very similar marks which don't reflect the quality of work; as if he's assigning random numbers in a range. Take it if you don't mind gambling with your GPA.
In his online class he just sits there with a pdf and reads it word for word... pointless lecture. He might be nice or helpful idk haven't talked to him. Good thing is though it's over halfway through the semester and I've only been to 2 classes and have gotten 2 A's and a high B on the 3 midterms so far just by using the textbook lol.
Prof Macdonald is extremely thoughtful for students, especially during the online semester. He cares about students and does not put pressure on students. Gave very reasonable tests throughout the term. If you have done the practice problems, you will find the problems very reasonable and likely to get A+.
He wastes like 20-30 minutes of the class going over the class instructions and leaves like 20 minutes to do the actual activity. It is not enough time especially if it is a group assignment. Like spend 10 minutes at most going over the activity instructions or post the instructions on canvas or smth.
Worst prof I have ever had! Should not be teaching SCIE 113. It is quite clear that this prof does not care about this course . Comes to class unprepared and spends the whole class time trying to figure out the lesson he is supposed to be teaching. When marking he gives out grades unfairly and only so that the class average is in the right range.
By far the most disinterested prof in any course I've taken so far. Classes are boring and don't matter since there's no mt/exam. His feedback was borderline useless, basically, just copy and paste from one student to another. He keeps all his grades within a small range so there's really no point in trying too hard. Also really slow at marking.
In each quiz there were 1-2 hard proof questions that didn't use any proving strategies taught in lecture. We were unlikely to do well in quizzes even though we had a good understanding, knew how theorems were proved, and did all the practice problems. Quizzes also tested on specific things in earlier units and there's no formula sheet.
He seemed incredibly disinterested in teaching SCIE 113 which is supposed to be a lecture focused course. Furthermore, marking is slow and given feedback is vague at best. Please do try to avoid this professor and class if you're considering SCIE 113 because it will be a GPA dropper. He really likes to maintain a strict average of 80%.
No matter how hard you work you will just get the grade he wants to give to keep the class average where he wants it. Never once gave meaningful feedback, extremely slow grader, highly recommend taking this course with a different prof. I found this course to be absolutely useless.
One of the least caring professors ever
The most boring prof I've ever had. His lectures are almost pointless as he almost exlusively reads from the textbook. All explainations seem half-baked and rushed at the same time. I do think he cares, he doesnt treat you like an idiot for asking a question. I would really only take his course if it was the last option.
All he did was just read off of the textbook and leave. Never taught us anything
Please stay away.
This man is a gem and everyone who says otherwise sucks. The content of 221 is boring and he's pretty old school, but he truly wants you to do well. Let me ask long questions after class (twice) because I never go to office hours. Goes over homework, exam Qs, etc. all in class. Sets you up for success (despite the fact that I might fail this lol)
GOOD HUMAN BEING FOR REAL. However, not everyone is meant to be a teacher... Exams are zero related to what you get practiced on textbook/webwork.
Good People? Yes. Good Teaching? Hell no.
DO NOT take this course with him! I dare you to even think about it! :( I am not gonna get into my desired major because of him :(
The professor is a kind person but struggles with teaching. Lectures mostly just read from the textbook. Exams don't align with class content. However, the professor does care and is willing to help outside of class. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep.
His grading is pretty tough. The highest mark he gave on any assignment was in the high 80s. He's a nice guy and pretty laid-back, so you won't have to participate much. I went to his office hours a few times to ask questions, and I ended up doing better than average on the papers. To be honest, scie 113 as a whole feels a bit pointless.
Had him for this class a couple years ago. Honestly, I respect the guy. He was a tough grader, but it made you work harder to get those good grades (it is possible, you just gotta put the work in). Since he was a tough grader, it was super rewarding when you did really well on something!
I'm basically paying 700 bucks to listen to a grandpa reread his notes from previous years.
This prof is really understanding and warm.
Prof. Macdonald is a very warm and understanding person.
