His tests come right from the lecture notes. Pay attention and the class is easy
Very knowledgable,funny,interesting teacher.Great personality!
Easy course, easy teacher, easy lab...
Very clear, keeps class interesting
Easy class, split the study guides between a few friends and you're golden
very knowledgible, fun
Easy and fun class- he is awesome!
INCREDIBLY STRAIGHT FORWARD, A REAL TEACHING ROLE MODEL FOR THE ONES THAT SUCK!
Great professor, loves the subject, clear notes, STUDY GUIDE=A

This dude rocks, class is manageable, and tests are sweet if you go to class

Madsen is the greatest guy...he makes class fun and easy!! five thumbs up!!
this guy is awesome, entertaining, thinks of the students. Go to class :)
best way to pass: go to class and if you need help go to office hrs-very helpful
Hes an awesome teacher. Make sure you have notes!! hes very funny
talks and writes very fast. nice guy. knows alot. he rewards u for comin.
GO TO CLASS! He gives free exam answers periodically. No need for textbook.
Awesome funny guy! He's the kind of guy I want to marry. Hint: Study Minerals
nice guy, interesting, but class is all about cramming and not learning.
Great prof. to have, very helpful and clear. Do study guides and go to class.
The lab is horrible. Nice guy, but does not help you half as much as you think.
Extremely nice guy and VERY understanding. If you study, you should do well.
Easy A if you go to class and at least review notes before exam. Good Professor
great teacher for boring subject matter

very kind and helpful
Extremely fair and clear. One of the BEST Professors I have ever had!!

One of the best professors - he has a real passion for teaching and is actually a kind person also
Madsen was the best professor i've had so far! He was always so helpful and really down to earth! Plus he's hot so that helped!
You can tell he loves what he does just by listening to him teach. He was one of the most understandable profs I had for the science semester. He's funny and helpful. He even knows how to talk us into coming to class on time in a civil way.
By far one of the BEST at UD! I Loved Everything about him!!! Clear, Funny, Cares
Def the best professor teaching the sci semester. always clear with expectations, and treats us all with respect. makes science interesting and gave helpful teaching tips!!
Nice man who cares about his students and can relate to them. Good professor who tries to make it interesting! Definetely recomend him!
Best professor I have had at UD! He's the only reason I'm glad I took science semester. He is very compassionate & enthusiastic. Tests are somewhat difficult but not unfair if you study! Intelligent & hot, will you marry me??!!
The only science class i've ever enjoyed. Don't buy the book. Tests ae right from the notes. TAKE HIM for an easy A
great guy. makes class interesting with semi-funny realworld examples. loves his job. had to turn in paper personally and he was really nice & helpful. if u have to take science, try & take it with him. the grades are FAIR. u get what u earn.
This guy is great! I really wish he had taught more lectures. Wehmiller (other prof. for 111) is terrible. Madsen made the class fun and he has a great sense of humor!
Take this class if you can!! It was awesome...he is extremely helpful and clear in lectures. Study the study guides he puts online and you'll get an A. Don't buy the book, if you do miss a lecture its in the library reserve room anyway! GREAT CLASS!
An easy A... his print outs on webct are really helpful, and make sure to use his study guides. He's funny, cute, and really straight forward with his topics
So much more easy to listen to than Wehmiller. I wish he had done the lectures all the time instead of only half. Great personality and makes the lectures interesting. Not bad to look at either ;)
This guy likes volcanoes a little too much...
I loved him and this class. I was really uninterested in taking this class but he made it really interesting. Watch out for the lab though it is harder than it appears.
Great class. Lectures are interesting and will help you. If few people at class he will give you the essay quest that will be on exam. Make sure you study for the first exam and lab quiz because they are hard but the class is easy after that.
This class is not rocks for jocks, that is Geological Hazzards. Fairly intersting class, I'm not a science guy but got c+ with sporadic effort.
Great great teacher! very helpful if you ever need anything at all! the class is a little tough in the beginning, but if you do the practice tests you'll get an A
I took this class during winter session (for my science with a lab) and missed the whole first week for a conference, but Madsen was very helpful in helping me get caught up. He makes things very clear and is funny too. Great class and a great teacher! Very good at what he does - take this class if you get the chance!
i loved this class, and madsen made it awesome. Don't bother reading the book, his exams come right from his notes. class is a little boring and you have to memorize alot of rocks, but it was an easy A
If Madsen could only teach all my classes, I would easily have a 4.0 gpa and look like a child prodigy! He makes all his classes interesting and fun.
I LOVE JOHN MADSEN! I could not have had a better professor for this class! This man is so passionate about the class material, which keeps his students interested. Class lectures are always clear so students aren't confused as to what is and isn't important! Great class and easy A if you go to lecture and use study guide/previous tests!
John Madsen is the best professor. He is so cute and so funny and I love going to class to hear what he has to say because he loves geology like no other. Go to class, take notes and use sample exams...you'll get an A. AND HE'S THE CUTEST with his little backpack and love for weather patterns/rocks/clouds.
AWESOME! The best word to describe this guy, he had my friend and I laughing the entire time in lecture. Lol he's a quirky prof. and makes everything interesting. He's so cute with his love for geology and how excited he gets over earthquakes, rocks, and weather patterns. Make sure you go to class or you'll miss out on a lot of helpful hints ;).
GREAT PROFESSOR, I LOVED HIM! HISTARICAL!You dont need to bother to buy the book, I didnt and I did fine. Tells you everything you need to know in lecture, but you can miss class all you want, just get the notes from someone later on. The tests arent easy, but I didnt do good on any and I still got a B in the class. I highly recommend his class!!!
While i have no interest in science, i did very well in this class. He is entertaining and goes over material well. While attendence isnt mandatory, going and taking good notes and doing the study guides will make the class pretty easy, Labs suck though! but i defintiely recommend this professor!
awesome prof.really nice.very personable.funny,too.makes geol interesting.don't miss his lectures, theyll actually help u understand the course.do your research paper on something interesting, otherwise youll kill yourself doing something on boring rocks.if u have questions, ask him.dont bother with wehemiller.
I loved Madsen. I took him during Winter Session and loved it. He's a really great prof. and very helpful. He doesn't help out with the labs, which sucked becuse our TA stunk.
awesome prof.go to class do study guides and its an easy A
Write everything he writes on the board. If you do this, it is all you have to stdy for the tests. I studied the night before every test and never got worse than an 85. Labs are so simple. There is a quiz at the end of each lab that are ridiculously easy. Lab test every 3 weeks that are also easy. Go 2 class, study notes and get an A. At least A-.
If science does not interest you, this class may not be for you. I attended all classes, every lab, completed the study guides, etc. but got 70's on the tests. He doesn't take attendance, but most of what you need to know is easier to comprehend if you're in class than reading it out of the book.
Madsen was cool. I think the only reason I actually got a good grade in Lab was b/c he taught the thing. We had one of the idiot TA's once or twice, and I learned NOTHING! Overall, pretty interesting class.
Very cool professor. Never read the book, but I did alright. Go to class, do the study guides and sample exams. Lectures can get a little dry, but overall he's quite funny.
This class was really easy as long as you went to class took good notes and learned the study guides! I never got below a 98 on a test. The lab is harder but if you study will do well
Madsen is a great professor and is passionate about what he teaches. Although I did not like the class I took with him (because it was taught by another professor as well), Madsen tried to make the class interesting. He is VERY helpful! You can go to him with any problems, and he will try to help. I look forward to taking other classes with him!!
Madsen is awesome. He posts slides online so if you don't want to go to class you do not have to, he is an amazing professor and just as cool of a person. You don't even have to buy the textbook. Labs get harder and harder as the weeks go on.
A great teacher, learned a lot from him he also kept a general class interesting
Never went to class. Fill out the study guide and memorize it and you will get an A. Loved the class. Great professor.
I really liked Madsen. took him for winter session with no interest whatsoever in geology but the course was required. Now that my major is changed and taking this class was irrelevant - im still glad i took it..i learned a lot. You need to study for tests but he provides useful study guides and powerpoints
Really interesting class to take, had very little interest before class, but he makes it fun and interesting to learn. Tests are pretty easy, just go over the study guide a few times. Lab's can be tough, but get easier as course goes on.
for a 4 credit class, the amount of work that was required to get at least a b+ was appropriate. the material he taught was super easy, but watch out because he tries to trick you sometimes on the exams! really funny and made class entertaining. labs were a piece of cake. definitely recommend him!
All of the powerpoints are online so I never went to class since it dragged on, seemingly forever. The study guides are long and boring. Madsen makes the material more interesting, but it's still boring. You definitely need to know your stuff for exams - his questions on them are annoying. I recommend it if you're interested in the subject.
There is no need to buy any books for this class. There is also no need to attend class. All of his powerpoints are online and he uses UD Capture so you can watch the lectures from anywhere. To study, read through the powerpoints very carefully. He asks for small details (almost in a standardized test sort of way) which gets very tricky.
Fairly easy, straightforward professor. The powerpoints are online so you really don't need to go to class. Just know the questions in the study guide pretty well and you should be fine. But still study. Don't get the textbook but the lab book is somewhat useful.
Madsen is great. I took this as group D w/ lab. Lectures are on UDCapture. He also gives sample exams and study guides which makes it very hard to get lower than an 85 if you pay any attention in lecture. Lab is low stress, got out early a lot. Good class to take to get a solid grade in a 4 credit class, a 90 = A!
Easy class with not too much studying. Available on course capture so attendance is not required. Would take again
Great way to knock out the Group D with lab. Tests can trip you up a bit, but aren't too bad. Labs boost your grade.
This man is perfect in every way. Take his classes any chance that you get. You won't be disappointed!
Madsen is the man. Geology is boring but this guy knows his stuff and had funny stories he tells. Class on UDcapture. Labs are easy (be ready to memorize rocks though) Study guides he posts cover everything on an exam. One of the easy lab classes at UD
Dr. Madsen is a great professor! He is very accessible outside of class and there to help with any problems. He is very clear and good at explaining things. Course capture is used, so attendance is not mandatory, but going to lecture is still helpful. I would definitely recommend him!
He is a great teacher and his lectures are interesting. His exams are a bit tricky. He asks a lot of questions on the exams that are more like word problems. So be prepared to know the concepts inside and out. He records his lectures on UD Capture, but he does a lot of explaining with his hands, and that doesn't show on the web.
He is a really good guy, funny in class, and a great teacher. He wants all his students to pass and will give them extra opportunities at the end to get the grade up. I would definitely take a class taught by him.
Good teacher, just boring material
His exams are full of word problems so you have to know the material really well. Lots of memorization and critical thinking. His lectures are interesting and the material is interesting
He turned this class into the most interesting class I've ever taken. He is very passionate, and had such a wealth of knowledge. Definitely considering taking another one of his classes down the road.
I took this class to fulfill my science requirement and found it pretty easy. There are no clicker questions and it was course capture, so I pretty much never went to class. Just fill out his study guide and do the practice test and you'll do fine. Don't waste your money on the textbook, you'll never use it.
Professor Madsen is the man! He is so understanding and flexible. He allows extra help on exams if you reach out to him and he truly cares about student success.
Such a nice professor, helps you out if you are struggling, and also gives you the opportunity to get points back on your exams if you feel you didn't too well. I feel like he gives answers to the exams too. No need to get the textbook, just attend class, fill out the study guide, do the practice exam, and you should be fine! Def Recommend!
Professor Madsen is the best! He wants all of his students to succeed. Go to office hours!!
I'll admit that there were days when I didn't go to class. But when I did, I enjoyed Madsen's lectures. He makes jokes here and there and simplifies things so every major understands the information. Labs aren't too tricky--study a bit more than I did and I'm sure you'll get at least a B+! Study guides and practice exams help A LOT.
Professor Madsen is an amazing man. He is always willing to help and wants his students to succeed. He is available outside of class whenever you need. If you study the study guide and take the practice exam, you will get an A in this class. The lecture notes are on UD Capture and he posts the slides online.
Dr. Madsen was an awesome professor. Super knowledgeable about geology, and his lectures are pretty fun too. He's very accessible and does care about his students doing well, even in such a large lecture.
I took this as an easy lab requirement but it ended up being way harder than I was expecting. Exams and lab are all memorization of useless information. Madsen wasn't bad though. Take GEOL105 instead
Dr. Madsen was fantastic. If you're in the honors program, take him for Colloquium. His lectures are interesting, he is an easy grader, and he cares about his students. I hear that he is great for Geology as well. Definitely go with Madsen if you can. Easiest A I've earned in college so far.
His tests are based on your memory. You need to memorize everything is required. Average teacher.
So here's the deal: Madsen is dope but this class is not if you're taking it as a lab requirement. An immense amount of material. Take 105 instead!! But madsen rocks and is helpful and caring!
Even if you struggle in madness class if you take time to meet with him he will find ways to boost your grade! not the easy A I thought it would be but not extremely challenging either
He is an amazing lecturer. He is remarkably organized and uploads the slides prior to the lecture, so during class you can really absorb what he is saying instead of trying to write everything down. His grading scale is fair and his exams are well made. He provides a study guide so you know which topics you may be tested on. Best prof ever!
Madsen is the best. Cares about his students. An A in his class is an 87! Gives extra credit opportunities if you show you care about his class and want to do well. Not a hard course at all, just make sure to know his slides inside and out. Never went to class, didn't buy the textbook, and still did well in his class. Would take Madsen again!
One of the easiest classes I've taken at UD. 3 essays, 3 group projects, clear criteria. If you just do everything you'll get an A no problem. His lectures are interesting and I liked learning the material. If you have to take an honors colloquium, take Dr. Madsen, you won't regret it.
Highly-recommended colloquium! Dr. Madsen is a bright guy who is incredibly passionate about and involved in the energy field. He discussed many facets of the energy sector and presented a balanced perspective. The class was very clearly structured. As long as you put in the required work and effort, you'll get a good grade in this class.
If you're taking this for a breadth, it's a little harder than it looks. In-class exams are almost direct reflections of the study guide, so they're somewhat easy, but lab tests are hard! And the only grades are tests, so if you're not a good test taker, this isn't the class for you.
One of the nicest Professors I have ever had. Dr. Madsen is very knowledgable about his subject and cares about his students. If you put in the effort and ask for help he will ensure you pass. He allows test corrections for half points back on one exam. Lectures are boring but worth going to because he mentions things that will be on the exam.
A great guy! He is so kind and allows you to do test corrections on one exam grade that you would like to raise. The material is understandable and he does not try to try trick you in any way on the exams. As long as you do the study guides he posts, you will be prepared . Exams themselves are very fair and he wants everyone to do well! :)
Very cool guy. Lectures aren't necessary but helpful if you go. He posts all his slides on canvas. Super helpful outside of class
Prof. Madsen is the type of professor that demands respect, not because he asks for it, but because he deserves it. My colloquium on nonrenewable & renewable energies was excellent. Do expect to write a few papers, but you have lots of room to write about what you enjoy. I'd take him again in a heartbeat. His canvas can be a little unorganized tho.
The first part of the course is really tough. But he let's you "correct" one of the class exams, where you get back half of the points you lost by basically not doing much work. After that it's really easy. You don't have to even show up. Just make quizlets from the slides and practice exams are almost identical to the actual one. Labs are a pain.
Prof Madsen didn't tell many jokes, but he could be really funny when he did. Any class with 1:15 long lectures will get dry after a while, but Madsen kept his lectures well organized and interesting enough. Easily the best lectures to take notes on I've had. The study guides are also really helpful for the exams.
Ngl, Prof Madsen doesn't make a ton of jokes, but when he does he's hilarious. This is a very lecture heavy class, but I couldn't ask for better lectures to take notes on. They are extremely well organized, and he doesn't ramble on. Just pay attention in class and you'll be fine.
Not a bad class, the professor is nice and lets you correct one exam. The lectures were straightforward and posted online, making it easy to study for exams. Not super exciting, but if you pay attention or look back at the powerpoints, you'll be fine.
Professor Madsen is a nice guy, but his lectures are so boring. This class was more difficult than I expected it to be, but I have to take it for a lab requirement. He also goes very fast on the lectures so I feel I can't keep up. The exams aren't great either. I would not take him again. Also, the lab is really boring and the TAs suck.
Madsen is a funny great guy. Very easy to access outside of class and all of the exams/labs are very straight forward and he gives very helpful study guides. The lectures can get repetitive but he keeps them interesting. awesome and very knowledgeable dude
Prof Madsen has a very dry wit that had the class laughing frequently. He is a very monotone speaker, so if you have trouble following heavy lecture classes with that kind of oration, don't take him. Otherwise, he is very clear with his expectations and provides his students with ample materials to succeed. I would recommend this class.
Prof Madsen has a great sense of humor that keeps the class engaged. Though lectures can be monotonous, he provides ample materials to succeed. unstuckstudy was a huge help for study prep alongside the textbook.
