Very unhelpful during office hours and very interesting lectures. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
If you need to take a lab, Manubay is alright. It's a class you just have to get through. Do the work, show up to class, and take good notes. You have to work a little for an A, but it's manageable. Be prepared, his test questions (all multiple choice) are much more difficult than the clicker questions.
The class is composed of a midterm, final, 6 group activities for extra credit and a project. The exams are straight from the lectures which makes it easy to study. The project is a lot of points so make sure you do a good job. If you go to class you will be fine!
My biggest bone to pick was the fact that all of us registered for a different professor with great reviews, walked into class the first day, and it was this guy I had never heard of. His exams were actually way too difficult, the labs were a little more involved than necessary, but the extra credit from group work helps make things up. I'd avoid.
Manubay is a smart, funny guy; but, he didn't create the class materials and his lectures don't line up with what the labs consist of. There is a pre- and postquiz for every lab and group projects in lecture which all create a lot of busy work to do outside of class - not really related to the tests. Extra credit balances hard test questions.
I took both BISC 1005 and 1006 with Professor Manubay and I would highly recommend! Yes the class can get dry sometimes, but I feel like he actually cares about the overall topic. Both classes overlap in content which focuses mostly on high school-level biology. The labs each week are tedious, but if you have a good TA they are not that bad.
If you took basic bio in high school you'll be fine. He makes you do these group activities throughout the semester which are basically group quizzes. Not too bad if you have a good group. Main writing assignment was fine. Lab reeeeeally depends on which TA you have -- mine was awful.
Took this as an online course because COVID, no lockdown browsers. Don't buy the book, everything is reiterated in lecture. Lots of group work during synchronous lecture. Takes a long time to grade because the class is huge.
Nice person but his course is poorly adapted to the online environment. Labs are expensive and time consuming. They also don't match up with the pre-recorded lectures he plays in class. Wait and take this course in person if possible.
He's just the lecturer for BISC1005; Professor Scully is the one who structured the course. He's got a dry sense of humor which makes for some entertaining sly remarks during lecture.
If you need a need an easy science credit TAKE A COURSE WITH DR. MANUBAY. I don't understand all of the hate. He isn't going to change your life or anything, but he has clear grading requirements and if you do the work you will probably get an A. Don't bother reading/buying the textbook. Online labs are annoying but you get through it lol.
Dr. Manubay wasn't very in touch with his students and gave pretty dull lectures. The labs were also dull and the TAs were ok. That being said, the class itself wasn't too difficult online because there were no exams. There was a semester-long project, lab quizzes, lab work, and group quizzes (graded strictly). OK class to take for the gpac req.
Dr. Manubay is a very kind and intelligent professor! His class has a lab section, which depends on which TA you have, mine was very nice. The labs are VERY tedious and take quite a long time, and the grading is a bit confusing. The class is not incredibly easy or difficult, kind of an in-between. I am not a science person but took it for credit.
This class was great for an intro to bio class needed for GPAC. Manubay's grading criteria was weird and kind of unclear. There were no tests, only form questions, quizzes and group quizzes. It was a solid choice. Class was actually interesting and only 50 mins long. Labs were long but easy to do. Follow instructions perfectly and you will do fine!
Good professor but his TA was a super heavy grader and some assignments were wayyyyy too intense for a non-major science class. Still an easy class to take for that science requirement but be prepared to work hard on some very random specific assignments. Lab can get intense too.
Dr. Manubay is super enthusiastic about biology and willing to explain concepts in-depth. The assignments are all easy if you put in a little bit of effort and pay attention in class. He's super accomodating and this is definitely one of the best lab sciences to take for your gen-ed credit, and even better if you took biology in high school.
Mixed feelings about this class. Honestly depends on the TA you have, I had a great lab TA but our lecture TA was a really harsh grader and often took points off for silly things. Class is easy enough and there are lots of opportunities to do well, exams arent make or break and Manubay builds in extra credit/makes participation worth a lot.
Very engaging lectures and genuinely cares about teaching students. Every expectation regarding the course was clearly outlined in the syllabus and was repeated in lectures. Exams are somewhat difficult and are based on lectures as well as textbook. All in all mostly he wont be the issue, its usually the lab TAs you have to worry about.
Dr Manubay is a great bio teacher. He knows what hes talking about and is extremely passionate about it. He checks attendance and also has group activities in class so you definitely wont be able to skip this one. The class can be very hard if you slack off, but if you take the labs seriously, its pretty easy to pass with a good grade.
Manubay is passionate about what he teaches and it shows. He's good at explaining the material and his expectations from students are clear. In order to do well though, you have to put the work and the effort in. There's a lot of assignments and quizzes. Lab was the most stressful part of the class - quizzes every week.
Labs assignments are complicated and stressful. Each week we have a post/prequiz. I am taking this course as an elective and I spend WAY MORE TIME on this course than my other major classes.
Prof Manubay himself is great. He's super funny, caring, and passionate. However, theres just way too much material in the course for a non-science major to feasibly learn in one semester. The labs are super hard and the lab TAs aren't sure whats going on.
Overall he was a nice guy. However, content is explained at a very basic level because he tries to teach too much material in such a short time. Each module had 7-8 presentations, each with 30-40 slides. There were about four modules on the midterm, and the final was cumulative.
There are a lot of lab assignments that require a lot of effort. Too much effort for a 3 credit course. The post quizzes for the lab are challenging. Group quizzes are hard if you have a bad assigned group. He is rude when you ask certain questions. He does participation through a poll question via zoom.
Class was so exhausting and such a waste of time. Way too much work for a 3 credit class that was meant to be a GPAC taken by nonbio majors. 30-page labs with complicated instructions that no one could understand combined with lab videos made this so much work. Manubay's a nice guy but just doesn't seem to understand that none of us are bio majors.
Prof Manubay wants students to succeed and provided a lot of extra credit and retests for midterms. Lecture content and exams were manageable. BGA's were easy. On the other hand, lab was far too much work for 3 credit lab. Lab TA's were unhelpful and seemed uninterested, labs were unorganized and very long. Lab grading was inconsistent.
Manubay wasn't bad but wasn't great either. Lectures were boring and it made it hard to go to class, which made the midterm/final harder because he uses specific examples from lecture. However he gave extra credit and is a nice dude. Labs weren't bad either, especially if you had a good TA.
Nice person & very knowledgeable ab his subject. Great communicator/lecturer. Wish this class was just lectures, because I learned more from lectures (and pretty much nothing from labs). Labs for BISC 1006 were useless & insufferable.
Dr. Manubay was alright. I wasn't the biggest fan of his lecture style or exams, but he's a very approachable guy who seems eager to help. Offers online homework modules which are boring and tedious, but are a good grade booster. Beware of the group activities - they are deceivingly difficult.
Professor is nice, class is brutal. Paper notes only no electronics allowed. Provides powerpoints with notes which was helpful. Lab prep and homework is brutal and time consuming, mainly the lab reports. Harder than an intro bio class should be, I pitied the non-STEM majors in there. Class starts and ends exactly on time, not a second later.
I took both BISC 1005/1006 with Manubay and 1006 was more strenuous and not what I expected. The course was heavy on anatomy/physiology even though it is an ecology class. Lots of memorization/recitation of facts. There are better options for GPAC requirements. Between the two courses, 1005 was more enjoyable/applicable to everyday life.
Professor Manubay is resourceful, knowledgeable, and fair to his students. The class is only graded on a few tasks, and all the test material is derived from the lectures. The coursework is manageable, as long as you put in the effort. He is highly accessible, so attend office hours for questions. The labs gradually become better as you go on!
This is straight up a weeding-out class. This class is much more difficult than it has. With lectures being mandatory, the mastering biology HW, BGAs, and lab (which is another beast in itself). There felt like no time to actually digest the material. Although the TAs and Manubay were easily accessible. If you put in the work, you can pass!
Manubay goes very in depth with each topic and expects you to explain examples that he goes over in class. Take thorough notes on all of his lecture slides and write down what he says in class. Study for the group assignments and use the blank group assignments to study for his three tests. Do the Pearson assignments, they help your grade.
Professor Manubay is such a good guy, and you can tell he's smart and passionate about the subject; but the class is very hard. There were two midterms and a final (all multiple choice and short answer) and they were some of the most challenging tests I've taken. Just be prepared to study, study, study. If you put in the work, you'll do fine.
Prof was moody all of the time, exams were extremely challenging, group activities were also challenging and there's weekly hw. However, I think he's one of the better profs at GW because he answers his students' questions, even if some are irrelevant.
is a tough class but him & the TAs were always so helpful in office hours. not really sure why he gets bad reviews. Don't let low scores scare you its curved at the end. Other profs grade based only on smaller & more tests->him its bigger but fewer tests & other things like homework (quizlet=answers) which boosts ur grade. Would take again (i did).
Prof. Manubay is passionate about biology, but his grading system is tough. He looks for VERY specific answers, usually with information from lecture, so it's easy to score low on exams/assignments. The lab grade gets averaged in and there is a curve at the end, so that helps.
Class includes lab, group activities, exams, and homework. Def go to office hours! He looks for very specific answers on the open response so really sit with the material, but overall cool guy.
He only reads the slides, harsh grader, assigned to read the whole book, and only was assessed for 11 of them. He thinks a 75 average is perfect and Lab is the worst, TA's lack interest and mess up your grades because they don't know how to do their job. Studied so hard just to pass, NEVER TAKING HIM AGAIN.
nice guy. can be funny, a bit sarcastic. tries to make the material understandable as best he can but sometimes makes it confusing. lecture goes with the textbook and reading the stuff before class helps make the lectures easier. just like AP bio. exams are to be expected for a hard science class. can be boring. lab sucks
The professor doesn't assign too many assignments for lectures; that being said, it is definitely a class where you need good time management and study for the few assignments you are given (group activities). The lab portion of this class gave a lot more work (writing and quizzes) but I found it to be quite easy + retained a lot more information.
Isn't too bad if required for your major, but don't take if you don't need to. It starts difficult because you are getting used to his structure, but he is consistent. The group assignments are difficult and require specifics, and there is little time to complete them. Pay attention to lecture bc things he says will be on exams but not on slides.
He is so incompetent, his grading style is so not communicated and the tests are on very small information that is hidden in the slides
Professor Manubay is an overall great professor. Students should be aware that BISC 1111 and 1112 are weed-out classes requiring a lot of work. Attending his office hours significantly improved my test scores as he helped me review and understand the group work that is often on his tests. He has a real love for science that fuels his teaching.
The tests were very difficult. I did very well in AP Biology and received a score of 5, but I took this class as part of my pre-medicine track. I did not like this class. Group activities were difficult, and students often scored very low.
Biology with Manubay is a very difficult class that requires extensive studying. However, he is a super nice guy and a very thorough teacher. You will get a quality education from him. I have really grown to enjoy his lectures, and hope I am one day bale to take more classes with him.
The class is hard, but this is too be expected because it is taken for 4 credits. The professor is alright he does a good job offering review opportunities with the TAs but people typically choose not to take advantage of this.
Manubay honestly doesn't deserve the hate he's getting. It is a difficult class, so you need to study a lot, but he is super accessible outside of class and will always answer his emails. Participation matters but it's rounded and there are three group activities. He also curves a lot so if you have a C you'll most likely end with a B or A-.
VERY hard class. Tons of material to look over. Lab is also tons of work but easy to get good grade in if u do it. 3 exams to desegment the material tho. My main issue is the grading is so hard for anything short answer. Feels like you need very specific answers, caused me to get Cs on all group quizzes & exams. Good lectures by Prof!
Very good lecturer, really puts his all into the course and provides good real life examples to help conceptualize some harder topics. He will explain so much to you in office hours and is willing to guide you to improve your scores. Overall if you put in the work you can do fairly well in this course.
Professor Manubay tells you exactly what he will be grading you on at the very beginning of the semester. Definitely take advantage of the iclicker/mastering biology points he offers, do NOT let them go to waste. He is consistent, fair, and very organized. Also his lectures are decently engaging for an intro course as he provides lots of examples.
Manubay's class is DIFFICULT. You may or may not have a mental breakdown trying to complete this course. However, I have learned more from this course than I have from all of my other courses. The main issues are the group activities. The exams are also incredibly hard, with the class average being around a D. Decent teacher & guy overall though.
The tests are difficult and so are the group activities. Make sure to read absolutely everything and go to office hours to make sure you understand everything exactly as the professor explains it. Dr. Manubay is good at explaining concepts, but sometimes there is just so much of it. The details and concepts that he says in lectures are important.
The best way to describe Manubay is firm but fair. The class is extremely hard, and unnecessarily so at times, but Manubay wants students to succeed. The tests and GAs are very difficult but can be balanced out by lab and the easy iclicker/homework points. Manubay is also very accessible outside of class and is understanding of whatever comes up.
Be warned, "Aidan Manubay" on here is also him, look at those ratings -- hes so hard and I hated this class-- coming from someone who took AP Biology & passed my AP exam (taking in college bc pre-med doesn't like ap credit as much rip)
Tests are EXTREMELY hard. Studied my a$$ off for this first exam and went in so confident. The girl next to me was crying. Even his multiple choice is impossible. Pray for me for the rest of the semester.
It isn't easy to do well in this class. BUT if you meet with him, meet with your group for group activities outside of class and actually put in work, it will all work out. He wants to help, meet with him outside of office hours one on one and prepare questions. You will do well if he can tell you are putting in effort.
Manubay is using this class as a weave out course so if you are not a STEM major don't take it unless you need to. Tough test and group activities but it gets boosted from lab, homework, and participation points. Everything is weighted the same too. Tests are difficult but just make sure you understand all the material + group activity questions.
I was a Bio major but after taking this class and having to withdraw from it at the end of the semester I decided to switch my major. Manubay was terrible, he gets mad at every student for a mistake that one person made. I stopped attending lecture when I realized I was Withdrawing but you can give your clicker to a classmate if you want to skip.
Way too much homework and takes everything way too seriously.
Manubay is a pretty chill guy, sometimes witty. Always willing to talk to you during office hours and answer questions; responds to emails fast. The group assignments will absolutely destroy your grade. Free 200 points from iClicker and Pearson. Exams are extraordinarily difficult, but his GA's host review sessions before each one.
Dr. Manubay is passionate and knowledgeable about his field and that shines through in his lectures. It also goes without say that the group activities and tests aren't particularly easy, so make sure to go through the lecture slides and most importantly the Mastering Biology Dynamic Study Modules, and you'll do great.
He's a great guy, BISC1111 is just a weed-out class so it's extremely difficult--don't take it unless you're STEM or Pre-Med. Study and review every week, because it's a lot to wrap your head around. Exams are incredibly hard, but your grade can be buffed by some other easy points (attendance, HW). Just be prepared to work and go to office hours.
Manubay is over-hated. When I was a freshman, I disliked his course. I'm now a sophomore and I'm returning to say that he is probably one of the best professors you'll have. Advice? Go to office hours. He WANTS you to learn. Start lab reports early, if you are a freshman this class will help you understand how you need to study. Lock in y'all!
I absolutely loved his class, he is an amazing lecturer and very passionate about what he teaches. However, this is a 4 credit class be prepared to do some work on your end but his class really taught me how study.
Professor Manubay was an amazing and straight forward professor. If you want to do well on the tests and group activities make sure you go over the lecture notes and utilize Pearson tools like the videos and practice questions.
He's very over hated. It's very clear what he expects of students and what you need to do in order to get a good grade. Office hours and exam review sessions make it very obvious what questions will be on the free response sections of the tests. You just need to understand how he formats the tests to do good on them. Key is to memorize
Biology is tough, but Professor Manubay is a great professor. Very helpful during office hours. Group Activities (like group tests) happen throughout the semester. 2 unit exams, final isn't cumulative. Exams are hard but doable if you study and attend TA reviews. Labs have 2 reports and short pre/post quizzes. No complaints!
He is an amazing professor! He teaches really well, and is very knowledgeable. The exams are quite hard however, but if you thoroughly read through the notes and engage with the material/textbook you should be fine. Definitely take him as a prof for the Bio classes!
After having Manubay for BISC 1111 and almost finishing his BISC 1112 course, I will say he's pretty cool. At first, a lot of people will tend to make assumptions or say that he's scary, but to be honest, this man is just trying to help you pass. As long as you go to lecture, participate, engage with the material and ask questions, you will be fine
Manubay is a great guy, he cares. However, if you don't NEED this class...DO NOT TAKE It. Tests are actually still haunting me and he is an extremely tough grader. Some enjoy his labs. I found it terrifying. It's a v hard class, do it if ur pre med. You get stuck with a bad group on group assigment? Good Luck. Your grade is done.
This is a very content-heavy course. He wants you to use what he puts in the lectures verbatim. First 2 exams, I got a A- on both after extensive slide studying. Group activities are very hit or miss. You need to pray that you get into a productive group, or you will need to do a lot more work. Be ready to put in the work and go to office hours.
Just make sure you end up with a good GA group. If you don't, fix that ASAP. He is fine, very enthusiastic and knowledgable. Overall, you actually have to study but if you listen to the lectures its not that hard. Do good in the lab - it's easy points
The professor himself is alright- knowledgeable, caring. The group projects are graded harshly, and if you get a bad group you're screwed. Exams are manageable, term memorization for the mcqs and you can review the group projects (5 saqs each) during office hours to study for the saqs. Lab is easy points, so try to do well in it
This is a hard class, but Manubay makes it EXTREMELY clear what is expected of you. It is all on you to study way harder than you believed was necessary. Study and memorize everything. Do well in lab, it can boost your grade. But Manubay himself was pretty understanding and gave engaging lectures. Don't take this class if you're not a STEM major.
I've never really had interest in science until college. Dr. Manubay does not deserve all of this negative criticism. He is consistent, accessible, humorous, and passionate. Most people here are just bitter that the class is hard and can't take accountability, so they just blame him. He made labs very fun and engaging as well! GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Learn Dr. Manubay's style early on and you'll be the most successful in class. He has a lot of great information in his lectures but when it comes to tests I found that your grade was based on your ability to recite back what he is thinking (nearly word for word) rather than being able to learn the material and apply it. T
Manubay is a nice professor, but treats the class a bit harder than an intro bio class should be. I took this as a CS major for a science requirement and got by fine putting in very little effort, didn't enjoy the class whatsoever though.
Lab has lots of quizzes pre and post. Attendance is mandatory. No opportunity for extra credit, he is hust too full of himself, if he is wrong and you point it out you're a target from then on. Ask him a hard question asks you to come to his office hours, uses complex vocabulary to explain things (ubiquitous) for no reason. Awful individual.
I've taken both BISC 1111 and BISC 1112 with Dr. Manubay two years ago. I'm not going to lie, his course is HARD. His grading is strict, and requires a lot of memorization. Group quizzes are tough, and the lab notebook requirements are annoying. However, I can now say that his courses have indeed prepared me for my upper level biology courses.
Awful, he actually wants you to fail and classifies it as a weed-out class. He's horrible, and his class is so hard, with lots of reading/work. Extremely lecture-heavy and difficult.
Just be ready to work a wholeeeeeee lot
this man makes it near impossible to get anything higher than a C. This guy is so uptight about grading our exams didn't average over 50%. He gives no curves, no extra credit, and even though he is pretty available outside of class, he makes no sense and makes you feel like you're unwelcome. Avoid at all costs.
eached out to him multiple time for help and understanding and he was not helpful whatsoever. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR unless you want to fail every test and tank your GPA.
I came into this class with an academic scholarship and I am leaving this class financially stressed because I cannot afford school without it. I have (currently and in the past) receives A- and A's on all my upper division courses and will likely fail this class. It's not the material, It's unclear test/homework questions and unfair grading.
Unfortunately I like many pre-health students had to take his course but I respect him for all he has done and all he has done but his course is impossible. I understand the point of weed-out classes but he takes it to a whole other level and I went to his office hours once and never again since I felt I was being talked down to rather than taught.
I really do not like him as a professor I get a condecending attitude when I ask a question, he does not return our unnecessarily hard exams, he lets us see the exams at his poorly timed office hours and then is mad that no one goes even though he only lets 10 people in at a time. Everyone that says they like him just kisses his ass and worship him
Exams are overly difficult and require a lot of memorization. He just reads off the slides, which aren't too difficult; however, the exam questions are much harder than the practice questions or slides shown in class. For the group activities, most groups do terrible due to him being a harsh grader and time constraints.
Professor Manubay just reads off the slideshow. Exam questions were harder than the practice questions. Most of the open-ended questions were from the group activities. For group activities, he was a very strict grader and most groups got a very low score every time. He will get sidetracked talking about ants a lot.
Dr. Manubay is very knowledgeable, but his class is way too difficult for just an introductory class. There are a total of 3 exams throughout the course, and each of them are really difficult. His TA's grade them very harshly, on top of that. There are also group activities, which they grade harshly too.
Much harder than what I expected an intro bio class to be like. Exams were unnecessarily difficult and nearly impossible to complete on time since the grading criteria are so specific that you have to nearly write down everything about the topic for the written questions to have some hope of receiving credit....Good luck!! :(
This class was so hard. so much homework and if you miss a class or two you'll be pretty lost. The test are so hard because of the massive points of the short response. It's not the worst class I've ever taken but it takes so much effort to get a good score on the test. You'll probably need to study for minimum 4 hours the day before a test.
Can GWU hurry up and make other professors teach this course. He makes this course way harder than it needs to be. I used to enjoy science but he's genuinely making me hate it and is making me question my life choices. He is super super condescending and is the definition of taking his job to seriously. like bro...
The material covered is not particularly difficult, its just that the test require you to recite his 200+ lecture slides virtually word for word. Its not only about how smart you are or how apt you are, its about how much work you put in. Grading is ruthless. The answer key itself wouldn't get full points on the test. Work hard and RIDE THE CURVE.
I'm not paying GWU $90,000 to feel unwelcome, shamed, and treated like a 7-year-old in I am here to learn. I shouldn't be taught by someone who clearly does not care for me as a student or my future. I do not care how many things he runs here at GWU, the number of people who actually dispise him and his attitude is clear and very apparent. Fire him
Really bad
Today was the last day and I genuinely saw the light for the first time in forever. Lectures=ego rituals, students are his sacrifices. His smug little smile has appeared in my nightmares multiple times. Seems to take pleasure in suffering… rude…DO NOT TAKE AS A GEN ED…must trade your soul for a good grade…cooked if you: have a life, bad GA group
I enjoyed Manubay, although he was hard. Don't skip class because you will be lost. Once you learn the structure of his tests, you will be fine. GO TO EXAM REVIEWS and also exam viewing to get some points back!!!! There is a lot of memorization needed for this course. Group activities can be bad with a bad group. Every point matters!!!!
Prof. Manubay WANTS you to do well, you just have to take advantage of everything he provides: go to the office hours/test review sessions and ask questions in class if you are confused! Unfortunately bio is a subject you HAVE to memorize stuff for, but his slides and expectations are clear and will help you do well on tests and group activities.
Do not take him for general ed. The content isn't hard but if you dont memorize this lectures (not lecture slides, lectures) word for word the tests will be imposible. The answer key is so specific and it HAS to be followed word for word. The labs are so much work for intro bio as well. First two exams didn't average over 67% for the whole class.
