the pretest reviews bluntly tell exactly what is on the tests
somewhat difficult for an easy math. Worthless information.

The worst teacher I have ever had, a boring **** that can't teach
What the heck were we talking about? Nothing in this class made sense!!!
Maybe its just me but I thought 103 should be easy?!? Yeah, with him, it
impossible teacher + boring subject = impossible class. DO NOT TAKE!
Absolutely horrible teacher, Not approachable at all. One of the worst at JMU.
I wouldn't take him again in a million years. Stay away from his class.
do not take this class, this guy is terrible, nothing makes sense at all!
Don't take this class if you are trying to keep a high GPA. It won't happen!!!!
INCREDIBLY difficult to understand, boring, made a simple class very hard!
DO NOT ever take this class with him, without a doubt the WORST teacher ever,
TERRIBLE... I don't know how he made such a supposedly easy course so DIFFICULT!
DO NOT TAKE! Supposed to be an easy class, but taught in complicated way!!
More conceptual than practical, hard tests, but very enthusiastic/interesting

Not one doubt in my mind, the worst teacher at JMU
class started with 40...only 8 showed up at the final...only they could pass
Gave me a D, raised another students from a D to a B without merit
By far the worst professor ever. Does not clearly explain topics. Very Confusing.
I am not good at math and I thought this would be an easy course. I was very wrong. Only grades are tests there's no extra credit. I managed to pull a B but only because I studied ridiculously hard for the last 2 tests.
THE FUNNIEST MAN ALIVE! The class sucks, it's boring as hell and is probably the strangest math course ever created, but he is a riot. Very strange, indeed.
not a nice man. kind of sounds like christopher walken, if you're into that kind of thing. also, kind of a jerk. the class is REALLY hard; the first thing you do is quadratic equations... the way the greeks and babylonians did it. horrible.
Worst Professor I have ever had. I would not wish him or his class on my worst enemy.
He is hard...but he is nice and helpful, and motivated about math, Good Teacher
PLEASE DONT TAKE HIM! PLEASE.. he is absolutely the least helpful, most intimidating, horrible professor. He makes no sense, his class is so boring, and he just overall sucks. Do yourself a favor and don't take him unless you are into teaching yourself.
he is boring but he constantly reviews what he has already taught and moves at a good pace not too fast or slow. he is always willing to help you and wants everyone to suceed. and he tells you exactly what you will be tested on.
very odd guy....class isnt too bad..not much outside work, he's very unclear and class is pointless...teach yourself the lesson
The nicest man ever. So helpful. Explained a whole lecture that I had to miss later, in his office. Tons of extra credit "quizes." I hate math, but I loved the ancient geometry we learned. He explains everything in great detail. Gets passio
Great teacher, outlines notes well. Good explanations and nice guy overall
marafino is a cool guy. he gives lots of extra credit if you do your homework, enough to give you an A on a test if you didn't take it.
Marafino has offered over 80 extra credit points this semester with more to come and the class is only out of 500 points, so that is like 15 points added on to your final grade. Outlines tests nicely, and has an easy grading scale...40 for a D, 60 for C.
One of the best professor I've ever had. Lectures are clear and descriptive. He truly wants you to succeed and gives you the opportunity. He makes a class that most would consider booring, funny and lively. I wish all professors were like him.
This class is hell. Obviously a brillant guy, but can't teach to save his life. Please don't take his class. Run away while you still can!!!
he definitely knows his stuff, but does not know how to present it effectively. only sign up if youre up for a challenge! hes a nice guy and helpful, but you might as well not go to class and just teach yourself.
Marafino knows the course but not how to teach it. He only has 3 tests and a final. You basically have to teach yourself the material. He teaches different than the textbook.
Let's just put it this way...1/2 our class dropped out. No curves...a really nice and smart man, and willing to help, but just has trouble teaching material well.
ppl say that hes a great teacher for the upper level classes DONT TAKE HIM FOR 205 IF YOU WANT TO LIVE THRU THE SEMESTER A terrible teacher offered my class the w/draw pass option after we all failed the first two tests and half the class already dropped out taking this class is a serious mistake
I wouldn't recommend this if you haven't had a calc class before. But he is a great teacher and really knows his stuff. If you don't understand something, he'll make sure you know it before he moves on. Tests can be hard, but he takes the questions directly from homework. Not too bad of a class.
I hate him, i took him 3 years ago and i still can't believe how much i loathe this man. i am good at math and got a C in his class. one test i got a 100 and the next i got a 50 ... didn't really make sense. hes so unhelpful and doesn't care about his students.
Dr. M is one of the best math professors I've ever had. Don't listen to the Math 205 people, they just were forced to take the class and already despise Math. He makes it easy to succeed in his class, study his outlines (its the test w/o the numbers), come to class, and do the HW for extra credit.
Good teacher, goes really fast though and assigns billions of questions for hw. Plus how interesting can calculus really be?

He is a horrible man, I dropped the first day after he pretty much said he was just there to watch and not help. Screw that, he is getting paid to teach ! So he should do it

I don't like maths, but I like him.If u talk more with him,he's a nice guy.He give tons of extra credits if u do his homework correctly. If u don't do the HW,don't show up in class,it's not wierd u got a D or F.Strongly reconmmand for Asian students. He is the only maths teacher who gives me a lot helps.
He gets really excited about the material... In class he goes over why you solve the problems not nearly enough about HOW to solve the problems. nice guy, hell help you if you go see him during his office hours. Class is going to be difficult, gives a good outline of the test. GO TO WILSON CENTER!! it saved me.
Super nice guy! Always willing to help, all you have to do is ask! Do your homework for extra credit and GO TO CLASS! Tests are made up of examples from class and homework! Make sure you know the test outline!
The best math professor I've ever had. His class is hard but he makes every effort to help students in and out of class. He always makes sure you know his office hours and will arrange ones just for you at the drop of a hat. However, the class is hard, but his homework policy is great, for every problem right, counts as bonus points on tests!!!
NOT an easy class. i took calc in high school and i basically ran off of that. lectures are not very interesting/ clear. hard to understand sometimes. not always clear on how to solve problems. if you do get him go to office hours that's the only thing that will save your grade
This guy is not for you if calculus isn't your strongest subject! Berry or Adams are better choices!
unless you have a good background in calc, go for berry(or take it at another scool).his teaching abilities are limited as are his abilities in time management. his grading policy makes it easy to pass without actually understanding the material. he grades hw and adds points onto your test grades. it is not unusual to get 10 bonus pts on one test.
Great professor! Such a nice guy, gives take-homes and mad extra credit.
There is a reason half the class dropped out. I was an idiot that stayed. NO curves. INSANE amounts of homework. ALL math majors I talked to warned me to stay away. VERY hard class.
Dr. Marifino is awesome! I think that is policy is completely fair, the extra credit encourages you to do your homework while helping you on the tests at the same time. Dont listen to the rating from the people in Math 205, they are just mad that they actually had to think in their class.
There are better teachers.
not a bad teacher. class is fairly easy compared to 236, its just the application of previous concepts in 3D. he makes hw extra credit, 3 tests during the year, and a final. gives study guides with exactly what's on each test/final (question by question). only down side is, he doesnt give +/- grades, so a b+ is definately a b, and maybe even the a-
As someone who isn't good at math, I found Mr. Marafino to be my worst nightmare. Every class was an impromptu lesson and we were never given a syllabus with the assignment/chapter schedule. I was lost very early on. He rushes through problems and his writing is hard to read. He's not one to remember your name or your face.
Very difficult teacher. Gets annoyed when he has to explain things over and over. Not very clear in his teaching. Tests are impossible. Likes to see how many students he can fail. Collects homework and grades it thoroughly. Def. do not take him!!
Best math professor at JMU! Brilliant and incredibly warm and kind. Gives tons of extra credit and an explicit outline of each problem that will be on the test. He really couldn't make it any easier. Even so, you will learn a lot from him.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD.
Insanely hard class. I had never taken calculus before, but I knew ppl who had and got the same grade as I did. For one test I spent 10+ hours studying and still got a D. Even the Wilson helpers could not solve some of his problems that were on the test. I knew the material but he just made the tests way too hard.
HORRIBLE at teaching, but gives us review sheets for tests. Participation not mandatory.
This teacher was impossible. i ended up failing the class, but i didn't feel bad once i had retaken it b/c half of my new class was in marifino's with me the previous semester. if you like doing proofs and axioms like crazy, this is the guy for you.....he mmore proofs and a lot less of numbers and applications of things
He is a bad teacher. If you didn't take calculus in highschool its impossible. He moves so fast, you can't read his handwriting, and his tests are impossible. He just does examples on the board. I am struggling to pass and have to teach myself everything.

Professor Marafino is what you make of him. If you ignore the class, don't attend, and don't do the homework, you will not do well. He can sometimes be a little confusing, and often sounds like Christopher Walken, but if you seek help, ask questions, and are willing to do the work, you will succeed in this class.
His class was not too difficult if you are willing to put time and effort into it. He offers a lot of extra credit points by collecting the homework. Also, his exams were fair by putting questions from the homework on them. If you do your hw, you will earn a good grade for the semester.
Worst teacher i've ever had. Ended the semester with four A's and one D. The D was from Marafino....how does he still have a job?
Calculus is a hard subject and Prof. Marafino makes it more complex than it is. He teaches you to learn concepts rather than math. 5 tests; all are really hard, hw is extra credit Notes are impossible to read. Nice guy. Does not give good extra help. Take this class because grading scale is easy and soo much extra credit. This guy loves math.
don't be intimidated by the first day of class. If you pay attention and do the homework, you will get at least a B. His homework is extra credit and he pulls homework questions that he grades and puts them on the test. i have no idea why ppl would say he is a bad teacher when he isn't!
Good luck. I got A's in 235 and 236 and had this guy last year. I went to the math learning center constantly and still ended up barely pulling a C. He makes the applications in three dimensions way too hard and moves very quickly. My friend said that Pruett's class wasn't bad.
He's a god professor. Very funny. I think most people are looking for an easy calculus class, but those don't really exist unless you're naturally gifted at math. He is very helpful if you just ask questions. Gets very passionate about the subject. I wanted to take 236 from him next semester, but he isn't teaching it.
Marafino is a cool guy and knows what he is talking about but he has a hard time actually teaching students. Quizzes and tests come straight from the homework and you have plenty of chances to get extra credit. Do your homework and ask questions and you will be fine.
Great guy, Great teacher. Handwriting is pretty bad, but other than that he is a good teacher. You will get what you put into this class. Do all your homework and you will be fine. He gives you an outline of exactly what will be on the tests. You get get about 1/4 of your grade in extra credit also.
Marafino is an awesome teacher and a great guy. The effort you put into the class will show. Do the homework and go to class and you will do fine. Homework is extra credit, and he has a great system about adding it to your final grade. Gives you an outline of the test, so there is no surprises. Also he is extremely helpful during office hours.
Best math teacher I've ever had. Calc is never going to be easy, but he explains things really well and is a big help in office hours. You get an outline for each exam, so studying is a breeze. Do your homework because he gives you a point on your test for each problem you get right that he collects. I got 50 ec pts. Do the hw, go to class, easy A.
I am taking complex variables with Dr. Marafino. the worst professor I have ever had. The material is not hard, but his grading style makes impossible. It does not matter if you get the question right, if he thinks there is a better way to do it he will slam you. comments he gives on homework consist of "why?" then he does the same thing in class.
Do not take this class with Marafino. Hold out for Pruett teaching it. Our whole group hates him. He gave us a C on our homework, then showed us exactly how we did it when explaining it to the class. All our groupmates are giving him a rating here.
If you work your butt off, you will still end up with a D, unless he likes you. He gives grades based on "how he thinks you are doing", right answers get points off if you "did it the wrong way", but he will never tell you which way is the "right way" until you get your paper. And when you ask questions he is very superior sounding. Don't take him!
There are better professors than him who make it easier to understand the material, because calculus is hard--there'e no way around how hard it is. If you're registered for the class, get ready to find a tutor (they're at Roop Hall) to help. He's unnecessarily tough.
He has the worst handwriting ever. go buy glasses for this class. his notes are exactly like the book so they're not much help. hw is extra credit but is really hard and he doesn't go over it much. when he does collect hw its the 3 hardest questions from each section. enjoy!
calc III is a hard class no getting around it. Marafino's teaching style is you learn it on your own then come to class and review/refine what you learned. Lots of independent book work needs to be done. There are easier teachers than him to take for this course. Overall i don't recommend him, he's poor but not horrible.
Absolutely terrible professor. I have a 3.9 GPA and I was FAILING this guy's class! He is extremely rude and does not clarify anything he teaches. Expects students to teach themselves and is condescending when you ask questions or make suggestions. Takes an easy class and makes it impossible to pass. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He is AWFUL. There's a quiz every Friday, and he only gives 10 minutes for each quiz so if your'e a slow thinker you WILL fail. Takes off for non completion. Expects you to teach yourself. 103 is a worthless class that teaches out of date ways to solve problems. He cant explain things clearly. Take something else.
He just failed me on a quiz because i didnt put the middle name of a mathematician. The MIDDLE name. He's terrible.
The class is hard but he's a good teacher. Make sure you look through the chapter being discussed before class so you know what he's talking about. He has awful handwriting and his quiz questions are way harder than any examples he does. Requires a lot of outside work but a B or A is possible. Go to the PASS sessions!!! They will save your life!!!
He was incredibly disrespectful to me in class and was not good at preparing students for the tests and quizzes. Avoid him by all means!
I am a sports management major and took it as a gen ed. Thought it looked interesting but became a monster. Put in way too much time to fail and then drop. He works too fast and goes too in-depth with non relevant material. Find a better teacher! Do not waste your time.
Going into this class I thought that it would be easy. I was wrong.. He requires you to remember every little thing and takes off points for TINY mistakes. He's incredibly rude if you do not know or understand what you are doing.
I'm awful at math and can honestly say that this is not a hard class. The professor can be unfair at times but he literally writes out what every question will look like on the study guide for the exams. He does take off for tiny little errors, but if you go to class and study your notes there's no reason why you wouldn't get at least a B!
Marafino is more of a History buff than a Math buff. He teaches you the Mesopotamian way of doing the Math problems, instead of the way you've learned your whole life. Definitely would not recommend. He does not help you and makes things very confusing.
This class is said to be the easiest math class offered but it's definitely a challenge. The class revolves around the history of Mathematics all the way back to the way the Babylonians solved math problems. The problems you learn how to solve are useless and overcomplicated. He goes pretty fast and it can be easy to miss a step and fall behind.
He's a pretty goofy guy but his teaching style is pretty clear and tells you what he wants. Follow the rubric for lab reports and pay attention to his lectures, he'll emphasize test materials. Really understand the labs where you have to identify things for practicals. Tough testsquizzes but nothing you can't really study for.
Can't believe I'm about to say this, but he actually made BIO lab fun (sometimes). It's not an easy class, but an A is 100% achievable. Always willing to help, and is very flexible. Strongly recommend him.
John Marafino seems to be a very smart guy and really interested about the subject. He doesn't give a calendar which can be really annoying but is good about making assignments clear.
Fantastic teacher. Is great at explaining all the concepts and really wants you to understand all of the material. Has a great sense of humor and his lectures during lab are always entertaining though his tests are often tough. Overall, fantastic, could not think of a better person to have taken lab with.
He is super laid back. He doesn't really reply to emails so beware of that. I really enjoyed lab with him. He explains concepts thoroughly and makes sure everyone is on the same page with him. He tells you what you need to know for the test will help you through lab if you're having problems. He is very approachable and I definitely recommend him.
The class itself is very difficult. He's very theoretical minded, so examples aren't normal. The tests were take home and you were allowed to get his help. The class isn't the worst, but you definitely have to work for everything you get. He's not afraid to fail people.
the only grades are 3 tests, one of them being the final. he is not clear and only teaches by writing on chalkboard in chicken scratch handwriting. can not use a calculator at all even a simple one for adding subtracting and multiplication. does not update canvas so have no idea what grade is. if you can teach yourself, take the class.
Marafino is an extremely intelligent mathematician but the way in which he explains the course material is more confusing than it has to be. He's also a goofy sort of guy at times so if you have a sense of humor you'll laugh every now and then. It's a tough class, learning center is a necessity!!!
I took precalc in high school and knew all of the basic skills to do well. Marafino does nothing to help you understand the math. It's all do it yourself homework, so if you do well by reading and teaching yourself you'll be fine. Math isn't my best subject. Dropped this class for a W.
Marafino is the worst Teacher I have ever had. He mumbles into the wall and writes in chicken scratch on the board. If youre taking notes, you will be so far behind you wont understand what's going on, and if you dont take notes you won't remember. He's also disrespectful, when trying to answer a question, he literally laughed at me. Who does that?
People need to understand that this is college level calculus, there isn't a single teacher at JMU that is going to hand out A's for calc, you need to work for it. Take Marafino for his test study guides and partial credit. His study guides will show you the exact types of problems to look for and the partial credit will keep your grade up.
Great teacher, he's so passionate about everything math related and it shows through in his teaching. Quizzes aren't too bad if you study for them and go to his office hours. Pretty lenient grader if you ask me; on two quizzes I got 16/12. He drops the lowest quiz scores you get and averages the rest. If I get the chance to take him again, I will.
You'll mostly be teaching yourself. All he does is recite the textbook to the point where he'd say "And at this point, the author..." I took calculus in high school and knew all the concepts but the questions he gave us tested more of our intense algebra and precalc skills. Your grade is 3 exams 25% each and 10 quizzes that fill the last 25%. AVOID
After receiving a 41 on a test and spending hours in TDU crying because this class was so awful, I dropped it. Grade is 100% tests with extra credit homework, but he collects random questions on the homework and it's always the super hard ones that you usually get wrong. Teaching style is terrible, I find myself staring at the clock. RUN.
Only grades off of 3 tests including the final. He goes so fast and you can barely read his handwriting on the board. Curves some tests, but even with a curve the average grade is 65. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Attendance isn't mandatory, so if you're good at math, it's nice because you can choose what days you need to show up. There are only 2 exams and a final, so that's a little tricky. He gives you the daily schedule up front, a mock test (that's identical for real test) every time. Not the best teacher, but course style worked well for me.
Genetics lab sucks, but Marafino makes it fun. He does his best to help, though he can get mixed up sometimes, so be patient with him. He tells you exactly what he's looking for in reports and presentations, and he breaks projects down so that you can understand them.
You best hope for this class is know it already, drop it or tutor. Biggest mistake I made here is taking this class
Not the worst prof i've had for math, but he didn't do a great job at explaining things. It involves a lot of self teaching before exams. He does give out practice exams that are the same format as the test but with slightly different problems, which is the only reason why I passed. attendance isnt mandatory but you will fall behind if you skip
if you havent taken any calc courses before i would not recommend him because his lectures are confusing but I found the class easy because he gives you a mock test before every test that is identical to the test just with slightly different numbers. Also if you show all your work and at least set up the problems right, he gives you points.
John makes calc seem like a walk in the park to be honest.
Do not take without taking Calc before. does not really teach just goes through problems super fast. He told us we would go over homework every class and never did. Only has two tests and final that gets graded, no quizzes, attendance, homework credit.
He doesn't really teach, he just goes through problems extremely fast the whole entire class. He says he will go over the homework and never does and there isn't any time in class to ask questions. You only have 3 grades (2 tests and the final). Either drop the class or get a tutor.
it was his first-semester teaching lecture and it showed. He runs through everything very fast and vaguely. The tests he made were unnecessarily hard. He was an alright teacher but he weighed stuff really weird causing grades to drop like crazy
Nice man. First time teaching a lecture class, so it was not the best. Clear lectures and provided printed notes every time. Notes are not good enough to do well on the test. Have to do heavy studying, but it's manageable if you're good at it. Nice man, but needs some work. Stay up with readings and come to class and you'll be ok.
I had him for bio lecture and he was the worst out of all the lecture bios. He is said to be good in chem but he's not meant for bio. His test were way too hard even if you studied and he would mix up the criteria a lot. don't recommend.
Don't take this class. Listen to me. I've taken upper-level CS and Engineering courses. I've been through hard classes. Do not take this class. First exam. 70% of the class got an F. Curve? Nope! This dude doest care. I promise if you take this class, your GPA won't make it. *-> Create your schedule around not taking this professor. <-*
The only reason I liked taking his class, was because attendance is not mandatory. If you've taken calc before, take this class, otherwise you're going to struggle. He gives 2 tests and a final, and that's your grade.
I don't know how to say this without being mean but Marafino is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He would teach you something and then next lecture take it back and teach you something else. You can't do that as a teacher. Nobody i know in this class ever got a good grade on an exam. So awful, save your gpa & DO NOT take him.
Marafino is the bestttt. I would take him again in a heartbeat. He reminds me of Jack Black every time I see him. He's a super funny guy and cares about his profession and knows what he is talking about. He does tend to grade tests in an untimely manner, but other than that his class is engaging and its not the typically bio class.
Marafino has a gift! When I first saw his ratings they were pretty low. I discovered that his ratings didn't give him justice. He always makes class fun and is always willing to help you if you need it. He is also very personable. You will definitely need to put in work but he makes it worth it. He has been one of my favorite professors at JMU.
Good man, but a very difficult course for me personally. Honestly, im just happy I passed. He's easy to get a hold of via email, and will work with you. I would not suggest this class unless you have a strong background in math. Other people in the class who had taken calc in high school thought this course was a breeze. Your grade is 3 tests.
EXTREMELY passionate about Biology. Uses a lot of expression in lectures. Content is heavily textbook based. Available for office hours during the week but not weekends. Super open to feedback on course content. Doesn't check email on weekends. Very helpful during the COVID-19 crisis.
He's really nice and really likes biology. Attendance taken by clicker questions. He's quirky, major board game lover. However, I've realized reading the textbook is very useful for his tests and assignments per chapter. He lectures very quickly and heavily, so textbook helps a lot. He was very helpful through this coronavirus crisis.
Marafino is possibly the worst math professor at JMU. He can only teach by just spitting out information and his practice test are too easy compared to the actual test. Your final grade is based off of 2 tests and a final so if you do poorly on one there's no hope. Will not answer emails and is proud when half of the class fails, overall just rude.
I don't even know where to start. I took two years of calc in high school and aced them. I get here and we used ancient theorems and no modern techniques . Difficult theorems and no sense of what was important. Droning lectures and he just talked nonstop; no discussion or interaction. Very poor class and I'm lucky to have gotten a C. Do not take.
graded only on two tests and the final. He is a smart guy but is very bad at teaching and showing examples.
Your grade is determined by 3 tests. Dr. Marafino gives mock tests a week in advance which are extremely similar to the actual tests. The hw is optional. As long as you understand the mock tests you will be fine. Don't take this class if you don't have a strong math background. He will answer any math questions you have. Lots of outside learning
He is the worst. STAY AWAY!!
