Very enthusiastic! Very obvious he likes what he does.
course easy, his tests irrelevent to material; too much notes; won't answer ques
lectures and tests seem to have no connection but he's is very enthusiastic prof
Notes somewhat confusing and not necessarily linked to test questions
He should stay in his lab...Not at all helpful and seems to thrive on causing undue stress to students!
He obviously likes what he does, but I find the test material not very closely linked or relevant to the lecture material.
He keeps you awake in class, and makes you start to think about things from a scientific stand-point. Good class.
typically very young; like he feels the need to prove his smarts. i can study for weeks, and still feel like i know nothing walking out of the test. needs to focus more on CONCEPTS rather than individual detail. a really nice guy however...
What a cutie! And he's really intelligent and caring, too.
Good first year course. He was very straight forward with his notes and lectures. You really need to study for exam though.
very helpful, answers emails right away and very understanding. let me re-take my final exam after i missed it. notes are not bad but you really need to study hard.
Very clear and interesting
Boring class. Seems that he really knows what he's talking about but the way he teaches is just too detailed. Anyhow, he's pretty outgoing and helpful.
Very boring professor. Very boring indeed.
Boring class...(mayb due to the material??).u hardly hv to go for classes;juz print the notes n memorize them!! He replies emails very promptly and is helpful too. Final exam was fair. Experiments were super-boring.
Very boring guy. very boring class. very poor professor.
When he says to read your class notes for studying exams...read your textbooks instead. You'll have better chances at getting better grades!
He is very clear and if you really know the class notes (which he posts online) inside and out, you can do really well without reading the text. The practise q's for the exams are really worth doing, those q's showed up often on exams.
Really nice guy. I hate bio, but he made the course easy to understand. Had the bookstore print his powerpoint notes and sell for $10, which was a lifesaver - far cheaper than text, and hardly had to take notes in class!
Excellent professor made the subject more interesting. If you study you should get a good grade.
Great prof. Loves Larson/Far Side stuff. Very clear, but he likes to make you think on the tests. Make sure to ask questions and don't miss his lectures. His notes are most important. For the most part you don't need the textbook.
great teacher, loads of fun. he is very interested in what he is teaching. Paying attention in class helps, you just need to review ur notes and read through the text books and ur pretty much guaranteed a good mark!! he even tells you WHAT to study! he is so awesome!
Awesome professor. He is very friendly and likes to joke around which makes the class more enjoyable. Advises you on what to study for the exams. Just make sure you know the material in the notes and you'll do fine in this course.
Hard to understand what is important in the notes and what is useless. he goes off on quite a few tangents and you never know if they are relevant or not! just take everything down in class and you might be alright.
Pleasant and quirky. Material is easy, but powerpoint notes are incomplete with graphs that need explaining - make sure you attend lecture for clarification. Lab assignments were not cut and dry q&a type - put thought and effort into reports and it's an easy 15% of your grade. Exam was on general concepts and pretty straightforward. Decent overall.
Excellent prof. Very enthusiastic and clear lecturer. A little bit slow on getting reports back but I'm sure he has a lot of students. Feedback on lab reports very useful. Haven't had his exam yet, however I'm expecting it to be challenging yet fair. Really enjoyed his class!
For my first year in uni, I don't think he's that bad
Fast pace. Hard to stay concentrated for the entire class. Semi-easy but a lot of memorization. A lot, means more than a lot in these case.
A little bit boring.
I thought he was great! Had his notes on JUMP. Had practise tests and revision charts. Gave back the Midterms. Highly recommend him!!
He's great. brb.
He's a funny guy but the exams seem to be completely irrelevant to the course material, he over complicates the course for what it is.
Best prof Ive ever had. Hes loud, clear, passionate, intelligent, funny and the exams correlated well to what he goes over. The textbook is absolutely wonderful, well written and interesting. I read it on my time off hehe. Recommend.
He's over qualified to teach this class and it shows in his lectures. Hes bored and rushes through material; nice guy but he needs to be teaching grad students. Exam questions are pulled right from the practice exams and are not thought provoking just tricky. Why would you use double negatives and admit u like tricking students? Took it as a 2nd yr
Such a good teacher. all his notes are on JUMP, he is clear, never veers off topic and tries to keep things easy to understand and interesting (he has a creature of the day). He pulls questions for midterms right off the practice exams- so easy! easy to approach and good lectures.
Clear and entertaining. gives out practice exams and as long as you study hard, you'll do fine. he obviously knows his stuff and does an interesting "dr.markham's creature of the day" every lecture. all around good prof.
His notes are well done, hes very informative and well spoken but hes seems to be lacking interest in the course. Exams are tricky because he uses double negative and 'most right' not my favourite but not the worst
The exam was tricky but if you study from the powerpoints you will do fine. His exams were based off of the class notes and not the textbook so that was great. He doesn't seem very approachable in person. But you could always email him if you need too.
Course followed PowerPoints word for word. Exams were very tricky, definitely written above the courses level IMO. Exams also cover lots of specifics, would have liked to see more Q's pertaining to the understanding principles, rather than little facts covered in notes. Not very approachable, won't even make eye contact while talking face to face.
lectures are boring and follow powerpoint slides pretty much word for word. midterm exams were reasonable, but final was very hard. was unhelpful and rude when e-mailed.
I thought his lectures were very well done, just study really hard from his notes and use the textbook only if you are lost in a subject. His exams are very tricky so study hard and use his practise exams he takes questions from them a lot!
Attendance to this class is key. He says there is no need to use the textbook but you defiantly need to. I found it helpful to record his lectures as he talks really fast and there is a lot of information to know
Excellent professor! He explains concepts very nicely and makes things as simple as possible. He makes the classes fun by having a "creature of the day". His notes are well organized and they are all posted online at the beginning of the course. The only negative part of this course was that 100% of the grade was from multiple choice questions.
Horrible prof. Doesn't give clear explanations in lectures and questions on exams are worded poorly. You have to do a lot of work outside of class just to get somewhat of an understanding because the notes are so bad. I'll make sure I don't have this prof again.
Pretty simple class he teaches what he tests, if there was something on one of his tests that no one understood ie under 20% he makes it a bonus mark and removes that question from the general grade
Very nice guy, but his lectures felt like an eternity. His reviews were completely different from the actual midterms, and the final exam had barley anything from either one of the midterms. Studied for weeks & still only ended up with a C in the class. Slides were confusing & unorganized. Must really work outside class to understand.
great prof, has a sense of humour. His powerpoint notes are easy to read as well, very straight forward !
I did not like his teaching method what so ever. Very dry lectures, very confusing and his exams are crazy, honestly questions on material that we had never even seen before. He is funny but I do not recommend him.
Dr. Markham is a very good professor, he is very good at captivating the students and holding attention. He explains concepts well and uses review questions to retain the knowledge. He has a genuine interest in students and is accessible after class and during his office hours . He uses "Dr. Markham's Creature of the Day" to keep students intereste
Unorganized notes and some of the questions he put on the midterms weren't covered in the lecture. So reading the textbook helps! I also recommend watching youtube videos as those helped me more than his lectures in class. Midterms and finals weren't easy so make sure to study.
His exams are tough especially the first midterm! But his final wasn't too bad! And if you did better on the final than one or both of your midterms he took your final exam mark as your final grade which is aweosme! His notes are tough but many questions are from his exam reviews so study those!
I only took this class as a science credit so I wasn't very interested in the topics but his lectures were fairly engaging which kept me focused. His tests were hard but he gives practice exams and takes some of the questions from that.
John Markham is one of my favourite profs ever. Just an all around great guy with an obvious passion for what he teaches and really wants students to do well.
He is a funny professor but had the worst lecture notes I have ever seen. Very disorganized and hard to grasp the concept of easy biology with his teaching. Dropped the class as his midterms were not only hard but ridiculous.
Really good prof, answers questions, and is easy to listen too. Post slides online the first day so really done have to go as he says whats one the slide and tests only whats on the slides. Midterms(two of them) and final are very detailed so you need to know every detail in the notes. Too difficult for a 1000 level course.
Too hard for a 1000 course. My bio 1010 isnt even half as hard as this class. Exam questions try tricking you so the things you think you know you actually dont. Suggest switching to a diff prof but if you like a challenge then go for it.
Awesome lectures. Understand concepts well
I took BIOL 3312 in the Fall, and the prof John goes too fast in his lectures, his midterm was confusing, and his notes are all over the place. Moreover, the Lab portion was a disaster, never got assignment 2 back!
Hes to intelligent to teach this course! Amazing prof but he goes on tangents of detail which only lead to confusion and arent tested on. He is a very fast speaker but so enthusiastic. All slides are very short bullet form sentences. He says not to use the text book but DO. Exams are VERY hard, very meticulous and tricky - ps take 1010 instead
The exams are very confusing and difficult to understand. Some of the questions arent even covered in class. During lectures, he tends to go on unnecessary rants on material that you wont even be tested on.
this class is way too hard for a 1000 course. he goes into alot of detail when not necessary. nothing against the prof, hes a great guy and always willing to answer questions. just dont recommend this course. if you need a science requirement, take literally anything else - this is hard.
very tough midterms and finals, questions are hard to understand and hard to study for. No need to go to class as he just reads straight from slides, easier to teach yourself. would not recommend as a GPA booster. too hard for a 1000 course
SO MUCH ENERGY. He talks really fast, and jumps slides quick. But lectures are interesting, it really helps to attend them. Do the practice tests, he uses the same questions on the real ones. If you're not understanding his iclicker questions, study more, or you won't do well.
All around great guy who really cares about the topics he is teaching. Beware that first midterm is quiet hard but if you pass that you'll be fine for the other midterm and final. Use the practice exams (lots of questions from those on real exam). He uploads the notes before class but the lectures really help to understand them and expand on ideas.
I'd love to take a class with Markham again. I found his slides gave clear criteria on what to study for. The first midterm was harder than the second, and by the final, you feel prepared to do well. I recommend taking this course if you're looking for a science for nursing, there's a lot of cross over with the other health-care related sciences.
he's really monotone, you WILL get bored easily. Online lectures are scrambled and messy. If you already know about grade 12 bio, a lot of the lectures will be familiar. If you did bad on both midterms and do well on the final, that final mark will replace previous midterm marks.
easy class if you are ready to attend each lecture and study outside of class. there are some difficult topics which can be confusing if you have no prior knowledge of biology, but otherwise grade 12 bio will suffice. no lab required with this course and is your grade is determined by 2 midterms (25% each) and a final (50%).
Just no. Dont do it. The material in this class is quite simple, but the way he teaches it isnt. He is all over the place when explaining the material. If you have prior knowledge of biology, you will do fine. But be prepared to study how he asks exam questions and learn to answer in a way you think he wants, not necessarily what seems right.
Overall easy, first midterm is tough, second is pretty easy, final is somewhere in between. If you score over your midterms on the final, he will ignore the lower marks. Study midterms and practice exams, he pulls almost 50% of the material from these questions. Overall a good professor, though his notes were messy and confusing out of the lecture.
Overall good guy but he wasnt so good at explaining things and his notes were messy. You do most of your learning through the text book. If you follow that youll do fine.
Dr Markham has good lectures. They're entertaining and very interesting to listen to. The problem lies with his exams. Sure his lectures are good, but the detail in which he teaches does NOT match the detail he expects on the exam. Our midterm had THREE essay style questions in 2 hours. The way he teaches suits a short answer format, not essays!
Awful. Condescending replies to email questions. Unprofessional. Extremely unhelpful answers to questions and horrible grammar. Assignment instructions make no sense what so ever. I would never take another class with this professor. Lacks communication skills.
One of the worst profs, if you want to pass the class with a good grade READ THE TEXTBOOK. There is a quiz every week and most questions are textbook based. He's basically just there to tell you what subjects to read in the textbook. Most final grades were B-F very few people had A's.
Was originally going to give 3/5. He's a great lecturer and makes the concepts pretty simple and easy to understand. Not a fan of the midterm (3 essays in 2 hours), assignments were okay, but thankfully the final was really easy (1 essay, 5 short answer in 3 hours) which is why I'm giving him a 4/5
I know a lot of his review seem bad on here but he is such a good prof. He cares about his students and you can tell he is passionate about what he teaches. Weekly quizzes, yes but all question were solely of his notes. I dont know why people are complaint about him, there was nothing wrong.
Vague assignment instructions --> Extremely high unrealistic expectations --> ???? ---> 60% and feedback that makes you wonder why they didn't add these things to the initial instructions.
Lectures are all over the place, he just reads off of the lectures without explaining, the assignments are vague and the expectations are not clear at all. The TAs have no idea what they are marking. The midterm was THREE QUESTIONS each requiring 2 PAGE ANSWERS and only 2 hours to complete it. I pity the fool who has to take this course.
This is such a weird class in that it feels like he's not really covering much in the lectures yet he has these wild expectations for exams and assignments. If he lowered his expectations this course would be much better but as it stands, spending 5 minutes talking about a topic and asking a 3 page essay for an exam is stupid.
Dr. Markham has fun lectures and explains things clearly! He gave us quizzes almost every week, but we had plenty of time to do them and they were super easy if you understood the lecture. I didn't think the textbook was necessary, he explained things way simpler than they were in the textbook. The course is easy if you took gr 12 bio.
Had professor Markham for BIOL 3312 fall 2020. It's a 3000 level class so expect it to be difficult, but he is extremely caring and accessible outside of class and during class for questions. Prof Markham had no hesitations helping with the assignments and even pushed back a due date to help students! One of the nicest profs I've had at U of M
My favourite prof this term, the only thing you have to do to do well in his class is pay attention in lecture, and his lectures are very engaging! He likes to share bits of his own interests and obviously finds his own class material interesting! The only annoying thing is that he is really bad with technology
John will talk about his "Favourite Creature of the Day" for 15min out of a 50min class, even if the midterm is less than a week away. john. please. sTOP WITH THE CREATURE OF THE DAY IM BEGGING YOU I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE FROG-FISH OR THE ASPEN TREE, I JUST WANT TO LEARN
Love his lectures but find they prove unhelpful in his exams. He told our class the textbook was not required but many of the questions on the first midterm were not covered in detail within his lecture notes. Very engaging, easy class if you had a good experience in Gr. 12 Biology. I suggest buying the textbook for this class!
John is passionate about what he teaches, but he has been consistently very disorganized throughout the semester. His slides are hard to understand if you miss a lecture because he includes a lot of pictures and not enough words. He told us our midterm would be 90 mins and then only gave us 60 mins to finish without warning. He's just not reliable.
Show up and study well to get good grades
I find John to be a great lecturer. He makes it very easy to get a good grade in his class, if you show up to class, take some notes, and study the slides he uploads, you'll do good. His practice tests are also very helpful. He also makes class more interesting by bringing up the Creature of the Day. 10/10 would recommend
A solid professor. Take notes on the extra things he is saying about the provided lecture slides. Slides are simple and easy to follow IF you show up for his lectures. A good caring prof.
Overall good prof. Lectures are fine if missed, all notes are posted online. Super personable and reasonable guy.
Dr. Markham's lectures were super engaging and easy to follow! His exams were also very fair and reflective of what was covered in class. He clearly is passionate about biology and this shows in his lectures.
He is very good at keeping students interested in the material. Read the textbook for the second midterm because his notes are not very good and it's difficult material. He provides fill-in concept map reviews for each unit which were very useful for the exams.
good class.
Even for students that are academically-driven, this is the professor to never hand out an A+ because you'll never be good enough - seems to grade based on what he feels. Uses many irrelevant examples and, while the course content isn't hard, earning marks in the course is tough. Not overly approachable and if you don't agree with him, you're wrong
This professor was the most unprofessional person I have ever met at U of M. The replies to emails were really condescending and grading was really tough. He doesn't give grades in assesments at all even if you are right but missing details that he thinks he has covered. He can't even meet during office hours most of the time.
his lectures were engaging and he does practice questions that can be on the tests
I loved community ecology with John Markham, this is clearly his specialty. The field trip was fun and working with the data was interesting later in the course. He expects a lot from the second assignment without giving too much support so if you're not familiar with R it may be a bit harder. Memorize figures and concepts for tests!
John Markham is very kind and he cares about his students. His lectures are hard to follow and his PowerPoint is vague so I would recommend coming to class or else you wouldn't understand the slides. He does give practice questions which is very helpful. You need to read the textbook (although it isn't required) to have a better understanding.
Decent prof, recommend reading the textbooks especially for second midterm as his slide are not very detailed and the material is a lot more heavy. Midterm and exams are pretty decent if you study properly
His lectures are very engaging and explains the topics very well. will answer any questions fully, and shows videos and photos of different plants and animals to explain specific topics better
Professor Markham was interesting to listen to in lecture and very knowledgeable about the topics. He provided review material for the exams, which made studying much easier. He was great!
John Markham was a great professor! His lectures were easy to understand and his test don't have any unexpected questions. He includes interesting facts on different plants or animals in each lecture to keep the class engaged. The topics he covers can be found in the textbook, but his tests are only on the topics he talks about during the lecture.
Was the most interesting prof i had for lectures. Made everything super engaging and easy to remember. A lot of the material on tests and exams were/felt like trick questions, so make sure you pay attention to details! Was very easy to talk to, and had sections in lectures with practice questions and iclickers to help with understanding.
Dr. Markham is an excellent choice. His lectures are jam-packed with useful information. He is very kind and will crack a couple of jokes here and there. The tests/exams are very similar to the iClicker questions in class, however, sometimes the questions are tricks, so be careful. if you did well in high school biology, you will do great with him!
Great prof who teaches you exactly what you need to for the exams
John is a good prof. His lecture notes are pretty vague. The first midterm was extremely detailed in comparison to the material provided, although the second midterm and the final were fine and the practice provided was similar. Overall good prof, would take again.
Good prof, be weary of first exam our class average was 10% lower than other bio classes. pay attention in class, study iclicker questions and review notes thoroughly before midterms and exams you will be fine. If you do good in the labs and the iclickers its pretty hard to do poorly.
Great prof. Cares about his students and is super funny. Exams are all similar to in class i clicker questions, and he posts reviews that prepare you. Very knowledgable about biology.
Exams are similar to the practice exam he posts so study those. His slides are very barebones but they do the job so I recommend recording lectures and listening to them to study. John cares about your learning and he's a funny guy and makes lectures worth it. Iclickr questions were worth marks in my course so be in lecture to answer the questions.
