worst experience I've had with a history professor - and I'm a history major. Typical post-modernist gibberish about how terrible and feudal the "old" European system was and how caring, tolerant, and wonderful the "new" is. A class for whiners, not problem solvers. Do not take this class if you wish to learn anything about history - history is not just black and white, onr white and black; it is completely grey, and anyone who thinks otherwise does not have a grip on reality.

This guy is clearly teaching the wrong subject and has a huge problem with staying on task aka following a syllabus.

Terrible teacher! Doesn't not care about his students at all. Never will learn your name after a whole semester! Not clear, lectures don't fit the quizes and exams. Wont answer your questions, tells you to read the book! Very rude and hard to understand. Didn't learn anything and it's not for a lack of trying!!!

DONT TAKE ANY CLASS FROM THIS MAN!!! the WORST teacher i have ever had. my entire life i've gotten As and Bs in history.. i got a D in this idiots class. he just doesn't know how to teach.

This class is a joke. I couldn't even make it trough the whole semester. If you hate america, like the word "paradigm" (which I think he made up) this class is defiantly for you. He makes no sense and can't even give a lecture without his stupid notes. Now I'm behind in credits, but it is better than sitting through one of his classes.

John Martin in not a people person. His disgust with society carries over in his class. Likes to argue and yell. He has the mentality of a teenager. He is about the most worthless teacher I’ve ever taken.

Professor Martin likes to tell tales about his heroic life of being a draft dodger, I think he is too dumb to realize students arn't as dumb as he thinks they are. Very biased. Very dishonest in my opinion, someone in authority should investigate him for academic dishonesty.

His lectures have nothing to do with his quizzes. He expects you to know the entire textbook, but only talks about his opinions of history and "paradigms" all semester long. He is absolutely disrespectful, and assumes you are an idiot. I turned in my hard worked on paper only for him to lose it. If you are in his class, get out before it's too late

The absolute WORST experience I have ever had with a teacher. I would never wish it on anyone to have to endure his class. It is a joke. You'd think Butte College would read through these, or get enough complaints to fire the guy. Don't take his class if you want to be happy. He is cocky, rude, and in my opinion, is not even a teacher.

Ok I will give you a true opinion on this teacher. He is one of the most one sided extremely far left, America hating teachers that I have ever had. If he was teaching during the 1950's he would surely be exiled from the country. Grow a thick skin, do the online quizzes, and complete study packets and you will get an A. 80% is an A in his class.

This teacher is absolutely horrible. On top of buying a $60 book...I have printed an insane amount of papers that we are required to read in his class so when discussion time comes in his class you won't feel like an idiot when he makes you answer a question. Extremely left and a extreme socialist American hating man!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible did I say Horrible?? This man is a nightmare. Seriously. Hates America, hates his students. I am so sick of hearing about consensus/conflict theorists. Doesn't teach out of the book, does his own teaching which is pretty much communism loving. He gives one paper which has tobe 4 1/4 to 5 pages long...really?? 4 1/4 page

I don't like him as a teacher. Yes, his class is easy. Yes, he wants you to pass. However, I want more from a college professor. He constantly brings political theory/opinion into his "lecture" but denies his students the right to object, saying, "its not me, its the historian" yet turns around and agrees with that the 'historian' said.

I go into the class with a good attitude and every day I come out hating him. He gave us a writing assignment two weeks ago with minimal instruction. The essay is due next class and today he tells us what he wants in the essay, directly contradicting his previous (minimal) instructions. This guy is a nightmare.

The first few weeks i thought his style of teaching was unique and interesting, now that i am near the end of the semester i could not find him more annoying. There is no cohesion between the lectures and test, or between the book and the lectures. Not to mention he is convinced all college kids are alcholics and flakes. He wants us to fail.

this man is a horrible teacher and i would highly reccomend NOT taking his course. he does not teach and expects you to do that yourself. we would watch movies at lease once a week that had very little relevance to the class. his tests are difficult,and only half of the material was actually out of the book. even with a tutor this class is hard.

John Martin is the worst Professor ever!! avoid his class! His lectures are all over and has nothing to do with the quizzes and books you read. there's an abundant amount of extra articles he wants you to read. quizzes every week and videos in class once a week. His essay exams are hard and expects you to write a perfect paper or he will return it.

Although Martin is very knowledgeable, his information just does not come out clear. He assigns a lot of reading and randomly posts passages online for us to read (even though they seem to be completely pointless). All I know is if you do the work you'll be fine but it is not easy. Personally don't cause yourself the confusion, choose someone else.

Martin has a tendency of making us teach ourselves, the quizzes and exams are not on what he talks about in class. most of the times he makes us watch history videos that dont help

This teacher is the rudest teacher I've ever had. He seems to have the criticism part down, but instead of being constructive its more destructive. If you take his class, be prepared for smug, sarcastic, and rude comments on your work. For example, the last essay I wrote was returned with comments such as "Are you making this up?!" and "Ugh."

Worst teacher at Butte! Opinionated, easily distracted,n unhelpful, chip on his shoulder! Don't bother with this "teacher", save yourself some trouble!

I only attended this class for one day, and never came back. That should be saying enough. First impression is EVERYTHING, and he does not give a good one. You can tell he hates his job, and even admitted himself that he is rude. I hope he will wake up and realize, this is NOT the proper way to treat his students. Take this class with someone else

DOES NOT COVER MUCH MATERIAL ON TESTS. Make sure to read your textbooks over and over because he won't talk about this stuff in his lectures

As a returning student he has got to be the worst teacher I have had thus far. Rude, hard to understand and wants to argue with the other students. I think he should retire.

When I took this class I thought I was taking a history class, but apparently it was english. Both analysis papers that I wrote I received a low grade with comments on my formatting rather than what was actually in my paper. He is a vey hard grader. I was very confused with how he wanted things on his assignments. Would not recommend to any one.

Wouldnt recommend this class to anyone. You pay to sit in class and he expects students to do all the work at home while treating you like a child in class. Feels like youre in jr high or high school again. Waste of time and money to take his class.

Very difficult, very hard to understand

He is very rude! He doesn't answer any questions, he just says look in your notes and syllabus. He focuses on what he believes and not what the class is actually about, and he refuses to listen to anyone else's opinion. He is a miserable human.

First time I ever considered dropping a class. Explicitly insults the entire class. Very condescending. I normally LOVE history. This guy was teaching his own personal politics not history. Even as someone that shares his political views I was insulted fairly often. Explained simple concepts in the most confusing way possible.

Hands down the absolute worst teacher i've ever had. He doesn't actually teach you anything and is awful at responding to messages on canvas and emails. He wants nothing to do with you and is a complete jerk to kids who are there to get history out the general ed requirements. I would not recommend this guy to the person I hate the most.

Do not take him!! I found it very hard to find the articles he was asking for because of the way he set it up. It took me hours just to find one article within a unit because he had it named something completely random or somewhat unrelated. Ex/ article about Barack Obama. It was named within the unit civil rights. Like playing Wheres Waldo.

I learned little to nothing from his class because of how disorganized it was. His online material is not where he says it is and I have had to spend 20-25 minutes just trying to find the right reading material. His instructions are unclear and when asked questions, he is condescending and doesn't answer the question. Easily the worst class ever

I loved history prior to taking this class but that was stomped out of me by this professor. I have never been so confused when given directions for assignments and he doesn't make himself available to help those in the same boat as me. The lecture doesn't match with the book at all. you are 100% teaching yourself. I've never learned less.

John Martin is one of the worst teachers I've ever had. If you don't like being treated like a child don't take his class. He is condescending, rude and is not there for you if you need help or are confused on an assignment. His canvas is 10x more confusing than it needs to be and just hands you stuff to read and expects you to understand it.

When I took this class a few years ago I loved the material but the professor was rude and his Canvas was very confusing. Very tough grader.

While I love history, I hated this course. The book and other materials can be helpful, but I had to do a lot of outside research at times. Canvas is not easy to navigate & he wants you to use the certain terms in *every* post you make. Tough grader, not organized, & definitely biased. Lots of reading & writing. I don't recommend this class at all.

im not even done with this course and this teacher is AWFUL! i cant believe students like him. I asked him why i received a 0 for an assignment and his EXACT response was "idk maybe because i havent graded it yet?..." HOW RUDE IS THAT?! canvas material doesnt make sense, biased teacher, material doesnt match at all horrible teacher

Professor Martin is easily the wort teacher I've ever had. I am a history major and the one positive thing I have to say about him is that he has reinforced all of my reasons as to why I want to be a good and unbiased history teacher in the future.

If you want to have any life outside of school, don't take any of his classes! Especially not summer or online ones. Every day you'll have multiple readings, 20-40 textbook pages, a paper, and a discussion board. The class was so time-consuming I spent my work breaks doing schoolwork. The only good thing is he gave good feedback.

Took him for his HIST10 summer class online. Spent hours of my day doing multiple assignments. Everything is out of 10 points but don't expect the 10th point if you don't go above and beyond. Strenuous amounts of reading and replying. He is unprofessional and does not use correct grammar when responding. Very unreasonable amount of work.

This was an online course, and his whole grading system was unfair. There were no quizzes or tests but the discussion posts were graded as them and he would come at my simple grammar mistakes, while he made more grammar mistakes. Once one assignment got a small grade it brings the whole grade down and it's hard to bring back up.

DROP this class immediately!!! Horrible professor

* Course full of discussions * No explanation as to what I did wrong even when I ask constantly * 8/10 on EVERYTHING no matter what I have tried (including talking to him) * More grammar issues from him yet I loose points for minor ones * Homework every other day, PAGES of reading Love history and this teacher led me to loose the passion for it.

Material was unclear and difficult to access. Doesn't respond to canvas messages and doesn't read submitted papers or give feedback. I had a 83% before the final assignment and he graded the assignment resulting in my grade dropping to a 80%. If he read his email he would have been able to fix it before submitting the grade for the semester.

The worst teacher I have ever had. It was only discussion posts for this class nothing else and he never gave me anything higher then an 8/10 ever. Very hard to get ahold of and is horrible at responding. Very hard to find his “notes” he claims you have to use on every post. Net would take again, he was on a power trip and he's a history teacher.
