Very good teacher, the material is tough but he touches on every subject and is very nice when you go for help.
Absolutely the best Math instructor I know. I would take him every semester if I could. While he is very demanding he makes a fun environment and will help you until you understand the material. Highly Recommended!!!!!
Excellent teacher of a difficult subjects.
Awesome teacher. Explains everything well.
"Mr.Nice guy" he bursts out his different colored chalks and does his martinal art on the chalk board. """AWESOME TEACHER""" His lectures are great, and often gets very excited about math.(Especially TRIG. Identitie
Great Teacher. He is a great guy, and will bend over backwards for his students. His lectures are clear, Tests are a little hard.
Good teacher with a lot of energy. His homework is pretty standard in a math class and the test are fair. overall a good teacher that explains things very well. Id take him again if i had to take another math class MMuuhhaaahaa
Great math teacher. Tries to help out his students in any way possible. The most homework I've ever had, but hey it's a math class. Unfortunately, I was unable to finish the semester, however, he is the best choice for a math teacher.
Loves his students. Loves his job, and he is great at it! Subject is the only thing that will make this class difficult. Even if you don't like math, he is so excited about it, you will be to! A very honorable teacher and person!
Mr Martin is a wonderful math teacher.
John was a most helpful math prof! He helped me re-define myself from a "mathematical quadraplegic" into a good student. Turned me around when I was about to drop out of school. He is a very caring person and a great teacher! Thanks John!
Great math teacher. He'll make you laugh...he's a true math dork but in a very charming, funny, wonderful way! I highly recommend taking him.
Martin is great. He's funny in class and knows his stuff. He explains things very clearly but seems way too happy all the time. Don't go to his office hours too much though, he's much friendlier in the classroom setting. Not one-on-one.
Martin is cool. His passion for the topic and skills for relating it really show in his encouraging class. I went from just taking it to get rid of my math requirement for transfer to actually considering taking a new math course. Take Martin!
He is the Mr Rogers of the Math Dept. He gets really excited when he's teaching and offers good background so it always makes sense.
good teacher, ns teaching and humor.
This is the first class I begin to understand Math. Well, im a foreign student. Before his class, I had studied math almost all by myself because those non-martin class had been unable to understand. But amazing~ this the first class i begin to understand math. and he usually work over time for stud
Terrible teacher, not very helpful and doesn't explain concepts very well
I've taken martin a few times, and would highly recommend taken him for math. Of all the math teachers I've taken, martin is the most prepared and organized of his peers. Extensive lectures that thourghly explain concepts, its more than just hours of copying down examples with no explanations 5*
he is very easy. you will learn a lot from him.
he only gives an hour on each mid term. if you need more time on mid term. he is going to be challenging
He is one of the best teachers you could get for 155. I highly suggest taking his course and you'll improve greatly. I have not only become better in my math skills, I have learned to enjoy mathematics and teaching it to others. He's a good grader and if you study hard, you'll do well. take him!
Martin is very good at teaching but expect a challenge and alot of work to get an A.
Not into college math, but this guy rocks. Takes his time explaining, but not boring. Very clear.
very easy explainse material clearly. gives you practice test from previous semester. goes over homework in class so that you can correct if needed. he tries to make each class intresting but sometimes his stories get a little but they're not very long stories.
awesome, awesome guy - very fun. sometimes he sits on subjects a little too long, but atleast he's thorough.
dont like how he deals with the homework and reviews, he's too hard on the homewok. Does a good job of explaining the subject though, but overall wouldnt take his class again.
Martin is an awesome teacher and I really enjoy being in his class.
HE IS A GREAT TEACHER. VERY CLEAR IN CLASS. ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP. GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. HE COLLECTED HOMEWORK OFTEN, AND IT HELPED MY GRADE, AND HELPED ME STAY ON TOP OF THE MATERIAL. TESTS WERE DIFFICULT, BUT GOOD LEARNING TOOLS.
John is truly a great teacher. He's mild and friendly - a total numbers nerd but it's more ammusing than obnoxious. He's very supportive, sympathetic and patient, I'd say he's the best teacher for people who are math phobic. This is the only math class I've ever truly liked, and I give John all the credit for that.
Good teacher but tests are hard and examples given in class are not clear enough.
He Explains the material well - answer questions during class, except weekly review questions, which you can work on with other students. He Helps during office hours; the tutorial center is also available for help.He wants his students to do well. Just remember WORK + EFFORT + TIME = RESULTS. I suggest contacting all professors before registering.
VERY good teacher. I highly recommend him. Made Calculus fun--great sense of humor, even early in the morning; cracked us all up. Nice guy, helpful and patient, great help in his office or after class. Tests are harder in the beginning, I think, so study the practice tests. I liked him so much I took him again for Math 1B. A+!
One of the coolest, most interesting teachers I've had, would definately reccomend.
This class although hard seems to be made a little bit harder by Mr. Martin. I really liked the guy and enjoyed his teaching, but some of the test questions seemed a little outrageous. If you work hard and put in a lot of time you'll do ok in this class. He's a great guy and great teacher though.
Great guy, very funny and just good teacher.
One of the best teachers I have ever had, and there are alot of great ones in the math department. Mr. Martin is the most organized and clear teacher I have ever had. I have never had a teacher who could answer questions as well as him: he has an amazing head for teaching math. Very nice and approachable guy in general! Yes, his tests are tough ;).
great teacher, lots of experience, very helpfull, truly cares.
Take him, his humor is a little corny but he made me laugh a rare thing in mathematics. I learned more in his class than I ever have in a math class. His exams can be rediculously hard sometimes but it makes you study harder and really learn the subject which will serve you well in future math classes. He is a great teacher.
Great teacher, he is very clear and direct in his teachings. This guy loves math and is very approachable to talk to if there is an issue. Keep up on the weekly reviews and the sample exams are like gold in his class. Take those sample exams seriously.
Mr. Martin is definitely on top of things. I've rarely had to ask questions after a lecture. He almost makes reading the textbook optional! =)
He was very helpful and was always at his office for giving help and advice. He was very clear in class and was always smiling
He is the best teacher in the math department. He is very clear and able to motivate you in math. Super organized and happy all the time. However his great teaching = a hard test. So be prepared for studying and doing all HW and weekly reviews.
I thought his class was very interesting, however the tests were very difficult. He does not give much partial credit on tests, and if you miss one question it will bring your test grade down to a B. Still, his class is interesting, organized, and fun. I learned a lot, but I wish the tests had been a little easier.
Wonderful man. Reliable, clear, sweet. Incorporates lecture, on board examples, homework review, etc. each class. Makes himself very available for students. Wants people to succeed! Don't expect him to be easy or hard: he is very FAIR. You'll get what you work for and deserve in this class.
Excellent math teacher! Very passionate about what he does. Great sense of humor. Very helpful. Tests & homework is graded fairly. I learned more from him than any other math teacher I've ever had. I'm so thankful I had the chance to take his class & learn so much.
Awesome teacher, loves what he does.
He is a great teacher and really covers the material well. He really expects a lot from his students though. And it is really hard to get an A.
Although he is nice, I did not like the class itself. He would put unfair questions on the tests (stuff we had not learned in our homework!) and had group projects which was basically pointless busywork that had little to do with our lessons. If the tests were easier and omit the group projects, I think it would have been a good class.
If math matters to you, taking John Martin's class will only make you like math more. If not, you might find him a little challenging...I'd enjoyed my semester and wished I'd had him for my previous math levels.
He spends most time every class lecturing for the next HW assignment and answering questions about the previous one. His teaching is easy to understand and he's willing to help His tests are usually based off of only things he's covered and are pretty easy if you pay attention. His corny humor makes class a lil less boring.
John Martin is my favorite teacher at the JC. Math is my least favorite subject b/c I am not that good at it and even though I only got a B in 150 and a C in 155 It was b/c math is not my thing, but I wouldn't have even passed algerbra if it wasn't for John Martin. Love him!
Great. Teacher. He's friendly, helpful, easy to understand, all the above. He has made math enjoyable for me, and that says a lot! Highly recommend!
John Martin was a good teacher, and I really enjoyed him. My C is my own fault. It's VERY important to come every single day because missing a day will screw you over. He makes a complicated subject pretty easy, take him!
He is the best math teacher at the JC. His enthusiasm, creativity and personality made me want to like math, and I am an english major, it is totally not my thing. He does expect you to do your part, but if you keep up with the homework and ask qu.s you will be fine. (His office hrs are awesome, very helpful and kind.)Take him!
John is the best math teacher at the JC. I don't have anything to gain from this comment. I am just helping out fellow students. He isn't the easiest teacher. If you are looking for a no brainer A go somewhere else. But if you appreciate math, take him. I am taking him for 1B. He is awesome. He is so clear. He is nice. He is great. Take him.
Great, great guy. very helpful. tries really hard to make sure you fully understand the material...then the test comes around, and it definitely feels as though his main goal in to trick you. read questions really really really carefully on tests or you'll be sorry!
Mr. Martin is a great teacher. I hate math, and im terrible at it. He takes time to help students out as long as you are willing to work hard. A lot of homework, tests aren't easy, but he'll work with you and thats whats important.
Good teacher. He sometimes talks to you like you're in kindergarden but he's a very nice man and he's not trying to be mean. Hard class, but keep up and you should be fine. Understand all the weekly reviews!!
This is the best teacher I have had yet at the JC. He is very organized and you know exactly what he expects from day one. He is always available to help and gives great practice tests. Your grade is up to you and how much effort you want to put in. A great teacher and person.
Martin's way of doing things keeps you more ontop of your assignments and forces to you do your work. He is very clear and has everything properly laid out, plus he's a total dork (in a good way) and he wears very fashionable sweaters ;)
Think a math-tortured mister rogers from the 6th dimension... no, actually John Martin is an absolutely wonderful teacher. The first couple of days we had a sub (who tried hard) but the difference was like a black hole and a super nova. Good teacher, take him if you can.
Math 10 with Martin is the hands-down coolest math class I have ever taken. He is very clear and will answer any questions you have. Sometimes comes off as a little impatient when his class isn't going quickly enough but means no harm. Truly loves math and makes sure you get to know all the really interesting things, even if you don't like math.
good teacher
Professor Martin is a great teacher. He is very organized and passionate about his subject. He's always willing to help, but would rather give hints so you can improve your problem-solving skills. His class is hard, but he makes sure that you learn the material if you put in the effort. I would certainly recommend this class!
Mr Martin is a great teacher. He gives the best lectures I have ever had in a math class. His format for notes is very well laid out.. and his writing is so neat and clear that it's easy to understand all the steps to a problem. He has a great sense of humor, too.. which is nice in a math class.
Mr. martin is the best math teacher in the world! he really wants you to succeed and will answer questions all day. he loves helping after class and is a super nice guy. crystal clear explanations. his tests are not easy but not hard either, a very fair grader. take his class and you will learn to love math, well as much as anyone can love math!
Mr. Martin is committed to you succeeding. Just go to class, do your hmwk, study well for the tests and you will do well. Mr. Martin's door is always open for questions and he is happy to help. Excellent teacher!
Very hard class, but with persistance you can get an A like I did! Mr. Martin is very understanding of personal situations that may arise during the semester, but you do need to do your homework and study for the tests! His tests are very difficult, but he is a great teacher! Very nice and funny, too!
Mr. Martin is the quintessential math teacher and I love him! His teaching style is perfect - systematic, step by step, no surprises. He's goofy and funny and does such a good job of explaining a subject that isn't easy to grasp for all. He's an excellent teacher.
Martin is a good teacher in that he knows his material, is extremely organized, and is fair. That said, he is a bit impersonal, and his rules do not bend at all. His clarity score is mostly attributed to the tail end of our class subject (flux) which our class got through without really having to understand concepts. Still, these are minor critiqs
Best teacher at the JC, period. Expect to work hard and learn wonderful things. Mr. Martin will provide you with tools needed to pass, but if you want an A you need to work for it. As for the comment left of the previous person who was in my 1C class, I believe that his clarity on the subject of flux was very clear. To each's own i guess.
John Martin should teach one class of every type of math. I wish I could take math with no one else. He is dedicated to the success of every student who demonstrates their own want to succeed and is probably the best teacher I've ever had.
Mr. Martin is absolutely phenomenal. clearest lectures and notes that help with hw. while hard, he is very helpful in office hours and will work with you to help you succeed and explain whatever you need. I wish he taught every section of math because I would never take another teacher again, i plan to follow him as far as possible. best teacher
EXCELLENT TEACHER!!! Absolutely willing to help - just ask! Truly a wonderful, wonderful man. BEST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!
Really clear. Always will help and answer your questions. gives examples on handouts practically the same to homework and exams. Practice exams mirror the actual exams. Great teacher all-round.
Very good instructor, very clear and conscience. Knows his material. He has never been asked a question he could not answer.
GREAT teacher! He loves to see his students succeed and will help with anything you need! Very organized. Homework due every class but not ridiculously hard. Definitely have to go to class or you miss out on a lot of info you can't get from the book. RECOMMENDED!! John is awesome!!
Mr. Martin really is a great math teacher. His best asset is that he explains the concept behind the mathematical process very clearly. He also sets aside class time for answering questions on the homework. Unless you're a mathematical genius, his tests and homework do require a lot of time and effort, but he will prepare you for future courses.
Martin is a great teacher! I took both 1C and 2 with him when he first started teaching the two courses again. He is extremely helpful. Homework due every class and Weekly Reviews every week. There are three tests and a final. He tells you exactly what to study. If you do all your work you will do well in the class.
Great math teacher, even better than Bach @ SRJC. Not the easiest due to the amount of homework/weekly reviews, but not hard either as he does his job and teaches you what you need to know. Does not take attendance and allows late work to be turned in-useful if you have a hard schedule.
He is a great teacher. I took math 1c and math 2 with him. His lectures are very clear and his tests are very straight forward and fair. Take him if you can.
Very concise and clear lectures. Everything is on topic including his jokes and sarcasms. Really enjoyed going to class for the jokes and excellent lectures. Didn't really need the book because his lectures are so detailed and understandable. However, his tests are tricky and hard, but he does prepare you for it. Study and you should do well
The greatest math teacher I have ever had. He is intensely passionate about math. He spends half the class reviewing the last class and the rest for new stuff. He raises his voice to help you remember important concepts and grades fairly. If you are the kind of person that /could/ like math but became jaded from bad teachers, TAKE MARTIN'S CLASSES.
MARTIN IS THE BEST!
He is by far the best teacher I have had at the JC. He goes slow enough for you to understand the topic but not too slow. He has comic strips on his papers to make it funny, he is very neat and organized. I have such a hard time with math and he really made it comfortable. I would completely recommend this class.
difficult tests. average amount of hw. not helpful if dont read the book. harder than bach but lectures better. strange sense of humor. dont miss class.
John is clear, to the point, and kind. His weekly reviews are a blast. His tests are challenging, but justly so.
Best instructor period ! Good notes, regular homework and studying will prepare you for some challenging tests. His lectures are precise, clear and on point. I wish more instructors were as organized as Martin. Helpful in class as well as office hours. Must take if your serious about learning the material.
Martin is very helpful, and clear on what he expects. lots of homework because the class meets mon-thu. The one thing wasn't mentioned here is the tests are hard (I am a serious student, did all my homework and studying.). I def. learned a lot from him, but would take a different teacher for my gpa if i could. :)
John is tough on tests, but very fair. He will make sure you learn the material. He's loving, witty, and clear. His weekly reviews are superb.
Martin is a great professor. His lectures are super clear and well organized. If he gave tests of average difficulty everyone would ace them because he is so precise in his lecture, so he challenges everyone instead. Rarely makes mistakes, nice guy. Everything he does is with careful forethought. Take him if you want to learn math deeply.
This guy is the best teacher I have had at SRJC. I had him for 155 summer class, and he lectures in a very clear and understandable way. It was the first Math course I took in 7 years and I am so thankful I ended up with him. He's tough, but that's what you need in a math teacher to get the material. I have renweed confidence in my math abilitiess
Great teacher to start my college life
He is not easy. But he is not impossible, as people make him out to be. I had two C's on mid term exams, and going into the final, I had the potential to get an A in the class if I got an A on the final. If you pay attention, diligently do your homework, and work hard, you can get an A in Martin's class. And you will learn a lot.
This is the best math class I've taken. He is clear, friendly and knows the material flawlessly. He is a "hard grader" because he expects his students to know the material thoroughly. It is necessary to put in a lot of time for this class but I think that's to be expected from a 5 unit course. He's also very helpful in his office hours.
I love this man. He restored my faith in the math department.
The ONLY bad thing about taking John's class is that all of your future math classes will completely suck
Without a doubt, one of the best teachers I've ever had. He explains everything clearly and is one of the sweetest teachers. I've never not struggled in a math class before. He makes math seem so simple. His notes are organized and well written. The only downside is that you will never want to take another math class that isn't taught by him.
Okay these people are all math nerds. His class is really hard and he teaches super easy problems, get to test and it is the homework on some serious steroids. It is not cool. He is nice but he gives out way too much homework and weekly reviews that are not helpful for his hard tests. His class sucked. He teaches lessons in between finals. To much.
Prior to taking this class I was a Psych major. John Martin's 1A class made me LOVE MATH AGAIN. His tests are very hard but his lectures are so clear and slow and he listens to questions you have. He assigns a lot of work but he is very helpful. I'm taking him for 1B now and it is even harder, but you learn much more in his class than anyone else.
Professor Martin is awesome. I was nervous about taking this class but he was very clear in lecture. His tests are a bit tricky. There is 2 hw each week and a review most weeks. Take his course, you won't regret it!
John was such an awesome teacher. I've always liked math a little, but he made it better for me. Always available to help outside of class or by email. Plus, he's super funny! Loved him!
Absolutely amazing teacher. I've been through every math class the JC offers and Martin is definitely my favorite. He's a fair grader and is very helpful if you have questions. It's a tough class, but he made manageable
Excellent professor! He's patient, super nice, has a great sense of humor, very well-organized and crystal clear. He leaves a lot of homework but it's for your own good. Includes some tricky questions in his tests but that's what math is all about! I would definitely take him again and recommend him but... he isn't for everyone though!
If you are not a math person don't take his class. Took liberal arts math with him, he chose to teach some of the hardest topics on the subject the first week..."infinity sets"that is way too complex for math 10 students.
If your looking for lots of hw every night with little explanation, go for it! He likes to assign multiple assignments a night with a weekly review every thurs. Provides practice test but loves to make the real deal way harder. Tests are only 10 problems with multiple parts. Number 10 is usually impossible
great teacher. its super easy to follow along in lectures because he doesnt usezip through slides. test are good and he gives ractice exams in the class website. do all the work and you will do fine!
John Martin taught a very difficult class, but I came out of it feeling very comfortable with the material in Math 1b and well prepared for the next course.
Yes, he's challenging. But it has been so rewarding to take his classes and develop concrete math skills and study habits. Shows all the signs of an extremely experienced and attentive professor. Does few examples in lecture but he goes through them slowly and very clearly. He is immaculately organized and prepared for lectures. I recommend him.
Friendly, patient, loves math. Extremely organized; grades and returns worktests immediately. No group work. Only 12 hw is collected. Very flexible and happy to accommodate special student needs or need for extra help. Lecture material is planned and organized, notes are tidy. Many little "safety nets" built into grading system. Recommended!
You have other options for the same math courses. He is old school. A ton of hw and weekly challenges. Tests can be long so start early as you can. Werner, bach, falbo. Much better choices on courses good luck. Yes I'm not a math person. This is an avg joe rating.
Martin is super clear and organized with lectures. The work is very challenging, but his quality of teaching balances the difficulty. He grades very fairly on everything and always goes over homework assignments on the day that they are due. Put the effort in and you will learn so much from him. I highly recommend him and would take his class again
Martin is a fantastic teacher! His notes are super clear and amazing. His tests can be pretty difficult, he wants you to think outside of the box for the applications of the material. Overall an outstanding teacher.
Martin is THE BEST. He is very clear, extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. His tests can be tougher than other instructors but if you follow his lectures and homework nothing should surprise you. He's a super nice guy and I recommend using his office hours. Do the weekly reviews and practice tests and you'll do fine.
Martin is a great teacher and good guy. He's very helpful and understanding and nice. His class gave me a very good understanding of the material that people who took other teachers missed. Everything we covered was relevant and he explained complex concepts clearly. I highly recommend him.
I took Martin for Math 27, Pre-calc. It is definitely a fast passed class and I had no experience with Trig. I went to Martins office hours almost everyday and he worked with me on my schedule because other classes conflicted with his office hours. He is a very good teacher and his lectures are clear and easy to understand. best math teacher ever.
This is a fast-paced difficult class, but Mr. Martin is an amazing teacher. Do not take this class if you are an over-sleeping class dodger. This is a real college-level math class. So either put on your big kid underwear, suit up and show up or skip it. Mr. Martin is a kind, helpful and caring soul. Catch him before he retires!
Overall a really good teacher. Lectures are clear and at a good pace, not too fast. Tests are pretty straightforward, he has copies of previous exams online, except the last question is always hard. Willing to help even if you cannot make his office hours. It was a hard, time consuming class, but if you put in the effort you should be ok
Martin is probably the most over rated professor at the JC... There's nothing you get from him that's anything special compared to other math teachers. Likes to make question 10 impossible, with no prior examples. Why? I don't know... Plenty of other math teachers, just as good that don't try to trick you. However, he is a helpful nice guy
He's a really nice guy with a dry sense of humor that I appreciated. I hate math but felt like he made it super clear. He explained the unit circle so I finally understood. He always has a number 10 on tests that is impossible. Overall I did way better in this class then in any trig class but it was still a ton of work.
Lectures are a performance: organized, interesting, entertaining, perfectly timed and most of all, exactly what you need to know to do the homework. Half of every class is spent working homework problems, and the other half is learning what's needed to do the next homework. Weekly reviews and the hw secure 25% of the grade! Tests not too hard.
I love all math, but found the summer class a bit challenging, particularly the probability/combinations/permutations chapters (which were two of four subjects covered). Problem #10 on the test was SO HARD -- it's nothing like homework :( Half lecture he works hw probs due that day, other half teaches new stuff. Great teacher, interesting lecture
Martin was my favorite professor by far. Neatest handwriting and notes were easy to understand. Lots of homework and weekly reviews, but nothin hard to handle. Will absolutely be taking calculus with him.
fave instructor; stay caught up with homework; very helpful in office hrs; beautiful, neat, colorful, ultra-organized notes; start weekly reviews early so you can get help in office hrs; lots of office hours; friendly; humble; lecture is useful and interesting (not rehash or summarizing what's in book already); generous partial credit on exams :)
summer class: not easy to get long homeworks done, but no weekly reviews! valuable lecture taught in clear & concise manner! practice tests are excellent test prep. one page of notes for final, though final has so much, no time to really look at notes. mr. martin is a a kind, helpful teacher who expects (and deserves) diligence toward math.
Old school, but in the best way possible! The space science and physics word problems on homework/reviews were hair-pullers, but at least they weren't on the exams. He'll get you *every* time with the TRICKY TRUE & FALSE! The inverse functions were tough, but the UNIT VECTORS, graphing, and identities were FUN. My FAVORITE teacher (any subject)!
Best teacher, he really knows how to teach students in a way the students learn. Class is based on taking notes, which I found to be fun and interesting. You don't need to take a lot of notes, because his way of teaching makes it understandable, sometimes he gives a lot of homework, sometimes just a few problems
If it wasn't for Mr. Martin I may never have moved on to a university ! I only pray he's a teacher when my own kids attend . BEST math teacher I e ever had . If he can teach me (mathematically challenged) he must be a good teacher :)
"Sometimes I overestimate your mathematical ability." Enough said. Martin doesn't make it easy to learn. Assigns too much tedious homework that does nothing to help you understand the material. The tests look nothing like the practice tests. He's highly overrated and I made the mistake of taking his class. Unless you're a math major, skip Martin.
Do the practice tests. Make sure you know how to actually do the problems instead of just looking at the back of the book for answers on the homework. He is available outside of class for students that need extra help.
Lots of homework, is not helpful to his students. I asked a question on a problem I did not understand and he shut me down and said it was easy and I should be able to figure it out... Would not recommend this teacher for anyone.
I was frustrated in the beginning. I felt like we had to teach ourselves. The lecture would be simple examples and the homework would be way different with problems we've never seen before. Spent 7 hours a week outside of class at Math Lab to complete the homework. He made up for this when we got to logarithms. He teaches them SO WELL. Pleased!!
The class is not easy. Yes, you will have to work hard for a good grade, but that's what college is all about. I failed my algebra classes in high school and even had to drop Math 155 last year because it was too difficult. Martin makes things very clear. I would not have passed without him. As long as you are willing to work, you will do fine.
Wow! What a great teacher, and person. John makes the material accessible and shows its relevance in the "real world". He's full of great one-liners, and really cares about his students doing well. If you do the homework and look at his test examples-he's paved the road to your success- you're going to do well.
John explains his lessons very clearly and is more than willing to answer students' questions. His grading criteria is a bit unfair, as he assigns 50+ homework problems and only grades 5 random ones. If you miss those 5, you will get 0 credit even if you did the rest of the assignment.
Martin was an amazing teacher. His lectures are VERY thorough and what he expects from you in this class is very clear. Sometimes, homework may be a lot but its a tough class. Exams are straightforward. He has study guides online which are super helpful. Definitely a great teacher who loves math and his job! I recommend taking him for math.
Professor Martin is awesome. His lectures are long, but he covers everything you need and encourages class participation/questions. Sometimes there's a lot of homework, but he's a fair grader. He wants his students to succeed and laughs along with us when he makes mistakes. Highly recommend for someone who hates math. He makes it fun and easy
One of the nicest guys ever. And an amazing teacher, I am looking forward to taking him again.
In algebra 2 he explained everything super thoroughly, gave a practice test before every exam, had a PALS guy to help with homework, he's a nice old man, he goes slowly, the list goes on. Amazing compared to the teacher I got a B with last semester. He is great at covering some review, and even final exam practice problems. I GOT 100% ON THE FINAL!
He is the best.
He takes time during his lectures to make sure his lecture his understood. If you don't understand something and don't get help you won't pass. He grades tests and weekly reviews, he doesn't look at homework, someone else grades homework. Although, he does start out class by going over questions we have about the homework which is 2 assignments.
I want to start by saying I hate math and only took this class because I had to. I am extremely grateful I took it with Martin. His tests always have a tough question at the end, I always got them wrong, but the rest of the test was easy and straightforward. He has weekly reviews and if you don't have a math major friend you are in trouble.
Mr. John Martin was an amazing professor and I am so glad to have taken him. He is an experienced teacher and also a very all around likable guy. He is very kind and caring, and really wants to see you excel. He is an awesome teacher and it's fairly easy to get an A. I took 155 with him and am currently taking 27, getting a strong A in both. Take!
The best math teacher I have had at SRJC. Makes seemingly challenging concepts easy to learn, and actually checks select homework problems for correctness. Homework load is not excessive, yet drills in the concepts sufficiently. I wish I could have gotten him for Calculus!
John Martin is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. He has a very good grasp on the subject, and often relates topics to real world applications and will give a different perspective on ideas, when the book definition does not make sense. He gives amazing lectures, and moves slowly so everyone understands, and explains each step as he goes.
The best math teacher in my entire life. Explains everything clearly and very motivated to teach math. He will explain you everything in his office hours also. He will also go over the HW and weekly reviews. Weekly reviews are the best practice for the exam. Always post his notes and wants everybody to do good in class.
One of the best math teacher I have ever had. He loves math so much and it totally shows. I wish I could have him for every math class I took and will take. His lecture is so clear and easy to follow. He cares a lot and is always there for help. Sometimes has dark humor but never should take it seriously. Dude is super rad.
John Martin is probably one of the best if not the best math teacher SRJC has. You can see him in office hours if you have a concern, even though finite mathematics got a little difficult toward the end he still made it fun. The SRJC is going to miss this teacher.
Perfect lectures, perfect handouts on colored paper, perfect weekly reviews, perfect projected notes (created with red, blue and green pens), interesting historical mathematical tidbits, fun props, great & kind help in office hours, and yikes-it-covers-everything-but-there's-never-enough-time final. Best math teacher, nay best teacher, bar none!
I had to retake math 155 three different times with 3 different professors and Mr. Martin was the first teacher that helped me understand the material and had the patience to teach me. Office hours were the best one on one lectures he gave out. He is one the best teachers I've ever had. There's homework everyday, quizzes and 4-5 tests. Highly recom
Professor Martin is super nice and very understanding. Every class began with going over any questions we had difficulty with on the homework. Lectures had important information for the homework; if you didn't understand the lectures, he offers help at his office hours and the textbook covers the information well. 2-3 homework assignments each week
This was the toughest college class I have ever taken. But Im glad that I took this class with Mr. Martin. Even though the subject itself was super hard, he tried to break it down and make it as simple and easy as possible for students. The tests were hard, but not out of this world. He also gave partial credit on tests if we showed work.
Mr. Martin was a very helpful teacher, but he won't hold your hand in this class. The thing i really liked about him was that he was very up front with us about what his style of teaching. He will help you if you go to office hours and attend class, but you still have to work very hard outside of class. The homework and tests were quite easy.
He is nice and very caring about you and your grade. We were learning about vectors for Trig and I just had to mention the quote from Airplane "what's your vector, Victor?" and he enjoyed it. I was strong in geometry as a kid, so maybe that's why Trig was awesome and easy. He's good at math and includes some history which helps retain interest.
I loved the class. Prof. Martin is a great choice for a teacher. My only problem is that I didnt know my grade in the class a lot of the time, but he let me turn in hw late. He gave 4 tests including the final and that makes up most of your grade. As long as you can keep up with the hw, you should do fine!
He is super super nice
He is super super nice.
The GOAT.
Martin is a great teacher and provides fantastic lectures. He explains topics well when you don't understand and provides more help during his office hours or through email. He cares and will help you reach your grade goal and pass the class. If you practice the concepts taught, learn them very well, and do the hw you will do fine in this class.
Such a nice professor who is very understanding. He makes sure that all of his students understand the contents of what he is teaching and has printable fill in the blank notes for every class. I would highly recommend Professor Martin to anyone needing or wanting to take a math class. He is funny and such a sweet man.
Flat out best professor I have ever had. I am a CS major and he taught this class so amazing it almost made me question if I just wanted to be a math major instead. He also said he hated teaching the unit circle, which worried me. But then some how I knew the whole unit circle by the end of the semester, yet he never taught it. A gifted professor.
Best professor I have ever had. He made me want to become a math major how accessible he made these complex topics feel. A truly gifted professor, and a honor to take his class.
Best professor I've ever had. Made Calculus tolerable, and even interesting at points. A truly gifted instructor. Just punch in his section number right now and add his class; there isn't even a point at looking into other professors, because he's simply the best in the department.
One of the best Professors at SRJC. Understands the material very well and it shows when he teaches it.
