Controlling, no class discussion
very unprofessional and strange
very odd. thinks its fun to make life difficult for students
Very unfair and relies on alot of memory work
Very clear. Very organized. Alot of note taking in his class.
john martin is an unfair teacher, does not care for his students, and he'sboring
passing this class is the greatest accomplishment
Very good public speaker, intresting but hard exams - easy projects
complascent and very disinterested in this job
Such a difficult man, it doesn't matter what you do, he's ridiculous.
Good teacher, learn a lot from him, tests are hard but assignments are easier. Nice guy.
You work your butt off in John Martin's class, but you get a gold mine out of it. His sense of humour is top notch!
Tests are impossible most of the time. Assignment is easy but takes a LONG time to locate the ridiculous number of sources for them. He has some interesting stories though.
There's something about John.... He's not your typical professor, or is he? Not 100% sure of this yet. He can keep a class awake and (more importantly) interested in his lectures. It's appreciated. I still havn't quite gotten him figured out though
not a good teacher. tests are hard, and there is no prep for them, the textbooks are a waste of money. didn't learn anything all year, thanks!
Funny instructor, knows the material, and the exams aren't too bad.
If he likes you, you will do good.
Why tenure shouldnt be allowed...need i say more? Tests are brutal his assignments are easier.
He's a good teacher but could use some help with making his teaching a tad more exciting, not just power point and note taking.

the things that he lectures about are not in his tests, the things he puts in his tests are absurd, just so he knows if your doing the reading or not. he's a real interesting guy. you'll get a good mark if he likes you.
John has a very distinct style of teaching. If you have a good memory and are a good note-taker, you ought to do ok. He's hilarious and so candid!
he is the most arrogant and self-centred persom I have ever met, he has no sense of humor and I do not recommed him to anyone
He's really not that bad if (and only if) you follow directions. the final sucks because it's pulled out of thin air, but as for papers......follow word count specifications unless you want a couple of day to redue it!!!!!!!!
So hard, final came out of no where, 1 in 4 fails assignments, and he says not to take notes on things, and then puts them on the final! grrr
John is very clear in his lectures about what he will be examining, he always answers questions and emails
If i had to use one word to describe John it would be BORING!! He is the worst prof i have had for any crim courses, and i have taken 9!!If you can take any course that IRWIN COHEN teaches. John makes the lectures DULL, you will want to leave his class early FOR SURE!Irwin makes them FUN!John is a HARD marker!DONT TAKE HIS CLASSES AT ALL!!
John doesn't want idiots in his class. Don't be one of them and you'll do fine. Just write your analysis and thoughts (not personal life story) on the subject, follow assignment instructions, and keep up with your readings. You'll do fine.
Totally inconsistant. Picks favourites and ignores everyone else in the class. His exams are sometimes ridiculously easy and other times out of thin air. Completely unapproacheable and humourless.
Overall, John its not a bad instructor. The course was not that interesting, but really how interesting can he make it when it is taught online. His expectations seem a bit high for a first year course, but his instructions are fairly clear, which makes it a little easier.

not a very attractive intro to the field of study. If you jsut want to do "fine" in his class then by all means do the readings and try ur heart out on his assignments and tests. If you want to do WELL....then do yourself a favor and take antoher teacher. Avoid John at all and i mean ALL costs.

This guy is very bitter about our criminal justice system and shows it his annoted bibliography sucks and is hard but his class is managable try and get another teacher like Kim (she dosen't have a final exam)
I loved him. Hilarious. Any proff who wears a Coronaville t-shirt to class you know is going to be great. Funny, a bit red necked, but clear in his expectations and has given me a great intro into crim.
not for slackers
leave your cell in your car
A serious guy, no "frills" prison's in his ideology. He is teaching a subject that is very subjective; therefore, difficult, and very wide. Some say he is no good, but, he encourages hard studying. Not that bad, but not my favourite!
have to earn it
awesome for online classes, do the work, post interesting discussions and youll get an A
just follow directions and it's a breeze
I didn't really enjoy this class very much.I must admit that John's class made me think in ways that most classes do not.I spent most of my time thinking of ways to prove that he was wrong. He was pretty clear with his expectations, and he is not very forgiving if you screw up.READ directions, cause he quite seriously will give you 0 if you do not!
Do yourself a favor and find another professor. John is very incosistent in marking, and is probably the most anal professor I have ever had.
Follow instructions and its an easy A
His tests are EASY, open book? come on! He has a funny personality you just have to bring it out, by actually speaking up in his class. Love the Coronaville t-shirt. LEAVE YOUR CELL IN CAR. lol.

Quite strict but exams are all take home.
Great Prof. that expects hard work. He knows the topic(s) and his lectures aren't bad. Assignments are tough, but not impossible. Work hard and you will be graded appropriately. Exams are very easy. Have taken numerous times, and will continue to take.
Like others say "follow instructions" and it's an easy course. Takes quite different perspective on things which can be intresting
most unique class so far
I found he wasnt very interesting to listen to
My first crim class and it was a bit tough but I did pretty good in the end. I"m doing an online with him this semester and it seems much easier
4 multiple choise quizzzes and no final. If there's an easier course I want to sign up for it
Horrible teacher, gives no ryhme or reason for the grades you recieve. Strict and boring
do not take this class with him! we had a take home midterm and most people failed! we went over it in class and when we had the things he was looking for in our exam he agreed but still refused to change the mark. Very biased and lets it show.I have no idea why he is a prof he seems like he hates students.
Slow lecturer but easy on students tests are open book . Directions for essay are strict but clear
best crime class in the program. guest speakers were great addtion
John is a great prof who is extremely helpful and has a great sense of humor. Anyone who thinks that he doesn't care about students should check their personal level of effort in his class! John is fair and clear with assignments and his grading is based on academic quality. I had John for 3 consecutive semesters and each one was consistent~
I have only had him for an online class but he seems like he hates teaching. He is not helpful at all, and is very strict. Unless u stick to EVERYTHING he asks you for you will fail your paper etc. He needs to relax a little bit and just chill about the small little details. Failing someone on a paper for being short/over a few words is ridiculous
I have had John for 6 or 7 crim courses.. and I have to say that he is incredibly intelligent in the field of criminology. He is one of BC's experts thats for sure and for that reason he is a good professor to take. However, I do find him quite arrogant and condescending. He definitely picks favourites and makes it known. Work your butt off!
Made university experience significantly less enjoyable
Easy A. Just follow instructions which are really code words for A
Took the online course with him. It really wasn't too bad. Just had to do the readings and follow his instructions exactly and it was a pretty easy A. I've heard opposite stories of taking courses in class with him however.
Has anyone taken his crim 311 online. If so what is the format. For the ppl who took his online crim 311 what did you think of it ? What is the format for the class. For example how many assigments and exams.
This was an online class. He is very strict. He expects that you be online daily and does not take ANY excuse for even a slight transgression. I just did a paper for him, the instructions were VERY strict, and looking at what other people have written, I have no idea what my grade will be now!
For serious students only. He expects a lot of effort and very unforgiving when it doesn't happen. He has the best format for online classes just lot of work required
This professor is rude! His book review for the course is super strict, & the week before it was due, he sent out an email saying he wouldn?t be responding to too many emails due to being away! How unethical. Then said I ignored the instructions on how to submit it, when I even emailed him the question! Oh wait he was away and didnt respond!
I am a B+ to A+ student. Do not take a class with this prof if you expect to learn anything at all. I took an online course with him, and he was nonexistent in the forums, did not seem to contribute anything at all. I did not learn anything. Waste of money.
Oh, and he may give you a bad mark for discussion participation without telling you why. I will mention that I am usually a B+ to A+ student. I will be graduating with a very good GPA...but this professor will give you a good mark when you don't deserve it, and a horrible mark when you don't deserve it.
Does not care about student's learning process. Seems to pick favorites. Make sure you agree with him, and you will do well. Show any form of personal expression, and you will get a bad mark. Does not foster learning at all. UFV, what the heck are you doing? This is a waste of money.
Horrible. That is all I have to say. Online classes are nothing but chit chat about current news articles. Not challenging, nothing new. Prof is nonexistent in the forums.
I was concerned taking my first online class but must say this is the only way to go. Course is so organized and easy to follow as long as you stay on top of weekly quizzes and discussion requirements. Mr. Martin usually answered emails within the hour and kept us informed of what was happening all the time
I've only had him in the classroom so not sure about his online teaching. For a motivated student he is one of the very best. forces you to think critically, think outside the box, as he alwasy says and encourages you to question just about everything. Politically incorrect and quite funny at times.
He is impossible to get an answer from on email. The online class was ridiculous with what he expected on a weekly basis. His grading was all over the place. I missed the deadline for a paper by 10 minutes, I was not given the opportunity to turn it in, and was given a NC for the class because it wasn't there. DON'T take this class!
I work and have kids so onlne is the only way I can go to school. John's system is the very best for online but probably not fr everyone. He expects a lot and has no leeway for deadlines. It worked for me but most students want spoonfed and that's just not n hs DNA. In class I understand he bans laptops on account of students using facebook.
I had John as a teacher in a crim class three years ago and just finished his webct class. He was a lot tougher in class and has really dumbed down in the onlne course. People saying his online is too hard don't know what they're talkng about. It was a breze compared to the classroom.
Just recently started the Crim 100 online course.Hours and Hours of reading. 2000 word essay on a book called "Shake Down" required with very very strict guidelines. Seems a little over the top for an online first year course. Mandatory online discussion posts, although the prof never posts anything at all.
This class was supposed to be a gpa boost. When in reality im failing badly. The class is an online first year course so who wouldnt. Participation discussion and quizzes weekly. Quizzes were easy but the discussion is marked harder than should be. 2000 word book report aswell. too much work that is really unnecessary for such an insignificant class
The previous person to rate this instructor says it all; young people in college today are basically illiterate and clearly unprepared and unwilling to apply themselves. I had a class with John Martin some years ago and found his classes fun, humorous and always topical. I absolutely loved his ban on cell phones and computers in class!
John is a very strict teacher, especially when it comes to deadlines and word counts. However, this class was extremely interesting with lively debates and very fascinating topics if you like criminology. He's a fair teacher. Keep exactly to the guidelines and you'll do well. I look forward to taking two classes with him next semester.
Don't take him!!!! How do people like this get jobs? He is not student focused at all. University is about learning and expression. He won't have any of that. I want a refund, retire already!
More work than other online classes but very organized. He's very strict with deadlines and instructions so don't expect any leeway with late assignments or missed work. Online classes are quite impersonal so hard to say anything good or bad. Assignment, quiz and discussions every week or so. Paper looks ok
Course is clear and seems fair so far. I'm not sure why this class should be required. It's more of a special interest elective. Unless you're really into multiculturalism its boring. Make it optional.
Appears clear by the guidelines, but he is anything but. Significantly inconsistent grading between students. Tends to prefers female students, so expect better grades if your a woman. Students who like this guy are obviously from a different planet, or simply thinking about some other instructor at UFV.
Don't take, he won't accept papers even a day late and too anal about grammar and commas. He should be grading my ideas not my spelling
I certainly wouldn't take a class from him as a casual elective but for a introduction to criminal justice you'll be well prepared for the other courses. He is too picky on the assignment but the details are clear. He is quite funny but a lot of it is missed by younger studetns,
For a first-year course, his requirements are absurd. I took this class as an elective, and it turned out to be more work than any fourth-year course I've taken. His grading is completely arbitrary, and he doesn't offer any clarification when asked.
Easiest course ever had. Weekly quizzes are open book and discussions were just online chat. Book review was only assignment and I got perfect on the online final.
Amazing Prof. Extremely interesting. Excellent course. I recommend it wholeheartedly - phenomenal!
This class was really informative. I got a lot out of it and would definitely recommend it. I wouldn't take another online course because it's REALLY time consuming but overall it's an easy class. He's an easy marker but isn't always clear. It won't drop your GPA if you're diligent but if you're a slacker then don't take this class online!
This is an online course with great discussion topics and easy textbook based quizzes once a week. If you are organized it's an easy GPA boost.
The tests were open book but he doesn't give very much time to do the tests. The book review we had to write was extremely hard and his directions on how to write it were EXTREMLY confussing. Nice guy..loves to where his "it's 5 oclock somewhere" shirt. Lots of useful info from attending the classes. Shows Videos every class! :)
If you carefully read all the chapters required in the text book, his tests are not that difficult as they are open book. He can be a little boring in class but hes not what I would call a bad teacher. overall a decent class
A very rotten apple in the box of instructors at UFV in many respects, wonder how he even got the job! Now that he is gone, ratings based on student experiences at the university should go up!! :)
Just brutal. This guy does not know how to teach. He is a miserable person, a rotten instructor and should not be teaching. Avoid this teacher. He berates students and couldn't care less about you.
Angry every daysimply read overheads out loud & didn't allow time to copy the essentialsunclear expectationsarbitrary marking that he was unable to explain when askedtold us his grading scheme was intended to compensate for other profs "inflated" grades. Very glad he has chosen to pursue a different career. It was time. I hope he's happier now.
