He's a cool guy, but visit his office before tests!!
he is the coolest prof i ever had
you'll take alot of notes. Hist of Pa is a great class
great guy, very helpful & understanding, Take his class.
I love McLarnon...he is a big volleyball fan!
ModeratlyDifficult, but you will learn alot, and he is a great teacher.
The worst teacher I ever had. Is EXTREMELY unfair with grading!!!!!!!!!
loved it loved it loved it! i love history anyway, but here it was exciting and fun
fun prof, first history class i actually enjoyed! very helpful
if you go to class and read the material there is no reason why you should do badly. very fair and SO helpful. If you need help just ASK!
Loves his subject!
Horrible, not willing to help, and changed his mind too many times during the course of the semester. Worst prof in the department.
Stay away from his classes. Not worth the headache!
Great prof., great advisor, and an all around great guy!
He is a great teacher but you have to read everything and study. If you need help he will help you just go to him. His answers to his test come right from the notes and book and there are no surprises.
Dr. McLarnon was definitely the best prof at MU! Willing to take the time to make sure you succeed, and easy to get along with! Treats you like an adult (Imagine that...lol)
he is awesome but go see him before a test.
really awesome prof. interesting class, great advisor
The best professor at MU. He is totally cool and a very understanding person. He goes out of his way to help people and is just a nice guy. He is entertaining in class and enjoys what he does. Do take him for any history class you can.
Interesting lectures, yet seems to have excessive arrogance over everyone under him. His grading is hard, unfair, and highly biased. His incompetence is also overwhelming.
Has a good relationship with students, friendly, though a bit arrogant. Dependant on videos in class, which most students will sleep through. Gives essay questions ahead of time and is willing to give you pointers if you stop by his office.
He's a great teacher. He doesn't worry about attendance. He gives essay questions before his tests. Good lecturer, too.
motivational and fun. one of the best profs at millersville.
Take advantage of office hours, he gives you questions from the test and he gives you the essays before the test. I got a 100 on my final because of how helpful he is. He can be a little boring, but definitely take him!
Not as great as I thought he would be. Test terms are never what you would expect; he leaves the room during tests and people hardcore cheat which is annoying for those of us who don't, uses a lot of boring movies. If you go see him, you will do well
He is fun, informative, easy to get along with. If you fail, it is your fault. He gives hints, essay ?s ahead of time. Real down to earth guy. He is a wealth of knowledge.
Awesome, and very cute!
What a great guy! He's very nice, and the classes are so much fun, even though we don't really talk about what's on the syllabus for that day. He's also a talented musician! I think he's one of the nicest, down-to-earth professors here. Definitely take him if you can.
Awesome class! I thought I would hate it, but I love it!
pointless...
Cute man, cute dog!
good prof! grades papers are little hard but gives test questions ahead of time
so helpful. grades papers hard but if you do the work you will get credit for it. make sure you keep your past and present tense grammar correct. tests are moderate. terms are nuts but the essays are given ahead of time. he has a great office to chill in .. any one is welcome
pointless is right, gives you the questions before the test, but good luck finding material in your notes to answer the essay questions. I had to teach myself american history, even though i went to every class. huge waste of my time
This class was so much fun. We rarely did anything but I actually learned a lot. I bull crapped my research paper and still got an A. Take him for WIT!!!
This was the most pointless class I have ever taken. We did not talk about a single vital thing! This is the perfect example of tenure abuse. I want my time & money back!!! P.S. One class he played the guitar and sang the whole time!!!
Dr. McLarnon was one of the best professors
The most POINTLESS class you could take. Let me summarize: Read boring articles, write one page paper, make 4 copies, get into groups and grade papers, turn in and get really bad grade because he is so picky and gives no suggestions for how to imporove, repeat process. This class has no point.
Boring, non-chronological, off task, where did those questions come from?, he is a joke!
Couldn't ask for a better prof. If you do your work, his tests are incredibly easy. He is very down to earth and will actually stand up for students in front of anyone. He's truly an asset to the university.
Doesn't lecture but uses class as a kind of open forum to discuss the subject of the readings. He actually makes you think. It was one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken here and I really enjoyed it. Almost no note-taking. DO NOT take it if you want an easy memorization class.
Really great guy personally. Class is super easy just take some notes and sit back. It can be a little boring. Overall it is simple and if you do well you don't have to take the final.
A very cool guy, and super knowledgeable. This class was totally pointless, and boring at times. He does try to make it interesting though. You do some busywork, but it's not that bad. Drives a hot car!
not great
Enjoyed the class very much. Tests were a bit difficult with identification but the essay question was easy as anything. The paper was a piece of cake. He's easy to get along with and gets along with his students very well.
I have never hated or liked a professor as much as I have at the same time but Dr Mclarnon is a great professor, very helpful and a good guy as well.
Cute for an old guy...
Awesome teacher. Make sure you take plenty of notes though, and know your terminology. Especially take notes during the movies. He's a funny guy and always willing to help explain things. Usually lets class out early.
He's really nice and I was very interested in his class. Makes it interesting and the tests aren't too difficult. I'd recommend taking a class with him.
He didn't teach us, he just had us watch documentaries...and then pulled terms out of his arse for the one and only exam. I am of the opinion that when i pay for a class, i would like to be taught.. not have Walter Kronkite teach me. Total BS. DONT TAKE HIM!! He is Satan incarnate.
Classes arent mandatory easy to skip if you get notes from someone. There are a lot of notes for the tests though 3 tests determine your whole grade nothing else. Tests are kinda hard...you MUST study ALL your notes and read some in the book look off of outline for the book. Hes a funny guy though...not TOO bad i guess, but i wouldnt take him again
Test one range in the class was from 3-104. Sure, someone got a 104, but someone got a freaking 3. Test is mad hard, and he teaches you nothing. boo, hiss.
He is awesome. I had him scheduled for 8am and wanted to sleep in so he changed me to the same class at 9am without having to fill out all the bs paperwork. Gives 3 tests and a final. If you pay attention in class you will pass his class. Plus you only need to give a thesis for the books. Essays are usually 2 questions pick 1.
The class was a total joke. Absoloutely no structure, just had us watch movies and documentaries instead of teaching. Easy grader on tests, easy A if you are a student who actually shows up for class and does something. Do not buy textbooks since he doesn't assign anytthing from them or teach from them. Just take good notes durning lecture.
An absolute jerk who can't teach worth a lick, only the truly stupid, lazy, and boring people will enjoy his classes. So if you're stupid, lazy and boring...knock yourself out. Sorority girls who like to flirt seem to like him. No surprise there, a stupid teacher for stupid students.
Apparently PA history involves *only* Philadelphia politics. Way too much wasted time in this class. Grades are the result of 2 tests that, and a research paper. Pennsylvania has a rich history; unfortunately it was not taught in this class.
Lazy, unorganized, and v a g u e. Tests would be easy, if you knew where the heck he was pulling the questions from! (I have an idea...) Loves his movies, but i'm not complaining about that. It seemed that the only time I learned anything was during those movies. Often teaches based solely on his opinion.
The only lazy, vague, and unorganized person in the class is a complainer. Terms come from notes(all can be found if good notes were taken). All others can be found in the assigned readings. Those who complain are unwilling to do any substantive work. A wealth of knowledge is presented daily, even through a surgery and heart attack! Shame on you.
Dr. McLarnon has to be the best professor at this University. He is willing to help you with anything. Everyone that gives him a bad rating has no idea what they are talking about. Smart, funny, interesting and really wants to connect wit his students. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY suggest taking him
This guy is a really bad teacher. He is very opinionated and quite frankly insane. Tests are horrible, you never know what to study for, he grades based on opinion. This guy is bad.
Three words-waste of time.
He's fantastic!! A genius with an uncanny memory for facts. He also has incredible musical talent!!! He is a super nice guy whose door is always open. He is a real asset to Millersville. I am SO glad I got to know him.
He's okay. Picks his class favorites and grades accordingly. Try to be a favorite so you can skip the final.
I've had him for a couple different classes in the past. Don't know why people are so high on him. If you don't mind his arrogance or his tendency to play favorites, he is the man for you...
In regards to the previous rating, the only favorites (if any) that Dr. McLarnon has are the students who come to class and appear attentive. So, if you sleep through class and appear inattentive, do not expect to do well. Well now, attendance and participation serving as key ingredients to success in a class - - what a novel idea! The argument tha
If you refer to the Pueblo Incident as a fight involving Native Americans in New Mexico, do not expect to do well. If you pay attention, go to class, and show a slight interest in the material, you will most certainly do well. A MUST TAKE durring your time at MU!
Good guy, very helpful. If you don't like irreverent humour, he is not for you. Somewhat vulgar, but frankly a brilliant man and excellent teacher. The readings can be a bit dry, but hey - its history of American political parties, what do you expect?
he is extremely helpful when a student needs help preparing for an exam. he is always willing to meet with anyone in his office.
Fun guy who really knows his history. Grades are from three tests that are multiple choice and one essay. Tests are tough and you need to study, but fair. He doesnt ask anything he didnt cover in class. I would recommend taking a class with him.
Took as evening class & he routinely fell behind syllabus; many topics not covered in lecture but are on tests; tests difficult, extra credit problems have no relation to course matter; very strict mechanics requirements on papers, like a freshman ENGL course; course included debates about current issues not related to course objectives
Great teacher, bit liberal but then again who isn't. Be prepared to read, and write, accept what you can't do and enjoy his rants.
Nice Guy, but can make remarks that will very easily make you feel nervous. Understanding professor, makes you laugh alot in class. makes hilarious comments!
to the liberal comment: he isnt. hes very conservative but he makes comments more to question points than to actually make his opinion.
This class was not what I expected. All lecture. Only 2 very hard tests, one paper, and a debate. I was intimidated by his teaching methods. I would never take him again.
The best history teacher I have ever had! I learned more than I thought possible. Dr. McLarnon has a sophisticated style, sophisticated humor, and he cares about his students.
Dr. McLarnon is easy on the eyes. He is charming, handsome, intelligent. Sophisticated sense of humor. Cares. Makes history come alive. Challenging; be sure to study! Offers opportunity to review prior to tests; take advantage!
What should have been my favorite class based on my interests turned into my least favorite of my time at Millersville. There were days where we didn't even talk about the Presidency. One day we watched a documentary on rock and roll which has NOTHING to do with anything we were talking about. Didn't respond to e-mails. Not recomended at all.
Loved him! Such a nice, fun guy. He has review sessions before every test, make sure you go to them!! He will read you every possible test question and give you the answers!
Easy grader. Our class time was used to make fun of peoples grammatical errors and be condesending.Sent 4emails concerning health issues,he never responded and tried to drop me.Thank god I kept the emails!Strongly recommend him if you want to sit around and belittle people
I loved this man. He is funny and awesome. Go to any extra credit you can get, it really adds up and helped me be exempt from the final. Gives 3 tests GO TO THE REVIEW SESSIONS and READ THE BOOK. Attendance is mandatory. He's really helpful uses powerpoints with key words so you can miss some important things and he tends to jump around a lot.
HE IS SO FUNNY! He is probably my favorite professor. His class is not easy and it takes a lot of effort to get through but he really rewards those who go the extra length to do well. He only gives out 3 tests and they are always really difficult. Beware: extra credit on tests are totally random and have nothing to do with history.
I took him thinking it was easy after i heard about all the extra cred and study sessions. Well, he stopped ALL of that when I had him. Hardest tests I have ever taken in my life. I never missed a class and studied like mad, and I did not know any answers. Grades are only 3 tests. Nothing else. I'm even a history major.
Easy class if you attend, take good notes, and study for exams. The extra credit itself can get you really easy points. Class is easy, book is not used, and attendance is only taken about 3 times through the semester. It is important to be there when he takes attendance so that your exam grade will be curved.
Don't take this class... does not explain anything, no textbook to refer to, rude and arrogant.. stay far away
John McLarnon once wrestled a grizzly bear naked and covered in bacon grease and won! He only took the title "Doctor" because "Hardcore Motha" was already taken. Mt. Rushmore didn't originally have Roosevelt on it, until McLarnon carved him into the mountain with his fists!
Very helpful and clear (though he gets off topic very easily). If you pay attention and take Noyes you'll do fine. FOLLOW HIS PAPER GUIDELINES EXACTLY!
The professor is hilarious. The course is interesting. As long as you keep up with the work and take good notes you'll be fine. There are three grades for the course and if you have a 93 average or higher between the first two then you don't have to take the final.
This class is SOO easy! He gives you the test beforehand!! Just go to his office hours a few weeks before the test (only three tests a semester) and study it a few times (I studied little chunks at a time a lot and I did very well) and you'll have an easy A! He rarely takes attendance until the end of the semester when he takes it everyday. SO EASY
Only 3 tests throughout the entire year. If you go to his office before the exams, you can get a list of the possible questions. I HIGHLY recommend it as the questions will be difficult if you don't do so. Overall it was a good and easy course. I would recommend him.
*NIGHT CLASS* NEVER used the textbook. Posts a slideshow with ALL possible questions (around 200) to study from. Multiple choice tests. Only grades are 3 tests.
Difficult, conservative, but totally worth it. As a person who tends to be more liberal minded, I found it refreshing to hear history from an opposing viewpointwho actually is able to state these conclusions with actual evidence, instead of unfounded hyperbole. Not easy, but what really good classes are. If you really enjoy history, take it.
McLarnon is the man. Lectures are interesting and hilarious. Show up. Take notes. Go see him during office hours before the test and he'll give you a list of possible questions. Put forth just a bit of effort and the A is yours, no problem.
He was awesome. I have him right now for Contours of US History and I think his lectures are really interesting. His tests are crazy easy as long as you study from the study guide he puts on D2L. Taking him again for another history class next semester.
This professor teaches a fairly easy, laid back course. However, you need to be in class to succeed. You will do weekly readings that can get up to 25 pages that you have to write in depth summaries of. There are debates in the class where all you have to do is show up to pass. We did not have a textbook to use, it just wasn't necessary.
This guy is the rudest professor I have met at this school. Papers that would come back in the 90's from most professors get 70's from him. Ask him a questions you honestly can't find the answer to? He will make sure you know he thinks there is a way to find the answer without asking him
Mean, rude, tough grader, rips apart your paper and finds every tiny little thing to complain about when grading just to take off more points, he likes to make a fool out of his students and did this to many in class
worst history prof
I really loved McLarnon's class. If you're not into mostly powerpoints and videos, then don't expect much. But McLarnon's commentary and honesty are great. Be sure to read the assigned readings, and the article summaries are not hard if you actually follow the instructions and look at the examples. An easy class and a great professor.
Great professor, it was a night class so a 6-9 it was obviously lecture heavy but he made class fun. Funny guy and relates well to his students. Quizzes are based on readings and he's picky about file names but that's because of all the grades he's doing. Overall he's awesome and knows so much about history. Highly recommend this course for BSE maj
I took History of Political Parties (even though I don't really do politics) based on a professor recommendation of a friend. Best. Decision. Ever. Dr. McLarnon is one of the funniest people I've ever met. He's very chill when it comes to class structure, you hear some amazing stories, and best of all, no final exam so long as you get a A!
Had his American Presidency class on W 6-9pm. Attendance wasn't required but he assigned a long article to read each week and gave a 5 questions quiz on it at the start of each class with multiple extra credit questions usually about just random facts. Grades were papers/debates. Tough grader on papers but tells you and gives detailed criteria
Keep in mind I excel at history (my major) but that said the class is easy if you're willing to put in a LOT of time. This online class is lots of reading, powerpoints with audio lectures embedded, and READING - graded mostly on quizzes (60%); rest is written assignments and discussions. LOTS of time do to work but it's easy&an easy A if you do
Dr. Mclarnon is great, funny, caring, and just an overall really cool professor. If you have an A in the course you're exempt from the final so that's motivation to do well. I had him for contours of us history and he is so educated on his subject and always accessible to help you whenever. I loved his class and would definitely take him again
Very friendly. History of the Presidency, grades on reviews of assigned articles and quizzes on articles. 3 in class debates, amazing lectures. Youll learn a lot and never be board. Quizzes are tough must remember very specific details from long articles. Not an easy class but interesting and fun.
He is amazing
Hes a character, funny and caring. Hes got ur back and will help you. Very cool lectures. Debates lack clear criteria. His article reviews are easy once you understand his pet peeves. Quizzes are tricky you essentially need to memorize the article because it can be random facts from the article. Great prof once you get the hang of his classes!
McLarnon has become a friend to me. He's a tough professor and you have to try in his class but honestly, it wasn't hard to try because it was so fun. He's a hilarious guy and he knows everything about history as well as music. Just put in the effort and you'll be good. Never read the books he assigned but DO THE DEBATE PREP AND PARTICIPATE.
Dr. McLarnon is one of the best professors I've ever had! A hidden gem of MU if there ever was one. Amazing lectures, fantastic feedback, and a personality that'll have you smiling ear to ear; even if it's an 8am class. Yall are missing out if you haven't taken his courses yet! ;)
Dr. McLarnon is one of the best professors I've ever had. His lectures, although the subjects can be somewhat dry, were always well organized and interesting. He's a very hilarious, sarcastic individual. As a bonus, if you get an A in the class, you don't have a final!
McLarnon is an interesting professor, if you know how to write the article reviews the way he likes then youll do ok. Quizzes are tough 5 questions from an article and it could be the smallest detail. Hes clear on expectations and helpful to anyone who is struggling. Funny too, he can make heavy topics easy to talk about.
I've had Dr. McLarnon for both online and in person classes and by far I like in person much better. His online class is graded mainly with 5 question quizzes that you get three minutes to take. These quizzes also do not tell you what you got wrong. All in all I feel as though I learned nothing from the online course.
McLarnon is an awful professor. He has 6 pages if rules for 200 word article reviews. Everything in his class is worth 100 points, event the 5 question 3 minute long quizzes. The reading quizzes are based off of one of two readings that are sometimes over 40 pages long. And, most of the readings he has you write reviews on are written by him.
Hes a rude individual and his guidelines for his reviews are unrealistic - you can follow the guidelines he sets and still either not get graded for them or get serious points deducted. Ive had some brilliant historians as professors and hes far from ever being on their level.
