Not very helpful, does not offer any extra credit, needs to be teaching at a four year college and needs to realize when people need help and be there to offer help. Not very user friendly.

He does not follow his lecture schedule. He has no objectives, if he does he does not follow them. His notes are VERY jumpy and unclear. He moves way too fast. He does not give test regularly. There's months of material to study with no guide sheet to tell you what's most important to study. I've NEVER done so badly in a class.
He is very hard. He does give a great curve. This class is managable.
Hard!! Lecture notes are back and forth. Only 3 tests all semester. He is very understanding though and will let you make up missed quizzes and test. Gives a life saving curve.
This class is for sure a challenge. He does offer lots of extra credit. He is very understanding and helpful to his students. He curves grades, thank god! This class is managable. I don't think he would fail anyone, he'll work with you.
this class is tough but yo can do it if you set back a lot, I mean a lot! of time for it. He is a funny guy and very helpful!
Nice guy but terrible teacher. Tries to simplify the topics but then tests 2 levels above. Does not answer emails, does not give helpful study guides and takes forever grading tests. We started out with a class of 26 but ended with just 6. He's frustrating, confusing, unprepared & lazy.
What a terrible teacher! The worst I have ever had. The test are awful completely over stuff not covered in lecture.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!! HE IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL!!
This class was supposed to be ecology but we covered more botany. The tests are graded very hard and you are expected to know things he doesn't go over. Nothing is really organized and he often "forgets" what he tells you. NOT HELPFUL AND NOT RECOMMENDED!
DO NOT TAKE HIM, VERY VERY VERY HARD.
Does not give an objective list untila few days before the test after weeks of lecturing. I do not recommend him at all.
Botany: Very good teacher. He warns everyone that the class will be challenging, so to look over your notes. He's thorough and teaches a very broad subject in just one semester, so it may be info overload for some. If you take good notes during lecture you'll do fine (anything he talks about is fair game for tests, so note everything!)
I WILL NEVER TAKE THIS PROF AGAIN!!! He states several times at the beginning of the semester that organization is the key, unfortuately he is neither organized or timely with material. He does not give objective list in timely fashion nor return graded material in timely fashion.
McMurray is a wonderful, although challenging, professor. Take notes (EVERY word that he speaks and EVERYTHING on powerpoints), utilize all resources he provides on Angel, and study hard. Don't simply try to memorize the material- you need to truly UNDERSTAND the material. Do these things and you'll do fine.
I had him for botany. John is the prof you take if you want a challenge. His test are tough. They require critical thinking skills. I couldn't ask for more out of a prof. He will only will prepare you better for your future. This class will require a lot of out of class room study time. He is straight forward with that. great overall
Very disorganized teaching style. Won't have papers graded until the last day of the semester. and does not follow schedule.
McMurray was a great teacher! The class is hard but you should study and work hard for your grade. He answered all the questions people asked, and is also a very nice professor. His class is not a blow off class that is for sure.
Provides very lmtd. info. compared to what's expected in exam. He talks about his love for Cali. constantly, so much that he is unable to concentrate on imp. topics. The lab exam is all fill in the blank, and he doesn't hand out the lab until that day which gives no time for prep, or understanding -Too much talk, not enough info-fiery attitude
Very hard class. I would never recommend it to anyone. I can't study for my other classes because this one is so difficult. I hate it so much.
I studied very hard for the tests by reading the book and studying my notes and he would but random questions on there. only like 6 out of 30 people in my class passed so.. if you are an expert already in this subject go ahead
He is well versed in almost any Science field and you can tell his intelligence through the material he teaches. This is NOT a "filler" class, this is for serious students studying Biology. Keep up and study a lot. The knowledge you gain from him is worth it. His teaching level is half that of a 4 yr science major class if this is what you are in.
Read this before taking his class. You must know going into this class you will need to know some chem, miro bio, genetics. Lecture is borderline useless, however if you record his lectures then you might have a chance. His slides are vary vauge and do not help. Lab exams are almost imposs to pass. if you take this class good luck and wish you wel
Mcmurray is a very hard professor but I have never been in a class in which I have learned so much. I loved this class. I am very thankful for taking it because now I feel I'm going to be prepared for all my bio classes. This class is very demanding; do not take it if you are looking for an easy A.
ok, well i wish i would of read the reviews before i enrolled in his class. it is REALLY hard. He does not explain material that well. the exams are worded in a way that makes them more difficult. if you are taking a havey load don't take this classs with him, because it requires a lot of time outside of the class room to make a decent grade.
Does not stick with the stated material.test you on stuff that has not been covered and is very un organized..This guy should be working in a lab somewhere and not teaching. Not a bad guy just an absolutely horrible teacher.
I would not recommend taking his course during the summer semester.Too much info for too little time.He is not interested that you know the general idea of processes in biology, he is very technical. His tests are very difficult and poorly written...He words things in a confusing manner. He does not grade papers/test quickly at all.
Botany was one of the best classes, as well as most interesting, I have ever taken. Dr. McMurray makes the class even more enjoyable. The coursework is full of great material and if you are really looking for a huge enhancement in your academics take classes with him! In botany he grades 100-86 A 85-70 B 70-60 C
I took General Botany with McMurray. He was very clear and readily available to answer questions and help the students in any way. He covered topics well in lecture as well as in lab. I find it interesting that the negative reviews of this prof are also the ones that use incorrect grammar, punctuation, and capitalization. His class was enjoyable.
Very clear and articulate lecture, with great visuals on the whiteboard. However, the lecture is not at the difficulty level of the testing. The only test that made sense was the final (prepared by the dept.) Would much rather have been taught at the same difficulty that the test was presented. Felt prepared studying until looking at the tests..
Lecture was inadequate compared to type and level of difficulty of test
Micro summer. Very clear and articulate lectures, with great visuals on the whiteboard. However, the lecture is not at the difficulty level of the testing. Tests had diagrams we had never seen before. Avg class grade on several exams was ~65-70%. Gives bonus points, but not enough to make up for the poorly written exams.
Dr. McMurray is a great professor to take if you enjoy Biology. He is very intelligent and his lectures are fascinating. His tests can be quite difficult though and require you to think critically and recall a fair amount of information. If you plan on majoring in Biology and want to do well in the subject, his class is a must.
He has a tendency to go off topic in lectures or go on and on in one section ad nauseam, which causes the class to fall way behind schedule. Most of the items on his exams were not covered during the lecture nor were they in the assigned reading material. Exam questions were worded more like riddles. Constantly late in returning graded material.
I don't understand why people have trouble in this course. His lectures are thorough and covers all the essentials, yes he strays from the subject from time to time, but he's a great professor. His exams are tough & extremely detailed, but what test isn't?! I find you will be well prepared for exams if you study on your own as well!
General Biology I is a demanding course. For every demanding course, there needs to be a demanding professor. Professor McMurray does a splendid job on covering the material and presenting his lectures. He is very organized. He is also willing to help. He gives bonus points, however, he is very detailed during the grading of exams. I earned an 96%.
Dr. McMurray is a good professor, and he is very intelligent. His class is tough, but it is possible to make an 'A' if you study and complete the extra credit. His tests are quite tough--especially the first two--so you have to really study in order to make a good grade.
This is definitely not a blow-off class or one that you will never need to study for. McMurray uses powerpoints quite often, but the bulk of what you will need to know will be what he writes and draws on the whiteboard. If you pay attention in class, take notes, draw and label the pictures, and study for the tests, you should do well in the class.
I had to study 5x more for Bio than for Chem 1. I still got an A. To pass it isn't just memorizing like some other classes. He is very clear on what to study. Anything on the board is important. Lecture tests mult choice, lab fill in the blank. He's good at emailing you back. I wanted to take him again for Bio 2 and microbiology
He is very slow at grading and getting things back to you (i.e. tests and labs). His lectures are in depth and things he covers aren't really on the tests. Class was way behind and we finished the material the day before the comprehensive final and our last lecture exam (taken on the same day so you couldn't study for the final).
The key to doing well on tests are to look up every learning objective listed. Know the powerpoints by heart. A large portion of the tests are definitions. Lab quizzes are a breeze if you just review the portions he tells you it's over.
He's a great professor! Inspirational lectures and efficiently taught material! However, he is just as tough in grading and his exams are tough.
The class was tough and the quizzes were awful but I did learn.
I did'nt enjoy this class, but with the amount of studying I did I learned some topics very well. His tests are very hard and require studying. He is a slow grader and very bad at answering emails. Over half my class had dropped by the end of the semester. Bio is difficult as it is, but he goes more in depth making it much harder. I don't recommend
He lectures a lot, but we were behind the entire semester. He did not grade our tests, quizzes, or Lab papers in a timely manner. I felt like I didn't know anything until I reviewed the MCAT bio section and knew most of it from this class. Powerpoints are your friends. Do group studying and do not think you know the lab info. You don't. Study!!!
McMurray is an amazing teacher. He is super nice and willing to explain a topic until you understand. The inclass test are easy, just study the powerpoints, and pay close attention to what he writes on the board. The lab tests are a diff story, study hard. I want to take him again, hopefully botany because that is obviously his passion.
If you're expecting a professor who is on top of their grading throughout the semester, Professor McMurray isn't that. After midterms, he fell 8 assignments behind in grading. Soon, 8 turned into 18 and no one had a clue what their grade was by the time the drop date came around. 22/40 students assumed the worst and dropped the class.
He is a tough professor but I learned so much! It is unclear what you will be graded on so you have to study every little detail. Make sure to read the textbook as well because some exam questions are not covered in lecture. Beware his lab exams are extremely tough and the averages were always Ds and Fs. Study, study lab! He loves pictures on exams
I loved my class with Dr. McMurray. He's an amazing lecturer & he genuinely cares about his students. He's such a sweetheart. He is NOT an easy teacher. If you're looking for an easy A, look elsewhere. But if you need to get a solid understanding of biology for future classes, he's perfect. Lots of extra credit. All lecture tests are Scantron.
Great professor. He assigns a lot of work so be prepared to spend a lot of time on this course. He gets way behind grading all the work he gives out. He is very smart and has great lectures. I would suggest buying colored pencils because most of his lectures are colored illustrations. Test are difficult and tricky. He does offer extra credit
I took the summer Micro class and absolutely loved Dr. McMurray! His lectures were engaging and the labs were fun an informative. I would highly recommend him. He is particular about the drawings you do for lab, but when it's lab final time, you realize why he is so particular. I have learned so much in this past 8 weeks. Be ready to study though.
This prof is a smart guy and does amazing drawings on the board to explain things. You will see something that looks totally different on the test. This professor was behind all semester in lecture, grading, & tests/quizzes ended up being taken in the test center. Tests are tough- material not covered well due to all the time spent on diagrams.
I took his microbiology course in the summer. He was late on grading almost everything and going into my final, still had most of our grades NOT entered. He is a nice guy but didn't seem to care about my grade at all. We had 6 exams in the summer which I still haven't figured out why. If you take his class be prepared to have it consume ur life lol
Test were extremely hard and difficult to understand. He does a lot of drawings that will look totally different on the test. He does really care about you passing so that part is totally up to you. He doesn't give encouraging words either. Lectures never really pinpoint anything important so you have to figure out what to study.
Learned so much. GREAT lectures, but if you are not a visual learner you may struggle with all of the diagrams and flow charts. Very patient, all around solid guy. The tests are hard, but an A is doable if you complete all of the extra credit. Slow grader, but generous. You MUST attend class, tests from lecture. Buy older ed. of book, rarely used.
I took Dr. McMurray over the summer and although it was a hard class to take in 8 weeks, it is doable. He gives great lectures and gives extra credit. Be prepared to dedicate some time studying. There is a reason not everyone is a Microbiologist: it's hard! I would highly recommend Dr. McMurray! His tests and quizzes are tough but taking notes help
Guys- It's college. Do not expect this prof (or any other) to hold your hand and spoon feed you. You are an adult. Put the work in, attend class, learn the material, and you will be fine. I took it over the summer and earned an A in the class and I am only an average student. A++ would take again.
He is a great professor. Use your objective lists as study guides, get the answers out of the powerpoint and book. If you don't study you will fail. He cares about you doing well. Make sure you put effort into your lab papers and experiments. Show up to class!! He will work with you. Do the Extra Credit and try.
There are a couple things you need to know about McMurray: he's busy - like all the time, he sometimes doesn't answer emails, he counts off for missing class, and he doesn't grade in a timely manner. Think you know the material for the tests? Think again. HOWEVER, McMurray is a great teacher who wants you to succeed. He does AMAZING lectures.
McMurray is a great instructor who loves to fill the white board with diagrams. Many resources are provided through the online portion of the class, even the power point slide shows which are picture heavy. Slow grader, lectures are very detailed and be prepared to deviate from the course schedule. Lab is fun, extra credit is given.
This class was so awful that afterwards, I changed my major. Professor McMurray is far more concerned with drawing elaborate pictures on the board than actually teaching. Where we were with book, the lectures, and the lab never correlated. He writes his own tests which are confusing and unclear. Memorize his drawings or fail. Hope you can draw.
He is such a great guy and actually wants his students to succeed. His class isn't easy and you definitely have to work for it, but he'll go out of his way to sit down with you and try to help you understand. He also has a great sense of humor which makes everything so much better. Studying + extra credit easy A/B
It's Biology so it isn't going to be a walk in the park. His lectures consist of him drawing a lot so I advise bringing colored pens or something. His tests are difficult. If you think you know the material, think again. Some extra credit is given. Prepare to study for this course. Also, he is VERY slow at putting grades in.
Funny in class, teaches by drawing on the board A LOT then test diagrams look nothing like his, takes forever to grade papers, tough grader and his tests are hard, I think Id like micro if I had taken it with someone else. I would not recouhim for a professor
Absolute worst class I have EVER taken. In fact, I don't even do these reviews, normally. Everything he lectured over. He made so hard and purposely tried to trick you on the exams. I have never in my life not passed an exam at least with a C and I couldn't pass one of his. He is hilarious and fun but do NOT take his class. Just don't.
Professor McMurray is the worst professor I have had in my college experience. Nothing is graded in a timely manner, the semester ends this week, I have no idea what my grade is, and we have 3 exams left. I am not very opinionated but do not take him. I did not learn one single thing. He taught us like we were supposed to know everything already.
Dr. McMurray made our subject interesting and fun to learn. He did an amazing job at reworking our semester in the midst of a pandemic.
For his microbiology class: He provided detailed, not rushed lectures. Some are picture heavy with lots of color (great for visual learners). Very knowledgeable, wants to help. Engaging during labs. Gives specific objectives for lecture & lab exams. Very slow grader. Tough grader on labs, looks for specific answers. Took class during pandemic.
disorganized, slow, poor communication, misses deadlines. We are all online; will not post lectures in time to view them before the weekly test, posts tests late with no warning, will not open multiple lengthy due Wed. assignments until Mon/Tues making it hard on working adults. Tests have NO material from book - all from rambling, long lectures.
Professor McMurray is very knowledgeable of the material he has to teach, but teaching the material to students not so much. He should have been organized, but he was not. Our class was given an extension of a week for the class because he was so behind and he still did not manage to input all of our grades.
Professor McMurray was an absolutely terrible professor to deal with, he was condescending and rude. He didn't grade anything until week 6 of an 8 week class and only after the entire class went to the dean. We never could figure out where his test materials cane from. It wasn't from the long lectures, the objective list, or the book.
This guy is a disaster. He is woefully behind on every aspect of technology. He clearly has never done the labs or any of the assignments associated with the textbook. Lectures are rambling and confusing and he is constantly wandering off camera or writing on a whiteboard that can't be seen or read. Grading is almost non-existent.
the semester is over today at noon. tell me why I have stuff due by the day before christmas. this guy is a mess. I had no idea what my grade was in his class until a week ago. Im not sure if he takes the photos for the exams but he takes them in a way it is almost impossible to tell what animal is it. none of the study material is ever on the exam
Professor McMurray is the most difficult professor I have ever had. The course is very lecture heavy some weeks were 20+ hours of lecture videos, and none of what was discussed in lecture was actually on test material. He does not grade things in a timely manner or give feedback and he will just tell you how busy he is when you reach out for help.
Horrible online professor. Has 12+ hours of lecture videos for EACH exam, none of which covers materials that are actually on the exam. Requires proctoring on all quizzes/exams, which would glitch and shut down mid exams. He did not seem eager to help with these issues. He is knowledgable about microbio, but worst online professor I've taken.
I had a love/hate relationship with this course. It has been one of my favorites for lectures. Professor is enthusiastic, kind, and knowledgeable. However, testing material always seemed to be uncovered. The class was very disorganized, and he was WAY behind on grading. I would take the class again for the lectures/labs, but not for a grade.
I really enjoyed Dr. McMurray bio II class. It was very lecture heavy and with a lot of connect homework. Read the book, lab manual, and take really good notes during lectures and you should be good. If you are struggling I do encourage to go speak with him during his office hours. He is really nice and wants to see his students pass the class.
he's awesome at lecturing but he also gave an insane amount of homework and assignments. you need to be at his lectures because the power point he gave is mostly an outline of what he will lecture. you would also need to be ready to do a lot of connect assignments and lab assignments.
He didnt grade a single assignment for half the semester. He doesnt even check emails .when he give objective list for things to study and he only use like 5-15 out of the 65 and hell give random question on the exam .
You basically have to teach yourself, research on your own a lot, and he waits till the end of the semester to grade anything!
Dr Mcmurray was an excellent teacher. He made sure everyone understood the lessons and made sure we asked questions before he moves on to the next lesson. The only issue I have is the long objective lists for the exams but overall you have chances for extra credit to raise your grades up
He's a great lecturer. However, the exams were about things he hadn't talked about or explained. We would ask him what's on the test so we could review and he would tell us that 80% would be one thing, then its not on the test. He also is very behind on grading constantly and is not reachable outside of class as he has no internet at home (???).
This class was honestly a fun class The professor explained things with clarity and with interest, it is definitely a lecture heavy diagram on the white board class but with attentive learning and studying it is easy to get a decent score on lecture exam. homework and extra credit along with the labs compensate for some low exam and lab exam scores
If you're looking for a blowoff class I'd avoid him, however if you're preparing to take the MCAT I would highly recommend this professor as the depth of study and way that he teaches is highly conducive to ACTUALLY learning the material. My only complaint is that he runs extremely behind on grading homework.
Was great at explaining concepts but seems to get behind really easily. He is very kind and understands things happens. He has extra credit to improve grades. The downside is he is hard to get a hold of out of class because he doesn't have internet at home. Great teacher though, I recommend.
He was an ok professor. He talks a lot during lectures on a singular topic which doesn't help with gathering enough information to prepare for the exams. He never responds to emails, doesn't grade anything, and his objective lists are EXTREMELY LONG. He is nice though but those are some things that I heavily disliked about his class.
It's a tough course, study the objectives for exams thoroughly. My extra credit brought me up 4%. He doesn't have WiFi, go to office hours don't email. He takes a really long time to grade assignments, that's the only real complaint. It's the end of the year and less than half maybe are in. GO TO LECTURE you need his board diagrams to pass.
He's a nice person but he's HIGHLY unorganized and is not easy to get into contact with. The semester has already ended yet more than half of my assignments are ungraded. I sent him recurring emails since the beginning of the semester yet no response. Lab exams are the worst. Lectures are long and heavy yet I can't find info from my notes for exams
He's very slow to grade, highly disorganized, slow to respond to emails. He gets off schedule, fails to open assignments on time, and god maybe it's just me but his lectures take something out of me every lecture. Despite this he's very friendly and always willing to help. SB HW & pre-lab every week btw. If you truly struggle w/biology don't take.
The content of the class is overall understandable, however his lectures can be confusing to keep up with. He is slow with grading. Any diagrams he may have drawn in lecture will 100% be on exams- so study up on those. Despite inconsistencies, he is a really great guy- you can tell he loves biology and cares about student success.
Study study study all the notes, if it was said in lab or lecture it will be on the exams. He is really good on opening up all the smart books and homeworks for you, just very late on grading. Overall I really liked him and he's passionate about what he teaches.
