First of all, he is a really nice guy, who loooooooooves his math! The problem is, he really knows his math, but he just does not know how to teach it very well. His tests come straight from his notes, which is good, but if you have a hard time with math, he may not be the best teacher for you.
Professor McNutt is one of the few gems at VCC. Taking STA2023 with him was a wonderful experience & I highly recommend him to anyone who doesn't exactly favor math. I'd taken the class before on West Campus with Professor Need-a-Therapist (earning a D). After taking Professor McNutt, I got an A! If you want to be challenged and learn, TAKE HIM!
Very nice and helpful. A little hard to follow sometimes, but he is willing to stop and explain.
I just finished my stats class with prof. mcnutt and it was a pleasure to have him as my teacher! Statistics is definitely hard to understand but he made it as easy as possible! He's not a big fan of the book we used (Modeling the World) so that makes it hard sometimes with homework. Other then that he will go out of his way to help anyone!!!
He is awesome- funny in a geeky way. Always willing to help and tries to give plenty of examples... I thought he was great and I enjoyed his class!
I had Mr.McNutt for Intermediate Algebra. While he might have been a great teacher for Stat, he was not for Intermediate Algebra. He is a very smart guy but often talked above our heads and made things hard to understand. I learned 90% of the course by going to the SPA center. I often left the class frusterated.
Great teacher, very patient, gives lots of extra credit, holds many reviews prior to tests, trys hard to get everyone to pass, would recommend
McNutt is has a VERY weird personality but an overall nice guy. Tests are NOT mult choice you must study, he doesnt give study guides but gives you assumptions of what will be on the test. First 10 questions are definitions(study them).HW is extra credit(4points)optional and gives ec on the tests.4 tests (80%),final IS comprehensive (20%).
i took mcnutt for stats and your grade is based only on 4 tests and a final. he gives extra credit on test and 4 points extra credit for homework which is like 5 chapters per test. the test are NOT mult choice and does notgive study guides. i am very good at math, my fav subject and i had a hard time in this class. he goes over material that isnt e
You basically have to teach yourself. He doesn't clearly identify what specific topics to study for the tests, but he's very generous with partial credit and gives plenty of opportunities to earn extra credit as well. This saved my butt because I'm terrible at math and still managed to pass with a high C.
Professor mcnutt is a wonderful person. He really knows his math but he has no business teaching... Take about an hr on trying to explaing one problem. Does not provide study guides and the test are hard. On the other hand he will stay after class to answer any questions, 4pts extra credit for HM and partial credit...
I've taken him twice, one for Intermediate Alg. in College Math. He's a great teacher who cares about his students. Tests are pretty easy as long as you study. I would defently take him if you want a good grade.
I loved this teacher! Hes super nice and friendly, tests are fair, he lets you know EXACTLY whats on them so you have a heads up. He gives you multiple chances to ask questions if you dont understand. He is a bit hard to get ahold of outside of class so ask questions before you leave. He grades VERY VERY fairly! I absolutely recommend him 100%! = )
I love this guy. He's a little scatter brained, but he's super kwoledgable and will re-explain things as many times as necessary. Yes, he takes a while to explain things, but if he rushed through everything, ppl would complain that he doesn't explain anything. HW is extra credit, labs are usually doing practice problems. He wants you to learn.
Professor McNutt is definitely a smart guy and sometimes he gets a bit ahead of himself, but he's awesome at breaking things down if you ask. He's very willing to help out any student! Like others have mentioned, he offers extra credit & partial credits so he really wants you to pass.
if you have no idea what statistical method is, then dont even try his class...Its all about cofusedness...good luck!!!
He is a great teacher but his stats class has way too much detail for an entry level class. I did not do well. Grade is based on 5 test scores and 16 homework points.
McNutt is GREAT. The ONLY complaint i even had would be he grades TOO EASILY! Listen im not saying i didnt study, if you dont your not going to do well because stats isnt easy, i dont care how great the professor is. He takes his time and is very flexible with your time if you cant make it on test day.
Good Guy.. Took Physics on Sunday from 8:00 - 1:45. Made it hard to lean anything. Very easy grader. Barely studied and got an A. Allowed cheat sheet for exams. Do HW and get 4pts added on to your test. Offered extra credit on tests. Allowed choice on problems to do on test. Hard to reach outside of class especially for a sunday class. Take him tho
This professor is awesome! He LOVES math and wants everyone to pass. I am HORRIBLE at math and passed his class with flying colors. He definitely takes his time to teach you ANYTHING you dont know or need help on. He stays after class for anyone and gives tests straight from his notes. If he didnt cover it, yits not on the test. TAKE HIM!
Great Professor! Very helpfull, if you still dont understand he will contiue to go over till you do. Stays after class and also continues to help students. Has a passion for his class and work. Take his class, if you have trouble with math.
One of the worst professors for Physics w/ Calc. He knows what he is talking about but cannot teach. Do not take him if you're an engineer or science major. You will not learn much and tests are difficult because they're asked differently than the ones he shows in class. He speeds through the material and sometimes goes over 2 chapters in one class
Had him for PHY2048 and 2049. The test problems are taken directly from his lecture examples. Allows you to have a note sheet during tests. Homework problems count as extra credit. If you take good notes, pay attention to his examples, and make a good note sheet you could get 100% on every test without learning anything. Don't believe the whiners.
Professor is very respectful to everyone, wants you to learn. Best 4 of 5 tests are counted. HW is extra Credit, gave us extra credit one day, Labs are graded fair. Overall a great professor, wish i would have taken more classes with McNutt as he's got many degrees and knows what he is talking about
Professor McNutt was one of my best professors during the Summer. Best 4 out of 5 tests. Final Exam is mandatory. Extra credit homework assignments. He is extremely knowledgable and is willing to stay after class to help out his students. He knows the material and references the book for extra clarity if needed. Best class! I would recommend!!
Professor McNutt is very well organized and a very skilled instructor. Reviews the testable material before each test, gives credit for homework, will drop the worst test and answers questions. He is VERY knowledgable of the material and expalains it so you can understand. An EXCELLENT teacher very enthused about the subjects. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Not a bad instructor, definitely loves mathematics. He can get a little lost in his own tangents at times and you as a student must be aware when this happens because things can get a little confusing. Lots of extra credit given out and tests are somewhat predictable. Very respectful and he strives to give as many real world examples possible.
Although attendance wasn't mandatory, I highly recommend going regularly. The material can be challenging, but it's much easier if you attend all/most classes. Prof. McNutt is very knowledgable about the subject, offers lots of extra credit, and is extremely kind, respectful and helpful to students. Great class!
I should not have taken him. Hard to keep up with him. He over explains everything which gets confusing. I found easier ways to find the same answer he would get with less work. He confuses everything. I'm not taking him for 1054. I am barely passing with a C right now. Stay away unless you love physics or already have a good understanding or it.
Worst teacher on the face of this planet. He loses every single paper he has and messes up everyone's grades. He skips around chapters, then comes back to them, revises the syllabus at least 3 times. Tests are always unbearable and include everything that was not taught. If you are only taking this class because of your majors requirements, avoid!
Very nice professor, will help you during his office hours whenever you need it. Treats students with 100% respect. His tests can get difficult but he's very lenient with the grading and gives plenty of partial credit. Go to class, pay attention, ask questions, do the extra credit, and you're golden. I have so much respect for this professor.
This teacher is a sweet heart. He loves his subject and its very apparent. I took him both semesters, he doesn't follow the textbook as much as alot of professors, but he tries to explain his concepts the best he can. He tests on what he teaches, not on what is in the book. Attendance isn't mandatory but you should ALWAYS show up. Very sweet man.
This is a difficult course in general. Prof offers help after class and extra credit. Although it is not required, go to class. He provides many handouts, which you will be tested on. Textbook is required. Does not use blackboard and slow to respond to e-mails. Pleasant and respectful to students.
He does have a tendency to get lost in some tangental topics while lecturing, but he is excellent at explaining and deriving the formulas and information. I recommend him as he is passionate about teaching.
He is neither the easiest nor the hardest professr. At times he tends to go off on tangents. He allows you to make a formula sheet for tests. But sometimes the questions he asks are either very unique, make you have to think beyond the norm, or may just be very lenghty and easy to get lost in all the variables he throws in.
Horrible. He lets you use your own formula sheets each test but it was pointless for me because the questions on the test were always twisted from what he taught in class & he doesn't teach from textbook; pointless to buy it unless you want extra credit for homework. Valencia really needs to get professors that can TEACH not just know the subject.
Mcnutt is horrible. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He lets you use a cheat sheet for your tests so if you don't take him for physics II you won't pass. Also, in my notes there are sentences that just stop or incomplete problems because he will start talking about something else. If you don't learn by having a problem full of variables you're screwed.
Not a great teacher. Very unorganized. Doesn't use the textbook, so studying is a bust. Isn't clear during lectures. Goes off on tangents and leaves examples incomplete. Allows cheat sheets on tests but it's pointless anyways because you won't even understand your notes. If you take him, good FREAKING luck!!!
Bad professor, very disorganized. One test will have 3 chapters, the next will have 7 . He expects you to cram all chapters, his hand outs, homework problems and everything else he said for each test. Give EC for homework but its negligible. Doesnt allow early leaving. Labs are cool, everything else sucks.
Statistics sucks, but Prof McNutt made it interesting. I got a B (which says a lot since "C" was my goal). You will need the textbook. He gives partial credit on tests and all the right answers to chapter test. You get to use a cheat sheet for the final, so if you fail the class you have to really just not try.
A terrible instructor hard to follow and understand not a fair grader. He doesn't seem to want to help students. he teaches like an engineer and expects you to know everything. The homework isn't worth do it. In the tests he grades all and leaves 2 questions out don't see how that helps even if you answer it and have it right it won't count.
Horrible Professor. I alrady graduated from UCF but need this class for pre-req for grad school. His tests are only 4 - 6 questions and lets you answer any 3 or 4. I got 2 out of 4 wrong and I failed the test. His teaching is all over the place and doesn't make the info easy to understand. Take Murphy for stats instead.
I took McNutt for stats, not a good teacher. He is smart but has terrible delivery. There was no online learning program to go with the class so the student had to rely on him to teach. My biggest problem is he blends the chapters. E.g. chap 10,12,2,3,4,5, test on 10 12,3,5 then chap 7,8,14,1,12,11,16 then test 1,2,5,18,6,11,3 so on unorganized!
smart guy, but terrible delivery, 4 test and a final that counts 30% of your grade and 15% each test and will not drop one. HE goes off topic a lot. DO NOT take him. Test are not easy.
WOW! I absolutely loved this professor. Exams are exactly based on his lectures and reviews. He is there to help and will help until you understand it. I took phy with another professor and got a C. I took it with this professor barely studied and passed. ITs bc his lectures are so great that you barely have to study. Would def recommend him
Took physics 2 at the west campus and failed miserably. Took physics 2 with this professor in the summer and passed so easily! He knows how to teach and make students understand. Do yourself a favor and take this guy!
Took him for physics 2 and most of the class dropped it before the deadline, this class is far from easy and he does give a lot of extra credit which is probably why i passed. I got 100's on all of the labs, very easy. the amount of material in the class is insane, 4 or 5 chapters per test sometimes more. the test material comes from his lectures!
The professor is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, however this is a tough course. Expect to read on your own and practice on your own, he explains theory and concepts but its up to you to apply it. Labs are easy and fun, 4 exams and final and you are allowed notes, but even then this was my hardest class ever.
I was very intimidated by this class at first, but as it went on it got better. HW is optional but worth EC on tests. You get a formula sheet on each test. Final is comprehensive and 30% of your grade. Lab is easy, get that A. And go to class, tests come from notes. You'll need the book for homework and for figures. I enjoyed this class, hes great!
This was my first A in a math-related course. You do have to show up to every class, but the notes will show up almost verbatim on the tests and final. Tests were 10-14 q's, you're allowed to not answer 2. Ask to have notes with the final! He also gives easy extra credit. He isn't always the best at explaining, but he tries and is a nice guy.
Grades were based on 4 tests, labs, & final, & hw was only 2 extra credit pts on each test. His lectures are monotonous & notes are unclear. Tests are extremely hard & never know what to expect on them or how to study. Whole semester I didn't knew the grade & when asked he gave a formula to calculate it. Barely passed the class with C-. Dont take!!
He tries to explain but the fact that he only give you the formulas and he never do an example with number in class always confuses you so much! you need to do a lot of examples so you can understand something on the class.
I'll admit, sometimes Professor McNutt gets lost in his own examples, and the pace of the course is a little wonky (5 chapters by midterm, leaving 15 more chapters to cover before finals), but his lectures are awesome. He breaks things down bit by bit, often demonstrating the proofs of equations. His tests are super easy, and he gives E.C.
This professor is horrendous at delivery, he is so monotonous that it makes you lose interest so easily. His tests are way harder than the examples shown in class, but some questions are straight out of the notes. Covered 9 chapters all semester, and then 8 a week before the final! I advice you to look for another professor..
Probably the most confusing professor I've ever had in college. The final was worth 30% of the grade so you can easily be dropped an entire letter grade in one fail swoop. Decided to race through 8 chapters the last two weeks of class. Would look for someone else.
write down everything he says during lectures! Could be a little difficult to follow his examples sometimes but not impossible. He goes with the book so you can always go back and read that. Topic sheets are a huge help to know whats coming on the exam. Labs are super easy and cheat notes are allowed in exams. Final is worth 30% of the grade.
Very smart and super nice guy who cares about learning and about his students but his teaching is complete trash. He's unorganized, goes off in tangents, isn't clear, and isn't concise. Cannot follow him or properly take notes/organize notes as he is constantly jumping between chapters. Super great person but terrible teacher.
Worst professor Ive ever had Tells you to study homework from the textbook but his questions are completely different and dont even resemble the homework Doesnt give you any examples in class Only a picture and a formula to memorize Doesnt have enough time to cover 18 chapters in 1 semester and will put stuff on the final even if he didnt cover it
holy moly this guy is nice and all but sooo boring and hard to pay attention to :( i hope i pass with at least a C. the tests are too long for an hour and a half time he gives and they dont resemble much that he teaches in class. he gives a bit of extra credit, attendance was not mandatory and no homework. just tests and labs. super nice guy though
Professor McNutt is the nicest professor you'll ever have. Unfortunately, he doesn't give his class much direction as to what will be on the tests, does not give any useful homework, and does not describe things well in class. An amazingly nice person, but only a very specific type of student could thrive in his classes.
This professor is kind and truly wants to help you, he will go extra lengths to make sure you understand. That being said, I still failed every class. No, I'm not joking. Tutoring, reading, studying, making a study guide, talking to professor after hours, nothing helped. I still failed every test. Yet I still passed the class somehow.
I'm not even done with the class, but he's so lenient with his simple assignments. Honestly just come in and have fun.
Overall, Professor Mcnutt was a very caring and sweet guy. But, his class online was terrible. Many assignments delayed, the assignments felt more tedious than fun, and overall many people did not learn much during this semester with him. I am assuming it is because of Covid, but I will not recommend for you to take him online at all.
He doesnt teach and he grades slow. Also he words quizzes/tests bad to a point you where you wont understand what the question is asking. The homework was easy thats what made me pass but dont take his class
I took him for Astronomy and it was okay. He often messes up questions on tests or doesn't give info and his homework ended up consisting of 50 reading questions every week. He didn't really make the class interesting and instead, it was all just a chore. I learned nothing. It's an easy class but he made it incredibly uninteresting and boring.
A great professor that truly wants his students to learn and succeed. He was always accessible outside of class and made time to address students concerns. A great choice for a physics professor!
He's nice enough & enjoys physics, but his class was so difficult & boring. His lectures didn't help b/c he never introduced subjects, just made up confusing challenge problems on the board for 3 hours? He expects you to teach yourself & know all 17 chapters in depth. The tests were too hard & you never knew what he was asking. Do not recommend.
If there is an alternative, don't take this professor. Otherwise, this one is fine. Assignments due on Tuesday, which may throw off some people. The class was easy for me, as I never touched the book or the reading pages that the professor gives for the quizzes. However, often times there were mistakes in the quizzes, and far too many quizzes.
This class was fairly easy, with all assignments & tests being open-book & answers can be found online or in the textbook. The way the questions on quizzes were worded was often confusing & many times I couldn't find the answers anywhere, so my score would be lower. He is kind & responsive, & gives many extra credit ops.
There are 3 weekly quizzes, but everything comes directly from the textbook.
Terrible Professor took him my first semester of college now I have to re take this class but definitely not with him! 0/10 save yourself the time.. best of luck to all
Everything is directly from the textbook. He also does a lot of extra credit, which really helps. Nice teacher and enjoys teaching the material.
Very nice professor. This course was very interesting. All of the material is from the textbook. He offers many extra credit opportunities. There are many quizzes but all the information needed to succeed on the quizzes is in the textbook. He responds to emails and wants to make sure you understand and succeed.
McNutt is a nice guy, but beware; he is VERY hands-off. In this class, you will have 30+ tests and quizzes and only 2-3 actual assignments (at most). Thankfully they are open-note and open-book (if you take this class online). I suggest you stick to the textbook like glue and take advantage of extra credit opportunities if you want to succeed.
Seems like a nice smart guy but not a teacher. Module pages/notes are minimal and confusing. Equations and diagrams not explained enough. OpenStax, I need a little more explanation than a textbook. I never could go to any of his meetings, which is why I choose online. Quiz Qs are on the final, complete all the quizzes to see the answers to study.
The professor is very willing to work with you, mainly through zoom calls. The way he has his virtual class set up is very difference from most professor. For this reason, I decided to drop out earlier as it was pretty confusing and I would rather find an professor that just has a more simple set up with the book for the class.
There is 30+ quizzes for no reason. The notes aren't that great, you really need the textbook but it's super long. If you're lazy look for a more engaging class. It's really just busy work. And there isn't a lot of extra credit, only 3 so far, 1 was literally like 8 pages long.
**I took him for PHY1007 but it wasn't an option. Don't be intimidated during the first week, it may seem like a lot but you will be fine! The way he sets up his course, you have to try to fail. His exams aren't bad if you do your formula sheet & he gives many extra credit opportunities. Hand outs are a life saver for exams! Lovely man overall.
It is mainly quizzes and exams, but they are all open-book and multiple-choice. There were a couple of other assignments. He offers extra credit opportunities. His online class is slightly unorganized. There are multiple modules per week you have to do and his notes had incomplete information. Stick to the book and you will be fine
For Physics with Medical Applications, during lectures, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking notes ON the handouts he gives you and using them to study for the exams. Most of the material from the handouts is on the exams. During labs, don't be afraid to ask for help; he's so passionate about teaching he doesn't mind helping for a prolonged time.
he is great if you study the quizzes the exams were really similar he is really helpful with the labs because they were a bit confusing but overall he is great and helpful with anything I needed extra help. All quizzes and exams were open book so it made it helpful and a challenging at the same time:) take himmmm
60% of grade lies on weekly quizzes and exams (30% weight each). Confusing lectures and hops over material, expects you to read more than one textbook, unfinished notes on Canvas and handouts. Unlike what's been said, quizzes are open note, exams are not, and very little extra credit. By far the worst professor I had. Labs are the only good part.
Definitely take him for Physics! he gives you handouts and l noticed that some of the questions appear on the test! He also literally let us use 20 pages of notes (front and back) on the final and 10 front and back on two others! Only negative is the lectures are a bit all over the place. He is the most caring guy ever and he wants you to succeed!
You'll definitely find the subject matter interesting, but the way it's presented is just underwhelming. It really hurts to see an interesting topic being given the dignity of largely unfinished Canvas modules, mindless and often extremely confusing quizzes, and a real lackadaisical attitude towards creating an interest in Astronomy.
This is a FAIR WARNING. PHY2053C is already hard to begin with. Prof McNutt had a ton of papers to give out during lab (like 20 pages). You have to learn everything ON YOUR OWN. His canvas setup is unfinished and honestly an unorganized disaster. Extremely harsh on grading. Miss a test? Forget it, you're cooked anyway. Thick accent. DONT DO IT ! !
Don't take him for Physics. He's a horrible professor. He's smug and smirks like it's funny when people in class are confused. You ask for help and he tells you to read the textbook like thanks man I never thought of that. Half of the class failed his first test. By this point I had enough and dropped it. Physics is hard it's worse with him.
Lots of quizzes, usually 2-3 a week and they're usually based off of the textbook. There's also canvas modules for the lectures, but they are kind of unorganized and unfinished. There are a few discussions throught the course. He also gives a couple of extra credit assignments.
Course number: PHY1007C I took physics with medical applications with this professor, and this is his second year of teaching this class as he mentions. I would say that this was the worst professor I came across in Valencia. I do not recommend this professor at all, and his teaching style does not help anyone to improve.
His tests barely have any numbers. He only cares about the derivations. He also takes up all the class time he can so 2 hour lectures are rough.
