Menzie's class is the best. His quizzes are the easiest all you have to do is study the notes. I didn't even find any use for the textbook. I recommend not spending $120 on the book just go off your notes and I recommend this class. Excellent!
THIS CLASS IS FUN AND VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND. HIS NOTES ARE GREAT THEY ARE NICE AND CLEAR AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS STUDY THEM AND YOU'LL DO GREAT ON THE EXAMS. THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE TEXTBOOK HIS LECTURES ARE ENOUGH. GREAT INSTRUCTOR I WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND HIM TO MY FRIENDS
Pretty easy class. Take notes and show up to the lectures and you'll pass the class. Just make sure to study for the tests and be very detailed in your long response answers, you'll be fine. The quizzes are really easy. You don't need the textbook for the lecture but if you're enrolled in the lab you will need it.
Good class, the instructor makes it interesting, and entertaining. Lectures are very clear, and he will go over anything with you if you need help. I didn't take the lab so can't comment on that part but I enjoyed the class; you had to put some time in, but it wasn't all that difficult. Instructor highly recommended.
he's horrible
Menzies ROCKS. This dude is awesome. He doesn't get pissed about anything. His class is clear and all you do is take lecture notes and study those. Book? what book? forget the book save your money !! Take this guy hands down!!!!
This class was a straight-forward and interesting. Menzies is a great professor whose education allows him to present the material with clarity. If you study the lecture notes from class, the test multiple choice and essays are extremely easy. I learned a lot and am considering majoring in Geography because of this class. Good****.
This guy made the class so interesting. He's witty and funny. Don't bother buying the book, you will not need it. The lectures will give you all the notes you will need to succeed. Attendence is important because of the massive note taking, but it is an easy A if you are dedicated to taking good notes and studying them. I would highly recomend him.
easy class, lots of journals, quizes, information you have to memborize for each. Not recommend taking again.
His grading is rediculous in my opinion. He gets highly irritated if you don't answer his questions when he lectures. For those who just want to take notes and get the class over with he isn't the professor for you. Essay are a big deal to him they are worth more than the mulitple choice and he doesn't give you a heads up on essay questions.
Menzies is annoying. He doesn't help you at all and wants you to do all his crap correctly. The class itself is easy, he's just irritating.
Dr. Menzies pencil whoops you!You recieve a lot better score in his class if he simply drops his essay part. suggestion someone please tell him to quit felling his students. He is your worst enemy not his class.would have recieved a whole letter grade better however he gave me straight F's on the essay part.. Thank God I passed his class on MY OWN!
There is soo much work. And I withdrawaled because I could not stand him. I do not recommend him at all.
Very intelligent guy. He has a PH.D and is not even 30 yet! Just show up to class and do all assignments and journals. I failed every test even though I studied but I did all the extra credit I could. I recommend you take this class with a close friend so you can tutor eachother. The class was interesting but not easy!I still passed!
Professor Menzies is a nice guy. If you study the notes he gives in the class you will do fine. The people that are giving him a bad score just don't study the notes. You have to study for at least an hour or two for a quiz and even longer for a test, but he is a good teacher and actually makes you think about the subject.I recommend this class.
Great Teacher,if you study the notes and turn in all the journals you'll pass with a good grade. He is very easy.
This guy is a GREAT teacher because he's not mean and doesn't take everything too seriously. Very good lecturer and speaker and doesn't assign much homework!!
The class is really easy, but he's not a very good lecturer. He basically just reads what is on the power-point. You don't have to use the book AT ALL. Just study your notes for the test and you'll get 100. You have to do 2-page journals and have short, easy quizzes, and you'll get full credit for the journals if you just turn them in.
Warning: Do no pay $120 for that book! You will not use it and they will not buy it back (they use a new edition every year). Take good notes and study before quizzes. The quizzes are harder than test because they are T/F and 2 short answer. If you realize this early on, you'll study hard for the quiz and study little for tests. Good notes are key!
Don't buy the book. The only hw is 1 pg. journals and he lets you pick the topic. Tests and quizzes are on lectures. Quizzes are easy 10 t/f q's. A couple short answers. & a couple essay q's. Powerpoints can go on forever though.
This class is easy. Menzies is nice, and he keeps classtime fairly interesting)(although lectures can be boring).
I failed his class because of my own fault. He is really hot though .... worth attending every class meeting.
You must attend every class. Dr Menzies lectures every class, and the information is vital to quizes and tests. The tests are very easy- on scantrons, and you are given a couple chances to get extra credit. Also, do the journals, they are easy points. He may speak to the class like they are 1st graders, but this makes it easy to learn the info.
he is so intelligent and great to have teacher who is understanding about situations. He is very attractive and a good lecturer. you will learn a lot like I did.
Menzies is a GREAT professor and he's also pretty cute. He keeps class fun and interesting. Things are always clear and he just generally seems like a cool guy. It comes across in class. Plus he LOVES hockey!!! Huge bonus!
You never use your book except for citation in the journals. All of his tests are straight from the notes, so study them and you'll fly through the class. He is kinda dorky but that is why I liked him. :] Awesome down to earth and fun loving guy! Deff recommend.
Awesome professor! I wish I could take more classes with him. He makes the material easy to comprehend and he is real nice to look at. Take good lecture notes and you will do fine. Journals are a must if you want an "A".
Must attend class. Easy class presents notes in power point fashion. Answers all questions. Very Straight forward. Test's and Quizzes Straight from the notes. Couple good study hours before each test and you'll be good.
OK,lets be honest. There are a lot of notes, and you must write down examples at the same time. Good luck. He's a nice and knowledgeable instructor, but you will work hard. Hey, ya gotta learn.
Great, easy, class! 8 quizzes, 7 2 page journals, 3 exams, and a final. Everything is straight from the notes. the quizzes have 2 short answer questions, which are simple as long as you read the notes, and then 10 T/F. Journals are easy points, grades leniently. You can get by without the text, but it's AMAZING, and need it for journal citations.
I loved this class! I had no idea geography could be so interesting! His lectures are crystal clear. If you only write down what's on the power points you'll have all the information you need. He's got a great sense of humor, and a pretty lenient grader. Essay questions on quizzes are the toughest part, but they're straight from the notes too.
Do NOT recommend! If you need a science w/ a lab just take geology! Too many subjects covered in this class, and he is very arrogant and belittling to people in the class. He does not want to help, and grading is way too subjective!
I don't know why people say this is hard. He barely covers any detail, just the basics. He gladly answers any questions. Just pick a different lab class.
I'm glad that I took GEOG B1. The quiz is a little difficult ^_^ But if you keep up with lecture notes, you shall have no problem to pass the class with a good grade.
Majoring in Geography because of this guy! You cannot go wrong! Everything is from the notes, not hard at all!
This class is terrific, take good notes and read text you will do fine. He is very laid back and I learned so much from the lectures. He has a great sense of humor, one very cool guy! If you didn't love science before this you will leave psyched about the world!
Chill professor. Everything from the notes. Not difficult at all.
I had him for the lecture and lab class, and have considered taking the courses again just because it was a great class. He is a really great professor & is always willing to help. He could make the lectures fun & worth attending. Very nice & smart professor, can be quite nerdy from time to time but that only adds to his allure. He's very hot too!
Menzies is a great professor & I would definitely recommend him. He is smart, funny, cute, nice, dorky (in a totally cute way), & loves hockey as well as good music. He's also very helpful if you have any questions or need further clarification. I wish he taught more than just B1 lecture and lab.
Easy class, easy A! he has really cuteee and nice personality! Do the extra credit at the end of the semester, and study for the little quizzes, one quiz every two weeks!exams are easy,70 mutiple choices!
Good Professor. Need a science class take Geography with Menzies, he's the best ever period. Live Long and Prosper Dr. Menzies
He is very nice and funny. It is a relatively easy class if you study the lecture notes -- everything is based on those. Wouldn't recommend missing a lecture or a lab. You'll need the textbook for some parts of the lab and to use as a source in your papers, but I never read it. He made the subject interesting and fun. I'd take his class again.
Great professor! Took the lecture and the lab. Both classes are relatively easy. Simply follow his lecture notes. Didn't use the textbook much, but we did use the atlas often. Pretty easy tests too.
Dr. Menzies is very dry and boring. His lectures will put you to sleep. One quiz and 2 page journal due every week. You must study in order to pass this class. The book is rarely used so make sure you take good lecture notes
Really good teacher. The lectures were pretty long and boring but necessary. He loves geography which makes the class better. His tests and quizzes come straight from the lecture notes. Study and you pass. Pretty good looking also.
I dislike this professor. He is so boring. Not easy at all. He gets annoyed with his students as well.
Hard but you'll learn
I learned a lot of basic stuff in his classes is more than just about maps. Very good notes study the notes will pass the quiz come to review before the test study and from that you'll pass the test nothing Overheart hardest part of class is turning in your paper for each chapter you have to do one page with 3 sources But not hard at all. You do not have to take the lab to get it an A this class unlike biology.
Dr. Menzies is excellent and funny. He tells nerdy examples to help students remember the material. His exams are almost entirely from the PowerPoints, but write down extra info he mentions. Grading is straightforward. Short papers were easy, just make sure you meet requirements (length/sources). The textbook is very helpful, though technical.
The key to passing this class is to study all of the notes from the lectures. All of his tests and quizzes come straight from the notes. He can be pretty boring, but it is easy. Every chapter you have to write a 2 page paper with 3 sources, but that's about it. The subject matter was interesting at times, I would suggest this class.
Menzies is very funny and clear when lecturing. You've got 8 quizzes with 10 TF ?'s and 2 short essay ?'s, 7 2-pg papers, and 4 70-multi choice exams (incl. final). Everything is from lectures. Memorize terms from them and you've got your A. The papers are fairly easy, spent an hour on each. Overall, a very good class. Menzies makes it that way.
He is very clear on what he wants from the students. You either do the work or you don't. If you don't understand just ask and he will tell you. After taking his class I appreciated Geology more.
Dr. Menzies is a cool and chill professor who provides crystal clear lectures as well as all class info such as the syllabus. He is clear about EVERYTHING! He is weird, but in a good way. He is mysterious and handsome. His class is not extremely difficult like other science classes. Science is my weak subject, but so far I am learning and passing.
don't miss class. you have (8) quizzes, (7) papers that have to be 2 pgs long each, (3) test plus a final exam. Class is easy but don't lag on the quizzes they can hurt your grade. Take notes of all his power point lectures (STUDY) because quizzes and tests will be based on them. He is crystal clear on his lectures :) "THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX" LOL
I took his lecture twice and lab once. He's honestly a really great teacher, but he's just a little awkward. He's really cute, adventurous, dorky, love hockey and Wayne Gretzky, and he loves to talk about music. His lectures aren't very long and the notes are tedious. The test is a spitting images of what you learn in class. Study for quizzes!!!!!!
Great professor. A little awkward but uses humor which is a plus. Lectures can be dry but this is essentially an earth science course. There are seven two page papers , quizzes , three exams, and a final. If you study the notes, do the papers, and show up, and be attentive you are sure to get a good grade in the class.
Quirky, laid-back professor, keeps class kind of light. Textbook seems optional, never cracked it, quizzes, exams, and final are all from lectures. 10pg research paper. Expects you to know the material but as long as you show up and take notes you should be fine. Would take Menzies again. Lab was good: group work, reinforces lecture materialcalle
By the book. hates cheaters. eyes like a hawk. pretty fair grading. always happy to explain further. encourages questions. rarely smiles. scantrons needed.
Everything you need to learn is from the lectures. Don't buy the book since you only really need the book for lab not the lectures. He uses powerpoints and all the quizzes and exams are based off the powerpoints so write everything down. Study for the quizzes. Exams are easy. For lab, you do group work for every lab and lab takes about 2-3 hours.
No homework, however not much goes into your grade. 8 quizzes, 3 exams, 1 final, 1 10-page research paper. It is ALL based on the lectures so pay attention and take good notes. He is accessible for questions and help. Science is not my subject but I recommend Menzies. Tough class if you don't fancy science. Just study.
Study, study, study. If you study the notes you take in class, you will be fine! Do not buy the book. Not necessary. Always serving that long sleeve shirt under short sleeve shirt look. Nice guy. No homework but very quiz heavy, so make sure you study. Seating chart. One 10-page paper due. Surprisingly learned a lot in here.
This professor had his ups and downs. He can be real annoyed with students at times. Depending on his mood. I believe other students noticed that and were a bit discouraged to ask further questions. Everytime students attempted to ask him questions, he would give student the most bland statements that confused them. I dont recommend this professor.
This guy knows how to teach! I was not interested in the subject matter at first, but have found the information super useful outside of class. I still refer to his teaching. He tells you everything you need to know- whats on the tests, when papers are due, how to get extra credit. Hes organized and concise. Little effort, huge payoff.
I would take Menzies again. I have enjoyed his class. Yes, it's a little tough, however if you take notes from the power points you will do fine. All the quizzes are based off his lectures.
I've taken this class twice, the first time not seriously. His tests are entirely his power points, i recommend making up questions that go with the notes, quiz yourself this way and you will do fine. Its all memory, that being said show up! Dont bother buying the book, professors are required to have a required book, I didnt open mine once.
Lectures from PowerPoint slides: this is all you need for quizzes & exams. There is a quiz almost every week, with T/F questions & writing two paragraphs. Three exams & then the final. The lectures were uninteresting to me, but a science major might enjoy them. There is a 10 pg essay, but it's worth less than a single exam; you choose from 3 topics
Use flashcards if you have issues retaining information, then study because majority of your grade will be based off of what you remember via quizzes and exams. I didn't start studying until week 4 which impacted my final grade. I really enjoyed his lectures & his exasperation is hilarious to witness lol. 10/10
Professor Menzies's class is a solid choice because you will know on day one what to study, when things are due, and how they are completed. As you go throughout the semester, there will be no surprise quizzes or due dates, and work will be graded fairly. He is passionate about his job, he not once missed class, and he taught well. Work hard 2 pass
So rude if you are not interested in this study he does NOT like you and will not help you to pass. Ive ask multiple times for him to help me understand more and he is legit a jerk about it. Also missed one quiz because I was in the hospital with prof and he still would not let me make up due to me not giving him notice
Tbh. I wish the quizzes were multiple choice. The quizzes are 10 true or false& 2 essay questions each. This is the first class I've taken that has challenged me. I'm very good at memorizing. But this professor adds a subject from the notes from different chapters into the true or false questions from one quiz! No HW but you should study & memorize
Horrible experience.
I did not have a good experience with this professor throughout the entire semester. I Would not recommend this professor. Does not work well with his students.
would not recommend
Not a good professor
Dr. Menzies, Is a great teacher. He gives a clear grading criteria right from the start. Only one research paper to write. Gives one extra credit assignment near the end of the semester. I would recommend him to other students. I would definitely take him again. He is very accomendating to people with disabilities.
Cool lectures, the subject it self isn't too exciting but he managed to make it pretty interesting.
You have to work hard if you want an A or B. I made flashcards for every quiz and exam. 8 quizzes, 3 exams, final exam, research paper. For the paper, you only write 10 pages, 8 references, and you will get 100%. Quizzes are T/F and 2 short answers. They can be tricky. I studied ALOT for this class and got an A. But I never slacked off.
Make sure you find good partners for this class. If you accidentally pair up with someone who slacks off, I would immediately find a new group; this class is dependent on group work. If you ask him a question, he usually will not give you a straight answer. Labs usually take 2-2.5 hours. 10 labs, 3 exams, and a final.
Not "that" hard of a class, he was very monotone and there are roughly 2 lectures every class period. He has 8 quizzes, 3 tests, 1 final, and a 10 page research paper with only 3 possible subjects (boring ones). You can get by with ease if you just pay attention to the lectures and use flashcards as a way to study.
Extremely lecture heavy. Take notes of the entire powerpoint, because 1/3 of it will be on the quiz. Also a very information-dense class, which can make studying difficult because you won't sure what to look over. The classroom setting is borderline awful (100+ students in an outdated, cramped lecture hall) but it didn't impact the way I learned.
Dr. Menzies is an amazing professor and his class is simple. There are 4 exams, 8 quizzes, and 1 10 page research paper. He does provide 1 extra credit assignment worth a decent amount of points. His exams are mostly off the lectures, but the book helps a lot. Definitely the hardest class I've taken, and you really have to work hard for the grade
500 points, 3 exams 70 points each, one final worth 70 points, 8 quizzes worth 20 points, one 10pg paper worth 60 points. 15 point extra credit assignment. You don't need the book at all. It might help, but you can definitely get 100% in the class without it. Use Cornell notes, helps a lot with memorization. Lots and lots of studying.
Im actually very surprised reading these reviews. Everyone in my class had the same complaints about him. Very tough grader and did not work well with students. When we would ask for help, he didnt want to elaborate for fear of giving the answer when all we wanted was to know how to set it up. Do not recommend at all
Difficult to approach. Unorganized on Canvas which is important right now. Will have everything under the files tab nothing under assignments or announcements. I usually reccord his explanantions because I know one is all we will get.
This class is very lecture heavy. His system is very simple as far as lectures/ quizzes/ and exams. 90% of anything on a test or quiz is from his lecture- so take notes!Highly recommend getting flash cards- this helped me a lot to study for the quizzes. He is monotone- but he does say jokes here and there. He definitely has a passion for Geogrpahy.
He gives lectures and then gives quizzes. Everything in the lecture is going to be in the quizzes. Quizzes are short, though. He reviews the main lectures a class before the exam. He is tough on grading exams' writing part. There is a 10-page essay required (min. 5 pg) based on one topic you choose. The professor gives you topics to choose from.
He's pretty funny in a nerdy way and easy-going. Lectures are VERY important, most of the test/quiz material is based on them (there's no other homework). He's tough on grades but if you study the lectures and book you'll be fine. This class is definitely hard but imo a great alternative to other sciences if you (like me) are awful at those.
The quizzes are true/false & all based on lecture notes but it's REALLY boring. For the 10paged essay as long as u do the requirements, youll get 100%. In the exams, there are 2 essay quest, write as MUCH as u can & he'll give u credit. it's quantity>quality for him. overall, average professor n grades fast. 15 extra credit points at the end!!
His lab is terrible. Gives you NO feedback and gets frustrated when you ask questions like it's not his job. I got an A but I hated every second of it cuz he's really bad at explaining what to do.
Other than having to write a 10 page paper it is an easy class overall. He goes over exactly everything that will be on quizzes and exams but you do need to attend class in order to get the notes for it.
4shySTDTS:He wont call on you randomly-Imagine Keanu Reeves giving a class on motorcycles except its a dude thats passionate about geography-Timemanaged,grades FAST,excellent lectures, has his system down perfectly-Quizzes are tricky but you have to think critically-DONT BE AFRAID to ask for help with labs-If 1 response doesnt help, ask another Q!
This class isn't really that hard to pass. One thing I will say is there is a 10 page MINIMUM research paper that you have to do on one of the 3 topics he gives you and it's not easy to get to 10, at least for me. The rest of the class is just one quiz a week and an exam here and there, both are tied directly to the lectures. Easy to pass with a B.
He is a great professor, he keeps up to date with grades which is great. Make sure you take good notes. Mostly everything quizzes and exam will be base off of his lectures. Attends do matter if you want to get the information and he explains them, to make it easier to understand. There is a 10 page essay. Other than that the class was amazing.
I believe John Menzies deserves more credit where it's due. He is clear with the grading criteria of the class, especially the research paper at the beginning of the course, and how much time he gives us to complete it. The quizzes and exams were fairly easy due to the structure of them, and the notes we were given by his lectures. A fun professor!
He is very generous and humble!
Very refined lecture course, everything you need is in the lectures and on the slides. Take good notes and you're basically home free; personally I never even opened the textbook. Majority of grade is in multiple-choice quizzes. 10 page paper was the only outlier and has since been reduced to 6, requires independent research.
This class was fun! If you get a great group and overall class this class with be amazing! Have all the required materials before class every week. All about teamwork! Exams can be hard but if you study for them they will be a breeze! He's a funny professor and will always help you when needed! I would recommend taking this with the GEOGB1 class
I loved this class! Online was much easier than in person. Watch the lectures, take notes, take the quiz, and you're done for the week. I would recommend taking this class and lab at the same time. Makes things a lot easier. The lab is one week behind the main. He is also super funny if you have a great class. I would definitely recommend it!
This is my second time doing this class and I recommed you take his online class. In person is not a good choice. His lectures are heavy and quizzes are a 50/50 chance of getting all correct. The exams are a bit better and for the research paper just make sure to follow his grading rubric. Overall the way he teaches this class is not helpful.
The in person class I do not recommend. There is a quiz every week and 3 major exams. He does not let you make up any of the quizzes if you do not attend class. His lectures notes are not helpful for the quizzes. All quizzes are true/false questions. Overall, don't recommend this class.
He's a good teacher and has good lectures, but you really have to keep yourself accountable in the class. He posts everything ahead of time and doesn't remind you about assignments in the online class, but the quizzes are very black and white and aren't trying to trick you, which I appreciated.
Class is challenging if you don't pay attention or skip. He makes it interesting and is funny at times. Take the lab with the lecture and you should pass. I got a C in the lab and B in the lecture.
Amazing professor! Lectures are manageable and interesting. There's few assignments in the class, just weekly quizzes, a few exams, and a research paper. Exams are very straightforward and are based entirely on the lectures. His lessons are extremely clear and well-explained. Highly recommend!
