Avoid! No not pass GO . Rude and insulting to students. Barks out his lectures. It is worth an entire extra semester in school to avoid this instructor. I am a honor student giving this advice.
Overall, he is a decent professor. Anyone who claims his class is not easy is either lazy or bereft of intellect.
Very helpful most of the time. Will accomadate the class. VERY smart professor, you will learn much. Also try Newman and Welch. I took them for macro and micro, respectively. I got A's and thought both were EXCELLENT teachers.
Good Professor! Any student can make an A!
Geat teacher. Very clear; very forgiving. He is a bit fussy, but his lectures and teaching are great. He gives extra credit, also. A+!
Learned more from him than most
Great Professor, hard work but you will learn the material. Willing to work with students to ensure comprehension.
Lecture are different from the book. Hard to follow. I read all the materials, sought help, and was still lost through out the semster. Avoid taking this class. If you do take this class be prepare to work.
This professor is hard, I am an A student and I got a D in this class, my only one. Beleive me, I do NOT reccomend this professor, every one in my class showed up in another, the same one caude we all got F's or D's
Take college algebra first!! Very thorough lectures -will answer any question -has an amazing understanding of economics. The book will be covered on tests even if it isn't covered in class-ask questions over anything you don't know-it'll probably be on the test. LOTS of work, but I got a solid A.
This is not an easy class. Dr Merrifield is good, but moves at a fast pace and while he is fun to listen to, he can leave a-lot of people behind. He gives weekly quizxes, attendance every session is a MUST. I would not take this class unless you have the substantial time to devote to it.
He is so confusing and talks really fast, overall he is a real hard professor, make sure you have enough time because he requires alot of work
I will give him credit...he answers ur questions with clarity, but if you do not know what to ask, or how to ask it, don't bother. He mildly prepares you for the exam. He is a friendly guy, but he is borderline a jerk when it comes to grades and extra opportunities.
THIS is the absolute worst professor I have ever taken!!! I studied my butt off for exams, and they were still extremely difficult. He even lied about the curve, and I believed I was going to get a B in the class, and ended up with a D!! He makes fun of people, yet he collects telephone books!! F-
Urged students to make appointments to see him if you were having trouble in the class. Well i did and he totally ignored me all the time i had the conference with him in his office. Urged me to stay in class and not drop as he would assign extra credit, Well only the favorites got it. u Suck!
Those of you who have given him bad comments are either lazy or have never been intellectually stimulated by any of your past instructors.I have taken him for 3 class and have learned so much. All I can say is that if you made an A in his class you earned if you failed you earned that too.
Mr. Merrifield is a good teacher. He gives his students practice exams before the real test. If you know the practice exams well, you should do good on his exams. Be prepared to study hard! His final is very hard. If you get a chance, get as much help as possible from either him or the SI.
This is the worst class I HAVE EVER TAKEN. He is very arrogant and labels students. He belives that because he has a PHD he knows everthing.. Very difficult to understand him, his Test are designed to make you fail, He is an ****. I encourege you to not take him, if you don't want to ruine your GPA.
Macroeconomics ARROGANT..his personality is like cyanide..HE may say HE is nice and wants his students to learn but his actions are entirely different..if at all possible choose a different instructor...I made a B in his class...and hardly attended, so if you have him it's possible you can survive but...he offends students far more than he helps
It is stupid to think that if you don't like him that you are lazy. This is the second class I'm taking with him. I got an a in the first one. I have never taken a class where taking a test makes me furious. The test's layout induces stress. He is confusing and arrogant. He thinks bad grades are your fault and makes u feel idotic. I hate him.
WOW, this guy is very, very hard!!!! At first I HATED him until i learned a secret. If you take him act exactly like him... He is rude and talks over people... well you must do the same, basicly he is a di** so do the same to him, basicly what i am saying is challenge him just as he challenges you. By the way I am an econ major.
His class is tough, i'm not going to lie! He truly cares about his students, and will be willing to help you!
He believes himself to be GOD. He's the worst teacher EVER! And he is no help. From what I heard you can do better not attending class cause he just coruptes your mind with useless information.DON'T TAKE HIM if you can avoid it.
I don't recommend him. You will be reminded that he has Ph.D everytime you step in the door. His tests will put you in a depressive state of mind. As everybody else has said - he is as arrogant as can be. It seems like he is teaching to brag and lift up his own self-esteem.
I am a PHd. student now but when I took this guy I I was an undergrad which was in 2000. I failed this class twice and he is a total jerk. I went to all the SI's and all the tutoring. I hope that this information helps people out. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!
Very hard class for me. But I found it very enlightening! I am not as hard core of a democrat anymore....
This is the WORST class I have taken at UTSA. The presentation of the course material is disorganized and difficult to follow. The exams are not difficult, but he kills you with an unreasonable number of questions. Frankly Econ Managerial Decisions does a much better job at covering the same material in a much more concise and logical manner.BEWARE
This the most arrogant professor I have ever had. He talks down to the students and makes them feel stupid. Tests are unreasonably long and his interpretation of the material is vague. If you do not have to take him.....DON'T!!
If you're not an economics major then take this class if you want to lower your GPA because thats all its worth
Get ready to be stressed and overworked just to pass.Listen to me, a near 4.0 GPA student. He claims to have done SO much educational research but he doesn't know how to conduct a class. He is disrespectful and condescending to students and his interpretation of material is vague. Exams are VERY long and nearly impossible to complete. Stay FAR away!
This is easily one of the hardest classes Ive been in. "Doc" makes tests that require you to know the material inside and out by creating tests that are Very long and Very wordy. I felt like I studied pretty hard for the last test and still left feeling like a beat dog. Good luck! Of course he is the only option for the class.
This class caused my to lose sleep at night. I got an A in the class but still felt drained and exhausted after the tests. Learn ways to understand the material on your own if you can, as the lectures are very fast and not completely clear. The APLIA helps a lot to learn the basics of the class.
if you wanna lower your GPA take this class. he is horrible.l'm an international student and after two weeks l began to understand what he says.he makes things harder:((
Very intellectually stimulating
This professor is one of the best Economics professor at UTSA. He cares about his student and always provides opportunity for his students to learn the basic Economics theory at a solid fundation. Yes, his test is intesive. However, if you practice enough, the time issue can be neglected.
Very difficult class. He is the only option so make sure to go to all classes and study hard for his tests. Not an easy grade, and takes devotion to understand as you will be teaching yourself most of the material. APLIA homework is a must, it can save you at the end! Typical grade curve is >62%=C
Dr. Merrifield pushes students beyond rote memorization. If you only want to learn formulas but not understand concepts, then don't be an Economics major. If you don't want professors to push and prod and challenge you, then don't go to college. I learned so so much in this class and it's all absolutely foundational for any further Econ study.
He is too smart to teach all that clearly, but he curves well and gives you a lot of chances for extra credit. I learned a lot more than I thought I would from him.
He's smart and wants his students to learn but he doesn't know how to teach. His class is intimidating, if you don't need it don't bother taking him. Bad professor overall, not very helpful.
worst teacher I have ever had in my whole college career
Dr. errifield will challenge you to learn economics so that you can explain what you have learned. It is not just about numbers, equations, or a correct/incorrect answer. It is about understanding economics. Take this class as soon as you can, it will benefit your other classes. Awesome instructor who as a wealth of knowledge to share!
Doc is one of the two economics professors at UTSA that actually pushes his students to learn rather than memorize. Price theory doesn't need to be feared and should be taken early on; it will help with other courses and one's career. Remember: taking the "easy" professors in order to max GPA will only hurt you in the long run.
Hybrid Class - Completely disorganized. Attempts to manage students through discussion threads, b difficult to navigate. Horrible communicator, condescending. PHD? Well good for him. He made a comment "why should I go over power points students can read on their own". Ans: Because we PAY you to. If you're so miserable then step aside.
He does not help students a lot. Sometimes, we may confuse the concept. Students post on discussion board, but actually we still misunderstand. He thinks students should read the powerpoint without his teaching. He is paid, so he should take responsibility for his teaching!?If you want to study without any clarify, you can take this class.
He is not good at clarifying topics at all. If somebody asks a question, he just makes us more confused. Also, he expects you to have read the textbook for each week and his lectures are for "clarification," not learning new material. The lectures are boring and the book was the only thing that helped me.
I was thinking about doing a minor in Economics and he made me hate it so much! Very difficult class, lectures are long and boring. Every time he wants to "clarify" a question, he ends up confusing us even more!!
Doc is an awesome professor, very knowledgeable and passionate about microeconomics. He cares about his students' success and pushes us to learn not just memorize.
Good professor, tough class. If you need help he is quickly available. His lectures are for clarification so you'll need to work it out on your own. Tests are based on homework. Extra credit available.
He wrote his own "book" for the class which had a lot of typos and was hard to understand. I had to find my own explanations for the concepts he was trying to teach because he was not helpful. There were also typos in the homework and the tests. I did not drop the class even though I wanted to because he is the only option.
He was an alright professor for an online course. All his quizzes answer's were most likely online, towards the end they got harder. His tests are f2f & hard if you don't read the book & his clarifiers. He would do weekly quizzes & discussions but then he took out the discussions half the semester. I didn't read much but I managed to barely pass.
I appreciate he actually cares about his students' understanding the material; hes good about posting extra notes and videos & is always quick to respond to questions. The course workload is heavy though, too many readings, you depend on weekly discussion points which are like essays & exams are in person!!
Comprehensive Final Exam. Don't waste your time. Avoid as much as possible, unless you enjoy going bald.
He was not very helpful and his recorded lectures were hard to understand. After every exam, he sent out multiple angry email rants. He once suggested that every one drop the class and take it again in the fall. Extra credit options were given, but they required you to travel to the downtown campus. Would avoid taking his class if possible.
Merrifield isn't a bad proffesor, these ratings are lies. I'm a regular student and I got a B in this class. 3 Tests, a final, and homework makeup the grade. He offers extra credit as well. The tests were very similar to the homework. He gives good resources powerpoints, videos study the homeworks and the powerpoints and you'll be fine.
Dr. Merrifield is not the best Economics professor at UTSA, but he's one of the better options for Intro Micro. I've never witnessed any of these accusations students have made about him. He's the only Economics professor I've had thus far who offered me an opportunity for Independent Study. Just read the book, do your HW, and you'll do fine.
Merrifield, as much as a nice guy he is, he is not a good professor due to his boring lectures. However, he will be there if you need any assistance. He offers a lot of extra credit as well, but the class is very difficult. I never learned anything from his lectures, mostly learned from the book. We used LaunchPad, but he said future classes wont.
Makes you call him "Doc." Goes on and on about irrelevant things. Rambles. Makes bad jokes. Expects the textbook to teach you. Thinks his job is to "reinforce ideas," not teach. Requires attendance so people h a v e to listen to him talk. Reminder emails are like more colloquial trains-of-thought. Tests are ridiculously tough. Avoid if possible.
His class lectures are mainly for clairification. Other than that you MUST read the textbook. Weekly homework. There are three exams and then a final. Though the exams are homework based, they are still very difficult. Not a crazy hard class, it's able to be done. But you really have to work for it.
Terrible. He made this class really hard!
Most disorganized class I have ever come across. Very nice guy, but can't teach in an online setting. You'll have to study on your own w/ the textbook (that he wrote himself). Homework and tests require hours of studying. Only take this class if you have a light course load. Don't take this class if you're taking other hard classes as well.
Although the homework doesn't count for a lot as far as the grades, the tests are based on the homework, and the final is based on the tests. So if you put real effort into the homework each week, you are golden. A lot of the homework answers he literally says in class- so pay attention. Tough class, but you can learn a LOT if you try.
I have no words.
Hardest professor Ive ever had. Is not considerate. Makes you pay $40 on a single website JUST for attendance plus another source. Gets angry if there is no participation. Lots of homework. Hard tests.
Would not recommend taking this class. Find a better professor. This is a 2000 level class which he teaches at a 3000 if not higher level. Not good for a beginning micro eco class. In class tells us how he is thinking about changing around questions to trick us on the tests.
The most tough professor I have taken so far. Theres many chances for extra credit for the reason the class is so hard. He teaches his class as if we are experts already. He definitely assumes everyone knows what his talking about. Dont do it. If you really need this class wait for a bother semester to take it with a different professor
Dr. Merrifield is a good professor, you must put in time outside of class. Study homework and top hat questions and you will do fine on the tests. People who say he is difficult are not applying themselves, or don't show up to class. Show up, read, study, and you will do great.
HIGHLY suggest taking a different prof. He treats his class as more of a Q&A session or a "reinforcement" so pretty much teach yourself. He provides online videos that are basically the same things he says in class and a free textbook to "save you money" but makes you pay around $80 just for attendance and practice quiz apps...
This class can be very hard for a lot of people since his class is for clarification. He wasn't very good explainer but he tried his best to help. Reach out to him during office hours for help. It helped me get A's from a C. Tests are base on the homework, Final based on the old tests.
The most respected professor at UTSA, He is great and caring. The class seems hard because many students are not well prepared at the lower level of intro to micro and macro. If you read well and participate you almost guaranteed to pass the class. He a really renowned economist so he doesn't take any BS when it comes to Economics analysis.
You know what. I was going to be rude at first but hes actually ok. Its a tough class. I would highly suggest you look over the homework for exams or maybe even create a study guide from it, then when taking the exam use it, bc its basically the homework. its online , if youre struggling, do all extra credit , its gonna help you in the end.
You WILL read in this class; lectures are discussions. There is so much extra credit for simply asking/ answering a question People who didnt read or try on the homework will tell you he is a bad professor but even when I failed my first exam, I got an A in the class. Hes a really funny and nice professor, you just MUST read. Micro is just hard.
Fanstasic professor, best I ever had. His lectures do not teach the material, he expects you to go into lectures having read the material. Lectures are meant to clear up questions regarding the readings. That being said stay on task and read the material, and you will excell in the class. He aslo gives extra credit as well and is freindly.
He's a great guy but strays away from the topic every class session, and makes you feel like you're wasting your money on the course. If you took ECO in high school, the first couple chapters are a refresher so pull out those dusty notebooks. Knewton is easy, create a group chat for the course, help your classmates, and they'll help you
Bad Lectures really boring goes off topic a lot try to avoid getting this teacher if you go in with questions he will answer them. Other than that he expects you to know and read the book
This professor barely teaches in class but expects you to do well on the test. He also goes off topic very often while teaching. He says attendance is barely a part of your grade, but it's actually a whole 4%.
DO NOT TAKE HIM if you screw up he tries to say that its not his fault.
Surprisingly belittling prof. considering the amount of errors in his material. Don't point them out though because he will turn the conversation to your supposed poor grasp of the (frequently poor) material. Plenty of vague questions on HW and tests that conceivably have multiple correct answers, but "one is more correct."
It was definitely not useful to go to class. He takes attendance but he didn't count it for a grade. There is alot of quizzes, but those count as homework. His tests are nothing like the homework and quizzes, however if you attend SI sessions and study you can possibly pass.
Very boring but all exams are online. His classes are discussions he doesnt actually teach anything
His lectures aren't very helpful. You spend the majority of the time trying to read the textbook and just teach yourself. Don't take this professor unless you have no choice!!
Lectures are very off topic and you might not learn from them. If you do the knewtons you will definitely learn something and in a better way then trying to listen to the actual points he talks about in class.
Hopefully this professor will be the worst Ill ever have. Micro is a hard class for many people, but If you want a professor to actually teach you and who doesn't expect you to come in to lectures having understood the concepts already, do not take this class. This professor is a very respected economist but a bad professor. I don't recommend.
Don't take this professor at all cost. He does not teach adequately or explain himself when questions are asked. There is no way to study for his test and exams because he makes up his own questions that don't even come from the book. BEWARE to teach yourself!!!! Don't take him!!!!! He doesn't give extra credit so there is absolutely no way to pass
this is by far the worst professor I have had and I am a junior here. Does not know how to teach, talk and talks but never gets to the lesson. By all costs take anyone else but this man.
some stuff are not in the book but are on the exams, he doesn't actually explain anything in lectures
This professor doesn't teach so you have to teach yourself. The exams are worth majority of your grade and are unbelievably hard. During lectures, he goes off into his own thoughts, and doesn't seem to be following the material in the textbook. The Knewtons are easy but don't help with exams an only worth 8%. Avoid this teacher at all costs!
Terrible. Horrible. I cannot describe how bad this "professor" is. Wants you to learn material on your own and claims he's there to teach (his exact words were "I'm not here to teach, I'm here to clarify.") The lectures were useless, all he did was claim the material was easy and we should already know it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
