His class is fun and interesting. There are several papers to write, but the tests and quizzes are not very difficult. As long as you do the work and put some effort into the class you will get a good grade.
He's interested in politics and always tries to provide an unbiased POV. Students are encouraged to speak up re:current events at the beginning of every class period. Material is very well laid out. With some basic analytical skills, you will do well here
Messmer is a really good teacher, i would highly recommend taking his class. Funny and entertaining, he integrated current events and the government-very very good class.
Even though I despise politics, I really enjoyed his class. He's very funny, and for the person who actually IS interested in politics, I'd recommend him!
Dr. Messmer was able to turn me from a politically ignorant person into someone who actually cares about politics. His energy and true love for this subject make the class all the more interesting. Highly recommended, just keep an open mind!
He is an excellent teacher, I took his class two semesters ago and have been trying to get into another one that will count towards my major. He really wants you to learn. I loved his intro to politcal science.
AWESOME!This guy makes learning fun. I enjoyed his class more than any other. If you can, take Dr. Messmer, you will see a MASTER TEACHER at work. Exciting College Professor.
awesome teacher. take the quizzes and watch the news and you'll do fine. make sure to write the papers on issues (like abortion).
He's a great teacher. If you don't like politics, take the class with him because you'll change your mind after his class. He's unbiased and provides both sides of the issues regardless of what he thinks. It's always helpful to read the book for tests and work on the papers early!
He was a great teacher! I really enjoyed his class. He is totally unbiased and just teaches us the facts.
Dr. Messer is one of the best teachers I have had in my two years at Meramec. While politics might not be the first choice of courses for somebody. He makes the class really fun.
He is an awesome teacher and truly remains unbiased. I wasn't very interested in politics before, but I became very interested in the class. He also puts notes on Blackboard to follow along in class. If he assigns a final project on the 21 Debated Issues book, get started on it at the beginning of the semester!
This class was awesome. I never studied and got an A because I was actually interested and listened in class (I think that's a first). He rules, dude!
This guy is one of the best teachers I've experienced at Meramec so far. He has a very fun teaching style and has a innate gift for conveying the ideas in political science. I couldn't be any happier with the two classes of his that I took.
Dr. Messmer is amazing. Not only is he incredibly intellegent he is halarious. He really makes the class interesting. If you email him outside of class he gets back to you almost immediately, same day for sure. He knows so many different things and can adequately answer any question you give him and if he can't he will look up an answer. Not only that he is very nice. If you study and go to class you can pass no problem! Definately recommend him to anyone!!!
I took intro to political science with messmer and then i took constitutional issues the next semester just because he is that good. lectures are never boring. he is always smacking his yardstick on the table. the best teacher at Meramec, no contest. And he looks like a skinny bill gates with a beard.
this is my second class with messmer, and he continues to keep politics as entertaining as my favorite tv show. his tests/quizes can be difficult, you just have to study. and he usually requires a big ol' paper to be written at the end of his classes..but dont let that deter you from a messmer class.
Great teacher. He made Political Science so interesting I can't stop watching the news, reading the Post Dispatch, and looking up Political things on the internet. He taught me how important it is to be involved in our government. He is also a lot of fun in class.
Constitutional Issues was a great class. Messmer is definitely one of the best teachers at Meramec. Class is always interesting. He's never biased, which is hard to come by with college teachers, especially political science teachers. Tests are relatively easy and you'll wish you could take the class over again.
Someone needs to tell this guy to teach more classes. It's incredibly frustrating to get a chance to attend a class taught by someone who cares so much and makes class so interesting only to find out you've already taken all of his available classes. Best college professor I've ever had.
I have taken three of the classes offered in this field that he teaches and have not recieved below a B on anything in his classes. He is always availble and willing to help with papers or study guides. Just stay up on the notes and REVIEW THE NOTES!!!
He's super nice, his lectures are informative and entertaining, notes for lectures are posted online so I just print them off and add little side notes from his lectures, I had him for another Political Science class, he was so cool and made what can be a dry subject really interesting that I took him again for PSC 101
Amazing professor, but very difficult. He really makes you think. Gets off topic easily, but it's always for the better.
Very talkative teacher. You rally need to study and read the book if you want to take A in this class
Great teacher. I would suggest taking his class to anyone.
This dude rocks! Take his class! He makes political science very fun and I really like how he incorporates current events into his class. Very engaging lectures. A+
Dr. Messmer makes political science so interesting. I will take classes with him again and again. Highly recommended.
This guy is rocks my world. I used to be uninterested in politics, but I looked forward to this class every time... I would take it again just for fun. I miss John Messmer!
Professor Messmer was an awesome teacher! I took him for International Relations. The class was so interactive that you NEVER knew exactly what was coming next. His class was a WHOLE lot of fun. :)
One of the best, if not the best professor I have ever had. Very interesting and informative. You can tell he loves the subject and he keeps students engaged. Take his classes!
Great teacher, study the book and you'll do fine.
Whether you are intersted in politics or not, take his classes early and often. Guys like him are rare. Best prof at Meramec, hands down! And even if you walk away with no knowledge of the subject(not likely) you'll walk away with a greater respect for Meramec and college in general.
great teacher made class interesting
I took him back in 02, he was really a great teacher. Before taking this class I had no interest in Pol.Science, but I really learned a lot and it was actually interesting and fun. I would def rec him.
Dr. Messmer is a wonderful teacher. I wish there were more classes I could take from him. If only all teachers were this good
Before taking this class, I HATED anything to do with politics! And after the class, I ended up keeping up with current events and really understanding what was going on in our government. I would defiantly recommend him! Took it 3-week course in the summer and he never made one minute of the class uninteresting!
Prof. Messmer is very passionate about what he teaches and always finds little tidbits to help you remember things. He makes lectures fun and knows what he is talking about. Make sure you study from your book and well in advance of exams. If you do this you should be good, but you still have to work for an A. Recommended.
Messmer was one of my favorite professors at Meramec. Before the class I really disliked politics.. I ended up minoring in it at University. He was passionate, knowlegable, and gets you engaged. You can't coast but it's worth the investment. He is also great about keeping in contact w/ students- especially right before exams.
Great, enthusiastic lectures. I loved going to this class. Tests are multiple choice. Have to write a few 3-4 page papers which turned out to be fun exercises, such as following political money trails- very interesting finds. Definitely learned a lot about how our system works. Highly recommend!
Enthusiastic and gets class interested in topics. Exams are easy if you read over the notes. Gives pop quizzes but even if you do bad on a few you can still easily pass the class with an A.
this is one of my favorite classes I've attended since being in college. i gave it a 3 for easiness. although i have an A- it hasnt come easy. hes very clear about subject matter. his lectures are always high energy and often funny. he's admirably unbiased about politics...fun class i hope i have more professors like Prof Messmer
Dr. Messmer is awesome! If I could take more of his classes I would. Do the assignments, they are easy. Papers are vague but you will get an A because of that. Tests are the hard part! Make sure you study for them. You don't have to read every chapter and don't have to come to class everyday. If you do come, don't be late!
Very structured. Easy IMO. Not too much work. I'd take another one of his classes if I could.
Dr.Messmer was the best teacher I have had at Meramec. I took his Intro to American Politics class and I really enjoyed it, he makes it interesting.
One of the worst professors ever. Teaches this class like it is a law school class. It's not. It's community college and he is not a lawyer. Not helpful at all when asked questions. I attended every class. Made A's and taught myself most of material. Will never take again and would not recommend anyone to take him.
I had him for Constitutional Issues. He is extremely hard. He teaches it like we already know the material. The tests are extremely hard and the class average was always a D on them. He was never clear nor helpful.
I LOVED his class! He's interesting and funny. I needed this class for my Missouri requirement and if you do to he's the teacher to take!
Professor Messmer is an awesome teacher and you can clearly tell that he loves what he teaches! I was dreading taking this class and at the end I loved and was actually interested in politics. Funny guy who is fairly easy if you attend class and pay attention. Highly reccomend his class
I loved the class and him!! I want to take more of his classes. I learned so much for him. He was hands down one of the best teachers I have ever had!! I recommend him to everyone who wants to learn and laugh at the same time.
One of the best teachers that I have had in my life. He is very animated and makes the subject come to life. Don't miss class because he teaches beyond the book and class is fun anyway.
Messmer is an awesome teacher he is truly passionate about what he teaches and is extremely helpful with anything you need I would definitely take his class again.
Mr. Messmer kept it interesting. He joked and told it like it is on the subject of politics. I would definitely take his class again. Awesome teacher!!! Your have to study for the tests if you want to pass they take up most of your grade! You need the text book for your open book quizzes.
I took his International Relations class & absolutely loved it. He was obviously passionate about his work, and this came across in the level of energy that he brought to the classroom. Midterms & Finals make up 50% of your grade, so if tests aren't your thing maybe you shouldn't take the class. Otherwise I considered the class to be an easy "A."
There is only three test in the entire semester. The tests aren't too difficult, but you need to study for them. The quizzes are super easy. The class itself was pretty fun. I highly recommend taking his class. This is coming from someone that was never into politics before this class. After I have a better appreciation for politics.
He is quite animated and obviously loves politics. He knows most students are there because they have to be and I think he wants to change that. He truly wants you to be involved in politics. Discussion boards are not required, but they do count towards participation.
John Messmer is the Mother Theresa of St. Louis Community College. He taught me to read and inspired my newfound love of politics. Kept class interesting and always knew how to spice things up. He has a twinkle in his eye and a song in his heart. I wish he taught every class at this school. Not only an amazing professor, an amazing human being.
He is an amazing teacher that makes the lecture worth listening to! He is full of energy and you leave the class everyday learning something! DO NOT BE ON YOUR PHONE! And he hates people who are late so get there on time. 3 papers and a few quiz's that are easy. Tests are easy . STUDY!
Took 8 week online course. Really rude guy. Said he would post grades every 2 weeks, ended up taking a month. 2 discussion posts that require some actual thought & effort were due in about 2 days of being given notice, most people didn't notice this & posted on the weekend. Testsessays were ok, must read material! Just unhelpful and a bad attitude
Great class, honestly. He is fair although he doesn't always make things as clear as they should be especially related to the discussion boards. Weekly quizzes are straightforward if you read. Papers aren't too bad if you prepare and know what the subject is. I would suggest reading weekly, as the quizzes and discussions can get kinda sticky.
He makes me like politics!
If you study his study guide you'll pass the tests with ease. He is VERY animated and he loves political science (it shows in his lectures)! If you need a good, interesting, easy class for your MO requirement that Messmer Intro to American Politics!
Awesome teacher! He keeps the lectures short and exciting. Class is easy if you simply pay attention. I highly recommend him for Political Science.
Easy to get an A if you simply follow directions and participate. I did feel like the book was a little one-sided as well as some of the other reading assignments but overall I learned alot and did not feel I had to work very hard for it. Would prefer a more unbiased textbook.
Online class so there was very little participation in the discussion boards from the professor. We (students) were blindly discussing topics without any input from the professor and with only our book or the assigned articles to refer to. Would have liked more perspective from the professor. Otherwise, easy A.
Professor Messmer is my favorite teacher at Meremac. You can tell that he cares about his job. I came into this class not caring about politics, but he made me love it. I would highly recommend you take his class.
Messmer is a great professer and one of my favorites here at Meremac. He is funny and lectures are great and very important. I got a B in the class but it is still one of my favorites I have taken
Messmer was a fantastic professor! We had two tests, three papers, and several blackboard discussions. The latter was a participation grade. Attendence is also graded. The way Messmer presents his lectures is quirky, to say the least. Be prepared for infrequent cursing, routine desk slamming, and a variety of odd mannerisms ("OOOooooo-Weeeeee!").
This class was my first class back to school after a 15 year hiatus, and it was amazing! The professor obviously loves his topic, and he draws you in so that you love the topic too! Constitutional Issues was one of my top favorite classes in the past two years, and I would love to have other classes with this professor!
Always loved american government in high school, so decided to take his class. I found myself hating to write his papers but would laugh doing so because I never sat down and thought about the issues before taking his class. I loved this class and would take it again.
One of the best professors ever. He is super passionate about politics and it shows and he made me take an interest in it as well. (Thank you!) Also funny and tells it like it is. Study for the tests and you'll be fine. He assigns a few papers but I found them all interesting to write. I would recommend him a thousand times!!
Messmer is my favorite teacher that I have had in my entire academic career. I never looked foward to going to school, but he makes me actually look forward to class. I have learned a lot, and everyone in the class really enjoys his lectures and the take he has on it. Very good professor!
I have taken two of Johns classes International Relations and Constitutional Issues. Both classes had extremely fun lectures that made look forward to everyday. That being said if you are not interested in the material you will struggle in these two class. You cannot guess your way through his tests. You either study or do bad on exams. 10/10
Good class. He makes Political Science as interesting as possible. 4 MC tests, 3 opinion essays (no research, 3 pgs ea), 10 on-line quizzes. Gives a week to do assignments. Take good class notes and study them. Participate in class discussions. You will get an A. He hates class interruptions like phones ringing, talking, or texting.
He's an excellent instructor. I initially DREADED having to take a political science class (thought it would be incredibly boring and simply something I had to do to satisfy transfer requirements), however I am so happy I took his class. He is a very animated and expressive instructor and teaches in a way that leaves students engaged/curious.
I thoroughly enjoyed Messmer as a professor. He was very easy to work with, passionate about the class, and extremely unbiased which is hard to find. High recommendation!!
I wouldn't recommend this for people who wish to get to class & immediately start. About 25 minutes are spent on random conversation. This isn't a politics club. Go join one & discuss it there. I'm paying to learn material I'll be tested on. Not to listen to the same three annoying people be redundant. Also, John rolls his sleeves oddly.
What a fantastic teacher! I took him a couple semesters ago, so I might not be as specific as I'd like to, but I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He is extremely passionate about the covered material and will bring the text to life. He will use current issues to thoroughly illustrate the concepts and truly cares about your success as a student.
Take this class if you want to understand politics (afraid of politics). Prof. Messmer has GREAT lectures which make this difficult subject easy to understand and absorb the information. He has the knowledge, but more important knows how to impart that knowledge to his students with his clever, smart and funny lectures! He's amazing, take this!
Messmer was a fantastic professor in my opinion. You can tell he really cares about politics, but loves to joke around too. Sometimes he will get off topic, but everyone in the class seemed to enjoy his discussions. The class wasn't easy and I worked pretty hard for my B. If you like or want to be interested in politics then I recommend his class.
Make sure you post your discussion on time.
Couldn't recommend this guy enough, he gives hilarious and engaging lectures. He's also a fair grader and very approachable outside of class. Tests weren't easy but they were fairly straightforward, as long you take good notes and study a little you should be fine. Seriously, this guy really helped reignite my interest in PLS, A++
If you're looking for a way to make Politics more interesting, THIS IS YOUR GUY. I thought i was going to be bored to death, but his lectures are beyond entertaining. He's funny, passionate, and charismatic. He also gives you many EASY opportunities to gain points other than tests.
Dr. Messmer brings a lot of energy to the class. His lectures are very fun, and he manages to "jazz up" some commonly overlooked topics (such as the federal bureaucracy). The online discussion board is a great tool to debate issues, and he brings up a lot of great discussions in class. Make sure to use the study guides! This is a difficult class.
All true. Messmer brings the energy, he spends lots of class time on relevant topics that you AREN'T being tested on, test are straightforward if you pay attention to power points, essays are simple. Clear grading, test matter. Our world seems to prioritize memorization over critical thinking. We also gauge validity with a like button so... cool.
This is an amazing class. Dr. Messmer's study guides are fantastic. The questions will guide you through the reading and lectures, challenging you to think through the material. The essay topics are enjoyable and require a lot of research and thinking. He is always there to help you, but he won't just give away answers.
Very interesting class. Group discussions very important. Three papers that must be done well.
Messmer is overall a great professor! He clearly knows the material and explained it in an interesting way. He puts slides up on the board, but showing up to class and paying attention are keys to succeeding (along with reading what he assigns). There were online take-home quizzes worth homework points, a few tests, and a few easy papers. Not bad!
Pretty interesting lectures and upbeat guy. He really overexplains simple things and does so repeatedly, but he prepares you for the tests well. He also tends to interrupt students which grew rather annoying but the course is fun.
Funny, makes learning about politics amazing.
This dude is a joke. I will give it to him that he is passionate about the course, but he is extremely rude and will give you major attitude if he decides he doesn't like you. He will also tell you that attendance and participation are a "small portion" of your grade, but if you are not in class every day it will drop you down significantly.
Professor is extremely rude and unclear on what he expects out of his students but has no problem giving them a bad grade for not meeting his expectations. He snapped on our class and said hes disappointed in us for not posting enough in the discussion board. Would not recommend
Took his online American politics class. Its an easy A if you do the work assigned, if you try to skate by and turn in things late you wont pass. There was homework every week, but it took at very most 45 minutes a week. Great professor and class, responds (almost immediately) to e-mails and questions. Good professor!
Messmer is a great professor. I have taken all three of the classes he teaches and I am not even going into politics. He has a way of teaching that just makes everything interesting because he is passionate about what he teaches. Now hes not gonna give you an easy A, he's gonna make you work for it. Ask him about the leaf blower guy for a goodlaugh
I love Messmer, I'm in two of his classes this semester and he is really passionate about the material and cares about his students. He also tells really good jokes and wears a lovely cardigan in the winter. He's a wholesome man and he knows his stuff... 10/10
Dr. Messmer is down to earth guy and jazz up any "boring" topics. He is very passionate and intelligent in this subject. He doesn't post the power point on the website that he makes you pay attention especially in class, which it helped me to be successful in his class. Oh yeah, make sure to answer fully on the study guide, it will be on the test.
Messmer is a wonderful & hilarious professor, he also wears a wonderful cardigan. We wrote 3 3-page papers, had 11 online quizes, & 3 easy tests. You won't pass if you don't show up, participate, or use the study guide, but it doesn't take a ton of work to pass. Do not be late to class though, he won't let you sign in but will let you attend.
He was so passionate about what he was teaching it was great. He was really educated, funny, and nice. There was a quiz almost every Friday so it was important you attended the lecture. They were pretty easy. He made the class so interesting and I had no interest in this subject before hand and this ended up being my favorite class.
He is a good, solid prof. Very passionate about politics/gov. His class made me love politics. I appreciate his low tolerance for nonsense & asking silly questions that were just covered. Be present (mentally & physically), be respectful of his expectations & pay attention- if you do any of these things in his class you'll have an A.
He is an amazing professor! He makes politics so fun and interesting I attended every lecture and was never bored. His tests are pretty straightforward and as long as you take good notes and follow the study guide easy A. I highly recommend taking his class!!
The good reviews are just from lecture. He's a cool guy if you never talk to him outside of class, but if you do, he does a complete 180 with how friendly he seems during lecture. I questioned him about giving me a 9/12 on an exam essay answer I wrote straight from the book and he said "I'll give you the points back-I must've been in a bad mood."
Hes a very tough grader. We had a quiz every friday for constitutional issues and I had probably 4 perfect scores. You have to know exactly what he is expecting but the midterm and final are good to study for a lot of points. Great teacher overall, just tough.
He gives out homework to do online discussion but make sure to read over other postings and leave comments to get full points. The class has two big exams with short-answers and multiple-choice. He kind of rushes through the powerpoint so take good notes in class and use the study guide to ace the tests. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic
Dr. Messmer knows content, however, he is the most rude a pretentious person if you try to address him one-on-one. He has a short attitude and difficult time admitting his faults. Knowing content is one thing and being able to a decent human being is another. Don't expect him to empathize or actually care about you.
by far the best professor i had at meramec. downright hilarious and his lectures were always so engaging. there are so many things i will always remember from intro to american politics as they're all things i SHOULD know as a citizen. he did an amazing job teaching and explaining each topic. highly recommend, wish i could take him again!!
Participating regularly and frequently in the discussion boards are a must and worth a lot of your grade but I think he mostly just wants the effort. Quizzes are super easy but worth a lot, so make sure you take those on time. 3, 3-page papers which he seems to be a generous grader on so far. An A is 93-100%, though, but he's pretty cool.
There are weekly discussions that are graded every 3 weeks and if you don't participate it can really affect your grade. The papers were extremely easy and he isn't a though grader when it comes to that. Its pretty decent amount of work and if you do it then you shouldn't have a problem getting a good grade.
Read the assignment- Don't assume you know what to do because of its title. This class should be mandatory. If you understand the history of the American ideology, its system, you can succeed in it. His lectures are noteworthy, so take notes.
Great lectures, provides notes as well as PowerPoints. he updates grades immediately Easy and informing class, gained a lot of knowledge from this class. must put in the effort to study and do the work.
He was okay. Don't talk in his class though, there was a kid who was probably on the spectrum and he would cuss him out daily because he talked a lot. Very Anti- Trump which I actually enjoyed. He is passionate about politics. His test were really hard. He is kind of tough on grading papers too. If you want an easy A don't expect it from his class.
Very passionate about the subject. Print outlines to take notes on if you want to succeed.
Professor Messmer is such a gem. He is passionate and caring for all of his students. He always replied to my emails within a few hours and was very understanding. His lectures are content heavy and I recommend taking organized notes. Everything on the tests is covered in the lectures clearly. Make sure you go above and beyond on the HW for credit.
I think he's funny but like most Political teachers he's not that understanding. He replies pretty fast to emails and he grades papers fairly easily. His tests aren't hard if you use the study guide he provides (they're long).
Since this was an online course, Professor Messmer did not give much feedback and came off very short in every email and announcements. He gave very short time periods for students to complete the midterm and final (you have twelve hours from when he posts it to get it done.) The weekly tests were easy.
There are weekly quizzes (which are very easy), 3 papers, weekly discussion board questions, midterm, and final (not comprehensive). Do well on midterm and final- each one is 25% of your grade. Focus on the videos and supplemental notes and you will do good on the tests. Book is NOT needed. If you put in the effort, this class is an easy A.
I am personally not a fan of political science but I was pretty satisfied with this class. It is a lot of work. Do not take this class if you want an easy class. I wish this professor would give more information on what he expects from your papers. I am sure that this teacher is one of the best political science teachers at STLCC.
Great professor overall. Funny, relatable, passionate about the subject and teaching. Really tough, borderline arbitrary grader. Exams are purposely written to confuse you/trip you up which I find ableist as someone with a learning disability. Easy homework and papers though! Honestly light workload for an 8 week.
Do not take this class. Mr. Messmer doesn't care about you. He is not clear on his grading criteria and will not respond to you if you have questions. He will give a 60 on an assignment you went above and beyond on. Do not take this class. One of the worst teachers I've had
I took one of his online courses (Intro to Political Science). His lectures were interesting and could keep his audience's attention. His grading and assignments were clear and well explained. He also responds very quickly via email if questions arise.
Genuinely nice person, cares for students, excited about material, and easy to talk to. Very easy to get him sidetracked so toward the end of the semester it gets a bit more difficult. Answers questions to the fullest and always willing to chat after class if more help is needed. Lots of mannerisms I catch myself using outside of class now XD
I highly recommend taking any of his courses he definitely is inspirational and helpful.
Prof. Messmer was hilarious and always knew how to keep the class' interest. He created inside jokes with his classes which creates more engagement. The only negative is that he is not easily accessible. I received no response to multiple emails. If you show up to class and do the work, he is great.
Professor Messmer is by far one of the greatest instructors ever. He has so much energy and love for his specialty that will make you fall in love with politics. Print the study guide that he provides, and go over it because this is the way to do great in tests. If you have zero knowledge of politics, go with Professor Messmer
Dr. Messmer is honestly the best prof I have ever had. He keeps everyone engaged, and his class is just fun in general. Do not be afraid to voice your opinion in his class; even if he disagrees with you, he won't take points off of assignments. Very fair grader. Don't buy the textbook you don't need it. Ask him questions after class he will love it
Totally amazing prof. If you like political science at all, you will love this class. There is a quiz every week, but as long as you study and realize he asks the same basic things about each country covered, you will do fine. The midterm and final and amazing because they are not exams. Take his class you wont regret it.
I honestly came into this class knowing very little about American politics, I wanted to learn more and really gain some knowledge on this topic. That did not happen I took the class once and did not pass and the second time I received a C. I am still in disbelief on how hard this class actually is unless you are a pro it is not easy!
Loved this class and Messmer! Weekly quizzes that were easy if you paid attention/studied. Had him for 101 and loved that class too. Kind of picky with his grading but he is always very fair. Weekly discussion boards that you are encouraged to participate in (counts for a small % of your grade.) Fun midterm and final as well. Highly recommend him!
Very engaging lectures, often fun to listen to. Overall nice guy but will walk out of room if you don't hand in your test by the end of the meeting period. This will result in a zero on the test but if you go into his office right after he will have a screaming fit and yell how nice he is for still accepting the test. Mostly nice would take again
Professor Messmer keeps his lectures interesting with small stories, lots of humor, and occasionally shouting. He loves it when people ask questions, and there are no bad questions to him -- he'll elaborate on whatever you say. There are pop quizzes, and sometimes he can be a tough grader. You don't have to get the textbook.
An amazing professor with a lot of experience under his belt. His volume is perfect and he goes into great depth in his lectures.
Best professor I've had so far, he's passionate and great at teaching.
I really enjoyed this class. Lots of discussions but they helped boost my grade. Midterm and final are timed and have a lot of content so be sure to study. I would definitely take another class with him!
Messmer is the best teacher I have had at Meramec. He is so kind and hilarious during lecture. Pop quizzes are annoying but honestly just listen to the big points in lecture and you will be fine. He has made me more interested in political science. Lectures are long but he keeps you engaged!
Do not buy textbook, he provides it online. Print out powerpoints beforehand to take notes on and READ YOUR NOTES BEFORE CLASS. He does popquizzes a lot and grades on attendance/participation in class. He said we were lucky if we got a B in his class. Funny guy otherwise but this class was difficult for me. He's very passionate about politics.
He's not a strict grader, and the material isn't hard. He gives you extra material. The work is textbook reading 2/3 chapters per week, it's easy text, but it can get boring quickly. There's one discussion/quiz per week, both are easy. There's 3/4 papers in the entire class, all shorter than 3 pages. He's pretty responsive to emails during the week
There was a free textbook and often pop quizzes on information during past lectures. The textbook often went into more detail than the lecture and some of the info is included in tests (Mostly the open-ended section). There are a few papers mixed into the semester along with tests. Fun professor and his lectures were never boring.
He has no sympathy for you and does not care a lot about his students. He won't let you make up anything! If an essay is one minute late you will get an automatic 0! Don't recommend this class unless you want to hear him talk about how disappointing quiz scores were and that we should know better.
He's a solid professor, but he can be picky with his quizzes. No tests, just quizzes and discussion boards. Always participate in class and on online discussion. The quizzes are styled like FRQs, but not exceptionally difficult, though he's a bit of a stringent grader. No extra credit. Attend class, because he grades attendance
Enjoyed every second of this class, even the pop quizzes. Prof Messmer is consistently charismatic and engaging. He also provides you with everything you need to succeed, such as study guides, and an optional, FREE textbook if you want to further understand the material outside of lectures. I've signed up for another class of his next semester.
I love Prof Messmer, he's very passionate about political science which makes his lectures all the more interesting. Pop quizzes are prominent but as long as you know the material you will succeed in his class. Attendance is important, in case there is a pop quiz. He's great and I plan on taking another one of his classes next semester!
I understand the criticism he receives but I think it's important to remember this is not highschool. Messmer expects you to advocate for yourself and study outside of class. He is not going to drag you to an A for minimal effort. Sure, pop quizzes are not fun but it prepares you for future higher level classes.
He's very enthusiastic about politics, which made his class a lot easier to enjoy. He's not an easy grader, especially with pop quizzes, but he's very fair and he does his best to help us. His study guides are great!
This is a great class if you put in the effort. You HAVE to listen to his lecture videos and take notes. You will be asked essay questions on the test that come from his videos only. It's mandatory to get a good grade. Good teacher and explains everything and you know what is expected. Your grade is on you.
A great prof who understands what a community college curriculum should entail. Very clear grader and good outlined canvas. His work is very doable and he gives a textbook online for FREE. Never had to email him for anything but he is pretty understanding of late work. Do the assignments, you will pass.
Solid professor, he gives notes, study guides, and textbook for FREE. No homework other than papers and keeping up with notes. Loved the class. However, he has embarrassed multiple people in class who have special needs. He will pause his lecture and watch certain students leave the room, doesn't answer questions if he finds the person obnoxious.
I don't want to write 👍
Very nice guy, but he has a really bad case of Trump Derangement Syndrome which made it difficult to share my views in class
His online class is pretty easygoing, simple, not too heavy work. But he is rude. Sent him an email discussing my concern for getting a 20 point deduction on my paper over a little citation mistake, and he was extremely unprofessional in his response. He accused me of shifting blame on him (which I didn't) and told me to grow up. So unprofessional
What a time to take International Relations! Professor Messmer was the best at explaining global politics and the impact it'll have on the rest of the world. There's a couple quizzes throughout the semester and he's a tough grader so definitely study and be thorough in your answers. Other than that I enjoyed my time in his class!
I made a single mistake on a paper and instead of taking off points, he failed me for the entire paper. When asked about it, he showed no regard for my concerns and went as far as yelling at me because I wouldn't let it go. I was informed not to drop because I was certain to win the appeal but after the yelling, I feared retaliation.
Professor Messmer is very smart and entertaining, and I loved the class (though I was very interested in political science already). Grades came from periodic discussion boards, which were mostly pretty short assignments, and from small quizzes. No large tests. There was a final project which I enjoyed.
This teacher was incredibly unhelpful and borderline defensive. He accused me of AI and wouldn't let me make up any of my work. He did this to my friends too. I had to drop his online class last semester because he didn't help us at all.
bad professor
He was so rude to me in class all the time and graded everyone's stuff including mine so harshly
He's very passionate when it comes to the topic at hand, and the workload was manageable with basic effort(textbook is also free!). However, he is not very responsive outside of class, and seems to generally dislike doing anything to help the students outside of lectures and posting study material. He's not very forgiving, so don't fall behind!
Very funny prof but I dont like politics so it was much harder and not very interesting to me. If your into politics then you will probably enjoy his lectures a lot though. Also he grades papers thoroughly and doesnt seem to like helping students outside of class too much
Professor Messmer is a great when it comes to lecturing but is not always the best when it comes to clarity on confusing processes such as the ways to amend the constitution. . Messmer is extremely particular when it comes to short answer responses on his tests. He expects perfection yet gives terrible feedback, examples: "No", "What", and "?."
Professor Messmer provides a helpful learning environment, and was always very attentive to student needs, and ready to help students outside of class. The class is very simple, 3 papers, 3 exams including the final
His lecture is amazing. No homework except one discussion board that comes with every module. Just spend some time on the study guide and you should be fine. He did not specify how detailed he wants the written answers to be, but make sure you answer in detailed because he does want it detailed
