One of the best math teachers I've ever had. Rarely ever needed help or clarification and when I did I left with total understanding of what I came for. All you have to do is make a genuine effort to understand and you should have no trouble.
He is the best teacher at SJRCC!!! I could understand everything he taught the first time and if I didn't all I had to do was ask him and he wouldn't quit till I understood! Plus he's really funny...only problem is you can get kinda distracted cuz he has got to be the hottest teacher at SJRCC!!!
Metcalf is by far the best math teacher I have ever had, if you have a question he makes sure that he answers it and you understand things, he explains math to where any one could understand, and he actually cares about his students, he is an awesome teacher
Metcalf has been the best math teacher thus far in my entire academic career. He definately made math more enjoyable, and he's soooo dreamy *sigh*
He's a good teacher. Understanding of life's situations and is fair. Works out problems to make sure you understand the concept not just the method. He even explains the algebra portion. Doesn't assume you know everything you're supposed to and helps you get beyond. I highly recommend him. Tests are on par with material covered, no surprises.
He is an awesome tecaher if you have a chance to take his clas then take it. He really understands that you have other responsibilities outside of school ex.work, kids, ect. He is always in his office and willing to help you
Great teacher who is clearly out to help you, not hold you back! Very clear on what you need to know. Not a freebie grade by any means, but if you put in the effort, it is extremely realistic to get an A or B even if you aren't a math wiz.. Just show up, stay on top of the lessons. No comprehensive final. Lets you use "formula sheet" on tests.
If you are taking any Math class I highly recommend Prof. Metcalf. His classes are easy, no assignments, and likely to let you out early most of the time!!
Best math teacher ever. Period.
The class itself is as easy as you make it, Metcalf lays out exactly what you need to know and if you got questions he'll work with you until you know it... Highly recommend any mathematics classes with him
Metcalf is awesome. He makes sure every student knows what is going on and he'll answer any question. He made me enjoy math a lot. Also, the fact that he's pretty sexy is okay by me! =)
His tests are very easy and multiple choice. As long as you pay attention and do your homework, you'll get a good grade.
Good class. I faired well and I am not naturally inclined to mathematics. He does seem quite frazzled or stressed at times. I imagine in his younger years, he was quite a fun teacher. Class is short and sweet. Only what you need to know. Got out early when we covered what we needed to, which was most days.
He is a very good teacher, he is understanding.Take him for any math class,I want to take him for Calc 2 in fall 2010
He is sooooo Great!!!! He will help you in a heartbeat! Easy to understand the materials.
Great teacher, very helpful. I would take him for any math class if you could
Don't take during Summer or shortened terms! He teaches from the book and gives homework but that is for your learning. Only grades are 4 tests and they are VERY hard as compared to the book and worksheets. If you like learning several different ways to do a math problem, this guy is for you. If you just want one way, he will confuse you.
Very good teacher, makes everything clear for everyone in the class. Went out of his way to help with whatever I brought him, even when it was from a higher or lower level of content. Also recommended a professor to continue on into Calculus with and went out of his way to get me into the upcoming class.
At first I thought he was a bit of a jerk, but I kinda think he's nice now. His class was pretty easy, even in a summer class, as long as you're paying attention. I wouldn't take him for math higher than Algebra though, he would confuse you.
He is such a nice teacher,i had dropped last term becaus i had to many classes. However i retook him. I dont understand math at all, he was very helpful! I really enjoyed taking him! He is a pretty cool guy that is down to earth!
Best math teacher I have ever had! He was always willing to help any one of his students! There are 4 or 5 tests in his class and homework only for study purposes..if you don't keep up on the homework..you will fall behind!
Have taken several of Metcalf's classes. He usually cuts class time by 15 minutes or so. He works problems on board and will do so in many different ways to make sure you understand. Is willing to help, but can be impatient if he is running late because of personal reasons. Great teacher if you're not going to be math major. No extra credit.
Great teacher, very helpful made math exciting. Always let students know he was available to help if you needed him. never minded repeating a problem till you understood how to work it step by step. very sexy easy on the eyes
He got me over my fear of math, helped me understand like no teacher ever has, and he is HOT, which made paying attention very easy :) Excellent teacher!!!
Wonderful professor! He has a true passion for math, you can tell by the way he teaches. Very clear explanations, lots of examples, and he introduces more than one way to go about solving a problem. Helpful, friendly and approachable. Best math teacher I've ever had...by far!
awesome guys!! He will help you if you need it but all you really have to do is show up for test review then the day of the test and its an easy A!
Mr. Metcalf is an excellent teacher! I had him for intermediate and college algebra. He explains himself very well and uses great examples. He helps you out whenever you need questions answered. Just always attend class, pay attention and do the math XL hw and it will be a cakewalk!
Very good professor. Very helpful and goes over the material several times and several ways if necessary. Always willing to answer questions. Plenty of available office hours if you need help. Tests are okay if you study and understand the material but study guides and homework are certainly helpful. If you have any concept of math you'll get it.
He is really clear when teaching and your assignments are all on Math XL and you get a new homework assignment every week and they aren't due until the last day of class. You have about 4 tests, very easy as long as you pay attention and go to most of the classes.
Great Math teacher. He almost expects you to know all the material before the class. He always says "You guys know this already right? This is just review right?" but he completely explains everything (very well) when the class says "uhh no?"
Amazing math professor. His love for the subject is very evident. Very clear and very very easy to follow along with because he teaches lessons as if it is everyone's first time learning it (even if it may be a review for some). Tests are usually all MC. Unless you're extremely terrible with math, you'll have no problems in Mr. Metcalf's class.
Explains the material clearly
I have been out of school for quite some time and math was not my strongest subject. He was an AWESOME professor!! At first, it seemed as though he was going super fast, but that was only bc I had been out of the "test taking game" for a little while. In the end, I came out of his class with a B. If he sees you trying, he will help you when needed
great teacher!
Mr. Metcalf was AWESOME! Super chill dude and very personable, not too much work but at the same time not a breeze through kind of class. He goes off on other subjects a lot, but what he says is always interesting. I found myself learning a lot more in the short 6 weeks I had him than just Algebra. Take him you won't regret it!
Best math teacher I have ever taken. He is good at explaining the material and gives reasonable tests. He does math xl in the classroom which I love because it helps and we do get a lot of online homework but he gives you more than a few attempts if you get some questions wrong. Very smart, nice guy and super cool personality. Awesome at teaching!
Metcalf was a great teacher, clear and easy to follow. Highly recommend.
Enjoyed Professor Metcalf. Always knew what was on the homework and tests. Weekly homework and quiz is from My Math Lab. Makes class time enjoyable and as painless as possible. :) He is always there to help, don't hesitate to ask! I will be taking him again in the future.
I've taken more than one math professor at this college and this professor isn't the best one. He's not bad, but he's very fast paced and teaches as if everyone knows it the first time. He wasn't bad, but not my preferred math professor at the college. I wouldn't recommend him for someone who is terrible in the math subject.
Best math teacher I have ever had! I always have had a hard time understanding math, but he has changed that for me. Only a few tests, most of the work is on Math XL. I definitely recommend taking him !
As long as you do great in all the homework & quizzes (super easy cuz it's online & you have 3 tries), you'll pass since he gives more weight on those than tests. Clear instructions & goes through problems step-by-step. He also shows multiple ways on how to solve problems. Very lenient & understanding. Skip class, would miss loads of needed info
Loved Metcalf. Super nice guy and great at explaining content. Easy on the eyes too ;)
Explains everything really well. He does move kind of fast some days but if you stop him for a question, he won't hesitate to make sure you understand before moving on. He brings pretty good energy to the class. He really knows what he's doing.
Professor Metcalf really loves math and it shows. He explains the subject well but is happy to explain it again and again as needed. Weekly quizzes and homework are due on Math Xl, but he is really fair and reminds you to get your stuff done. Awesome teacher, sweet guy.
He's a hilarious professor who is always available to students who need extra help. His lectures are not boring at all and he gives good feedback on all the test and quizzes + teaches the material in an understandable way.
I don't recommend taking his class if you prefer to learn everything step-by-step. Personally, I felt that he went through the material really fast. I couldn't keep up.
Amazing, understanding and cooperate professor. He's definitely a favorite for someone who really wants or needs to understand the critical elements of math.
At first his class might seem to be overwhelming and I debated on dropping his class, so I decided to talk to him during his office hours and ask him about certain math problems. He wasn't rude or unhelpful. He was patient and helped me work out the problem. Great teacher, I had him for summer session and would have taken another class with him.
He is the most chill professor! He knows that not everybody will be pursuing math or science so assignments are as easy as possibleHe is far better at explaining concepts than any high school teacher I've had. He is thorough and uses visuals for students to learn. He's wonderful and down-to-earth. He made my first college class passable!
Professor Metcalf moves super fast through the subjects and expects you to understand it immediately. His tests are also much more complicated than the homework and lecture material- and they're hard to read. Really nice guy, but if you're like me and need to know step by step/don't learn quickly, it's not the class for you.
Professor Metcalf will work with you to make sure you pass. As far as teaching goes, I suck at math and didn't learn anything. I'm not saying it is his fault, but... I passed his class anyways.
Prof. Metcalf is an awesome prof. He is always available outside of the classroom. His homework load is perfect considering college algebra is one of those subjects you HAVE to review outside of the classroom. I did access the college's FREE tutoring center for excess help and I do give them a lot of credit for my success, however Metcalf is great.
This man is the GOAT. Enough said.
Great professor !If you take professor metcalf be prepared to work. Many say his class is impossible but if you put in the time you will pass without issue, a lot of homework and heavy weighted quizzes but the homework and study guides is the key to getting a high grade. Repetition will be your best friend in this class.
he's awesome
John Metcalf is the professor one hopes for. He is a very enthusiastic mathematics professor and his love of the material makes his lectures engaging and understandable. Its not an easy class. If you attend class and study the material you should do fine on the tests. He is always accommodating of a students need for more explanation. #awesome
10/10 would take a class with this professor again. He made things very easy to understand and his teaching style was easy to follow. Lots of homework, a quiz every week, and four test.
best math teacher I ever had!! Very understanding when things came up and was flexible with me. 10/10 would take a class with Metcalf again!!
Kinda fast when it comes to going teaching but if you didn't get it, he will go back over it again. Adds interesting real life math problems in class so that you see where college algebra is used. (If you're like me, you may be wondering if you will ever use it again!)
Best math teacher ever! Super cool, if you have questions hes very helpful. Im terrible at math he I understand his lectures very well with asking questions!
I'm so glad I took Intermediate Algebra with Metcalf! I used to suck at math and I kind of hated it, but after having taken this class, I can't wait for college Algebra next semester! He showed us so many different tricks and gave us different ways to remember formulas. The only downside, My Math Lab, everyone (including Metcalf) hates it.
Professor Metcalf was a lot fun this semester. He does move fast, but he is accessible after class if you need help. His test study guides are easier than the tests, so prepare for that. Just do the work, take the class seriously, and you will do fine.
Great teacher ! for the first time I wasn't afraid to do math .
I really enjoyed Mr. Metcalf as a teacher, he went into great depth on subjects and made sure the class was ready for all tests. As long as you keep up with class and the MML assignments you'll be fine. I got a 100 in the class (not sure about final), even missing a test and making it up with no penalty. The reviews are very helpful too.
I both like and don't like Professor Metcalf. Prepare to show up to a sign on the door saying no class. Though, he is great at teaching math. After COVID, he compiled everyone a list of videos for the topics and then made his own video for the final. If you have trouble with math and don't mind randomly having the day off, this class is for you
John Metcalf is a great professor if you like your comedy and dedication to a subject to be intertwined. He's a great professor, but his jokes make you lose focus fast. If you can overcome that obstacle, he single-handedly is one of the best Profs. at SJR. If you can't and need someone extremely studious, take Mark Wilson; for better or for worse.
If you learn well on your own, this is your dream class. If you need more guidance from a teacher, metcalf is accessible through Zoom and hes super. Lots of great videos linked each week to make sure you had the knowledge needed. Everything is layed out from day one so you can work at your own pace.
Not much to say as everything was online for this semester. I'm sure next semester he is doing in person. As for my experience, If you learn well on your own, this is the class for you. No sudden due dates; everything was due by the end of the semester. This got me to work at my own pace, which is a blessing. No stress was had this semester.
I loved him as an instructor! Made math less intimidating for me. I Took him for intermediate and Algebra 1. I received Bs in both classes. It wasn't a hard class but took some effort on my part because I am not good at math.
I SUCK at math. It has never made sense to me, especially in highschool. However Metcalf has a way of teaching that made me actually understand it and gives u lots of shortcuts/tips/tricks. Def do the hw, it helps a lot. Hes incredibly helpful, caring, & engaging. Overall cool dude & probably the best math teacher Ive ever had
Pretty good teacher. Helped me understand.
Overall, Mr Metcalf is a well-rounded professor. Although its an in-person class, you use the online textbooks for all assignments. He goes over everything that will be on homework, quizzes and tests. I would definitely take him again.
Hands down the best teacher I have ever had in any subject ever. I took him for Calc 1 and 2. Those subjects are inherently difficult, but he made them not only easy to understand conceptually, but also made me realize that math is actually useful and fun. Every time we got into an new subject he would have the page from the book printed out for us
He was SO nice but he went way too fast and didn't explain the way I needed to understand. He also didn't post deadlines for anything so you can be self-paced, but that's also something I need more structure with. For these reasons, I wouldn't take it again. Again, nothing mean about him at all, just his teaching style didn't work for me.
His teaching style really worked for me. He lectures and ensures we all understand it, and if you happen to not understand Mastering has a teach me button:) Self-paced quizzes and homework, but tests are given in class so you need to understand the material. Overall, pretty easy class.
Professor Metcalf was such an amazing teacher! I learned so many new things in his class. His lectures were easy to follow and if you ever had questions, he would help. He is a very helpful and nice person. The quizzes and homework were self-paced. If you want to take a math class, I highly recommend Professor Metcalf.
This class was really easy, it was my first math class in a year since I didn't have math my senior year of HS. As long as you do the homework and quizzes on MyMathLab you will do great. The only thing I didn't like is his teaching style, instead of teaching the material and taking notes, he goes through the homework and works it out on the board.
The course material itself wasn't hard, 3 tests and the final exam took up most of the grade. Homeworks we were given as many attempts as possible, all the homework was due at the end of the semester. Quizzes were online. Teaching style doing the homework on the board did not work for me, had to go to math tutoring a lot to understand material.
Very nice and chill professor, when I saw the guitar on his wall I knew he was going to be very chill, would recommend highly. 10/10, just be decent a math lol
I really liked him. He gives fun, interesting lectures. He explained the material very clearly. He is also a very chill professor. His lectures follow the HW and quizzes so if you take notes, you'll do fine on them. His tests are tough tho. I studied a lot and still found them challenging. He gives 1/2 credit if you show your work, so just study
Professor Metcalf was a great Calculus 2 professor. The course material is naturally difficult, and he sometimes had difficulty explaining certain concepts, but as long as you ask questions and participate you should be fine. There is typically a bonus question on every test, and he makes math seem fun rather than stressful.
Professor Metcalf is by far the best math teacher I've had here. I had him last semester for intermediate algebra and I took him again for college algebra solely because of how good of a teacher he is. The way he incorporates funny stories and cracks jokes while also teaching the lesson was amazing. Take notes and you will easily pass his classes.
Affable and funny guy, just rushes through examples and seems to be unorganized a lot of the time. Your grade is almost entirely the tests at 80% -- final is not cumulative. He has admitted to blindsiding us with questions on tests. He's not a bad professor; he will help if you ask for it. Just be prepared to do a lot of self-teaching.
Do not take this teacher if you want to fail. He doesn't even really teach; he teaches you by doing the homework with you in class. He gives you a test review, but the review is nothing like the test. The test is always 10 times harder than what you actually learned.
Best math teacher ever. If you ask for help he'll explain it all to you. Funny too.
Not very organized and doesn't really teach; tests are harder than what is actually taught. You have to teach yourself a lot of the curriculum because he just skims through really fast. Also, he's kind of a creep.
He seems like a great guy. However, I wouldn't recommend taking him because he doesn't really explain what he is doing he just solves the problems and then you must teach yourself the material. As a visual learner this is hard.
Overall a very good teacher but he will just work the problems out and say what he is doing while coving the board so if you are a visual learner then this teacher may not be for you. I have always been bad at math till I took his class though and have been doing amazing.
He's a good professor overall, but his classes are very information-heavy, and he is a tough test grader. On the flip side, he is always cracking jokes and is more than willing to answer questions and meet with you after class.
Prof Metcalf was hard for me to understand in class but I hadn't seen algebra in 30 yrs, he knows it like it he back of his hand. If you had a question he was there to help. I have struggled with algebra since I have been back to school but he made time if I had a question. I recommend his class. I hope I can get him for my other math classes.
Pretty average class. He goes through and explains the math pretty well. The problem I had with him is that he doesn't seem very emotionally stable and is prone to lashing out. I'm not sure if he was just going through a rough patch at the time but it made it very difficult to ask questions and feel safe in his class.
Prof Metcalf is a great teacher for a pretty hard class - MAC2312. Your grade will come from 85% tests and 15% homework. The homework is all due at the end of the semester. This class is HARD but he gives you what you need to do well. I think only 1 one 13 people in the class dropped and no one ended up failing. Super personable and lenient.
