John Meth is a great teacher. He makes the calculus concepts easy to understand, and how much you get out of the class is how much you put into it. I got an A, but I worked hard to get it. Certainly one of the better math teachers at UT.
Rockstar pedagogy! If you are taking linear algebra, take it with John Meth. He is clear, fair, approachable, and cares about his students' success without coddling. However, as a result of all of the above (and the fact that he's not unattractive), there are usually a dozen or so calculus students hovering around him like ducklings.
Kick awesome professor. He really cares about what he does. His office hours may always have students in there but I can bet you a million bucks that he'll notice you. One time, I went in, waited for 45 minutes and then left BUT then the next time I went, I was the first one whose questions he answered. Extremely Fair and quite good looking. :)
He is a good professor. Teaches you how to approach and solve all the tricky questions on the midterms. Final was easy, accumulation of his midterms. Homework was not hard, but required some time. Study the homeworks, ace the tests.
Take this guy if possible, because you will get an A. Dr.Meth communicates very effectively and his tests are his homeworks. He takes the time to answer any type of question no matter how specific it may be. To ace his exams, study his notes and know how to do all of the homework problems. The book was barely used, only used it for series.
Meth is a great prof and I'm actually taking another one of his classes. He always wants grading to be fair and he goes over every question from exams. He's also very handsome, so try not to get distracted by that. :)
Mostly agree with others, but did find the comments about his looks odd (really people?)Meth is helpful and nice as long as you don't challenge him or disagree with him, then he does have a hot temper and the whole nice guy/caring prof act quickly fades(it was really shocking to watch). Office hours are very helpful but very crowded.
He really knows how to teach! He communicates very well. The class starts off easy but it gets pretty hard. He's nice and cracks a few jokes. He tells you exactly what to study for the exams. Good luck!
He was kind of funny, but I agree with the other commenter in that he can pull a "Jeckyll and Hyde". He does not like people who question his ideas and a dark side is unleashed. Funny guy if you toe the line, though.
He was the best prof that I have ever had!!! I made a high A in his class. He was so helpful and fair. He made calculus very fun! I still visit him a couple times every semester :)
He went over the easiest examples in class, and made you think you were ready for tests. Then he would give the hardest tests. They were like the hw's, but the hw's were also nearly impossible. Everyone went to tutoring. Averages were in the 50-60's every time. There are definetely better calculus professors out there. Try to avoid!
Awful. You think you learn alot in class and actually know nothing for the tests. Its terrible. There were people seriously concerned about their grades and he couldn't care less. He's the blandest guy I've ever met. Super monotone and boring! If you think youre great at math then go for it.
Meth teaches clearly and reasonably. The entire all 408K classes have the same course and test structure, but he is an exceptional teacher. This class isn't easy in its nature, but he's willing to help if you go to office hours, often. Reading the book helps, too.
Ridiculous tests. They were seriously the hardest tests imaginable. HW is HARD. Tests are HARD. The TA session is a HUGE waste of time. He does not care about his students. I went to several office hours, and he wanted me out of there ASAP. I regret taking this class BIG TIME!
Meth is the best professor ever! Calculus is hard which is why grades are low but not because of bad teaching. Of all the calculus professors for the semester Meth's class always had the highest test average. I'm not good at math and I couldn't of made B without all the help I got in office hours! He's awesome go to office hours!
Very clear and concise, but the examples he uses in lecture are incredibly easy compared to what Quest expects you to know on the tests/hw. His lectures are overall very dull as well (monotone). He seems nice, but not overly caring. I wouldn't recommend him if you plan to learn only from his lectures and not on your own. All the best.
I took him for a summer session (408M). He was a great teacher-really clear and always friendly and helpful during office hours. Better still, he's super funny and cool. He often started class by youtube surfing. Also, his tests and homeworks were not bad at all, though I've heard that it's different depending on what class you're taking with him.
He was a very excellent professor. His lectures were slow and thorough. He is pretty nice when it comes to questions in class. The class was not easy but manageable. I made a C+ because I got sick before the second exam and did poorly. If you get a little tutoring and read the book, all should be well. The class is not easy but hey it is UT andmath
Great Professor, any Calc at UT will be tough but definitely the professor to take calc with
One of the best professors I've had in my career. I highly recommend him at least for M408M, which was the class I was fortunate enough to have him for. Excellent course design and structure-- works problems with you during lecture (taking notes highly recommended), assigns Quest homework, gives two exams, the lowest which he drops, and a final.
BEST CALC PROFESSOR. He works out examples very similar (but much easier) to the problems on the exams. I took it in summer and I think we had 3 exams and a final, drop one exam. Exams are half mult. choice, half free response. Got 100 on the final, so it wasn't impossible! and we watched Workaholics in office hours.
GREAT! Very helpful and great at explaining. Made it easy to learn. His tests are very hard, but his final is easy. Test averages are in the 50s, but the final is so easy that you'll end up doing well in the class. He keeps 2 out of 4 test grades, so grades aren't as bad as you'd think. LOTS OF HOMEWORK, but doable.I recommend taking his class.
This is the simply the best prof at the school for math. Anyone can make an A if they pay attention and do the homeworks. And if you are having trouble go to office hours and he'll help you and learn your name most likely as well.
material is difficult, but that is to be expected. He is very clear, and he generally gives a decent curve at the end. For M408K i ended up with a B+ and averaged a B-. For M408L i hope to get a A or A-.
Best professor ever! He is so smart and funny. Tests look like homework from Quest and book, so if you practice some questions before the test, you will be fine. You will not regret taking his class.
This class is hard as balls, but Meth makes it bearable. The online HW is stupid, and doesnt prepare you for the exams at all, however, the bookwork is really similar to the test questions. Meth is not a tricky guy, his exams are straight forward, and he will tell you exactly what to focus on when studying. TAKE JOHN METH, he is great!
The subject is hard, but he's very good at making it easier to understand. He is a decent guy, and very easy to talk to, whether it's about the subject or random videos on YouTube.
Ignore the bad reviews. Tests can definitely be tricky, so you just have to learn to expect that. It's definitely manageable though, and he DOES care about his students. He explains concepts extremely well and is more than willing to answer questions. He has a dry sense of humor but I find him very entertaining at times! Also known to wear chacos
Dr. Meth is definitely the person you want to take Calc with if you're taking it at UT. He explains the material very clearly and knows calculus like the back of his hand. I came in with no prior calculus experience and I made an A in the course. However, I did have to put in quite a bit of work to earn that A, but it is most definitely achievable.
There's a lot of homework. He's very clear and will tell you what will be on exams and the final. There's four exams, but he drops two of them. The final was challenging but not impossible.
If you are an older student, I strongly suggest you don't take Meth. The guy really loves pre-cal and if you only remember a little bit of precal, you might have a tough time since he tests over a lot of pre-cal. Either take a pre-cal class first, or take a different professor that doesn't take pre-cal as seriously as this dude does.
Meth is an interesting professor. Definitely knows his stuff and explains calculus very well, but may be intimidating to some students and his tests really put you under a lot of pressure. Go to office hours for him and the TA, and you'll be fine.
I had Meth for both 408K and 408L. He won't answer questions about the grading curve, so he can come off as a hard ass, but he's just no nonsense. He was always there to help with issues and explained everything very well in his lectures. Know you Pre-Cal, Unit circle, Trig Identities, etc. Made As in both classes but had to work for it.
He is helpful if you GO TO HIM FOR HELP! He's funny, but gets very frustrated very easily when people don't cooperate aka do their homework and come to class unprepared. While attendance wasn't mandatory, he expects you to go & will judge you. Tests are like quest, but harder. Keep practicing. It's not his fault that some people didn't do well.
Meth is a great professor that is always open to answer questions about any confusion during class. He is also very helpful during office hours, so definitely attend those when necessary. He is very clear about what you should definitely know & what is probably less important. We had two 2-day exams (written on one day, quest on the other).
DO THE HOMEWORKS. The homeworks help a ton. Pay attention in lecture too and take good notes, copying down the example problems he goes through. It's only hard if you don't do the work and practice. Math is all about practice.
He's a great teacher and the lectures definitely helped me understand the math. Out of 4 tests, he dropped 2. I had set myself up for a B in the class but bombed the final. I was going to end up with a C- but he curved me up to a C+. Calculus is hard, but I would recommend this guy. He's hilarious and entertaining and he knows how to lecture.
Fantastic teacher. Makes the concepts easy to understand. Very thorough in his explanations. Homework is tough but straightforward and teaches you what you need to know for the exams. Would definitely take again. If you're gonna take math at UT, take it with Meth.
The one thing I didn't like was his sarcasm. Sometimes I legit wouldn't know how to do something and he would just make me feel dumb in front of the whole class. On a good note, his notes are really good so make sure to go to every class or get them from someone if you miss. Exams are a bit tough. Not a good experience for me.
Meth is the best calculus professor at UT. The midterms are very similar to the quest homework and the grading is reasonable. However, the final was pretty difficult and much more difficult than the midterms.
Very intimidating by calling random people to the board and do problems in class, this happened in almost every lecture during the first 34 part of my semester, and if you are not outgoingconfident enough you might feel stressed out and uncomfortable. However, he DOES explain very well and I highly recommend you go to every class and do homework.
Dr. Meth is probably one of the best professors at UT. He really achieved the impossible and actually taught me calculus. His lectures are super helpful so don't skip class. No late homework accepted after lecture begins. Drops two tests out of four. Hard final. However, great teaching method and calculus will definitely stick with me. Recommend!
Professor Meth was a very good lecturer which is especially important for math classes. He made everything easy to understand. His tests were pretty tough but his grading was not. He gives you several chances to make the best of your grade.
Meth is a great teacher in clearing things up, but it's a flipped classroom so you learn most of the material online and on your own. Going to class is extra (good) practice for tests. And make sure to go to office hours so he learns your name and face!
He's such a good teacher! He really knows what he's talking about and is very clear and direct on what he expects from you. He's also really clear about what he puts on the test too. He's really loud, but I love it because he just tells you exactly how to do things. Do the homework! Tests are somewhat easier than homework. Seriously, TAKE METH!!!
As long as you do the online modules and textbook assignments, you should be fine. His lectures are helpful, but I aced the class without attending them.
Favorite UT professor.
John was by far one of the best professors I have had at UT. He not only knows his stuff, he is very clear in his teaching style. Although class participation is not mandatory (and I did end up skipping quite a few classes close to the end), it is greatly encouraged. If you go to his office hours, he is more than willing to help and get to know you
DR. METH ROCKS- he is clear, & checks to see if everyone understands the lecture. He makes a subject I hate my favorite class, thanks to his sense of humor & personality. Go to office hours- he'll learn your name & face, and you'll get to hang with a cool guy! There's a lot of hard work, but take him if you can. Taking him for 408K & L and love it.
Always take Meth. He is one of the most chill professors I've ever met. Sometimes I stopped by his office hours just to talk to him and not go over anything calc related. Very helpful in office hours. Tells you what will be on exams. Going to lectures is worth it because he goes over tougher problems in class and sometimes exam problems.
Great professor and a fantastic lecturer! I've always had trouble with math, so I definitely struggled, but Prof. Meth was incredibly helpful and class time was used well. He gets right down to business. You absolutely have to go to class to do well and you'll want to. He's incredibly fair and understanding when it comes to grading too!
Dr. Meth is great!! Calc 2 is a hard class, but he makes the topics clear and easy to understand. Plus he teaches students so they have to put in a minimal amount of effort. Tests are standardized with the other 408L classes and quest based. Though it was an 8AM, it was very worth to have him!
Really solid professor. Very clear and helpful, just need to ask for help!
Took him for Diff EQ summer 2016. Really, really awesome guy! He is truly the best!! Really cares about his students and makes the course extremely fair. He helps whenever you need it and motivates his students to do well. One of the best math teachers I have ever had in my life. Always take Meth.
Meth is able to catch mistakes while students are describing their procedures, and is mildly approachable (not intimidating though). I can't speak for other math professors, but if you're in a STEM field (or even if you're not) and you take his class, you will come out battle-hardened with scars and all. Tests are difficult if you don't review.
He is a really cool guy. He keeps it simple and the whole course is easy to get an A in. All the homework is online (quest) and he will go over any confusing topics in class. Tests are all multiple choice and super easy, repeat quest problems.
This is the absolute best M408K professor at UT. He will always answer any questions at the beginning of lectures, and goes at the pace of the students. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. You'll receive the help you need for homework. The tests are JUST LIKE THE HOMEWORK. STUDY and it'll be worth it.
He's an incredible teacher. always accessible, never makes you feel stupid, and incredibly smart. He knows where students go wrong and helps to correct them without belittling them. Never bubble after he's called time on an exam though (he went off on a student for that once--scary)
This is by far one of the best professors at UT I have ever had, he goes out of his way to learn your name and really wants you to learn and not blindly memorize. He is also pretty hilarious I had him as an 8am and it motivated me to go to class because of how funny he was in class. Go to his office hours it is well worth it.
Super awesome guy, and great professor. I never took AP Calc in high school so I was super worried about taking calc as a first semester student at UT. You will have to work hard for the tests because a lot of material will be on each one, don't wait till the last minute. Go to office hours, study the HWs for the tests, and GO TO LECTURE.
Really does his best to help you understand, and if you put in the effort he will definitely help you out and give you tips. There is a ton of homework but it actually helps you understand the material, and gives some padding to your grade as besides that there are just 4 tests with a bit of participation points, plus he drops a ton of stuff.
I promise you. You will get an A if you study the HW's for midterms and go to lecture, discussion, and office hours. Just study the material every night and you will thank yourself. He is an amazing prof, best calc prof at UT. He goes out of his way to make sure YOU UNDERSTAND THE MATERIAL. Class was cancelled twice all semester, never said why ...
Meth is the best calculus professor at UT. He is everything a teacher should be - he cares about the material and his students. Take him if you can! As far as this course went, there were 3 exams and a final, along with learning modules and homework. Calculus is a tough class - but an A is definitely achievable if you put in the effort.
Awesome teacher who explains things well. Go to his office hours and drop in tutoring at the Sanger Learning Center. The Test grades don't reflect how well you know the information though; you'll make silly mistakes that'll cost you a whole question. Very approachable and caring.
John was the best professor I had for my first semester at UT. Very caring about his students.
He is an awesome teacher. Very personal and passionate about what he is teaching. This makes the course so much easier to enjoy. Go to his office hours because that where all the good stuff is. He really is a great teacher.
He called people up to the board at random from the roster for attendance and participation. It was scary at first but everyone has to do it and I felt supported by him and the rest of the class. He's efficient and thorough and funny. He expects a great deal from you but he knows his stuff and is very good at answering questions.
Prof Meth is an overall great professor. Although not mandatory, it's a must to go to lecturers as he explains the topics in the learning module very effectively. There is hw due once a week, and during the TA discussion times they will pretty much go over it. The tests are based off the hw, so if you know those problems/concepts you'll do fine.
Great professor, helps students out a lot to understand calculus
John Meth is a fantastic man. My original calculus teacher was fired part way through the semester and this saint of a man picked up his workload. One of the best teachers i've ever had the privilege of being taught by.
BEST CALCULUS PROFESSOR EVER
Dr. Meth can easily break a difficult concept down into one that even someone who hasn't seen calculus in years can understand. The course is homework heavy, which can be frustrating, but when exam time comes, you've done so many problems that even if your brain doesn't know what to do, your hands do. Every exam is as straightforward as it gets.
Dr. Meth is definitely the best calculus professor I've ever had. Go to class, pay attention, do the homework, and you're golden. Exams are really easy and one is dropped. He is very easy to talk to, kind and helpful. I highly recommend taking this class - you'll actually understand the material and you'll get an A if you put in a little effort.
Math isn't my cup 'O tea, but I ended up loving it with Meth. This man is amazing at simplifying concepts without being condescending. There is a lot of HW, and the tests (1 "superscored") counts for the bulk of your grade which is scary, but it is manageable. Meth made the class never seem like a chore, he is so kind, respectful and hilarious.
Professor Meth is the best calculus teacher at the University of Texas. He explains concepts with clarity, incorporates advantageous class participation, and effectively teaches students how to think in a calculus class. The M408L course load can be an overwhelming amount of work, but Meth makes it manageable, worthwhile, and (dare I say) fun.
Professor Meth was awesome! He was enthusiastic about the subject, has clear grading criteria, and genuinely had the student's best interest in mind when teaching. Very helpful in grasping what Quest might not have clearly explained and was an overall fantastic teacher.
There are probably only a few professors who will change your life. Prof. John is one of them. He is without a doubt the best professor I have ever met. I hadn't taken calc in high school and was actually really afraid of math (needed to a high GPA to get into McCombs) and he changed all of that. He is a great teacher, and an even better person.
I love this beautiful man. He makes the class participate but doesn't make you feel stupid and is all about "learning from your mistakes." He really wants you to do well.
Literally couldn't say anything bad about Dr. Meth! By far, the BEST calc professor UT has ever had. He's smart, relatable and really cares for his students; lectures are very well thought out and easy to comprehend. He always teaches to the tests so there is no suprise on exam day. Two midterms, two days each, and final (85% of grade) w/ daily HW.
This guy knows how to make calculus a little enjoyable, but the subject itself is still hard to understand if you don't have a mind for math. This professor knows the material well and can present it well, but you'll have to practice a lot of questions outside of class and the homework can be challenging, but are helpful. His tests are super easy.
Meth is such a great professor. His lectures are easy to understand, better than the modules on Quest. The class is test heavy as there are 3 exams and a final exam. Each exam counts for 20% and final exam counts for 30%. Do your homework and if you have any questions, go to his office hours. I was supposed to get a B but with a curve, I got A-!
Went from having Schultz first semester to Meth second semester and the change is like night and day. Meth is the best calculus professor I've ever had. He made the material so easy to understand, usually teaching the material better than the online videos. Always answered my questions without making me feel dumb for asking them.
This class was tough for me, I almost considered dropping at mid-semester. I would have done worse in here had I not already been in linear algebra. Hard to prepare for tests because the textbook is shoddy and the practice problems aren't very helpful. Sometimes he makes things overly complicated, but he's an organized lecturer.
Tests are tough, but he does curve a lot at the end since so many people drop out before. From what I've heard he changed his teaching strategy from the years before, so he doesn't make the tests in class anymore. I thought I was going to get a C but ended up with a B in the end. Best of the diff eq professors by far
He is a very tough grader and counts points off for computation errors which is a bit annoying for differential equations but his lectures more than make up for it. He's also very clear about what will and won't be covered on the tests. Best math professor I had at UT.
He's absolutely great as a professor you WILL definitely learn! The only issue I encountered was his testing method. I felt rather than the tests, testing my knowledge of the material, it was more of a race against time, he knows this too. In office hours he'd say I know the material, but his testing method was my downfall.
he is an absolutely great lecturer. he goes into detail about how to solve a problem and makes sure that you understand what is going on. I recommend to try not to skip class because there is a lot of material covered and it will be hard to catch up. however, his tests throw everyone off bc of the level of difficulty, and limited time he gives you
What an amazing human being. Sometimes got distracted by how attractive he is but damn I love this man and his lectures. I fell in love the moment I heard one of his lectures. Much better than most Calc professors. TAKE HIM.
Meth was a great professor for 427J! He is very knowledgeable about the subject matter and is a very good lecturer. The class was difficult because he is a hard grader but he tells you exactly what he expects from you so the grading was fair. Overall a good class and professor.
Great professor, he really cares about the material and student's success. His lectures are great and well thought out and he's helpful outside of class. All the tests were straightforward except for the second one which dealt with more theory. But overall, he's probably the best math professor I've ever had.
He has to be one of the best overall teachers I have ever had. His lectures are engaging and thorough, and he makes it very clear what is expected of you. His tests are very straightforward but can be a little punishing if you're prone to arithmetic errors.
Best Math professor at UT.
Dr. Meth is a fantastic teacher for any proof-based math class in my opinion. He stresses understanding the definitions in class, which is crucial to successfully writing good proofs. I felt that I not only learned the material very well because of his teaching methods, but also became much better prepared for upper-level proof-based math classes.
He is very concise, teaches exactly what you need for the test, and is respectful of all kinds of questions. His voice is slightly monotonous during lecture, where it is easy to doze off, but overall he gives great lectures. Homework is not graded.
John would set up his office hours and literally work through the homework problems that would be modeled similarly on the tests. He didn't care about attendance and was a great professor to have first semester in college.
This man is the GOAT. He explains linear and diff eq really well, but you gotta show up or else you won't get the material. The textbook is way harder to learn from. Homework is completely optional, just gotta make sure you're paying attention.
I have no idea what happened in this class, but I was at least one standard deviation above the averages on all tests and quizzes (the only assignments), and I got a B. Not a B+ or A-. A flat B. This man IS NOT GENEROUS when it comes to grading and curving at the end of the semester.
This class took my soul. I bombed the first exam but ended up making a 99 on the final. How? I went to office hours EVERY day and did the hw 2x. Dr. Meth may seem intimidating in class, but he's actually pretty cool. His expectations are insanely high but if you put the time and effort into it, you can do it. Little to no curve (5 points max)
If you are not willing to put ur heart and soul into diff eq then dont take Meth. Even when I practiced everyday for 2+ weeks before the final, I still bombed it. The people who ended up passing and doing well had gone to his office hours at least every week and did the textbook problems often. Most ppl dropped the class. try to take Blazek
Even if you understand the material well, any tiny mistake you make will reflect. He does not give partial credit, and you have only 50 minutes for exams on work that takes at least 90 minutes to do well. He does not show mercy, and WILL FAIL you. I recommend taking anyone but him, unless you have a strong Algebra background.
Try taking any other teacher. Absolutely will not pass if you don't put 20+ hours of diff eq work a week. Seemed like he gave almost no partial credit on all free response quizzes and exams, with the averages being in the 50-60 range. His final curve was only like 5 points. Good luck if you decide to take him!
Worst professor Ive had In my life. Tests are REALLY hard, you have 50 minutes and its open response. To do well, youd need at least 90 minutes. And he does not give partial credit or check work. Lots of people dropped his class, averages were around 60, and he gives barely any curve. Hell be more than happy to fail you
Averages for the first two exams were less than 60%. The third exam average was a 63. No curve.
The man really knows his stuff but this is a nightmare of a class. All test averages were below 60% with no curve what so ever. When asked if there would be curve he replied with "I will give the grade you deserve". Test were unfairly timed as you get 50 minutes on a test that requires 90 minutes. Majority of the class dropped. Good luck.
Meth is a very knowledgeable professor with a deep understanding of differential equations and is a very clear lecturer. While an effective teacher, his tests can get pretty challenging as he wants to make sure that his students really understand the material. His tests can be pretty fast, but you are given enough time to solve the problems.
Great lecturer but unfairly timed tests. Difficult exams, quizzes, and final. Tends to throw curveballs on an exam using topics learned in class on questions never seen before. Learned a lot but did not think it was a fair class.
One of the best math professors I have had at UT Austin. He gives very thorough and clear lectures that include everything you need to know for his tests. He talks about math in a way that makes it seem simple. I would definitely recommend attending the lectures. He is a very cool, intelligent guy, and he seems to genuinely care about his students.
Best professor, clear on his lectures and teachings. Go to lectures and do the homeworks and you will get an A.
Meth is one of the best math lecturers at this university. He's funny and doesn't go out of his way to make thing difficult. He offers to go over homework in class (all homework is from the textbook), and his exams are EXACTLY what he emphasizes in class.
If you don't write answers in exactly the form specified in class he will take off points.
Dr. Meth is an amazing mathematician, and you will learn a lot from his lectures. However, what you learn from his lectures will not help you on the tests. He is a wonderful person, and his office hours are super helpful, but if you don't do the homework consistently and prepare for the weirdly formatted exam questions, you will have a tough time.
Meth took 2 points off my exam because I wrote an answer as bax instead of b-ax0. I am not flipping joking. The fact is, algebra has been figured out, but not by this teacher.
I don't know what these other people below me are talking about. Dr. Meth is a solid choice because he is very knowledgeable in this field, and he is very very clear on what is going to be on the test and how he wants his answers formatted. Just pay attention in lecture and try to actually understand what he is teaching, then it is an easy A.
This is definitely NOT an easy A course even if youre attending lecture full time. You must apply yourself on the homework assig. or you will fail since lecture is nowhere near enough to get by. Exams tend to be much harder than youd expect, with a D average for the most part. Simply expect to put plenty of time in practicing problems daily.
Meth is the best option you can have for M427J. His lectures are amazing and right on point. He does not take attendance but if you don't go to class, you'll have very hard time trying to learn it by yourself. He is very clear about what he wants for the tests. Overall the course is quite difficult but you will definitely learn a lot in this class.
Fantastic lecturer and just an all around great guy. Tests are fairly straightforward and similar to problems done in class, but they're also a hard time crunch and minor mistakes are heavily penalized. Be sure to do homework, show up to class, and be reasonably quick at math in general or this class might become a nightmare. 20% of kids get an A.
If you're confident in your mathematical abilities, take him. He's the best lecturer I've had at UT, and his tests are very straightforward. However, due to his inane grading criteria, it's difficult to do well on his exams. Class averages are straight 70s (and afaik he doesn't curve), which means half will be failing or getting low Cs.
Dr. Meth is very talented, and knows exactly what he is doing. However, the class often doesn't. Make sure to keep up with the Linear Algebra postings if you want to make a good grade. Tests are very unforgiving (mine were fill in the blank). As someone who loves mathematics, I want to warn y'all to be ready to practice, a lot and be a L.A. master.
M408K: go to office hours or the calculus lab or anywhere that has STEM tutoring, made an A- M408L: went to office hours for hwks and learning modules if I did not understand. ended with an A M427J: HARDEST math class to date. His TA and himself are CARING if you visit their Office Hours. He handpicks the BEST TA every semester!!! Ended with B
Sis, do yourself a favor and take someone else for diffeq
Phenomenal professor, the best I've had so far. His 427J is hard but very much worth it. 11/10 would take again.
Meth is such a cool and smart teacher! I took him for a summer session for Differential Equations and he explained everything very thoroughly. He let us vote on the test topics. The tests were free response, but he told us everything to expected. You should go to class b/c its hard math, but you can miss a few.
big grades big headache makes me want to quake
Nice guy. Tough grader. Word on the street is he likes to fail a lot of people. Choose your grading criteria and curving wisely this semester, John.
This teacher is the GOAT. He is a sadist but besides that 10/10
Dr. Meth was a great professor and I thoroughly enjoyed learning from him. His lectures were full of clear explanations and examples to drive points home. He took time to answer questions from students so that everyone was on the same page. The exams were challenging, as is to be expected, but were fair and completely in line with the expectations.
Pros: Meth is a great lecturer and as long as you do the homework and go to office hours youll understand even the abstract concepts pretty well. Cons: If youre someone who sucks at doing arithmetic quickly get ready to be absolutely eviscerated by the exams. No credit for work so any errors you make in RREF will completely destroy your grade.
The class avg was about 58 and there was about 7-8 points curve. Very tough grader and wont respond to your emails. However, he is an amazing lecturer and you will fail the class if you skip his lectures. Another good thing is that there is no homework, but you still have to put a lot of effort every week to catch up with the material.
Meth is a fantastic lecturer, but you will need to put in a considerable amount of effort outside of class to be successful. His midterms are difficult to complete in the time you are given, and he grades them pretty tough. Practice doing problems quickly, study hard for the final (which replaces your lowest midterm), and don't count on a big curve
Meth is a great professor and his class is really fun. I learned a lot and would definitely take him again. The 2 midterms are not hard, but we only had 50 minutes so time was a big issue. But he replaces the lowest midterm grade with the final if it helps.
Meth was a good professor. His office hours were extremely beneficial. There was a small curve at the end and he also replaces your lowest midterm grade with the final, if it results in a better final grade.
Attending lectures and doing homework is not mandatory but do both if you don't want to fail. The 1st midterm is rough because you won't be used to NOT taking your time, but the final replaces your lowest midterm and he's clear about what's on the tests. Just practice problems with a timer to make sure you're fast enough for the exams.
So many people q-dropped and OTEd. WIsh I was one of them. Harsh grader, incredible lecturer. Didn't give us our exam 2 until after the q-drop and OTE deadline, and then misled us into thinking we can do well if we got a 100 on the final (final exam was incredibly difficult). Don't know why catalyst says he gives mostly As, 10 people I knew got Cs
He talks to you in class like he's on your side and then he has no problem giving you a 30 on every exam for silly errors. Row reduction is so easy to mess up, and if you get it wrong you get a ZERO, no work credit. Straightforward exams but absolutely no time to do it correctly. Completely unfair since you can know the content but still fail
He is so nice. After we transitioned to online, his grading changed to benefit us! He can be confusing in class and focuses on theory, but the theory never shows up on the tests -- just computation. I see a lot of people complaining about his tests, but the one in class test I did take was really easy and manageable. I took harder tests in 408D.
Dr. Meth is one of the best professors I've ever had due to his amazing lectures, in which he thoroughly explains concepts. However, the concepts are hard and most of his class is based on tests (80%) and quizzes (20%). Try to do well early in the class. Very helpful during office hours as well and can answer any questions you may have.
Meth is one of my favorite professors I've had so far. Tests are hard, but if you do well on quizzes (basically sample test questions) and do the homework (not req.) then you will be fine. Good lecturer and explains things really logically. He really does care abt his students, made it impossible to not get an A in his class during COVID stuff
Absolute Legend. Really cares about his students. Every lecture was well organized and informative. Quizzes and Tests don't have too much partial credit even though they are FRQs. Expectactions are CLEARLY DEFINED. He tells you exactly what you need to know for each quiz and exam, so you can perform your best. Typically ended lectures early too.
Personally I think it's a shame that Meth is usually everyone's 2nd option for 427J. He kept me interested in class and is one of the best professors I've had. People say that exams are difficult but personally I did 95% of the optional HW and found the exams to be relatively simple since he tells you what to expect. Really cares about students.
His class is fun and comfortable. You don't have to participate, but it's more fun if you do. He makes everything you need to know very clear. His non-corona test was difficult, but he says he might change his test style to be easier. Sometimes it seems like he doesn't care, but that somehow makes him a better professor?
Amazing professor, straight to the point, goes in-depth with explaining how to solve problems. Exams are mad easy, they are exactly like the practice problems done in class. Hands down one of the best professors at UT.
This man is an angel sent from heaven itself, but if I'm going to be real, his class was no joke pre-COVID-19. His lectures are pretty good overall, but get ready to put in some work and do a lot of HW (not mandatory) to perform well. Tests are difficult but doable if you do so. Just make sure to go to office hours for help if you struggle.
Dr Meth was probably my favorite professor so far. He's brilliant, witty, and a nice guy, and he makes everyone feel welcome. This class material is difficult, but he always explains it well to make it manageable. Grade is completely based off of tests and quizzes, but they aren't too difficult if you went to class and do the optional homework.
Great professor, very knowledgeable and articulate. Once corona happened, he made sure to accommodate our online learning in every way, and made the tests and quizzes very easy, since everyone was dealing with other stuff. Great overall
Post-COVID he is the best math teacher you can ask for at UT. Cares deeply for his students, cares more about the student understanding the material than the student stressing over grades, is very lenient and a great lecturer, and also likes talking about video games. There really isn't any reason to not take his class.
This is the best professor I have had at UT. He is super caring and consider sate about the pandemic. His lectures are easy to follow and he is hilarious, this was the only class I actually enjoyed attending. If you don't pass this class with a B or better then you didn't put any effort in. He gives you many opportunities to allow you to get an A
I heard Dr. Meth used to be tough, but then he became very easy and chill. Even though he isn't the best lecturer in number theory and that he isn't interested in it, he made the class super easy and not tedious in order for me to end up with 100 for final grade. Also, when he answers emails, he should be a little more detailed.
Dr. Meth was a great teacher to have for DIFF EQ. He clearly told us how to do well on the content which made it easy to get a good grade (as long as you understand what is going on of course). The only negative comment I have is that he has a hard time reading emails and responding to them properly. This is unimportant though for most people.
2 open-book exams and short HW every week. Really enjoyed the class overall
Seems rough during lecture but one on one hes a gem!
Dr. Meth is amazing and one of those professors you want to fight to get! He is very knowledgeable and gives clear lectures, but grades very easily. He's all about you learning the material, so the class is pretty stress-free. Very caring and loves to talk with his students. You pretty much put in as much effort as you want.
If you're looking for a sign to take this professor, this is it.
Meth's class transcends the entire idea of an accommodating online class, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more accommodating professor and class. Seriously, it was harder to not get an A than it was to get an A this semester.
Dr. Meth was very caring and accommodating throughout the semester, including during the snow storm. He made the quizzes and tests very accessible and doable for an online class, while still teaching the material very clearly and in-depth. He has awesome resources to self-learn the material on his website as well. I highly recommend his class.
Professor Meth is the reason why online learning can be potent in some regards. His class is the opposite of busy work completely with only 10-minute lectures and easy quizzes. Furthermore, group work in this course is actually encouraged even on exams. If that didn't sound good enough already, you only need 75% of the total points for an A+.
Incredibly chill class during the pandemic. Gave everyone 100s for the exam schedule during the snowstorm. Explained content very well + showed very cool applications. Very easy to get an A.
His summer 2021 class was very accommodating. Approx 10 minute lecture videos (asynchronous) and one short quiz each day. I bought the book and never opened it. He rounded up a 75 in each section to a 100 (very hard to not get an A if you do the work)
Super easy grading but a very good teacher. I took the class over the summer online and you only need 75% of assignments to get an A+, so you dont have to stress about the grade and instead focus on material. That being said, I learned a lot starting from nothing since his explanations were pretty clear and he didnt try to trick us on quizzes
He has recorded videos over the topics in case you need extra help. Always friendly and the type of professor to make sure you understand. Be prepared for weekly quizzes, one question, but nothing to worry about since he gives plenty of examples to prepare you.
Actually cares about you understanding topics.
Meth is easily the best professor I've ever had. He cares about his students, frequently jokes around with everyone, and loves his family as much as he loves teaching. I never thought I would say this but I LOVE METH.
Meth, although an easy A, does not challenge his students to learn at all. I felt like I had to teach myself differential equations. He's just not very engaging at all and doesn't really require or expect anythign of you, so I feel like I wasn't really pushed to learn anything.
Dr. Meth has got to be one of the best professors I have taken as an undergrad. He is extremely funny and wants his students to learn. Lectures were recorded in case you could not make it to class and exam and quiz questions were very similar to example problems done in class. Take him for your math classes you won't regret it! B)
Bro.... take him please
Meth is one of the kindest professors who genuinely cares about his students. He explains concepts well, and his class is an easy A. I took him when his class was virtual, and the tests were all take home which made it less stressful. He encourages collaboration with others and tailors the class to what students want.
dr. meth is goated, took him during COVID and we just had weekly quizzes and tests that we could collaborate on with other students. super chill, great lecturer, learned a lot from his class. take him he's amazing.
Meth was by far the most gamer of all my professors at UT. Also his course was easy and easy to follow. amazing professor, and kept my life from being miserable.
Dr. Meth was the first math teacher I've had that actually made me excited about what I was learning. He was such an incredible, relatable, approachable lecturer. He always made sure to answer all student questions, and worked his examples slowly to where we all could understand. Don't skip class... he covers a lot in each lecture. A gem of UT.
THE BEST!!!!!!!! YOU WANT HIM AS YOUR TEACHER. TRUST ME. TAKE NOBODY ELSE. ONLY TEACHER THAT COMES CLOSE IS BLAZEK, BUT METH IS STILL THE GOAT PROFESSOR AND THE BEST!!!!
OMG HE IS SO GOOD AT TEACHING. COME TO CLASS! HE IS FUNNY, MAKES MATH FUN AS HECK! YOU WILL LEARN A LOT AND GET A GREAT GRADE! IF YOU TAKE ANYONE ELSE, I'M SORRY, BUT YOU ARE AN IDIOT. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST. METH IS THE BEST.
Dr. Meth truly is a gem. His lectures are very clear and he's so funny. He makes math fun and easy to understand. Tests and quizzes are the same level of difficulty as the examples given in class. If you try, you'll definitely do well in this class. Take him!
LOVED DR. METH!
A prof whose main goal is to help you learn. Incredibly easy A (basically a completion grade). But since almost no one would take this class for no reason, he provides you with everything to understand the material for future use. Esp if you're an engineering major, he will teach you diff eq. FOR APPLICATION. Doesn't get overly technical.
Dr. Meth is an amazing professor and a great choice for M427J. His quizzes and exams are take-home and he encourages working with other students to best learn the material. He welcomes questions during lectures and is very clear in his explanations. He is super kind and you can tell he enjoys his class and helping people succeed. Take him!
Taking M427J with Professor Meth was the best decision I've ever made. All his assignments (quizzes and tests included) are take-home and he encourages collaboration. This class was so easy it felt like high school.
I LOVE METH!!! Meth was a great prof and was one of the least work-intensive classes I've taken at UT. Lectures are good to sit and listen and then use his website to reinforce, practice, and learn with greater depth. All exams and quizzes were take home and allowed to work with classmates. Highly recommend.
As an engineering major, this has been my favorite math class in college. He never got bogged down in theory, he just showed what you would need and how to apply it. He pre-recorded mini-lectures that would explain everything you needed in a fraction of the time that the lecture would take.
"If you have a pulse, you'll get an A in this class"
Meth is an absolute god. His lectures are so immensely clear and he teaches in a way that students actually learn the material, which makes you never want to miss class. He is also incredibly lenient with homeworks and tests and will do them in class if you ask him. Also moderately funny. Really wish he taught more upper divs! 10/10 no doubt.
Best lecturer I've had. He's really great at building up to a concept and explaining thought processes. His tests and quizzes are exactly like examples worked in lecture. Homework is not required, so I'll take full responsibility for not retaining much from the class. That would be my only complaint, and it's 100% my fault. Man should do standup
Very chill guy, easy class, and a great way to learn differential equations. I am a huge fan.
Very clear (and, dare I say, easy) grading scheme. Posts 20-minute or so videos for each concept, then there's a short assignment corresponding to it. He also follows closely to Braun's textbook, so you can always do some reading if his video isn't enough. Repeat this each class day and add in some exams of similar structure, and that's his M 427J.
Incredibly easy class and I feel like I learned the material sufficiently. Loved his lectures, he was very straightforward and simple to understand. The GOAT
i love this guy take him!! easiest A
Very very easy class if you attend lectures
Professor Meth's class is very straightforward. Your grade consists of take-home quizzes and exams. Exams usually consists of problems similar to previous quizzes. He usually works similar problems on quizzes and exams in class. The material might be a little difficult to comprehend, but it is very hard to not get a good grade if you try
The homework consisted of weekly quizzes that were 1-2 questions up until the last 3-4 weeks (then they became longer, but doable). Exams are take-home, including the final, and he encourages collaboration on these and the HWs. He has a unique sense of humor that keeps me from dozing off in class. Discussions are IMPORTANT for first couple of weeks
Professor Meth is truly amazing at what he does. I took his Summer online course and he provided us with daily video lectures that help you understand the topics perfectly, which is pretty great for an upper division math class. Please, please, please take his course!!
Best professor ever. EVERYTHING is take-home and you're encouraged to work with friends. Such a low-stakes grading scheme made me MORE motivated to come to class and do the work. I found myself not needing my notes because I actually retained info from lectures. Some really fun real-world examples, too. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! You will get an A.
If you can take him, DO IT! He is the best professor I have ever had everything is take home and more points are available than you need to get a 100. No final.
Super easy class, great professor, definitely take him because spots fill fast. He has a points pool system for tests and quizzes, point is you need a 75 on every exam to earn an A for the course. I attended all the lectures cause it was fun to learn his diff eq techniques but you don't need to. My friend never went to class and prob got an A too.
The reviews weren't lying. Dr. John Meth is THE best choice for M 427J.
Very straightforward lecturer, grading is fairly simple and hard to not have an A
Take notes from lectures and everything in the class will be easy
One of the easiest classes I have taken at UT! There are 4 midterm exams and weekly quizzes, which are online. He actually encourages you to work with friends. His lectures are informative, but a little boring at times. Overall, he was a great diff eq professor and provided a fun experience.
After failing the class in the spring of '24 with Dr.Turnquist, I had low hopes for being able to understand Diffeq. I walked out the first day understanding more from that one lesson than I have ever understood with Turnquist. His lectures are clear and concise, and his grading makes it easy to get an A. Take Meth if you can,you will not regret it
Professor Meth's lectures are fantastic, and were very worth it. He provides a lot of useful resources, including websites, PDF's, and online guides. All exams and homework assignments were online. If anything, my only criticism for Professor Meth is that his class was too easy, and he could have gone deeper into the subject.
Professor Meth makes this class a breeze. Grab your friends, as the take-home work is highly encouraged. unstuckstudy and the textbook are solid resources too. Attendance is key, but you can ace this course.
made diff eq a way easier class, cares about you wanting to pass, quizzes and exams are take home and he encourages you to work with friends. going to his lectures is easier (and most of the time more helpful) than watching them online, beware it can be hard to keep up sometimes as he writes at insane medieval scribe speed
Very good professor! If you can get him you should, he's very nice/relatable and makes jokes during class Very forgiving grading scale and he answers questions and moves through the course at the right pace.
Literally the easiest math class at UT. All exams and quizzes are take home and he encourages you to use notes and work with other people. Made a hard topic easier as this class was low stress. Definitely recommend and if you actually want to learn the material I recommend going to lecture though most people did not.
Impossible to score less than A. Only need to get a 75% to recieve an A. js attend lectures and ur fine lol. Tests are a little hard but come on u can get a 75% lmao. so light
I really enjoy Prof. Meth as a teacher and person. His lectures were engaging and his grading polices are very relaxed, meaning his class is able to be enjoyed, not super stressed over. He is the best math prof I've ever had. Plus, he's super fun to talk to before/after class. Really nice social guy. Would recommend if you can get him!
goat. class is so easy need a 75 for a 100 and like a 67ish for an A. tells us whats on the in person tests, half the exams are online and lets us work with friends. in general seems like a good guy in the interactions ive had with him and hes a pretty good lecturer although at times he can go a tad bit too fast. his ta is also really good
This guy is literally a godsend. His grading criteria basically means you only need a 75% to get an A in the class. Lectures are great, he's funny, and he goes through a LOT of examples to make sure you understand. "We love meth" we all say in unison
Amazing professor. Very easy grading, which takes the stress off you as a student. Content was super interesting and lectures were insightful. Consider yourself lucky if you get to experience his class.
Chillest math prof at UT. His lectures are good and he likes to talk about real world applications. No HW, the only grades are weekly quizzes and 4 exams (everything take-home). He doesn't take attendance, but it's still important to show up to class because he wants you to solve problems a very specific way (he will penalize you if you don't).
Dr. Meth's grading system is super low-stress and his lectures are really interesting and clear. He doesn't confuse you with a bunch of extra fluff that you don't need to know and he provides super interesting real-world applications for many of the concepts you'll learn in class. He does seem to really value attendance, so show up to class!
soon kwan jeong is the goat.
Extremely easy to make an A. You only needed to earn 75 points out of 100 to make a 100%. Overall, amazing professor and a chill class
Dr. Meth is the GOAT. Although the textbook questions were difficult, his exams were direct and nothing too crazy. His grading is very forgiving as well since you really only need to get a 75% on the exams and homework to get an A in the class. He is very personable so I recommend going to office hours even if you do not have a math question!
One of the easiest and stress free classes I have ever taken at ut austin, the take home tests and assignments really puts an emphasis towards learning without the stress of taking a test.
Extremely forgiving grading system. He basically structures the class in such a way that NOT getting an A is impossible unless you didn't follow his instructions. Even though everything is take-home/asynchronous, including exams, you will end up learning everything more clearly than you would with another professor. Great professor and a great guy.
Super free, all tests/quizzes are online and you are encouraged to work with others. His videos were concise and taught exactly what you needed to know.
Extremely easy; online tests and quizzes that you don't even need a 100 on to get full credit. The only way you can't get a 100 is if you don't pay attention in class and forget about the assignments and get saved by your roommates.
Very good lecturer, easy grading on assignments. Stress-free class. The only way to not meet the 75% point threshold is if you forget to do the assignments, don't ever show up to lecture, and can't find anyone to help you.
Easiest class I have ever taken & probably will ever take. Despite this, probably as a result of me not going to lecture, I feel I didn't learn much. If I did Meth again, I would show up to lecture and actually learn the content.
By far the easiest M427J professor. It's a very low stress class and his lectures are pretty good. My only warning is to make sure you pay attention. If you lose motivation, you won't learn, and you will probably still get an A. It just might come back to hurt you in later semesters. Definitely take him if you can, though.
If you value learning, don't take him, he is not a good lecturer as they say but the class is free as long as you follow the method he wants you to do when solving problems. He talks fast and just does the problems in front of you.
absolute goat. if you left a bad review its prob because you don't like things being easy for you. whole class is online tests and you need to get a 75% on everything to get a 100. ex. 75% on quizzes = 100 in gradebook. pretty decent lecturer and easy grader. would take this class again in a heartbeat
Such a cool guy! This close has been the best math course I have taken. Can be demanding since there are assignments every week. He never judged when you had questions. GO TO CLASS. His lectures break things down very well, and are very similar to the exams.
I actually attended lectures—they were super engaging and made this class SO simple. Makes it incredibly easy to get an A, and the class format was very easy to follow. The math can be complex, but it's broken down so well that succeeding becomes straightforward. Cannot stress enough how this professor SAVED my semester!
Prof Meth is an amazing professor! Not only does he go over many problems in lecture, but he gives many different examples and ways to think about a problem. Once you get to the quizzes and exams, you know how to do the problems just by being in class!
