Dr. Mickey is one the best Professors I have ever had, he makes Chemistry FUN and easy to understand! Very clear. But he will make you work hard.
Very funny guy~ don't have to study a lot to get an A. even tho he talks a lot, but very interesting lectures.
Great teacher, not too easy, but the only way to enjoy chemistry!!!
great teacher..very funny..makes chem very interesting..too bad he's not teaching chem 180
This was the best class ever! He's always super hyper on Mountain Dew and makes Chem interesting. There's a lot of assignments, but they're pretty easy. I thought it was an easy A.
full of energy, can make a boring subject sound more fun than it is, he gives 110% in all lectures, never saw him in a bad mood and he was always clear and easy to understand. very funny guy. his lectures are even better than reading the text book.
Mick for your info, I will not take Chem 180. LOL!! Mick's one heck of a teacher. He is there for students who need help and is very clear about what is expected in the course. Dont get frustrated in front of him though because he'll feed off of that.
awsome professor!!! always there to help. energetic/enthusiatic about teaching... take him.
hyper... wako... energetic... learn a lot... always there to help. perfect professor for chemistry.
He's the best Chem teacher you'll ever have! He has a special gift for making the subject cool and easy to grasp. He's very funny, you'll never want to miss a class.
THIS CLASS IS REALLY HARD!I FIND THE LECTURES NOT EXCITING, JUST LOUD AND HIM RUNNING AROUND. HALF OF THE CLASS IS SPENT HIM MAKING THE RETARDED SYMBOL AND INSULTING YOU IF YOU DONT UNDERSTAND A CONCEPT (HE WILL ONLY MAKE A GENERAL COMMENT).
Such a fun class! Mickey is soooo funny and always hyped on Mountain Dew. He explains things in a way so that everyone can understand. It is very easy to get an A in the class...you just can't be lazy, and you have to do all your homework and prelabs.
even if u hate chemistry course in general, this guy can make fun out of the subject

the class is not very hard as long as you stay awake in class, which isn't hard since the prof. is constantly cracking jokes, and write down his lectures. it's also best to take his labs.
OCCS #1 Favorite chem teacher. dont take him unless you want to learn chemistry. He assigns a lot of work, the class is hard, you wont pass without learning chemistry. He is great. Super, fantastic. If youre not into hard work take art.
Totally cool teachr, very energetic, get to have ontecard on midterm and final, if you study its easy.
He likes to joke a lot. Pay attention in class and you'll do well.
you will never again in your life have such an awesome, intelligent, enthusiastic teacher for anything. you will learn chem. and laugh while doing it. very highly recommended.
Best chem teacher ever!
He is so funny. Even if you dont like chem you will like it with Mickey. It is easy all you have to do is pay attention in class and take his notes. He's an awsome teacher!!!
he's such a kick, he's constantly saying something funny but at the same time i've learned a lot. before the class i was really scared about chem, now i'm more relaxed and know that i can do it. highly recommend him.
Laux is funny. You won't fall asleep. But he won't let you out a minute early from class. He uses his minutes wisely. Wish he taught higher chem courses.
I took his Chem class last fall, and it was so much fun! He told great stories that related to the topics we were learning, and his lectures make everything easy to understand. Sometimes, he was just really hyped up on Mountain Dew. It was a great time!
Course is interesting but tests and quizzes are difficult. Come to every class and take notes!!! No need to purchase book. All tests are off the lectures. He's really hyper and crazy. One complaint is that he swears A LOT in class and it gets kind of annoying after a while.
I like Dr. Laux because he is funny and he is crazy. THe tests covers everything from the lecture. He is also clear when lecturing the class. The only thing I don't like from him is that he gives you too many questions on the final for a little bit of time. I don't think he's fair in that.
Dr. Laux is a great professor and i love his calss. he is very energatic and funny. don't worry you won't get bored in his class. just one advise, do all your home works and try to be quick on the exams or otherwise you run out of time.
If you attend every class and do the easy journal homework, you will pass. He is very passionate and young with tons of energy for teaching. If you have to take chemistry you couldn't do better than him.
Very energetic teacher which really made the class fun and easy to cope with. I hope that he doesn't go anywhere.
one guy pointed out that he swears a lot. It's true, but once he told ME to watch MY mouth!
One of the best teachers I ever had. Made me enjoy chem, a class I had avoided for five years. I didn't find his class to be very difficult as long as you went to class and did the homework.
TAKE THIS GUY! He's one crazy chem teacher. The guy has a can or two of energy drink(s) every morning. very animated character with lots of knowledge. keep your cells off during class... he'll pick it up for you :)
horray for mickey!!
mickey rules!!! this guy is capped on mt. dew every morning so you know he is sorted. he gives a better understanding of chem to all. keep it out man! wish there were more chem teachers like him.
He's very unhelpful when it comes to asking question. Sometimes I think he's on steroid or something.
He is a great teacher and makes Chemistry as interesting as I guess it can be by drinking energy drinks every morning! Grades on a curve, too.
BEST Chem professor. HE IS EXTREMELY CLEAR DURING HIS LECURES. He is very fair on tests and on grading system. His class is not hard. He is very passionate about chemistry and makes the class very interesting. He is funny in a crazy way. TAKE HIM. YOU WILL NOT HATE CHEM.
id have to say he's the BEST teacher i've EVER had!! i used to not like chem so much but he made me LOVE chem! great teacher very easy SOOO FUNNY!! *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED*
Strongly Recommended - very clear, high amount of HW, but if you do it, you will be in good shape for quiz/test. Fast Pace. Very structural. Funny dude, interesting personality. Can be very picky at times. Lab is alright, just do the prelab.
If you hate Chemistry he'll make you love it with his passion and sense of humor. Fast paced, down to earth, superfunny, you won't know 2 hours have gone. Come to class, take notes and enjoy the ride. This guy will provide you with chemistry knowledge you can use in your everyday life. He's cute too
Mickey is the cutest! I love him!! He is definitely the best teacher I've ever had. He is very helpful and he tries his best to make the lectures as interesting as possible. Word of advice for those of you that need to take chem, take it with Mickey, you won't regret it. If you can deal with homework, then this will be a piece of cake for you!! :0)
chemistry 130.. most likely the beginning of a long assorted string of chemistry classes you will take if you are a science major... anyways.. mickey teaches this class well.. he's clear.. he's hyper.. and most importantly he has a sense of humor that will keep you at least somewhat entertained.. best chem teacher @ occ
THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! HW is easy, quizzes are a breeze, tests will challenge your ability to think FAST. You will know your grade after the midterm :) Like any other class, if you cheat yourself by copying labs/HW, you may not fail this class but you'll get hosed next semester. Micky's worth cloning. He loves sharks, so e-mail him pics.
Mickey is awesome! Hes tough, but for ur own good. Each lecture is a blast, he finds ways 2 relate concepts 2 stuff we actually understand. Who knew CHEM could be so interesting!? his goal is for u 2 learn, understand, and enjoy! Hard work pays off, no matter the grade bc u will know the material like the back of ur hand, and be so proud of urself!
Was a great teacher...especially if he could my interest for hours at 7 am!!! LOL Was very entertaining and made class fun. PS-want to score "brownie pts" then bring him Mountain Dew!
best teacher ever! made class fun and interesting. he was helpful and very clear about everything.
He is the reason I'm a chemistry major. I LOVED him and his passion. It is truly contagious. He's the funniest guy at OCC even though McClure thinks he is =) I wish he would have taught 180. His class was a cakewalk though. What you see in lecture is what you get on the exams...no surprises!
AWESOME teacher! Hyped up every morning on Mountain Dew. Very funny! Teaches great so that you understand and are interested in it. His labs he tells fun stories about blowing stuff up. If only he taught 180 I would take it.
If there is one thing you have to do b4 you die: take his class. He is the greatest teacher I have ever had. If only he teaches me every other chemistry classes, and if only every other teacher is just as awesome as him. I love him.
He is a great teacher. he gives out a lot of homework, but it helps you on the quizzes. midterm/final are hard. He is very helpful and makes the class easy. you will never be bored in there
makes chemistry and science fun, his lectures are entertaining, informative even though he moevs along fast so youcna't miss a class or be late; his labs are tough, and his midterm and final is very hard; he is accessible and helpful.
he is so funny and so smart, he really knows what he is teaching. best teacher i've ever had!
I'm not a science person and I really liked this class. He makes it easy to understand and uses examples to help clarify.. Tells alot of funny stories and is a great professor...
Great teacher, very easy to understand and full of energy. Labs are difficult and fast paced, final and midterm incorporate every detail so study hard.
He makes Chemistry a truely fascinating subject. Class is challenging and time-consuming, but very entertaining and informative.
he makes chemistry fun! and puts it in a way that you can understand the class better. make sure you go to class and copy all the notes and study hard. afterall, it is chemistry. best chemistry there is!
Cool instructor, gives memorable and hillarious examples. Has a really dynamic and energetic teaching approach which makes the class interesting. Gives good advice on how to study. He was also really devoted to using up every single second of lecture to teach chem, literally. Never ended earlier than 11:00:00AM, which was a good thing.
the best chem teacher ever. it wasn't the easiest class but he taught it soo well and if u put some effort to do the hw and take good notes you will really learn a lot. do ur homework that'll help you do well on quizzes and tests. be there everyday you should be fine. GREAT TEAChER THOUGH!!! VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
I wished he taught other chem classes than chem130. He is one of the best professors I have had the pleausure of having as my teacher. He cares about students learning the material and he is really good at explaining chem material. TAKE THIS TEACHER, HE IS THE BEST!!
that you say, i wish Dr Laux teaches other classes besides 130. It would make chem very very fun and interesting. BEST TEACHER EVER. Makes chem fun and interesting. I would take him over why Chem teacher. He is the best I tell you! Test is base on HW and notes! He curves your grades too. Duno if that will help or what? Anyhow, take him!
Prof Laux will make you enjoy chemistry and stay interested throughout the semester. He is full of energy during his lectures and will keep you awake and taking notes. His quizzes aren't difficult if you keep up with the homework. For the midterm/final i recommend reading the textbook. i highly recommend taking him.
This guy is crazy!! He's in his 20's I think. He makes analogy that makes you remember hard materials in the class. Tips for getting an A. DO the hw, get help from office hour, do accurately in lab with all the work show. This class has total of 1000 point and 20 point extra credit for being all the time in class and doing all the assingment.
take this class.
chem 130 in the summer is fast pace, ok given. What i didn't like about "Dr" Laux is that he starts out easy and then quickly turns on the hard level knob with out warning. He's always high of his energy drinks and hates it when students pay more mind to the 120 dollar book than him when his lecturing.
It's because you didn't study.
One of the best teachers at OCC. Knows what students need. Makes class soo interesting and understandable! Very funny, patient, and helpful. Lots of energy! Go to office hours! Worked my butt off in this class. His positive outlook on life is very apparent. But, swears too much and uses God's name in vain. Take him! It will prepare you for 180.
Trust me when i say this...Freakin awesome professor. I had this class in the morning and i would wake up to go everyday cuz the guy is hilarious. Easy class to get an A in but he always scares u about 180. Best teacher at OCC TAKE HIM
The best Chem teacher I've ever had. His class is not easy and you do have to do work but he makes it fun, exciting and interesting. It also helps that he is the "Master of Bad Analogies." Not only will you enjoy his class, but you might actually find yourself talking about chem outside of his class.
AWESOME-O. Couldn't structure a chem class bettter. Very clear, concise, and extremely helpful. Any question, problem he is very available and more than happy to help. Keeps things interesting and gives you hope :)
He one of the best teachers here at OCC. He is funny. I usually hate the crap out of chem and he made it so easy and fun. I actually did not fall asleep in his class. He is Awsome. I love Mickey.
Truely entertaining class, except his lab. He's very tricky & strict on his quizzes/midterm (actually everything). If this your first college chem class, DO NOT take him, otherwise bring some popcorn and enjoy the show. Treat your HW like your exam (some worth even more than quiz) His lectures go 70mph. "Any one who fall behind will be left behind"
Best Chemistry teacher I've ever seen. He makes everyday interesting and fun. He makes things easy to understand and remember. Very funny, very clear, and very honest. If at all possible, get him for chem.
Most unique teacher i've ever had, he's amazingly entertaining, spunk of energy that i've never seen in a teacher. He makes chem. as fun as it can possibly be. Is quite picky in lab and test, but is more than willing to help, take his class though you wont regret it.
I agree with the good comments... BUT, chem gets harder as you move on and I don't recommend any General chem at OCC, he's the only good teacher they have but teaches the basic course. I would like to see him step it up, though he once told me that there's not enough time in a semester to "REALLY" learn chem. Don't feel bad, its a lose lose in chem
Good teacher. It was the first chemistry class I had ever taken and even though I got lost a couple times, I went to his office hours. Even though he was on the computer a lot he managed to help, and if he was too busy were other students who could. Funny guy. Do the homework and show up to everything.
really cool, really nice teacher. writes stuff a mile a minute, so its hard to catch up in lecture, but hes more than willing to help you out. his midterm is hard, but what chemistry class is easy?
I would definitly take this class. Pretty hard and very fast pace. DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND STUDY! No joke, if you don't do those and you know you are going to procrastinate... you'll do bad. Labs are okay, partners help a lot! Good Luck!
This guy is the coolest chem teacher ever. i'm taking him next semester for chem 180. Great teacher, and he grades on a curve, so don't be scared. He's really funny and you'll hardly get bored in the class. I highly recommend him if you want to take chem, there's no better teacher out there, and you'll learn some very cool stuff. Very helpful
Laux is so much fun. Got a D in chem B4 now i have a B big deal since i hate chem .BE ON TIME,DO ALL HW at least turn some of every HW in to get EC at the end of semester, you'll need it because you will NOT finish midterm or final unless you're super smart. Don't break anything in lab to stay on his good side.watch out for SIG FIGS,he's a stickler
Definitely one of the best teachers I've encountered at OCC. He's tough but fair: a stickler for punctuality and organization, but rewards intelligence and effort. EXTREMELY helpful: don't pass up his office hours, they're invaluable. He'll open a vein for you if you do the same. If he's teaching the class you need, consider yourself lucky.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED HIM!!!! HE ROCKS AND WE ALL KNOW IT. TOOK CHEM BEFORE AND GOT A D AND TOOK HIM THIS SPRING AND GOT A B AND I CAME OUT KNOWING SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH MORE THAN I DID LAST SEMESTER. HE REALLY CARES ABOUT YOU AND WANTS YOU TO SUCCEED. COME TO CLASS EVERY DAY AND TAKE GOOD NOTES =)
He's super. His lectures are fun and easy to understand. Quizzes are easy but Midterm and Final are ****** long. Take him, There is no other cooler teacher for you to choose.
he rules. he makes chem intresting and fun and relatable.I love him.
I took Mickey back in 02' and got a B. He was the best chemistry teach ever! Crystal-clear on his explanations. I had to retake chem130 with him cuz' i was struggling with Mucciaro's styling style. Mucciaro was nice, but he was not as good a teacher as Mickey. I highly recommend him.
One of the best teachers ive ever had. Makes sumthin hard like chemistry easy to learn with thorough explanations, plus an awesum sense of humor along with hilarious jokes and stories. Highly recommended!!!! dont take anyone else, ull regret it!
He is da Man...He is the best teacher I've ever had in my life!!! He gives all students chances to earn fair A's in his class. Just do your homeworks and study every quiz to get A. And write all the notes in the lecture and you'll do great in midterm and final. You have to take his class if you consider taking CHEM in OCC.
DO NOT take Laux. He's funny and he tries to teach, but he makes the simplest things so confusing. He makes you work for every single point in the class, and worst of all you don't learn anything. I have no idea how he earned a good rating, but I've heard he's gotten harder this semester compared to others..who knows
challenging class... great professor.
Most of the learning is done through homework, then lab calculations. His lectures are basically from the book. Uses a lot of analogies to convey chemistry. Speaks loudly, clearly, and sometimes off-topic. Not demeaning, sometimes funny.. Class is simple, homework problems (calculations), 1-2 quizzes per week. Two tests per semester.
Dr Laux is a tough SOB! The man has an endless supply of energy. They don't call him A.D.D. boy cuz he's good at math. No easy A here ladies! Put in the time, do the work, haul ass on the midterm and final because they are freakishly long. But don't forget to savor it becuase this is probally the BEST DAMN teacher you'll ever have!
Doc Laux is THE man. Take him if you have the chance and you won't regret it. You'll learn so much from this man. Quizzes are based on notes and some questions are from the book. Haul ass on midterm and final. Does his best to help you. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OFFICE HOURS. Highly recommended if you want to learn some good chemistry!
Also for Chem 185. For people who rate him hard its prolly coz they are lazy. He is the most amazing teacher ever!!! Of course you have to work hard- but its not impossible or anything. If you do your hw, do decent on the quizzes labs its easy to get an A. You would fall in love with chemistry after taking his class.
Great teacher, had him for both 180&185. All questions on midterm, quizzes, and final are straight forward, but VERY LONG. most don't finish. I got an A in this class. very awesome guy. highly recommend. BEST CHEM TEACHER AT OCC. take him!
Had him for 180 & 185.Dr. Laux rewards hard work. Don't forget it.His classes are easily equivalent to 2 normal classes so beware.Very time-consuming but worth it.Just put in the time and have self-discipline.He WILL notice it.He can be a bit abrasive in lab so have thick skin and don't ask him for help every two minutes.Go to his office hours.
took him during the summer and it went really fast. do not miss class or else you are planning to drop or fall behind. he is a hard grader. abuse his office hours. he really wants us to learn. got an A in the class and i worked my butt off. by the way, dont take another class during the summer if you're planning to take this class. thanks laux!
I took Dr. Laux for summer 08 and although he was tough and expected you to know your stuff, he really was a great professor and made himself available for extra questions. Make sure to study hard b/c labs can be tricky and tests cover a lot of material. Overall, if you put YOUR time and effort in, you will see a positive result in the end. :)
Dr. Laux is a really great professor. He expects a lot from you but if you just work hard, do all the homework and study the notes you can definitely get an A.
u should just take chemistry for semester to get an a.a lot of work.b is easy but for a its too hard
Great teacher FUN lectures keeps you from falling asleep. Do the homework and quizzes are a breeze, pretty easy if you do the homework and go to him if you have any questions I'm a non chem major and got an A
Just finished this class and it was challenging, but I learned a lot. I hate going to lectures but his was interesting. My lab class was the BEST!!! Laux is VERY helpful when you need him. And we had the GREATEST T.A. KELLY!!!! Planning on taking him again for chem. 185!
Dr. Laux is a very nice and fun teacher, his lectures have alot of information but that really helps when it comes to doing homework and taking quizzes and tests because most of the things he lectures are exactly what we need to know. Attendance is important.
HARD PROFESSOR. Loveable and funny, but very DEMANDING. Teaches like a 10 unit course. LABS are a nightmare!! Must go at lightening speed on all labs or you will not finish or fall behind by end of semester. Biggest advice-GO SUPER SONIC FAST in lab & be super precise or you'll have to do your experiments over. Lab is were you can lose MAJOR pts!
I thought this teacher was going to be fun, easy & everything else people said about him. It was the opposite. Very nice guy but hard grading. I would not slack off in this class. Many do not finish the final. Many do not finish lab. This guy is out of his mind. He needs to kick back. I am an honor student & was disappointed in this class.
THE BEST PROFESSOR AT OCC! THIS MAN IS AMAZING! HE KNOWS HIS STUFF AND IS SOOOO HELPFUL IF YOU NEED IT. TOTALLY LAID BACK AND SO FUNNY. MAKES HIS LECTURES AS INTERESTING AS CHEM WILL EVER GET. A LOT OF HW AND ALMOST A QUIZ EVERY WEEK BUT IT DEF PAYS OFF! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
FREAKING AWESOME TEACHER. HE IS HARD BUT HE KNOWS HIS MATERIAL AND WON'T LEAVE YOU CONFUSED. VERY EASY GOING ACTUALLY YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW HIM. FOR A SUBJECT LIKE CHEM, THERE IS NO OTHER PERSON THAT COULD TEACH IT BETTER OR MORE INTERESTINGLY THAN LAUX AOOOOOOOOOWW!
This is honestly the best teacher I have ever had. He has a completely effective style of teaching. Rather than just reciting a powerpoint slide, he takes you through every step of every equation and is incredibly helpful in his office hours. He has a great personality and is very approachable. I look forward to my 5 straight hours of chemistry.
Dr. Laux is an amazing teacher. he gives extra credit if you show up to class everyday and turn in all your hw. if you dont turn in your hw you are screwed! each hw you dont turn in is like 1% of your grade so you better turn it all in. decent score on the quizes, exams, and labs will get you an A with all the hw
Laux is an amazing prof. He keeps you interested, explains very well, and constantly uses analogies to help visualize chemical reactions. He does offer lots of hw and quizzes, but they help prepare you for the midterm. If you attend class, do all your hw, study for your quizzes, and do all your labs, this class should be fun and enlightening.
Laux is amazing, no doubt! Passionate, helpful, funny, and extremely knowledgeable. I wouldn't trade him for anything. But... the 5 units thing is a LIE. If I were to very honestly estimate the load of this class, i would say it's more like 7 or 8 units. To do the hw and really understand this stuff take A LOT of time!! Plan ur sched accordingly!
Probably the best science teacher I've ever had. He's the Richard Feynman of Chemistry. Excellent professor! Good class, easy A+ as long as you study.
Dr. Laux is fun and exciting but he is also difficult and strict and demanding. He designed his midterm/final so that people cannot finish them. Very long and confusing. When under pressure it can be very confusing. He is very strict with labs. I typically set the curve any class but his.
I had him for Chem 130 to Chem 185. All I can say is.. HE IS AHH-MAA-ZING.. AWESOME Chem teacher. He would help u if u have any questions. You can always e-mail him if u need to do more practice problems. Midterm n Final r lil difficult but if u study then there is nothing to worry about. He made me love Chemistry n I am now Chemistry major. ^^..
Great proff. No question about it. just study and you'll get the grade you deserve.
Dr. Laux is an amazing, one-of-a-kind teacher. His knowledge and passion for the subject shows in his willingness to help anyone and everyone as much as possible. He's also a very gifted comedian and keeps everyone entertained. Take him if you have the chance. Chemistry requires practice and if your willing to do that you should fair fine.
Dr Laux is a great teacher. He goes above and beyond for his students. His class was challenging for me. The key to be successful in his class is to do well on the quizzes, use them to study for the midterm and final. also do not underestimate the midterm and final. they make and break your grade, and will be difficult if your not prepared.
HE's the best teacher in occ!
Dr.Laux is a very good techer. He is healpful, fun, and smart. I like to sttend his class and his lab. His lab are fun BUT I got D coz of two main reasons. One, I didn't do eight of the hw, regret it! Two, I didn't pace myself well in tests. do your hw and pace yourself, You will do fine. I recommend him!
Laux is amazing! His class is based on one final and one midterm for the most part. There is homework, labs, and quizzes that contribute. To do well, do the homework and study for the quizzes. The quizzes will help you for the midterm and final. If you don't understand something, go to his office hours, he's very helpful!
Just like in the ratings of other profs, Laux is rated highly just because people find him entertaining. I found it kind of distracting. Personal interaction with him didn't feel genuine. It's like talking to an actor. He doesn't treat everyone on the same fair basis.
This is the hardest chem class yet in terms of material. Lab work was difficult, esp since there was no TA to help. It was a two-part final, but the second one was optional. Do the hw and practice his quizzes and you'll do well. It is difficult to finish any exam or get all the points on quiz/test questions. He's picky on Sig Figs!
He is the best teacher in OCC I've ever met. He is extremely helpful when you have a question. This time, second part of the final was optional, but I don't think he always do that. QUIZ is the most important in the class. AWESOME CLASS.
Dr Laux is one of the best professors you will ever have in your college career. He is uniquely gifted in his approach of teaching students difficult material. He has tons of energy and you will see it in lecture and lab. If you have a question go to his office hours and he will help you until you understand the material. Amazing professor, A+
He is nice helpful and super hot! LOL You can get an A only if you do your work, which takes several hours but worth doing it for the exams! Love him!
BEST, MOST ENTHUSIASTIC, FUNNY, CLEAR AMAZING TEACHER IN THE WORLD. HE DESERVES AN AWARD <3 LOVE HIM u cant get mad at him if the material is hard for you. its hard for me too but thats my fault. he is amazing amazing amazing i love love love him
honestly, the ratings i gave is the truth. this class is HARD. no matter who you take so thats a given. Laux loves his job and breaks it down so nicely but you HAVE to put in a lot of effort to do well in this class. HES SO FUNNY AND AMAZING TEACHER. TAKE HIM. especially if you hate chemistry then he will make you like it!
AMAZING TEACHER! Has a PASSION for Chemistry. By no means is this an easy class but if you put in the effort you will do well!! I hated chemistry going into this class and now I am loving it! Hands down one of THE BEST teachers I've ever had. He explains things in a way that makes them understandable. And he's hilarious. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
one of the BEST professors I've ever had. Granted, this is no way an easy class. even though his lecture is very clear n straightforward, you have to put into a decent amount of effort in this class, majority of points are lost from labs (very stressful) and 2 freaking long exams (many do not finish them). highly recommend for bio and chem majors
He is the best teacher I've ever had! He is extremely energetic in lecture, which makes the class so much more interesting. His class is the only class that I enjoy going to. He has lots of time for office hours so he can help you out one on one if you need it. The class is really easy if you do the homework, go to lecture, and use his resources.
i thought that i lost in my interest in chem for good during high school years. i met dr laux and everything changed. unbelievable teacher. inspirational at time. the class is no easy task, but as long as you do the work, u get the grade. I got a A due to hard work n dedication. it would be so nice if he taught chem 185 during the summer!!!!
Laux is the best professor I've seen at OCC...cares about the student a lot, very nice and super HOT...love him so much.
Laux is amazing! Had little to no liking of chem before this class and now it's become my minor for my degree because of him. Extremely helpful, you have to do all the work and give 150% and you'll get a good grade. would definately recommend if you want to have fun and learn a ton and not be bored! He keeps you on your toes!
I absolutely HATED chemistry. Once I got into both the lecture and lab for Laux though my view changed. He is SUPER funny, makes the lectures interesting, gives lots of info, helps in lab if you are struggling, and he takes his time to teach one on one if you need it. He's pretty hard at grading and tests but DEFINITELY take him!!
Never will I forget the mass of Oxygen. 15.9994. You will not be bored. It's almost impossible with Mickey. BUT be sure to practice the problems and time yourself. It's going to be hard finishing his exams.
He will make you bust your ass to do good in his class, but you will appreciate every moment of it. He will give you all the tools you need to get an A in his class but at the end of the day, it all comes down to the work you put in. His passion for chemistry is contagious and his lectures are interesting 90 percent of the time. TAKE LAUX
Laux is loud, obnoxious and mostly just talks about himself. I learned more when I switched into another class. His exams are passed by only a fraction of the class and cover things like the correct spelling of the German scientist's name who came up with an equation that you will not be using in this class. I preferred to learn what mattered.
he is so unclear. his tests are so hard. he doesn't make me want to learn about chemistry which totally concludes that he doesn't passionately love it. His lec. slides are vague. He doesn't know how to explain it. he talks too much. Don't take him. I wouldn't suggest doing so! Not only that. His lab sucks big time.
Dr. Laux, I believe, is the most difficult professor I have ever had since being a student in OCC. He is extremely "picky" when grading labs as well as HWs. You definitely don't get full 10% on the HW section! If you want a "peaceful" life when studying Chemistry, please don't take him!For those of you who prefer facing challenges, go ahead!
Laux is one of the best professors I've met. He is certainly hard, but it does make you thrive! He makes you form good habits that not only help for his class but in life out there too. He makes his lectures completely from scratch and solves random exercises in real time, which shows he really knows his stuff! Cant tell my full name in order though
Yes, it's true that professor Laux is tough but I appreciate him so much more because of it. Rewrite his notes, redo the problems he does in class, work on the practice quizzes, and you will be fine! One thing he has taught me is that Chem is all about the TIME and effort you put into it. He made Chem extremely interesting and I thank him for that.
Dr. Laux is a fantastic professor. Clear, interesting lectures. He's stickler for grading, but is fair at the end of the day. Do his homework and attend lectures because it will help a lot. His practice quizzes are essential to study for tests. Bottom line is he's a great teacher and a chemistry dork which makes it a fascinating (not easy) class.
Dr. Laux is an amazing teacher! Full of energy and is a very entertaining and a funny guy. Tends to go off on tangents but his stories are hilarious. He is strict on how he wants things done, but is extremely helpful. As long as you do the homework and pay attention you can get the grade you want. Highly Recommended!
He's a tough grader. What he covers in lecture is helpful, but not enough to do the really hard homework problems. I find myself struggling with the homework and looking up answers online. He's a great teacher, not boring at all!! He's super funny and full of energy, yet serious when he grades your work. I'd rather just find an easier chem teacher!
I took Dr. Laux for chem 130 during the summer intersession and it was a great idea. I was well prepared for chem 180 and answered every single question I asked. He's got a giant personality. Don't take if you are missing a sense of humor. Very hard class but absolutely doable. Gives EC for 100% attendance and turning in every homework assignment
Dr. Laux is an amazing guy, love the dude to death. He's a fun teacher but is also a genius and a great teacher. Willing to help you with anything, but will make you work for that A. There are 3 big tests and 6 short quizzes. Honestly, I would come back and TA for him if i can in a couple of years. Best Chem teacher at OCC. Will prepare u for life.
I was nervous about taking this class with Laux, but I'm so glad I did! His lectures are usually pretty interesting considering that he's hilarious and good looking lol. He's not that picky about grading as everyone says, he just wants the work done right. I would definitelty take his lab too. He's a really cool guy once you get to know him!
BEST CHEM INSTRUCTOR EVER!!! TAKE HIM!!!
Dr Laux is awesome, yet very hard. He has 3 tests and no final. His lectures are great and and he easily keeps you entertained and engaged. He'll make you work for an "A". He is very fair but the rigor of this course is demanding. I would highly recommend him, he is very passionate about his subject and you will take a lot away from his class.
Dr. Laux is beyond amazing. I went from not really liking Chemistry in 130 to absolutely loving it... all because of Dr. Laux. The man is phenomenal. He's brilliant, hilarious, and... gorgeous. Very engaging and passionate. Very willing to help you pass. I got a 94% . The guy is the best. Do yourself a favor and TAKE HIM!!!!
Oh Laux Laux Laux!! I can't forget this name. I've had so many professors but this one was really different than all the others and I don't think anyone would be as cool, fun, and great as he was. His lectures were the best!!! Do the homework, follow up with his notes and PowerPoint slides and you'll be fine. His exams are not hard but hell long!
His lessons are super easy to understand since he goes over the examples step-by-step and let you follow the work he does. As long as you pay in attention in class, do a little reading off the book, and have the homework done in time, the A is yours. Oh, and also, SIGNIFICANT FIGURES. GET THEM RIGHT. Laux is very nit-picky about that!
I was really disappointed when I took Dr. Laux because I had heard how much of a vibrant instructor he was. I think the fact that he makes exams and lab grading so difficult it really scares off students and makes them discouraged. If he toned it down a notch and graded a bit more realistically, his classlab would be more tolerable.
Dr. Laux is that rare unicorn of a professor that completely inspires you but also forces you to develop a strong work ethic because of the sheer amount of work (suffering) that you need to do in order to get an A in his class. You will never see him play favorites because he bends over backwards for everyone and I really respect him for that.
This is my best class yet. His lectures are very interesting and he is very detailed in explaining. Tests are long and not on the easy side so study hard. He is also very helpful during lab, but his grading will make you go crazy. CAREFUL WITH SIGNIFICANT FIGURES!!! He is very picky with that.
Best chem teacher ever! Wish he taught chem 185. There are 3 exams and no cumulative final, but there are quizzes. Study and do hw problems assigned. An A is possible. Pay attention to sig figs. Some extra cred in the end if you have time to do it. Love his funny stories. Rarely used the textbook.
Really great professor. He cares, makes the material accessible, and lectures in a clear but also funny way. Everyone complains that his exams are too long, but I am at UCSD for ChemE now and I'm so grateful I have the experience of Laux's class under my belt because that's how it is here! Not an easy A, but he prepares us well.
Expect lots of homework. If you love chemistry this is the guy to take. Best professor ever. Humor for days, chemistry comes alive with this guy. Nobody like him at OCC. Taking chem 180 with him and I'm enjoying the fruits of my labor. Cool dude all around.
I'm at UCSD now and I'm so thankful I had Dr. Laux for Chem 180. This guy really prepares you for when you move on from OCC!
Dr. Laux is an awesome Professor. He is tough but if you like the subject, do the hw, and study for the test you will do just fine. Makes the class really fun with non-stop humor, and personal stories. Lab is a blast with him and really pushes you to apply your knowledge. If CHEM180 is a requirement for you definitely take it with Laux.
Dr. Laux is an amazing professor and mentor all around. People say his classes are difficult, but if you're planning to transfer to a 4-year university, esp UCLA, don't expect classes are going to be any easier. He gives hw problems that reflect what's going to be on the test which is godsend. Just don't be lazy. Practice those probs.
Do the hw and you'll get an A. There are 3 exams. No cumulative final. He curves the class based on the highest grade. His exams are almost exaclty like the hw. ALL hw solutions are provided by him!!! His lab is a bit difficult. He is very exact and nitpicky about sigfigs. Very energetic guy.
If you want to learn to be a good student, take his class. He is a phenomenal teacher. I hated him so much in lab sometimes but when the test comes around I would be thanking god he's my teacher. I will never forget the mass of Oxygen. Hardest class but so rewarding. Class average: C. Be prepared to work hard for your A. I sure did.
Contrary to what some people believe; Laux is a funny guy, he is a peculiar because he cares about his students and tries really hard at making people feel comfortable. He is far from annoying, if he annoys you is because you lack sense of humor. He does have some defects but what professor doesn't. Be prepared to learn if that's your thing.
He is a smart man but the class is extremely hard. It is harder than it needs to be because he is very picky about irrelevant small things. He's extremely annoying and thinks he's funny, it's just an act to make up for how hard the class is and how bad of a teacher her really is. He teaches you things you will never use again.
Not recommended. I don't know how he got a high rate.
He is a nice teacher and the lecture is amazing. However the class is really tough and you will not get good grade if you don't spend a lot of time on it. I may not recommend people take his class while taking any other science class. It is a 1000pt class and he only give 20 extra credits for finishing all his hw and attending every class on time.
Dr. Laux is a really fun & energetic guy w/ entertaining lectures. That said his exams are probably one of the hardest things I've ever taken. The material itself isn't hard, its mainly 130 stuff, but the amount of questions on the exam for the time he gives you to take it is unreal. 90% don't finish b/c times up, you really need to know ur stuff.
He's the funniest professor at OCC, but if you need to get an A, then I don't recommend this class. I think I finished all the problems on 1/4 of the midterms he gave us. The exams are more focused on performance in pressure, and ability to spit out as much memorized info as possible as quick as possible. Very difficult, take someone else if u can
One thing I can promise for his class is there won't be any circumstance you will fall asleep in lectures. Exams are very, very time- compressed but if you do all the homework, practice exams he gave and review lecture notes again and again, it is easy to get A.
Laux is prob the best teacher to take for 180 and 185 compared to the rest but he's not as great as the reviews make him seem. Yes he makes things as interesting as possible & is funny but the exams themselves are just too brutal. Study hard if you want an A; I tried & barely got a B. Ppl will prob dislike this review but it is the truth about him
Laux is one of the most inspirational professors you will have during your college career. He explains the material very well. Yes exams are brutal, but being a STEM major is tough so get used to it (i.e. study like you've never studied before and then some). I struggled, but his class was such a rewarding experience. Follow the study tips below!
I took his summer 180 class, and although it moved fast, he gives lot of resources to help you stay afloat. 8 quizzes, lowest score dropped, 3 tests. He gives credit for all work shown, if its correct, even if the overall answer is incorrect. His lectures are amazing, hes hilarious and cares about you. Dont slack off, and youll pass.
He's pretty funny and gives awesome lectures, but often rambles and that hold you back because he will rush in the end and cram things for the last exam. He's an okay grader, but I believe he grades harshly on the "easy" exam. His exams are stupid, made so you won't finish or will do bad if you finish. Liked him as a person, not as a teacher.
Great guy, hilarious. If you can just go to his lecture and observe, go because its so much fun to go to class. But the truth is getting an A is very difficult. The exams are timed, and its mission impossible trying to finish them. If you do bad on two exams then your A is pretty much gone. B isn't easy to get either, Im a hard worker and got a C
Laux is a real gem & I actually enjoyed going to lecture and chemistry in general. He's a wonderful professor who offers every resource for you to pass & succeed. His exams are worth a lot and your grade mostly depend on those four tests.
Do the hw he gives, study the quiz answer keys, and attend lecture to guarantee a solid B. Make sure you practice the hw questions over and over again and redo the quizzes. Pay attention in lecture to understand concepts and take notes. He does offer a max of 30 points extra credit.
I dropped. BUT. This is not at fault due to him being a bad teacher but because I honestly didnt try as much as I should have. I would say you need to commit atleast 10 hours a week outside class to do well. This is a really tough class. I must say, Laux definitely tries on his end though. He makes Powerpoints, HW, and practice tests w/ answers.
Talks more about self than course. Told me that school isn't for everyone. Prides self on students not being able to finish exams.
Take his class if you can. His lecture is terrific and easy to understand. His tests are super straightforward; however, they are just impossibly long, so remember doing homework as much as you can. Don't forget his ppt, quizzes, and outline. Btw, he is so generous with partial credits; he even tells what you should do to maximize your grade.
The best professor for Chem that you can take. Very good at explaining concepts, and very accessible outside of class during office hours. A LOT of extra credit opportunities, but he will NOT round grades. Tests are very straight forward but time restrained. If you do all your hw, practice tests, and redo quizzes, this class should be easy to get A
Took Dr. Laux during the Summer. By far, the best science professor I had so far. If you come to class, take notes, and do the homework, this class can be easily passed. Clearly states his expectations of you from the beginning.
GREAT lecturer and explains very clearly. However, his class was the hardest I ever worked for an A. He makes you bust your ass for it. He is very picky about certain things, covers scientists names on exams is my only complaint. Overall, take him if your ready to work hard. completely inspiring but makes you work for it. i sure did. 10 hours min
Great prof but you better do the hw or the exam will be a problem.
The class is pretty tough (for an A). But, in if you keep up with the homeworks and pay attention in class you'll be good. The HW isn't worthpoints but you need do it to be able to pass the test. His tests aren't necessarily hard, but very limited on time. He's a great guy, got some great stories, really cares for his students, knows the material.
Dr. Laux is an amazing chemistry professor. You really learn a lot from the guy. I think what makes his class insanely hard is that his exams are nearly impossible to finish. This is not an exaggeration. Even when you study for hours and hours it still doesn't guarantee you'll finish his exams (most people don't). Please don't take this lightly
I took Dr laux for chem 180 and 185. Being a chemistry major, I am so sad I dont get to take him again. He lectures amazing, you learn so much from him, he inspires you. He expects you to work your ass off, dont listen to people who say his exams are impossible. If you study hard, youll be able to finish them. I got As in both his classes!
His class was fun both irl and online. He made being online fun and I would take him again! His lectures were easy to watch and its split up into topics, so you are able to watch them whenever and at your own pace. As long as youre caught up and have been practicing the hw by test day youre good! Its not an easy A but its doable, 185 is cool:)
Passionate about what he teaches and makes things pretty clear if you go to lecture, he is also a huge joker and is pretty fun so lectures are enjoyable. Quizzes and exams are okay if you make sure to study but you NEED to study. HW for that class is graded but is essential to passing.
He grades by lab packets(300 pts), 3 exams(200 pts each), and best 5 quizzes out of 6(20 pts each). He gives 10 extra credit pts for homework(need to be submitted at the end of the semester). He also gives 10 extra credit pts for a perfect attendance. He is energetic, caring, understandable, and funny. He has great teaching skills, so take him!
Very energetic. This helps a lot. Clear criteria. Organized online notes and videos. Acessible during lab. Do not get distracted when he lectures online. Every lab session is like a study group, which helps.
I took this professor for chemistry 180 and 185 and I got a solid A in 180 and a high B in 185 so I know this professor pretty well. He is by far one of the best professors out there, coming from UCI here with high energy, great explanations, and a step by step teaching style he really will make sure you know chemistry when you finish the class!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. He is one of the few super smart people who can explain complex topics in a way that actually makes sense. His lectures are interesting, funny, lively, and informative. Take him if you plan to go into a science-heavy field. He will set you up for success! I wish I had him for every class in college.
Very organized and structured professor. You know what things are due and when they're due. Gives you lots of practice (homework) prior to quizzes and exams. Doesn't seem to have patience with struggling students though. Answers homework questions in a passive-aggressive tone and assumes those students aren't trying hard enough.
His test is impossible to finish with 20 questions only 1 hrs, 10 questions with 30 mins quizzes, but one question has 3 or 4 a b c d, depend, that's not really 10 questions, exams too
He's arrogant and condescending, belittles you when you ask a simple question. He'll beat around the bush and never answers yes or no. He failed 20 people on the first exam because he "planted" a question and supposedly those students "Googled" their answers. The homework and labs are always EXTREMELY confusing, your brain will want to explode!
He wants you to do on his way, not from your previous prof, will get 0 if you do the way on chem130. Tough grader, He fails 20 ppl on the first his exam, beware don't read the other fake review, only one person finished his exam, get an A? IMPOSSIBLE
He's rude and belittles you when you ask a question. He has no patience for student who is struggling in class. CEO of giving tons of homework and giving a very short period of time to do your quizzes and test. He is extremely paranoid about people cheating to the point he will do extra measures to catch you or make sure you're not cheating.
One of the most hardworking, dedicated, high energy professors I have ever met PERIOD. His tests are tough, he doesn't spoon feed students, and will make you feel like a fool when asking questions (sometimes berating) BUT he puts in the hours for his students and you can tell he loves teaching. Take him but save him for an easy semester.
Why the low ratings this semester? Tough grader & tests haven't been easy but he cares, wants students to succeed & is available outside of class hours. Gets real pissed when people cheat. Entertaining, understandable lectures that make the material interesting. Enjoyed this class, bummed he's not teaching my next class as I'd def take him again.
If you are serious about chemistry, take this professor because he's an expert in this field. However, this class does take a toll on you because there is so much work associated with this class, but it is worth it. It takes some time for him to warm up to you, so just do your best to try and make a connection with him. Don't be late or skip class!
If youre looking for an easy A then dont take him, but if you are willing to put in the work, he is hands down THE BEST professor. Hes helpful, and his lectures are prerecorded, so you watch them on your own time. During class time you work on homework or practice test, and let him know if you have any questions. Take notes on the lectures!
He wants you to undo every fundamental rule you've learned about Chemistry and learn it 'his' way. Has a very specific criteria you must meet in order to receive full credit. Will start off semester with an inane quiz about lab safety. If you don't pass /miss two questions, you're dropped. Any questions asked will be answered enigmatically. Don't.
Rude for no reason
I honestly do not understand the bad reviews. This post is long overdue. I was a student of his a few semesters back- his CHEM180 was one of the most memorable classroom experiences I've ever had. He actually made a 7AM chemistry class kinda fun.. Yes, it takes some time and effort. But, what STEM class doesn't..
Biggest regret is I couldn't take chem 185 with him. I left his class truly understanding the material. He's happy to work problems in different ways and will explain things differently if you need. One of the best profs I've had.
Dr. Laux, or Coach, is one of the best chemistry professors Ive had so far. Its a flipped classroom so you watch lecture videos at hone and work on homework in class. You can tell he genuinely cares for his students and he puts a lot of effort in the class. If you want an A, youre going to need to work really hard for it, but its worth it!
Took last semester, NEVER again. Has no sympathy for struggling students, assumes theyre not trying hard enough and grades extremely hard. Teaches chemistry the toughest way, nobody else on the planet teaches it his way. You need to throw everything you know in the bin. Extremely paranoid, lacks empathy. Dont let his upbeat personality fool you
Professor Laux is an amazing Professor. He is great at teaching, easy to pay attention to, makes classes fun and interesting (which is hard to do for Chemistry). He is also a very tough Professor and he makes you work hard for a passing grade. I have no regrets taking him though because I left the class with a strong understanding of Gen Chemistry.
His class is tough but you can get an A if you put in the work. His exams are long but fair. If you do the homework and study the practice tests, there will be no surprises on the exam. Theres also a 30 point extra credit opportunity so theres a little wiggle room. The only people that fail are the ones that dont work hard. Overall hes awesome!
I took this class in the summer so everything was condensed into 8 weeks. There are tons of homework and lecture videos. I disliked the labs since they were boring. However, an A is possible as long as you do your homework, study, and practice. Exams are long but fair. He also gives 20 points e.c. Push hard to finish and it will be worth it!
Professor Laux will definitely make you work for your grade. He's tough but hands down the BEST chemistry professor who is incredibly knowledgeable. Unfortunately, he didn't teach 185 so I had to take another professor and let me tell you, it was the most traumatic semester in my life. You will thank and appreciate Professor Laux later, I promise.
Although I will admit he knows what he's doing, there is not an single speck of empathy or understanding towards his students who are struggling outside of school, whatever it may be. Compared to his class, they are all irrelevant. He expects absolute perfection from you, and views them as excuses not worth listening to. I felt insulted by him.
He had no sympathy or compassion for his students who have struggles outside the classroom and comes off as very passive-aggressive whenever I would try to defend my work or talk to him about assignments. Work/lecture load is heavy averages about 2 hours outside of class daily. He believes that his class should be your #1 priority.
I took his class years ago for CHEM 180 and 185. He was the Professor with the best reviews then. Tests are high pressure and designed to not be finished. I transferred to a Uni and I have not experienced this approach to testing. That's y I would not recommend. He is rude if you need help. Yelled at me in lab (and I am a quiet respectful student)
He initially comes off as funny but is really just passive-aggressive. If you don't do it his way, you get marked. He preaches having been a working student with full-time credits but will shame you to drop if you work while taking this class. Lecture videos exceed the amount of time actually scheduled for class and don't help w/lab.
The best professor I have had at OCC so far. He is incredibly passionate about his subject and it shows. This course was difficult but his lecture videos did a fantastic job of explaining the concepts, and they never really got stale because he has a very entertaining personality! If you're taking chemistry, I highly recommend him.
One of the best teacher i've ever had. Always hated chem, but his class was so good I almost switched my major half way through the course. Yea it's very lecture heavy and he has lots of hw and video to do, but coach Laux made it fun and easy to understand. He is funny and caring and one of the few teachers that make me want to go to office hours.
If you want to set yourself up for failure, take his class. I was misled by all the positive reviews. Sure, his lectures are helpful, but only if you have several hours to spare a night. Way too many lectures and he's so nit-picky that you have to watch them. Take this class if you can dedicate all your time to it since that's his expectation.
Talks about himself more than he talks about chemistry. Is always angry and in a bad mood for some reason, and comes across like he hates teaching. Refers to himself in 3rd person constantly and made the whole class uncomfortable daily with unfunny jokes that he laughed hard at himself.
Tests are just like the quizzes and homework, if you understand lecture topics you will be fine
Liked to go off on tangents about subjects that aren't chemistry or science related. Very unorganized class, and unfriendly and unapproachable during office hours. Didn't seem to have much respect for students, was only friendly the first day of class, after that it all went downhill.
Honestly, he's lecturing is very good but the exam is TIME CONSUMING, the homework was too much on it, also the lab was so stressful that can pull your hair out. He's a good guy overall but BEWARE OF EXAM TIME AND HOMEWORK LOAD. Whoever take him, good luck on the exam timing and you'll experiencing with lots of homework
Who is writing the positive reviews?? Laux kills the joy of learning. He goes off on different tangents and makes weird comments. The homework and testing are too much.
A lot of homework. The test load doesn't match the time given to complete them. I think he expects you to dedicate you're entire being to this class. We get it. You're a coach for a baseball team. The tangents make it hard to learn. I recommend just watching the videos and then going to lecture to review the content. He's unprofessional at times.
He is the worst teacher on campus. Taking this class was the biggest mistake of my life. I have never failed a class before, but I failed his. Laux is unsympathetic and cruel. He expects everything you do to be perfect and he is an extremely harsh grader. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Lab grading is very tough. It requires you to pre-read before going to the lab every time or else you will fall behind. He wants you to do calculations "his way" which slowed me down. If you don't do well in the lab, it's going to affect your grades a lot. HWs are su[er long. Tests are okay but you have to be good with time. Nice but tough prof.
Very funny professor. Truly has a passion for chemistry and teaching. His lectures are amazing and very well taught. He gives lots of supplemental materials for you to understand and homework is manageable. He grades very clearly and is very forgiving on the test as long as you have the right idea. He is very vocal and laughs at his jokes a lot.
Dr. Laux is one of the most passionate professors you'll come by. His lectures are engaging and he's always there to help nail down the concepts. Not to sugarcoat it; his class is difficult and heavy on homework and tests. Lab is also stressful due to the amount of work. But, if you apply yourself and dedicate time to learning, then you CAN pass.
He is very quiz and test-oriented, with a quiz every other week and three 5-7 page exams that are expected to be completed in an hour and 20 minutes. He typically assigns homework that is on average 5-11 pages long and they are only worth 5 points. He expects you to dedicate your entire being to his class. Nice guy, but I wouldn't recommend him.
I had a terrible time taking Dr. Laux. I think he needs to improve his teaching. Sometimes, he can be moody and not always wants to help us. I prefer other professors than him.
Hepassionate, smart, respectable, stiff guy. He gives you friendly day-to-day analogy to make the materials more digestable. However, what he teaches is not the main focus for you to get an A in this class. You need to do lots of homework to see his pattern and really understand the materials. HW are hard. SUPPER TOUGH GRADING. Hardest class for me
harsh grader, horrible attitude, horrible lecturing, moody, off-topic, expects everyone to be perfect
Very unforgiving if you do are struggling to understand the material, I was blown off many times when asking for clarification. He is passionate about chemistry, I will give him that, but he does not seem to make time for people who need clarification, he will not meet you halfway. 25% of lectures are CONSTANT tangents that are just confusing.
Do not take this class if you're right outta highschool. Laux is cool and all but I promise you, you will not have a life outside his class. You will constantly be studying and spending a gazillion hours on his homework. His tests and quizzes are actually very hard.
By far the worst professor at OCC. What makes stem courses amazing is the ability for students to be creative in the ways they approach certain applications. Laux inhibits that process since he will hound you to failure if you got a correct answer but use a unique method of solving. Very disrespectful to the diversity of learning. Please avoid him.
His lectures are entertaining and he is a cool dude but his exams are difficult. You need to study a lot if you want to do well. His labs are brutal I nearly cried tbh. If you understand the lecture material you will probably do well in lab but it is still confusing and he can be harsh if you screw up.
he makes the lectures so engaging and easy to follow, he has a YouTube channel if you want to see. unlike other professors I've had he genuinely works hard (he gets like 130 exams graded in 3 days & quizzes graded the day after) and loves his job and you can tell. his exams are difficult (like any chem professor) but he offers so much extra credit
Great professor. He expects a lot, but his lectures are rewarding and he's setting you up for success; whether it's for the next course or the real world. I have a lot of respect for Dr. Laux. I learned a lot from him. Tests are HARD and HW takes up a lot of your time, but I can't say I'd pass his class if I didn't complete all his required HW.
Took him during COVID so it was online, but he was great. Really went out of his way to give us all the support and resources we needed (and was funny while doing it). Only thing is he comes on strong, so beware of personality clash, and when he suspects cheating he might go overboard (happened to a friend of mine, totally wasn't her fault).
Took him for both chem 180 and 185. Great professor. He's funny, cares about students' success, and engages in learning. He always has office hours both online and in person, so just run in if you have any questions on lectures or homework. Exams are similar to hw and quizzes, just a lot of problems within the time limit. So be prepared.
If you like chemistry or plan on using it later, Laux is your guy. He teaches the class like everyone in it is going to be a chemist, which is great if you like chemistry, but his class is quite rigorous otherwise. He is a character, very erratic and energetic. I found it hard to focus at times. Check out his YouTube lectures if you want a demo!
Dr. Laux=best Chem Coach in existence! I hate math but am starting my chem major. He shows us the wonders of the world it works with, is genuinely obsessed with his subject, amazing at teaching because he gets how kids' brains work, and so freaking funny! He's always thrilled by a good question, and finds sincere joy in helping people learn. 10/10!
Laux is a tough professor, but engaging. His lectures are rewarding if you put in the work. The class is challenging, but unstuckstudy AI was a helpful study tool. Overall, it's worth taking if you're up for the challenge.
I got an 89.6, and he still gave me a B. Lab was stressful since he required his signature to continue, but he would leave the lab even though there was a line. Exams were designed to “not be finished.” Hw sometimes had material he didn't teach. If you look something up online, he will berate you for “not using the extensive material he provides.”
probably the best chem professor. This class is hard (all chem is) but he gives EC if you do all hmw& go to all lectures, & curves exams. he relates lecture to his real life making it easier to remember material& does super funny demonstrations
Great lecturer, and grades exams insanely fast so you get feedback right away. Tests are also 100% doable if you do the HW. Only caveat is he is extremely strict during lab, so if you can take him for lec but someone else for lab.
Prof Laux was my lab professor and he was absolutely amazing. Not only does he love what he does, but he cares about his students and wants them to succeed. My lab was a night class and despite the fact that he was on campus from 7am until 7pm, he was full of energy and dad jokes, and always made an effort to make us laugh and make the most of lab.
Dr.Laux is an amazing professor who knows what he is doing. He wants you to learn and isn't going to let you slide if you have a mistake.Lectures are very fun and interesting so you don't really doze off in them. Lab, you need to pace yourself very well, if not you won't finish all of the labs.Exams aren't too bad, study or you won't finish in time.
I LOVE MY CHEM COACH AND SO SAD TO LEAVE. BEST PROF IVE EVER HAD. Always so caring and funny. This is his passion, and he IS SO FUNNY. Do your work obviously! But he will do everything to make sure you are successful. I had him chem 180&185 and I always looked forward to lecture and lab he's the best
dr. laux is easily the best chem professor ever-coming from a person who actually hated chemistry! i only took him for chem185: the difference is astounding; he's very passionate about chemistry and wants his students to succeed. i didn't do the best in lab, but aced all the exams because of his lectures. i wish he taught orgo + everything beyond
A tough grader. He says labs are self-paced. If you are behind, you are cooked! He gives extra credit attendance "favors students" at the end to boost their grades, which is not fair for others who also work so hard! So the smart will pass, but the one who struggles and works hard are left behind. I don't agree that it should be the opposite.
He's genuinely a funny guy who's really passionate about what he does, you can tell from lectures. Make sure to show up to lecture & lab on time each day for 10 points (1%) extra credit, and do all the HW for 10 points (1%) extra credit. For tests, do the practice exams and quizzes but don't spend too much time reviewing HW
He is an amazing guy, hilarious, and have really good lectures. Only 4 weeks, so really fast paced. If you're good at math (& memorization) then this class is not a big deal. 3 major exams, curve based on highest score. 6 quizzes, he will drop the lowest one. He graded pretty strict on lab reports, but easy if follow his instructions. Had many ECs.
Honestly, if you have accommodations that's not extra time for test avoid him. He don't understand circumstances even though he likes to talk about that he does. Also if you're not confident in your English writing he will mark off points based on that. He's funny and passionate but not very understanding of people circumstances.
His lectures were amazing- super long because it was a summer class but he made them very entertaining. His expectations of us in the class were clear which was very helpful when it came to studying. By far the best professor I've ever had in my college career so far.
After taking multiple lab science courses at a 4-year university, this has been the worst class I've taken. The professor frequently belittled and singled me out in class (unprovoked), ignored me in the lab queue causing me to fall behind, and showed zero grace for documented extenuating circumstances. Don't be misled by glowing reviews like I was.
Best professor I ever had! He's hardworking, funny, and really knows his stuff. Focus in class and you'll do great, he grades based on understanding, so even if the answer's wrong, you still get almost full points. Exams and labs are straightforward. My little brother even wants to take him after hearing his Zoom office hours!
Not an easy A class but Laux is a very good teacher. Requires studying for the exams and doing the homework but many study guides are provided. Content is very straightforward and as long as you put some time in you can get a good grade. Is not lenient with outside circumstances so make sure to commit time to this class.
Coach Laux is the best! His 180 class is intense but you will learn so much. When I say intense, I mean a good amount of homework and a high expectation for precision in lab. However, it is very achievable to get an A if you just show up, put in effort, do the homework, take the provided practice tests, and all versions of the quizzes.
He has 3 exams, and I barely had time to finish the last 2. You need a strong score on the 1st exam to secure an A. Extra credit = up to 35 pts if you're never late and finish all HW. Don't be too optimistic if he says the 3rd exam is easy, my class had the lowest avg. He's a great prof, prep you for real life take him if y're willing to learn.
