he's awful, doesn't care if his students succeed. you're just a number in his class. blows off meetings, isn't there for his office hours... avoid this class, the fact there's no lab isn't worth it!
His tests are fair, he is a very knowledgable professor. It takes some time to get use to his personality and teaching style. First impression i didnt like him but after a while you get use to him.
he seems to have a strange way of teaching (i think he wanted to be a stand-up commedian), but you don't notice it after a while. exams are fair and he seems to try and make the class as painless as possible since it's a non-majors class.
He spent a lot of time on the material, but expected you to know it more in depth than he tells you. The tests were more difficult than expected, but not impossible if you study.
I hate science and Mitchell made me hate it even more. You're just a number, not a person. His lectures are so boring and he goes off on these random tangets about space...the class was human bio! The tests are difficult, but he does help you prepare for the essays near the end of the class before the actual test. He's really weird, too.
He's pretty engaging, and makes the subject interesting enough to keep me (a non-science person) awake for the hour and fifteen minutes. He's a fairly fun guy, and I'd recommend this class for getting that science req outta the way.
explains things pretty well.
what can I say? It's a class designed for people who hate science--which is definitely me. Take this if you just want to fulfill the requirement, and he'll make sure you pass.
His tests are much more information then he presents in class, but he usually does give you the essay question ahead of time. He has a strange sense of humor, and he tries to make bio funny and relate it to strange everyday things. It's not worth the non-lab requirement.
every time i see the man i want to say "hello Newman" very strange man. spends a lot of time on some things (mostly chem since he's a bio-chemist) but most of that time is spent in some obscure tangent about doors or water heaters or something. tests focus on chem of body, not over all anatomy and are more in depth than classes.
Boring! (which is extremely painful when class is from 5-6:15 pm) Explains things really simply in class then asks very detailed questions on exams and doesn't let you see your exam paper after it's graded. Also, very irritating to listen to because he emphasizes every biology-related word. In his words, "WHAT THE BLAZZES?"
boring class, you'll try your hardest not to fall asleep but will anyway. very broad discussion in class, but the exams are details. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE BOOK/HANDOUTS he doesnt tell you the short answer question but if u ask him after class he will. not as easy of a class as i thought it would be
Very unclear in his teaching, exams were very hard and unfair.
Terrible, all over the place in lecture. Tests are on his "Lecture Notes" not what he teaches in class. Very unhelpful. Wishes he was a stand up comedian, but not funny. Test format is 80% multiple guess 20% short answer.
Worst Professor Ever!
I wanted to keep an open mind in this class but have to say that it was torture for 15 weeks. Hard to follow lectures, tests were brutal. Not an easy class for science/lab requirement. I should have taken botany and dissected plants or geology and polished rocks
Extremely nice and helpful. I missed two of the exams, and he let me retake both, no questions asked. Explains everything in detail in class, but in a boring manner, which makes it hard to pay attention. The exams were easy. EVERYTHING you need for the exam is online in his notes, which are very detailed, pretty much everything he says in class.
Worst class I have ever taken. His lectures are pointless and don't help on the tests.
This guy is pretty amusing. He tries to be a comedian, and his two most common phrases are, "What the blazes," and "Negative outcome." Other than that, it's a pretty hard class if you're not a science person because your grade is based on 4 exams, which are based on his online notes. What he teaches seems very general, unlike the text book...
Total space case! Hated the class though I love the subject because he didn't know what he was talking about most of the time. Wording on exams was very unclear so that you didn't know what he wanted you to answer. Classes didn't cover exam material, but all you were graded on were the exams. The class killed my GPA with his lack of teaching skills
Definitely gears the class to kids who are just taking the class for the distribution requirement. Puts all the lectures online and the tests really aren't bad at all. VERY helpful if you go to his office hours!
If you go to class and pay attention, the tests are very easy. He makes the class for kids who dont like bio, and he really makes it easy for you. hell answer any questions you have and all the lectures are online
He talks a lot but is true to the lecture notes he puts online. The jokes he says have nothing to do with the lecture, but at least he's trying to keep you awake :)
Honestly, I hate science and bio more than anything, and he really made it easy for me. Sure he's kind of odd, but who doesn't like a professor who is quirky and interesting? Take the class if you don't like bio and need to fill the requirement, also go to his office hours! He's very helpful!
I hate science and biology so I took this class thinking it would be easier for me. It's not. His lecture notes are hard to understand and he trails off in class it gets hard to follow him. He tries to be funny and understands no one wants to be in class. Tests are much harder than expected but he gives you the short answer question before the test
He is...Interesting. Don't even bother going to class, just study the lecture notes online. He runs around the classroom like a crazy person, telling wierd jokes and tangents, and writes one word notes on the board. Nice guy, just not very helpful.
Funny, smart, quirky guy who keeps the lectures entertaining with his enthusiasm and energy. Study the powerpoint slides and you'll do fine on the exams.
very very quirky guy. he acts out processes sometimes...i didnt understand them at all. you can tell he is very smart which can be a problem because he will start talking about more complex stuff that you dont understand. going to class is not needed. read the chapters, follow the powerpoints and do the homework. HARD tests. not an interesting clas
Nice guy, hard class. I didn't really know what I was getting into when I signed up for the class. Lots of information so class is more of an overview and exams cover more stuff. Read the notes and slides online in addition to his lectures and you should do fine.
Good teacher, lectures interesting. Not as clear as he could be, and a lot of the questions on exams aren't from lecture, so be sure to read the textbook and take really detailed notes.
I took this class as a summer course at 8:30am, wasn't looking forward to it but he managed to hold everyone's attention and actually make the topics interesting! Not the easiest tests but if you study the power point notes you'll do fine. One of the best professors I've had at UVM.
Prof. Mitchell definitely knows his stuff, does his best to be funny and clarify the material for the students. However, this class is no cakewalk! The tests were moderately difficult but fair but homework was pretty easy. He makes all of his powerpoints downloadable on the web-- they basically WERE the test material, I barely had to read the book.
TERRIBLE CLASS. Took the 8:30 T/R class, and he literally talked for an hour about things that aren't on the exams, and perhaps the remaining 15 on what would be. For non-science majors who DON'T CARE and are only filling a dist req, definitely not the class to take. He is Terrible. Can't hear him half the time, really annoying voice when you can.
This professor doesn't know how to teach. He talks off topic all class, jumps around trying to be funny. Tests are extremely hard, the only reason I survived this course because I had a nice Lab professor. You gonna hate this course..
One word...FANTASTIC! He is a professor with class. Research from John Hopkins in his bag..but so down to earth and extremely helpful. Although his test are quite hard but if you do the work and pay attention..you will be golden. P.S. His notes on BlackBoard is a book itself and ALL you need!!
He actually is a decent teacher. He knows what he's talking about and how to explain it, but he goes off on irrelevant tangents and mumbles a lot of the time so you miss things. Tests are slightly difficult but not bad if you study a little.
This class is NOT an easy A. You have to either memorize the textbook word for word or already know half the subject material. He doesn't teach to the test at all and when you go to see him for extra help he doesn't help he just shrugs you off. I advise taking this only if ABSOLUTELY necessary.
Professor Mitchel is both intelligent and a good guy which is a surprisingly rare combination. His exams are often considered easy, but I would label it more as clear conveyance of expectations and subject matter. Good professor.
Worst teacher I ever had. I didnt learn a single thing in his lectures. Come exam time, I had to learn all of the chapters completely new by myself in the book.
I really dislike Mitchell's teaching style. He doesn't teach with his textbook, so don't bother buying it. He thankfully writes out notes for each chapter. His powerpoints are good, but some times his exam questions deal with just one slide. He is really entertaining and made me laugh many times. He tries hard, but he isn't the greatest teacher.
Not a fan of Mitchell whatsoever. He banters and swears, fights with the microphone and half the time you can't really hear him. His test questions were hard to understand and most of them pertained to small details. He's smart, but he doesn't know how to teach.
The only way to do well in this course is to essentially memorize every word of his online lecture notes. The class itself is painfully boring and hard to understand- he's hard to hear even with a microphone and he trails off the ends of his sentences. I HIGHLY recommend taking something else. This class is quite a GPA-dropper.
This man is out of his mind. I had to withdraw from this class last spring because it was so hard, and here I am getting bad grades this spring. Not for lack of trying! I still haven't found the trick. Unless these things come easily to you, be prepared to work your ass off. I have to take 255 with him next fall and I'm already dreading it.
Have now had Mitchell for 004, 001, and part of 002. He is pure nuts. Not a bad guy, but just nuts. Makes exams basically directly from slides (on Bb). Hard to describe how nuts this guy is. You'll see.
This guy is the stereotypical absent-minded professor. He spends most of class incomprehensibly muttering "keep it simple stupid" and other odd stories that don't relate to the topic at hand. He is a nice guy, very smart, but should stick to research. I had to teach myself everything in this class.
If you want a good grade in this class, memorize ALL slides and notes! If science is not your thing, you should take this because it is pure memorization. There is never anything on tests that wasn't explicitly stated in the materials he provided. He might be confusing sometimes, but even if you don't go to class, easy A if you memorize the notes.
He tries to be funny, but isn't most of the time. It was easy to fall asleep in that class.
Mitchell is smart but he's a terrible teacher. Class is supposed to be mandatory but only takes attendance one time/semester. Nothing you learn in class is on an exam and you have to learn his notes by heart in order to do well. Not an intro class by any means. He is old, boring, and tries to be funny but isn't. Not easy, avoid this class.
Seems like an easy class at first (its for non-science majors) but he rambles on about pointless examples and personal medical experiences. He teaches about a fifth of what you need to study for the tests (which are then pretty easy if you studied enough). The online lab didn't work right. Avoid if possible unless you really know human bio.
I had to take a science class for a requirement so I chose biology over chemistry. It was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. He doesn't tell you exactly what's going to be on the exams (just a bunch of random info) and 4 exams make up your grade. He also tells you way to many personal stories.
I had to sit in the front of the class because he's a bit of a mumbler, but other than that no complaints. Tests are easy if you study all the slides and lecture notes. Contrary to what others wrote, I like that he tells personal stories. Sometimes it seems like he's oversharing, but that often helps me to remember things later on exams.
Soooo boring. Seems cool at first, but gets very old and boring very quickly. He's plenty nice and super smart, and provides a lot of information, but his tests are quite tricky and the class itself is not easy at all.
Excruciatingly boring. He tries to make it fun, but to me at least he just kinda comes off as being a little nuts. Besides, if I wanted to learn Biology from a fun scientist I'd watch Bill Nye. I'm in this class to learn from a professional, not a bad comedian.
Dr.Mitchell is a great teacher and physiology master. His exams were straight forward and the lab portion was interesting. A lot of material is covered in the course so be proactive and review everyday.
He's an alright teacher. His exams were easier than Johnson or Gilmartin's. His short answers are always directly from the videos he provides on BB. He does not give mercy or partial credit that well, so study your ass off. I would avoid him if you aren't great, keyword great, at science at all costs.
SUPER boring class. The professor mumbles a lot and you can barely hear him even in the front of the classroom. I find myself spacing out all the time and he rambles on about examples that don't usually pertain to the exam at all. Barely used the textbook, just studied his lecture notes. The online lab was usually really easy.
Easy subject, very hard class. He is very disorganized and rambles on about nonsense during class. His online notes are even worst and I constantly found myself spending hours in the library trying to keep up. I spent an absurd amount of time reading his notes and studying for his incredibly broad tests.
Terrible. Attendance graded as an allocated 10% of each unit exam, which he randomly takes once during each unit. The highest grade I could receive on the test is a 90 because I was snowed-in the day he decided to take attendance. Teaches terribly, uses elaborate nonsensical analogies for simple processes, yells, and is redundant. Not a teacher.
This class has potential but is horribly taught. Out of the 4, exams 1 & 2 focused on a manageable amount of material, exam 3 covered easily 10x more material out of nowhere, very detailed info about the Nervous and Endocrine systems. Attendance taken randomly 4x/semester and greatly impacts grade. This lecturer is annoying to listen to. Beware.
Worst professor I have ever had
Very confusing, rambled on about random things not pertinent to the class at all. Tests were hard with irrelevant questions. Online lab was a waste of time and energy.
Get ready to learn on your own. PS, your not really told what your supposed to learn. I worked my ass off an still couldn't get the grade.
Very difficult if you are not a well versed biology or health science major. He does not teach efficiently or effectively.
I can tell that John cares about his students, but he is very hard to understand during lecture. I found it nearly impossible to take notes because he often went on tangents. He is a nice professor and will try to help during office hours if you seek him out. Unfortunately, I would definitely not reccommend this class.
Be prepared to learn everything about molecular and cell biology by yourself. He has manic episodes mid lecture and talks constantly about the royal society. This class will destroy your GPA and material on exams will not be specified. I strongly urge you not to take this class and if you do, well, good luck.
This is one of the worst classes I have ever taken at UVM. This class is supposed to be for non-science majors, and yet is so unbelievably complex it's ridiculous. Going to class is pointless, but due to the (2?!) random attendance checks, you have to go. Mitchell is absolutely insane, not helpful, and tells a gross amount of personal stories.
Dr. Mitchell is an OK lecturer. Definitely peculiar, but the information is delivered. The class was moderately difficult. I would say the hardest part wasn't because of the teacher, but because of how Chem and Bio tests are back to back, so Bio is put off until after the chem exam (in my case usually the night before).
Professor Mitchell is an excellent professor! He makes the class clear and concise, and he is very entertaining. If you are a non-science major this is the class for you! The tests are very fair, all the information being from the lectures, and notes provided on blackboard. Don't get discouraged from the reviews, they are not true. Bio is awesome!
Mitchell's lectures aren't just boring, they're absurd. Besides teaching inaccurate information, he spends half his time rambling about the material (usually in "character" voices), other half on random, unnecessary and confusing tangents. His online notes are nonsensical and not indicative of exam material (which is always completely ambiguous).
Mitchell is a good teacher and you can tell he's really into what he teaches. I had him in a lecture of almost 200 students so most of the time was just him lecturing. As far as lectures go he keeps it interesting and shows passion for the subject. The class doesn't assign a lot of homework so the few exams throughout the course are very important.
Lectures were decent and he adds lots of personal stories. Sometimes goes off on tangents for 20 minutes, but they're often interesting even if they are unrelated to the class. Grade consists of 4 exams (60%), online homework (20%), and lab (20%). If you put in the work you shouldn't have a problem earning an A.
Prof Mitchell is very very very attractive. Its tough to focus during classes because he radiates sexuality and sensuality.
Tests are a lot more specific than what he actually lectures in class. However, he has all of the material on his blackboard site which you need to study for. Essentially you could never go to class and just learn the online notes he has as they are very good. I found the tests very difficult though. Didn't use the textbook, just his notes.
Mitchell is a good guy. He is there for you if you show that you are interested in making a good grade. He always worked around my schedule when I had to meet with him (which is something I suggest anyone who takes his class does). He is GREAT one on one. He highlights what to focus on for exams and is way more specific than he is in class.
Basically Mitchell goes on random rants about everything and doesn't actually teach bio (unless you want to count pathways as having a specific character voice). Your time is better spent studying his BB powerpoints than actually going to class.
what a funny guy
Took Bio1 with Mitchell and in the middle of Bio2. I don't think I learned much biology. His exams are apparently way harder than the other lecturer and class average is about mid 70s, while her average is around mid 80s. He tends to make things really confusing. Lab is super easy and so is the HW, so you only need Bs on the exams to get an A
Lectures can be confusing, as his slides usually contain more info than the textbook. He is pretty engaging, and if you go to class and read the textbook, the tests are very do-able. Very helpful outside of/after class, really helps clarify things if you ask for it.
Mitchell is SO great. Some say Almstead is better for Bio, but she grades much harder and uses her own bizarre language on exams. Mitchell may not be as good of a lecturer as Almstead, but his exams are very fair and he is such a wonderful man that truly cares about his students. He is more than willing to help if you show interest.
Dr. Mitchell grows on you, really he does. Everything that you need to do well is in his slides or online. Go to class, or negative outcome, you'll fail. If you put in the work you'll do fine. His tests are hard, but nothing in them is too difficult.
He was very dull and bad at explaining biology concepts. It was very easy to become distracted and tune him out. I found myself having to learn from the textbook, which impacted my grade.
Would never take this Professor's class again. Unfortunately it was mandatory for my major but the class was difficult and the exams were extremely hard. Do not recommend this class to anyone ever.
Ok. I hate science, but, honestly, he made it fun for me. I loved his "rants" and side stories. His class may be dry, but he CARES about his students. Don't buy the book, memorize the study guide and class notes and you'll be fine.
Truly I could not follow a single thing that he said the entire semester. I love biology and did very well in my BCOR012 class, but Mitchell made BCOR11 horrible. He is dull, a tough grader, and goes on tangents that make no sense. His slides are also poorly organized and so are his thoughts. He's a very nice person, that being said.
Honestly Mitchell has been my favorite professor. I took BCOR 12 and 11 with him. He was very helpful, especially during office hours. He did everything he could to help me find ways to better my test taking and understand the material. I appreciate him more than anything and I truly believe every professor should be as caring and helpful as him.
John is an out going professor and does NOT teach from the textbook. John gives lots of examples in class and is very intelligent. If you don't have a passion for Biology or haven't taken a college level biology class; I wouldn't reccomend taking this class. Lectures are packed full of information you are expected to know before attend the class.
John is a really nice guy. Kind of awkward, but that makes the lectures enjoyable. The tests were not representative of the material in the textbook so you really have to pay attention in class.
Did not like this class at all. I feel like he's a nice guy, but not great at actually teaching. The material was pretty dry most of the time, and he makes weird jokes to try to break it up. Try to pay attention - it's hard, but the tests were clearly based off of the lectures. Attendance was randomly taken.
Professor Mitchell was very lenient with us. I missed an exam and he let me take it no questions asked. However the class itself was ridiculously hard. 4 exams, 1 project and quizzes. Quizzes were impossible unless you learned the whole entire unit before lab. Professor is awesome but don't take this class if you don't have to. I'm hoping to pass.
Really great teacher, he makes everything extremely clear in his lectures as long as you are paying attention! Show up and take notes and the exams will be a piece of cake. Also just a great guy in general, hes funny and really cares.
DON'T BUY THE TEXTBOOK FOR BIOL004. YOU WILL NEVER USE IT. Professor gives you all the notes you need to know on blackboard, lectures make you want to sleep, and always goes off on weird tangents.
This was the hardest class I've ever tried to take. I bought the $250 textbook to not use it once the entire semester, the tests were extremely difficult, and if you didn't take extremely thorough notes at every single lecture and then study them for hours on end, you would not pass the tests (which are on multiple units and HUGE by the way)
I absolutely love Dr. Mitchell. He is always enthusiastic and in a good mood. His lectures can sometimes be tedious, but that is just because there is so much material being shared during the lecture. I personally love his examples and side stories because they are a nice break from just going over lists of information.
He's a nice guy. His lectures are super dry so you either have to really force yourself to pay attention or teach it to yourself. He tries to make the class easy: he gives you all the notes to the lectures. It wasn't such a bad course to get the lab science req out of the way.
the single sweetest man. pateint. passionate about the subject. competent. cares about your success. its clear he just wants his students to succeed, even if biology isn't your strong suit.
DO NOT BUY THE TEXTBOOK, YOU WILL NEVER USE IT. Also if you do not study two weeks before the exams you will fail them. Goes on tangents the entire lecture and teaches nothing. We have to teach ourselves the entire class. There are also no specifics for what's on the tests so you have to study every detail just in case. Teaches absolutely nothing.
If you're not also enrolled in the Lab, you really don't need the textbook. But you should take good notes & study the slides he uploads. Exams are BIG & annoying & very detailed. I liked the class itself but not the work attached; bio is not my thing & this was just for a gen-ed requirement. Nice guy, but for me a slog to get through.
Pretty bizarre guy, his lectures were all over the place and he couldnt get out a complete idea about something without going off on a tangent. His notes are helpful because his lecture slides are way too crowded with info.
He's an ok guy, but always goes on tangents. His slides are packed with information and very difficult to read. It was very difficult to determine what we needed to know for exams, and there were often questions on the exams with material I hadn't seen before. Easier to teach yourself from the textbook.
Every single piece of content is shared with students at the beginning of the semester, including slides and notes. During lectures, John frequently seems to go on random tangents that have nothing to do with the course content. He is a nice guy for sure, but I don't think I would take another course of his again. I am a CS major for context.
BIOL013 is simply the online lab for BIOL003. The labs use Adobe Flash Player, which is outdated and almost obsolete. I found all the labs to be time-consuming but painfully easy. I got an A+ with very little effort. This course should definitely be updated with more modern online content because the software used was buggy and inconsistent.
His passion is very evident, but sometimes he is so passionate he goes on rants that are unrelated to what we are learning. He has a dry sense of humor and changes his voices a lot. It can be a little strange and distracting. I basically taught myself from reading the book.
He's a pretty silly guy and goes on tangents. I definitely fell asleep in his class multiple times but it was overall alright, I felt like I got something out of it.
John is a great professor because of his love for biology. He makes sure students comprehend complex topics by relating them to real life situations through a variety of hilarious and inspirational stories. I would 10/10 take this class again and send him a friend request cause this is a guy I want to get to know better.
This class is what will ruin my GPA. There is no interaction in lecture, and he won't do review before exams. There are not even iClicker questions or any possible way to check your knowledge. The only thing that your grade depends on is 4 exams where more than half the material is not even covered in class.
Although he is smart, he talks rather than teaches. He posts all material and notes on the lectures at the beginning of the semester and expects you to know all of it for exams, which are worth almost your entire grade, but doesn't address half of it in lectures. I found his lectures to be very dry and he goes off on a lot of random tangents.
took BIOL003 with him this summer. Very clear grading criteria, posts all the materials before the first day, tests are very straightforward. He's a pretty funny lecturer and tries to simplify the concepts since he knows this is a gen ed class. I would definitely recommend for an easier nat sci gen ed! bonus: learned SO much about biology!!
So many typos on his exams. You only get a grade back so you don't get to see what you did wrong. I understand it's an online class but it's just unfair in my opinion. also you are only graded on the mastering homework and exams so it's hard to get a good grade if you do bad on one thing.
This was an online class. The work was posted in a timely matter and the work you do is automatically graded. I tis a quick and simple class. As long as you do the work you'll get a good grade.
Professor Mitchell is knowledgeable, if a little boring, and there were more than a few occasions where I thought someone should educate him about eating disorders and being mindful of his language around that. Grading was only based on four big tests and a few assignments, and we never got tests back, so that felt a little unfair.
He is a great guy and was so helpful in ensuring that I finished strong but I found his lecture style extremely confusing. I suggest talking to him as soon as possible if you are struggling since the accommodations helped to save my grade.
All material is presented online and he gives no feedback on the exams so it's hard to know where you lost points on. Definitely study for the exams, they aren't that hard but if you are depending on your notes.
Prof. Mitchell only grades you off of four exams and your average from all homework assignments. He does not offer any way to boost your grade (do not ask for it, you will likely receive a passive aggressive email) so how you fair in the class will be based solely off of your exams and one extra grade. I do not agree with his teaching style.
This is an online course. With the change in course numbering, it's BIOL 1155, The Human Body. There are 4 major exams. No cumulative final. There are many lectures to watch. The 5th grade that factors in is the average score of your four homework assignments leading up to each exam. Quizlet can be helpful when doing the homework assignments.
I took the online, asynchronous, human bio class that is geared towards non-stem students. Unfortunately this was not an easy class, the professor was not helpful when it came to answering questions. I emailed twice with questions, both ending up unanswered and you never get get to see what you got wrong on an exam. Don't take this class.
Super boring lectures and you are only graded on the labs, homework, and exams. If you have the discipline, his class can be easy enough, but I would recommend taking regular biology or some other science for your requirement.
Professor Mitchell's class can be entertaining, but requires consistent effort. The workload is manageable, and Unstuck ai proved useful for study prep alongside the textbook. Overall, a decent course if you engage with the material.
Professor Mitchell is incompetent. I know this is an online course but you recieve no feedback on the four exams you take that make up 80% of your final grade. I reached out multiple times through email and on teams and recieved no response. Don't take this class unless you like biology a lot and are okay with not knowing where you went wrong.
