Moffat is a great teacher. He's very easy going, polite and very helpful. He never puts you down or makes you feel like you're asking a dumb question. Lectures were also easy to follow because he puts it up on the web beforehand and we just add our own notes during lecture!
This teacher not recommended for any english second language student because you need some basic knowledge that international people do not get it.
one of the best teachers. He knows his stuff and will do anything to help you understand and do well. he responds questions via email asap.
Great teacher and very helpful. I would take another class with him any day ^_~
Fantastic instructor, and can provide many explanations with great examples. I rates him "easy," but the student is accountable for making this class easy as well as the instructor. He allowed us to study from every text, though all the information needed is provided if the student attends all classes.
John is a great teacher who teaches with the intent to get his students to understand, enjoy the class and get their money's worth. He is not the type of teacher who is out to trick you or make it impossible for you to do well. If you take full advantage of all the extra help he offers and attend classes regularly, you will do great and have fun!
I recommend John especially for people who are afraid of taking science classes. He gave extensive study guides that, if you studied them, prepared you completely. He e-mailed all lecture notes to students before class. As he promised, all test questions came directly from his lectures. A great guy, joked and smiled a lot. I highly recommend.
A nice teacher that kept the class interesting. He was always prepared and you can tell he is really into the subject. The tests were also on the easy side.
John is a superb teacher. Very obviously loves his work and wants you to do well. Quite knowledgeable on his subjects, while also being non-condescending. John is a teacher that is extremely open to feedback from his students which I find refreshing. I have taken multiple classes with John and would recommend him in a heartbeat.
I LOVED HIM!! He's so personable and interesting, definitely looked forward to this class every day. He's very helpful and genuinely wants you to learn, I would recommend him for sure :)
Interesting class, taught in a funny and memorable way. John really cares about biology and animal behavior and wants you to learn. Study the lectures, that information will be EXACTLY what is on the test. Fairly easy class if you STUDY. Great way to fulfill the science requirement.
Great teacher. He has a lively and engaging teaching style, and doesn't try to make classes what they're not. His tests are pretty easy, but you do have to study.
Good teacher but tough class no matter who teaches it. Gives out long study guides and powerpoints- use these and study groups and do ALL the reading. Lectures are confusing/challenging so ask questions and prepare to take LOTS of notes. If possible, do the reading before the lecture on it otherwise you will be even more confused!
So I passed his class and re took it with Gong to get a higher grade. Now I realize what a great and very entertaining teacher he is. He is hard, and I'm suprised I passed the last time. We learned so much more than you do in Gong's class. Gong is easier and organized, but you actually work your ass off for Moffat's class, but you learn more.
Didnt buy the textbook. Print the power point notes, do the study guides and you should make an A. Easy class and he makes it fun. Highly recommend.
Awesome teacher with great energy. Took him at night and he could keep a whole classroom of students awake after everyone had worked an 8 hour day. Highly recommended!
He?s organized, enthusiastic and knows a lot about what he?s teaching. He is always willing to meet with you and help you with questions. Honestly one of the best teachers I?ve ever had.
If you want to sink your GPA take his class.
This class is difficult although it's quite interesting. If you want an A, try as hard as you can!
Had him for Animal Behavior. Very helpful and always willing to talk. Promptly answers emails and posts his lectures online in case you miss a lecture, not to mention very thorough study guides for every exam. Overall, very friendly, approachable, and easy to get along with guy and great instructor.
Ruined my chances at getting into a four year. If you take only his class and you don't work or have a life and only study, you might pass.... but probably not
He's not easy. He expects a lot out of his students, but seeing the difficulty level of the class, it's fair. I learned a lot from his class, and you put in the effort, you'll get the grade you deserve.
Best professor at SCCC! Hands Down.
John is a great teacher. His class is engaging and he is fun, smart and excited about the subject matter. The book is completely pointless to buy, he puts all of his lectures on powerpoint & has his students print up copies of them to take notes. He covers a lot of material in his lectures and the exams can be tricky, showing up to class is a must!
John is a cool guy with a lively personality, very good with the lecture. Your grade is entirely dependant on the exams, there are no lab assignments for additional points. I actually bombed one of the 5 exams and still managed to get a B in the class. Don't take this class lightly and study hard and you should do fine.
I think Moffatt likes to consider himself a real tough guy instructor. He expect a lot from his students- which is fine, but he makes you feel like a jerk if you don't perform as well as he would like. So many other great instructors- choose one of them instead.
Great Professor and he actually care. One of the best I have ever had. Always willing to help in person or by email. Use his study guides and you will do great.
John is one of the true gems of Seattle Central. Hands down best teacher I have ever had(including a few UW professors). Some people just KNOW how to teach, and John is one of them. He will take your questions seriously and find ways to explain that everyone can understand. I only wish I had discovered him earlier before transferring.
John is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor. He presents his information clearly through Powerpoint presentations, but the book is irrelevant. Throughout the entire quarter, I opened the book only once, and I didn't find what I was looking for. I have a tremendous amount of respect for his ability.
Easy class, learn about alot of animals and interesting to learn about us too. There are some strange animals out there. could use more quizzes but takehomes are simple
Good teacher. Do not take for an easy A - he will make you work for it. Covers all you need to know in lecture, so show up. Makes himself available frequently for extra help if you need it. Fair grader, and just generally a nice and reasonable guy. Offers bonus points on exams to help your grade. Gives interesting lectures. Highly recommend.
Professor Moff is definitely one of the best! His passion for what he does is quite obvious from the start. I wouldn't say his class is the easiest; however, if you're willing to devote as much time studying as he does preparing lecture/lab and exams...you'll do great! He wants to see you do as well as you're willing to do for yourself! Go for it!
John is an amazing teacher for an extremely hard subject. Expect to spend 10-15 hours per week outside of class studying. Do not miss class, be prepared, review the lecture slides, complete the study guides, do not get behind. I'd take this class from this teacher again.
Awesome class it was my fav of all time. Easy stuff to learna about lots of cool and weird aniamls. Even us!
Great class, I loved learning about the different animals. He is a great professor, if you don't show up don't expect to do well on the tests but thats normal with every class. Would take him again in a heart beat.
Great lectures with accessible powerpoint so its easy to study.
You will know your A & P when you finish this class. It's a ton of work, you have to attend every class and keep up on your studying. Use the open lab time, you'll need it to get a good grade. If you complete the study guides and study them before the tests, you'll do great. The study guides are very long, so be prepared to work. Would take again!
Show up to class and take thorough notes. Animal Behavior is such an interesting class with so many takeaways, you should not have a difficult time learning the information. Your grade solely relies upon your exams/final/presentation. Great professor. Also, don't buy the textbook. You will never look at it.
John was an amazing professor! His lectures were quite entertaining because he teaches you awesome new things about animals and he has the energy to make the morning class fun! As long as you pay attention in class, memorize the material & study, you'll get a 4.0 easily!
John is very enthusiastic with what he's teaching. He has a lot of energy while lecturing which makes you understand the material well. There is a lot of stuff covered in the class and you really need to be there everyday to learn it all. Studying is really important to do well on tests. He also threw some bonus points on them which helped my grade
Study and be there.
John is the best! He's charismatic, so his lectures are clear and engaging. He's great at breaking down dense material and his study guides are helpful too. If you can get through the study guide, you'll do amazing on exams. Most importantly, John genuinely cares about his students. This is rare, so don't hesitate to ask for help!
John's a cool dude. Looks kinda like Boomhauer from King of the Hill with glasses. Talks a lot too, but has far more interesting things to say than Boomhauer. His Animal Behaviour class is quite material-heavy for no book, but you do end up getting a lot of great information from it at the end of the quarter. You'll have some fun in his class.
Come to class. He knows what he's talking about. He cares about his students very deeply and has a lot of lessons for people in A&P, biology, zoology, but most importantly, how to study and devour information to be successful in college, PA school, or whatever you go on to do. Bring your thinking cap and know you're going to work for your grades.
I know anatomy and physiology classes are supposed to cover a lot of ground and ours was absolutely no exception. I went to class every day, went often to the open lab, and studied a lot. John will show up early. He'll stay late. He'll tell you exactly why you need to know it. He'll prepare you to honor medicine and human bodies. So much respect.
Difficult tests!
Tough grader
I love this class! John's lectures are amazing. He doesn't mark attendance, but his exams are based on lectures. E.g. he will tell you a word that will be on the exam. You have no way to get this point if you are absent.(unless you have a good friend) No homework and easy labs. Exams have study guides. Fun facts about animals. Highly recommended.
I took this class in summer quarter-big mistake! There was so much content! John's lectures were very condensed-but it was a really short quarter. If you ask for help he will explain things in 10 different ways if needed, and come in early in the morning too. Be ready to study at home a lot!
I love him.
I took John in the summer and he's an amazing teacher, i've learned a lot from his class. He breaks things down in a way thats very clear and will provide you the resources necessary to do well on exams and in the course in general. He will teach you effective ways to study, for me that was one of the biggest take aways from his class.
I took Animal Behavior and I loved it! John is funny in an old man type way. He knows a lot about things not even covered in class. If you need his help, he can be reached via email. The lab portion of the class was super easy (we only did 1 activity that could be called a "lab"). SHOW UP to class, TAKE NOTES, and STUDY for the tests!
Everything He taught was interesting that learning didn't felt forced. He's an understanding teacher and has a little humor to him. what he teaches is what's on the exam, ill take him again
10/10 A real A+ Guy and class. My favorite class at Central by far. Pretty easy Lab credit, no lab write-ups or anything most lab days you just watch documentaries. Lots of words you need to memorize and you HAVE to go to class and pay attention. Incredibly interesting and fun class, highly recommend.
Professor John is amazing! The class is based off of lectures however, he keeps it engaging and is always making sure everyone is understanding the material and he is more than willing to stop and explain something! He just makes it so interesting and so easy to understand, which I appreciated! Hoping I can take him again. Amazing Professor.
He gave reviews before every exams and lots of extra credits. He is also caring and inspiring.
John is a great professor. He is clear on what he expects from you as a student and makes it easy to attain a good grade. While class isn't specifically mandatory, I highly doubt you will do well in the class if you don't attend class. He gives a detailed study guide for all tests and detailed lectures that have all the info you need to succeed.
Really engages with his students and wants to make sure they understand what hes teaching. A lot of criteria to learn but he makes it fun and easy to remember. always available outside of class to help you and go over exams.
I loved taking Bio 160 with him. He gave us information in an easy to understand, concise way. It was an online class (thanks COVID) but i frequently laughed aloud at his pre-recorded lectures because some parts were so funny. Even though I didnt get to meet him Irl I had the sense hes a very nice funny kind-hearted person, ljke a prof should be
Get into his class if you need A&P 1/2!! No homework, tests are straightforward and only on stuff directly from lectures, he does full study guides and good lectures. He is so helpful will always answer emails and get right back to you. The worst part is he uses comic sans font in his powerpoints... no ones perfect!
Moffat is one of the best professors I've had. He's really understanding and his lectures are easy to pay attention to. I had a hard time getting used to his material in the beginning because it's a lot of memorization, but he's clear about what he wants! Use the study guides and you'll get an A+ no problem. There's EC at the end of every exam!
Graded only on tests, with no useful feedback given on incorrect answers. Tests are unreasonably timed, he seems more obsessed with making sure you don't cheat on an online test than making sure students know the material. Good for "competitive" , "work best under stress" types.
Agree with the below poster. Had Prof. Moffat in Summer '21 and am confused as to how he has so many raving reviews. The timing on his exams was ridiculous and he was rarely available for office hours. Many of the other students shared the same sentiment. Also he had us do an extra credit assignment on his personal medical condition which was TMI.
Horrible class, just waste of time! No homework, no decent Labs. Practically Google class. Lab exam 34 minutes for 50 questions. Total 8 stressful exams. No decent feedbacks. Avoid him. There are other professors who teaches well and takes care of students.
I have had an AMAZING experience with Professor Moffat. I have taken him for Bio 160, Bio 241 and currently in Bio 242. His class is very straight forward he tells you exactly what is on the exam because all the answers come out of his lectures. He always make himself available to answer questions. I wish he taught every science subjects!!
I took John for 241 and currently taking 242. I disagree with the reviews that say that exam times are too short. He has lecture exams and anatomy exams separate. The lecture exams give you about a minute and a half to answer each, and answers will be short. The anatomy times are much shorter, but is still plenty if you study and know the material.
Dont take this class if you have a life outside of college.
I've taken for 160, 241, & 242. Doesn't give good feedback on missed exam questions. Sometimes questions are vague and unclear, & tests are unreasonably timed. His lectures are packed full of info, but he doesnt do a great job at making it all tie together. i usually have an "Ah ha!" moment way later. i'd only take if you have no life out of class
John Moffat is one of the best teachers Ive ever had. I took bio 160 with him and I am currently taking bio 241. He makes himself very accessible outside of class always responds to questions and remains enthusiastic about course material. I dont think its fair to rate his bio 241 course poorly because the content is notoriously so difficult.
Lectures are amazing. Very long but it doesn't seem that way with the way Moffat talks. He makes it interesting. There is TONS of material so you really have to be on top of it. Also, there is no homework or assignments. The only thing in the gradebook are your exams. This can seem scary but as long as you self study you'll be fine.
John moffat docks points on tests for random stuff doesn't have to make sense at all, gets mad if u r either too specific or not specific enough in ur response. This class is for u if u want to study constantly... like non stop
time limits for quizzes r laughable. U get barely any time to answer questions on lab tests. Also prepare to use google for this whole class cuz the lectures r nottttt helpful.
Moffat is amazing. He teaches so well and really lays out what you need to do in order to learn and pass. He is very transparent. Study guides are easy to follow. Time limit on exams could be a little longer but honestly if you put in the work and study enough you have more than enough time. He really pushes you to study and practice every day.
If you don't want to become more depressed after lab tests& lecture exams. Then, AVOID him!!
I was a 4.0 student before taking this class and now I will be lucky if I pass with a 2.5. John Moffat expects you to study upwards of 3 hr every day, no exceptions. We are graded solely on our tests and there is no way to make up for it if you bomb a test. If you ask him for help hell give a very vague response that in no way answers the question
This will be my first ratemyprofessor review and for good reason. If you want to learn and retain subject material, Professor Moffat will make sure you get there. Take advantage of his office hours! Most of us are taking this course for healthcare programs so might as well have a passionate professor with the answers.
Take his advice and watch his how-to study video if you take this course! Study the # of hours recommended otherwise, or you'll quickly fall behind. Study guides will be your best friend! Office hours played a massive role in my success in this course, and John will break down each concept in a way that is relatable to you, so it makes sense.
DO NOT take his class. He's doesn't care about his students and when you email him about questions he will basically laugh at you and provide no answer. Good luck if you have kids or a job. His exams are just absurd 16 mins for 25 questions. His letter videos are useless and his lab material. Overall he is the worst professor. I could go on & on.
I emailed him a few times to talk about a test and his response was disrespectful and had a mean, passive aggressive tone. I have never been so hurt by a professor before. He needs to learn how to communicate with students more effectively and respectfully if he is going to be teaching online courses.
He does not respond to emails, exam guides are useless! 16 min for 25 question exams is a recipe for a grade of barely passing. He makes 0 effort to provide support for students; If you are working part-time or full time, and have other responsibilities DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
This teacher has very long online lectures that are hard to digest. The test to minute ratio is always less than 30 seconds and the lab quizzes had an impossible minute to question ratio.
His lectures are very heavy. He expects you to remember exactly what you said on the lecture and on the test if you answer slightly different he will not give you the points. The class is only graded on test and he leaves the most passive aggressive comments ever that are not helpful in the slightest. I'm not even exaggerating on his tone it is mean
Professor Moffat, is a great, and fair individual. He respects hard workers, and helps you out if you really put in the work. All his answers are in the lecture videos, must listen very carefully what he says during the lecture. All that is graded are your exams must be fast with answering. Not easy if you aren't fast a typing.
Professor Muffat's classes are based on recorded lectures only, and your grades are based only on the very heavy exams. You have to answer precisely his words from recorded lectures. No homework, no extra activity. With a rate of 30- 45 seconds to answer each question, there is no time for slow typing or much thinking! Don`t take this class.
0 assignments, only exams that you get a ridiculously short amount of time for (15 mins for 15 questions that aren't multiple choice). If you fail the exams there's no way to make up for it, and he doesn't answer questions clearly.
Don't take this teacher. all he does is talk and when you go to lab you're just studying, and he will talk and goes off topic. also, he would make a 1-hour lecture video and will make a lecture exam and expect you remember all that. He would also give you a 50-question quiz and gives you at least 30 mins that's too short to take an exam.
Great professor, really cool, super knowledgeable and extremely clear on exactly what you need to know. Class is very test heavy for grades (basically only tests), but everything is covered in lecture videos (best I've ever had). Basically no homework (besides personal studying). Tough class due to tons of information. 10/10 would take again.
Posts multiple hour long lectures and expects you to know each word for verbatim. you better quote him word for word for tests you'll get it wrong and hell comment "nah". Gives no rescoures. You'll also have to teach yourself everything. You cant even pull from the textbook bc its not what he said. Will give you 30 minutes for a 50 question test.
Save yourself the trouble, super long lectures, exams suck, horrid feedback.
John is the worst and the best professor I've had. He's intelligent, taught like we're med students. pushed us, and held us accountable for our education. While he was a pain in the rear, he also prepared us for our future programs, and he genuinely cared about teaching us how to learn. Does have extra credit quizzes if you don't do well on exams.
Took him twice He was very available for help by email and in class. Lectures are clear, great study guides. Come to lab and can take the exams online at home, even for hybrid! which I loved for my schedule. Lots to learn you need to put in time. The final exams were optional - loved that since it helped me raise my grade.
First time I was able to make an A in a science class thanks to his study methods and study guides. Exams are not hard if you follow study guides. Enjoyed lectures they went along with lecture notes perfectly and study guides. Liked not having homework due to my work load.
John is an incredible professor who truly cares about his students! He is one of the best professors I have ever had. BIOL 242 contains a lot of material, but John breaks even the most complex topics down to very digestible pieces. He tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to pass. Those who left poor reviews clearly did not follow instructions!
I'll start this out by saying I am taking him again, and am happy to have him again. He is one of the best professors I have ever had - he knows the content, is great at explaining concepts, and truly cares about his students. LISTEN TO WHAT HE TELLS YOU - take all of his advice, and you'll do well in the course. 10000000% recommend him for A&P
Personally, I don't like to be babied by my professors. He speaks to his students like we are children and answers questions in riddles. He seems to get enjoyment from knowing more than his students instead of teaching them. Very tough grader and extremely particular with the answer he wants. His tests make zero sense. Very frustrating experience.
I LOVED his animal behavior class! Lectures are indeed long but they are super interesting and easy to understand. It's like one big nature documentary. I thought assignments were pretty easy and the final was a fun powerpoint presentation on an animal of your choosing. He was really nice and prompt to respond and grade as well!
Tough class with long lectures and strict exams. However, using unstuckstudy and staying on top of the material can really help. Avoid this prof if you have a busy schedule.
John is a knowledgable teacher, his lectures are long, expect 45 mins -1.5 hour (2 times a week). No homework in his class, except for exams (yes timed). Given very short time for exams, 25 questions in 16 minutes. Overall, lots of extra credit show up to class because he won't announce it, but will let you turn it in late for credit. Great Teacher
HEAVY written exams. No homework opportunities. 35 min for 50 question exam, “You should just know it.” Then will grade you poorly if your answers are informed by the textbook. He expects exam responses to be the EXACT verbiage he uses in lecture (full sentences he uses in lecture) BUT NOTES AREN'T ALLOWED? There is NO (0) room for error.
Do your assignments and keep up with the syllabus and you'll be ok
Best online class I have ever taken, and one of my favorite courses overall in terms of how engaging the professor's lectures are and the amount of knowledge gained from it. No busy work, just 8 exams. Watch the lectures, study the study guides, and you will do well with nothing to worry about. Plus you'll learn a TON, which isn't that the point?
He has this casual way to mock students when grading the exams. Oh, you didn't use the exact verbiage he did (without notes), points deducted. Oh, you didn't know the artery in this picture that is at a strange angle with no context cues as to where it is related to other arteries? It was covered in class--So was everything, John?
Cruel with emails: he's disdainful in the way he answers questions Exams: very little time and if you take full time he says he thinks you've cheated Exam responses: you need to match exactly what he says or you lose points (no notes) Lectures: dumps a lot of info but doesn't tie it together No flexibility if you need to miss class lectures
Avoid! He takes joy in failing students, said "I get paid very well to misinterpret your answers." intentionally misunderstands your test answers to mark you down. regularly tells the class we are behind and not doing well. all the lectures are pre-recorded from 2020. nothing taught in class, but attendance counts. No idea why people like his class
Syllabus doesn't reflect what is happening in class. Missed one day because I thought it was just a graded in lab activity and it turned out to be a lecture that was not recorded, even though the last time he had one of them he wrote it on the syllabus. He did not seem to care about updating the syllabus. Unaccommodating for those with a sick kid.
242 is a hard class by itself but he makes it fun to listen its never boring during lecture and he is very helpful and very understanding professor, he is by far the besttttt instructor in Seattle central.
just do yourself a favor and take his class because he is the best instructor alive. 242 is a very tough class but he makes your life easier and he makes the lecture fun and never boring.
