Great prof!!! He is very much into helping his students grasp onto the subject matter and making sure they learn. Very knowledgeable and educated, He knows his material. Makes class intereting and keeps it live. I highly recommend him for BIOSCI.
Great instructor!! He really wants you to learn the material, he uses study guides and answers emails at all hours of the day/night. Great powerpoint lecture notes, very helpful. Highly recommended
The professor explains the material very clearly. He doens't really care that we cover all of the chapters in his agenda throughout the quarter, he's willing to slow down so that we can really understand it better. If you do his study quides you'll do great on the tests! Also, he's dedicated to email- loves to answer students emails, quickly.
Great teacher, very helpful, somtimes rambles. LOVES teaching his subject and knows it well. Highly recommeded. Study guides very helpful, never needed textbook at all.
He is the best teacher.
John is absolutely the best teacher I've ever had at college level. He is approachable, helpful and makes the class interesting and fun. He also has the ability to explain topics of study very well so you actually learn (not just memorize)them. He is definitely not boring, dry , uncaring or pompous. I hightly reccomend this teacher!
I do not for how long Mr. Moffat has been teaching College classes, but I honestly hope that he will never lose his enthusiasm for teaching. It was pleasure attending his class, for many reasons; his helpfulness and availability to students (even at 2:00 AM you will get your question answered via email), his ability to make pleasant atmosphere befo
John Moffat is amazing. I have never had a teacher so willing to work so hard for his students. In his heart you can tell he loves teaching. He will take the extra minute to make sure you are understanding the topic. His study guides help you know what to study, and he will check your answers via email with you. No tricks or games on the exams.
Wonderful teacher! Did a great job making you think what causes this...and so on!! I highly recommend him to anyone wanting to learn not just take BIO211!
He is a nice guy. He helps to every single student in his class.
Very well taught
John is awesome. I learned a lot and amazingly I used it again later. He is very helpful and enthusiastic. He is very well organized and will keep you informed of all things going on. He really likes to email and you'll get several a day sometimes - fun. He is very animated in lecture which helps the info stick.
This professor prepared me extremely well for the pathophysiology class that I am taking now in nursing school. Much if not all that we learned others are having to relearn or learn for the first time.
John was an excellent teacher! Really helpful in learning the material. Gave ample opportunities to review material before quizzes and exams, and made learning the material more enjoyable. Make sure you are very detailed in your answers as he expects a lot of detail. Great teacher and person!
Awesome teacher. Passion for teaching is very evident. Makes learning fun. He makes himself available to students not only in school but also via e-mail. He actually responds to your e-mail for study questions even at 2 a.m. Class and handouts are very organized. Study guides are very helpful for quizes and exams. Thank you for everything.
John is an excellent professor. He cares about his students and wants them to learn and grasp the material. He made a difficult topic like Human Physiology easy to understand. He is a very dedicated instructor and tries to always be there when you need him.I don't think that anyone can present the material better than John.I give this instructor an A+
Absolutely one of THE best professors I have had in years. John is so dedicated and works so hard to help his students understand a difficult subject. He will meet with you on campus to go over materials before exams and will respond to emails at any time, day or night when his students have questions. He was incredible!
He might be good at physiology but Don't take his anatomy class in Summer. So fast, so hard, questions on the tests are not clear. It likes you have 2 class in the same time and A LOT OF Work to do. His assistant Mark is incompetent. so many student dropped and the average for the test was 69. Bad class ever.
how can this be that your grade is based only on tests? wow! this sucks. i mean really what about labs or worksheets or participation points.
He's a good person but he doesn't know how to teach Anatomy for student in summer. 7 and 1/2 weeks, he went over 15 topics and each topic you have to know anatomy and physiology in the same time or else there is no way you do well on test. It's not an anatomy class. He even cancel the reproductive system. His assistance's suck in grading test.
It's a nightmare.
THIS 'ANATOMY'CLASS SHOULD BE RENAMED "MINOR ANATOMY & MAJOR PHYSIOLOGY". A VERY FAST PACED CLASS. TESTS WERE WRITTEN TO FAIL STUDENTS WITH MORE PHYSIOLOGY QUESTIONS. GRADE IS BASED ON 3 TESTS. LAB INSTRUCTOR, MARK WALKER, WAS NOT HELPFUL BECAUSE HE HAS VERY LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF ANATOMY. A VERY, VERY DISAPPOINTING CLASS.
Hard class, a lot of anatomy, but lecture notes were very helpful, study guides were great. summer is a fast pace you need to study evey day!! but he spent time helping me - great with emails
A lot of work! TONS to memorize!! Summer is fast instructor very helpful - especially by email. I am taking his physiology class next quarter. I reccommend him, made sure we all understood and gave us study sheets.. exams hard but fair
Very fast paced class and alot of information. The lecture notes help out ALOT!!
John makes a tough class fun & easier to understand. He is ALWAYS willing to answer any questions. If you show up to class, put in 150% effort, ask questions, & stay on top you'll have no problem succeeding. DON'T take anatomy if you aren't willing to put in a lot of time. If udecide to take the class, & put in time you will be happy w/the outcome.
Anatomy is a hard class by nature and John does a great job making it accessible to students. If you don't want to work hard to learn difficult material, then take classes that are for slackers. It's a great class. Exams are hard and really draw out whether or not you're doing your part studying and truly learning and applying your knowledge.
John is nice and good person, you need to come and know him. I will take his physiology class. I hope other lab know more about him.
He is irresponsible cause he let an incompetent person like Mark Walker took care and graded half of your class. There was no help from him. He made his 1st and 2nd test very hard to discourage his students. At the end he had to give a lot of extra credit and graded on the curve or else the grade of his class would look really bad.
he did not curve the class, he was nice enough to add .2 to our gpa if we showed improvement. He was an excellent professor. Some of the test questions were hard, but if you studied the lecture notes and took good notes during lecture you would be fine. I got the grade I thought I would have gotten, so obviously there was no curve.
John is such a great person and a teacher. He makes his class so fun, and explains things very clearly. If you study his notes, you will get an A.
Great prof but needs a thicker skin. I heard through the grapevine that he got upset with a guy in our class for putting out what was actually a compliment. I read what this guy had written and it was favorable. Some people were inappropriate in their comments but if he can't take a compliment or a criticism, he needs to find a new job.
excellent professor. this class was hard but you need to get used to hard classes if you want to go to nursing school or dental hygiene school. do not take this class with another class like microbio in the summer or you are asking for it. john was excellent: kind, nice, smart, and funny. i would take another class with him in a heart beat
Excellent teacher in anatomy and physiology. Very very easy class and tests. If you are not smart and work hard enough, it'll be normal that you have a bad grade. Only stupid students take other heavy class with this class in summer. John is the best and help every students in his class. Thanks
For Mark Walker. He's GREAT, always willing to help and have a DEEP knowledge on anatomy. He will be a BIG teacher in anatomy next quarter. Come join his class and see it yourself.
I agree - this guy needs a thicker skin. He was upset by comments on this site and went on what I'd call a witch hunt. He should understand that people comment on the class and not necessarily his teaching style or him personally. Anatomy during the summer is hard. I agree that Mark was not helpful...but I passed so I can't complain too much.
He was great! Ya, a very hard class and tons of material but it was a summer class. He always answered questions even by email, study guides were sooo helpful and we had 6 tests not 3. he did not go on a "whitch" hunt. He did send out 1 email asking why negative comments were made so he could improve. I am taking his physio class in fall
Extremely knowledgeable in the subject matter. Cares that you learn the material. Exams are pretty tough if you're looking to get a 4.0 but you will definitely learn the material in this class. I recommend this instructor highly.
Great quality instructor and educator! Understands what students need, more then willing to help via e-mail or office hrs- take advantage of that! Not easy but fair. Need to understand concepts not memorize, ask for help right away when you are struggling. John is very approachable, cares that you learn. Wish more were like him!
Have had him for both Anatomy and Phys. Difficult classes but John is a great teacher, very helpful, very clear on what he wants you to know, cares about teaching. Hold off on buying the book until you go to class, with his Powerpoints I rarely cracked either of them.
John has a way of making difficult concepts easier to understand. But this is a difficult class - expect to spend at least 20-25 hours a week on study material. Don't waste your time buying the book - I never opended it.
If you are going into the medical field, this is the class to take. He definitely keeps you busy. Coming out of the class, I can still remember 95% of what was on the very first exam. The lectures are fun and entertaining. It's great to know that there still are great professors still out there.
If you want to sink your GPA take his class.
He will never give you a strait-forward answer; he believes you as a student must find your answer. However, if you don?t find it, he still not giving you answers. I believe if you have questions, you are interested in learning, he disagree. Why do we need an instructor by the way, if is a self taught class?
Even if really study your grade will be low with such complex and hard tests. I really regret taking this class. I hope I had read more reviews, not the ones he posted himself.
I regret this class, blow my chances at UW.
I took both A&P with John. His lectures are very clear, and the study guides/his teaching style really get you to think critically. They're tough subjects to begin with so unless you skip important material, it won't be easy. Expect to spend a lot of time studying and know that for every Q you ask, he will ask Qs in return to guide you to answer yo
As I was saying, don't expect to get an easy answer to your Qs. He will guide you to answer your own Q. That's how you learn. To the previous student's post: take ownership.
As I was saying, don't expect to get an easy answer to your Qs. He will guide you to answer your own Q. That's how you learn. To the previous student's post: take ownership and hold yourself accountable for your own performance.
Amazing teacher. He is the homie. Learned a lot, but had to work for it.
John definitely knows physiology, and he is talented at breaking it down into understandable components to best help students learn. It's possible to do well in this course while working and taking other classes, but you will work hard; to suggest anything else is more telling of the lazy, passive student than of John or of his teaching methods.
Excellent teacher. Would recommend him to everyone. You HAVE to spend time studying, go to class, and keep up. If you do, you will get an A. His tests are off the study guide he gives. He doesn't try to trick you, is very straight forward, and helpful! Rare find! I used an older phys book and didn't buy a new one. It worked great.
He's a hard teacher. You have to find the answers for your questions, you know, not everyone learn this way. In tests, it's confusing to answer. The question started with "what" and you don't get credit if you don't explain "why". He is the hardest instructor I've had; I never missed a class, did all the labs, but still sank my gpa.
PROS: Gives excellent lectures, encourages questions, only tests on material discussed, provides helpful power points and study guides, no homework to turn in (other than labs), offers generous extra credit on final exam. CONS: Massive overload of material (probably req'd by school). TIP: Record lectures! Make flashcards. You'll be sorry if you don't!
Great professor, but challenging class. Quizzes weekly (pretty easy), exams over lecture notes and indepth labs. Possible to do very well if you put the work into it. Not the type of class to skip. Highly recommend him if you want to actually learn AND get a good grade.
very helpful, answers emails and open to visits in office. One of the better professors I have had, good study guides
By far, the best teacher i've ever had. Physiology is not an easy class but if you work as much as the effort he gives on this class, then you will get the grade you deserve.
He is awesome!! The best college teacher I have ever had. He tests off lecture notes he gives you and class lectures. This is a really hard class no madder who you take it from. He is at least fair and a great teacher. Bank on 15+ hours a week of study.
Great use of powerpoints he finds ways a teaching method that will help you. He is very enthusistic and knows antomy very helpful in lab and will spend time with you. Easy to ask questions even by email. I recommend him and will took him for 232
John is really a great teacher, i took his course over the summer. His use of powerpoints and explanation of everything is fantastic. The only reason why you wouldn't get an A is if you fall behind and don't put in 100% effort. Need to study material daily to do well
Not an easy A. Expect to spend +15hrs studying b/c he teaches hard subjects, not because he is a hard teacher. Responds to questions efficiently over Canvas/email. Appreciates any and all questions. I attended every lab/class and came to every extra saturday study session(Summer Anatomy)Got a 3.9 overall but he notices hard work, bumped to a 4.0
He is by far the best teacher in Shoreline. He is very helpful, down to earth person, very understanding and accomodating. He gives you a lot of extra points to make up for low tests scores. You just have to stick on the LO's and Lecture notes. Don't get behind with the LO's because it does help you understand the whole lecture.
if you do not have a Clear understanding 1st Biology this teacher is NOT for you. He will often answer questions with questions and is not the best teacher to understand. He is very tough. Grades are test based and if you cannot figure out the answer your tests will reflect this. If u study and fail I believe the fault is the teacher teaching.
Awesome teacher! One of the best I have ever had. Do his study guides!! I still use his notes in nursing school. You will learn a lot if you follow his suggestions.
Had him for both anatomy and phisiology. His powerpoints are very helpful and he is good at explaining complicated stuff so it makes sense. Do his study guides, exams come from them
He's such an inspiring professor! His lectures are on point! always answering "?'s" Answer his study guide "?'s" U'll Ace the exams! replies to emails quickly! offers open lab n stays till as long as u want! I was goin thru a lot bt he helped me as a friendmentor! I doubt any other professor wuld do that for any student!#Mentor4Life! #wontRegret!
Very easy class, the is the question either in class or during office hours. For straightforward right questions from right of the lecture, he would even tell you some problems on the test before hand. Sometimes when a question would be asked he would take it another direction and not answer it at all so you needed to repeat it.
His lectures are clear cut and to the point and he manages to cram all of the information in. He is also willing to forego an assignment if he was not able to lecture on it, which is rare. He was extremely helpful the whole quarter, always available by email, office hours or Saturday open lab which was crucial. GO TO OPEN LAB on Saturdays w/John.
All information that you're tested on comes directly from the lectures- we didn't use the textbook at all. He's funny and happy to explain things multiple times so you truly understand. His open labs on Saturdays are great for getting some 1:1 explanations. Labs are primarily self-taught, and you're free to come and go as you please.
I took John for Anatomy and Physiology 1 &2 and couldn't ask for a more amazing professor. He is really encouraging and tells you how to pass his class. It is a difficult class like any other science class but if you study the way he teaches you, you should easily get a 4.0. Don't expect to pass if you're not putting the time in. John is so amazing
Very clear lecture. With powerpoints and Study guides to help you study.
Amazing teacher! Has clear power points for lecture and lab and even gives to study guides for the exams. Don't except to not put work into it though, Anatomy does take a lot of memorization and studying but he is the best teacher you can ask for. He is generous and it is very apparent that he cares and wants his students to succeed.
John is an amzing professor in A&P. I've never (yes, this is real) have been able to get anything higher than a 3.2 in any of the Shoreline CC classes, until taking John's class. The way he organizes his classes, lectures, and accessiblity is spot on for people who are not savvy in the science courses. He's more than willing to help students.
He was a great teacher. I retook this class with him because I struggled the first time around but he made it very clear what you need to study to do well. Anatomy/ Physiology are a lot of work but if you put in the effort you can do really well in his class.
John really cares about his students and he's amazing teacher! Textbook is not required but it definitely helps with learning all the different parts of the body. His lectures are clear and straight forward, but there is a lot of material so make sure you are on top of it. Tests are straight forward and if you know the material you can pass!
John is a great professor. I took his 241 class, loved his style, and now Im in his 242 class. No homework, the grading is purely off exams. Super funny, super smart, and the lectures are engaging. Exams are not multiple choice, they are fill in the blank. Make sure you study 1-2 hours a day, easy A.
John's the best instructor ever! He made teaching and learning A&P so easy. He can break down a topic and make you understand the most difficult part. He's one that can easily be approached and the best at helping you plan your time that will lead to your success. He has a heart of gold and is so concerned about his students' achievements.
There were only exams that were graded. No textbook, everything was uploaded by files. Exams were only about 50 minutes each for lecture exams, less for lab exams. He had "no due dates" so Canvas does not recognize it has an assignment with a due date, so you have to constantly check when exams would be.
This class is hard because the material is hard. John will do everything in his power to help you, but you have to put in the work. John posts a lot of practice material and helpful study guides. He has lots of office hours and is also available through canvas inbox and zoom meetings. This Prof is great for students who have learning challenges.
I had high expectations for professor Moffat, based on the majority of exceptional reviews he receives on this website. Unfortunately, he turned out to be the most disrespectful professor I have ever come across, and I am a post-bacc student. I am taking A&P 2 with a different professor at a different college. Moffat needs to listen to criticism.
Gave great study tips and advice. Really overall a great professor. His sense of humor made A&P more bearable.
One of the BEST professor ever at Shoreline. I took both BIOL241 and 242 online. His lectures are so helpful and easy to follow(he does his own recording, no others lectures), and there's NO homework, weekly quizzes or other things, JUST EXAMS (lecture & lab exams), which gives a lot of time to truly study without worrying about deadlines. TAKE IT!
John takes a hard subject and makes it as easy as possible. Definitely respect the man for what he does! Gives good advice on how to study A&P and what you need to do to get an A. Just stick with his plan, you can't go wrong. Asynchronous lectures were easy to follow. There were 4 lab tests and 4 lecture tests only, no busy work!
Only exams will make your grade. No extra credits or chance to improve your grade. Good lectures, but Lab part mostly from Youtube.
Stay away!!
Amazing teacher. 2 lectures/week and goes through each lecture very clearly. He makes learning easy and explains everything so well. He gives you a heads up every time something is posted and follows through the syllabus. Only grades exams and quizzes so no homework which gives you plenty of time to study for the exams. Plus he's funny!!
Lectures videos are very long, hard to understand and boring. Does not give enough time on exams and you need to answer quickly so that you will not run out of time. Tests are very hard! I do not recommend this Professor! I repeat, I do not recommend this professor!
John is by far one of my favorite teachers in the world! He's funny and caring. He cares about his students. His lectures are long, but everything you need to know is in there. He's very helpful. Don't hesitate to ask him any questions, he responds to emails very quickly. He gives lots of extra credits too.
i was wonder he got lots of great feedback on here. i will never take his classes again, only exams you can get points, without any homework, which makes very difficult to get a high points. very heavy exam, 40 seconds with short answers only very few multi choices. I am not good at spelling. stay away from him.
Does not give feedback. Tests are difficult, specific and intensely timed (ex: 50 questions to answer in 34 minutes).
Not organized at all when it comes to his files. The exams are the only way you will get points from this class. Lab exams are horrible with 50 questions and only 34 minutes REALLY!!! His feedback on the exams are a joke. Just makes you figure it out like if we had time to do that. Does not show that he cares for his students.
I'm currently in my first year of OT school at UW. Our A&P classes are SO CHALLENGING, but I'm so grateful for how well John prepared us for them. I know many aspects of human anatomy on a deeper, more granular level than much of my cohort & I credit John's comprehensive, complex instruction. He truly cares about his students & wants us to succeed.
Took him for 241 & 242, and I'm glad I did. Look at his overall ratings, he is that well regarded by his students for a reason. The man opened the lab EVERY Saturday for at least 6 hours so you could access the what you needed and talk to him if you had questions. Very interactive during lecture, very personable, very engaging.
This class did not work for me. No homework, nothing to really check your understanding prior to the exams, long lectures that are almost painful to force yourself to watch. Don't take this class if you need support from your professor.
Mr. Moffat has no empathy for students and is an extremely harsh grader. You will get zero credit on a question that has a single detail missing and zero credit on a question that has excessive detail. He is the most unreasonable and frustrating teacher I have ever had. He takes no responsibility for his students struggling and solely blames you.
Follow his rules and you will do great. I know most pple that gave negative comments about him prolly failed the class. I first failed the class 241 and I thought he was the worst Prof.but I realized myself ,followed his rules & did great. Do your part of studying and you will do great.
All exams! No homework or extra credit. He also refuses to let you know what you missed on the exams so there's no way to tell if you need to change your study method.
I thought his lectures were great and straight forward. His teaching style is clear, well organized and easy to follow. The subject is difficult but he does a great job explaining complex concepts and he is available if you have any questions! Try his 30/5 study technique and definitely put in the time he recommends for lab/lecture material!
I can't say enough about John Moffat. I took his A&P 241 during the summer quarter and right out of the gate expectations were given and with that a very well established way to get a good grade in the class. There was the warning of being a summer session class that it would be tough and it was, but very doable. Great class great instructor.
I took John for 241 and 242 and was bummed to find out his doesn't teach micro. If you want a professor that is going to give you the knowledge to learn he is the one. If your looking for an easy A go somewhere else. John is compassionate and will teach you to learn the material. He will make you a better student. 100% best instructor ever. BA
This teacher throws so many curveballs on his tests. Beware, guys!
4 those giving a bad review grow up. we took the same class, don't remember seeing you in open Sat labs or in the office hours where you could have gone over your tests directly with him. You probably got caught doing exactly what he said not to do on the final. Your lucky you didn't get reported and failed out of the class. Great class John!!!!
Just ask, he's willing to work with you. Absolutely amazing professor, highly recommend!
Great professor who clearly tells how you how to do well in his class. Very fair and understanding. Verys responsive to emails. Would take again if I could.
Moffat is a great professor but beware! The only things that go into the grade book are lab/lecture exams so if you have a lot of test anxiety I don't fully recommend his class, I do and it was hard! Beyond that he really does try his best to give you everything you'll need to pass, for example, teaches you how to study the first week of class!
I took John for 241 and now for 242. If he wasn't teaching 242 this summer, I would have waited to take this course until he was teaching it again. John is simply amazing. Very lecture heavy, but he breaks things down so well and in a way that helps you understand. He's very passionate about his students learning and is ALWAYS available. THE BEST!
I don't normally write reviews, but compared to a different professor at Shoreline who also taught A&P 1 (which I ended up dropping) John is so much more organized and approachable. His first lecture is about HOW to study because he cares about his students' success. Exams all online, no trick questions. Also he uses alot of emojis in messages lol
This professor doesn't seem to take a joy in teaching. How he presented content in lectures was dry and uninspiring, and he fixated on exam details that even now didn't seem to really matter compared to my other A&P professors. I withdrew from his online class after a few weeks of trying to make it work and avoided going forward.
His recorded and spoken lectures are very well done and effective.Complaints: 50% of the classes are just coming in to draw and color the anatomy and then leave which I find to be an absolute waste of class time. Study guides are disorganized and redundant; duplicate questions and questions not in conceptual order. Also low to no feedback on tests.
John's teaching style focuses on helping you truly understand the material. His lecture videos break down concepts clearly, using relatable examples. He also has a video on how to study in this class. Only exams are graded, and the final is optional. Go to his open labs and also review wrong answers with him, he might give extra points.
Professor John is detailed and passionate. Follow his study techniques like the 30/5 method, and you'll do well despite the challenging content. unstuck study was also super helpful for prep alongside the textbook.
