Class lectures very disordered, hard to pick out what is important
very amusing, but random and unorganized in his presentation
Really gives you a feel for info, an awesome, very knowledgable prof. GREAT!
He's a nut, but pretty cool. Lectures are hard to hear. Easy format and class.
Hilarious jokes, good format and lectures, go to lecture and read book.
Great teacher - knows the info and makes it interesting
His lectures are sometimes unclear, but he is hysterical! Read the text!
decent class...very funny..lectures are hard to pick up on though!
Hilarous
Very funny-lectures somewhat unorganized but interesting class

Tests on ideas not dates, if you can back an idea up it's easy.
Hella funny,very informative.No dates,only ideas If you're smart, it's all good.
no dates, but lecture is really unorganized and confusing
He jumps around in his lectures, but prepare well with the book, and it's easy!
Excellent lecturer, wants the "big picture" & not specific dates
His lectures are extremely hard to follow but funny!!!!
IN GODS NAME NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS HE IS THE WORST
Easy A if you pay attention and go to lecture- funny, be able to get broad idea
My FAV. Proff. A tad more reading than I would have liked. So funny. Awsome!
Hilarious guy, goes for the "Big Picture" , exams are a piece of cake, take him!
kind, aproachable, clear if you pay attention
Bad problems.
must do readings, great if you cant remember dates but do remember events.
Funny, easy grader, hard to understand at times, "it's all about the hair"
How can you not love Montano?Funny, approachable, great class. :)
Makes everything as clear as possible for 300 people. Go to class.
Montano's the BEST, clear, organized, made me want to read .

Funniest Prof on campus, easy grader, easy classes... best hist prof...TAKE HIM!

Great professor, very helpful, sooo funny
The class is like watchin live comedy. Don't have to read just take notes .
Crazy guy, easy class, skim readings and you're good
My fav. prof so far. Stay on track with quizzes/reading. Hes frickin Hilarious
Funny guy, classes are fun, tests are broad - my favorite prof!
He's a nut. All you have to do is keep up on the readings, which is my problem.
Prof who is like most students: disorganized, lazy. Hysterical, nice,& unPC though
This guy is the man. He is out of his mind, funny, tests are not hard.
he brings character to the class; he has many views about the subject
GREAT guy. Very helpful. If you talk at all, he loves you. READ
Great guy, funny, makes it interesting...lots of reading, but its worth it
SO funny i laughed out loud in class! lots of rding but u dont need to do it all
He's the man - take him.
Pretty easy class....the guys nuts, in a funny way.....
He's tough and scatter-brained at times, but still the best History Prof ever!
Lectures pointless , rambles too much, tests on the big picture of a topic
great, takes a while to focus but hey i got a B so whatever
Scatterbrained, but dedicated. Hard to follow! Be careful!
Great Prof. Easy interpretive tests- just get main themes. funniest prof alive!
Funny guy, have to study but he basically gives you the essay questions
Funny but stupid! Very unclear. TAs grade. Very unhelpful
He's a riot...very unorganized, but also hilarious. Just pay attention to what he emphasises for essays, study for map test. As for online quizzes, take them with other people and using your book...they can hurt you. PARTICIPATE AND HE'LL LOVE YOU!
Most hilarious prof., makes lectures interesting, read and listen to the main points he emphasizes and you'll do well
Greatest teacher I've had here, funny in lecture and office hours. If you go to lecture it is the easiest B you've ever gotten
dude, he's he the man...you the man, johnny...you the man
He's the man! Smart, funny guy who likes when your participate. Good experience to take his class
Large amount of reading is assigned, it helps to go to class. He's a good guy, one of the funniest professor's at this school.
what an awesome guy. Take him and you will laugh 90% of the time. He lets grad. seniors take an alternative final. Great prof.
Crazy-ass guy. What is up with this guy? He is extremely hard to follow. He has like 10 different voices he uses and he's all over the place. For a 100 level class there is just too much work.
This guy rocks, gives informative and funny lectures.... Classes are not that bad...
He is ridiculously demanding. If you annoy him in anyway, like by leaving when class is over even if he feels it shouldn't be, he becomes vindictive and threatens to fail you on drop of a dime.
I thought he was going to be cool, because he was funny, but his sexest jokes got old, and if he disapproves of one little thing you do, like leaving class on time he becomes extremely rude and decideds to try and fail you. Dont take!
worries more about doing standup than giving a cohesive lecture
Mixed feelings...he's a really nice guy, but his lectures are very abstract and convoluted...you will get very little out of them unless you read the textbook first. Also, the papers and exams require specific evidence, which is rather difficult.
Great prof, kinda scatter-brained, notes redundant to text, tough but fair grader
Crazy professor, funny, interesting class discussions, easy/moderate tests and papers
Crazy guy...a little obsessed with reproductive organs...but keeps lectures interesting...make sure you read the book and dont miss a lecture. Tough class, but well worth the fun lectures.
Funy, easy, and teaches very well. Just go to class and you can get an easy A- on any test.

Kind,responsive to students, great lectures.
My absolute favorite hist prof at the university. Always made class interesting, had great stories to tell! Tons to learn from him, but you've got to do the work to get an A. Well worth the time though.
I came into this class as an honors student and got a C+. Montano is unclear, he rants on and on alot, and his lectures run off on tangents all the time. I'm not sure why everyone else liked him, but I certainly didn't, and I got A's in all of my other classes.
LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT HIM...he made class fun, but you still have to buckle down and work for the A. He's a cutiepie.
hated, pig headed and a jerk. was to busy complaining and being **** to stay on topic. avod at all cost.
Amazing HIST professor! He does require a lot as far as reading goes, but really now, it IS a history class. Montano really made the class interesting and worth coming to every day. Loved him!
If he notices everyone's bored off their asses, he'll throw a joke in randomly and let you laugh for a good 5 minutes. I didn't get a great grade in his class but it was probably more my fault than his.
Hilarious! Every lecture is a history based stand-up routine. This was my second class with him and I plan on taking a third. You have to work for your A but if you want to learn and have a prof you love then he is it.
I would recommend anyone to take his class. Lectures are not mandatory, everything you really need to know is in the book. Do your work, he gives you multiple chances to redeem lost points- it's impossible to fail this class. He's also hilarious. He keeps you interested by holding your attention. He's also very personable, which is good.
This class was easy... good teacher... keeps you interested... Very funny too... listen what I say yo...
Montano is an awesome professor. Be prepared to read a lot and you will learn a great deal. Lectures are very informative and you will probably spend a lot of time laughing. An A is challenging but definitely possible.
Absolutely hilarious.. Lectures are not mandatory but do help... Don't lose your book, its a difficult semester if you do. Go to office hours and he will love you for it.. Good guy overall, wants his students to pass
One of my favorite History teachers/professors. Extremely funny, extremely knowledgable. He rewards effort and study.
Absolutely impossible to follow. If you are at all serious about learning history, avoid this man at all costs. He's one of those professors who have eccentric, overbearing personalities, and who love to hear themselves talk rather than genuinely teach their students and get them stimulated intellectually.
He is a really funny professor and really nice too. If you go to him about a grade you are not happy with, he will definitely work with you and possibly boost it up if you give a good argument! Read the book, you definitely need it and you can get a good grade.
Love this guy! Keeps your interest w/ his jokes and voice changes (tho it's sometimes hard to understand what he's saying). I really enjoyed going to his class. Reading the book is mandatory for the quizzes, but you can still pass if you don't. Very approachable about questions and grades.
I like him as a person. He's funny, eccentric, and fun to listen to. As a professor, I just don't get him. His teaching style is unlike anything I've ever encountered before. He's simply all over the place. You'll take him once and either never want to take him again, or want to have him teach all your classes. I'm in the former category.
Professor Montaño was very effective in his lectures. He's really quirky and makes most of his students laugh. However, he is a tough grader on tests and papers. Just study hard. I took this class as an elective and realized that I was only a sophomore. Only take this class if you're a junior or senior, or if you're a history major.
interesting funny teacher. TA graded 2 hard for a 100 level class.
the worest teacher i have ever had
Easily the funniest teacher I've ever had. Not hard to sit through class but the lectures are basically useless because nothing he says are on the quizes. Doesn't give the midterm questions although he does hint what they're on.
Funny guy. He tends to ramble off during lectures just to make fun of the frat boys or make a joke about the phillies. Make sure you read the book. The lectures are only summarizations/interpretations of the chapters. Easy grader on midterm and final. Make sure you study for map tests! He gives you a retake but it is much much harder. Good guy!
If there's ANY other option, don't take his class. Hard to follow in lectures, tries really hard to appeal to a younger audience with pop culture references, but it generally borders on inappropriate. Was not helpful with questions.
Awesome professor! I have taken more than one class with him because he is so great... You definitely need to have a knack for it though because not everyone appreciates his style of teaching. Overall a fair grader and it is pretty easy to do well in the class if you aren't completely lazy
This class was on the History of Ireland and he taught it in Gaelic. You could not take notes because you never knew what the Gaelic word meant or how to spell it. He would only sometimes write things on the board but it was only ever the word itself, not the meaning and he had such bad handwriting that you could not read it. He always seems high.
Montano is definitely an interesting dude, his class is really not that hard. His lectures are pointless all you have to do is read the textbook pages he assigns and you can get a good grade. online homeworks are hard though soo do those with a friend. Overall one of the easier and more entertaining teachers at UD. you will have to do work thou
Montano is laid back and very unclear when it comes to his class. He graded fairly, however the ta, who graded most of the assignments, was extremely hard for 100 level class. There are no notes and he rambles a lot. I got a C for the class and was expecting at least a B. Would not recommend taking!
I LOVED him. I was always excited to go to class because he was absolutely hilarious and taught history more as a story with different voices and wild actions than just a dull lecture. You can do well just by reading the textbook, but its easy to listen to him since he keeps class interesting. I totally recommend him.
This man is the worst professor I have ever had. His lectures are like a high speed tangent of inflections. Doesn't explain what hes looking for on papers, just expects you to write. Exams are easy if you can read the book and not pass out. Took this pass/fail to fill credits, wouldn't recommend it otherwise
This guy is the worst. The way he gives his lectures is all over the place, and it is impossible to take notes. He lost my midterm and then accused me of never taking it. When I told him I did, he still didn't believe me. He would rather accuse me of lying than admit he lost my test. I hate this guy.
he was my freshman year seminar guy and he is the absolute best he took us to Philadelphia and bought the whole class cheesesteaks. he even went into condom kingdom with the class which was a little weird hes a really nice guy
This guy is great. I love history so maybe I'm biased, but he was a ton of fun. It's an easy class, you don't have to do a whole lot. As long as you don't blatantly disrespect him, you're good. If you text in class or something like that though, he will yell at you. A lot. Take him if you have a chance, just make sure that you read the book.
I loved his class! He is all over the place but it helped keep me focused. Class is always interesting and he is really funny. Online tests are easy and he just goes off of the text book for midterm and final. If you go to office hours he will love you. He is a fair grader too. Hopefully I can take another of his classes!
Some history professors make history a drab list of facts and figures. Other professors make history a fascinating narrative. Monatno is the latter. He's hilarious, and really weaves a great story out of Tudor and Stuart Britain. Highly recommend him. One warning: reading load is rather heavy (six full books plus supplements).
AWESOME professor! He is chair of the undergrad history dept. He has made me decide to add history as a major! The lectures can be a bit confusing, but he really likes it when students come to his office to talk to him! I plan to take another class of his next semester. Also, if you should read all 6 books he assigns but so far it isn't necessary.
Prof. Montaño is certainly a unique professor. He makes class interesting and fun, and tells a lot of jokes. Either you like him or you don't. He was great. I learned a lot in his class. He is very helpful and wants you to succeed. His office hours are helpful if you need extra clarification/help. Take him if you can, very happy I had him.
This class isnt hard but it is also extremely boring and kind of just a pain in the butt. if you can take a more interesting class you should. two map tests, online quizzes every week, one written mid-term, a random paper and then a take home essay as your final. Overall he's a pretty nice guy.
Somehow Got a B+ only reveals 2 of the grades. Very confusing just follw the exact directions and ul b fine
He is a great professor and very nice if you are on his good side. Does not tolerate any BS. If you go to class and pay attention you will be fine. He will hate you if you talk, text or sleep during class though. I say go for it though its a great experience
He's a bit of an eccentric guy. Lectures are interesting enough, which is good because attendence is recorded. He talks really fast so its hard to keep track of the class sometimes. 1 essay exam, take home final essay(s), and a bunch of online quizzes. Keep on his good side tho, otherwise hes tough to get along with
Professor Montaño is a little hard to follow sometimes, he jumps around a lot. There's a lot of reading, and if you stay on top of that, you'll understand the lectures better. If he thinks you didn't read there will be a pop quiz. So just stay on top of the readings and you should be fine. He's very funny, too.
I've had several classes featuring John Montano and I have never left dissatisfied, his sense of humor and presentation of material is absolutely invigorating. Do not be intimidating by the reading, if you pay attention in class you are good to go. Mid-Term 1 Pick 10 Identification Mid-Term 2 Inclass essay 5-7p. paper Final 2 Takehome essay
He is terrible, I do not suggest you take him. Was very unclear, had to do a lot of reading, lectures were all over the place and unhelpful and he was very sassy. Critical of students and did not make me feel welcome. Would not take again.
Unethical! Lowered my grade when I challenged him about it! Rude, condescending, arrogant and I could go on. Don't take his class. I did not feel comfortable in his class as he liked to berate many students. You won't learn much and you will dread going to class. UD needs to investigate this one.
This guy is the worst
This guy was the worst professor ever. Unclear about many things and does not teach well. Hot-headed and full of himself. It is a good thing I went to class because it was not clear the final was a take home and I only learned about this during the last class.
Oh my god, never dealt with such a arrogant human being in my life, avoid at all cost..
If you find yourself in the arrogant individual's class, find the eject button immediately. Do not take any of his classes. He is not a good teacher. He seems to be an individual that is frustrated with his job and he likes to take it out on students. He was unclear about many items in class. It was just a horrible experience overall.
he isn't very clear on what he wants all the time so you'll need to go to office hours for a better explanation. beyond that, if you just show up and take decent notes, you should have an easy A on all papers and exams. you can clearly tell that he is passionate about his topic and his field cause he gets excited about everything!
Once you learn to speak Montañese his lectures become much easier to follow. There were two map tests that only an idiot wouldn't pass. There were weekly online quizzes that were fairly tough, but they don't count for much. The first written exam was super easy. The second paper was 6-8 pgs, and the final is two short papers. Nothing was too hard.
Absolutely the worst decision I've made at UD so far was to take a class with him. Most arrogant teacher I've ever met. Loves to ramble on and try and be funny during class. If attendance didn't count for your grade you wouldn't need to go because nothing he says makes sense anyways. Very unpleased with this "professor"
Montano is hilarious, takes attendance but if you know someone in the class they can sign you in. As long as you either pay attention in class OR do the reading you'll be fine. Weekly online quizzes were sort of annoying but only one exam and two essays which were graded by the TA. As long as you put a little bit of work in you'll be fine.
He is a great teacher ! Take him for any math. I strongly recommend him.
Amazing lecturer, exactly what you'd expect from a graduate school professor, engaging, loves his topic and makes the information come alive.
100% go abroad with him if you can. Chilliest prof ever
GO ABROAD WITH HIM! enjoy your time off getting credit and being able to explore ireland or london! the best! what an abroad trip should be :)
impossible to take notes because he talks at 100 mph and is usually talking complete gibberish. no power points, no laptops aloud. also everything he teaches specificaly concerning his early english history class hist 374 is not in order when spoken about in class. he jumps around from event to event and always mentions useless facts.
Prof Montano is nice, passionate guy but his class... Attendance is mandatory and his lectures go in a million different directions and dont make sense if you dont understand the language of montanese. 10 weekly quizzes which are hard and 1 midterm essay and 1 take home essay. If you dont wanna read the textbook to learn, dont take this class
Dr. Montaño is cool and you can tell he loves English history, but the problem is 99% of the time I have no idea what he's talking about. His lectures move at a million miles an hour and he constantly tries act like a standup comic, but when his jokes fall flat it only leaves us confused. Easy enough tests and essays, but there's better options
The class itself is not difficult. What makes it difficult is his lecturing. You never know what he's talking about. The man talks far too quickly and frequently gets off topic.
I loved Professor Montano! He's funny and tries to make the coursework interesting. Grade comprised of four items: two exams, one take-home exam, and one paper. He is an easy grader, he is looking for what you know, not what you dont know.
I liked Prof Montaño quite a bit. Every class was a lecture, and everything moved quickly (we did cover a few thousand years after all), but he made the lectures interesting particularly through his sense of humor. The only big problem I had was that he was definitely not tech savvy which was problematic for an online semester.
Where to even begin with this guy... His class is all lectures and readings that aren't important at all. This class had only four essays. That is your entire grade. His lectures are incredibly difficult to hear, understand, take notes on, and pay attention to. His slides do not help at all. This is the hardest class to take notes on.
I took this to fill the history breadth but it was horrible. There were few assignments so we had two papers that made up the majority of our grade. Lectures were hard to follow, he was vague with everything and then got mad when students asked for clarification. He locked canvas grades and so no one knew their grade until end of sem.
Seems to think he is some type of actor putting on a performance. His lectures are impossible to follow and he is rude to students. If you want to have a good semester, avoid this guy.
So hard to follow, speaks his own language. I was more focused on trying to figure out what he was saying more than the actual lecture. Avoid this class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS TAKE THE ONLINE ONE OF or something different. HE IS TERIBBLE. save your self seriously. EXTREMELY boring classes he speaks his own language and just keeps going. posts nothing on canvas and is rude if you email him about something you dont understand DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Lectures are hard to follow, but using tools like Unstuck AI alongside the textbook can help. Avoid this professor if you want an easier semester.
Professor Montano was generally a good teacher and was pretty funny at times. He just talked a little too fast that it was kind of hard to keep up with what he was saying. But overall, good and I would be willing to take this professor again.
Interesting Irish history course from a knowledgeable professor who is not always organized. Yes, the guy seems to be a hippie left over from the 1970s but he's funny and nice (if you talk to him) and the course was not too demanding for a 300-level one.
Awful class to take for an elective. Does not understand technology and does not use Canvas and tells you everything that is due in class. The lectures are hard to follow and extremely difficult to understand as he likes to whisper and change his tone. I would be better off learning history from any textbook as his lectures did not help me.
Do not take this class. I couldn't understand a thing Professor Montano said the ENTIRE semester because he was either whispering, or speaking at an absurdly fast pace. He grades terribly on every assignment you will have. Worst class by far. He was also insanely rude when you email him asking questions.
Prof. Montano is a weird person lwky. He's like kind but also not at the same time I can't describe it. Literally no hw at all except for one essay due like last week of semester. Only graded by that essay (20%), midterm (20%), final (30%), 2 map quizs (10%), and online quiz's (10 questions, 10%). Very boring lectures, I played Roblox every class
