Probably the worst orgo lecturer out of all of them. Writes small, just points, only writes key points sometimes. Barely mentions helpful tips (which I had to learn from other students with different teachers). I'm basically learning Orgo through the course pack, SLC group, and Nolta's workshops. I would rate his usefulness as 10%.
Montgomery makes everything so clear. I didn't do anything but attend his lectures and i passed with a descent grade.
Montgomery is fine. People who do not like him tend to say so because they're mad that they aren't devoted enough to keep up with his class. I recommend him 100%.
Great professor. Don't know where i'd be without him.
Great lectures for exams one and two, lectures for exam three were extremely disorganized. I never knew which reaction he was doing an example of. Also, the third test featured questions he lectured about THE NEXT DAY-I felt that was unfair.
I didn't find Professor Montgomery great at all. He was far less organized than some of the other lecturers, and he always seemed behind. He also didn't go very much in depth into what he was saying, just "this is this, now lets move on"
I really liked Montgomery and recommend him as a professor. He was very clear and knew a lot about the subject. I really enjoyed having him as a professor and found him very helpful.
I thought Montgomery was a really good professor. He was very clear, and is great for people who have never had any past orgo experience.
Not very helpful, didn't care about students at all.
Montgomery was a pretty good professor. He wasn't the greatest at tying concepts together and he tended to talk a lot sometimes, but that was his only negative. He explained the current topic very well, however, and he always made sure to give us key points before the exam.
nothing special, but he does his job. He does a pretty good job explaining, and he is willing to answer any questions. He can be very monotonous at times.
John knows his stuff and explains material very well. I attended all 4 lectures at some point and his was far and away the best. No matter what lecture you go to you have to put in work to get a good grade in orgo. (He also sponges down the boards better than anybody else which makes it really easy to read his notes)
Good at organizing the material, you know exactly what to expect on the exams.
He tries hard to present the material in an understandable manner to the students, often via a copious supply of examples and illustrations, which is what orgo is all about anyway! Reviewed well for examinations, especially the last two. Overall, he's a professor I would take a chemistry class with again, if I had to.
Montgomery was a good professor. His notes on the blackboard were very clear and easy to follow. I'd recommend him. Just remember this is a difficult class. Join a study group and do the coursepack! Also, do yourself a favor and wait until after lecture to ask a question, please!
Very monotonous, but can still explain concepts relatively well. Those who struggled in his class probably only had problems because it is a challenging class and subject in general, but J-Mont is a good professor. I'd recommend taking lecture with him...unless of course you can take it with Nolta.
I never minded attending Monty's lectures because they were both helpful and his calm demeanor was pleasant. Orgo is a class that requires you do work outside of lecture, but in lecture, John does a very good job of laying the foundation.
Montgomery is the man. He is phenomenal at teaching and although monotonous at times, very clear in lectures. I would advice him over any other 210 teacher, idk why ppl ride on nolta's jock some of her exam questions are weird i've seen. monty is an awesome teacher bottomline, stay up to date on notes and you'll be fine.
John Montgomery is an amazing professor. Explains the material in a very clear and meaningful way. No one is better for Orgo I.
Montgomery was an amazing teacher. He always explained the material clearly and to the point. Although some people may say he is monotonous, it is worth it. I learned so much and he is very willing to answer questions after class. And his slight southern accent on some words is great!
He's ok. Some topics he explains really well, but others are not clear. If possible, take orgo I with Nolta or Wolfe, but Monty will prepare you fine for the exams as long as you do supplemental studying.
He's somewhat monotonous, but he explains the material very clearly and writes almost everything on the board, which is extremely helpful. Monty also does a good job preparing for the exam.
It really doesn't matter. because at UM you can go to another lecture. However, I went to few other lectures. and I really like him. He explains clearly, and his examples are very helpful. He takes him time though, but gets the material done and explained. He also tells you what you need to know for the exam. I would recommend him anytime.
One of my favorite teachers in an interesting class! Mon-ty! Mon-ty! Mon-ty! He will help with all questions and he is a cool dude. If people say he is monotonous, he is not. Good references to real life applications when available but straight forward legit class. People say it is the hardest, but it is not.
Excellent professor. He is very clear and loves to summarize the lessons into very useful charts. Would definately reccommend him for Orgo 1 if he is an available lecturer.
He is really good at highlighting whats important for exams. He takes his time explaining concepts/examples to make sure its clear. He also writes very neatly on the chalkboard. Overall, he's great for orgo 1
I found this class extremely difficult; I'm more of a gen chem person. Montgomery's lectures are a bit dry so it's hard to pay attention. I would recommend Wolfe.
Clear, good prof for orgo 210
He was a very clear, thorough, and organized professor. LOVED his level of organization and helpfulness. He went above and beyond to help me since I wasn't able to attend the open discussions. VERY approachable! Advice: Sit closer to him in the chem 1800, you'll understand him better and ASK him for help, he WILL help!
Montgomery was my favorite professor this whole semester. So clear in explaining concepts, willing to help, and to be honest, I preferred him so much more than Coppola. I got a raw score of an A on the last 2 exams, and that means something. I'm gonna miss him next semester!
Difficult class and boring lecture. Montgomery does not provide useful examples of organic chemistry, just structural principles and formulas. Lab was much better than lecture.
He may be somewhat dry and hard to listen to, but he explains the material fairly well.
Great lecturer, very clear, actually cares about students. Takes the time to review material from previous exams that students struggled with. And his board-erasing techniques are mezmorizing. Seriously, you'll see.
Great professor and great man. He makes a very difficult subject easier to understand by giving clear examples in class. Really cares about his students. I actually really liked taking orgo.
Montgomery is an excellent teacher. He always explained things clearly and answered questions. He would review tough concepts for the exams which was really helpful. Everyone says Coppola is the best but Montgomery is just as great! I didn't use the book an awful lot but I would still recommend it.
Professor Montgomery was great! Very clear and stayed ahead of the other professors. Cared a lot about the class and presented the material in a very organized fashion. Highly recommended.
A decent lecturer, learned the material required for the exam. Montgomery only teaches occasionally, mostly doing research and it really shows. Appears uninterested and never replies to emails or seems eager to help students outside the class. Had to go to Coppola to get my questions answered many times.
Dr. Montgomery was great! His lectures are somewhat boring, but he does a great job explaining the material and wants all the students to do well. His exams are really fair and he does a good job letting you know what to expect. He's also very helpful in office hours. I would highly recommend him for Orgo 2!
READ: F13 was Montgomery's first time teaching Orgo II, so he had different exam coverage than past years. His lectures are helpful. Use the coursepack and practice exams, and don't bother with the book. His exams were VERY EASY compared to past years. If you did well in Orgo I, then Orgo II should be cake (but then again, it's still orgo).
Lectures are pretty boring, but otherwise a great professor. Writes pretty easy exams with no surprises. Exams are based entirely on lecture notes.
Montgomery was a genuinely nice guy. Other than the 2nd exam (which was brutal), he wrote pretty fair exams. Teaches the course with a no-nonsense approach, really lets you know what you do and do not need to know for the exam. Makes a good effort to incorporate real life applications of orgo, i recommend him!
Very good teacher who taught exactly what was needed for the class. Exams were tough, but if you studied hard, then you could know roughly what to expect on the exams.
Wow-the best! Really helped us know what to focus on and what was't needed, taught directly to the exams. I think that really helped my grade. Good teacher too and really a nice guy, always willing to help. Too bad he's not teaching Orgo 2 anymore-but if he ever does-make sure to get him! My orgo experience was made much better bc of this class
Dr. M did an overall great job teaching chem 215, and I hope to have him in my upper level coursework. I was impressed by his knowledge and teaching skills. He has a true love for chemistry which makes the class that much more interesting.
He is one of the best professors at U of M! I recommend going to his lectures even if his lectures are at 8am. He is very clear and definitely knows what he is teaching.
Really engaging, good at explaining otherwise difficult topics.
I'm enrolled in Coppola's class, but I go to Montgomery's instead. Coppola is a good teacher, but sometimes he moves too fast, and only about 20% of the class can keep up with him. Montgomery, on the other hand, always tries to make sure the majority of the class understands before moving on. He is much clearer in his explanations of concepts.
His lectures were super clear. He's a really good speaker and knows what he's talking about.
Decent teacher, go to open discussion.
Dr. Montgomery is very clear and very helpful. It is clear that he is very educated on the material and knows what he is talking about. The exams are definitely not easy, but if you attend lecture, he definitely helps you understand the concepts more in-depth.
I had Montgomery for Orgo 1 and thought he was great. It was obvious he wanted his students to succeed. His lectures were interesting and easy to follow. He broke down complicated information in a way that was easy to understand. I would recommend him to anyone who has to take this class.
Really organized lectures. Doesn't waste time going over material that wont be on the exams. Makes really nice summary tables and flow charts for some key chapters which was very helpful. He writes neat and at a good pace which means he is easy to keep up with.
excellent lecturer extremely clear and organized with his notes. He tends to go pretty fast, but if you can copy down his notes you barely need to be paying attention. they're that good. he and nolta probably the best professors for orgo 1. clearly a nice guy, wants his students to do well and is pretty funny too you don't need the textbook at all
He explains everything very well. The key is to keep up because everything just builds over time. The course pack is essential. He doesn't have office hours but he is willing to stay after classes and talk or set up times during the weeks. Orgo is a team based class having study groups are helpful since there are no answers to the course pack.
Montgomery was a very good professor. Tests were difficult, but there is not too much he can do about that. Really seems like he wants students to succeed. Last lecture there was a huge round of applause. I highly recommend taking his section if you take orgo 1
Great teacher. Teaches every lecture with clarity. If you just go to the lectures, you'll know everything for the exams. Made me enjoy class and want to pursue more chemistry.
Prof Montgomery explains the material really well, and breaks down what you need to know to actually understand orgo and to pass the tests. He makes a lot of useful flow charts to sort the information you get, but sometimes it seems like he's jumping around and like there's no structure to his lectures, even though he's well prepared with notes.
If you are taking 210 and Dr. Montgomery is on the list, make sure to have him. He has extremely clear notes and he writes down EVERYTHING. You will rarely be lost (if you are attentive and interested)and if you are, the amount of resources is endless. Follow his notes, DO THE ENTIRE COURSEPACK, and utilize the SLC resources and you'll succeed.
I took Orgo with Prof Montgomery and I found his lectures to be straightforward. He did his best to cover as much material ahead of time which allowed me to do more of the course pack ahead of time. His notes can be a little disarrayed, but if you attend lecture, they make perfect sense.
Montgomery was a good teacher, but if you ever got lost like I did, you ended up lost for the rest of the semester. He had a lot of knowledge, that's for sure. Sometimes he was way too in-depth for an orgo 1 class.
Great professor for a class many are less than eager to take (based on the subject's reputation). Class is taught in a way to inspire problem solving rather than only rote memorization. Professor Montgomery is always willing to help answer questions.
Great professor! He was very clear in all of his lectures, and made the course very understandable. Little work was required outside of class in order to pass.
I took Monte for Orgo 1 and Orgo 2. He is very straight forward and his lecture slides contain exactly what you need to know for the exam and not much more. He has a very monotone voice and it is extremely hard to pay attention to him though. Overall, I am glad that I took him though.
Montgomery is extremely hard to pay attention to. I stopped going to lecture about halfway through the semester and went through lectures on my own time and learned just as well, if not better. Chem 215 is a hard course as it is, but the dynamics of this class make it nearly impossible if you don't dedicate your entire life to it.
Montgomery is a good guy, but sometimes his lectures get really long and boring. Don't bother to read the textbook but make sure to do the coursepack. Montgomery knows what he is doing but beware that there will be major parts of the exams that won't be covered until a week or less before the exam.
This man will do anything to help you succeed. Oozes genius and passion for chemistry, and it shows in the way he conducts his lectures. Literally all you need for exams are his notes and doing the coursepack and checking it with other people. Don't be afraid of orgo. I've heard that all of the profs are good but for me he's hands down the best.
Orgo 2 is made to be a tough class, but Monte teaches it really well. His notes are prime and contain all you need to know for the test. Though he is monotone and can go through the material quickly at times, he really knows what he is doing and wants to see his students succeed. (Pro tip: Join an SLC study group for orgo.)
He is so nice and willing to help students. However, his handwriting is a little bit not so good. But his class is worth taking!
Professor Montgomery's lectures always seemed really well planned ahead of time and it was obvious he knew what he was talking about. I also felt that his exams were really fair, and even the more difficult ones were hard but still reasonable based on his lectures. He really cares about his students and I am glad I was able to take Orgo with him.
His lectures were very easy to follow and he would sometimes go on rants about the applications of orgo to drugs/modern uses which was interesting. Do the entire coursepack and join an SLC! I wouldn't waste your time with discussion.
Prof. Montgomery is yet another great lecturer in the Orgo department. His lectures are very thorough and easy to follow along. He cares a lot that his students are learning the material, and answers every question people have with ease and clarity. JOIN AN SLC GROUP for both orgos, I can't stress that enough.
Extremely good lecturer. Genuinely cares about students and gives pointers to what will be on the exam. Our first exam was not reflective of the coursepack or practice exams. Very different. Make sure to review his notes before even if they have zero practice. Know what mechanisms to not memorize. His notes are extremely simple and clear.
Prof Montgomery doesn't have one mean bone in his body. His lectures can be pretty boring but they're easy to follow and he posts a lot of extra supplements on his canvas page. Highly recommend this guy.
Orgo 2 is going to be hard no matter what, but Dr. Montgomery truly cares about the content and the well being of his students. He tries to be as clear as possible and before every exam goes over nuances and little things to try and make sure that students are not being tricked. He is really smart and keeps lectures interesting!
He is simply a fantastic professor. He plans his lectures in a way that is very understandable and makes difficult topics easier to comprehend. Always lets his students know that he is available to talk outside of class. An amazingly genuine human being and knows his chemistry well enough to answer any question with a simple explanation.
I love the way he teaches the class and the passion he has for it. Its just that he stated the four topics that are on our third exam and then puts previous questions from the first exam. Other than that, this guy is really good.
His teaching his fantastic. He just compiles the coursepack that is SO DIFFERENT for every one of his exams that it was ridiculous. They help but study the lecture notes to do well
Nicest guy in the entire world. Lectures can get a little boring, but you can tell he really cares about the material and will do anything to make sure students feel prepared for the exams. If you really work the coursepack you will be 100% fine for his exams. Wastes time in lecture occasionally, but not really to your detriment. Highly recommend.
Dr. Montgomery is a truly great guy. His lecture notes are very clear and organized. He does a great job of breaking down concepts and connecting them together, and he is always glad to help. His notes and old practice exams really helped me understand the material. Great prof!
I went into Orgo 2 a bit worried about the difficulty, but Professor Montgomery was amazing at helping break down complicated concepts into ideas that were easy to digest. His lectures are very informative and thoroughly explain the material. His exams are also very fair and comprehensive. I would highly recommend him for anyone taking this course.
Dr. Montgomery was a great professor for Orgo I and I really enjoyed his lectures. His notes are very clear and he also posts notes/lecture recordings which help if you need to revisit the material. The class itself is pretty strenuous (of course, its Orgo) but if youre prepared to work hard his lectures are extremely helpful for doing well!
Dr. Montgomery might be a little monotone but he explains everything to the extent that's needed and he is happy to answer any questions that may arise. Orgo 1 Is a tough class overall but he is a very good teacher.
Dr. Montgomery is a great person. This was his first time teaching CHEM215H and he completely changed the course. He made the quizzes harder to challenge us (they are supposed to be free points for this course). His exams were pretty much only about synthesizing random molecules. I would say his exams are about twice the difficulty of older exams.
Dr. Montgomery is a great person and a great chemist, but this was his first time teaching CHEM 215HH and the course was completely different from the course I signed up to take. The Friday quizzes that were supposed to be easy points required as much studying as an exam to do well. The exams focused on synthesizing molecules exclusively.
Really sweet guy, I had him for 210, then decided to take 215 HH partially so I could be in his class again. Cares about his students, open to questions, made it a point to know us by name. Made the transition to zoom at the end of winter 2020 as smooth as possible. He can be hard to reach via email at times, but overall 10/10 recommend.
Prof. Montgomery was a great instructor for CHEM210. He was extremely knowledgeable on the material and answered questions really effectively. He genuinely cares about students success and teaches the material very well. I would take him for every chemistry course if I could.
Overall great teaching. Although classes were online and he used videos from previous years, the notes and content was still in depth and relevant enough to do well in the class. Office hours were great to attend and really reinforce content. Highly recommend office hours.
Fantastic lecturerpassionate, friendly, incredibly knowledgeable. I had him last year and he is still my favorite professor at U-M. I've considered taking more O-Chem classes / research in O-Chem because I loved his lectures so much. Don't be scared of chemistrythis department is excellent and they want you to succeed!
John explained the content extremely well. He is very precise and extremely knowledgeable. I really appreciated the pace and flow of his lectures. He clearly knows what he is talking about and makes it easy for students to learn very complicated material. I would HIGHLY recommend taking his orgo 1 and 2 classes.
Very good professor. I would highly recommend the honors section of 215 that he teaches. He grades fairly and gives opportunities for recovery and is always incredibly passionate about chemistry. He also knew everyone's names and is always very respectful of his students.
I love John. 10/10 would recommend.
exams were unfortunately just on synthesis; HARD FRI quizzes, b/c we could use all resources, except for the staff; sick and tired of having to wait 'til late THUR nights to get the answers in the GC; was so excited for the HH part and the small class size, but alas. should've taken the reg sec, and gotten a better grade there (A- in orgo 1).
He is passionate about what he teaches, but the lectures were very theoretical and hard to follow. I often only connected the dots on concepts a few days before the exam. He is very caring about his students and willing to help - just make sure to always go to the lectures, review notes, and practice a lot. SSG section was a lot of work.
Professor Montgomery is a good professor, he explains everything well and tries to make an effort to make sure everyone understands concepts. He does move relatively quickly and you must come to lecture and pay attention to keep up. The exams are very difficult and he will put very difficult problems on there, but grades more leniently on those
During the fall semester he is the best professor! Take him!
MY GOAT!!!! I loved Professor Montgomery's lectures. He's also always willing to stay after class and help students with questions. I've been at post-class Q&A sections - not even designated office hours - that've gone as long as 30 minutes. Definitely recommend! He made Orgo 1 not even that bad!
Professor Montgomery is extremely kind and always wants to help students succeed. He's always happy to answer questions after class and during office hours, and never seems burdened by them. He is open to feedback and always tries to improve his lectures. He's an excellent professor, and it was a joy to have him.
Zero support structure, the course is designed to overwhelm college students with information and redundant resources. Students are better off reading the textbook since lectures only include 70% of course content. The path to success in this course is not obvious and leaves many kids putting in suitable hours but getting bad grades.
Nice guy. I felt like he cared about his students
Orgo is a pretty tough class, but Dr. Montgomery makes an effort to get to know students and really wants to help. He asked for feedback throughout the course and actually implemented what people said. Sometimes his explanations for questions could get a bit wordy/confusing, but he is always re-explains if you don't get it. Very sweet guy.
Loved Montgomery as a person; he seemed very nice and excited about orgo. Unfortunately, his explanations on things were lacking in many ways. He often explains things very vaguely without going through the thought processes and HOW he gets to certain conclusions. Felt as though he expected students to have the same level of understanding as him.
Super nice guy, was always willing to help but the lectures weren't very helpful. I had to mostly teach myself and talk to him after class with questions to figure it out. I recommend watching Tuttle's videos and doing as many practice questions as possible. Prioritize practice questions over reading !!
He seemed like a caring, sweet guy, but his lectures were not very helpful, and 3/4 of the class stopped going. Felt like Montgomery expected us to already know it and never explained things very well, and left out key info. Class in general, especially exams, are hard. Cannot stress this enough: DO NOT FALL BEHIND AND DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS!!!
