Awsome teacher...finds away to make something as dull as chemistry exciting once in a while.
nice guy, great demonstrations, great lecturer
Good professor at teaching chemistry. Tough class if you haven't taken AP Chem.
great leactures
I loved his demos. Loved his personality. Did not like WebCt HWK. It was a constant duty, and it was difficult.
he is fun and nice!
Class was hard, but Prof. made it interesting. Real nice guy, but be prepared to put in the hours to learn the course material.
I didn't have AP Chem in high school but as able to get an A with some work. And part of that grade is due to the fact he is a great teacher. Best for 109.
Teaches difficult subjects, but does an excellent job.
I don't really know... didn't have to go to lecture
best 109 teacher, but course is still difficult. It's possible to get an AB without doing much work, but i highly recommend keeping up with all the assigned problems even though they are not graded because those problems are very similar to the exam ?
Hard, hard class. Great professor! Made the class enjoyable, which is difficult to do.
Awesome, Just awesome
This is such an amazing class. I took it late in my chem learning career and it made so much sense. I learned so much. Fun demos, cool guy, its a total treat
Prof. Moore is great! He does a wonderful job of explaining some pretty difficult material, and is very nice. In 4 semesters he is my favorite prof. than i have had.
Tough tests, class moves fast, good at teaching
Good professor, if you have your choice take him! He makes it interesting and actually has a sense of humor.
Good Professor
excellent professor. very clear during lectures
he was a great professor but the class was very difficult. tests are really hard w/ no curve. favorite teacher thus far
good, but has hard tests
Prof. Moore is an excellent lecturer and his demos will keep you forever interested. Outside of class, he will always find time to help you when you need it. If you take Chemistry, make sure you register for class with Moore.
So, his lectures are okay - he is fairly clear when explaining what he chooses to explain. The class is pretty difficult though and not organized well. In discussion you do challenge problems once a week and they never are on materioal you have covered in lecture or in the assigned reading.
Not a fan of Mr. Moore. The class is extremely difficult and the tests are hell.
Moore is great.. test are hard.. office hours are awesome... only thing i can say that you sould do ... always attend the lectures... i missed many and am doing ok becuase the few time i had a question he explained everythign to me in the office hours... still a hard course to be sure but hes great
Fun class!!!!
Hard class, period. Lecture is boring, but important. Notes online make skipping tempting, but it will hurt you. Tests are incredibly hard, but you can bulk up your grade with lab & discussion scores. Moore will give help if asked. My advice- ask!
Difficult class - much responsibility is placed upon the student as lectures don't cover all material on exams. Labs are poorly organized and a term paper is required. Moore, however, is very approachable and a likeable guy.
Enjoyed his lectures. They were interesting. Extremely hard tests, but lab and discussion sections make up for it. There is a curve at the very end, but make sure to try ALL semester because initially, your grade is determined by the number of points you earn.
Not particularly exciting lecturer, but I feel he covers the info well and is a very friendly and approachable professor. I really don't know how someone couldn't like the guy. Oh wait, yes I do. His tests are a ****. Class avg = 70, 66, and 64 for our midterms. Curve will be applied.
The exams are hard...the contents are rather odd..maybe since it's 2 sem in 1..lot's of cool experiments in class...likes to blow up things in class..very approachable..
He taught hard classes, but he really helped ou out. Knew his stuff and was always there to help outside of lecture. Also, he got everyone involved. BEST HAND WRITING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!

Great Teacher! I loved him!
greatest chemisty prof. I have ever had! lots of cool experiments...and its the only class that i havnt skipped yet! u absolutely need not take any mountain dew before class even though it is a 8:50 class.
Lectures sometimes boring, but lots of experiments to wake you up. The guy has great handwriting! Tough material, but the best chem prof at Madison.
Prof. Moore is an absolutely amazing professor. He is clear with class expectations and progress. He is also an amazing lecturer. As someone who is a prospective Chem major, Prof. Moore did very good things to foster it. With great demonstrations and interesting lectures, I would highly recommend him.
He was very helpful and his lectures were very intesting. It's a really tough class, but it was worth it.
His lectures were very organized and clear. He has the neatest handwriting I have ever seen and writes down almost every thing he says so its really easy to take notes. The tests aren't very hard because there is no curve. Work hard on the homework and labs and it is easy to do well. A LOT of work but DEFINETILY worth it.
He's a nice guy and a good teacher but the class is hard. If you get a hard TA your labs will be hell, overall it is a real hard class, if you didn't have ap chem in high school, (and probably even if you did) the class will take over your life and make it hell
He is a very nice man. He has a ton of experience teaching chemistry so his methods are pretty organized. He also wrote the textbook you use for his class...so you should probably read it! This class is really HARD!!! He expects a lot out of his students, but he is a reasonable grader.
Moore is a very good teacher. He writes everything on the board and explains the concepts well. He also does several quick demonstations each day to aid in his lecture. The class overall is somewhat difficult. Multiple years of Chem in highschool help.
This class was hard. A lot harder than I expected. It is managable though. The tests are really hard and are nothing like what you are told to study.
Very difficult exams, but lectures are well outlined and very understandable. Very enjoyable overall.
Really nice guy, with good demos. Keeps the class entertained most of the time. Only downside was the difficulty of exams.
Kept class interesting and easy to follow
He's a nice guy and I guess a good teacher, but this is an incredibly hard class. Also, if you are pre-med, don't take 109 because you'll still have to take another chem course like analytical or inorganic. You're much better off taking 103-104.
Very good professor. Very clear speaker and neatest handwriting of any professor. Tests are hard, but not ridiculous. Lectures are usually entertaining and helpful. Tough class though. Cover a lot of material in one semester. Honors project is stupid, but an easy A for an assignment. Great professor, very approachable. Take him.
Nice guy, but he teaches straight out of the book, especially since he wrote it. His exams are difficult and you will definitely see things on there that you have never seen before, which sucks because the exams are not curved. If you are pre-med, take 103-104 instead...otherwise you'll have to take Analytical Chemistry.
Knows what he's talking about and explains it well but Chem 109H is a hard class. You NEED to study for the tests!
Tries to keep lecture intestering with fun experiments, but the exams are really hard. The exams are made by the TA's so really, the exams vary from year to year. There's always bound to be one question where a TA was trying too hard and they make it too difficult or over-ambigious.
cool demos, lecture is well organized, he explains them well, you can understand him perfectly, and he answers email!!
He was a really good lecturer, but you have to do a lot of outside work to keep up with the class. He loves to use outside sources and loves to make you do them too, so the workload is intense. But I definitely suggest it because you'll come out of the class 10x smarter than those who took the 103-104 sequence
Excellent lecturer. He does a lot of demonstrations, which keep class interesting. There is a good amount of work involved and exams are pretty tough. Don't expect to do well if you're not willing to put in the work. But, I would definitely recommend him- you come out having learned a lot.
I wish I had a different prof. He talks straight out of the book, which he wrote. A few times in lecture, he screwed up formulas and definitions. He does do interesting demos during lecture, but they have no impact on exams or homework. Homework is entirely online and is the worst setup ever. Exams are rough and evil!
lectures are incredibly hard to stay awake in because he speaks in monotone. However, he is very intelligent and fun with the demos. He is one of the professors that truly enjoys interacting with the students. You HAVE TO read the book and do additional exercises on the side to keep up. Take him if others are filled up b.c. honors = hard curve.
The professor truly wants you to understand the fundamentals of chemistry. Upon which you can build upon as you take higher level courses.Honors project is easy points so definitely take the class for honors. Overall great personality and if you want to get an A be involved in discussions and ask for help the moment you get lost. Don't procrastinat
Exams were extremely hard. Make sure you read the book and know it like the back of your hand!
His exams are extremely hard and his lectures do not cover most of what is on them. His demos do not help and the labs for the class are ridiculously long and hard. If you want to lower you GPA or get kicked in the b@lls then take this class. He will help on simple questions but will only direct you to better ways of answering your questions.
he's old, has a bald spot, and does cool demos. he does not speak in monotone or is boring like the dumbass claims below, who obviously doesn't understand the class at all. take his class it's an easy A if you've taken AP chem because it's 75% old material.
Prof JMoore obviously puts his heart and soul into this class. He loves Gen Chem. His demonstrations were amusing but sometimes his lectures were a little dull. I hated the online textbook (use the hardcover, it's much better) and wished the homework were longer, with more problems to reflect test questions.
He's very amusing when doing the demonstrations. I love his lectures although sometimes it can be a little boring. He's good at explaining the concepts and willing to help when you have questions. I think his exams are reasonable, but you still need to study hard for them.
Good professor. You can tell he's been doing this for a long time. Sometimes his lectures can be a bit boring though. Exams could be pretty difficult.
Sweetest man, and he cares about students! Take the online HW/quizzes seriously, they're grade boosters! You do them at your leisure and with materials, so go over them with your TA. His lecture covers what he wants to cover, so you should read the book. His exams were tough (averages of D,C,C) but fair. Study hard and be above the average for an A
Nice prof!!!The class is extremely interesting. He likes to dance...
His lectures were pretty dull, though his demonstrations were always interesting, and he has a great sense of humor. You can also tell that he respects his student. The coursework is pretty difficult, though grading isn't so bad as to make this a grade-killer.
This was the greatest professor! I had a lot of fun in his class! Lots of explosions!!
Awesome professor. Really cares about how students perform in the class. Downside was lectures are pretty much identical to the reading because he wrote the textbook so it was always tempting to skip.
Theres lots of cool explosions and demonstrations in lecture. Professor Moore cares about his students and really tries to help you out. Do well on the hmwk, labs, and quizzes, becuase they can boost your grade a lot! Its a difficult class that runs really fast, so put a good amount of time into it studying. The curve at the end helps too.
Lectures were extremely dull and boring except when he did some explosions. But he is a friendly helpful one and he loves to dance!
He is a TERRIBLE lecturer. I know there is a lot of material and it is quite dull, but other professors are just better at explaining. He does have some fun demos and his dancing is hilarious, but as far as teaching the material i think he did a poor job.
Prof Moore is one of the nicest teachers at UW-Madison. He knows his stuff, and is able to teach it to you well. Tests are very straight-forward, and pretty fair. Lectures were boring sometimes, but that's chemistry. Overall great guy, so glad I took him for 104.
SUPER hard class but a REALLY GOOD professor. Devotes fridays to answering questions and I really suggest you email him any questions you have and he will answer them. You have to go to pretty much every lecture, no slides are posted online. It's technically not necessary to read the book but it can really help with homework and clarifying
Lectures were sometimes boring but that is the nature of the material he covers, he did a lot to make it enjoyable such as dancing, lots of fun demos, and he was always cracking jokes. Homework and exams were fair, one of the best professors I've had here.
A pretty good professor. His lectures were okay, a lot of times it was hard to keep focused because it got dull (and I like chemistry). Do well on online hws/quizzes, they really add up. The midterms were all relatively easy but the final seemed to be harder. I used the Kotz textbook which was helpful. An A is definitely attainable.
I found the lectures very boring to be honest and the exams were very difficult.
Professor Moore is a funny old guy who enjoys doing science experiments off the cuff in front of lecture. He's great when it comes to day to day lecture (although some can get rather boring and drag on), but when it's test time, watch out. They are super hard if you do not study well enough. But, study hard and do well in lab to get at least a B
Prof Moore was the best! He was great when you emailed him questions, and always had jokes and demos to keep lectures interesting! Exams were tough only if you don't pay attention to his hilarious lectures!! LOVE JW MOORE!
I will keep it short: 1) Very nice guy 2) Very tough class in my opinion a definition of a weed-out class 3) Very nice guy
Super nice professor and very approachable. Reading the textbook is a must because he only breezes over the reading in lecture. Tests were fair but still hard, even with a notecard. He wants his students to learn, not memorize (provides equations and everything for exams). Would recommended to anyone who took AP Chem. (Try to stay up in lecture).
Professor Moore has desire to help his students learn. He is a great guy and you will not have any problems with him. Easily approachable during office hours and promptly responds to questions through email. Lecture gets boring, but if you understand what he is talking about they are helpful. DO THE READING of assigned sections BEFORE lecture.
The class is tough but he doesn't try to make it worse. Cares that his students learn the material above all. If you are truly interested in chem he is a good professor. If you're forced to take this class he makes it the most managable.
Absolutely the WORST teacher I have ever had and ever will have. Very nice man and you can tell he loves chemistry, but he doesn't actually feel the need to teach it. Lectures are entirely made up of random demos, which he expects you to know (about 10 from every lecture)details about for exams. Worthless as a teacher.
Really awesome teacher. You need to work hard in this class to get a good grade, but he really cares about making sure you understand the material. He keeps class interesting with a ton of demos. Tests are difficult but manageable because he provides a study guide for each exam.
He is understandable but sooo boring. Also, he talks kind of like Kermit the Frog, which can get irritating. Still, he makes concepts pretty clear. He wrote the textbook, but offers an online one for free, so that's pretty nice (they have different content though).
Really nice guy who makes the material pretty easy. His lectures are very similar to the book, but the book is a must. Pay attention to the details and it makes the homeworks and challenge quizzes doable. The exams are quite tough though. Be sure to take advantage of the note card.
Professor Moore knows everything that he is talking about. I have taken only one year of high school Chem and finished with an A in the class. However, you need to basically memorize the book in order to get an A. Labs and hw aren't bad, and tests are challenging.
While the class itself is tough, Professor Moore actually makes it bearable. It's possible to get a good grade in this class while sleeping through a few lectures as long as you do the work, take the homeworks seriously, and get lucky in the TA lottery.
Professor Moore is a really nice teacher. He is very good at explaining the materials in a rather clear way.My favorite part in this course is when he exploded the baloons. :)
Professor Moore is a very nice guy and his love for chemistry is pretty obvious. Lectures can get really boring, though, and tests are extremely challenging. Homework is time consuming, but you get multiple tries.
Relatively good professor. Not a huge fan of his teaching style. Rather then teach out of the textbook, he instead just gives a lot of demos and doesn't write much on the board so you have to take notes on what he says. Ended up having to teach myself a lot by using the textbook
Great professor! Truly loves Chemistry, and really wants his students to do well. Exams are fairly difficult, but go into his office hours and he will consider regrades/curves. Definitely learn a lot more in depth about chem from him. Very sweet man.
John Moore is a really nice guy, but he's an extremely boring lecturer. The overall course is challenging, but that should be expected. The tests weren't too bad as long as you studied a lot.
He teaches students to think critically and exams are quite easy and straightforward.
Professor Moore is a great teacher. Although, the lectures can get kind of boring so drink coffee ahead of time! My favorite part is when he does demos during class. He relates them to what we're discussing in lecture. A very fast paced class with labs every week. The tests can get really hard so spend a lot of time studying and start early!!
Moore is an interesting Prof. I couldn't focus much as Chem 109 is basically AP Chem in 1 semester, so it was almost all review. He has occasional demos which makes class more interesting. Tests are hard and require studying. He gives you a note card so its not awful. Tries to make class interesting, but if you've taken AP, it will be boring.
Moore is the man, when it comes to chemistry. He is very excited to teach and it is clear he cares about the students. Also, his corny jokes are the best!
If you did not take AP Chem in High School, the pace of this course will be fairly challenging. The tests are not curved, but grades are adjusted (very) slightly at the end. Prof Moore is a really cool guy, but his lectures can get a little boring at times. If you're considering taking this class, definitely try to get him as your professor.
He's a older guy who really loves chemistry and it shows through his teaching. He makes lectures fun with a cool demo almost every day. I don't feel like I learn a lot from lecture but they are worth going to.
He is a good teacher, but his voice can put students to sleep. If you can stay awake and stay focused you will learn unbelievable amounts of chemistry. He does lot of cool demos which help.
Moore is an awesome professor and person. Very entertaining during class and funny. His voice can often times put you to sleep, but his demonstrations always wake you up. Tests are hard and there is a lot of work for the class, but it's an awesome course.
Really nice man, very willing to help. He has put a lot of effort into the course and it shows. It's a difficult class but if you apply yourself you'll gain a great depth in Chem. Tests are difficult. I recommend doing the study questions and practice tests on Moodle. Take the online homework seriously, it helps a lot with your understanding.
I came to this class with little prior Chemistry, but Professor Moore made the material interesting and easy to understand. This is a difficult class, and tests are hard, but if you apply yourself, you can get a good grade.
Explains concepts well, if you can stand the more boring parts of his lectures. His lectures are filled with demos in an attempt to keep things interesting, but when he actually explains concepts it's quite boring to listen to. Pretty cool halloween and christmas demos though. (*Professor walks in surrounded by fog with a wizard costume)
If you can stay awake despite his monotone voice his lectures are pretty interesting. His exams required effort, but actual good scores (not just good curved) weren't impossible if you studied the practice exams.
Moore did a great job keeping me focused in class. He knows when his topics are getting boring, and he tries to add as many demos as possible, making it much easier to pay attention. Great professor, I would definitely recommend him.
Wow this class is challenging. Be prepared to work very hard if you want an A. It's possible, but it is very difficult. Lectures are a hit or miss. You either learn really important stuff that will show up on the exams, or you will waste an entire period learning absolutely nothing useful. Moore is adorable though. He tries to keep it interesting.
A truly outstanding instructor and one that I think only comes around once in a generation. Dr. Moore was well-prepared, had beautiful penmanship, had simple exams and was super helpful. He can be funny and is such a sweet man. Love this guy!!!
Great professor for an intro chem class. Plenty of demos and he really wants his students to learn chemistry. Tests are a bit difficult, but homework and practice tests help a lot.
Professor Moore is a super nice person. However, as a professor not so good. His lectures are boring and can be confusing, he does a lot of experiments which are cool, but don't always help you understand what he's talking about. His test are hard and he will test you on stuff that you didn't actually use(learn). Hope you get a good TA!
He is an extremely boring lecturer. He is very very smart, but has a hard time making lectures interesting. Tests are hard but fair. If you study you will do just fine. All notes are online, so you don't have to go to lecture.
Lectures were long and boring, but it's chemistry so that's expected. He explained very complicated material simply which helped a lot. The exams were very difficult and averages were 64%. He says he doesn't curve the class but he ended up curving it a little bit in the end to compensate for the exam grades. Lab and weekly homework boosts grade
Very nice guy, but lectures seem very long. Uses examples to explain most concepts, which can be confusing at times. Your TA will be your best friend for this class, so make sure to attend discussion.
Professor Moore is honestly the best professor the chem department has. He was constantly doing demos and halloween with him is a treat! Chemistry can be hard but he does the best to explain the concepts clearly. His exams are straight forward if you study the materials. I would recommend taking a class with him.
Professor Moore is an amazing chem professor. He writes big enough that you can actually read it form the back of the lecture hall. He is very good at teaching and uses lots of demos but his lectures can be long. The Halloween and Christmas experiments are fun and a good review of everything you should have learned. Would recommend this professor
He wrote the textbook and knows what he's talking about. Other than the course itself being fast paced and difficult, he's a fantastic professor.
Moore really knows what he's talking about, but his lectures do get a bit boring. He tries to keep them fun with demos and nerdy chemistry jokes. He's a really sweet guy who cares a lot about the success of his students.
Very good teacher indeed. His lectures do tend to get a bit boring though. His experiments are very fun and Halloween was extreme with him. Very sweet and friendly. Answered questions personally after classes. Overall, really a good professor with a tough class.
Professor Moore is an awesome professor - highly knowledgeable and very willing to offer help. He's super approachable during office hours and explains things very thoroughly. The class itself, however, is quite hard and definitely took up the majority of my time during the semester. Study from past/sample exams and do the book problems.
Professor Moore is a great teacher and very knowledgable about the material. Best thing to do with understanding the material is to read the textbook and then go to lecture it makes everything more clear. The tests are hard and you have to study a lot for this class. I spent 90% of my time on Chemistry.
I took AP Chem before Chem 109, and it definitely helped in understanding the material. Lectures may not be the most interesting all the time, but he lays out what you need to know very clearly, and the TAs take lecture notes that are available online after class. Use the Piazza forum- Moore often answers questions himself in a very timely manner!
Professor Moore speaks clearly and has beautiful handwriting. The class will be much easier if you read the textbook before lectures, but it makes you feel like you are gaining little from the lectures. Our class loved him, and by the end of the semester, many wished he was their grandpa with his jokes and unbeatable charm.
Professor Moore is a great professor with about 5 demos per class period. He is always well prepared, organized, and has clear grading criteria. The class and workload is overwhelming at first, but stick with it, its worth it. Don't get too worried about your grade as there is a huge curve at the end of the course.
Chem109 was my favorite class first semester and a lot of that can be attributed to Professor Moore, he was hands down the best prof I had.
John Moore is my hero. I would highly recommend taking his class. You will learn to love him, and it's not a hard A if you put the work in.
Very glad I had Moore for Chem 109. He's an older guy, but a great professor with incredible handwriting, and you can tell he definitely has the respect of all his students. The tests are difficult, so you need to put forth the effort in this class to end up with a good grade. There is a pretty generous curve at the end, though.
Lectures were always interesting. He gave great demonstrations and was easy to understand. Best chem prof I ever had.
Great Professor overall. I have no complaints about his teaching style. He was very clear and organized. He has a dad-joke sense of humor. The demos during class were pretty great all semester.
Great lectures, cares for all students, and is completely fair. You can make it through chem 109 as long as you put in the effort. If you suck at chem, just go to office hours and actually read the book.
Prof Moore is very clear in his lectures. He is also very willing to help you out if you have questions or need clarification. It is a big class and hard to teach but Prof Moore did a great job! His tests are challenging but not impossible. Just pay attention to book and material and you will be fine in his class!
Chem 109: Great professor. Very understandable and funny. He writes the textbook. Read the textbook and do the homework and you'll get a B. Tough class but if work is put in it is doable. Tips: Take good lecture notes, read textbook, do well in lab to boost your grade.
Professor Moore is probably the best professor I've had here. The lectures are super clear and organized, and he does enough demos to keep them interesting and fun. The exams can be challenging and require you to think somewhat outside of the box, but he makes the class really enjoyable.
This class was super tough, but Prof. Moore really is a wonderful professor. He genuinely cares about your learning, and is very knowledgeable and willing to help if you ask for it. I would highly recommend not taking this course unless you have taken AP Chem. I can't imagine someone keeping up with the material without previous exposure.
Moore obviously really cares about teaching. He really wants you to learn the information and enjoy the class. Despite liking him as a person, he seems a little disconnected with students on the amount of work he assigns. This class takes a TON of time. Weekly lab reports, tutorials, and problem sets are a lot to manage.
Prof Moore is a very nice person and it's clear that he's very passionate about what he teaches. He makes good use of demos which are interesting. The biggest flaw is how the course is laid out because it's not taught well. Trying to figure out what to write for lab reports is very hard. Exams are hard and aren't relevant to class material.
There are lots to do for this class. We had weekly lab reports (typed, 5-6 pages), problem sets and occasional online chem tutors too. The grading criteria were clear, and tests were fair as long as you participated in class and did the homework. One thing I really didn't like was the CPR cuz people are unnecessarily brutal to get your scores lower
