he is much more enjoyable then some of the other teachers, and he is very good at helping you learn to right better. there is a lot of work in this class, but he is a great teacher to do it with.
he is nice, but possibly the most boring individual to ever walk the earth
He makes you do a fair amount of work, but he is helpful. If you make the effort you will learn. We had 4 essays, a research paper, and a comprehensive journal.
Worst teacher ever. Not helpful, bored, looks tired all the time.
Good teacher, though fairly difficult. If you're a good writer, you'll like this class. If not, you'll struggle. Pay attention to his lectures (and the movies), read the book. If you do that, you should do fine on the tests. Has a genuine love for film.

He was the worst teacher Ive had In a long time. I agree with some other students, he seemed exahusted when he appeared to class, didnt care about anyone in the class. Didnt know what he was talking about, wow worse teacher ever. please fire him now
This guy was so ablivious to what he was talking about. Really boring, to the point person that shouldnt be teaching if he doesnt apper to show interest.
This guy is a complete and utter moron. The worst instructor I think I have ever had. I turned in a paper and he failed it. I had a different instructor evaluate the same paper and was told it was an A paper. What a loser!
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH PLEASE AND I REPEAT PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF NOW WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE CHANCE YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING FROM THIS MAN YOU WILL NOT LOOK FORWARD TO HIS CLASS EVER YOU WILL ACTUALLY DREAD IT!!! BORING RUDE AND... WELL LETS JUST SAY NOT VERY WELL INFORMED! YOU ARE BETTER OFF TAKING P.E. AT LEAST YOU WON'T FALL ASLEEP!
OMG. SO BORING. I will forever hate English class....he is a fun sucker. Aside from the fact that he BS's at least 50% of the crap he has the class do.
I do not know what people are complaining about. Comapred to most English 1ah Instructors he is much easier. Most of these people are mad because they disaggre with his grading and it is supposed to be difficult, it is English 1A and it is and honor class.
Very nice person. he was kind and patient even with students who didn't deserve it. He gave extra credit so if something went wrong unexpectedly with the film, it gave some cushion. really nice guy, fun hands on class, would recomend it to those interested in subject adn who are willing to do some work. :)
He does not grade papers right. I thought I deserved higher grades than what I recieved. He was so boring and never really taught us anything.
Boring his voice puts you to sleep, and when you ask him a question he never gives you an answer.
Dr. Moses was a very good teacher, he was patient and fair, and i dont know what all this about his grading is about because i thought he graded well, just because he grades tough doesnt mean he grades bad. He does talk a lot, in fact most of his class time is him talking. but he is overall a nice, good professor.
Great professor! I've heard a lot of complaints about his grading but I though he graded honestly. He gives great comments and is respectful of others opinions. He's President of Fresno Filmworks too!
I think he enjoyed teaching this class more than the students in the class. Graded fairly, not much work when it comes to journals & exams. Discusses the films we watched. Just understand that u can't go into this class writing about the plot, u have to explore the values a film represents. READ the textbook because he discusses the readings too.
Good Teacher. Reading is recommended and tests are a mix of excerpts and essay. Bring your "A" game or you will get trampled.
The class wasn't hard, but it was extremely boring. He drones on a lot. Seemed impossible to get an A on a paper, but he gives extra credit and points through various other assignments, so I ended up with an A. We had to do reading and writing journals which seemed like a complete and annoying waste of time, but you'll be thankful for the points.
Class is very difficult due to the lack of teacher instruction and high expectations from him. The class i took was short term so we met twice a week for three hours. He would usually talk for at least an hours, sometimes up to an hour and a half. Unless you have a love for film, i wouldn't talk this class. It's def passable but not fun, oreasy
Hippie
Seemed impossible to get an A on any paper... He's a bit biased on grading. Although its tough, he likes his paper a certain way, so it was a bit unfair that he doesn't take into consideration other things when grading. He spends an entire class time talking and rambling. =[
this teacher is soo boring it not even funny!!! pretty much its paper after paper and he likes them done a certain way so you have to learn exactly how he likes them or you will not do good on the essays! I would not recommend this guy to teach anything to anyone!!
Requires alot of peer editing and peer work, but doesn't work with you directly. Talks in general alot about assignments. Basically you will write paper after paper, the only good thing is that you don't have any tests in the class. He grades fairly difficultly and expects alot out of you if your in his honors class. If you want a good grade you'll deff have to work hard for it
A LOT of papers to write but it's beneficial because you get to learn and practice your writing skills. He grades your papers and the overall class very FAIRLY. He's real honest about his opinions on your paper and how he grades. He rarely gives A's on papers but even though you get all B's on your papers you can get an A in the class
Contrary to the aforementioned comments, Moses is not a horrible teacher but his classes ARE quite challenging. His tests are a little bit ridiculous but I did poorly on both tests and decently on both papers and came out of the class with a B. Do ALL the journals and study HARD (the tests are basically memorization, author to work). You'll survive
This class consists of multiple assignments. There's a lot of textbook reading towards teh beginning of the semester, there's journals, multiple writing assingments, as well as peer-review workshops. It's not an easy course; it's hard. But, if you're willing to stay in the class and do the work, by the end of the course, you'll be grateful you did.
Moses seems to live and breathe film. You cannot get through this class without a devout interest in film. It's important to know he's an English instructor as well, the class involves lots of writing and he has high standards so revise everything.
He cares. What do you want from a teacher? He cares and is qualified. The best example I can put forth of a man whose cup is half full. He could have slaughtered me, but instead he supported me. If you put forth the effort so will John Moses.
Nice and fair
Takes a general ed class way to serious. Expects that all his students want to major in film.
horrible professor. expects a lot from you. a lot of writing. never lets you leave early. a lot of work. tests are very difficult. I DO NOT recommend this class...
1. BORED!!!! 2. NOT CLEAR on how he really wants you to do the work. 3. HIGHLY don't require you taking this class. One of the hardest and bored class ever taken at city.
He IS very boring all he does is talk and shows movies, but hey that's better then taking unexpected quizzes. If you dont like to watch fils then dont take it. I like to sit and watch movies all day.
Show him you have some interest in film and it goes a long way. Contributing to discussions is likely to grant you some leeway on your papers; he will remember you. For exams, memorize character names, directors, movements, and "mise-en-scene" . Don't insult the films he shows, criticism is okay, but it must be analysis rather than opinion.
This class is pretty hard. He's very specific, and detail oriented when it comes to essays and papers. As long as you read the book, and attend class to watch the films you should be able to get a A, maybe. If its not what he wants to read or hear, he won't give you a great grade.
This course is not that hard if you do the work. How hard is it to write a journal on a movie or write a paper? It is easy and the tests are not that hard either. It can be boring because it is film history. I recommend him. If someone fails this course it is because they did not put the work into it not because of his teaching ability
Mr. Moses will remember you; he will take the class a bit serious.Definitely read the book about the films you will see (listed on syllabus). He makes you write a lot but make sure to at least seem interested. Do not procrastinate in the Journals he assigns for the films.
Great teacher, great movies to keep you entertained. He does have you write quite a bit but very easy if you pay attention to the movies. Tests are not too bad but you will have to study a bit from your notes. I don't think I opened the book more than 4 times throughout the class
Lots of writing & text reading in this course. Screenings in class, you are to write 300-500 words base on that film. No study guide for midterm or finals, & within both exam, there is also an essay question. Essay has to be structured modernly with intro, thesis, & body. Only 1hr & 30 min for entire exam. Instructor not helpful.
He is hard and expects a lot out of his students. He loves to talk, but he expects the students to give him feed back. A lot of writing and journaling, but over all he is a good instructor. If your a serious person, take his class, but if your there because it is a prerequisite, then give it up for the next one in line.
I don't not recommend this class if you like movies. Only if your really inspired and what to major in it. Don't take it just because it sounds interesting like I did.
For the journals, he uses letter grades rather than points which makes it confusing so I can't even estimate my grade and when I asked him about my grade, he just estimated in his head. I don't recommend him, I do not like his teaching style and this is coming from a student that has taken a Film 1 course at FCC before and passed with a high B.
Dr. Moses is one of the most helpful professors I have had at Fresno City. He's a tough grader but gives you great feedback that will help you in the long run. He goes step by step with you on each assignment and you have to purposely miss assignment dates to fail this class.
He is very passionate about film, however if you are not there is a high chance you will not enjoy this class. You need to read the book in order to understand all the concepts because he can be very vague in lecture. He did come across as quite condescending at times, but if you put in the effort you'll pass. Not the best film class I've taken.
The class isn't that hard if you pay attention in class. I took his Engl. 1A class and yes it was challenging at times, especially the last essay, but it's a good class. His grading isn't super tough. He expects you to participate in class discussions and make sure to go to the workshops. and WRITE IN YOUR JOURNALS
Very unclear and unstable approach to dispersing information.
Hated this class. I don't recommend this professor to anyone. He was gone toward the end of the semester a lot due to health issues, which was not a problem. The problem was his daughter did a lot of the grading for him. That doesn't sit well with me. He is very rude to other students. Expects too much. Don't take unless this is a career goal.
We didn't require us to do journals, but we were kind of behind because his over-extended lectures took up half the class time. At times, he forgot to clarify certain subjects which made some of the test questions confusing. Our was suppose to three major essays, but we only ended up to two because he was sick towards the end of the semester.
Overall, he isn't the worst teacher but it seems like he just likes to hear himself talk about film than he is actually there for the students. Also, his grading is a bit tedious. He's not unfair but for a three hour class he only gave one 10 minute break.
He was tough Professor. I do not recommend for student to take him, especially if you are not interested in this specific topic.
Hardest film instructor at FCC.
Toughest class I have every taken. Not clear and has high expectations.
The professor knows what he's talking about so much so that he's not teacher. He enjoys sharing his knowledge on the film but not so much if the students can follow since he can be pretty vague. My older sister has had him in the past and I think he usually tends to have issues with students.
This class was interesting but TOUGH! I enjoyed the class but was worried about my grade the entire time. Lots of reading and writing. He grades pretty tough but gives good feedback. Do not skip class! Midterm and Final were a mix of multiple choice, short answer questions, 1 paragraph question and 1 essay.
Dr. Moses is a wonderful prof who really loves film. His lectures are informative and challenging, bringing an entirely new perspective on life and film. He is a tough but fair grader, and overall I improved as a thinker because of it. Loved his class, and would take it again.
I though John Moses was a great teacher who wants you to succeed. He encourages creativity and gives thoughtful feedback. While this class was demanding, I didn't think it was hard to get an A. There are maybe 5 or 6 long papers to write as well as everyday reading and keeping a journal.
Dr. John Moses is an adept film historian, who's expertise is clear after the first lecture. Many students join his Film History classes in an attempt to get easy elective credits. They soon discover that his class may be one of the more difficult they have taken, because he has no tolerance for a lack of diligent study. Come prepared to learn.
Don't take this class for a easy elective it's going to drag on for you. He requires two books but if film is not your major they are awful to read so don't even bother. He has an interesting taste in film that made me dread the class to say the least he's passionate. It's not really that bad but it dragged on.
Very good teacher enthusiastic
Solid instructor. His tests are few and the guidelines are clear.
Took this course to cover a Humanities elective, do not recommend it to anyone! Class is 3 hours long (even though it's a short term class), lectures are too much, expects too much, and isn't very thorough! Think about a different elective besides this one!
Moses is a passionate professor who is open to help you out if you come to him. Although I must say he is tough on grading his writing assignments, he gives great feedback on what you need to change. If you come to class and pay attention to the films, the essays and final are a breeze.
I know a lot of my classmates complained that he wasn't a good teacher but I can tell you he's a great teacher if you are willing to be a good student. Everything he asks for is reasonable and if you take a college class you should expect to do college level work. Definitely would take him again.
Moses is a really good teacher. I took every single class of his besides Film 5 and Film 3. He knows a lot about the subject. He does lecture a lot, but he knows the material really well. Honestly, if you just pay attention and read the book you'll do just fine. He only requires 2 papers throughout the semester. Just put effort into your work.
He is a good professor, most people dislike him because they are not interested in film. He is a heavy grader and his lectures tend to be very boring. Some of the films he showcases are interesting.
Dr. Moses is a pretty good guy, he assigns about three writing assignments, and three exams, but he is the toughest grader Ive ever had, he will nitpick every single thing in your paper. He also gets very upset if you dont know what films or directors hes talking about, and he barely teaches anything but expects you to know everything. Good luck
Do not take this class because you think youll just be watching movies. There are lots of papers and boring lectures. I took this class for an easy elective, but if anything this class brought my GPA down. I would only recommend this class if youre a film major.
I hated every second of this class. Toughest grader Ive ever had, not to mention he was really boring.
I thought I was taking an easy elective, but if anything this class just set me back. Thanks Dr. Moses, my AP English class was easier than this.
This was the worst class Ive ever taken. Please dont make the mistake of thinking you come to watch movies and then leave. Also I never read the chapter before class and I was fine, only used it to look up definitions for the study guide (which is a waste, you can use google). I want to cry just thinking about this class. I hated it so much.
This was the worst class Ive ever taken. Hes a little rude to students who ask simple questions, and hes the toughest grader Ive ever seen. Do not take this class unless youre interested in film because this class will bring you down.
I was expecting to learn interesting things from him, or anything inspirational. But he taught me nothing. His class is totally boring. Sadly I have to write papers to tell him my understandings of mysterious things based on his mysterious instructions. And he gives everyone bad grades that I know.
Dr Moses is very passionate about films and he really wants you to understand the material, but most of the learning is on your own in the textbook he only goes over what you read
I HATE THIS TEACHER AND CLASS. 1: Rude. Picks on people w/ a rude manner. 2: Heavy test; 25 mult choice q, about 3 short essay q and 1 essay q. 3: Pop quizzes!! 4: NEVER finishes what his topics, so idk wtf to even take notes on. 5: Unorganized, lectures about this, talks about this, then that. Never gets to the point. Will never take his class!
Do not take this if you need an easy elective, I now have to retake this class!
Everything Is based on the textbook and will be reviewed the day after. However He does not tell you what to what to LOOK for in the textbook, this lead me to mindless read the chapter according to the syllabus until he would only talk about one section that I forgot about. Also lectures are literally him running his mouth without a PowerPoint.
If your anything other than a film major do not take this class. It's not worth bringing your GPA down. It's extremely difficult to take notes because he is all over the place when he's lecturing and there are no powerpoints or anything that he uses. If your thinking about taking this class because it sounds easy your wrong and should find another.
I don't know why everyone keeps saying that he is such a bad teacher. I think he is great. He expects a lot from his students, which means he is a tough grader (but this is college).
I will admit Dr. Moses is a tough teacher, but overall he's very qualified and passionate about his job. You get what you put into the class. If you want your grade to be handed to you with ease then good luck. However, if you come prepared and put in a college-level effort, you'll receive a college level experience in his class
I absolutely dreaded this class. Maybe its just me but I was never sure what he was lecturing about, there are no power points, and he just rambles on. He also picks on kids to answers questions, and gets angry when they dont know the answer. He does give good feedback on essays though. Don't take Moses, I highly recommend professor Hamp!
This was a very tough class. Although much of the classtime is filled up by watching films, the tests had very specific answers relating only to his lectures and class discussions. I would not recommend this class to anyone. He is very particular and participation absolutely matters. He will not give you any leeway if he doesn't know you.
Chill teacher, he knows his stuff but horrible way of teaching. all information is verbal base with some notes here and there. Class is Test heavy based and its all based on the verbal information given in class. make sure you read all the required readings or you will definitely fail the course. YOU ARE BETTER OFF TAKING A DIFFERENT CLASS!
This man doesnt give any homework and expects you to know everything, he doesnt use canvas. He told me the last week I had an F.
Best thing was that tests were open book and some of the films were really good
This review is for his online class. Lectures are boring and he rambles a lot. Make sure to participate in the chat and watch the assigned films before attending class. Be prepared to write a lot. Tests are all long essay responses so WATCH ALL OF THE FILMS. If you can write well, take his class. If youre bad at writing, I recommend you dont.
HE TALKS THE WHOLE MANDATORY LECTURE TIME OF 1HR + 15MIN! Then gets mad saying no one discusses. Do not take this class unless you like guessing what a teacher wants to hear. He will talk to you like your stupid. Lots of papers and reading from a book that is interpretive and makes no sense. Exams are papers. Too many complains to fit. Do Not Take.
Do NOT take this class. Lectures are long, and he just drones on the entire time. I have him online, and classes are 2 1/2 hours long of pure nothing. He is never happy with anything you write, and won't give enough feedback to correct things. Honestly, he needs to retire.
It's important to stay on top of assignments and attend class meetings. Yes, it is lecture-heavy, but that's due to the subject matter.
You teach yourself in this class, and if you don't understand he makes you feel dumb. The tests are also very difficult, some multiple choice questions, and a couple essay questions on all tests; for example he'll ask questions like "in 700 words describe why the sky is blue in this movie" (obviously not this exact question). I do not recommend.
Do not take this class unless youre a film major. The tests are incredibly hard, he expects you to spend all of your free time reading, but he gives somewhat good feedback.
It is so bad I want to give you a 0, but thats not possible so I give you a 1
