Tough teacher, didn't like him at all.
he was hard, old fashioned, but i learned a lot.
One of the nicest teachers you'll ever have. He believes that poetry doesnt have a place in college level english, so its just prose. One of the best teachers I've ever had at college, and prob one i'll remember. Gives you good practical training.
not an easy teacher, very old fashoned.
Tough on English probably because English dept is tough on trying to give students degrees who can actually write good English. Tends to put down students through direct/indirect comments (****). Spend enough personal time, you might do well in class.
He is such a hard teacher. He has two day midterms, one for essay and one for short answer and M/C questions. He's not mean, but it's hard to understand what type of style he wants on his papers. I wouldn't recommend this teacher to anyone.
This was one of the first classes I took in college - it's just GE, so why is he so hard on grammar and punctuation? Little reading or analysis, too much technical stuff. It's an easy class but I guarantee you won't remember anything from it 4 years l
One of the hardest. I cant understand what he wants. I dont understand him period. You shouldnt have him as a teacher if you are not already PERFECT in writing.
He is the best teacher I have ever had. Many think he is too hard, but you always learn. He gives all of the notes to you so that you can pay attention to his lectures. Great teacher and Great guy.
Hard, complains, puts down students, biased, rolls eyes if late, annoying, old fashioned, loves students to stroke ego.
This guy is horrible. I get an A+ on one paper and a C- on the next. He turly seems to grade with his mood. He is the worst grand stander I have ever seem. He once started a class with "first thing's first, I had the worst drive home this weekend.&qu
He was stupid, strict, had too many papers to pass out, too many FINALS! horrible grader, I would never recommend this bitter "teacher" to anyone- NO ONE gets an A!
I have never hated a professor so much in my life. If you happen to get him for a teacher turn around and run! He grades way too hard and makes his students memorize completely useless information for his "concepts test". NEVER EVER take him!!
don't EVER take this teacher. he cares his own ass more than his students. failed papers because the topics dont touch his life. gave us 4 pages of instructions how to fill in the teacher's evaluation so he can make sure he keeps his job.
Hardest English teacher ive had. essays are minimum of 5-8 pages... rather than some classes who have just 3-5 minimum. plus hes a picky teacher... super picky... one small thing wrong and there goes your grade... hes very helpful if u email him.
hes a hard teacher. he gives you alot of handouts. very old fashoned, and not willing to help you out. avoid at all costs.
He was very hard. However, I felt I learned a lot from him and he truly cares about his job and his students. He makes you have a conference with him so you know where you are with your grades. If you don't want to wrok then don't take him.
worst teacher at sjsu ... don't care attitude... extremely hard .. anal.. gave me a 72% C- with NO CREDIT!!!
Worst teacher I have ever had!! He fails students on papers just because they dont fit his writing style. I barely passed his class with a C when in Eng. 1A, I an A.. Stay away from him!!
hard teacher...half the class didnt pass..he lives in san diego and flyes back and fourth everyweek to SJSU. i wonder when he'll get the hint that nobody here likes him because hes soo hard and mean.
this guy is hard, the only way to get a good grade from him is to go to his hours a lot, and get him to help you as much as possible, which he will. Kiss up to him as much as you can and you should do ok.
He's DEFINATELY a challenging teacher. His essays can be difficult, but tells you exactly what he wants.Gives handouts like crazy. His exams are painfully detailed.Lots of grammer & definitions.Only stay in his class if you're looking for a challenge. Otherwise, stay clear!
Mr. Murphy knows the system and knows what you need to succeed. He does this through handouts and covering a lot of material, and his grading is fair most of the time. Dedicated to his job and his students, drives from San Diego every other week. Helpful and takes the time to helo you if you need it
Yes, he is hard, and a hard grader, but in Mr. Murphy's class you will definately polish your writing skills. This class is challenging but hardly impossible. Don't consider taking it unless you passed ENG IA with flying colors.
All i have to say is that you need 4 binders just to hold all of the papers he gives out...he grades helllza hard and needs to relax and take a chill pill...wat of it
the worst teacher ever. he has his favorite classes and if your not part of it, ur screwed. grades very hard. had english majors proof read all essays and the best I got was a C-. hardest test ever. needs to relax. over loads you with work. stay away. he will give you like 200 worksheets.
OH MY GOD! My final grade was an 89.8% and he gave me a B+! I got totally gyped! I worked my butt off in the class too! There are many other English teachers to choose from...choose one of them.
Why drive all the way from San Diego wen its no use?!!! Might as well stay there and go torture students at SDSU
Mr. Murphy is extremely hard, BUT, he is the best teacher I have ever had, I'm not kidding. This guy gives you many handouts so that you don't have to write notes all day, believe me, it helps. He gives this job his all, and it shows. If you work hard, you will succeed.
Hard but that's cause he pushes you to polish your skills. I learned SO much. He provides the foundation the majority of us missed out on in high school. True, he does give lots of handouts, but they are very useful(even after the class if over) For both exams, tells you EXACTLY what to study for.
Horrible! All I can say is horrible. He gives way to many handouts and is very unclear about homework assignments. I do not recommend this teacher for anyone.
Really bad teacher. He gives so many handouts and he expects us to memorize all of them.He might tell us what to study for an exam, but when the exam comes, all of the information that we studied is not there. Also, he grades so hard especially on the essays. He always makes the class feel bad.
I hate him. I'm writing a letter to the Dean about him because he's so horrible. I use to be so good in English and my high school english teacher was harder and I still got an A. He over looked my all papers and always gave me c's or less just because he hated me. I'm not kidding. Plus he doesn't teach you, he's like here's the worksheet go!
This class was tough, I got screwed on my department final which was lame to begin with, and that screwed my whole grade. Plus he was way too harsh on his research paper grading. He gave us too many stupid assignments, especially the propaganda project THE LAST WEEK OF THE SEMESTER! All i can say is F that.
if you dont pay attention to your grammar, are concise in rdng. resp.,and really want to learn to write better this is NOT the class for u. In this class you dont learn; you get tested on What u should have learned!! Too harsh on grammar! So you got by with a nice grade in eng 1a, dont expect the same easy grade, this class is for detail orient pp
Murphy needs to stay in San Diego. He gave out a lot of handouts, but you still need to buy all the textbooks for the class. He grades extremely hard on the essays. The department final screwed over a good percentage of the class. I would recommend another teacher.
I'm not going to lie, he's a tough grader and expects alot out of his students. But this is a freakin' english class for godsake, it is going ot be tough. I got by with a B, I worked hard on all essays and averaged a B- before final. The final is basically whether you pass or fail, it's worth 30% of your grade. Good Luck.
He is a very hard teacher. I took his class spring 05 and I failed!! I worked so hard on writing the essays but it just seemed to me that nothing I write made him happy. He'll fail your papers if you don't follow the right format or is you missed a small thing. Don't take him, please take my words.

even though the class was hard, I liked the way he does things. i think that the things that he teaches us in class are very important and beneficial. If you want to learn new things and improve your writing, take this professor. He might be a pain in the butt, but his motives are to make us students better writers.
meh, hes ok, very eccentric.
This guy is a jack ass. He cares more about bossing his students around then he does about teaching.
He is really hard. No matter how hard you try on the essays, he still will fail you. He is a nice guy, and he keeps your attention in class, but his tests are impossible and he is a hard grader. If I were you I would find another teacher.
Murphy is the worst teacher EVER!!! I have never loathed going to class before i took this guy. No doubt he is a smart man, but his teaching skills are lacking, and he gives handouts with tons of info, and no way for you to know what is important and what isn't. Give Assignments way late in the Semester. Don't take him if you can avoid it!
Murphy is a character. Since the first day of class, I labeled him a "diva" He is a total diva.He gives out TONS of handouts everyday, with so much info on them. He expects so much from his students but doesnt prepare them for the work, at all. He is the most cynical, sarcastic man Ive ever met. More cynical and sarcastic than most women even!AVOID
avoid him if possible. he grades hard and is a dick. i learned a lot but i was miserable when i took his class. he is the type of teacher who enjoys failing his students. i would not advise anyone in taking his class.
I took Murphy two years ago, and I constantly hear horror stories about him today. This guy is horrible. He is so pessimistic about everything, especially his students and SJSU. He is a lonely old man who drives from San Diego every weekend, and takes out his "frustrations" out on his students. VERY bitter, biased, and self absorbed. TONS OF WORK
i hope i have a nice word for this guy, but he's just unsympathetic to everyone around him. cares more about his handouts than his students. take him for the handouts, but not to pass. enjoys others' suffering, ridiculously egocentric, good luck to the ones who will take him
he's okay. his class is pretty tough, but his handouts are REFRESHING. he teaches you alot of valuable info. he also has ALOT of group activities. if you want to learn alot, take his class
Simply excellent. His teaching method is very methodical and easy to understand. (Important for non-English majors like myself) If you take him, or have taken him, all I have to say is: GADS!!
I took this guy 4 semesters ago. He grades very hard (at times unreasonable)and comes to class acting like there's a stick up his butt. He talks about his stupid trip to southern California--no one really gives a &%#@. He went over the teacher evaluations with the class!! WTF? I think that's grounds for getting talked to by the English board.
this clas was f*#$ing hard it was a miracle that I passed with a C.
hes a very hard teacher and very hard grader. but u learn a lot in his class! very helpful outside of class as well if u go to his office hours. if u r lazy dont take his class, but if u r ready to work and learn then he is the best teacher for the job!
I got like an A+ on every paper I wrote and the highest grade on all the exams even though I didn't study for****. So, I guess that just means if you're an idiot, don't take him. If you've got half a brain and are willing to not be a little **** after you halfassed all your papers the morning before class, then go ahead. It's English. Get over it.
This guys is way too hard for anyone to get a good grade in English. I took him last semester and worked my *** off, and still end up with C- going into the final. The final exam is DIFFICULT which if you don't have a good grade going into it, you probably won't pass the class! Don't take him!!!
he expects A LOT from his students. i thought i was good at english until taking this class. i used to get A's on everything in previous english classes, now i try so hard only to get C's on every paper i turn in! i would not reccommend this teacher, he is very difficult.
Ok, so Murphy isn't hard, he's just a jerk. I have never gotten that many C's on my papers the entire time I have been going to school. He has crazy standards that are impossible to meet. Go ahead try. He is egotistical, whinny, and very much centered around himself, good luck getting him to try and care about you.
Professor Murphy is tough but his high standards make you a better writer. One thing I enjoy about this class is we don't write many literature papers; we wrote papers that were more practical...like proposals and argumentative papers. He helps you develop the writing standards you need in the future, whatever your field of study is in the future
Only take this class if you are willing to work your ass off to get a decent grade. On the plus side, you'll learn a lot about writing if you put in the effort. Just remeber that he is very anal and whiny about everything (especially MLA format), so your work has to be practically perfect.
This teacher is HORRIBLE... if you want to PASS english do NOT take him he is a completely EVIL man
Mr. Murphy is a super tough teacher, and he expects a lot from his students. His standards are very high, and he does not 'play' in his class. From the very first day it's work, work, and more work. But, in the end, it is all worth it.
My favorite teacher so far. Great professor. To others, he is hard and demanding. I thought some assignments were hard and some were fair. Howeverr he is demanding. You have to write A LOT of essays with many pages. Anal about MLA!! Great personality, very funny and sarcastic. Highly recommend.

He is very demanding it's a very hard class. Take his class only if plan on devoting a lot of time to it. On the plus side, he does make sure you know your stuff when the semester is over.
John is a tough teacher and it is not an easy class but he makes sure you know your stuff. if u like group activites and writing an new essay basically every week then take the class. i hate writing and am horrible at english but his class has def. improved my skills. makes sure u pass WST.
i cant believe this guy still teaches here..i took him in 2002..they shoulda fired him yrs ago...hes terrible..avoid or ull regret it..
Firm but not so fair....teacher taught class with a defeatist attitude...Presumes students in this class should have learned material in high school. Feeds on the departments financial infeasibility--thereby requiring students to pay for additional materials inorder to instruction.
He is a hard prof, I'm not gonna lie. It's basically impossible to get an A. If you're looking for an easy english class, DON'T TAKE HIM. But I have to say, I did learn a lot in his class.
I dont understand why he teaches here. He lives in San Diego and complains about the trip. He always is leaving early to go home so he isnt always at office hours. All he does is criticize our high school teachers saying they didnt teach us anything. We're equivalent to high school sophomores is what he says. He's tough really tough.I'd avoid him.
ditto to the comment below me. he makes you feel very dumb by comparing you to a high school student. he has a very sarcastic egotistic attitude that is nothing but to intimidate us. he does prepare you for the wst though. i guess thats the only good thing
its really hard to understand
Complete pompous, wrote a 5 page essay bout global warming and he Fails it with little to no excuse. He teaches here because he enjoys making fun of the degree of the student education and undermines them for trying. I'm going to file a complaint within the school board, hope other students will do the same to get him fired.
You know what needs to get done. He extends his hours to help his students. You may be a little relutant to go to class but you will learn. FYI he likes his politics
Has a fair grading policy. Does condescend a lot and talks about how education isn't what it used to be. Basically says we are stupid, but it isn't out fault. Talks of politics a lot. Keeps us in the know, however, on the material. If you do the work, the class isn't that difficult. You can't get away with not reading the book. Don't be lazy.
greatest teacher of all time! you deff have to earn your grade. a lot of work but pays off in the end. you will be grateful you took his class when you start your upper division. Really shows you how to write college level papers. if you fail or says hes horrible its cuz your lazy;
not a good teacher. tedious and a ton of work. its weird cause he lives in san diego and goes back every weekend so its hard to contact him on weekends. i would not recommend him.
Murphy is not easy...but worth it to take! I actually wish I would have taken him for 1B. He makes you work for your grade, but it pays off in the end! He can be an a$s at times, but he really can be a great guy! Tells you wants going to be on the 2 midterms...really prepares you for the department final!!!
I had him for both English 1A and B. He's definitely a great teacher! He's hard, but he'll make your writing skills improve and prepare you for any writing you might do later on. He's very organized and scheduled, and goes over any material that might be in his tests or the department final. I suggest him if you want to actually learn something.
This class is extremely tough. But I did take him both semesters because I knew he would make me a better writer. He definitely tried to make the class interesting. But you need to show up to all classes or you'll lose points. There are fun group projects. I didn't know how they were english projects, then i realized you i had to write an essay.
It's a college level class, but acts like his students are in high school. I would not recommend this teacher if you enjoy being talked to like a 12 year old. He HATES when people walk in late, even one minute. So make sure you're a prompt person, otherwise he'll make it obvious in front of the whole class how annoyed he is with you.
This teacher was EXTREMELY hard. I struggled with that class and prior to his class, loved English. I still have a soft spot for English, but just not with John Murphy. If you want to take John Murphy, make sure you're prepared to take a beating and work EXTREMELY hard. You will actually learn something from his teachings. Good luck.
Murphy isn't a nice person, although he knows what he's teaching. He ridicules students. He gets upset at them for not knowing things. He grades papers, even DRAFTS, very critically and according to HIS standards. I've never received any grade lower than a B in any english class in the past, but I may not pass his. TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER!!!
It's definitely a difficult class and at times, turbulent. He makes English a regime and in spirit, does try to polish everybody's writing skills. Those that describe him positively are either good at english or enjoying the grade they are at. I don't see how we can be responsible for the level of our skill if he admits a failing school system.
He's a very hard teacher, so all of you who are looking for an easy grade this teacher is not it. For those who need desperate help in english for the WST he is a definite must. If you participate & attend class regularly then if should be easier, but if you miss about more than 3 classes, then you're screwed. He's a dedicated teacher and he's good
Murphy is neat, organized, and to the book. He goes by his syllabus. He gives out a lot of handouts. There are some group projects. The class is easy. But he grades hard. He is intimidating and says negative/harsh things. Murphy is late with technology and uses an overhead projector. He is an ok professor, you just have to put some effort into it.
He is a VERY challenging teacher. He can be intimidating at times, and sometimes makes you feel insecure. Purchasing the textbooks for his class is REQUIRED, and so is showing up for it. Missing a day of class will greatly put you behind. Try going to his office hours as much as possible. He'll tell you what he wants to see in the essay.
a lot of attitude.. and i mean a LOT. make your life easier and find a nicer teacher..
do not take hime! if u are having a hard time in English
Takes attendance every day and will confront you if you miss any lectures. Grades hard but shows you what you did wrong and tries to help. The man grades fair, but his attitude can be annoying. Be ready for plenty of rants about how your generation is destroying the world. Just grit our teeth and you'll get through it.
Murphy is a tough grader but most of the time, leaves good feedback on essays. He has a sign in sheet that you must sign every time you show up. Also, he will repeatedly tell us about how much better babyboomer are and how our generation will doom the future of the U.S. Bring your texts books and a bulletproof vest.
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Is an unfair grader, you've only done 50% of the class until the last two weeks of school. He always complains about life, and what's wrong with our generation today. He belittles students with sarcasm, and is completely unapproachable. I'd never received a C in English until I had him. Avoid him all costs
Murphys receiving poor comments because he expects real work from students. He explains clearly what he expects but most students in my class hardly tried then complained about their low grades. with murphy you really get the grade you worked for. if your looking to BS a class, keep looking. otherwise, its an enjoyable class for a good student.
He's a good professor, but is very challenging and "angry" about life and the current generation. He normally rants about tax cuts during class transitions, and expresses his contempt outwardly. Half of what he says is laced with sarcasm, and he shuts down your major if it has anything to do with humanities and art - pretty much anything "fun".
Grades really hard, but otherwise pretty alright.
Mr. Murphy is unreasonable when he grades. He grades depending on his mood; if he is happy he will be descent, and when he has his mood swings he will be hard headed. One more thing, he does NOT take effort into consideration. If he doesn't like you, he will fail you. I do NOT recommend him to any student
You receive the grade you deserve. Start off strong, and he will like you. He does have favorites. Thankfully I was his favorite, but that's only because I worked really hard and did what was asked. He hold me I was his best student out of four classes, but my final grade was a B.
I don't see what the big deal is.... just do your work like one does when in university. Don't show up late or turn late work in and especially don't flunk out on your groups when going teamprojects. Study vocabulary for final exam.
If you are willing to learn for personal success in the written language and not merely to fulfill a requirement, Professor Murphy is the way to go. His lectures and the material he provides will enrich the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in college and beyond. He's extremely approachable and understanding with students.
If you are interested in learning and improving your writing skills, he is definitely your professor, but this is NOT an easy class. There were 10 essays total, group work and quizzes on each reading. This class was a roller coaster and I got almost every grade possible on the essays. Didn't know if I was going to pass, but luckily I received a B.
Rude, lots of homework but it's not hard. First English teacher to give me a bad grade. Spends a lot of time hating on our generation. I didn't learn anything. Avoid taking if possible.
Not an easy class, but you will definitely appreciate Murphy after a semester w/ him. I honestly feel like my writing skills improved immensely after both his classes and feel confident in my writing. This class was rigorous and challenging, but worth every all-nighter. Murphy is tough, but fair, and a great professor. Loved both semesters w/ him.
If you want a teacher that will spend a good amount of class talking about how everything our generation has learned is wrong, this is the class for you. Hard grader, heavy work load, many essays. Don't take him, you'll regret it. Trust me.
I can't believe all the bad reviews he has gotten!! I LOVED HIS CLASS! Yeah, he does give a lot of assignments, but they weren't useless or just plain busy work. I felt like his assignments were relate-able to English and the real world. HE'S GREAT! You'll definitely learn a lot.
Do not take his class ! at first he might look to be pretty easy but trust me he's not. This was the most difficult class I've ever taken at sjsu. A lot of work (means lots) and he grades very harshly . I don not recommend him to any of you. Very disappointed.
This class was the only class I received a bad grade in. I attended class everyday, listend to him rant on about how bad our generation is, turned in all my work on time, went to his office hours, and got a C in the class. He is a tough grader and power happy. avoid this class!
As a A student this class is infuriating. He is clear, offers some help but the grading is ridiculous. I know this class is supposed to be tough but when I work my ass off, come in for help, and manage to get not a single A on an assignment there is a problem. This class felt like high school, it was interesting but dragged me down. Don't take him.
He definitely has favorites and grades them accordingly. If you don't go to 1 class he makes a big deal which can be discouraging. If you didn't do so well on an assignment, when he hands it to you he makes a horrified face and gasping noise which made me feel embarrassed in class. Lastly, his OCD wasted a lot of class time.
If you want to learn English, take him! I suggest taking the writing workshops & getting a writing tutor (like he suggests) if you need a little extra help. I have become a more confident writer by taking him. He does grade hard but, he wants you to succeed. Ignore his snide comments and let them role of your back. Soak up the knowledge that's presented and you will learn. Lots of group activities, essays, reading assignments. The midterm was 120 questions. I am hoping for a C in the class and I've worked really hard! I am not great with all the grammar rules, but I am a lot better now.
okay, these reviews may scare you, but I am not the most studious person in the world and I passed with a B+. He is a tough grader and he will make you work for your grade. Does that make him a bad teacher? No. He is an amazing teacher! Scary at times tho. Work load is understandable. Grade based on roughly 5 essays, 2 tests, 1 mid term 1 final.
He is critical if everyone and thing. He makes known to the entire class, if you are, late, did well on an essay or bad. Makes students feel embarrassed. DO NOT take this class!
I would never take him again. He doesn't explain things well or be clear on what he want on his essay. Really tough grader.
