Absolutely the best philosophy professor ever.
Very good teacher. He is funny and knows how to teach well. If your interested at all in Philosophy than definitely take him.
Fantastic professor. Prof. Murphy knows his stuff and knows how to effectively communicate ideas to his students in a exciting and entertaining way. He has inspired me to take more philosophy courses.
PROFESSOR MURPHY IS AWESOME! He does a great job making students understand and doesnt stop teaching until we all get it! He has inspired me to take more philosophy! I am a walking advertisement for his class!
He's an excellent teacher. He actually makes the class interesting. He's very smart and knows everything about what he is teaching.
great speaker - VERY difficult material
He is a fun professor. I wish he took more grades though or gave more tests. There is a lot of material to learn, and having a midterm and final makes things difficult to study for. He is a very good speaker though.
I LOVED HIS CLASS. HE IS VERY INTERESTING AND THE TEST ARE NOT HARD IF YOU STUDY. HE IS WILLING TO HELP AND EXPLAIN EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND HE MAKES LEARNING PHILOSOPHY FUN, EASY, AND UNDERSTANDABLE. HE GIVES QUIZES EVERY FRIDAY SO MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY, THEY ARE ONLY 3QUES
Professor Murphy is an awesome professor and an all around good guy. This class was a lot of fun and very mentally stimulating. He's not half bad to look at either. He's very helpful and pretty understanding about thingd. He offers lots of extra credit and truly wants you to make good grades.
Mr murphy is an awesome teacher! He makes philosophy fun and understandable. You will only have three grades in his class, a mid-term, a paper, and a non comprehensive, final. but every friday you take quizzes that are worth extra credit. Hes easy on the eyes to.
Professor Murphy has a nack for explaining difficult things in understandable ways. The test are hard but if you come to class and get involved you can do good. he is also has a good since of humor and can answer all your questions. Take this ckass if you need philosopht credit.
Mr. Murphy was very cool. He was an awesome teacher. Although the subject of the class was extremely hard to understand and there are only 2 tests and 1 paper all semester, It was fun to go and listen to him lecture everyday. If your taking philosophy, I recommend him!
He is a cool teacher. has a very good sense of humor and likes to have fun. He is very laid back but do pay attention his test are no joke!!!!!!!!
VERY DIFFICULT!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS EXPECTING TO MAKE HIGHER THAN A C
Murphy was an awesome teacher but it would be nice if we had more grades other than 2 tests and a paper. He does give extra credit but that doesnt make up for the tests that you fail.. The tests are super tough! He is an awesome guy but the class is very very DIFFICULT! Not my idea of an Intro class
Great teacher! Take really good notes and go to every class. Will help later on midterm and final. He gives extra credit quizzes but they are difficult even when you do read the books.
He was a really good teacher just some of the things he taught was hard to understand.
Very good course. must be involved in the daiy discussions to ensure that the material gets into your head (only two tests and a paper, with long gaps inbetween). attend often and do the reading. enjoy the relaxed atmosphere but do not let it fool you, this course can be difficult if you let it be.
Murphy was great. Class is very laid back. Don't be fooled by the atmopshere. His tests are hard as hell and the paper will make you incredibly nervous. Great guy, all things aside. Totally willing to help in any way possible. Really opened my eyes to see many familiar things in a new light.
Really cool guy. Very laid back and easy to get along with. Really good class discussions and he always goes well out of his way to explain and answer ?'s. Good idea to show up and take notes, though this is hardly a chore. Excellent way to knock out a fun and fairly easy humanaties credit.
Prof. Murphy is such a great teacher and a really awesome guy! His class is pretty hard but if you go to class, which you will definately want to because its awesome, you should do fine. Only two tests and a paper, but he will help you any way he can. Plus, hes really hot!
Professor Murphy is a great teacher. His class is somewhat difficult but if you go to class and take notes then you should really have no problem, and he makes class really fun so you will want to go. Professor Murphy really gets on the level with students and i would recommend him to anyone. Peace!
Read, take notes, be apart of the discussions during class, and take any and all extra credit opportunities. He really helps anyone who asks. Very laid-back and can explain all phil topics on anyone's level. Be prepared to study hard though! Go in prepared to have your eyes opened to a new world!
Mr. Murphy was an excellent professor. He gives you plenty of opportunities to attain extra credit. All you have to do is your part--show up take notes and be involved. He made this subject apply to everyone and really interesting. Take Him.
Professor Murphy is a great teacher. His lectures are fun and interesting for everyone, but you had better study before taking the tests or quizzes, and think about what you say before you say it. He's eye candy with a brain!
This guy makes philosophy as easy as it gets short of not teaching anything. He goes out of his way to try and explain everything clearly and review material before test extensively. You have to study some for this class and do not miss lecture. He makes class interesting.
Very interesting class. The professor is knowlegeable and very personable. Very sweet personality and he's cute (but married!) Really makes you think outside the box and promotes open discussion. I really learned a lot. Unless you've had other philosophy courses, I wouldn't suggest taking this in the summer. Very good class!
Mr. Murphy is a laid back, nice guy. The class is fun and has lots of discussion. The tests are a little more difficult than I expected. He doesn't like when you point out that most of philosophy deals with terms with no definition.
I wasn't interested in philosophy before I took this class. I will also say, I'm still not interested in philosophy. That is in no part falt of Prof Murphy. He is a good guy and make the class as interesting as I can imagine it being. If he was any less of a teacher I probally wouldn't have made it.
Great great great teacher! He makes sure that everyone understands the material and knows what he is talking about. No attendence policy, but if you miss class, you will be lost! Only 3 tests and one paper, but gives extra point quizzes that raise your grade sooo much. Take him if you can!!
WOW! I absolutely loved this professor! He is the greatest! He's precisive, clear, funny and interesting. He really makes class fun. You do have to pay attention and take good notes but it's all really interesting material. It mostly discussions social debates and past philosophies but he makes them fun. Seriously take this guy!
He is super awesome! I love his class! IT was so laid back but just remeber there are only two tests.. Midterm and Final. But they aren't too bad if you come to class.
This is an awesome professor! He explains everything very very well, and makes the class super interesting. You do have to actually be in class to do good because you need to take notes to study for the two tests. But he is a great professor.
very easy, stays on track, funny, makes class fun
Can't get much easier than this! Makes the material as interesting as possible and as long as you show up you should do very well!
He explains the material very well, and expects his students to exceed! Paper can be very difficult, but he is there to help you through. I highly recommend him for philosophy.
Murphey is awesome! no lie... explains things very well and he'll really make you think! I took his Contemporary Moral Problems class and it was amazing! if you have the opportunity to take this course with him.. DO IT! you WON'T regret it! open your mind and have a good time!
Took his contemporary moral problems class. To me, the tests were challenging and I recieved a passing grade in his class. However, Mr. Murphy is an awesome professor. His class is one of the most insightful I've had.
The class is not easy, but it is extremely interesting. Prof. Murphy rocks! He is down to earth, and he explains things as many times as he needs to in order for EVERYONE to understand the concepts he teaches. Take this class!
This class was the most interesting class I took this semester. The content is not easy, but he will explain it to you until you understand, very cool guy. He really keeps the class interesting. No attendance policy, but I recommend going to his class, because he gives alot of notes that are not in the book. 3 tests and one paper.

he is the absolute best prof that i have ever had! he is well worth the money. the clacss is hard because it is philosophy but he is so interesting and helps as much as he can! take him! hes hott too!
funny man, has a bit of a potty mouth. his class is very intersting, and he chanllenges u in the class to come up with ideas. it basically just test and a paper for the grade.
I took Prof. Murphy this summer thinking I was going to dread every class and as it turns out he's a great teacher & makes class very interesting. I actually enjoyed this class and have changed my way of thinking about several subjects. If you show up and take notes you will do fine, otherwise you will get behind. He is GREAT!!
It's a sometimes confusing subject, but he's great at explaining the more abstract concepts and makes the class very interesting.
Great class!
This is by far the most interesting class I've taken. I wasn't sure I'd like it in the beginning, but I ended up receiving an A in the class and learning a lot about the way I think. This class really kept my attention.(of course it didn't hurt that Murphy is gorgeous!)
The class was so hard and there was nothing but 2 tests and a paper to make up your grade. He thinks were all there because we want to be philosophers.
great guy...great class...worth taking...
This guy is hot. I mean, really good looking. He is very artsy, and always has cool music playing when you walk into class. This class was by far my favorite class ever, it was so interesting. The tests are extremely hard if you do not study...you have to take good notes. I would reccomend not buying the book tho. His notes are great
This guy is awesome....great music playing always when you walk in...great at helping you...tests are a little hard but if you study well and take notes you will pass with a or b easily...only 3 tests total including final test and one paper....i only used the book to get an idea for my paper...i would take him again
Murphy is the best professor at UCO. If you are looking to gain knowledge to help in deciding your own opinions on controversial moral topics, then this class is for you. It is very possible to make an A, if you attend class and study for the exams. He is extremely fair and always encourages discussion. Oh.. by the way.. Sorry Ladies He's taken
i loved this class! he was very clear and very capable of answering questions well. his attitude and energy are great and his knowledge of the subject as excellent. i plan to take more classes from him.
he is hot and funny, but the class is not easy
Honestly, I feel like this class should be taught in a coffee house on couches. It's a very comfortable environment, which you wouldn't think it would be because you're discussing issues that you can't talk about in pretty much any other class. I love John Murphy, he's awesome. I'm going to take anything else he teaches!
Excellent professor, he actually teaches and manages to get and keep ones attention. Might change the way you think about certain topics. Must pay attention in class though and take "some" notes.
He is a good professor. You MUST take notes, and show up for class. You pretty much take notes the entire time, so its easy to get behind especially since the book is used rarely (in intro). He's very attractive...which is a nice change..
took this class two semesters but had to unfortunately drop the class. very good class and I agree HOT HOT HOT prof
Murphy is a good teacher. Multiple choice on his tests are difficult, however as long as you do good on the essay questions you will be fine. Go to class and take notes and the tests will be easy.
I absolutely love this class and Prof Murphy! He looks just like Joey Grecco though...He is an amazing teacher and I've learned alot in his class. His tests are hard....just study and you'll be fine.
Murphy was awesome! He's a really cool, funny, down to earth guy that made learning all this a lot of fun.
Awesome Guy. Class is hard, but he is very helpful and willing to explain anything you don't understand. His views are strong and he tends to push them a little, but don't take it personally and you'll do fine. His test are tough, but master the essay questions (he gives you them ahead) and you'll do fine.
the only good thing about this class is that he is HOT! the class is totally boring and it's really difficult. i studied so much and yet i still made d's and f's on my tests! i had to drop. im sure you can find an easier professor for this class!! i'd highly recommend it
Professor Murphy was awesome. The class was fun to attend and the topics were very interesting. Tests were hard if you don't take notes. DO THE ESSAY QUESTIONS before hand and you'll do fine.
Prof. Murphy is an awesome teacher. His class is pretty hard but it is very hard not to get into the material.
He really gets you interested in the topics, however his tests are very difficult. I studied for Days before the tests and practiced the essays and still made C's and D's on all the tests. He likes to talk about his girlfriend that used to be a student at UCO. He is nice but stuckup.Only take him if you are willing to study hardcore. NOT an easy A!
This guy is HILARIOUS!!! Attendance optional, but if you want to pass you'll go. I went to class everyday just because he was SO FUNNY I didn't want to miss anything! Subject is hard, but he will bend over backwards to make sure you understand. Will give you coffee if you go in to his office for private help! Sorry ladies - He's taken!
The class is philosophy so of course it wouldn't be an easy A. Tests are difficult but it's due to the subject not the teacher. Gave class extra credit and worked with me after I completely screwed up on my research paper. He is very into the subjects and tries his best to make sure everyone understands. Definitely take him!
He is very intellectual and seems organized but needs to convey that to the class better, for better test results, which can be difficult.
This teacher is one of my favorites so far. He made this class so interesting, you will want to go to class just to learn. He encourages different opinions so you get to see different views. His tests are hard but if you study you can get good grades, just take VERY good notes, draw the pictures he draws and write the exact things he says!
class is very difficult but murphy makes it hard to drop the class because he is easy to listen to - and look at :-)
the coolest teacher i've had. arguing with him is the best way to learn. the book helps but really isn't that necessary when you're in class. the hardest part might be the papers, but it really isn't bad. he keeps the class on their toes especially in the God's Existence portion of the class. study for the midterm and final though. :)
He is extremely informed in the field of Philosophy, almost making one wonder how he could retain that much information without his head exploding. I did not do my best in his class due to very hard tests but he really knows his subject and you should do well if you are generally interested in Philosophy. It sure is not easy though!
He's class is really hard! Even with the study guide and essay questions i still couldn't get a good grade on the test. Luckily he gives extra credit opportunities.
I think John Murphy is the best teacher I have had in any subject. I've taken two of his classes and now have decided to minor in philosophy. His tests are challenging, but I made A's on all of them just by taking good notes and studying those notes. He is a very intelligent man who knows everything about the subject.
This class totally blew my mind. He is the most open professor i've ever had and his theories are really good. Very intelligent and He's always open to everyone's opinions. His class is a little hard but if you study you should be fine. I would HIGHLY recommend taking his class for philosophy.
This class really made me think and take a totally different perspective on a lot of things. He explains everything in was that everyone can understand, really knows his stuff, and is fun to listen to. He's a great professor, and I would totally reccommend any of his classes.
Professor Murphy was my favorite professor from the semester! He is entertaining and he always tries to make sure everyone is following the conversation. He wants everyone to really think about the subject and he's great at explaining everything! I've told everyone to take his class if they need CMP or PHIL
HARD but he does good at explaining things. I just had trouble with the hard tests and no extra grades but tests and a paper. Overall good teacher though, he knows what he is talking about
Professor Murphy made me think. I could be wrong here, but isn't that the whole point of a college education. I was challenged. Take this guy if you'd like to think outside the proverbial box.
Contemporary Moral Problems with Murphy was the hardest class I have taken...but what do you expect, its philosophy. He is a very good prof. and knows what he is talking about but the class and the subjects are difficult to understand. If you do take him make sure you read, take really good notes, and ask as many qyestions as possible
amazing teacher! he knows his stuff and presents it in the way that's most relevant to real life. test are pretty challenging but if you pay attention it shouldn't be too bad. plus he's easy on the eyes.
I am a strong Christian. The man is extremely worldly I am a straight A student i had to drop his though. He is extremely challenging and when they say he is a good teacher he is good a explaining a very uncomprehensible way of theology. I suggest not taking him
He is an amazing teacher. Makes you think. I may sound like a geek but I get pumped for his class. I never had an intrest in philosphy before this class but now I have made it my minor. Best teacher I have ever taken at UCO
His passion is contagious. He really knows his stuff had has a knack for conveying abstract and complicated theories/issues in ways students can understand. He?s awesome, and rumor has it he?s available. Go to class, take notes and ask questions. He?s very approachable.
Great professor! He's nice and he makes every effort to avoid making people who participate in class look dumb. Attendance is not mandatory, but coming to class definitely helps clarify ideas for the exams. The exams aren't easy, but they're not that hard if you study. He constantly says, "Do you see the point?"
Great prof. Must go to class and pay attention to pass. The coursepack is quite wordy and sometimes makes the concepts more cloudy than needed for the class, which is why attendance is required to pass the tests over the subject. Test are a little hard, but the essay portion can make up the multi ?s. Tries and succeeds at making concepts clear.
Very easy. Explains concepts very well. Just write down what he says and then spit it back on the essay portions of the tests and you'll be fine.
Professor Murphy is one of my favorite professors. He is incredibly open and plays devil's advocate very well. Some students would get offended easily in the class but he never provoked them, only challenged them to lay everything out in front of them and examine it. Education > Ignorance
Best professor at UCO! Had no interest in philosophy, but after taking his class I love it. Tests are hard, but if you go to class every day you are guarenteed an A. Offers many chances for extra credit, Take it!
Before this clas Iht no interest in Philosophy at all. Murphy makes Philosophy understanding and you want to go to class to see what he is going to say next. Subject matter can be confusing so going to class is a must. Tests can be difficult, but essay questions can bring up grade alot. Gives lots of extra credit during semester!
I took Contemporary Moral Probelms with him, if you go to class you will easily understand the information. He gives you what the exact essay questions are on the test. I only spent the night before each test studying and got an A.
I struggled with this class but I was studying wrong,He is a great teacher and I recomment him!I still came out with a B but if I could do it over again it would be an easy A.Make sure to do ALL extra credit, and study study study for the tests, and know who came up with what theory, that is what killed me always.Know the study guide and youll be fine
This guy is awesome! He is funny, down-to-earth, very relaxed, and sincerely interested in helping his students understand concepts and get a good grade. Pay attention, take notes, and speak up- he loves to hear everyone's opinion.
I had him for Contemporary Moral Problems and he was a great teacher and kept the class fun. Attendance wasn't mandatory at all. He gave opportunities for extra credit. Pretty easy class and it's fun!
Professor Murphy is great! He explains everything really well. As long as you go to class, and pay attention, it should be a breeze. I had him for Contemporary Moral Problems. I would highly recommend it, it was my favorite class all semester!
This professor is extremely intelligent and he does a fantastic job of explaining things. He keeps your interest the entire time. The only problem I had was the multiple choice questions. They were very, very tough, granted he gives a lot of ground with extra credit. I highly recommend this professor. By far the best professor at UCO
Professor Murphy is by far the best at UCO in my opinion. He is smart, funny, nice, and great at explainging things. Your opinion is always respected in his class. I have had three of his classes and made three A's but you definitely work for your grade. I have him to thank for my passion for Philosophy (which is now my major)!
Murphy is a brilliant professor. He's fresh, extremely intelligent, and has gotten me interested in philosophy. He never shares his personal views on issues, although they may be assumed. He just wants you to THINK, and that's the whole point of university. He has helped me define my opinions. I aced this class.
Engaging, funny, sharp, knowledgeable, thorough, great professor. Everything that comes out of his mouth is interesting. One of those professors you wish you could be friends with.
So far, he's been my favorite professor at UCO. I'm not a philosophy major, but I would easily recommend him and take another one of his classes. He is very intelligent, understandable, and entertaining in class. His class is not easy, nor is it insanely hard. If you take him, you will learn so much!!
Enjoyable professor with a good attitude. The lack of assignments makes the test important, and the test aren't easy. However, even though class isn't mandatory, if you go and take notes you will do fine. Write everything he writes on the board.
Ill have to admit he is a great teacher. You really have to know whats going on in the class to pass. You have 4 online tests which are easy and 3 essay tests, those are hard. You have to really study and know the material by heart to pass these. I dont understand it so I failed them all which are a BIG part of you're grade and ended up with an F
GREAT CLASS! really interesting, doesn't use text book but makes own little handbook out of the textbook so it's cheaper! Gives 60points extracredit throughout course, tests are right off lectures! Worked hard and got B , show up and you'll do fine!!
Mr. Murphy is a great teacher, he helops you broaden your views and open your mind to different ideas and ways of thinking. he makes things very clear and the tests are essays that he gives handouts for so you can practice writing them. the only thing I didn't like about this class was that i couln't get textbook in a hard copy.
Very hard to follow during lectures. Study, Study, Study. He expects great details in explanations. Do not be vague.
This is a serious thinking course. No vague answers are allowed, if you want to pass.
Avoid this class at all cost. Lectures were hard to follow. He seemed to never have the time to explain clearly. Neither Tudor had taken his class so they were not much help. Chapter test are online and they are very difficult.
He is a wonderful professor. His lectures are interesting and his stories are hilarious. This class touched on touchy topics but if you go to class and pay attention to his lectures you will do fine.
Murphy is an amazing professor. I had him for CMP and have walked away with a greater appreciation for the very sensitive topics that we cannot talk about on a daily basis. I would recommend him to anyone. It is not an easy course, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend recording the lectures and listening to them again before the exam. Amazing class & prof.
He was a great professor and very knowledgeable. He would not make you feel stupid if you asked questions or needed clarification. I would take his class again but I had to withdraw from it. If you take thorough notes and read the online book you can pass. 25 multiple choice and 5 essay questions. No busy work.
Great professor. His class consists of four online multiple choice tests which are a bit difficult. And 4 essay exams which aren't bad. Overall he explains everything well and he is very entertaining and funny! Very helpful!
He is the best professor ever. He has a lot of knowledge and he wants his students to do well. I am a student with a disability and he has been much helpful with me. I strongly recommend this professor .
If you say this class is hard, you're just plain lazy. He's an example of a great teacher! He literally tells you EVERYTHING that is going to be on the test. You only take 3 test for his contemporary moral problems class and he gives you a study guide weeks in advance as well as a class devoted to overview. Take great notes, study, and you'll pass.
AMAZING! After the semester ended I wanted to take more of his classes just for fun. He is a very laidback guy and funny. The tests are all essays, but he gives you the questions ahead of time and all you have to do is memorize them. I wouldnt say is super easy but its an easy A is you actually try. He uses his own book that is online. $75, not bad
You do not need the book as long as you can grasp what John is saying in class. He is a great teacher but tests are essay only, not to much extra credit but if you practice writing what you want for the tests you'll do great.
professor is amazing. He is willing to work with you.
He is very animated, he relates issues to personal stories tat really helps you understand the information. This was my favorite class i have taken in my two years at uco.
Without a doubt my favorite Professor at UCO so far! Prof. Murphy kept the class interesting and always challenged people to think outside the box. I learned so much from this class and wish I could take more classes from him! SERIOUSLY, if you can take him- do it! I recommend him to everybody!!
I was a student who took this class before with a different professor last year, and they were not willing to help me understand the assignments. So I retook the class this spring with Mr. Murphy , who was a great teacher. he explain the assignments sooo well.
Professor Murphy is amazing. Grab him for intro to philo if you can. His online homework is tedious and frustrating, but he gives you all of the short essay questions in advance before tests. He also offers an in-class review where he answers all of his questions. Review the questions and go to class for a fairly easy A.
Great professor! He's attractive in a different kinda way. His lectures were very thought provoking! There's a few online post tests that are kind of hard, but the in-class tests were basically a breeze. He gives you all the essay q's before hand so you have plenty of time to practice your answers. Only con was the book being online.
Best prof on the planet. Period.
One of, if not the, BEST professor I've had. He makes the material interesting and very easy to understand. Tests are all essays; normally he gives you 6-7 essay topics before test to study, but only 5 will be on test. Choose 4 and whichever one you don't choose is extra credit (1-1 & 12 pages). Don't freak out! Show up & take notes, it's not bad!
This is the best class I have taken! I might have missed a few but it worth going to. And gives out a essay questions so take advantage and write it down and reread and you will be good on test day!
He wrote his own book so don't buy the one the school tells you to. 4 essay tests all year, last one is the final. Gives you 7 essays to write before, puts 5 on the test, have to answer 4 and the last is extra credit. Gives a full review the class before the test. Great lecturer, usually got out early.
I found this class challenging but I really enjoyed it so I didn't mind applying myself the little extra needed. Murphy's lectures are interesting and normally very good about explaining the material. You'll do MUCH better on the tests if you never miss a lecture, though you can learn the material from the book. I really recommend this professor!
Show up to class, take good notes and your set. Great professor!
I LOVED Professor Murphy's class. I took a different Philosophy class before and I didn't like it, but this class got me hooked. His lectures are fun and inspiring, you learn a lot and as long as you go to class, read the book, and study well, you're solid. I'd take this class again if I could!
Loved Professor Murphy! He is a very laid back guy and tells you everything you need to know word for word. Not afraid to give you a few days off when he gets ahead in the material. Highly recommend him!
Great professor. He teaches in a structural manner, easy to understand. Teaches about hot issues without personal bias. The exams are extensive in that you write 4-6 essays in an 1hr :15 min. This means you need to really know material. If you go to class, take notes, it's not difficult. The essays will wear you out, but very doable.
So many good things to say so little characters! He was awesome. I looked forward to his course even though it was challenging. He kept me engaged and focused. Take notes, show up, and write your heart out on tests and you'll do well. I wish I had more classes with him. He was great!
What an amazing professor. He has a great way of getting everyone engaged into his lectures. Though this class was tough, he made it pretty interesting. There are 4 essay exams and post exams. I wished he taught more classes, he's definitely a looker and has a great personality and I had quite the crush on him, but he's not available, ladies!
I love him! I've never rated a professor before but I had to for him! Not only is he funny, he is very smart. AND he wrote the book for the course! His tests are essay questions which he gives to you the class before! I love him would take again if I could!
He's a nice enough professor and he definitely knows what hes talking about but this semester he seemed very distracted and my class wasn't taught half of a chapter and when the test came he expected us to know it all. When I contacted him about it, he was very rude and almost disrespectful to me concerning my question.
I am actually disappointed in this class. After reading reviews for this professor, I assumed this class was going to be fun and interesting, however I found myself staring at the clock waiting to be released. The post tests are HARD! Murphy doesn't post grades on d2l which is extremely aggravating because I thought I would get a B & I received a D
Murphy is honestly one of my favorite teacher's I've had. He's super funny and makes lectures very interesting. The tests aren't hard if you show up to class and take notes. He also goes over every question on the test the class period before. So if you study and ask for help when you need it, there isn't any reason you can't achieve an A or B.
Murphy made the lectures very fun. The online post test were really hard, but you can use you book. The tests were also hard, but he does go over the question.
Keeping an open mind is essential for studying moral problems. He is one of the first professors I've taken who treated me like an adult. Pay attention and go to class even though it's not required attendance. He wants his students to understand others' perspectives.
Professor Murphy was my absolute favorite professor this far. His lectures aren't mandatory but I wanted to go to his class because his lectures are that interesting. The test aren't easy but if you go to class you'll have no problem. TAKE HIM!!
the Prof was one of the better instructors I've experienced thus far, really enjoyed this class even though there was alot of material to learn and intense essay testing. the lectures were in depth and he seemed to thrive off of class participation. Higly recommend him.
Can't say enough about how wonderful Mr. Murphy is. I would take him for every class if I could. Beyond interesting and keeps you locked it at all times. Also, considering it is philosophy, he keeps it very unbiased and open to all ideas. I loved his class and plan on taking another one he teaches.
Murphy has by far been my favorite professor I've had at UCO I took Contemporary Moral Problems with him, and I was nervous at first because the only grades taken are essay-based exam grades, and there's only four of them. However, he hands out a study guide a few days before and literally gives you verbatim the exact info he wants in your answer.
You're only graded on 4 essay exams, and 4 online quizzes. The 4 quizzes aren't super easy but the essay exams are straight forward, he lectures about exactly what he wants and does a review day for each test .
Great professor!! I highly recommend taking him. He is very interesting and you actually wanna listen to what he is saying. His test are a little hard but since you get to use the book it isn't that bad. Great class!
i took it as a summer course and wished I would have taken the full semester course. what an amazing class. very good at explaining material and is unbiased throughout his lectures. he will tell you his views at the end of the semester. loved every second of the lectures because the topics covered are interesting and controversial.
Awesome professor!!! Highly recommend!! Lectures are very interesting!!
AMAZING teacher. His tests are essay questions and are very challenging to try to explain. TOUGH grader! Lectures are very interesting
I took Contemporary Moral Problems as a freshman with him and I LOVED it. You do not have to go to class, but you will want to ! He makes the course extremely entertaining and explains everything so that each individual will be able to understand it.
I took this class because I heard many good things about it. While his lectures were really good his tests were incredibly difficult, especially if you aren't a super good writer. I got an C in the class and have never felt worse about myself (being a straight A student). Would be a great class for philosophy majors to take!
Professor Murphy has interesting lectures. All of the tests ARE essay tests, but he gives you the questions way before the test, and he allows one day of class to ask questions about whats on the test. There are post tests as well but they are online and you can use your book while taking it. Everything he talks about in class is in the book.
He is so into philosophy and has such passion for getting people to really think about life and makes it so fascinating that you don't want to miss. He challenges your brain and promotes thought by presenting different disciplines in philosophy. He loves life and what he teaches to the point that you question your own beliefs and expands your mind.
I highly recommend Murphy for philosophy! His lectures are amazing and really making you think deeply. He just wants you to learn and have interest. Murphy does not give busy work it is all graded on tests and quizzes online. and the test in class are essay questions, very easy if you pay attention in class to lectures and take good notes.
Murphy is a super duper cool guy and he explains everything in an interesting way. You can ask him any questions you want on his review days and his tests aren't hard since they're online and he gives you the essay prompts in advanced. I advise prewriting your essays and listening to his lectures. It pretty much answers everything on his tests!
He may not always remember your name but he does really care and stays unbiased throughout the year. He's really qualified and I love discussing philosophy with him outside of class as well because it's just so intriguing and his lectures really make you think about/want to research your own beliefs. You do have to try in this class but worth it!
He is a really great lecturer, attending class is important though otherwise the criteria wont make sense. His tests are all essay style with is a lot of work but worth it if you study. He has a good sense of humor but does swear a lot in class so be aware if you are sensitive to that type of language.
Professor Murphy's class is very interesting and attendance is not mandatory, but you should attend class so the material is clear. There are 4 exams and he gives you all the questions to study for the exams a week before. The class in general is easy and he makes class seem short.
Murphy is AMAZING! his lectures are fun to listen to because he is funny and very intelligent. He does curse quite about and talk about drinking a lot, so if you are not to fond of that stuff I would not take his course. The only grades are test but they are online and then an essay portion in class. You have to attend class and study.
Prof. Murphy wrote his own text and gives engaging lectures that help relate the material to real life. On the first day of class tells you how to pass: answer the essay questions on the exam reviews and then rewrite them (by hand) over&over. I missed one post-test and still came out with an A. Highly recommend.
Murphy is awesome! He's not afraid to curse and use adult humor. His tests are a little tough but he gives you the questions beforehand so you know exactly what to study. Just be as specific as possible and you'll get an A. I don't think he kept attendence but the test is straight of his lectures, so I would recomended going. Plus he's hilarious.
Prof Murphy is extremely smart & a good prof. overall. In this class, you have 4 exams & four post-tests. He gives you a study guide for exams a week before the exam & what you see on the study guide is EXACT to what is on the test. The post tests are online and they are easy. Do good on exams/post tests as theyre your only points for the class
If you are a bit anxious about Philosophy, he makes it much smoother for you. I took this class because I enjoy the subject and was almost tempted to change my major to philosophy itself. Great Professor. You need to be willing to question your own beliefs. You'll see. Do it. You're A's will feel great.
Murphy is 10/10. He breaks all arguments down in an easy to understand manner and you can easily ask him questions. Would recommend showing up to class because his lectures are helpful. Tests are easy, especially the essays. He gives you the prompts in advanced and you can ask him to go over them on review day. I advise prewriting them to study
Murphy is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is very good at being there for you when you need him. He is also amazing at teaching Philosophy because he actually knows what he is talking about and can make it very easy to understand.
When taking philosophy I couldn't imagine taking any other professor. He is funny and breaks arguments down so it is easier to understand. The exams are mainly in class essays. I strongly recommend pre writing them and studying them before the test.
When taking philosophy I couldn't imagine taking any other professor. He is funny and really knows what he is talking about. A lot of people in Philosophy are stuck up be he is not and is willing to help you if you do not understand . The exams are mainly in class essays. I strongly recommend pre writing them and studying them before the test.
Good teacher, who taught from power points. He uses the textbook that he wrote so he knows his stuff. Only issue is the only grades you get are from online and written exams, which are tough. It would definitely take him again though.
honestly an AMAZING teacher. super funny and knows what he is talking about. the hard part about this class is that the test are 5-7 essay questions and they are graded pretty tough. but as long as you show up and take notes its pretty easy to get a good grade in the class.
Murphy is an amazing professor. Philosophy can be a boring subject, but I came into his class everyday happy to listen to whatever he had to say. He makes the class extremely enjoyable. There is no reason why anyone shouldn't get an A, he gives you every essay test question before he gives the test and gives extra credit on every test.
This guy makes class interesting. He wrote the textbook. It's short and sweet. And his lectures are almost word-for-word from his textbook. And since he doesn't take attendance, you could only show up on exam days and still make an A. He grades essays pretty tough. However, every class before an exam, he answers questions from the class.
Easy A, good lessons
Real funny guy, really enjoyed this class and would take it again. Tests are super easy if you take good notes and write out your answers like an hour before. Definitely knows what hes talking about.
He is a very smart man who cares about you understanding the topics. Some of the topics can be frustrating at first but you'll get it, trust me. He has 4 online tests and 4 essay exams. The essay exams are easy but the online ones are pretty hard. Just take them together with a friend. He's hilarious and doesn't allow bashing people for any reason.
Truly the best teacher I have ever had. He is brilliant and unbiased in a class that entails a variety of opinions on very touchy subjects. He wrote the textbook you'll be using so it's very easy to follow and entertaining. HIGHLY recommend - this guy is 10/10.
Dr. Murphy is very smart, but sometimes, almost too smart. His class is a big lecture and you have to stay on top of what's going on in the class.
Professor Murphy is laid back and funny. He covers the content of class well. You have to pay attention, take notes, and read. If you do that youll pass. After the first exam youll understand how he works and youll keep doing better.
Dr. Murphy is a very interesting professor and I have loved getting to learn more about philosophy in his class. Although it was an interesting class, he does make you work for your grade with pretty difficult tests but if you study you'll be good.
Really enjoyed his class, unlike my other lecture style courses he kept my attention throughout the class. The topics are really interesting and his examples make the material easier to understand. Try not to skip class too often because you'll miss alot of important info. Overall Dr. Murphy is a fantastic professor, and I highly recommend him!
Super knowledgeable (wrote the textbook), responds quickly to emails, and he is a great speaker by making the class thought-provoking, yet not over-bearing. Do not be afraid to ask questions! 4 essay tests (w/ optional extra credit on each), easy if you write out before 1 or 2 times. Take online tests w/ people & use online textbook during them
Professor is very good, I took him for summer course which made it very difficult to keep up with. There are 3-4 exams that require a paragraph or two as a response. quizzes are very difficult as you can't google, recommend taking quizes with a friend since you have to actually read the book.
Dr. Murphy is an amazing prof to take. He's easy going. He makes the class easy to understand and digest. It's a very interesting class that takes on many viewpoints on different subjects. I learned a lot about how to approach a problem. There are four written exams and 4 online exams. Not bad at all. Just write them out ahead of time!
Prof Murphy has been my favorite professor by far. If you have to take Philosophy- TAKE HIM! A lot of my friend's have different professors, and they all wish they had Murphy instead. NO assignments, just essay tests and online tests. If you write the essays out before hand, you'll be fine. Attendance isn't mandatory, but i actually enjoyed going.
Took him for contemporary moral problems and I enjoyed it. Grading wise, he only gives exams. 4 essay exams that are done in class and 4 online exams (which were harder in my opinion). His lectures are interesting and I would recommend recording them. Extra credit is available on the essay exams and read the textbook for the online exams!
Essay tests were much easier than the multiple choice online tests. Questions were very tricky & I took great notes. Not a lot of homework, but go to class & take good notes & you should be able to make a B.
The book he wrote has an abundance of typos which make reading annoying at best and confusing at worst. It definitely needed to be proof-read. His online pages were disorganized and a hassle to navigate. The other reviews make me think he would be much better in person, but that isn't an option with the virus right now. Gives very little feedback
Love John Murphy!! The nature of the philosophy makes the class difficult, but he makes it a lot easier. The exams are pretty hard, just make sure to listen and take notes during the lecture. There are tons of articles online that go in depth on all of the topics in the class, but you have to read the whole thing because nothing is on quizlet :(
Contemporary Moral Problems is a really interesting class that I highly recommend. Sometimes the textbook doesn't make perfect sense, so the video lectures are really helpful. 4 online tests and 4 essay exams that are really just short paragraphs. Given all the material needed to write well rounded essay exams so don't worry about those
I don't usually like this sort of thing but I genuinely had a terrible time in this class. Badly written, handmade textbook for way too much money for its worth. ($80) His grading makes no sense and his quizes are just as badly written and hard to understand as his text. The topics seem outdated to me and silly to be talked about. I dont recommend.
Professor Murphy is enjoyable and he explains concepts well especially for beginners. He was easy to communicate with, very understanding of his topic, and was a teacher that I genuinely learned from. Read the book, critically think, and you'll do great. I finished with an easy 100.
Requires you to purchase textbook (he wrote) in order to pass class, the exams are embedded in said online textbook. Responds to emails very quickly and is generally helpful in them. The textbook is long and uses complex language, I feel as though it was made way harder than it was supposed to be. The online exams were tough and frustrating.
Contemporary Moral Problems is a very difficult class full of controversial topics. Professor Murphy treats you like an Adult and Challenges you. Online Exams are difficult but using the lecture videos might help. You get 10 Discussions/Comment Posts to do, and the 4 Online Exams and Essay Exams. Essay Exams have better freedom. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT
Class was easy overall, but I wouldn't take him and this class again. The videos were not impressive, and they didn't really help. The text is online, and the exams are embedded in it.;50 questions each. Not all the Links worked but ALL his videos did.
A very thought provoking class with a well informed professor!! I'm not a philosophy person at all but I really like this course and would take it again. The online course allows you to pace yourself how you want, the videos are informative and the work isn't too tough. Just pay attention, don't get behind, and be open minded to complex things.
I really enjoyed Prof Murphy's lectures, and he was an incredibly caring professor. I had to reach out to him for help this semester and he was so kind and willing to help. Though, the class is quite difficult unless you take very extensive notes. The tests are very thorough. His textbook has quite a few typos that make it hard to understand too.
I had to meet with him once over the phone and he replies VERY fast and is VERY sweet. One of the kindest and most understanding professors I have met! The work is basically self-paced, and he does not care what political view you are. He only cares if you answer the prompts and if you follow the requirements. I highly recommend this course!
Professor Murphy is a kind and understanding teacher. The class is self-paced with a mix of exams and essays. Read the textbook, use Unstuck ai for study prep, and you'll do well. Recommended for beginners.
My only issue with this class was that we had to purchase his own book for the curriculum, however his book is not great, and it is hard to comprehend his questions as well always have typos and they do not make sense I have to re-read everything a million times because it just makes no sense the way he explains stuff.
I was interested in his class there was a lot of interesting moral problems that we talked about. I took this class online. Whenever I would submit my assignment he would always say that I didn't directly anser his questions. Which wasn't true. I wouldn't reccomend him. He is biased and doesn't have a clear and good grading criteria.
I did his online class for contemporary morals. The textbook was mandatory, he wrote it, which should be a moral problem in itself. The tests were incredibly hard; he regularly forgot to put spaces in the questions and some of the questions could be answered in multiple ways. And he tried to write the questions in a failed poetry way. (Outta words)
I took Professor Murphy's Philosophy back in 2018 (I cant remember the code) I have often thought back to his class, not because of the substance of the class but how ridiculous this class was. He wrote his own textbook which you had to purchase, and the questions from the homework were written in it. I wouldn't take his class again no matter what.
If you are taking it just for the credit read the rates and maybe even take it somewhere else. Online and written exams are from the textbook he wrote, and he is a very tough grader. If you have any concerns or questions don't hesitate to email him.
Don't take him if you want to keep your sanity.
