Horrible! Language barrier, Doesn't respond to emails, Not clear Don't take him
Does not lecture as much as he rambles. Demanding essay questions on tests.
difficult to understand
if you like phil take him, interesting guy
Small language issue but the man is brilliant. He may assume that you are absorbing but if you ever had a question, asking him when he is in his office is always an option; If PHIL is your major, take him-genius

Good professor. He comes off as kind of eccentric and strange. However, he is really smart! Take some time to talk to him after class, it'll help you a lot in the long run. One of the smartest professors in towson!
Hard to understand, broken English, very soft spoken, very vague in paper requirements.
Most of my class dropped after the first test was handed back. You can't understand him.
Murungi is genius. as a teacher he cultivates and challenges original thoughts. He is a brilliant story teller, and an easy going person who is well in touch w/ the students. He is also very funny. if you dont like to think on your own, dont take him.
Has a thick accent, but you can tell the man knows alot about the topic at hand. Class can be boring at times, tests- i cant emphasize studying enough. Not an easy class to BS.
brilliant guy, if you can't think critically don't bother.
Hard to understand but if you know how to BS your way through a 10 page paper, this is the class for you. I got a B+ and I wrote my papers the night before they were due. Funny at times and very understanding. Shows many videos. Nice class.
It has been many years since I have had Murungi, but his insights have stayed with me and have been invaluable for my thinking and development. Those who don't want to exert the modicum of effort to think will disagree; too bad for them!
Interesting class, not especially difficult if you read the material and take notes in class. Not particularly clear on grading.
worst professor i have had in 3.5 years at towson
Crazy grading system Towson doesn't recognize. Aimless class. Clear grudge against the West. BS = A/B paper. Wanted me to pay for copies of handouts he already made copies of for class. If he challenges you mentally, it's probably 'cause you already were. Worst prof. I've had in my life. Don't take.
Professor Murungi is one of the best professors I have had at Towson, in any discipline. He is extremely intelligent, nice, fair, and wants everyone to learn and sculpt their minds. Very involved with his students. Wants people to do well. Thank you, Professor, for everything.
What would you not like Murungi? If you do he will send his CROCIDILE!!! CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP!
You must love the subject to appreciate this class and teacher-- which I did. His mind is very expansive, while he is directed in his teaching. It was informal, yet, the material, though complex, will never leave me-- a way to your Self.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! DROP IT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!! This guy expected doctorate level work for a freshman level class. His grading is purly subjective and is totaly unfair. His lectures are turturous and are meant to drive people insane!!! He has a heavy accent and says "NO" before every noun. He is the worst teacher that I ever experienced!!!
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS. He rambles on and on, making no sense - and that's when you can understand him. You can be pretty sure to get a C in the class as that was pretty much the only grade he gave. Only wants people to reiterate his opinions. For a GenEd, lower-level class it was the most difficult one I had in my 4 years at Towson.

Great Veiws... Mind Opening experience. Very flexable with his assignments and how they are done. Very Helpful, and Fair Teacher. If you get a chance, and Like to open your mind, Murungi is the MAN!
Wow! I didnt understand anything he said for the first 2 weeks of class. Very thick accent and hard to comprehend. Interesting content, he is a very contemplative person. But He's a good guy and is willing to give you breaks if u need them.
do not take this teacher!
Don't let him know that you believe in anything beyond the Earth. Very biased against spiritual people. He is also the most disorganized teacher in the Dept. Sad, because he is the Dept. chairperson.
What a joke. "Disorganized" is an understatement - went on an unannounced trip to Africa during finals week and forgot to leave our final exams; gives no grading criteria yet grades semi-"hard" regardless; misrepresents the thought of the philosophers discussed; makes no sense, and accent/speech impediment/whatever = totally incomprehensible.
Good guy, very passionate, but pretty disorganized. If he only took his own weaknessess into consideration for grading, he'd be alot more tolerable.
Worst professor ever.u wont understand a word he speaks.totally useless.very unorganized.teaches what he thinks is good.he should not be the chairperson anymore.i think he should'nt b allowed to teach.goes off topic a lot.unbelievebly unclear, unhelpful and non sense.DO NOT TAKE HIM.Plzz for the sake of god DON"T
Don't take him at any costs. SHOULD NOT be a chairperson, much less a professor. He is biased and doesn't give the grades that you earn. He also doesn't return your work so you don't even know what your grade "might" be until the end.
Can be hard to understand, but if you do the readings like he tells you to and sit where you can hear him, then he can have some interesting things to say. I had him in 4 hour blocks, so a 50/75 minute class will be just fine. The tests are easy to B if you read and listen, but I always got Bs so I'm not sure how to get an A. Read and listen.
A wonderful, yet complex professor. He is very intelligent, though one must listen and play careful attention in order to fully grasp the content of his lectures. He never gives notes, so you must be a great note taker. He makes you think a lot about what occurs in society. If you have an open mind, then take him. Not for the lazy and narrow minded
This guy is ridiculous!!! Its impossible to understand what hes saying, and on top of that hes a hard grader. Its pretty hard to make a philosophy class boring, but this guy manages to do it. Do not take him unless you have to.
Boring, unnessarly hard, and unclear. He is completely disorgnized, test questions pulled from thin air and expects you to fill an entire blue book on a single question. This class is a requirement for graduation, and there are a host of better professors to take it with. Avoid!
Hard to understand at first but can get used to after 1st class. A lot of reading.. can be heavy on the eyelids at times but he opens the classroom for discussion/debate which helps the material/time go by. Exams are open essay.. about 4-6 questions each. expect to write a page for each question or more. would recommend to take by acoin flip
He is good at his job
Had in back in '85 and he was great. Taught me about Descartes and Country Joe and the Fish Electric Music for the Mind and Body. Awesome, liked it so much I got a DJ copy of the album. Way far out thinking opening doors like art thinking.
One of those rare, deeply contemplative, always insightful thinkers. Give him a chance and he will change the way you think - about everything. An embodiment of the philosopher's he teaches - he is the wise man who we may not always understand. But, deciphering the insights beneath the poetics of his speech reminds us why we study philosophy.
Friendly man. Subject matter is a little challenging and might go over your head. Just have a positive attitude and use online information to supplement textbook, which is a little hard to understand. Study well, take good notes, ask questions, and you should be fine. Four to five tests consisting of one-page written essays for each question.
Great guy outside of class to. He is a not the best prof. I took him for Philosophy of Law. He did a good job picking the readings for the class but HORRIBLE at explaining them. You are basically on your own. 4 text and he will expect you to know the readings... Great class discussion. Not for the lazy student. HARD! Thick accent also doesn't help.
Very heavy accent, extremely hard to understand and follow. If you want to get a decent grade you have to attempt to teach yourself with the book. 4 exams, each with a few essay answer questions. He makes a couple funny jokes every class. He only takes attendance on days when not many kids show up. Avoid this teacher if you're looking for a gen ed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He has an accent that is impossible to understand. He never prepares us for tests. His lectures are useless and he provides no notes or anything. He rambles on for an hour and fifteen minutes about nothing. Goes off on tangents a lot. Read the book, but you'll still get a C on your tests. Three tests and a final.
This is possibly one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Please do not take this class. Im literally begging you. He is a very nice guy but makes NO sense. He has four exams and they are all in essay format. Says "....and so on" after every sentence...lol
Honestly despite all the hateful comments, i really enjoyed going to his class. Half of the classes were debates and if you try and learn the material (can be hard)then you can do very well. Got over his accent fairly quickly, and he can be freaking hilarious. If you plan on skipping the class and not reading, you will not do well. use the internet
Honestly if you just do the homework you're set for a b at least in the class. The teacher is hard to understand but he will tell you exactly what will be on the tests a couple days before and it really helps to take notes and outline the chapters. If you just do that you'll be set.
Murungi's lectures are boring, slow, quiet, and too unstructured. He's a nice guy and a fair grader. Just read the chapters before the exams and you should be fine as long as you like to write a lot. Only exams with just 4 essays. For a Gened there may be more entertaining professors but if you are independent then this class isn't too bad.
Throughly enjoyed his class. He is very thoughtful and explains ideas throughly. After a couple days I got used to his accent. Exams are entirely essays. Seems to look for evidence that students understand material taught, and can expand on it through their own thinking, so taking notes and doing the reading is necessary to do well.
Awful "professor" who is almost impossible to understand, rambles about god knows what, disorganized, uses a terrible textbook, uses weird grading, biased, and should be avoided. If you want to take a class where the professor actually teaches you something, don't take this class.
I really like Professor Murungi. He is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about. It is unclear sometimes but everything he says is on the test and really does open your eyes to certain aspects of the law.
Phil of Law was not a very good class. The readings were terribly dry and the exams were a bit of a black box. I don't think Murungi is such a bad prof. but you should avoid this class.
Eh, this class put me to sleep..A lot. Very hard to understand. Test are questions which you have to write a lot. (about a page or more fore every question) DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
He knows what he is talking about, but the way he teaches is horrible. Philosophy 101 is a class to definitely not to take with him at all. At first his accent did get in the way, but it's easy to overcome that. If I were to redo this semester all over again, I would completely avoid taking his class at all cost.
Avoid at all costs. Literally just stands in front of the class and rambles, half the time it doesn't even make sense. Extremely boring. Read and study the book a lot, that's the only way you'll do well. Four exams, each require you to write four essays on textbook readings. Find a better PHIL101 teacher.
One of the most intelligent and thought provoking teachers of my entire life. If you have any kind of interest in philosophy take anything you can with Dr. Murungi. I still have no idea if I have a mind.
Don't be fooled by the accent or your presuppositions. Professor Murungi is razor sharp and will blow your mind. Hes givin out life changing wisdom that can be missed if youre a grazer waiting for the clock to run out. Do yourself a favor and pay attention cause hes got some serious stuff to lay down. He is very kind and really making a difference.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HIM. He sits in class and blabbers about nothing for the entire class, then sends you an email one day ahead of the next class telling you to read a ton of chapters from the books. He gives no assignments, only tests, and grades based if he likes what you said. Definition of lazy professor.
Eh. Not my cup of tea. He's sweet but extremely confusing. He's quiet and has an accent. Can be very funny at moments and knows what he's talking about, just so boring it's hard to keep along. I wouldn't suggest, but if you have him you'll survive.
The professor is nice, but extremely confusing and hard to understand. He lectures the whole class and always goes off topic and rambles. he will email you a day before class and give you a bunch of assignments. he grades on how much you write and doesn't give exact grades.
readings were hard and confusing and so were his lectures. tried to take notes but alot of it was scattered ideas. there were 3 exams and for each you have too write 4 essays. he is a hard grader and wants alot of content written. doesnt give you clear ideas of what each story is saying. he wil try and help if you see him after class hours.
Dr. Murungi is a very nice man and is passionate about philosophy, but he does not teach well. Most of the lectures can be confusing and he goes off on tangents during lecture. Lectures were based off of the readings assigned and the tests were on those readings. He has a thick accent which could be difficult to understand. Take at your own risk
Murungi is a really nice guy, just not the best teacher. The lectures can be confusing and difficult to see the connection between topics. The readings are pretty important. He's not an incredibly hard grader, but you do have to work for it. The tests aren't terrible; he gives you a selection of 10 essay questions and you have to answer 4.
Very confusing to follow during his lectures. He is clearly very knowledgable, and will answer questions well, though very few questions are asked. This is likely because his lectures are a constant stream of tangents at times. Don't expect helpful feedback on tests, it is hard at times to understand what you did wrong.
Murungi is a sweet guy, and if you go to him for help he is more than willing. He appreciates if you come to him. Grading is a little confusing, but only 4 written exams including the final. Do the readings and have an opinion on them. Go to class if you want a good grade on exam. Would recommend if you're trying to fulfill core requirement
Content can be a bit confusing BUT it is easy to get an A. Go to every class and participate even if you don't understand. Ask questions even if they are dumb. All he wants you to do is try. Talk to him after class and make sure he knows you. Loves to talk. Write a lot on the tests and you will be good. Long as he knows you tried you'll be good.
Murungi is an intelligent man who clearly knows what he is talking about. However with his accent and constant rambling, it's hard to grasp what he is actually teaching. The class lacks structure as he gives basically no notes, only talks. There is no hw and the tests are essay style and he expects you to write a lot even if there's limited time
Murungi was EXTREMELY hard for me to understand. Even when sitting in the front super close I had to really make an effort to pick apart his words. He seems knowledgable however he tends to ramble and go on to the point where I no longer know what he's talking about. Lots of reading, rarely writes on the board, just talks at you for an hour.
Class time wasn't really the best. He rambles for an hour talking about the readings but it gets confusing really quick. He often goes off on tangents. He also has an accent so if you are worried you won't be able to understand him, don't take the class. Only 4 tests, and no hw but the test are all essays. I would'nt recommend him for phil101.
He has an accent, but after one or two classes you pick up on it and he's not difficult to understand at all. There are no powerpoints, he stands up and lectures every class. I bought all of the textbooks and didn't read any of them because his tests are based solely off of what he talks about in class.
I would never take this man for any classes or wish upon my worst enemies that they have to take this class 343 with him. Maybe he's okay for other classes, I'm not sure. But for this one he's awful and rambles and is very hard to follow. If you write a lot for his tests you'll at least get a C. He likes people to ramble like he does I guess.
AVOID AT ALL COST, lectures are the most boring thing on the face of the earth. He has the thickest accent and is so soft spoken that you can't understand what he is saying, and when to start to understand, he goes on a tangent that has nothing to do with the class. Had a lot of bad teachers in my life, Murungi is by far the worst.
I would NOT recommend Dr. Murungi. His lectures are the absolute WORST. All he does in stand in front of the class and rambles. No powerpoints, and barely writes anything on the board. Only graded material are exams, and you have to write a lot if you want to get a semi decent grade. My exams would be 4 papers long when I turned them in, got B-'s.
Do not take this man's class. He has an accent and he makes no sense in his 50 min lecture and offers examples that do not relate to anything he is discussing. Also, don't take Phil 101 with him. He assigned a 200 dollar book and expected us to buy it. Unless you have 200 dollars to spend on ONE book in a 101 level course, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Do not take this class with this professor. His class is just 75 minutes of him standing rambling on and on and if your lucky, he writes something on the board. He has a thick accent and talks very softly so it is very hard to understand anything he says. Only thing that counts towards your grade is the tests. Do not take this class!!!!
Professor Murungi is the best professor I have ever had. If you are looking for a truly inspirational and provocative philosophical education, then take his classes. Nothing will be served on a platter for you, which means you will have to think for yourself, for once.
He doesn't really follow the syllabus. All of his courses have about the same assignments: 3 tests, 2 in-class summaries, and a final paper. For his tests you are required to choose 4 from about 8 question options to write essays on. TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. You to write at least a page for ea. & be sure to WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING HE SAYS during lectures.
Nice guy but doesn't follow the syllabus at all. 3 exams all year and those are the only grades for the entire semester. he gives a study guide, which helps a lot. you actually have to read the textbook or you'll fail. isn't attendance based but when people start to not show up he will take attendance and base your final grade off of that.
As long as you participate in class and pay attention, you will pass. Takes a bit of studying for the 4 assignments which are all exams that you will be given in class (including the Final Exam).
John Murungi, Murungi as he wanted to be known, was inspiring and invitational, as his lectures were always provocative. "My gosh, did he really say that?" Yes, he did and I had to think and rethink and question my own foundations ... and I did and I learned and I grew and I found there are no limits to my comprehension ... and I was so grateful .
Spends all class lecturing off of the reading if you want to pass you NEED TO READ!! He has a pretty thick accent & is pretty soft spoken, if you cant hear him sit near the front. Also I barely showed up to class, I mostly would only show up for review however I actually did the reading section. I participated during the reviews & managed a B+
Yes, the class can be super boring since its pretty much him rambling the entire time. But, the only tests you have are in class essays and the final is exactly like those. He gives study guides before each test that are exactly like them. Because of that, I knew what to study for without having to read from the text (most of the time).
Very philosophical. No grading system. Does not follow syllabus. Write a lot for your final about your opinions on the topics covered and you should be fine. Everything was very abstract and fluid in his course.
I created a profile specifically for Dr. John Murungi. The absolute worst! I cannot stress this enough. Stay farr away. Take latin american philosophy or whatever else is available in that section. This guy has no rubric, no criteria. Talks for 75 minutes straight! Rarely any class participation. Low voice, rarely talks about readings. Emails late!
No powerpoints, doesnt use blackboard, doesnt even write on the board, heavy accent (you do get used to it though) emails you readings/important information the night before. Only graded on 3 exams and the final. The test are kind of hard. They are all short answer but if you write a half a page to a page for every question you will pass.
Murungi is VERY philosophical. Most of class was spent with him lecturing based off of his own ideas and personal thoughts (despite it being a seminar). His ramblings are a bit worrisome at first, but he is very interesting to listen to. He is very subjective in his beliefs and teachings- make sure you do the readings at home to prepare for exams!
Do not take this class. Completely biased opinion and will disrespect every belief you have if it's not his own. Received F's on all of my exams when they were extremely well written. You can barely hear him when he speaks and lectures are not at all focused on philosophy.
You can tell he's a nice guy and means well but he's clearly set in his ways and grades you based off his opinion. In order to get a decent grade on each exam I had to write a page long essay for a "short answer" question. I dread going to class each day, he's hard to understand because of an accent. Don't recommend this class.
Here is why muranji is the worst professor. He doesn't give actual notes he just mumbles the whole class about nothing. No powerpoints. He has a textbook for $120 but it doesn't even matter. He sends a study guide with the test essay questions before exam so just google the philosophers and you're fine. writing more better grade, make stuff up
This class is heavy in reading, but the professor gives a guide as to what kind of questions you should be thinking about. If you go to class, go to his office hours before taking the tests, and read the readings, you will not have a problem in his class. He is very helpful and kind. He is soft-spoken and has an accent but it is not that bad.
.He's a pretty chill teacher, the most you have to do is read. The books are very easy to read. Other than that he gives out three exams and your finial. The exams are easy because he gives the answers in his lectures.
Those who discredit Murungi simply do not understand him. He is not a professor who teaches philosophy as a list of terms and definitions. Read the text, listen to him, engage with the ideas, and you will realize that he is one of the most profound professors you've ever had. He is fair, insightful, and wants you to think. Think, and you will pass.
I enjoyed this class. Recommend sitting up front (Participate, he loves it!) Pay attention to lectures bc it helps to know what to focus on when studying. He sends out study guides too. Only graded off of exams which are essay format. You get 8 question options and are required to answer 4. He likes when you write a lot.
I like Murungi as a person, but as a professor there are many concerns I had. Murungi's only assignments are tests, which are HAND WRITTEN on paper. His grading doesn't seem to have a set standard, it seems I just received a random letter grade every time. No powerpoints or any other material to help you learn or understand the readings.
He is very nice and very passionate about what he teaches. He has an accent and is very soft spoken, so he can be hard to hear. His lectures were always very hard for me to pay attention to because I wasn't entirely interested in the topics, and no ppt. Your grade is based on 5 exams that are hand written. He gives study guides to help you prepare.
If your already struggling and not doing well in life DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR it was my own personal nightmare, our class never gotten any kinds of A's. He says come in to appeal your grade where he then degrades you and then gaslights you by using extra reading that we didn't have. if you can withdraw, PLEASE WITHDRAW!! I wish i could rate a 0
Murungi is a good guy. I have nothing against his character. However, I would highly advise against taking his class if you can handle it. He gives very vague instructions for assignments so that grading is highly subjective. His lectures are extremely hard to pay attention to. You can do fine, but it won't be a good experience.
I can barely hear anything he says in class, it's all primarily reading long long texts. His exams are not so hard but he grades toughly if it doesn't revert back to his lecture sayings, overall interesting class but will never like to take again.
You have to read the textbooks he assigns, or you will not do well in this class. The good thing about his exams is you can write enough, and he'll give you at least a C. Lectures are rather boring though.
Horrible professor all he does it talk about random things in a very light voice impossible to hear or understand. If you do not write more than 3/4 of a page per short question for your exams you wont get a good grade. He only has 4 things graded the whole semester 3 exams and the final exam which he grades based off his opinion.
Sometimes i would sit down in his class and not understand a single word being said by him, he doesn't present slides or anything like that. If you don't have the books you'll probably have trouble trying to figure out what he is even teaching. Don't take him for any class if you have trouble understanding topics.
all he grades are exams, idk what ppl liked him but he does not give any assignments, i still dont know my grade and the semester ends next week?? i would not take him again, u cant understand him and all you do is read and listen to his boring lectures and the exams are handwritten papers and ive heard he grades tough so run and hide
I would not recommend this professor to anyone. The only grades you will get are from quizzes taken every few weeks. He would not post any grades on Blackboard and half of the time when I got a quiz back, it had no grade on it. If you don't buy the books you will not know whats going on because you cant understand him half of the time.
If you take this course: You. Need. The. Textbooks. The tests are entirely based on the readings in each chapter, and the questions can be complex. Very soft spoken, doesn't use slides, and simply just talks and writes random words on the board. Attend class for credit, READ!! outside of class, and write 5+ pages for tests and you'll do okay.
Professor Murungi assigns two text book readings to read before each class. He was very helpful during office hours but be prepared. Sweet guy but quiet. Definitely be prepared to take lots of notes and memorize them. His lectures can be hard to follow and he can also say some random things. Overall its hard but he's nice if you show interest.
Professor Murungi knows what a good education is. His classes are reading intensive, and his lectures cover the main themes, but he does not waste time asking everyone to share their irrelevant opinions. If you have the discipline to pay attention to his lectures and read all of the material, you will get more than 3 credits worth of learning.
Nobody in the class can really understands what he is saying due to his accent. He jumps around from topic to topic without ensuring people are following along . He doesn't use PowerPoints or anything online. he just writes on the wipe board.. his hand writing isn't neat so it is kind of difficult to read what he is writing.
DO NOT TAKE!! I took this because it was the only Tsem course that fit my schedule. He teaches this course as if it is a 300 level philosophy course. You can't understand a word he says due to his very heavy accent. Does not post grades on Blackboard and never gives any feedback. For your own sanity, DO NOT TAKE!!!
you cant understand him
Genuinely cannot understand a word this man is saying. Do not do this to yourself.
Do not take this professor. Does not give good feedback on exams, if you don't write a lot (even if you properly explained the prompt) you will fail. Handwriting is illegible, even if you show up to lectures, you're not going to learn anything. No PowerPoints, just talks the entire class without actually connecting his points. DO NOT TAKE!!!
your not going to be able to understand this man and its a yap session
CANT understand him for one..two there's only 4 things(4 exams)NO OTHER ASSIGNMENTS,+ doesn't even add the grade to blackboard.Strict grader & must answer exam questions with ATLEAST a page..you automatically getting marked down if u don't write a lot.Even if the question can be answered in 2 sentences you BETTER turn them 2 sentences into 2 pages!
He's a nice guy with interesting stories but he has a strong accent and can be quiet at times. Only 4 assignments being the exams. Exams are 10 questions for you to pick from. Exams are easy to get "aid" during and he does not really call on people during classes. Classes are lectures only with no slides or notes.
Not once during the span of this class did I have any idea about what was going on. However, there was not a single expectation on me as a student. This is a good class, 'maybe', to take if you need a philosophy credit for a major or minor or something. It wasn't difficult but I assure you if you understand any material, you belong somewhere else.
I hope you like writing, because each test only consists of it. If you write less than a page and a half per question, you will not perform well on the exams. Expect handwriting 4-6 pages for each of the 4 tests he gives you. He talks very quietly and has a strong accent that makes him hard to understand. All of your notes will be from the reading.
Absolutely amazing professor that lectures are very in-depth and about the subject. You are learning in class. He's very easy to understand and is an overall amazing professor you should take him.
Honestly, he is not as hard to understand as people say he is you get used to it. But do not try to ask him questions in a lecture he will either ignore you or just keep talking about the topic he is on. He jumps around from topic to topic which makes it difficult and does not use slides or anything in his lecture. I would not take him.
