Great fun as a teacher. Tries to keep the readings interesting and the tests are easy if you've read well. Great sense of humor and pretty darn cool.
Pretty funny AND sarcastic, readings are interesting
I thought this class was going to be my hardest, but it turned out to be great. He has a great sense of humor - 'Spike' is cool :P
"Spike" Is a great teacher. His assignees interesting books, he is funny, and teaches anthropology well. His class is both enjoyable and your learn some stuff in the process.
He assigns great books and grades fairly. He actually learned everyone's name in an auditorium full of students. He knows his stuff and always answers e-mail promptly. The tests are short answer and simple if you've read. Take good notes, as the exam questions come from his lectures. Great class!
best teacher i ever had very funny and also teaches well!
I hated this class, he is very very BORING, if you take this, I WARN YOU: DRINK COFFEE!! Lots of uninteresting notes and lectures, i dont recommend it!
He is a good teacher and tends to repreat himself over and over again. His tests are all essay so you have to know your material, but if you go to class you will do fine. Personally i think he is rude and makes offensive comments.
This professor is really funny and makes a 9 am 3 hour morning class worth it! Take this class even if your not interested in the material it will shock you how interested you may turn out to be.
This is one of the best teachers I've ever had. The 3 hour class flew by bc of his sarcastic and witty humor. He assigns interesting books and keeps you entertained with his cynical view of things. Great class and definitely a great teacher!
He is very funny and keeps the class interesting. The tests are multiple choice and very easy. I highly recommend taking a course with him.
He's not so nice. His tests are pretty easy, as long as you read.
GOD this class is so boring I cant stand to stay the whole time and he takes attendance randomly at the begining and end of the class. The book he assigned is not interesting whatso ever and either are his lectures. His lectures are so boring and jump around ways too much, DONT take this class.
This teacher is very boring. His voice is very boring and makes you not want to pay attention. He does make jokes every once in a while and they are kind of funny but the class is boring, but very hard to pay attention to. Tests are not that bad, you just have to read everything and TRY to listen
No walk in the park, but all you need to do is read the material & go to class. Those who think he's boring either have no interest in anthropology or have no concept of what boredom is. This guy's funny & so interesting. I hope to have more of his classes. He's too cool! Take him; you'll enjoy it!
I LOVE this class. The professor is sarcastic and funny and keeps the kind of tedious lectures (at some points) interesting.
Worst teacher ever. Complains about taking time to talk to students. Unclear about projects. Not good to talk to one-on-one. He's a jerk.
repeats everything until your confused!
Apparently one of the raters below are one of those lazy bums who fall asleep in class. He gives you as much respect as you give him & his class. You listen, he'll listen. Easy as that. Awesome, helpful, clear-cut. He's the best! Have any questions, go to him. He's great! Love the class! And the pro
Pretty good class, not the easiest, but not too hard. Napora is soooo funny but class can sometimes get boring. He takes attendance so plan on going to class. Tests are MUCH easier if you actually read.
This subject is boring no matter what at least this guy has a sense of humor! You get put into groups to do a final project(which isn't hard). Takes random attendence which means you have to go(which is hard). His tests aren't that bad, but you have to read and pay some attention in class to pass.
Spike is cool, his lectures are pretty boring and he DOES take attendance (sort of), showing up and asking questions is req'd. however if you LISTEN he repeats the main points over and over and over so its veyr hard to fail his exams unless ur sleeping all the time.
Biased towards his own political beliefs. Tries to impose them on students, and disregards anyone who has a differing opinion. Unfair with grading policies, and lectures focus on his opinions rather than on solid facts, and if facts serve to prove him wrong, he ignores them. Didn't learn one thing.
I thouht this was a fairly easy class. THere is no cumlitive final.. just pay attention in the class and show up you will get an A
Napora is a great professor. His lectures are factual and has his TA's help when he has doubts. The group project is pretty easy, granted you select decent members. His class is no walk in the park but with effort, you will get an A or B. Do the homework (short and easy), go to class, and take notes
This is one of the worst teachers i have ever had!! He is very unfair and his grading scale is rediculous! He gets off to attendance so you have to attend his class every single time and he never lets you out early! He treats you like a child and does not help you at all! Do not take this teacher!
The comment below is apparently one of the class slackers. You have to go to class and he does end class early some days (not often), but come on now--it's college! Grow up! You'll learn a lot from this guy. Just show for class and read the stuff. It's easy and fun!
he's a really good teacher. his class was very informative. he can be pretty funny at times, and also pretty boring. the class wasn't hard. do the readings, do the homework, and pick good group members.
Soooo boring, but the class isnt too hard. i never went to class or paid atenttion and def. didn't study much and got a B for the class. Nice guy but the class drags on forever!
He is pretty awesome but has a very dry sense of humor. He made the class a little bit more interest but still the class is very LONG! Tests are based on lecture for the most part-multiple choice but are kinda tricky.
Easy class if you take good notes, study, and pay attention. Exams are tricky and sometimes the questions are badly phrased, but not too hard.
he is a **** and he says things and does not comply. if you get help from his TAs then you should be okay.
I ATTENDED ALL BUT ONE LECTURE (THE DAY HE GAVE A POP QUIZ), TOOK NOTES, STUDIED HARD, OUTLINED EVERY CHAPTER & STILL THE EXAMS WERE DIFFICULT. HE'S VERY TRICKY WITH HIS QS & NOT CLEAR. HE LIED TO MY GROUP ABOUT OUR GROUP PROJECT GRADE & I LOST RESPECT FOR HIM... YOU DECIDE!
He is funny, and kept the class interesting during the dryer parts. As long as you go to class and do the reading you will do fine :).
He repeats everything he says over and over, which makes paying attention hard. The class would have been interesting if it had been another teacher. Tests are somewhat tricky with unclear questions and class is boring and slow paced. He also had a rude attitude towards students when you try to seek help.
Class was interesting. The teacher was always willing to help out, and shows that he actually cares if you pass or not.
Class can be fun sometimes b/c of his dry jokes and the videos, otherwise its pretty boring. Class is WAY to long and slow. He is tricky on his tests, so be careful. Forget asking questions because he will just say " I already said that, remember?" even if he didnt. Drink lots of coffee to stay awake otherwise bring a nice pillow to sleep on.
Very boring, makes every detail of lecture seem important so you never know what to study. Very tricky test questions. Showed annoying video clips, and got mad if someone left early. Jokes got old fast. The long haired guy t.a. is such a dick and tried to be interesting during his own lecture which was really lame!
I studied and studied for his tests, but for some reason I always did poorly. He lies when he says, " You don't have to know these names for the test. " Plus, he makes you feel like a total idiot if you ask a question. And he has this sick fascination with Oprah Winfrey and always talks about her.
Spike is an excellent teacher. His classes are interesting & unusual. Anyone who believes him to be too difficult obviously lacks intelligence & would be better off in a trade school.
I tried really hard to get into his lectures, but never could. Like said previous, he speaks like everything is important& when study time came for exam . . I was baffled. Did poorly on my tests because he was unclear, and his humour did get old after the first two weeks.
He is extremely boring. He doesn't like ppl sitting in the back. He will call on you even if you don't raise your hand. Very sarcastic. Tree hugger. Looks like he belongs in the 70's. Very monotone. Acts like he is a high school teacher. Has no text, just makes you read very boring books and articles. Wants you to believe what he believes.
Outstanding instructor. My favorite in the anthropology department. As long as you show up regularly and participate in class then you cannot do poorly. He is very into the subjects that he teaches which helps draw you into the material. I've have taken four of his classes and highly recommend him.
HE WAS VERY FUNNY, HIS LECTURES WERE REALLY EASY TO UNDERSTAND, BUT HIS TESTS WERE SOMETIMES A BIT IFFY, BUT AN A IS NOT TOO HARD GET.
Spike is great! The exams are writing intensive and require understanding more than memorization. I got a lot out of the class and enjoyed the books - so greatful not to have a horrible text. I am taking TWO classes next semester with him and really looking forward to the lectures! Also teaches an Intro class, which I heard was brilliant!
I thought SPIKE was great! I loved his dorky emo looks and he was interesting. He does require attendance, you must read the material. I found it tobe some of the most interesting Ive read His tests come from class notes, important stuff is on the board- duh! He does have a very dry humor but he enjoys all types of jokes. ANTHRO MAJORS I recommend!
by far the most boring class Ive taken in a while. When I could drag myself to class it was very difficult to stay awake through his boring ass lectures...and he wouldn't even give a half point to bring my grade up a full letter.
Dr. Napora is a unique teacher in that he truly enjoys his subject. Students who put in the time and effort will do very well - reading comprehension skills a must (& should be for ALL college students anyhow!!). People who don't have an interest in Anthro and don't want to work hard for their grades simply need not register.
awesome class. my favorite this semester. his humor is very entertaining. about 75 students in the class and he learned everyone's name. if you go to class, do the reading, and participate in discussions you'll get an A.
This class was very interesting, plus he's pretty funny. The tests were a bit difficult as well as the group project.
His intelligence makes him hott. I love him. My crush on him got bigger and bigger and now I love the man!
I didn't get everything I expected out of this class, however it did give me a new perspective on the subjects discussed. Dr. N knows his subject matter, however some lectures are similar to the Cult. Anthro class. His exams included detailed writing portions, and don't procrastinate on the paper. Overall an interesting class, and great professor.
He is BORING! Only thing you do in this class is read the book and then discuss its not fun like other Anthropology classes you would take. Just do the work on time and you should do well. Tests are based on the notes he goes over in the class.
great class, great teacher. he is a tough grader, but you walk out knowing that you earned the grade you got. i would take more of his courses. oh, and he's cute in a self deprecating shoudn't-be-so- humble sort of way.
Spike is a beautiful man with his luscious red locks and slim profile; sea-blue eyes that bore into your soul and cause your mind to think thoughts of reckless abandon and wanton lust. His caustic wit and discerning mind have torn my heart from its safe haven and laid it in homage at his feet.
the lectures are a bit boring and his drug references get old fast. on the plus side, the readings are pretty good and his class is VERY easy. not recommended if you are looking for an exciting elective, but it works as a painless GPA booster.
not an easy A must work for grade...lots of reading...cares about how students are doing and is very helpful....good teacher
Great teacher, willing to work with students for a good grade. Must do the readings, he will learn your name fast and constantly call on you, you need to be prepared.
Great professor! He makes it clear for every student what is expected on tests and has a great sense of humor. I
Extremely interesting class, awesome professor...need I say more?
Biggest jerk of a teacher. Fails everyone on the projects. do not take. HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED. unwilling to help you correct your mistakes, acts as if you should be honored he is talking to you. take this calss if youd like to fail.
He's a good teacher; likes to make jokes during lecture. Attendance is important- sometimes you have pop quizes and in-class assignments, you get counted off if you don't do them.
What sucked about this class is their is a lot of reading!! He gives reserve articles, and you gotta read a lot of chapters sometimes. Luckily he just focuses on main points and not little details. Generaly, his tests are easy, some questions are tricky, but you should pass as long as you read. I got an A in the class and I hate Anthropolgy!!
he's a good teacher and he's pretty funny. he's really nice too. the class is kinda boring though and you have to do ALOT of reading. his tests can be tricky but if you read all what's assigned you should be fine.
I had him for Magic and Religion, he was so much fun! The reading assignments are interesting and he applies the theories throughout the entire course. He really cares about the learning and the material. There are a lot of reading assignments, but if you read and study, an A should no problem at all. He's great!
The president of USF came into class and gave this guy a check because he was rated one of the best professors on campus! He's got a great sense of humor, and I have never taken an easier class than this one! All multiple-choice. Definitely take him for Anthropology majors, and take this class if you just need credits.
Good professor. 2 exams, group project, and a final exam. All exams are multiple choice. Make sure you do the readings- including the reserve readings! Take good notes in class and you'll do well.
great teacher, sarcastic, makes me want to be an anthro major. study for the mult. choice tests, do good on the project, read and youll be fine.
I had him for Middle East, it was by far the best class I've taken on campus so far. It's great how passionate he is on the topic, and the readings that he assigns are easy to read. I will definately take more classes with him in the future! Those who don't want to work hard and earn their grade shoudn't take him, everyone should have him once!
Before I took this class, I wasn't even sure what anthropology was. I throughly enjoyed taking Napora's class, however. The cultures are interesting and he definately understands teenage humor. Come to class and listen to the lecture and you shouldn't have to worry about your grade. The group project can be tricky so maybe bring friends to class
He is a truely awesome teacher to be around. He appreciates his subject matter and cares about his students. He's got a wicked sense of humor and he's cute in a I-Need-a-Woman's-touch kinda way. Awesome guy, very approachable, will definately take more of his classes in my college career. He's a must have for any anthropology major, LOVE HIM!
Great class..worth it for a grade boost
He's elitist and looks down at you. Managed to make an interesting topic about as boring as it could be. These other reviews must be written by him.
I loved Spike! He was very cool and funny. He related the material to his own experience doing research. Very easy tests. Met some interesting people when working on the project. Only downside is you have to come to class. And once he had a grad student teach a lecture, that was awful.
Very dry and dull person, I was an antrho major prior to his class, but knowing that this guy would teach the majority of my classes, I changed majors !
Spike is the greatest professor I've ever had. He's passionate, funny, (I love his dry humor) highly intelligent, and adorable. I have a crush on him. His classes can only be appreciated by serious students. Do the readings, participate, and you'll be fine.
His lectures are boring, the material is oversimplified, and no opinion is valid (besides his own, and those of a few theorists). Then he has the gall to get mad if students seem uninterested or unwilling to repeat the same, tedious answers for 3 months straight. The material for the exam is provided in lectures. No need to think critically.
Dr. Napora is the reason I decided to major in Anthropology. He articulates his ideas about cultural anth extremely well. He requires participation in class which is useful when it come to test time. The majority of test questions come directly from class discussions. If you are serious about anth I highly suggest taking some of his classes!
This guy is unlike any teacher you've had. If you are serious about Anthro take Napora because he truly understands and conveys Anthro theory - must attend classes and READ the material - "magic number 5"
The material he teaches can be tough, but is always interesting. Dr. Napora makes the information as well as his help readily available, so if you're willing to work it's not hard to do well in his class. He has a great sense of humor! Take his classes, they're awesome.
Very smart, very funny, cute and passionate. I have a crush on him too. You must read and you must come to class, but those aren't downsides. Serious students should enjoy the whole learning thing...his class is awesome.
Cultural Anthropology changed the way I look at a lot of things, and Dr. Napora does a great job of teaching it. He knows what he's talking about and has an interesting sense of humor. Participation and attendance are key, and you must read the material, which anyone should be able to find interesting. He has a low tolerance for ethnocentrism.
Awesome teacher. Inspiring. He really knows his stuff and is passionate about the subject matter. A very interesting person. DO THE READING!! Even if you're not an anthro major, everyone should experience a Napora lecture on Magic and Witchcraft!
Napora is a fabulous teacher. If you want to pass his class, you HAVE to go to it because tests are based off of exactly what he says during them. He takes attendence and you will loose points if you don't go. Make sure you do the reading because he will call on you during class discussion!! Very interesting class and Great guy! Highly recommend it
Napora was the reason i switched my major to anthro. no textbook, just 3 good novels. attendance is mandatory, but his lectures are always interesting and his sense of humor is great. take this class!
He doesn't like to answer questions. Make sure you do the readings because he will call on you. His voice is monotone which can make it hard to listen to his lectures. Go to class because he does take attendence. If you can sit in on a class or two before you sign up for the class.
Mr. Napora is a good proffesor. Read the material and come to class! you should be fine.
Napora is about near an awful teacher! His grading is very subjective and is very unclear about what he wants on his tests. He can also be rather insulting, whether he means to be or not I don't know. But I did read and attend class and had trouble with the tests, so it's not like I was slacking in class.
Great class! He is a really good teacher and pulls things from the readings I could not even think of. Attendance is mandatory, but his notes are great so u don't really want to miss class. Everything is in the notes and u do have to read , but its not much!! There's no reason people should be complaining about this class
Like many other students, Dr. Napora inspired me to switch my major to Anthro. He's extremely passionate about his work. Has a unique sense of humor, but I enjoyed it. Really wants his students to do well, but only if you care for the class. Do the reading, attend class, and take good notes and you will be fine. PS- he lovess napoleon dynamite.
Everyone should take Napora. To not enjoy his class you would have to be the most bitter and depressing person on the planet.
Come to class, take notes, study, and listen. You are bound to get an A. His lectures are well done and the notes are very, very helpful. He is pretty funny from time to time as well. There is a reason he got the best undergraduate professor award.
Tries to be helpful. Reading is easy but his expectations of comprehension of subjective matter is a bit hard to grasp at times. An easy C but an A takes some work.
Though I'm a Poli Sci major, this is one of my favorite classes of all time. If you can get this class definitely take it. He is such a great teacher, very little homework, and no papers. Though you do have to read, it is very easy to understand. His lectures are awesome and he tries to make the material easy and fun.
Anthropology. Fun teacher, likes to make jokes and have fun in class. Cares about student grades. Only thing to do in class is read and study, class consists of lecture concerning reading. Participation in class is strongly suggested and will call on people who are not paying attention once he learns names, which is pretty quick. GREAT teacher
I love this class. The tests can be easy. If you remember to study the book AND the notes given in class. Otherwise you'll be a bit lost. Just read and you'll be fine. Attendance is mandatory but who wouldn't want to be in class with Spike?
Spik eis one of the best professors ever. His love for teaching is overshadowed only by his love for anthropology and, possibly, Oprah.
Napora is a good teacher and knows the subject (almost too well). I received a C in the class but learned a great deal about Anthropology. The test are mostly based off notes, with minimal knowledge of the book. I thought that the grading was too strict for this class. Overall, I wouldn't take the class unless you really appreciate Anthropology.
Fantastic teacher. I have learned so much from him. Take him if you truly want to think and learn about cultural anthropological perspectives.
Several friends recommended that I take his class and I loved it. He is a really excellent teacher and I learned a lot. The texts were fun to read and he made me see things in a different way than I had before. You must attend class to do well and do the readings. Class participation is big, too. He is a really great prof!
Napora is very clear on subjects discussed in class. Do the readings and go to class and you will be fine. The readings are various ethnography's which makes it much more interesting, rather than a text book. I earned an A and would recommend anyone to take him.
Dr. Napora is an amazing professor. I had him for Cultural Anthro this past fall. He's hilarious! He keeps class fun and always interesting. I learned so much in his class. No text, but you have to read 3 novels. If you read the books (they're really good) and take notes, there's no way you shouldn't do well in this class.
Good teacher, lectures are a bit drawn out and get boring at times. But if you read the books and take notes during the lectures the tests/quizzes will be a breeze, Homework was super easy, only thing is that he's very picky about grammatical errors in papers, more so than any of my comp teachers ever were.
I learned alot from him! I reccomend 100%
AMAZING professor! I have now taken 3 of his courses and wish I could take more. One of the truly most knowledgable anthropology professors in the US. He loves learning and I think that is very important for a teacher, he likes to pass on his knowledge to his students in a passionate way.Take his courses!Do the readings! And you will truly benefit!
He's a hard professor, but I heard Theories of Culture course is hard no matter who you have. Have to do 2 5pg boring papers, 1 mid-term exam, and a final group project.
Prof Napora is super awesome. I have him right now for cultural anthro and he is so funny and definitely keeps class interesting. Make sure you DO THE READINGS and participate!!! Definitely recommend!
I can't say enough about how awesome Dr. Napora is. By far the best prof I've had at USF. No textbook, few really interesting books and articles to read. Do the readings and participate, you'll learn a lot more. Very interesting class and Napora makes it that much better. I highly recommend taking him for any class you can!
Intellectually he is the hottest teacher ever. He is filled with knowledge and experience, and his class is really interesting. There's not textbook, but there are three anthropological novels to read, which really helped me learn the basics of the subject. Go to class, take notes, and read, and you'll be fine.
He is an outstanding professor. The readings are extremely interesting. If you're looking for a mentally stimulating course and an instructor that doesnt read off the slides, he is perfect.
Very interesting professor. He keeps the students involved and teaches using class discussion. Exams are short essay, readings and attendance are req, and there are two short papers. Really fascinating subject matter. I enjoyed the course -- but there is no room for procrastinating or cutting corners with this guy.
Had him many, many years ago at King's College. Major influence for me! Best prof ever...Wish you well! Peace and love, my mentor....
I almost dropped this class but heard it was really interesting and easy, and it is. There is a lot of textbook reading and reserved readings but he talks about them during lecture. By far one of my fav classes. Down side is the lectures and put you to sleep but he is great!
Napora is a great teacher, who sincerely wants his students to learn. That being said, he is overly critical of student responses, and phrases Q's in a strange way. He WILL call on you. Sadly, I don't respond well to his teaching style... I never thought I'd miss powerpoints. (but he's an intelligent super-being that feeds on citations. *Take him)
AWESOME professor! I am taking him again next semester in fact for cultural anthropology. Funny, interesting, knows his stuff. Fair teacher and makes good use of his ta's without being lazy. Would recommend to anyone!
Nice and helpful guy. The subject matter can get a little dry at times, but stick with it. The tests are meant to boost your grade, as they consist of very basic questions from the assigned readings. Highly recommended if you're interested in anthropology or think you might be.
Dr. Napora is an intuitive professor who peppers his lectures with witty dry humor and Oprah references. I personally enjoyed his class, but be prepared for group work (ANT2000), and read the material he suggests (as it comes in handy on the exam)
This was a great class! I thought it would be ok but I am so glad I took it. My TA was great too and everything was really enjoyable, I definitly recommend this for someone who like learning about other cultures! He makes a lot of jokes and wants to help whenever he can.
He's great. Interesting. Loves the subject and is willing to help his students out. He can be boring, especially if he starts talking about one thing for twenty minutes at a time. The work assigned isn't bad, neither is the reading. Exams are easy if you take notes and read. Group project, BEWARE!! Otherwise, great experience.
Awesome professor. Dedicated to involving students and helping them learn as much as possible. If you do the readings and pay attention in class you'll be fine. If you have any problems, go to his office hours, he is extremely helpful, and genuinely kind. Do go to every class. Lectures are interesting, and he has a great sense of humor.
Awesome professor. Dedicated to involving students and helping them learn as much as possible. If you do the readings and pay attention in class you'll be fine. Overall, the class is interesting only if you have interest in learning about other cultures. It is very fair class, but requires alot of studying and dedication in note-taking because other than the book your notes are good studying aids for tests. My TA was amazing!! Group project was easy and interesting.
Dr. Napora is a fantastic professor! He loves the subject and makes learning about other cultures interesting. There is no textbook, just anthropological novels that are actually very insightful. Class is mandatory and all the explain material comes from the lectures anyways. He makes corny jokes in them which is a plus. Definitely take his course!
Dr. Napora is a great professor! He is very insightful and has a real interest in what he does. He is dorky and corny but it makes class all that more fun. Sweet guy, shy outside of class but a beast once in front of the white board. You have to pay attention and keep up with the material but he is more that willing to help.
Dr. Napora is simply brilliant. Although I struggled in his class a little bit he was amazing. Attendance is mandatory and doing the reading is mandatory as well. I learned so much in his class and he gets to know every student. He doesn't just consider you one of those students in his class. I recommend him to anyone who is passionate about anthro
Don't miss any classes before the first quiz, almost all of the questions are from lecture and not the readings. He treats everyone like freshman so if you didn't like that treatment in Intro I wouldn't recommend him for Cult. He is a very harsh grader when it comes to short essay questions. Buy the books and read them on your own; they're good.
Dr. Napora is a serious, yet hilarious, professor. All of his classes (intro or upper level) are going to be difficult when it comes to work load. If you go to every class and do the readings on time, then you're guaranteed an A. He tells you exactly what he wants out of his tests. If you pay attention you'll catch his amazingly dry sense of humor!
Do the reading before class, memorize and take notes on huge key facts, show up to class, take notes during class, and you are pretty much guaranteed an A in the course. There is a lot of open class discussion. I was worried about it, but I think it has really helped me a ton, so please don't let this hold you back from taking Dr Napora!
On the first day of class, you would just assume that Dr. Napora is mean and likes to grade hard. Completely untrue. Dr. Napora is extremely fair in his grading, all that he expects is for you to do the reading and participate in class. He's extremely funny, which is ironic considering he has the most monotonous voice I've ever heard.
Challenging professor but well worth it
Dr. Napora teaches a very interesting class. He keeps it fun by telling jokes and overall it's pretty easy. Just make sure you read what he tells you and listen in class. I didn't really have to take notes and I did pretty well.
Dr. Napora is extremely knowledgable and really funny! You have to go to class, attendance is mandatory but if you want to do well on the tests you should go anyway. You have to read what he tells you. He repeats things that are noteworthy and basically hands you an A on his exams. One easy group project and two tests! Super interesting class!
Honestly Dr. Spike Napora is one of the best, very dry sense of humor. Study for his tests, do the reading, show up to class, and take notes best class I've taken so far
Best professor! You have to do the readings but they are usually short and interesting. If you show up to class and do the readings, you will do good. His lectures are clear and he emphasizes main points he wants you to know clearly. He has a dry sense of humor which makes his hilarious. His class is super interesting. Do take him.
Amazing professor! If you're an anthro major, taking him is a must. Minimal reading, just make sure to speak up in class for your participation. Take his class, you won't regret it.
If you attend EVERY class and pay attention to his lecture to get an easy B. Do the short readings and participate in class for an A. He's pretty funny and I learned a lot from the class. Write down everything he emphasizes and writes on the board because it's guaranteed to be on the tests
If you're an Anthro major and you don't take a class with this teacher, you are doing yourself a disservice! He's probably the most inspiring teacher I've had, and I've taken two of his classes and plan on taking a third. For Ant of Rel, do your readings, take NOTES, attend, and commit to a paper topic early, one that you have interest in.
Taken 3 courses w/him. If you want a professor that truly cares about his classes, but more importantly his students acceleration in their overall consciousness, then he is your guy. He has truly created an atmosphere that every student appreciates. Stay on top of the readings (which can be hefty), attend class, and be open to fair but firm.
Dr. Napora is enthusiastic about his class and students. Great professor, honestly. Attend class and be active in class, read the required readings and you will do great! Very helpful during office hours too. He has goofy jokes sometimes, but it adds a bit of humor to the class.
Hands down the best teacher I have ever had. He is not only extremely knowledgable about his subject matter but his teaching style makes it easy for anyone to grasp even the most complex of subjects. His courses require hard work but it's well worth it for the knowledge!
Professor Napora emphasizes a widely-criticized school of French sociology that will not sit well with many Anthropology students. His beliefs translate into his teaching style, which can come off as condescending and offensive to the intellectually curious. If you have a low tolerance for fatalistic doom-and-gloom, steer clear of this course.
he reminded me of a sales person who gives you this great deal but is still ripping you off. if he doesnt like you he will make sure you dont get the grade you want and he will make every point to prove you wrong. his unfair grading was clear in the group project when he penalized the A student and thought that they were someone else.
Boring and VERY hard class, YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP WITH THE READINGS OR ELSE YOU WILL FAIL & BE CLUELESS. He will call on you! The online exam is timed and it's paragraph type responses so work quickly! He is a brilliant guy in his field of expertise, just expects a lot. Think he would be way better teaching grad and PhD level students. Good luck..
He was such a great professor and was very clear on his expectations. Just make sure to go to every class, participate, and do the readings and you will get a great grade
If you don't answer an essay question like he would/if he doesn't like how you worded it he will mark it wrong. It is nice he lets you submit your paper twice. When I asked for help when I working on my first paper he told me he liked my paper, but when he graded it he gave me a D. I'm a senior. This was my first C.
Very monotone. Assigned readings are not available in the syllabus/canvas. He assigns them the class before leaving that night & the next to read sometimes upwards of 100 pages. He does random assignments with them & pop quizzes so you have to read. It's too little of notice for those with other classes & student involvement. Expect long nights
Seriously, just show up and do your homework. If you are a good student then you will earn the grade you deserve. He won't let you wiggle your way out of working hard. He respects students who are engaged and committed. If you're a good student who enjoys learning about the world around you, take his class.
Dr. Napora has been my all time favorite professor here at USF. I loved his witty dry humor, and also talking world issues with him outside of class. He always helped during office hours. Just read, and take the notes. His tests literally come from the notes. Do expect pop quizzes if the class is not reading assigned readings. Spike is the best!!!
He really is a great professor and it is a great class. I would recommend it to anyone.
Alright so this is the third class I have had for Spike, and the dude is the best teacher I've had at USF. He cares about his students and their future and just wants to see you take a piece of his wisdom home with you. His classes have given me new perspectives, and quite literally a new world.
My first course as a first-year student was Cultural Anthropology with Professor Napora and I loved it. There is really nothing to his class, just read, take notes, pay attention and you will pass. He makes his points very clear, there are no tricks in this course. Just make sure to never skip class because a lot of information is given.
I don't understand how people are saying his class is easy. I'm taking 5 other classes including physics and Napora's class is my hardest. His class isn't horrible though. It's interesting. However, his exams are rough. Class participation is a huge part of your grade and if you don't read the books, you will fail. Most of my friends have Cs.
unpleasant person. avoid if possible
This class was the best I've taken, at USF and elsewhere. Instructor was incredibly knowledgeable, and even though I most likely got a C, it's the grade I earned. Read, take notes, pay attention and you'll do well in this course. The last commenter was obviously spamming him. Take with Napora if you're interested in learning!!
He is just unfair. Period. People lined up to argue with him about his harsh grading. Unlike any professor at usf. Only good comments likely coming from Professor.
The worst class that I have ever taken. The reading isn't bad, it's a given for college courses but when it comes to his tests if you don't write word for word what he thinks then he's marking your answer wrong. I read and go to every class and I'm still struggling to get a B-.
I am a senior at USF & took Cultural Anthro to fulfill a gen ed. Prof Napora is hands down thee worst educator I've ever come across and it is obvious that he doesn't enjoy teaching. He is unapproachable and plain mean. There isn't any way to study for his exams - grades based on if he likes the way you wrote it. I am failing. awful awful professor
It was a little annoying that you had to be at every class, but if you don't attend class and read you won't pass the tests. That being said, it was VERY educational. A must for all college students, especially with what's going on in the world today. If you pay close attention and take good notes, you'll do well.
I learned more in this class than I ever have. Incredibly interesting, easy if you just go to class, take good notes and pay attention.
Mean and boring. Terrible tests are impossible
Very unpleasant Professor lacking in every aspect. Boring lectures and tense classroom
Was not expecting to dislike this class, but Dr. Napora made it very interesting. Tests can be difficult, but gives extra credit on all tests. Getting an A is very doable if one goes to class and takes notes.
Officially the worst professor at USF. Do not even bother going to his office hours. Very unapproachable, mean, and although he says he wants to help all he tells you is just read the book and study study study. If you do not go to his class you will most likely fail. Make sure you get an energy drink if you want to stay awake, my worst class. Nooo
John Napora is by far one of my favorite professors. He really takes pride in his work and he makes sure that the students understand what they are learning. He asks very little of his students, really. All he ever expects of anyone is that they read the material (which is not that much at all) and participate in class discussions. Great teacher!
I actually took three of Dr. Napora's classes. The Anthropoloy of religion class was great! We studied several different religions and it counted toward both my major in anthropology and my minor in religious studies. Dr. Napora only asks that students read the material, participate in class, and remember main points and examples of main points.
This was my third class with Dr. Napora. The reading is really not that heavy and you learn quite a lot through lecture. Dr. Napora is extensively knowledgeable about the major theories and his lecture style is designed to be easily absorbed. Read your book, participate in class, and remember the main points and you will have no problems.
Not a good Professor at all. Just terrible.
At first Napora seems intimidating but he cracks up funny jokes time from time. He assigned 2 books to read for my class which were easy and often interesting readings. You MUST read or else you will be completely oblivious during class and will not do well on the exams. Overall,Napora is an inspiring guy who just really likes to teach what he luvs
Dr. Napora is such a great professor. I learned a lot in his class! In a way, his methodology challenges you to see the world from different point of view. I'm looking forward to take more classes with him.
you will %100 need your books. You need to participate in class. Read the chapters cuz he gives pop quizzes sometimes and will call on you in class if it's small enough class. Occasionally HW. I love him and his classes, he cares and knows his stuff, he's awkwardly funny, and I mostly keep up with readings cuz I love what we're learning.
Napora has high expectations and a dry sense of humor, but he grows on you, and he certainly has a passion for what he's teaching. Not the best teaching style for everyone, but really helped me retain information. It pains me to see some of these comments saying how horrible he is, because he's honestly a great guy. Just work hard and participate.
I thought Napora was great. He has a really dry sense of humor but he's hilarious. He's really knowledgeable and his lectures are very interesting if you have a long attention span. I learned so much in his class. He is a stickler for citations so site every sentence in papers, read, and participate in class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Napora is by far the best professor at USF. He is genuinely interested in teaching his students and has a very effective means of helping the material stick. Regardless of your major, you should take one of his anthropology classes. It is definitely difficult to find such a high quality professor!
I have taken this professor for 3 different courses and I loved everyone. All his classes are formatted the same. You MUST TAKE NOTES. His tests are reflective of notes and lectures. His hilarious and very kind, I genuinely enjoyed going to his lectures. He is extremely intelligent and willing to work with you if you are struggling.
Really boring lectures and a dry sense of humor but he really is passionate about anthropology. Tests are on exactly what he talks about in class just just be there to take notes everyday!
Need to go to class to pass the tests and participation is a grade. Subject matter on tests is fairly easy but super specific questions, based of lectures. You read novels and that qualifies as your textbooks.
He has a very interesting sense of humor and never fails to make the class laugh. His tests are too hard if you do the readings and fully understand the main ideas. Its not very reading intensive. He understands we are busy and gives us a fair amount to read. He is one of my favorite teachers and he learns names!
VERY easy to get an A as long as you read the content and show up. Just answer questions during lecture for easy participation points. His lectures are always pretty interesting.
Dr. Napora is one of my favorite professor's ever. He's lectures are interesting and if you show up to class it's an easy A. Class participant is a must because if it's lacking he'll give quizzes, our class never got a quiz. For writing assignments cite EVERYTHING isn't an original idea of your own. He fill fail you if you don't cite something.
Dr. Napora really knows his stuff, and the material you cover is really, really interesting. His expectations are high and he grades his tests really hard. You definitely need to study, and if you miss a class, notes aren't posted online so you need to get them from someone because it WILL be on the test. He's funny & has a dry and sarcastic humor
I took Spirits and the Paranormal with Prof. Napora. He is very knowledgable and truly cares about his students progression and learning. There was a midterm, a final paper with presentation, and a few assignments throughout the class. Make sure to do the readings, they aren't that long, and you'll be fine.
graded on few things make sure you read the books he assigns and fully understand them. offers extra credit and is accommodating with special circumstances. each test and quiz focuses on one book. make sure you take notes of lecture for an A. he will often give a hint of exactly whats on a test. do the HW! I could've gotten an A if would've READ!
Took cultural anthro over the summer w/ Napora. INCREDIBLY insightful & inspirational. There are 2 books & articles for readings that are very fascinating. Few assignments besides 3 exams. If you read & participate in class discussions & take notes (he repeats himself often) you will get an A. He offers help when needed too.
READ THE BOOKS!! It makes a difference btw. getting the grade you want. Go to class, he often repeats himself to emphasize whats important and on the test. I was always laughing in his class, he's goofy and not a bad professor. Participate in class! He assigns HW on the readings and asks questions. 3 exams and a final, and he offers extra credit!
Spike is an absolute joy to have as a of off. He is passionate about anthro and loves to chat about all things culture.
Take literally at least one of his classes before you graduate. Its so worth it and you learn so much. He's really funny and kind and really wants people to learn and succeed. Read the assigned readings, participate in class and get to know him. Highly recommend this prof
Great professor. Really passionate about his subject. Go to class, take notes, and read what is assigned and you'll do great. No text book, just 3 good short novels. Tests are mainly written answers and he grades critically but gives feedback. Not a lot of homework. Participation is key. Has a sense of humor. Definitely recommend.
Took theories w/ Napora. Excellent class, very intriguing and engaging material & prof! 2 short papers w/ clear guidelines & a final skit which was a lot of fun! Definitely cares about student well being & success, helps break down theorists' concepts well, & strives to help students gain deeper insight into theory.
Dr. Napora has got to be one of the most intelligent individuals I've had the opportunity to come across. He provides the greatest insight into concepts of not only Anthropology, but every academic area that may tie into it, his vocabulary is vast and eloquent, and he genuinely cares about students in his class who want to succeed.
I went in to this class expecting to encounter some pretty boring material. turns out, the stuff that Napora had us read was really interesting and made me enjoy a class that I didn't think I would have enjoyed so much.
He likes to cold call with very vague questions with expectations of a specific answer. Gets agitated when no one knows the answers and gives pop quizzes, which is understandable. The 3 books he assigns are really interesting, but sometimes you have really lengthy reading. Tests are easy if you go to the lectures. Wrottogn assignments are vague.
Napora is a chill and funny professor. No textbook, but you have to buy 3 short novels. 2 research assingments, 3 exams, sometimes but rarely he will assign homework. He's a big believer in class participation and calls you out of the blue, so if you have anxiety I would not take this class. Easy A if you show up, participate, and read all 3 books.
Had to take this as a required class, but Napora is a professor that is passionate about Anthropology and made the class fun and interesting. His lectures were the only ones I actually looked forward to, and he gives answers and insight to all tests during class. The readings assigned are all enjoyable and are now books I recommend to everyone.
Didn't care for the class at first but he really makes some of the readings interesting. It's obvious he's passionate about the material. Just be prepared to do the readings. It consists of 3 novels and although it seems like much, its only 2-3 chapters per week. If you show up, take notes and participate you should be fine.
I really wanted to like Napora, as he seems very passionate about what he does, but he is a tough grader who does not give clear direction as to how to improve. There were countless times I would ask a question and leave more confused. Being an anthropology major, I genuinely wanted good feedback but often found him very unapproachable/not helpful.
Dr. Napora was a great professor who was really passionate about anthropology. The books we read were really interesting and essays were not hard to get a good grade on. If you go to class everyday, participate, and study for the exams this class will be an easy A.
I left the class disappointed. Dr. Napora's teachings have been contradicted in other anthropology courses I have taken, usually by faculty with more recent Ph.D.'s. The material thus appears to be out of date. He also has a habit of making uncomfortable sexual jokes in class that some students and I found problematic.
Dr Napora is overall a great professor. He makes you work for your grade but you will appreciate him for it later. Be ready to read, write and learn a lot.
Unprofessional and very dull speaker. He frequently was rude and disrespectful to many students. He managed to take an interesting course and ruin it with his ridiculous exams. Highly recommend you avoid this professor.
Napora is a great professor and I highly recommend taking a class with him. He has a sense of humor and takes into account students feelings and obligations(such as work). He also provided after school hours and additional help with assignments. Textbooks were 2 chapter books. 2 papers and 3 tests. Very easy and fun class if you read the books!
Awful professor. He made inappropriate comments during lectures. He's a ridiculously tough grade, only has a few assignments. When I informed him of my accommodations, he was clearly irritated about it and brushed off my diagnosed anxiety and neurological disorder, saying that "everybody can relate." Honestly just a horrible professor all around.
Dr. Napora is an old-school professor and seems to expect the entire class to always know what he is rambling on about.
Dr. Napora is a character, he comes off as unconcerned but he really cares and wants his students to do well. He does expect you to be on top of the readings before class and have a solid understanding of anthro on the first day. He is funny and grows on you as the class progresses. I am sad the class is coming to an end, I will miss his humor
This is a professor who cares about anthropology but not about his students. He requires attendance bc he knows that if he didn't, not even the studious would bother to show for such an unfair grader and vapid lecturer. He gives no advice on how to improve but would rather see you do less than excellent to make himself feel better about the course.
The exams are pretty easy, just prepare in advance. The papers on the other hand are very unclear in directions, and he will mark you off extremely for the smallest things. He will say the paper was good and clear, and yet give you a D or C.
Dr. Napora was an amazing teacher. Gives lectures which can sometimes get a little boring but he wants to make sure his students understand what he is teaching. He is very funny and is very quick to answer emails. He wants his students to be successful and will try hard to make that happen. There were very few assignments for this class as well.
This professor is lecture heavy, as long as you pay attention in class and take notes you should be fine. He takes attendance as a participation grade as he knows students will not attend if he didn't do that. He was very close minded, especially for an anthropologist, about properly putting assignment into canvas so make sure you write down the hw
Dr. Napora is a kind man, but his teaching strategies are old school. You have to read to understand the class and pass. His tests are difficult and involve a lot of writing. He lectures every class, so it becomes very dull and hard to pay attention. The only thing that got me through this class was the TA. Also, he is a harsh grader.
Dr. Napora goes on and on during lectures and is a difficult grader. He gives little chance to get your grade up and gives a lot of reading homework. Most of the tests are short answer tests and he looks for certain words while grading.
A kind man with a good sense of humor. Tends to ramble in lectures, tests are mostly written response, and can be a difficult grader. He gives vague instructions on written assignments. Reading and showing up to class is the only way you will pass primarily because there are only 7 grades for the semester.
Dr. Napora is a sweet guy at heart. However, that doesn't matter in class. It's incredibly difficult for an intro class, I took it as a gen-ed. The few assignments that there are, are weighed heavily so one bad grade can tank you. If you don't read or show up to class, you will not pass, end of story. He's kind and nice, but I didn't enjoy it.
This class is a joke. The professor is an INCREDIBLY harsh grader and anybody who says otherwise was a suck-up. There are so few assignments that one bad grade will ruin you. He is terrible about putting in grades, he literally put in paper grades on the LAST DAY of the semester and it tanked people's grades by 10%, some even more. DO NOT TAKE THIS
Rudest professor I have ever had. What should've been a fun, interesting subject he made miserable. Boring lectures that often left students frustrated. He does a huge disservice to the USF faculty. Well known to be protected by tenure and not at all concerned about presenting a quality course. Save yourself and your time.
I took this class by accident because I failed to complete my First-day attendance quiz for another class. However, I am really glad that I took this course with Napora. I learned a lot about different cultures and ways of the people around the world. There are only two Anthropologist novels assigned to read, he is lecture-heavy and unforgivingfyi.
This professor is awful, especially if you're freshman. He's extremely rude often times for no reason at all. He'll encourage you to take notes and then turn around and tell someone to get out for taking notes on their laptop. He also allows for no learning from mistakes he'll give zeroes for the smallest errors. Unless your perfect dont take him.
Hey did not care about the students at all, he do not give extra credit, he is rude and almost made me cry because the way he talks to people. Do not take this class, he is a nice man deep down but not a good professor. Just being honest.
Napora did not care about the students at all, he is rude for no reason, and he does not give extra credit. Do not take this class, he is a nice man deep down, but not a good professor. Very lecture heavy and old school on teaching style. There are many other professors that teach Cultural Anthropology in a more interesting and inviting way.
Through 5 years of college this class was the worst grade I have ever received. I read all of the required text and did the necessary work outside of the classroom and still managed to barely pass the class. His tests were all short answer questions he was a very tough grader on them.
Professor Napora provides great information during his lectures; however he is sometimes hard to hear. This class requires some reading on your own; but, there is not a ton of homework. If you want to succeed I suggest going to all the lectures and participating while doing the suggested readings.
This professor is SO rude. He does not actually care about his students. You are only able to get out of class if you have a doctors note, no exceptions and absences will dropped your grade. The tests are very difficult and often just his opinions on things or his own interpretation of a book or study. DO NOT TAKE.
We go over time every single class and he gives random pop quizzes if people are not answering his questions. The exams are very difficult and graded based on his opinion of whether he thinks your answer is correct. If you happen to miss a class make sure to get an excuse, he will give you a zero if there were any assignments on the day you missed.
You will struggle. He enjoys failing his students and normally assigns around 60-100 pages of reading every night. He is also just rude.
He is so rude and loves to single out students if he does not think you have done the work. Attendance in mandatory and if you miss a class he will make sure to give you a zero for any missed assignments.
Awful Professor. Was very rude not only to me but many others in the class. I do not recommend taking his class, he harshly graded EVERYthing. If your interpretation did not align with his, F!
I do not recommend taking this class. I took cultural anthropology with him this fall and instantly regretted it.Get ready to read at least 50 pages every night, and with very few assignments graded. When grading tests if your answer is not perfect he will not accept it. With only 3 exams all semester it is very hard to fail or mess up on any exam
Professor Napora is funny and cares about anthro, but he is intimidating and makes the class stressful. This class is manageable if you thoroughly do the readings and participate in class. Lectures are super important and he will tell you what you need to know. The papers don't have the most clear instructions but not graded too harshly.
Professor Napora randomly assigns pop quizzes and has made students cry. Rude professor and very harsh grader. He does not respect his students. Don't take cultural anthropology, especially as a freshman. I have asked after class for help many times and he just tells you to read and study, not helpful at all.
Literally, just pay attention half the time and don't be rude and you'll be fine. Reading assignments between every class but I only read about half the time and still got about an A. Just don't be rude or talk during class and you'll be fine.
The entire course is based off the lectures and two readings, very strict attendance policy. But if you show up, take notes and pay attention you will do great!
I really like him, because he goes easy on you and is very understanding about your situation in moving deadlines. Make sure to have a legible paper reason on why otherwise he will dismiss you. Loved the way he thought the course overall, I had a really fun time, but when it came to the gen ed assignments, he was a really tough grader *in my eyes*.
I took Dr.Napora for 2 classes my first year. His classes are lecture-heavy but as long as you pay attention you will do great because everything you need for exams is said in class. The content is very interesting & his classes are the only course I have taken where readings do not feel like work. I always looked forward to them & learned a lot.
For a gen ed class, this is semi-difficult. He's good at explaining each thing he's teaching but that's about it. A tough grader and will mark an answer wrong if you don't write exactly what he's thinking. strict attendance policy and will give you a 0 on any quiz if you are absent. Not too bad however just pay attention and show up take notes
Amazing professor. It is important to attend class, he can take points away. The lectures rely heavily on class participation, so get your reading done. He does assign a research paper, but he provides really good feedback, just talk to him. It is a really easy course if you do the work. He only grades exams and research paper.
Lecture and student participation heavy. The more students participate, the less quizzes you'll get. He will give pop quizzes but as long as you do the assigned reading you should be fine. Tests weren't cumulative. When writing essays, mind your grammar. TLDR; participate, read, take notes you should be okay
He's a funny guy and I liked taking his class. He has a good sense of humor and is passionate about the course content. There's a lot of reading assigned, make sure to do it so you can participate in class (which is part of your grade). There were a few pop quizzes, 2 exams, and a research paper. His teaching style is fun and I liked his lectures.
He's pretty understanding and has a nice sense of humor. We had two required books we had to read. Participation really matter in his class, exams weren't too difficult if you read the material and pay attention. Only complaint is that his lectures can get a little repetitive at times, but he's overall pretty good
This class requires an extensive amount of time compared to other gen ed courses at USF. Do not take this class with this professor if you want to take a normal gen ed course that does not require a similar course load and schedule of a more challenging course. Also extremely disrespectful to students and an incredibly unforgiving grader.
Stressful for an anthropology course.
Great professor with a good sense of humor. His monotone voice may come off as rude at times- he is not. Taking good lecture notes, reading the material, participation (attending class), Grammarly, and investing time and effort into what he teaches are the keys to success for his tests, research papers, and class. Highly recommend this course.
There are few chances to raise your grade since homework is usually reading and there are like 4 tests. The gen ed papers count for quite a bit but the guidelines aren't clear so it's very hard to write. Classes were boring with particiption points counting to your final grade.
Make sure you take notes and participate!!! Your grade will depend on it. The reading can get lengthy at times but make sure to read before tests or group study. One pop quiz. One extra credit opportunity. Easy grader when it came to the papers. He puts about ten assignments into the grade book so you have to make the ones he does count.
Lectures are clear & easy to follow, his notes on the board are not. The readings are short & the assignments are only a few pages. As a professor, Dr. N is condescending, dismissive, rude, and bad at communicating. Seems convinced no one will like him so he is vile to everyone preemptively. A very sad man.
This Professor was the worst I experienced at USF. Boring and mean spirited. Took a great class and destroyed it. Many
He is not a good teacher. He is very monotone and doesn't have the compassion that some of my other professors have. He tries to be funny but winds up being offensive toward people. He also has no problem calling people out during the class.
The course requires extensive reading and participation. Textbook is essential, but lectures can get repetitive. Grading is tough, but unstuckstudy ai was a big help for exam prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding gen ed.
He is very knowledgable of his field; however, that does not mean he is fit to teach others about it. He makes sense and the concepts are clear, but the readings are boring(in my opinion), tests have lots of short answer, and the lectures are not great. If you don't like long lectures, daily reading, and putting in a lot of work for a gen-ed, SKIP
He's a genuine, kind harted person. His humor made the class so easy and comfortable. He has a way of teaching that makes it simple for you to learn and follow along with him. He's very clear in instructions and often goes over things multiple times to ensure everyone's understanding. Would definitely recommend and have him as an instructor again.
for a gen-ed, this class gave me so much anxiety. he seems very knowledgable about the topics, but if you are not actively listening and participating in class during his lectures you will most likely get called out. sometimes he would give pop quizzes out of the blue. most questions on his exams are pretty ambiguous.
Professor Napora has a tough exterior but he really does care about what he teaches and the students he is teaching. I took him for an elective credit and was not fully expecting the workload, but all of the readings and assignments are very interesting.
If you love anthropology, then sure. He is very educated and professional. but if somebody else put you in this class, leave now. if this wasn't your initial idea, leave. you need to read a lot and participation matters. every day you have to answer questions, and he sometimes calls on people.
Clearly very knowledgeable about the subject, but not a very good professor. Class is entirely lecture-based, where he may call on you at random to answer a question.
I only gave Dr. Napora a 2 (ok) because it is possible to pass the class. We often run over time, and he is very rude in his emails. He doesn't have a "life happens" policy (or equivalent), so if something happens, he won't care. I wouldn't take him again, and unless you're passionate about anthropology I would recommend taking someone else.
Spirits & the paranormal was an interesting class that had a lot of reading normal for an anthropology course. The downside is Napora has the most monotone voice that makes you wanna fall asleep. The rubric for the essays are not clear. Cold calling in class. Takes long to update grades.
Although the content is neat, he is difficult to work with. His lectures are monotonous with no visual aid, his expectations are unclear, and there's little to no online support. Assignments are done in class on paper. He is big on participation and focuses on "correct" answers rather than discussion. He is strict, unforgiving, and mean-spirited.
Professor Napora was alright. It was LOTS of readings and discussion, that's basically the entire class. There were two papers and four exams. The papers are weird, I managed to get an A on my first one but completely bombed the second even after using the writing reminders he gives. If you don't participate in class you WILL get pop quizzes.
I passed but I won't retake his class He lectures without any visual aids or available info and every lecture is a regurgitated version of the article he assigned Tests and Essays are graded harshly and essays are graded with his preferred grammatical choices The class felt misleading what as I thought would be folklore was a shaman/religion course
This Professor is extremely dry, low ,and monotone. He gives lectures with less life than Joe Biden. He ask the class questions in the same boring tone as everything else make it impossible to discern wether he actually talking to the class or just talking and if you don't answer his question fast enough he gets sassy and passive aggressive.
Literally the most monotone professor i have ever had. We are halfway through the semester yet there is only one grade in the grade book, and it's from an exam. The notes are so bland and it will be hard to pass if you don't write down every little thing he says. I don't recommend taking this class as an elective because it is not an easy one.
cool guy. funny and very intelligent. only take this class if you are serious - you will have to work for an A
Honestly, the worst professor you can get and probably the worst I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.
Dr Napora is a great instructor, from whom I learned a lot. His tests are easy if you take notes and study, and he even gives many hints about what is going to be on them. Class participation is graded. He goes slowly to make sure you get all the notes. I found all the readings to be highly interesting. He is funny and quick to respond to emails.
Interesting & eye opening course with an average professor. The books to read are required as lectures are based off of those. The final paper is very important to pay close attention to the rubric as he grades tediously. There may be pop quizzes, so reading ahead is very important. If spirits or the unknown interests you (like me), it's worth it.
I'm 30 now. I graduated in 2017. If I ever go to therapy, this class will be one of the things I talk about. Every class he would call on me when my hand wasn't raised just so I would say “I don't know” and the rest of the class would look at me like I'm a moron.
He does not give study guides for his exams, he does not grade anything besides exams and your final paper. He is rude to students that are going through a rough time and he is not understanding. He also gives pop quizzes. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS AT ALL THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVER.
Dr.Napora assigns a few books and online readings throughout the semester. Pop quizzes, tests, and exams are solely based on these readings and he is very uptight about high citations are created. Also assigned an outofclass research paper which can be challenging for if you do not have connections relating to the course. Would not recommend!
Napora does not care about you, and you can barely hear or understand him. His assignments are pop quizzes based on the various online readings he assigns plus the exams are only covering the books you read. Attendance and participation are graded through class discussion so if you show up and do not speak = you practically lose points.
Dr. Napora is tough but fair and often misunderstood. His class uses major projects and exams, not homework. Attend and take notes to succeed. He grades writing strictly but is understanding. I appreciated his course, but wouldn't recommend it to lower-level students. Great for serious learners. I really appreciated his teachings. Would recommend.
ANT2410, although having nothing to do with my major, is one of the most engaging classes I have taken which can only be credited to Napora's dry humor and strangely magnetic personality. All of the exams are easy if you attend class and are engaged. I found his grading justifiable and readings fairly manageable. Rounds grade given participation.
