Super chill, no bull****, prone to the occasional nutty outburst ("If the water molecule were straight instead of curved, we'd all be vapor!!!) Likes to do a lot of demonstrations in his labs (even if they aren't all that relevant to the lecture, lol
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! He is absolutely nutty, which is EXTREMELY entertaining. I actually looked forward to going to his classes.

BEST GUY!!!! Number one prof of all time! Made getting up at 8:30 for lecture fun!

Dr. Nash is a great guy. He's an excellent teacher and a smart man. His exams always test us on what he says they will and the match the homework problems exactly
Nash makes chemistry that much better, he'll make all your other professors look bad. Be greatful you have such a good professor!!!
Not an easy class, but he is a funny/good teacher and makes it interesting.
ok i guess...
Great teacher; great passion for learning.

Great Teacher, he teaches in so many ways so that everyone can learn.
He did an excellent job making sure everyone understood the material. Make sure you come to lecture because he is hilarious!
Good teacher. I think. Didn't go to lecture much.
OK teacher; but some stuff taught were not really kosher - found this out when taking p-chem later
Great guy, makes class fun, explains things very well, one of the best chem profs
Good prof, kinda hard class, but makes it very enjoyable. Made it ok to go to a 8:30 class
He has awesome demonstrations, though some lectures can get really boring. He's kind of quirky so he'll at least keep you awake usually. The tests are alright, and the homework's not too bad, just don't leave it til the night before, because it's occassionally long.
Nash is a great teacher. However his exams are very difficult and are heavily based off of the lab material in addition to the course material. Overall a great teacher and fun class.
Nash is odd at first, but he's just stuck in the 70's or something. Lectures are pretty good and his tests are based almost solely off lectures. Fairly straight forward class. His demonstrations are useful and he has lots of amusing side comments.
Very funny guy, once you get past his retro appearance. Lectures were usually funny, and demonstrations were awesome. Tests are based mostly off lecture materials and homework, which is not always hard, but sometimes lengthy. The TA makes a huge difference in how you do in this class. Nash is approachable though, and helpful in office hours.
I've taken quite a few chemistry courses, and Nash is by far my favorite professor out of all of them! Great professor!
teaches well. knows the material. class can be a bit dull but he can spice things up a bit when he chooses to. recommended
Exams are nearly impossible to do well on. Expect bad grades.
Rambles a lot in lecture, exams have nothing to do with homework and are nearly impossible to study for. Exams have very low averages, don't expect to do well on them.
Lecture isn't very helpful. He rambles a lot, hard to keep interest. Test had nothing to do with homework, completely random questions.
Awful, Does not help in any way. The class is not set up for you succeed. The questions are often random shots in the darks that he may have mentioned in lecture. He is very montone and makes it for a hard, confusing, boring lecture because you never know what it important and what is filler.
Nash is one of the best professors I have ever had. He is a little quirky but once you get past that hes great. Every time I had a question and went to him after lecture he was extremely helpful and would always spend time making sure you understood. lectures could be dull but he usually made it interesting. However exams are heavy on concepts.
Awful professor. All the notes that were given had very little to do with the homework. His lectures skipped around a bunch, and his tests were much harder than they needed to be. He held the students to a much higher standard than it should be for general chemistry. Awful prof.
Great Teacher
Pretty good professor overall. He keeps lectures interesting and explains key concepts pretty well. Exams weren't too hard and labs were easy. One of the better professors I've had at Purdue!
Depending on the way you learn, he many not be a great professor. He uses a document camera and teaches by doing mostly examples, without giving you a great background before diving into the examples.
Dr Nash makes this class easy to follow and is awesome
His lecturers do not correspond to homework or exams.
Go to lectures, they help tremendously. Make sure to complete homework on time and take labs seriously.
Dr. Nash is a really good professor. If you are lucky enough to get him, be thankful. There's no guarantee who you're going to get as your primary chem professor -- and he is a good one. With Nash just attend class and there is no need for the textbook. Use the resource room for practice tests which greatly prepare you for the exams.
Chemistry is an extremely hard subject. Nash simplifies it enough to understand but makes it difficult enough that we are challenged.
Very tough grader, but very knowledgeable. You need to pay attention to every detail in class.
While I find the general chemistry subject to be redundant (this is the third time I've had to "learn the basics") Dr. Nash keeps lectures interesting so I don't mind going to class.
Although I am only but a freshman, I can tell Dr. Nash will be one of the best professors I will ever have. He TRULY values understanding, and although this results in difficult exams, this is type of learning that will stick with you. He does everything right from lectures, examples, explanations, labs, etc. If you have the opportunity, TAKE HIM.
Dr. Nash is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is a super chill guy and he explains complex chemistry in a way that students can actually understand. He plays music at the beginning of lecture, cracks jokes and does great demos!! He gives students a 2-5 minute break during the lecture as a transition to a new topic... very helpful.
I was fortunate enough to have Nash for both CHM 125/126 and WOW is he spectacular. It's rare to find a professor that values true understanding and making "problem-solvers" out of students. Read the textbook, invest time in this course, and you'll get a lot out of it. I would retake Nash in a heartbeat. He has given me a strong foundation in chem.
If you can get Nash for this class the absolutely do it. His lectures are great and I actually looked forward to going. I'm in ChemE and he actually gave me even more inspiration and fascination with chemistry.
Alright lecturer but international students have told me that the way he talks is difficult to understand. Also assigns labs on topics that he hasn't gone over in class, but if you study for the quizzes and show up for the labs, you'll be fine.
I attended every lecture but they were so sporadic and all over the place. They never helped me learn. He would never explain any of the topics, he would just do immediately start doing examples and do them all class. He was goofy and funny but that doesn't help when you're just trying to pass :') they curve the class sooo much though thank god
Dr. Nash is an incredible professor with great lectures and an awesome personality. He really understands what he is talking about and can explain it very well! I have absolutely no clue what his exams are based off of. I think his notes but I'm still not sure. Great professor. HARD class!
He did a very good job of keeping the class engaging and was very easy to understand. He explained things in a way that students could relate to and was always very willing to answer questions! I liked him so much that I am taking his CHM116 course next semester.
The best chemistry professor at Purdue. He explains concepts in detail and in a way that is interesting. He answers all questions and is very open to students going to his office for help. Chemistry at purdue can be challenging, but taking Nash is the way to go.
Great professor! He's really passionate about his field and has an open door office hours policy.
Dr. Nash is the best general chemistry professor there is. Hands down. He makes the lectures interesting and genuinely cares about how you do in his class. We talked about crack and cocaine in class. That being said, he doesn't give easy exams and a lot of the exams are about the things that he says but doesn't write down on the notes. Great prof.
Phenomenal lecturer! Very approachable, kind and funny. His perspective on chemistry is great - he really makes you see the history, structure and beauty in his field. Plus he gives you a break in the middle of his lecture which makes it much easier to absorb the second half of the lecture. Finally, you can really tell he cares about his students.
He is really great at what he does. You can really tell he is passionate about chemistry. Sit in the front because he's pretty soft-spoken! I'll really miss him next year!
His lectures were very dry, boring, and did not explain the material or provide enough examples. He didn't post his notes to Blackboard either, so if you miss class, you have to get notes from a friend. Had to read the book for explanations.
If you're an audio learner, this class is for you. If you're any other type of learner, better luck next time. Overall the resources for help were extensive. The exams were killer as to be expected. However, zero feedback ( and little substantial if you went out of your way to seek it) feedback is given on quizzes or exam leaving you in the dark.
I loved Dr. Nash's class. He thoroughly explains all the concepts and makes it fun at the same time. The exams are difficult, but he shifts the class grade scale to make it fair for everyone taking the class.
You can't hear anything from him in lecture if you don't get a seat from the first three rows. His notes are really not well organised.
Great professor. Very passionate about chemistry. However, not a 5 because unless you're in the first two rows, he's hard to understand. During lecture, write down EVERYTHING he says, especially the stuff he doesn't write down. It will help you on tests.
When you answered everything correctly on the exam question, but you messed up with the sigfig. you lose half of the points. What kind of prof would grade like him??? The TAs are even worse, I have never received a full score on my labs. The full credit for pre lab is 5 pts, but the TA would deduct 1 point for each little mistake that she sees.
Use boilercast to your advantage. DONT FALL BEHIND. He doesnt slow down. Not the worst prof Ive had... not the best.
There are no clicker questions, so you don't HAVE TO show up-- but I'd recommend it. Lectures are not online and sometimes there are helpful handouts. Lectures are not always connected to homework, and quizzes are not very related to homework or lectures. When it comes to tests, "everything is fair game".
I really enjoyed Nash as a lecturer. His lectures were interesting and easy to follow. He made understanding the material easier. I did have to read a lot of the textbook outside of class to pick up on certain things that weren't covered in lecture. The tests were really easy for about 16/20 questions with the last few being tricky, so overall fine
Grades too hard, zero feedback, cant hear him in lecture unless 2 feet away from him.
Nash tends to mumble. Lecture can be a waste of time if you can learn from the book. Lowest exam is dropped so that's really nice. Class isn't impossible but you will have to study quite a bit if you haven't taken chem since sophomore year.
Definitely the hardest class I've taken at Purdue (harder than CHM257). The lecture was less than helpful, and he only did one example in-class but that topic would be all over the exam. Exams were unreasonably difficult when paired with his teaching, and they give a standardized final without telling students with much time to prepare (2 weeks).
his lecture style was helpful and made it easy to take notes
Phenomenal professor! Dr. Nash explains things very clearly and is obviously very passionate about chemistry. Would recommend 110%!
Prof. Nash is the greatest resource I've had at Purdue. His gen-chem classes are exceptionally difficult for 100 level classes but he clearly loves the topic and every student brave enough to take his course for majors. Nash is incredibly helpful outside of class. His exams are brutal, write everything you can possibly think of if you want a 70%.
Not good. Never seen topics and questions as ambiguous and poorly worded in my life, this is in exams, pre labs, and homeworks. Will teach vaguely and fall behind in coursework. Will teach you material that will show up the day before the test. Also gives homework over breaks.
Nash seemed like a good guy but I didn't learn anything from his lectures and I had to teach myself from the book and youtube. If you have the option to not take him, I would suggest you go with another professor
This class is absolutely awful. I learned more by reading the book than I did by attending lecture. There are also no clicker questions. Reading the book is crucial . Lecture is dry, boring and old fashioned.
heard Nash was the man, and turned out to be a mean task master
Dont take this class if you dont have to!! Lectures were unhelpful, I had to rely on my TA and chegg to teach me how to do things!!Even after that I still had no idea what was going on in exams. Also doesnt give past exams so you have to hunt for them, and even when you find them they are pretty much useless!!
I was super excited to have a class with Dr. Nash, as I had heard he was a great professor. Unfortunately, Chem 116 with him was the most unnecessarily hard course, unless you're an auditory learner there is no use to his lectures. The exams pretty much entirely determine your grade and my class didn't have an average over 50%.
Good teacher. He explains concepts really well. The only thing that sucked about CHM 116 was that the concept questions were incredibly poorly written, but apparently now they're gone. He does speak a bit quiet in lecture, but lecture will probably be mostly empty anyway so just sit near the front. He also tends to go over time.
I would avoid Nash's lecture's if you can. He mumbles too much to understand and likes to fall behind, teaching material the day before an exam. I found it more useful to attend another prof's lecture or to read on my own.
Some people find his lectures dry, but they're easy to follow and if you pay attention, you'll learn the material. The exams aren't very hard if you know the basic concepts and memorize how to do a few calculations.
Dr Nash explains concepts well in class but doesn't do too many examples, which are very helpful to understand the material. Exams were harder than you would expect from the lecture and make you think beyond what we did in class. Go to PARTE for old exam questions and recitation - word is he may round your grade if you regularly go to recitation.
Great professor! Clearly explains the material and gives good example problems. Does a good job of preparing students for exams. I would highly recommend taking his class! I struggled with chem 115 (with a different professor), but understood everything with Nash!
I could not tag anything because I feel none describe him very well. I found his lectures VERY dull and hard to pay attention to. I taught myself everything in the course through the book. He also covers material late-this week's lecture would be on last week's homework. He might be a good guy, I never went to office hours.
Professor Nash is pretty okay. CHM116 is kind of difficult and he explains some of the harder concepts pretty well. He doesn't cover everything in class that's on the exams so reading the textbook sections is also helpful. Go to PARTE to work on past exam questions that are similar to the questions you'll get on exams.
Love him. He's hilarious and easy to pay attention to, but also knows what he's talking about end explains it in a clear and linear way. Definitely would take another class from him. The class is hard no matter what so I high key recommend reading the textbook and going to the PARTE sessions on Fridays.
Dr. Nash is a high quality lecturer. If you listen to him and diagnose what he is telling you, you'll find no problem succeeding in his course.
Lectures were not helpful for me. I could barely understand him and it sounded like he was eating his mask when he spoke. The exams were impossible. First time in my life failing exams and getting below 50% which was still a better grade than majority of the people in CHEM116. Seems like a nice dude. If youre not an auditory learner get a tutor.
If you do the textbook readings and enjoy the subject, his lectures will be super engaging. He teaches more concepts than calculations but makes sure to work at least one example problem per calculation type. His demonstrations emphasize the points he teaches.
Best lecturer I had all year. Great personality, thorough notes, and slow enough speed. Besides the first exam, the rest were incredibly easy (I just studied the homework and that's what worked for me). I heard other say they didn't care for him too much, but I personally really enjoyed him.
Very good at explaining concepts, not too good at explaining the math (which is the main focus of exams). Also pretty fun and artistic in lecture, but there is a lot he explains in lecture that can be confusing at times. Definitely wish he focused more on giving math examples in lecture than us having to figure it out all on our own.
Nash was a very entertaining lecturer, so much so that he made me consider Chemical Engineering as a major. He was very knowledgeable and would clearly convey the importance of what we were learning.
Dr. Nash was a fabulous professor who made chemistry entertaining. He was able to break down complex concepts into simple more digestible parts.
I liked Dr. Nash's lectures a lot, very entertaining. Overall, he's a good professor that wants his students to do well in the course, and is very approachable outside of class. The course isn't anything terrible in terms of difficulty but be prepared to step it up as the course progresses. Practice exams and book questions are very helpful!
It wasn't him that was difficult it was 115 as a whole but he made the first half of the semester much worse. His teaching style was absolutely horrible and not helpful at all when the professor switched over I did much better in the cals and was able to retain the material better because the way he taught it was just not it.
Pretty monotone so it could be tough to pay attention. Otherwise, gave good lectures that were completely relevant to exams/labs. Did some cool demonstrations in lecture. Definitely reading the textbook before class so you're not completely lost if you struggle with chemistry.
Dr Nash is great at what he does, however, its very hard to keep up with his lectures at times.
Exams are very lecture-heavy, but lectures are hard to follow and not well taught. Recommend reading the textbook before the lecture to get a better understanding of the content. Exams are hard so study early. Overall not the greatest but could take another class of his if absolutely necessary.
Dr. Nash is absolutely the best professor you could hope for in a class like this. He is extremely conceptual and writes notes with us rather than reading from a powerpoint. He cuts out useless information and really works to make sure we understand the bigger picture. Chances are if you do not do well in this class it is your own fault
Good lecturer. He was funny and made the lessons interesting by not just teaching us the material but also application and other interesting information.
Professor Nash is really good at explaining concepts. He chooses to spend lecture time discussing concepts instead of focusing a lot on math. He does a few examples, but the textbook has a lot of example problems. You can usually just look at a few problems in the textbook and do the homework. There are also a lot of office hours if you need help.
gives good lectures
Nash's lectures consist of him explaining all of these formulas and concepts yet never showing you examples on how to use them. Therefore, when you get to the homework you are staring at your notes with a bunch of random useless information. This leads you to having to go to TA help session or online to see how to actually use the formulas.
Overall, Professor Nash was pretty good. He would sometimes go on tangents during lectures which made it difficult to distinguish what information we truly needed to know. He does a good job of making lectures interesting and he clearly enjoys chemistry.
Overall a good professor. If youve taken chemistry in high school I would recommend watching him. He doesnt go over the math which is good if youre already fairly familiar with it. I watch lectures online at 1.25 speed just because he talks pretty slow. Overall he is very good at explaining concepts but you need to figure out the math in recitation
I believe Nash does a great job teaching the course. Other people may disagree. You need to read for the course and not solely rely on the lectures if you want to do good. Nash has the slides he posted for his lectures, but show up to lecture. He writes a lot more in his notebook, that is not provided in the slides.
Dr. Nash is a solid professor, although I feel like I learned the material better on my own time. He is funny, but sometimes the lectures are too conceptual and don't spend enough time on problems we would have on tests. He is very knowledgeable about the material but sometimes goes through it fast
He struggled with pacing his lectures and often had to rush through information in the last 10 minutes. In some lectures there was some information he did not cover. He explained most of the information clearly when he could get to it.
Dr. Nash had a difficult time pacing his lectures and would skip example problems to conserve time, telling students, "You can do that later on your own time." I also did not appreciate that he used similar wording and the same images from the textbook. The point of lectures is to teach what the textbook doesn't cover well.
Nash always talks in a monotone voice. If you, for some reason, need to go to a morning lecture and he is the lecturer, you will constantly feel the need to fall asleep in class. Otherwise though, the information he says is useful and he does practice problems in class to demonstrate the calculations that he talks about.
Dr. Nash is my least favorite professor at Purdue. He can't bring his content down to a level most undergraduates can understand. The lectures were unhelpful and I was teaching myself the content. The exam averages were never posted because everyone did horribly on every exam. Please save yourself the tears and don't take this class with Dr. Nash.
Dr. Nash was a decent lecturer. The notes he would write down during lecture were far more useful than the slides and textbook for both homework and exams, in my opinion. Having labs due right at the end of lab was an utter pain, and he would rarely push the deadline back, making completing reports stressful.
Does a solid job explaining his slides. Does use examples but I do remember him skipping some of them which was a little annoying. Always had rock and roll playing when I walked into my 8:30 lecture which was very memorable.
Not a bad professor- but I did fall asleep almost every day in class. He has one of those voices. Tunage of the day (songs he picks to play before class) is fun.
He was very hard to follow in lecture and would often ramble on about random topics. He took 15 minutes of class to do a demo that had absolutely nothing to do with the lecture material (although it was entertaining). There were also many errors within the course on exams and lab work.
Prof Nash was one of the most entertaining lecturers I've ever had. Though I needed to supplement with outside reading, his passion for the topic was evident and he was more than willing to help
you are lucky if you have him
Pretty cool guy, but not a great teacher. Goes on long tangents during lectures and does not make it clear what is important and what is not. Does not teach a lot of concepts on the homework. If you haven't taken chem since sophomore year you are going to have to work extra hard.
Dr. Nash was very involved in his lectures and explained things well. If you enjoy chemistry you should enjoy this class. Exams were similar to previous exams and easy to study for.
Nash is a great CHM115 lecturer given the options. He basically reads off of his slides but has in-depth examples that he will do actively in class. He sometimes rambles about irrelevant stuff, but besides that he's pretty good. Best advice is to attend lecture and use BoilerExams and all the review material the course provides.
Dr. Nash was a passionate professor that made the content interesting and fun. The only downside is he will skip over example problems in hopes of getting the lecture finished. Overall, I would take a class with him again.
Professor Nash's lectures are some of the most boring things I've ever had to sit through. He rambles and rambles in the most monotone voice, and doesn't try to make the content enjoyable to learn.
He is not a great lecturer. I had him and I only lasted 2 weeks of lectures until I switched over to watch a different professors lectures. If you have him prepare not to learn during lecture, all he does is read off the slides in a very monotone voice and he is very hard to follow along.
Nash's lectures were straightforward and clear. They do feel a little slow and monotonous sometimes, but the examples and his explanations helped me understand chemistry way more compared to when I was taking CHM115 last semester. Some humor is sprinkled throughout lectures and he is always open to helping. Cool dude.
Professor Nash while being a decent lecturer was extremely boring and more importantly, would focus on the parts of the topics which didn't even come in exams. Exams were weird and focused on numerical questions for theoretical topics and theoretical questions for numerical topics. Even the TAs couldn't figure out what he was doing with the exams
Professor Nash's lectures are engaging, but he tends to skip example problems. Luckily, Unstuck AI and the free textbook were helpful for practice and staying on top of the material.
From start to end, Dr. Nash's lectures were chill and knowledge-packed. The vibe/environment was chill and the presentations were organized and understandable. Additionally, the demos were enjoyable and the overall flow, in terms of syllabus content, was smooth sailing.
The lectures were so boring for me that this was the only lecture I've ever taken where I didn't sit front row because I didn't want to be disrespectful and be obviously falling asleep from boredom. Class is easy either way and it's embarrassing that I got an A- (I bombed the final). Dr. Nash's voice is more monotone than Siri for me.
Overall, this course can be very difficult, but if you ask for help and go to TA office hours, you can succeed. In the spring semester at least, each week they give you exam problems on Friday instead of lecture, and these are super helpful for exam prep.
Funny guy but boring and uneventful lectures. He's insanely monotone. Brags about his pool and car which is kinda funny. Overall, the class is carried by Boilerexams and recorded lectures. If you must, I'd suggest attending/watching Dr. Schmidt's lectures as you aren't required to go to your assigned section.
seems like a funny guy. mostly just reads off the slides. the labs are the most annoying part about this class. homework and exams aren't bad if you can understand the course content.
Dr. Nash was a funny guy, but he was really bad at teaching chemistry. I had to go to the chemistry lectures taught by the other professors in addition to his to understand what was happening. He didn't teach the 400 check rule to his class because he "didn't like it." He also didn't teach how to calculate E° cell the way it was shown on the exam.
Dr. Nash was just okay. You could tell he was way smarter than the class and didn't want to be there. Definitely learned a lot more from my TA and just doing the assignments. He's pretty funny at least.
I couldn't understand anything he taught or lectured about. I tried so hard but couldn't I would recommend the other CHM professor cause they are much easier to understand. He is like train and does not stop at all. He is a nice man it just couldn't chemistry with him.
He was a very good professor who explained things with many real life examples and helped me grasp chemistry better.
personally didn't like his lecture style. very mumbled + slow but did have the occasional demonstration. Often skipped showing the work/explaining practice problems in lecture, and would speed past slides he thought we should know. prefer prof Miller and RK
I do think his voice is a little monotone but overall he speaks clearly and I am usually able to understand what he's talking about. Gives lots of example problems. Sometimes content on homework is ahead of when we cover it in lecture. Not accessible outside of class - one office hour a week and it was during the beginning of my lab for the class.
Nash is a chill teacher, couple of demos through the semester. He moves super fast through material though so we were ahead of the exam schedule by quite a bit. Good teacher though, would take him again.
His style might work for some people, but it just didn't work for me. He seems chill and his demonstrations were good, but he is just not a good teacher. Lectures consist of him rambling on and on in a monotone voice, with no indication of which information is actually important. Spends too much time on theory and does almost no practice problems.
Chem 116 as a whole is terribly unorganized, so be prepared to have no idea how you're doing for the entire course. He seems chill as a professor and definitely a very nice guy, but his lectures are so monotone and boring I almost fell asleep several times.
Dr. Nash was okay overall. His lectures are monotone and boring sometimes but he covers practice problems and concepts and explains decently. The class isn't hard and the grade drops are helpful but make sure you understand the material and do the homework to prepare for exams.
i fell asleep every lecture
I had Nash for the first half of the semester, and although it was difficult to keep up with the slides and writing notes in lecture, he covered everything needed for the exams and I didn't open the textbook once. He starts each class with rock music and does interesting in-class experiments, it is absolutely worth it to do the tedious note-taking.
I disagree with people who say he's too monotone. He's less energetic than the professor who teaches the second half of this course, but I like his calm lecture style and he explains the material clearly. He's organized and we cover all the material in class so you don't have to read the textbook. I highly recommend him or Ms. Miller for CHM 115.
He cares about what he teaches but, didn't always go over everything we needed
Fun and interactive professor, but strayed from necessary topics, did not effectively cover all material, and ran out of time frequently. Left a lot of skills for me to figure out on my own via homework and Organic Chemistry Tutor. Would recommend finding a different professor if available, but not the worst option.
