He could win the best dressed award, but his lectures are a waste of time!
Fun Class....lots of discussion and a relatively easy A....for an ECON class. Nelson can be rather thought-provoking.
Great time!
He explained his problems with only one method. He skipped entire chapters claiming he would only take two or three questions from them, then devised eleven questions from those chapters. He says he will help you, but when you do he confuses you further.
I had heard that his econ 201 class is difficult but this class was a cake class. State and Local Finance. All we did was write 2 papers and do 1 project. I think everyone in there got an A.
This teacher is awesome!! He really knows what he is talking about and that makes for very interesting lectures. He was so flexible and easy to work with concerning grades. If you didn't do well it was just because you didn't study.
one of the worse teachers ive had at UL. Test are way to hard , and he doesnt teach anything, better get used to reading the book
First of all, he doesn't know how to say "gub-a-mint". The class is pretty hard because he teaches almost nothing in a class. He whizzes through the book's powerpoint slides, and will randomly make a worthless interjection that usually involves the phrase "you bet your life." the tests are way too hard in comparison to the teaching that goes on.
you were better off just using the book cuz class was a waste how fast he taught things.
He is very knowledgable and can answer any questions you have. You have to study the book really well otherwise you will not do very well in his class.
Dr Nelson's 202 is fairly difficult. The book is your best friend in this class. The curve is big, but the class is still difficult. There are 7 exams, he drops the lowest. For 202 I would suggest another professor if you want an easy A. For the upper level classes he is fairly good, and fairly easy.
Nelson loves his upperclassmen. The class required 2 powerpoint presentations and a paper that was just about 5 subjects, each subject taking about 2 pages. Loved the class and prof
Prof. Nelson was one of the most interesting professors I have had at UofL. He is a little difficult, but he explains all the information very well in his lectures. he is very articulate and really gets you into the subject.
This class is difficult if you don't have interest in economics. He does use a pretty big curve that helps tremendously. There will be a few quizzes, so make sure you attend class.
Make sure that you read the book because what he says in class doesn't really have anything to do with what is on the tests. The book is great and he will always answer questions. Great prof!
Probably the worst teacher I have ever had! Failed all the tests, but he uses a pretty huge curve. I stopped attending his lectures half way through the semester, and started doing better on the tests!! Real waste of time, I ended up changing my major because of him!
hard, you notice the class keeps gettting smaller as time goes by. He is passionate about economics...ill give him that, he's hard, he is VERY Hard. he curves but ull realize that means nothing...cuz someone ussually ruins it...
Read the book and you'll be fine. The classes tend to stray off topic. However, if you want to tie in the real world with what you are learning he is the best prof to have. He follows the book almost explicitly and is fast so stay on top of his class.
Dr. Nelson is a nice guy, He attempts to catch ur attention but it doesnt work. THis class is HARD, I studied and studied and studied...and i got no where, he is accessible, but I never got him.
I took 201&202 in the same semester with him (not the best idea) but I enjoyed his class. Tests make you think..not just "regurgitation" as he likes to say. I read the chapter before class and then read the chapters again before the test and made an outline. Got an A in both classes. Not impossible, just have to work. He's a nice guy.
Very hard class. I Read the book and went to class but still failed the tests. As long as you take every test he will pass you with a D. He Curves grades and drops your lowest test score.
This was the easiest business course I've ever taken. The grade was based on two powerpoint presentations. He is also extremely helpful and lenient. A lot of people were not ready for their presentations but he gave them more time. I suggest taking Public Finance with him.
The worst professor I've ever had. Painful class to attend. There are quizzes at the end of random classes. No matter how hard I studied, there was NO WAY to succeed the class. He's not accessible. Was very proud to repeat over and over that several students fail his class. Very frustrating to struggle along with everyone else through the clas
Had him for both 201 and 202, both pretty easy A's if you bother to read the material and try to understand it. You won't do well if you attempt to memorize things, it's all about concepts and application. The class is by no means impossible. I had a 76 average in 201 and still got an A. His curve is great and he's definitely knowledgeable.
He teaches well but if you understand economics very well at all, you can miss and not have trouble with the tests. He hangs around after class and answers questions. No trick stuff on tests. Easy to follow. Would be hard to fail with the curve he gives as long as you take all the tests. I was able to skip the final since I had a high grade.
Classes your a complete waste of time, he doesnt take the time to explain any concepts. Instead, he just complains about whats wrong with the current economy. Expect to teach yourself.
Teaches the book page for page on his powerpoints, has a couple of easy tests (if you pay attention and read) that are 50 multiple choice questions that are curved. Definitely recommended.
This professor is a pretty nice man and likes to discuss macroecnomics a lot but the most he does in class is goes over the text book. You'll mostly have to teach yourself but he's a great economist and will clarify on subjects if you need it. His exams aren't easy but there's always a huge curve.
Class is pointless. Would ramble on and on about useless things not pertaining to class. Grading scale makes up for difficult tests. (he takes median score of class and makes that grade a B-) I finished with a 70 average but an A in the class
I took him for both Econ 101 and 102 and found him very helpful and straight forward. Nelson grades based on a bell curve so 50% of the class will get a B- or better. Also if you show up to class he will teach you what you need to know for the tests and the book won't be necessary.
Very nice guy. His lectures are kind of boring but he always willing to answer questions. The class average is a B-, regardless the percent. Tests are very hard. I got a 62% and got a B.Take him for sure
Class was pretty hard. Gave 6 test. Yes, 6. Made you constantly study, and his final was crazy hard. Rambles in class about something not on the test, then quickly goes over his powerpoint. Have to teach yourself. Wouldn't recommend.
Semi-difficult, especially if you are not interested in the material. Nelson is extremely knowledgeable in his field and speaks from direct experience. Don't expect an easy A but his class is worthwhile.
Dr. Nelson is very intelligent and a great teacher. He is willing to go out of his way to help you and gives very gracious curves on his tests (68 was a B in one case). Tests are hard but don't let this scare you away from taking a course from one of the greatest professors at UofL. Highly Recommended. My test average was an 84 and I got an A.
Great guy, fun class. I would recommend taking from his although the tests are somewhat hard (but he curves them very well). He is very smart in the field of economics and you will learn a ton. Be prepared to be enlightened!
Great Teacher!! Dr. Nelson is an extremely knowledgeable professor. His test however are also extremely hard, but he curves them very well. If you take every single test you will not get lower than a "C". He is always available outside of class and can answer any question you have.. My advice is just not to miss a test..
Dr. Nelson is incredibly intelligent, incredibly accessible and incredibly helpful. If you're an Econ major or have interest in it, I highly recommend taking his classes. Be prepared to study hard because his tests are hard and require that you can apply what you've learned. Grades on a curve to make up for test difficulty.
He is definitely a great teacher, he wants you to do well on what he gives you. But he is very practical about the grades. The test are super hard but he curves pretty well.
Took his Macro class. One of my all-time favorite professors. His knowledge of the subject is amazing, almost inspiring. If you have any ambition in school take him! He drops one test and it can even be the exam. Very helpful outside of class too. Great professor!
He was an amazing teacher. You can tell he is extremely knowledgeable in the subject, and he made me want to go into business school. I absolutely loved his class, and although the tests were hard, he grades on a very nice curve. I currently have an A+ in the class.
Said it would be an easy A if we go to class, take notes, and pay attention. I did all the above, but what he says the test will be like is hardly what it's like. He uses a test bank to create test and the material on the tests may or may not have been covered in class.
Awesome teacher, really cool, chill guy and he has an awesome curve that makes the class a lot easier. He also drops your lowest test grade even the final which really helps and makes it hard to not get atleast a B in the class
Had him for both 201 and 202. Great teacher, really wants you to understand how things work in the real world. Good sense of humor and incredibly knowledgeable. Drops your lowest test grade and curves pretty heavily. Highly recommended for Economics majors.
Best professor at UofL next to Fernandez. Seriously this guy teaches with a passion. He really cares about potential Economics majors, and understand that not everyone is into it, so he grades very fairly. Even if you suck, you'll still do good in the class. If you're really good, no final exam for you!
If you don't understand economics well, don't take the class with him because his test are very hard. He give a ridiculous curve to help out your grade, but still a very hard class. If you come to class and show him that you are trying he won't let you fail.
The best professor in the entire Econ department.
Best teacher in the business school.
Nelson has experience working in both state and local government. He has also been at the College of Business for nearly 40 years. Nelson taught State and Local Public Finance better than anyone in Political Science could. Presentations, pop quizzes, and an easy term paper. Lots of class discussion. Useful for aspiring government leaders.
Lectures were long, and in my opinion, pretty boring. There were six tests including the final, all of which were quite hard. But Nelson grades the tests on a massive curve. So if you show up to take all six tests, it's impossible to get less than a D. I thought Nelson was a good professor overall, and had vast knowledge of the subject.
Nelson was a great teacher and I'm taking him again next semester. He is very generous with his grading scale. Never gives HW. 5 tests plus an optional final and he drops lowest test.
He just talks and talks with no stop. Not interesting at all. Tests are super hard and you wont pass if you dont read the book because you cannot really take notes because he is not a good professor. Hated this class so much. Try to take another professor if you can
Dr. Nelson is a fantastic professor. He is extremely passionate about economics and it is easy to tell. Reading the book before going to class and taking notes on what he talks about (not the PowerPoint) are most important. He gives 6 tests and the average grade on each test is assigned a B-. Don't take if you don't go to class or read your books.
Nelson gives out the absolute hardest tests. Our class didn't do well so he dropped our two lowest exam scores, but he usually only drops one. There's 5 exams and then a final. Read the text book, it'll help. And go to him if you're having trouble cause he's there to help. Apparently he grades on a nice curve so that's what I'm relying on.
I hated this class. Hardest tests ever, super confusing lectures. Its really hard to take notes in his class, make sure to keep up with reading, I wish I had more... Avoid him if you can.
took for 201&202. Tests are long and hard, my friends and I got 50%-70% on every one. We all spent the semester expecting to fail and all ended with As and Bs. The final is optional. Read the textbook. Don't bother trying to take notes in class, he goes too fast & posts PPTS on blackboard. Don't underestimate the curve he talks about all semester.
Quite possibly the most knowledgeable teacher in a specific subject I've ever taken. 6 tests he dropped our 2 lowest grades. Read book. Class in not mandatory. Impossible to take notes because he just goes on and on but its worth listening. Tests are very hard but he grades on a massive curve. Its impossible to fail the class if u take all tests
I have taken Dr. Nelson for every course he offers at UofL. He is the best professor I have had. His upper level courses are all presentations. He is very interactive when you are presenting and makes you feel very comfortable in front of the class. He's one of the most knowledgeable people in his field and unbelievably interesting to listen to.
Dr. Nelson is a great professor. Going to lectures really aren't necessary, as long as you read the book, but it's a good idea to go to learn if he pushes back any tests. An A is just 10% above class average, which is really nice. He has a really great attitude, which makes going to lecture worth it.
Hardest class I've taken. Almost nothing covered in his lecture is on the test. you must rely on the reading for that material. Loves talking about himself. If you can teach yourself, then you can do well.
Although attendance is not mandatory, it is helpful to go at least once a week on update on tests. He drops 2 tests, which is awesome. His tests are hard but he curves them well. Make sure to look at his old tests online! Do not talk a lot in his class or he will call you out. There is a lot of online homework that requires much time.
Class consists of 5 exams, 1 final. And APLIA H.W. He drops the lowest two. Curves good. Had an average of 64% on exams and 88% on APLIA. Got a B- after the curve.
The course consisted of each student giving two presentations and a paper at the end. Super Easy, but you'll walk away with some new knowledge. Nelson has a lot of experience with economics and is a really interesting guy. No test and no textbook. He only gave pop quizzes over material covered in the presentations.
Dr. Nelson was great. He lectures a lot and the tests can be tricky, especially if you're already not great with econ. Luckily he drops a few tests and has a curve at the end to help most people out. He's always accessible in his office hours so I would definitely go if you're worried.
Tests are so difficult. I failed almost all of them. He drops the lowest two grades. Aplia counts for a big portion of your grade so that helps pull it up. He changes his grading scale based on how well the class is doing. I managed to get a B in the class which was very surprising based on my test scores.
Test are incredibly difficult. Very lecture heavy. Very knowledgable over Econ however tends to forget that most of his students aren't. There are 6 tests and he drops the lowest 2, but all of them are relatively difficult
Very smart man but class is not easy. tests are almost impossible to pass and lectures are very heavy. you need to read and do homework if you want to have any chance of passing. professor does drop lowest test grade so as long as you dont do horrible on every test you should be fine.
Dr. Nelson is the best professor in the college of business. All of his upper level courses consist of student presentations for the whole semester. These are not hard but very informative and Dr. Nelson is interacting the whole time with great insights. He is one of the smartest most experienced people you will ever meet.
Professor Nelson was very intelligent about Econ, but that does not mean he relays that intelligence very well. His class is pretty boring, but easy to pass. He gives so many tests and drops the lowest two at the end including Aplia assignments as a whole. Do good on the first several tests to cushion your grade and your fine. Very nice curve.
Dr. Nelson has been in Economics for a long time and really knows what he is talking about. There are a lot of tests but everything comes from the book. Optional to come to class but definitely recommended. Also, I would recommend doing the homework because it is an easy "test" grade that counts as a test. He grades on a curve!
Literally lectures off-topic the entire course. Always mentions "if it were up to me the corporate tax would be 0%, that way all the people sitting on their couch, drawing checks, would have some jobs", and always says something about robots taking over at least once each class. I would recommend finding a diff prof
One of my favorite professors. Very intelligent about econ. He is very helpful and nice if you have questions. He likes to make the tests very difficult but he puts old tests on blackboard that he will take some of the questions from. It really helps to study those. He also gives a huge curve and lets you drop your worst two test grades.
Professor Nelson is a very nice, very educated Econ teacher. He does lecture a lot but is extremely knowledgeable. Curves grade at the end of semester. If you need Econ for your major, I recommend taking him
The tests were extremely difficult had a 46.5% average. I would of had a B in the class but right before the end he said APLIA wasn't working correctly and completely dropped the homework grade causing me to drop a letter grade.
Nelson is pretty intimidating, but he curves so heavily. Say the average is a 70%. That would be considered a B, and everything is grades around that. The tests are pretty difficult and that's your only grades so beware of that. For the most part, show up, take notes, and review instructor's manuals before the tests and you should be fine.
Professor Nelson is very interesting and intelligent. However, his ECON 202 class was extremely difficult for me. His lectures are quite boring and the class is not mandatory, but HIGHLY recommended to go. If you are not a good test taker then I would NOT recommend his class for you. Your ONLY grade is exams!!! Overall, the WORST class I've taken.
HARD!! Dont do it. So hard. Thats honestly all. Hard.
Professor Nelson was kind of tough at first, but he is one of the most nicest, caring, and thoughtful professors. Due to the pandemic, he decided to put the submit date for all assignments as December 5th. We had no tests, and he also cut 42 points to help our grades. This may not happen to future students, but it was rare, and helped me a ton.
Professor Nelson is one of the most thoughtful and caring professors out there. For our class, he decided to not give any tests and place the deadline for all assignments in December. He also cut 42 points from our final grade. This may not happen to future students, but it was a rare opportunity, and it helped my GPA a ton. Professor Nelson is a G
Grade is only base on 2 exams and homework. Very nice guy, gave good feedback.
Good Professor but a hard class. Professor Nelson is a very nice guy and knows what he is talking about but the class was very hard.
The class is designed so that you have lectures each class period and regular exams. You will need to read the textbook and take good notes in order to study well for the tests. Being present to lectures is optional as he largely goes over book readings, but Professor Nelson is a very good speaker. Will grade on a very big curve, is very fair.
The lectures are unorganized and he usually goes on a rant about something we haven't learned about. I walked out of the class only knowing what my high school teacher taught me that I recognized. Tests are main grade, MindTap is averaged per question, not the best answers. He curves heavy because he knows we learned nothing. Waste of tuition $
He made me want to rip my brains out so, I dropped the class. TEST HEAVY. Tests are pretty much the only grade. I heard he curves but I didn't stay around long enough for that. He likes to tell the class how much he knows about econ and sounds disgusted when people fail the test. If you need a decent understanding of the lecture, don't take him.
Unless you are a top tier auditory learner do not take this professor, he talks so fast and can't stay on one topic for long enough to where you retain anything. Mindtap only helps so much but you basically have to teach yourself the class through readings and old tests he posts on blackboard. Also, the only grades are tests.
A very good man to listen too, his lectures are interesting, and he's quite insightful of in his experiences in the workforce. As a professor, the only grades are the tests, which, imo, what is on the test isn't the focus of the lectures. Out of class studying is a must for this class, as well as taking good notes.
He changed his entire syllabus midway through the semester. He originally had it so he would drop the final if you were happy with your other 4 test grades, but he changed that 2 months in so that you have to take it. The class average is 70ish. his lectures are sometimes helpful but sometimes not, since it is a huge class attendance isn't required
Professor Nelson really is a kind man who wants his students to do well. He is very well versed in economics. Sometimes he assumes that we know things we don't and can be a bit short explaining things in class. He is not going to spoon feed you an A, but he is fair and gives you all the resources you need to get an A if you put in effort.
I did not find the class all that difficult but that's because I taught myself most all of it. The lectures were disorganized and not helpful. You're graded off 4 tests and a final with 1 drop but that's all up to change depending on how he feels. I got one of the highest grades on the first test. I didn't attend a single lecture, I read the book.
His grades are based on four tests and a final, with your lowest score dropped. The lectures consist of him reading from the slides and providing notes from the online textbook. He is accessible and cares about his students, but it will still require some hard work to earn a good grade. Visit his office hours if you have any questions, it helps.
Six exams plus a final with the lowest test grade dropped from your final grade. He says he grades on a curve if the class average is below 80, but it was below 80 all year and he never did it. All the exams were on blackboard, and all the answers are googleable, so exams are super easy if you have quizlet. Textbook is useless.
Do not talk during his lecture! He will walk into the auditorium and yell in your face in front of 100 students. His lectures were pointless, anyway. The tests are all online and you can use the internet, textbook, lecture slides, etc. while taking the test. Easy to get a good grade without actually learning.
Professor Nelson is tricky to rate, he genuinely cares about student success and is accesible outside of class. He grades on a curve and all exams are take home and open note. BUT his lectures are extremely boring and rarely have anything to do with the content on the exams. Most learning will be self-guided. Smart man, cool guy, average professor.
Take this course! You are given a set of questions in the syllabus (around 30). You have to give a 10-15 min presentation over 1 topic you choose. You have to write 3 papers the whole semester off of these questions around 10-20 pages per paper. Must show up once a week to the presentations which usually end before last month of class. Avg grade=A-
All of the test questions were online. I still go to class because he is very respectable and there's only about 20 who show up out of the 200 in my class. Hates emailing, hates anything online, so you cannot reach him if you have a problem about the internet. But you can call him about test questions and stuff which is nice. Very chill dude.
John Nelson was not a good professor for my first business class. I can understand him being helpful for a later class because he is very invested in what he teaches, but he is NOT good at teaching basic principles. The lectures were vague and often not related to the test, he didn't give any examples of what questions were on tests, etc.
not always clear lectures. learned more from slides and reading the textbook. easily accessible outside of class.
Graded by only quizzes and exams—all of which are online and open textbook. Very lenient and drops 2 quiz scores and 1 exam score to allow his students' room to mess up. Not extremely difficult; however, lectures were a bit fuzzy at times due to getting off track.
I rarely attended his lectures because I got nothing out of them. You're graded by I think six quizzes and four exams and an optional final. He drops the 2 lowest quizzes and the lowest exam score if you take the final. All of his exams are online and open book, to be honest you don't really need to buy the textbook if you know what you're doing.
Professor Nelson is a knowledgeable economist, but his lectures can be dry. Focus on self-study, using the textbook and resources like Unstuck AI, to succeed in this course. Attend office hours if you need extra help.
