Very interesting grad course. Great discussions!
Easy to understand, very clear lectures. He's thoughtful in his ideas and is very responsive to questions. Class is pretty slack.
consider of his students and tries to accomadate ways to better help students. Interesting class.
Boooooring class. Pointless to go to lecture. Tutorials have been a waste of time. Easy high B or A mark, but frustrating, when your time is so wasted
Lecture's are terrible, extremely dull! The tutorials aren't bad... essentially, the material isn't taught well--all over the place... assignments are easy to do well on, the exams aren't that great... a waste! They're helpful though.
Nesbit and his "Teaching Team" are beyond terrible. He uses tutorials for his own research not for student's learning. WORST CLASS EVER.His exams are so detailed that it would take a photographic memory and a miracle to do well. He needs to step away from his computer programs and get a clue!
All of his lectures were completely unclear. Exams were difficult. He gave NO indication or ideas of what to cover for exams. His instruction is haphazard, his notes confusing and his teaching style irratic. If you can possibly help it, DO NOT take him!
Nice guy, but unreasonably difficult exams. You have to remember every single little detail from the textbook, which is impossible. Most of the tested material is stuff that's not covered or barely mentioned in the lectures.
pointless lectures, exams were horrible and do not reflect class/lab material. Uses lab time for own research<---- what the heck is that! GPA dropper. 70 out of 120 pple failed the midterm. WOW. Try to avoid him. i heard this class was easy and fun, not with him.
Uses tutorial time for own research. Boring lectures but also too much information in text book. Extremely hard midterm and final, ONLY multiple choice. At least there are other assignments to boost grade. Nice guy though.
Lectures were somewhat pointless. A VERY thick and detailed textbook. Very hard midterm, much better exam, all multiple choice. Very nice and a considerate prof, very responsive to his student's comments / suggestions, but his ability to teach is not his strong point.
Disclaimer: I'm bitter because I was 0.4% away from an A. Dr.Nesbit is a horrible teacher, but a very nice man. He and the TA's go out of their way to answer questions;however, the tutorials and lectures are somewhat useless.
NEVER EVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM!!!!! Lectures were totally useless!!!!! TA's had attitudes and were not interested in helping. One of the TA's went over stuff in tutorials, the others did not. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH JOHN!!!!!!
He needs to go back to Tech BC! He spends about 1/3rd of the class talking about computers. He made us learn this horrible concept map program and made it very clear that no tech support would be offered. Tutorials and lectures are beyond pointless. Don't pay him to waste your time, do distance ed!
A really nice man who seems to love the material. Although the lectures are slightly dull, Nesbit starts to grow on you. You also have to give him credit because most of the research he alludes to is usually quite interesting. He also seems to be fair and sympathetic.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!! It is terrible! He bases the content on his own research. He even evaluates your exam results for his own research. DO NOT SIGN THE RESEARCH PERMISSION! SPREAD THE WORD!!
Do it distance ed. This education professor can't teach. Pointless tutorials and lectures. Tutorial time wasted being test subjects for him.
Terrible class. I'm a psyc major so this is 100 level psyc stuff. TOO MANY POINTLESS ASSIGNMENTS! Stupid concept maps and his notes contain no information. Tests way too hard (class did so bad, he had to add 5 marks to everyone). Tutorials pointless, don't do anything in them but be guinnea pigs.
knows his stuff
I personally enjoy the material and the lectures aren't bad. The notes are a good guide to the textbook. Nesbit is fair and is very open to listening to students' concerns. I mean, he bumped the midterm avg up 10% and extended the assign deadline. His lecturing style could use more confidence though
Wow, I can't believe how boring a single man can be!!!! The class and assignments are totally useless and you can never show up for class and still come out with a good grade. What an incredible waste of my life.
Don't take this class unless you want to be a lab rat and learn nothing. Don't need to go to lectures or tutorials to pass.
Interesting that this teacher has a PhD about how people learn. Hard, detailed exams, difficult assignments, and he did use one for his own research. However, if you put in alot of effort, time, and clarify info with your TA, Nesbit, and other students, you have a chance of doing well.
DO NOT take this class or else beprepared to work your a** off and still fail. He is a educ prof yet he does not apply any of teaching methods he teaches. Had to give everyone bonus marks because class average was too low. if exam ave is low all the time doesnt that show something about his exams?
Overall I did not think the class was that bad, but that said I rarely went, but still managed to pull of a good grade. John seems like a really nice guy, and while he may be "boring" he does know his stuff and seems very receptive to student criticisim.
Really hard class, need to memorize the whole text book( including the stuff in brackets) to get an o.k. mark. His exams are brutal, assignments ridiculous. He goes against everything he teaches that you should do as a teacher. Take a different prof or distance ed!
this guy is not a good prof he just shouldnt be teaching. it is so hard to do well in this class also, even if you attend class all the time.
I took this class because I wanted a classroom experience to help me better understand the subject. Turns out I should have just taken the distance ed version as the help and instruction were about the same. Practice what you teach, Nesbit!
This class was not a positive experience overall, but that was mostly due to the crappy assignments and porrly written tests. John has excellent lecturing and presenting abilities. The time, however was wasted in explaining computer programs and not course material which could have been interesting
This guy cracks me up! He can be funny (although maybe not intentionally). Has purpose to his lectures. Very clear on what he wants and very reasonable. Downside: can be too accomdating to the 'complainers' or 'keeners'.
This prof treated the entire class like his own personal guinea pigs. One assignment was to use some computer program and rate its usefulness for his own research! I rarely went to class because he was soooo dry in lecture. AVOID.
Interesting content and engaging lectures. There's lots of opportunities to get help. Maybe a little too much technology incorporated and the tutorials could be way better. Lectures have a lot of current examples. The content is thick so its not a piece of cake but its a good class.
lectures are dry. his test are tough as he expects you to memorize the smallest things from the textbook. for example, he will take a sentence and make a question out of it, so if you havent read the text you will not know what he is talking about.
I didn't like that he made us do our papers on things that he could later use for his research. I felt used!! His midterms are really hard, because you have to memorize everything from the textbook, and he just reguritates the text book into his notes. Monotone voice and felt my time wasn't utilized to it's full potential.
I liked John's style, and didn't feel that his lectures were regurgitated from the textbook... he brought in interesting studies to add to what we were reading. I think he was smart to use our projects as research material, feel honoured.. not insulted! I would definetly take another class with him!
His lectures were well organized but I found his reliance on the website very frustrating as everytime the internet went down we were stranded in lecture. Also the website he used for the class was very confusing. The content was interesting, but the tests were quite difficult unless you memorized the whole text and every word of the lecture.
I'm sort of on the fence about him. Lectures not all that interesting, but not too too bad either when compared to some of the other profs I've had. The course was reletively simple, but it did need quite a bit of memorization. Overall, I might take another course with him again, but I wouldn't be too excited about it.
Uses students as lab rats. Totally stupid course. Don't bother studying...I guessed and did almost as well as the girls with flash cards and tons of notes. That said, it's not an easy class. It's very time-consuming. DO NOT TAKE IT!
Great professor. Very clear and fair.
Horrible course. Horrible prof. Take it distance ed, not on campus.
john is a really nice man. he takes effort into consideration. very educated...umm wants his students to succeed and aids in the process.
Do not sign the permission form allowing him to use you for his research! The projects in this class are all to support his research. The assignments are otherwise pointless, and do not help you learn the content at all. Nesbit's class is a waste of time, and designed to benefit only him, not teach his students. Don't waste your time and effort
awesome teacher. He's very interested in what he teaches and the assignments are helpful for one pursuing a career in education. They allow oneself to explore the current issues in education by doing the think paper and strategy reflection.
Would u like to have a prof who: Regurgitates psyc 100/102 w/a splash of educational flavouring here & there? Forces u to own a computer by requiring the use of the useless 'gstudy' (when it works mind u) for assignments? Bores u to death w/talk about his latest Wikipedia discovery or submission? If so, this prof is for you! TA's ROCKED tho BTW!
His lectures are average, but it's pretty bland content. The g-study program he had us use was useless. Memorizing theorists and theories is 90% of the work.
This guy sucks!! I hated this class. Boring.
If you are planning to take Ed. Psych at SFU, avoid Nesbit at all costs. His lectures are a waste of time, he uses his unintelligible concept maps to explain things. His exams are all multiple choice but are so poorly written you will not be able to determine which answer he wants. Avoid him like the plague, I wish I had.
As an instructor he wasn't terrible, just wasn't the best. His tests and assignments were fairly easy but lectures were a little bit boring considering how he spend the entire hour talking about one subject. His assignments aren't actually that related to the course or on the final. He assigns them so he has something to use for his research.
Lectures could get a little boring and he spent a lot of time on one subject. He loves concept maps. The exams were easy, all multiple choice and if you read the lecture notes and the textbook, exams were easy. Assignments were okay too, large topic ranges. Overall, he was a little boring, the the class was interesting and worth taking.
So boring. The textbook is more interesting and is all the tests are based out of. You are not required to go to tutorial/lecture. Super easy tests and papers. 3 multiple choice exams and 2 papers (4-8pages) Easy A.
Very clear explanations and examples during his lectures. His slides are all available to be printed out, and in addition, his lectures are all recorded. However, given his style is to lecture for the full hour, it can get boring. Textbook is quite a lot to read: straightforward format 1 chapter per week.
He is a pretty good professor. In comparison he may not be god tier, but he is good enough. He smiles when he teaches and does a good job. He also knows things, but yeah. I enjoyed it.
wow... sat in this class thinking of ways I could gouge out my own eyeballs. most boring class I have ever taken in my life. exams are m/c but so random. papers are easy, ta Elisa super helpful. Took this class because I thought it would be a gpa booster.... definitely not!
Might have to do a lots of readings, but he is a Great Prof who really put efforts on understanding his students!!
I can't believe people think this class is boring! I think the prof does such a good job explaining the concepts and you can see his passion. Yes, you do have to read a lot to get a good grade, but the exams are fair if you keep up. I would recommend this class with this prof if you're alright with reading
content is quite interesting and the professor livens up his lectures by occasionally using autotune videos and a few humorous examples. there is lots of reading, so this course is great for those who are good at memorizing lots of facts. exams are completely MC so it is very difficult to get a bad grade in this course.
SO GOOD. He might just be one of my favs. Material is somewhat dry so it is hard to keep the lecture interesting, but he used visual aids and humour to keep me awake. Highly recommended.
I loved him as a person and think he's awesome and super knowledgeable but he tends to ramble on and on. The only real complaint I have is that his exams aren't really based on what he talks about... sometimes he rips things from the textbook (which is very extensive) that are so specific it's impossible to study for.
An extremely boring, slow, and monotone talker. Uses the class for his research. Teaches about teaching but is the most boring professor i've ever had.
My favorite prof at SFU!
If you're going to take this class, take it with a different prof or online.. Content is fairly interesting and easy, but the prof makes it painfully boring and excessively difficult.
Provides quizzes which cover only 1/4 of the exam material. Tested material is found throughout the entirety of the textbook & has to be read word-for-word to perform well. He relies on his own data analyses of tests/scores heavily, which felt like an archaic teaching approach. Very mechanical running the class, did provide bonus marks though.
The TM was the person the class kept in contact for Educ 220 ONLINE. There's discussions, a paper, and 2 exams. You must put in the effort and make sure to thoroughly read study guide and textbook for exams.
I took his course in Fall 2013. He is my favorite prof but I don't like my TA i think she is a tough marker. Remember just focus on the textbook and some of the lecture note and you'll survive.
Dr. Nesbit is a very boring professor, and not very good at teaching. He is extremely monotone, and hard to follow. The TA's are what make this an interesting course. The exams are somewhat hard, and one needs to memorize some sections of the textbook.
John's lectures are awesome! He's a great prof and make the material interesting. He's a fair grader, but his exams are somewhat difficult. DEFINITELY read the textbook!!!
I took the online EDUC 220 and it was more challenging and unpleasant than it needed to be. The exams cover way too much material (7 chapters each) and the questions are too detailed and specific; providing choices on topics would have been better. The online portion (discussions) are also very tedious and not engaging as they were meant to be.
Midterm was not as hard as people claim it is. Lectures are very closely related to the textbook.. DEFINITELY read the textbook.... Awesome TAs Very interesting material
Took educ 220 online, the class is quite difficult. Discussion posts were tedious and required you to post 3 posts on 3 different days to get full marks. who has time for that? Also, midterm exam was very difficult and the practice quizzes were irrelevant to the midterm. AVOID THIS CLASS!
Took the course online and yes, the 3 discussion posts a week were annoying but manageable. Essays are easy (based on discussion posts) and graded fairly. The midterm and final honestly weren't that bad- lots of definitions but it was like basically any other psychology course midterm (but I'm a psych minor so I guess I'm used to that)
John is a wonderful human and professor. But I had an immense problem with one of his TA instructors who penalized students unfairly to the point of John having to intervene. I hope she was removed from her position. If not, you'll know who she is upon receiving your first few assignments back. Also, PLEASE study the ENTIRE textbook in detail!
John is a fine professor, lectures are a little slow but everything is posted online. Honestly didn't attend more than 4 lectures and never once went to the tutorial and I'm still getting over 90% in the course. Study the slides and the textbook, DEFINITELY do the quizzes and you'll do fine.
Get ready to memorize the textbook from cover to cover. Quizzes and practice exam are nothing like the actual thing. TA (Mladen) specified this and also gave us the wrong chapter on the practice exam (one that we didn't cover and was not on the final). Unresponsive to his online office in Canvas. This class was harder than it needed to be.
He's okay, but sometimes he forgets what he's saying and takes a couple of seconds. Also, I don't find him very engaging, I think he is on the boring side. He really makes those 50 minute lectures feel like 2 hours.
He was very understanding in terms of possible obstacles in coming to class (bus strike), and he gave good examples in lectures that help students understand the material more.
Only heard from the prof when he came in to say hi during the midterm, didn't show up for the final. course could have been better if I had a different ta. she was very on top of due dates, however (mariah) was an extremely tough grader and marked unfairly. she marked every written assignment in less then an hr ver explained what was done wrong
I just really love him
His lectures can be boring, but he is extremely nice and fair. EDUC222 itself is boring and dry, so its not all his fault. Don't listen to the bad reviews, Nesbit is a nice guy and good prof.
I took educ 220 as an online class and GPA booster. It's a lot harder than I thought! Weekly quizzes, bi-weekly online group discussions that you have to post in 3 times a week for a passing grade, and lots of written work plus a final paper. My TA Daniel was great and super helpful. Midterm and final exams were also very hard. So study up!
Dr. Nesbit is absolutely incredible. His are some of the best university lectures I have experienced, as they are very engaging and contain relevant, valuable, and thought provoking information. His teaching and expectations are clear, helpful, fair, and informative. Concepts learned will stay with you long term, and will be useful in the future.
HONESTLY, the only professor that I had who actually cared about their students this semester, having COVID. He gave us 5 extra bonus points as we did not do as well on the final to MATCH the average of the in class final. VERY thoughtful. Before COVID (the midterm) was actually very fair as well. STUDY THE TEXTBOOK.
John was extremely helpful and was an extremely fair marker. Lectures can be boring at times but he did a good job of making the content interesting.
He is a kind prof, and he is always ready to help. The paper of this course is not easy, and the lecture is not always engaging. However, finishing the reading, participating the tutorials, and reviewing slides make it possible for students to learn a lot and pass. The textbook required, and the digital version is accessible online.
Nesbit is such a kind professor and really cares about his students. He gives good feedback and what we learned throughout the course were very interesting and I would definitely take courses with him again.
He is such a nice person who genuinely cares; however, his class can be extremely boring at times as he rambles about irrelevant topics causing us to be behind in modules leading up to exams. Exams are easy if you remember every single term in each module (20 terms a module x7 for each exam 140 terms). Dmap assignment is awesome! paper is okay.
He is honestly such a sweetheart. I do agree his lectures might be boring and he may talk about irrelevant concepts but he is such a generous professor. He would go to any length to help his student. We flunked our final exam and he gave us bonus marks so we don't fall under a C- grade.
he is an amazing and generous prof
He is very nice, lectures are interesting sometimes with activities but lecture time is very long so you would feel really tired and hard to focus on the second half of the lecture. The exams are easy and you just need to focus on his PPT, don't really need to read the textbook. He gives really good feedback and he is NOT a tough grader.
Rambles alot but is SO sweet. No need to read from textbook, very important to listen to him and his slides; so attendance matters. He gives great feedback and help if you need on essays, etc. Hard to listen to him talk but helps to have a friend in class to go through it together. Read textbook for extra understanding.
I love the hustle on the day of our exam. John was running up and down the aisle's making sure we had our scantron and exam paper. I was truly inspired by his efficiency and the speed in which he navigated the lecture hall. His voice is second to none, very engaging and, dare I say, melodic. W Rizz. Funny guy too, would love to grab drinks with him
This class was so hard for no reason. Take this class with any other prof and you should be fine cause this prof makes you memorize so much for the tests (I would memorize like 200 terms per test) and the essay was so much work like 2500 words with like 12 sources.
Lecture's are extremely boring and takes up the entire 3 hour lecture time. Half way through the semester and we have not been graded or assigned anything, so hard to keep up with what's going on in class.
Nesbit really cared for his students' understanding of course concepts and his lectures were really interesting. The assignments were not too difficult but did require a lot of reading from the textbook and a bunch of other sources so keep that in mind. Midterm and final were not too difficult, but study the textbook and review the slides!!!
One of the kindest and most understanding professors I have had. He explains the concepts well and is just overall an amazing professor. He cares a lot about his students.
Nesbit is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes his lectures meaningful and fun. Exams are straightforward. He is very nice and cares about his students.
Nesbit makes lectures engaging and cares about student understanding. Exams require extensive textbook and outside reading, but with resources like Unstuckstudy, the class is manageable.
He seems like a pretty nice guy but he loses train of thought in the lectures a lot. If you asked him a question most of the time he would not be helpful and just walk away. He also assumes that everybody knows everything to the same extent he does. To be honest, three hours takes forever to go by in his class.
The lectures are so boring because of his monotone voice. The good thing tho is you catch up on other class readings/assignments (while he talks on and on). His lectures are good if you don't understand the reading and need help connecting ideas. If you understood the textbook then it's just a mandatory easy mark for you to show up.
