He seems very withdrawn from the class while teaching, but he is very knowledgeable on the subject and has a lot to say. There are review sheets in the course pack for each test; no questions are covered on the test that are not on those sheets. It's an interesting class, but it includes a lot of memorization.

He is dry, but the class was relatively easy. He uses sentences from class on the test and tells you what will be on the test. Professor Nicholson's class is definitely for those with a passion towards classical mythology. I personally was not bored by his lectures, so if you're somebody who is taking the class because you like the content, you should be fine as long as you study. You'll likely get bored by his long lectures if you are taking the class just for the credit.

The entire class is graded on 4 exams, but they're not hard. Dr. Nicholson provides a list of all the terms/names you'll be tested on, and the exams are entirely multiple choice/matching. No homework, but a lot of reading. Lectures are engaging enough, and Dr. Nicholson is surprisingly funny on occasion.

Professor Nicholson makes Greek mythology interesting, but the class is heavily focused on memorization. The tests are challenging, but the study guides help. Using tools like unstuck AI can make prep more efficient.

Final grade is only based off four tests that each have 100 free-response questions. You have to do well on each test to do well in class. There are lots of readings, but I honestly just skimmed over most, and I made an A. While his grading system is difficult, it is nice not having homework or other quizzes. Don't be afraid to take this class.

While the content itself is interesting, the delivery through the lectures was often boring. Most importantly, the grade is based solely on four 100-question tests. Studying required hours and hours of memorization for tests that would still have surprising content on them. I do not recommend taking this class.

John Nicholson brings you the real classical experience. He is an excellent teacher, very understanding and cares about his students. If you have questions he is happy to answer them. He helps you learn the material well. Studying outside of class is necessary to learn the material well. Latin is hard in general, so it should be expected.

If you like lectures and you like mythology, this is your class for sure. There were four tests and it made your whole grade up, but you learn everything from his lectures/powerpoints and he gives 'study guides' that are basically the test. Chill teacher, if you're sick for the test he's very understanding about it.

Honestly I was worried about this class because of the reviews but it's actually my favorite class right now. Just go to class, take notes, use the exam review sheets to study. No need to do the readings because he usually adds the quotes in the lecture slides. Start studying at least 4 days before an exam.

Nicholson is respected and agreeable. A small quiz every day before class. The quizzes help you prepare for the tests so I really appreciated them. Latin itself is hard and as long as you study hard passing Nicholson's class is fine.

I enjoyed this class a lot. There are 4 exams that are 25% each, but he gives a study guide for each one with literally everything that will be on the exam. His lectures are not the most interesting, but they are thorough and he covers the assigned reading in class, so you do not need to read outside of class. He's nice and the class is interesting

Dr. Nicholson was clear at the beginning of the semester that he would not offer any help or extra credit and that the course will solely be graded off of 4 exams. Each of these exams was 100 questions, either matching or written response ABSOLUTLEY NO MULTIPLE CHOICE. Attendance is mandatory, the average score my peers got on exams was about 50%.

Dr. Nicholson is a gem of a Latin teacher. He is able to balance difficult concepts with a tight schedule very well, and he truly values engagement and gets you properly prepared in the practice of the language. My favourite thing about him was that he would regularly research tougher questions I had outside of class and come back with an answer.

Tip for Mythology: Look at the study sheet before the unit starts, put all terms into a blank Quizlet, and add notes to each term during lectures. Makes it super easy! Readings not necessary if you pay attention. All you have to do is go through your Quizlet flashcards a few times the night before and day of the test. Don't "wing" the tests...

Entire grade is 4 tests, which is daunting but they're literally all memorization. A lot of texts you need to buy (ex. Medea, the Odyssey) but they're all cheap. Unfortunately they do add up bc there's a lot. Honestly you probably don't need them, bc I stopped doing the readings and the exam questions are common sense if you know the myths.

Graded on 4 tests, 25% each. Gives a study guide w everything you need. It's a long list but I found it best to copy it into a doc and then make a "empty" and "answer" side, and test myself using the empty side. Downside is that attendance is mandatory. We get 3 free unexcused absences, and then every additional absence gets -1 off our final grade

Not a bad class as long as you actually keep up with the readings and lectures. You're only graded by 4 exams, but he's very clear about what you should know for each and they're not too difficult. Almost everything you'd need to know he puts in his slideshows, and he posts those to eLC before every lecture.

Professor Nicholson is a good professor, but I didn't love how test heavy his class was. His lectures are informative (even if they aren't the most exciting). He reads off slides everyday. I did better writing notes and doing Quizlet the day before test than I did doing the readings. There are no assignments or activities, just the reading and the 4 tests. There are 100 questions on the tests: mostly fill in the blank, 10-20 matching, 10-20 true/false, 5-10 making a family tree or marking a map.
