Professor North is an amazing prof. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Shakespeare and his lectures are very insightful. He is also a very caring prof and actually gets to know his students and genuinely cares about them and their grades. He pushes you to do your best. He is a fair marker and will give you help if you need it.

Absolutely awful. The entire course was reading 2 plays, then writing an essay. Rinse & repeat. No help, he takes days before answering any question you ask. If you're not talking about religion, you're wrong. Doesn't grade anything himself, and the graders are harsh and don't give constructive feedback.

His lectures were used for this course. They were extremely boring. He didn't add anything much to my understanding of the text. His commentary is equivalent to hearing a repeat of the content of the Bible. AVOID!

I really enjoyed this course. Listening to CD lectures was boring as they were so long. However, I found the O.T. interesting and he was very knowledgeable. He was a hard marker, and essays were not easy. I did learn a lot, and that is why I took the course.

Least engaging prof I have ever had. He lectures at the back wall and you sit and listen. Occasionally he will write a random thought on the board. Nearly every class someone fell asleep, now it was at 9am but still. If you can read all of Shakespeare's plays you can spare yourself from going to class because the midterm is all text memorization.

Fantastic professor, goes out of his way to help his students. Lecture audios are the most engaging and interesting commentary I have heard in a while. Does an absolutely great job trying to connect students to external material. Lecture content is extremely organized. This is definitely a highlight of my undergraduate education!!

Horrible. Assigns weekly five-page essays and expects them to be perfect when this is an intro class. Always rambles about how his kids hate him and how we have to suck it up if we want to be sucessful. 10/10 would not take again

Definitely the most engaging professor I've ever had. Although he would often get sidetracked, his stories were always interesting, and he was a fair marker. I was worried coming into his class after hearing so many criticisms about him, but I'm glad I didn't switch out.

Professor John North seemed like a good professor who is willing to help out his students. He allowed the class to rewrite an essay due to low marks. However, unreasonable amount of essays and tough grader for a first year class. I received better marks in my fourth year classes.

Marks up your essays implying that all of your ideas are garbage. Im in fourth year and this class is a first year class and the essays I've wrote in this class are my lowest marks. Terrible class and terrible prof.

Ridiculously difficult. Expects you to read the O.T. in its entirety with no specific guidance. Papers are marked very unfairly. Tells you to fix something - you do - then tells you to fix it back. 6 years of University as an A+ student and these are my worst marks, with no explanation. I am beaten down instead of inspired. 40% final of whole O.T.

Easiest prof for ENGL 109 by far. You get literally no homework in his class. None. All assignments are done in class, which are very easy to get 80%+ on. His grading criteria is unclear, but basically you're guaranteed an 80% minimum just for showing up for class. Loves telling stories in class, so he makes it a bird course.

I found his marking to be pretty inconsistent (and kind of personal). Two "essay rehearsal" assignments I put the exact same amount of effort and time into received wildly different marks. He didn't seem to like my ideas for the latter assignment. Unless you need the class, I'd look for something else.
