Good feedback on assignments. Very enjoyable course.

Great teacher. Loves Shakespeare and is more than willing to help if you ask. In our class he was constantly asking if anyone had any comments or questions. He loved being interupted as long as you put your hand up.

Very helpful if you can reach him.Never replies emails...must hound him for help.do not take 208c, the course has nothing to do with the topic.

If you're not an avid follower of Christian beliefs, expect to get lost quickly in his course. Rooted in his beliefs, and typically makes sure his faith is deeply rooted into all his course readings. Notoriously hard exams/essays with hard marking too.

In my very first university class ever he said: "you'll find that I'm more brutal than yoru other professors because, well, I don't have much more time left to live, so I don't particularily care what you think about me" You can't make this stuf

Prof. North is incredibly helpful, and makes students feel like nothing is unattainable.

Dr. North goes out of his way to help you. He genuinely cares about his students and wants you to succeed. He might seem like he's from another era, but that makes him all the more interesting. He's not afraid to take a stand that's different from most.

I liked the course and I found Prof North to be a kind person. As for lecture tape complaints, ANYONE talking for that amount of time is not going to sound particularly animated.Other people mark those assignments too,not just him.

Great prof. His lectures were really interesting and helpful. I also found his marking to be quite fair. If you try to be insightful and coherent it is not difficult to get a high mark.

I love professor North, sure he goes on and on about his personnal life but he's f-ing interesting. The man is a volunteer minister at the hospital, how can he be a bad guy? No deduction for lateness, but dont tell anyone. Exams aren't too bad. This man was born to teach f-ing shakespeare!

North is a really hard marker but he knows his stuff really well. His stories are always really interesting. People who rated him poorly obviously received a bad mark in his class...

I love professor North.

All the North bashers on here are the dumbass post-modern kids who believe there's no such thing as a good/bad paper. Well guess what, THERE IS! OH NO! Haha, like the one kid who intelligently asserted that something was the "bain" of his or her existence. Maybe you'll need to learn how to spell before you'll be alotted a good mark. You're cut.

North may not be the most organized teacher in the world, but is passionate, honest, and does show interest towards the students' attitudes in learning. Those of you who have personally attacked him with your comments should get over your academic failures and stop trying to slander him. He has done more charity and goodwill work than you know.

One of the best profs teaching DE. Great course notes, almost don't even need to listen to the lectures, but do so anyways for clarrification. Fair, but tough marker. This is pretty black/white course, don't take it if you like to argue or critizise literature, that is not what this course is about.

Fantastic prof. Obviously cares about his students and loves the material he teaches. Yes he's religious, but don't let that deter you. Use his lectures/opinions in your essays and you'll do better than if you try to argue with him. If you read the books and attend the lectures, don't bother yourself with the study questions he provides.

I loved this professor! yes he does use the Christian POV, but if you choose to you can ignore that, he has alot to say and he is a very very intelligent man. Obviously cares about both his students and his topic...very passionate man. Hard class, but I thought it was worth it.

He's a very good, nice man. He is always willing to listen to any problem and offer advice; and he doesn't come with the attitude seen in most profs. Sadly, he places too much emphasis on religious interpretations of secular texts. He once broke down and cried in class, so I guess if anything, the man is passionate.

I loved John North as a teacher. He was passionate and thoroughly enjoyed what he was teaching. I loved his life stories that he told so that we would have an experience to relate to the course. I find he inspiring because I can see how genuinely happy he is in his life.

Yes, his class was hard. But my personal opinion is that we are taking post-secondary education in order to learn and John North's class taught me a lot. I learned not only extensively about the short stories covered in class, but also about essay structure and the like. I also learned a lot about the nature of life.Overall the prof and class-good!

Professor North was the most inspirational individual I've met. You learn more than just literature. Clearly passionate about what he does. Challenging course, but worth the experience.

I'm a former UofW undergraduate(1970) who found Professor North's consummate professionalism, critical brilliance and passion for literature to be inspirational. He was someone I respected enormously, who encouraged me in my own international academic career. I despair of the vicious vacuity of some 21stC 'students-as-customers'; pearls? swine?

North kind of turns his Shakespeare lectures into pseudo sermons so I would advise against taking this class if you're not Christian, but if you are (or are interested in biblical teachings), it's a really interesting course.

Try to ignore the fact that his classes are usually a sermon. What he says is incredibly inspiring. I learned things in his lectures that I will carry with me for the rest of my life!

Passionate and fascinating man. He does rely heavily on Christianity, which I found really annoying at first. It is important to remember that literature and poetry is heavily based on personal experience and emotions. If you don't have an open mind, get out of his English classes. Inspiring man, occasionally repetitious, and over all very helpful.

Professor North is a very kind and honourable man who truly believes in what he's doing. He offers inspirational insight into the content of his course, and into life - however, he is VERY theistic, and *slightly* narrow minded in his interpretations. Very helpful and compassionate (which I personally think is refreshing)

An excellent professor. Clear, helpful. Course is easy, all you have to do is follow his directions. He includes interesting facts/discussions about world issues, many different religions. And hes also a nice person, when I talked to him.

If you're willing to put in the effort required and want to learn, Professor North is great. He's a little preachy, but he tries to include other cultures and religions. Nice guy, and he'll give you a work ethic!

Great lecturer, quizzes & exams are hard, but work hard and the results reflect that.

I love Shakespeare so I loved this course. He is a really intelligent prof! Very knowledgeable on the subject of William and his works.

He's the best professor I've ever had

Definitely one of the best professors I had at the University of Waterloo. A great guy to talk to as well. Not all of my classmates felt the same, because he does use a lot of biblical references, but that did not bother me.

Professor North is an amazing prof. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Shakespeare and his lectures are very insightful. He is also a very caring prof and actually gets to know his students and genuinely cares about them and their grades. He pushes you to do your best. He is a fair marker and will give you help if you need it.

I really enjoyed this course. Listening to CD lectures was boring as they were so long. However, I found the O.T. interesting and he was very knowledgeable. He was a hard marker, and essays were not easy. I did learn a lot, and that is why I took the course.

An amazing man, both inside and outside of the classroom. He is helpful and goes out of his way to make sure you are doing wellunderstanding the class and assignments. Very sweet, honest, and kind. Would recommend him 100%

Fantastic professor, goes out of his way to help his students. Lecture audios are the most engaging and interesting commentary I have heard in a while. Does an absolutely great job trying to connect students to external material. Lecture content is extremely organized. This is definitely a highlight of my undergraduate education!!

Definitely the most engaging professor I've ever had. Although he would often get sidetracked, his stories were always interesting, and he was a fair marker. I was worried coming into his class after hearing so many criticisms about him, but I'm glad I didn't switch out.

Easiest prof for ENGL 109 by far. You get literally no homework in his class. None. All assignments are done in class, which are very easy to get 80%+ on. His grading criteria is unclear, but basically you're guaranteed an 80% minimum just for showing up for class. Loves telling stories in class, so he makes it a bird course.
