Good teacher very clear, but maybe too many notes
The best Stats prof by far.
a sweetheart
He's brilliant
One of the best teachers! Clear notes, and helpful
tries to give you whatever grades he can. Very nice. The sweetest guy ever
accent was fun to listen to. didn't seem aprochable. people that are too good at math scare me.
great teacher, focused, clear, useful notes, tests you on what he taught you. amazing concept!
he is awsome, i thank god that i have him for my lab because he clarifies a weeks worth of lessons from M. Islam in about 10 minutes. hes a nice guy, very approachable and informative. by far the best stats prof in the school
Gives great notes, but he is hard to understand, and when we ask him questions he seems confused and he doesn't give a very good answer.
awesome teacher. really helpfull and explains concepts well!
A very fair teacher with many examples to guide you through the course. He has practice exams for midterms and the final. Always tries to help and is fair with the marking. A little quirky but cute in a way. If you need to take this course, get this guy!!
very monotone and quiet - sit close
easy exam, nice teacher:))
He's been an awesome teacher. He talks quiet so sit close. His notes are clear, he walks through all the steps and is always willing to explain concepts again. Really helpful. It you study all your notes for the midterms and the final you'll do really good. His tests are very fair.
These people that can't understand his accent have certainly dropped out of school by now! Everything is as clear as it could be for a difficult subject. To be honest, his marking is too easy. A great guy overall.
Wow, finally a teacher that knows how to teach calc. Highly highly HIGHLY recommended.
O'Connor is exceptionally polite and nice - the kind of guy you'd want your daughter to bring home. His tests are fair and he goes through example after example in class to help the material become imprinted in your brain. Sometimes a little quiet and monotone - but it's a small price to pay for a math teacher that actually wants to help you pass
It was a couple years ago I had him, but he was very nice, clear as a bell and his exams were fair.
Everything he puts on the board is relevant. He is good at explaining things, and there are no surprises in exams. If you miss a class you might be in a bit of a pickle thoguh
He's irish so a little hard to understand, but he writes everything he says in lectures on a whiteboard so it doesn't really matter. He gives very good examples and if you do your assignments and go over your notes you should do well in the class.
I dont know if it was him or the calculus but i really did not enjoy his class.....found him to be exceptionally boring. His notes DO make sense though. Kind of uptight sometimes.....
he almost always uses his most emphasized examples inclass on his midterms( just changes the numbers ) . Insanely easy exams. Just go to class and memorize formulas and theorems and you're set !
Very good prof and super easy.
He is really boring in a 8am class and is hard to understand, but his exams are easy just make sure you go to class because his notes will help you with his exams
John is an all around great professor. Quite often he talks to fast, and his tests are not exactly like the practice ones he gives out. Practice from the text book can really help and if you don't understand something in class...put up your hand and ask in class, he is great with that, he is also great with getting help outside of class.
GREAT PROF! Going to his lectures is very helpful because all of his examples help with assignments. The midterm was very straight forward. The final had alot more long answer but there was nothing on it that he had not gone over. He is around after class and always answers your questions.
His notes really help but he talks too fast sometimes.Anyway,he's patient when answering questions.
AWESOME.. i really enjoyed this course. John speaks a little fast, and has an irish accent, but i thought that made class more interesting =) He is a VERY good instructor, always willing to give extra help.. make sure to do all assignments and go to class- theyre really good practice for exams. John is AWESOME!!! =)
Great Prof. very good at breaking down problems step by step making them alot easier to remember. Ditto to the fact that sometimes he goes a little fast but will take time to answer all questions etc.
He is a very good professor, has good notes and explains clearly the topics covered. He is very helpful outside class.
Excellent math teacher! While calculus is a difficult subject to teach and learn, John does an outstanding job teaching it. I would recommend him for anything taking calculus courses further than MATH 113 (MATH 115, 214, 215).
AMAZING PROF! Go to class and do the assignments and this class is a breeze.
AMAZING!! VERY HELPFUL AND SUCH A GREAT GUY. listen and do your assignments and you'll do great
This calculus teacher can't even factor correctly. Is this some kind of joke?? He doesn't explain anything that he slaps on the board, and you're pretty much left to learn by yourself. i looked to my colleagues left and right, front and back and we've all come to the conclusion that he is a teacher that is impossible to understand. Drop the class
This professor is amazing!!!! The only downside is that it can be a little difficult to understand him because he mumbles a little.
He's kind of hard to understand even sitting at the front. He mumbles and talks very fast. He has a little bit of an accent but its not bad. His notes are great! But DO NOT miss a class because all his notes are in class.
Mr. O'Connor is great and genuinely cares about his students' success. He is available during office hours and even fielded my questions after class. His notes are well-written and adhere to the sectioning sequence of the textbook. He works examples pitched at a higher difficulty and also emphasizes applications to engineering. Great class and prof
he doesn't know how to teach, he acts like he is scared of the board. doesn't explain well. run away from his class and find another teacher because you may fail.
Love this guy. His notes are very well detailed and his examples are the tough questions so if you take notes, and listen, you're pretty much set. He also really helps when you ask questions. awesome teacher, i would take his class over and over again.
very good teacher and he posts all lectures online. very straightforward exams!
Perfect teacher for 8 o clock class. Stats was a breeze and i did pretty well.
If you do well in his class he will save you from the upcoming rise of machines. He will save humanity from Skynet.
Great guy, I'd really recommend him. Helped me through some questions at 11pm the night before an exam when I was cramming. As long as you copy down what he writes and use it to study, you should be good.
He reviews the material taught in previous classes at the beginning of each class which is nice. I find it hard to study for math - I just don't know how! Having him review stuff really helps make up for that, along with the weekly assignments that force you to actually practice and become familiar with the material.
Was clear in his explanation of things, and very straight-forward. The assignments were good practice, and he posts the questions on Blackboard so the textbook wasn't necessary. He got behind in his lectures, and we did not finish everything but the final did not include those chapters. His exams are very fair if you do practice questions.
I loved John O'Connor as a prof. His lectures clearly demonstrate how to work through the problems. There are weekly assignments which end up bringing up your average, so try and do well on them. The practice midterms and finals are exactly like the real tests, so know those practice questions.
Great guy! Has a bit of an accent so understanding him was a hard at first but you'll get used to it. Lectures explained everything clearly. Weekly assignments were a breeze. Practice questions are similar to the midterm and final questions, so do them and you'll be fine.
John is a really great guy, but he mumbles and writes on the whiteboard a lot. He's very quite. If you go to his office hours he is willing to help and he answers emails quickly. There is weekly homework assignments. His practice midterms and finals were identical to his exams. Overall, would take again.
Great Prof! If you attend the lectures, read the notes carefully and do all the assignment, the exams are not too difficult to get through! The practice midterms and finals definitely helped prepare me for the exams. It also helps to meet a study buddy to go over assignments with!
Class consists of him copying his notes from online on to the board. Mumbles a lot. Text book not needed as he posts all the homework questions online. Practice tests similar to exams.
I am terrible at math and I got a B in his class. He is one of the most helpful teachers I have ever taken a class with and between his office hours and being in the help center, he was very easy to talk to. If you have to take into stats and you are not that great at math like I am, take this guys class. He is seriously great.
He doesn't expand from what he's doing on the board, making it super confusing. I think he should explain more of what he's doing on the board instead of saying things like"The derivative of so and so is blank, because it work." And lastly he talks quietly and mumbles so it's hard to hear important points in the lecture.
Really good prof! Writing is messy but easy to get accustomed to it. Speaks fast but always goes back to explain if ask him. Covers a lot in one day so don't skip.
I wasn't a fan of his teaching style. He writes notes on the board and he doesn't post anything on blackboard so attendance is essential to passing. He did examples in class but if the examples aren't anything like the homework questions, good luck.
Very helpful math prof when you need him. Covers a lot in a class and does not posts his notes on blackboard so don't skip. Very generous when marking the midterms. Gives examples of the application of the topics in engineering.
His writing is messy, and he mumbles a lot, and he has a little it of an accent, though those are things you can get used to. He goes through notes really fast, and doesn't post on blackboard, so get you're gonna have to write really quickly. Overall, not a bad prof.
You do need to attend class because the textbook is USELESS, don't expect not to show up and get a good grade, thats not going to happen. He mumbles A LOT so it is super hard to understand him. He's okay, better than most of the math profs in the university. Would recommend you to take Elaine for this course, she's great.
John is a very nice person. His exams are pretty much similar to his practice midterms and examples used in class. He is always willing to help you out if you need it, and is great with you asking questions during class time. However he does tend to mumble so try and get a seat up front.
Super nice and works at a very nice pace during lectures. Don't skip lectures but his practice exams are just like his exam!!
Super hard class but he's definitely one of the best professors out of the options you have. Definitely go to class because you will be lost if you don't. He does do a little review of what you learned in the last class at the beginning of every class which was nice. Overall really helpful!
Good prof, likes lunch alot
John is a caring professor. Homework tends to be harder than the midterms, so you get good practice. Use the textbook to practice as well. However, he posts old midterm exams online for you to practice from, and they are very similar to the actual exam. Very fair marker, only takes off a fourth of a mark for forgetting a negative or number.
Mr O'Connor was a stellar prof. Weekly homework assignments but they are certainly beneficial. He talks fast in class sometimes but will always go back and re-explain if needed. Super smart and caring guy
He has a very monotone voice and mumbles quite a bit. The material is easy and I only needed it for Math 114. Going to class is not mandatory if you actually understand the material. Practice exams were exactly like the test! (Overall sorta boring but easy)
Everything about this course was very organized and well thought out. He explains why we learn each thing and gives us examples on them as well. His notes are also very helpful.
John speaks too fast and tends to mumble a lot. Its nice that he writes a lot of stuff on the board but his way of solving problems could be better. To be fair though, his exams are not super difficult and just like what other have said, his exams are just like his practice exams.
Dr. John O'connor is a good math prof. His notes are very helpful. You just need review all his notes before take his exam. He always make hard question easier. He is a very patient and kind prof. I would definitely recommend you to take his class.
If you haven't taken calculus in high school then you're going struggle a little. Only because he's very monotoned and mumbles A LOT. His writing isn't the best, I had to write a legend in my notes. Other than that he's nice and will help you 1 on 1 if you don't understand. The midterm was basically the practice midterm but with different numbers.
Lectures could be a bit boring but he always provided EXCELLENT notes on Blackboard, so showing up to class wasn't necessary. Practice midterm and final exam were very similar to the actual tests. Quite a lot of homework, but all STAT151 classes have the same assignments and sometimes he would give a few extra days to complete them.
He always willing to give 1 on 1 help and answers email thoroughly and quickly even in evenings. He says text book is not mandatory - and technically its not but I dont know how I would get by without it. He teaches based on it so if you miss class you can just see the book. Also posts notes on BB. Grades based on many things. Tests fair.
Didn't enjoy his lectures as they were very boring/dry as he is a mumbler. Detailed notes posted on blackboard so the lecture is not mandatory. Personally I found the textbook very useful, especially when it came to Hypothesis Testing as it broke it down in steps very well. His midterm and final were very fair, similar to his examples in notes.
John talks pretty monotone and doesn't often look up. Not a super engaging guy. The content is always very heavy and you will most likely struggle if you didn't take calc in high school, like me. The textbook is a necessity. The quizzes are composed of 2-3 questions so if you get one wrong, good luck.
Monotone, dry, mumbles. Is constantly corrected when doing examples on the board, doesn't sound confident in what he says. You will have a rough time if you've never done calculus before. Nothing engaging about the lectures, just straight information with little examples to help understand whats being taught. Quizzes and Midterm are very punishing.
A very amazing prof. He's very quiet and monotoned, but I found his lectures very useful. He does not post any lecture notes on blackboard so you have to attend his classes or otherwise you'll miss out a lot. His quizzes were somewhat hard because of the true/false but the midterm and final were exactly based on the practice exams he's given us.
O'Connor was an awesome teacher, my main advice would be to listen in class, review at home and you'll do great. He has assignments due weekly, a midterm, and the final.
Notes are now PROVIDED and they are SO GREAT. Legit showed up to like 3 classes and used the notes and ended with a really high grade. You definitely can too! He mumbles a lot in class so I didn't go cause I didn't understand what he was saying. How to do well? Go over the notes, do practise exams, and go over assignments if you can. Good luck!
He's a great guy. Got him during the covid era so maybe he's easier compared to an in class session. Makes things clear and is approachable and kind. Definitely glad I swapped into his class.
John is a kind and understanding prof. He is very responsive when you need help through email, especially during this strange COVID time. Although he speaks quite fast in his lecture videos, it is still easy to understand the concepts since John makes it very clear. Practice exercises are helpful and not too heavy. He is also a fair grader.
Calculus is hard, and O'Connor makes it EASY. I took high school Calculus before and failed, but I did GREAT in John's class. There are assignments due every week, and some questions are challenging, but they prepare you for quizzes and the final. The final was light work because O'Connor teaches that well. He is a bit monotone though.
He is an amazing prof for Math 099. He posts lecture videos and notes on Blackboard so they are accessible whenever you like. The quizzes are very straightforward and easy. Assignments were fair as well. Overall, he is a great professor.
John was an amazing prof, his handwriting could definitely improve, but his lectures were easy to follow along with. I never did good in high school math but he broke down concepts and made them very easy to understand. I feel confident going into MATH114 after this class. As long as you did the homework, you were sure to pass tests.
Lectures are hard to understand but quizzes and midterms are easy.
Calculus? MacEwan says 50% fail rate, 114 that is. Take John that percentage is non-existent. He is a meticulous professor that goes into detail with his steps, he skips steps if means necessary. Out of the profs in the math/stats department, he has the greatest handwritten notes (uses an iPad too bonus). Fair tests, accessible at most times, 10/10
John O'Conner is a very knowledgeable statistics professor. He knows what he's talking about and can express it well. Although sometimes it can be hard to hear him and he isn't highly engaging in class, he's always willing to help outside class to clear up any confusion. I would recommend him if you are willing to take many notes.
Genuine guy, gives you all the tools that he can for you to succeed.
Lots of homework and assignments, although that's simply the nature of the class, not something unique to him. Lectures were helpful. Assignments were easy to complete based on the information from his lectures. I enjoyed listening to him speak - his accent is engaging.
If you read ahead it makes the lectures much easier to follow.
