Get ready to do a lot of writing with in class notes and of the reading textbook. Two papers are due, Dr Oren says that he grades the papers but his TAs grade them like we are in a graduate level writing class so be prepared to get below an 80% -nothing higher. Your final grade will shock you if you are use to getting As in your classes.

I honestly loved Prof. Orens. Unfortunately, our class became online due to Corona, but went smoothly. He does not use Blackboard, so your only contact is through email, but his lectures are very thorough. He does this interesting thing for lectures, where he writes a list of topics to talk about. He'll shown one at a time and then lecture about it

He doesn't use BB, so attendance is crucial, but his lectures were interesting. Grade consists of 4-5 quizzes, midterm paper, and a final paper. The quizzes are VERY similar to the study guides the GTAs email you. The papers are around 2-3 pages max, answering a few questions from a prompt. Fair warning, they grade the papers rather harshly.

To be honest, I never really liked history. But Dr. Orens' passion for this field is probably one of the greatest things about him. However, because this was an online class, it can get quite boring. Lectures are long, but may be interesting to some. Quizzes and exams aren't too bad as well.

I almost failed this class because of this professor. He expects his students to think like philosophers & write like historians in a 100 level class. It doesn't matter how good you write, he will pull out flaws. His teaching & grading will make you hate history class. I struggled in this class more than I struggled in Cal 2.
