Dr. Orta is a wonderful professor who values all of his students. His exams are open book and so all you need to do is show up for class and take good notes, do bonus questions for extra credit, do 1 easy report, study & you'll get an A in the class.
easy but work intesive class, need to show up for class everytime (not required but advised). open book test, but if you dont take note during class, you wont get good grade
feel cheated paying for his $60 "text", 1st exam is easy but not the 2nd one. Getting B is easy but not A
Really easy class, but a jerk! Stear clear of him! He like to joke around by degrading you infront of fellow students
Very nice guy. Very easy class. Had a lot of fun learning. Take notes. They do help. Make a good study sheet too. Easy A, yes and no. Study for the final that's a must. That's the hardest out of three test he will give you. Stay on his good side. Not a jerk! If your nice then he is nice. Peace
good teacher
Nice teacher. take good notes and study sheets.
This guy is a waste of tax-payer's money! He rips students off by forcing them to buy his crappy textbook (God forbid you use last quarter's book), makes you wait in line to take a test and is the 2nd worst teacher I've ever had in all my life.
very knowledgable instructor
nice teacher, loves to wear a hawaiian shirt comes originally from cuba and fun teacher. tests are open book, 1st test n final are easy, but 2nd test pretty difficult. I got F for 2nd test, but amazingly I got a B on my transcript.
he was crazy. he tried to teach way too many things at once. he's just nutts.
he is not that easy to get an A. you have to be a nursing major, or nutritionist major. He expects you to know about his subject. Even though it's an open book test, the answer will not be in the text. it's all about general thing you have to know. But, first test was OK. If somebody ask a question, he just nodd his head. so what's the answer then?
he's a good teacher, not a push over. his tests are easy as long as you take the time to prepare for them and not lazy. 3 tests, 1 paper, 25-30pts extra credit. only lazy people don't pass his class.
I am an accounting major, and i got an A. I took a nutrietion course for ge though. Be prepared for the exams. made you own table of content really helps.
very interesting class
He was a good teacher, but if you missed a class you could hurt your grade. His book has a lot of inofmation and he keeps you entertained.
Prof Orta is excellent. Among all the nutrition profs, he's one of the best. He teaches you about different age groups, which WILL be used in nursing. I took his class quite a while back & still refer to his book for dataforms. He eases the stress by giving tests open book-just tab the book before taking the tests.
Good lecturer; you'll leave lecture knowing a lot about now to eat healthy and look good. His tests are open notes, so make a good index. Also, with regards to the research paper-- Put the headings on the paper!!
Easy class, but I hate him!
this dude is good. he has 30 bonus points which will definately help grade. make sure attend class daily cause if absent he won't allow you to get bonus (each one 5 pts. ) his test are open book but the book is freakin huge so you must create a good note system.( perhaps stamp its or something ) . i recommend him since 30 bonus points helps
He's a cool guy. If you want to take an easy upper theme class, you have to take him. His tests are open book and open notes. He even gives out bonus points for attending class to help you out for the tests. There's three midterms and one term paper. Not a very hard class, just have to organized and prepared for the tests.
He is an excellent teacher. He works very hard to make sure everybody is learning. Very entertaining and fun class. Tests are very fair. He is always there to help you. I am having a great experience in this class. Good teacher and a great human being. Thank you for a wonderful class.
He is very easy. Test are easy. HE is strict, especially in class! But if you take notes test will be easy. You can use your book during test!!!This class was interesting.
I can't believe this jerk ignored the fire alarm and retained all the students in the room cause his exam was in progress. He is mean to his students cause he claimed he's from a communist country. He shuffles the contents of 'his book' every quarter in order to make u buy it(about 100 pages downloaded from mypyramid.gov). Don't recommend him!!

This professor is popular but I do not think he is easy and I do no think he is good teacher. He forced you to buy the book and the book is no use at all. I learned nothing after his class. NOT Recommended!!!

lots of material to learn in this class, midterm and final are open book but don't think you got it made cause textbook is 783 pages, textbook is mandatory-he will give bonus assignments in class for which you will need to turn in your textbook pages, he is very strict: don't arrive late, talk with others in class, or you will get points off!
The class moves at lightening speed. The project was all about following his directions when it could have been about the role of nutrition in our personal health. It was a very disappointing experience. His tests are all about how well you organize the book - the questions aren't that great and he hides the answers so you really have to dig.

U need 2 go 2 EVERY class meeting or U will be completely lost & fail. He uses a book he put together $80.00. U need 2 be awake & alert in order 2 keep up bc He moves VERY fast. One outline, VERY EASY, he topic is assigned & format is clear. 2 midterms & final 50questions/each. If youre not an organized person, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Class sucks.Show up to every class,no excuses. The test are 50 questions, open book but you have to flip through every page just to find the answer, who cares if you have a table of content and label your book.Highlight every thing he talks about.Good thing you get bonus points.Don’t take him and he’s not an approachable guy, what he says goes
NTRS 351 is an extremely easy class. Dr. Orta is very approachable and friendly. The tests are straightforward, so you shouldn't have any trouble getting an A.
Class and prof are USELESS. He talks to people like they're morons. His book (which he just plagarized off the web) is not organized and is not useful. WASTE OF TIME and ANNOYING. He's creepy too, showed pictures of naked children, supposedly to show nutrition related diseases, but I think he's sick. I'm actually going to talk to his boss. AWFUL!!
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS CLASS! By far the worst college class I've ever taken. He wrote his own book, the school shouldnt allow him to use it. I got more understanding from my city college Nutrition class than this one. Project is unclear; unrelated to material. Get extra points by turning in pages of the text. Open book tests; book doesnt help.
RUDE PROFESSOR. ARROGANT AND UNFAIR. HIS BOOK IS NOT USEFUL AND HE HAS POOR TEACHING SKILLS AND PEOPLE RELATION SKILLS. HIS TESTS WERE DISGUSTING IN DETERMINING WHAT STUDENTS LEARN IN HIS CLASS. LIKE A GROUCHY OLD MAN! NEVER TAKE HIM!!!
This class is an easy A. You do need to buy the book because thats what he bases his lectures on and you also turn in sheets from the book for extra credit. you dont have to go to class everyday but you never know when he's gonna give extra credit. Oh and he also has a video for every topic he goes over. if u want an easy A take his class
Good professor. Easy to get a good grade (at least B). You should come to class as many as possible for getting a good grade.
The test are nothing like the practice test. He gives out different versions, that vary in difficulty, because during the final some people left within 5 minutes, while others stayed there a very long time.
worst teacher in CSULA, his book isnt his work, he discriminates certain races, plays favorites, gives easy tests to those he likes and hard tests to people he doesnt...AVOID HIM!!
U should definetely go to class becuz he gives extra credit during class, which can bring your grade up significantly. Tests are open book but difficult. HW is not mandatory. The project is due in the 2nd week for extra credit. Keep a copy of ur project cuz he can lose it. easy class, he gives all kinds of extra credit to get u an A.
This is an easy A class. You just need to go to his class and do the homeworks. Attendance is mandatory. His exam is easy.
Orta's class can be boring at times, but you learn a lot. The book is really useful! Bring the book to class all the time and do the homework so that you can maximize the wonderful extra credit he offers! Participate in class and it will be a lot better for you!
At first, I thought he was rude, but now I think that he is very friendly and helpful professor. Attendance is mandatory and you must do the homeworks to get an A. His exam is pretty easy.
He is very rude to male students but quite the contrary to female students. he often dates some of his former students, even when they are married and have families. Very Low character.
Just into the second week of lecture and so far I'm hating the way he teaches--very disorganized and his BS book doesn't help much either.
this guy is funny. at first you will think that he is super rude!! DO NOT be late! he will embrass you! but after a while, i thought he's freaken hilirious!! we laugh at him all the time. easy class, do the hw assignments, lots of extra credit in class. tests r pretty easy. final was the same as the practice test.
He's not rude, but I do think his obsession with military punctuality can be both good & bad. Putting latecomers on the spot encourages ppl to be on time, but if you get there 1 min. late it may discourage you from attending class altogether bc you don't feel like being the laughingstock of the day... which is why I am here instead of class.
He def has a different personality that you should take lightly, if anything. A little distracting because lectures are basically shuffling through his textbook. Just be there in class with assignments already completed and be prepared for OPEN book/note exams (for this class at least). Not sure anything sticks in my head though.
If you expect to retain any knowledge about nutrition this is not the class to take. His book is nothing but copies from the internet and not one word of it it actually written by him. His lectures are disorganized and you spend the class flipping back and forth between pages. Discussion is not encouraged and what he says goes even when he is wrong
One of the best professors and more importantly an awesome individual. Follow his rules and you will do just fine in his class. Highly recommended.
VERYYYYYYYYYYYY STRICT but highly recommended.
He is the worse professor that I have had in my entire life. He is mean and very unfair.
Horrible professor, not only in CSULA, but whole US campus. Don't take my word for it, take he's class and find out your own, if you don't believe me.
he made my life miserable.
He can be sarcastic and teases people, but he doesn't mean any harm by it. If you don't pay attention though, you may feel like he's being rude when he's not. This is one of the easiest classes I've taken, you have one paper and 3 open book tests. He gives a lot of extra credit. I liked him.
Take the class w him. I know he is rude but who cares u want your good grade. Don't pay attention. GO To each class. He gives out a lot of xcredit. 2 midterm , final and one papre. Do the HW it will bust your grade one full letter:). So take him.
TERRIBLE professor. Do not take he's class unless you have to. It's unfortunate that he's the only professor teaches Ntri 351. He jumps around the lecture, he's very distratitve and he's mean!! Don't take he's class.!!!
He's a good professor only because every exam is open notes/notebook. He has a very dry sense of humor and sometimes can be a little much. pretty much easy class. you dont have to be amazing on tests...but still Do EVERY assignment and you can walk away with an A in the class. Lots of bonus points.
Comments are divided because he gives easy exams to students he like and hard exams for the student he hates. It depends which side of river you are on.. I don't recomment he's class, but unfortunately he's the only one teaches NTRI 351. Truly sad reality... Take he's class at your own risk.
He's very mean, and tell you where to sit if you are even one min. late. You cannot even use restroom during lecture. He think we live in Communist country... Strongly discourage to take he's class.. worse professor i even met.. truly pity..
Do NOT take he's class. You will suffer and regret. Take everyone's advice!!! i will repeat, DON'T TAKE HE'S CLASS!!!
I never hated a professor so much in my life like this professor. If you are curious, take he's class and find out. ^^ Really... don't take he's class. You will regret rest of your life.
EASIEST TEACHER EVER. He might seem mean at first, but he is actaully very easy. The hw is optional, but if you do it, then he accumalates additional points to your test grade. Gives bonus points just for attending class, you never know when. Be sure to be on time to turn in assignments or else he won't except it. two midterms, final open book/note
His class is easy. The problem is the students. They think that going to Uni is like being in high school. If you actually take the time to do the work, then the midterms and final becomes ridiculously easy. He's a military man, hence why he has that R Lee Ermey attitude when it comes to stragglers and whiners and people who feel entitled to an A.
ENERGETIC TEACHER, SIT CLOSE NEAR THE FRONT/PROF. IF YOU WANT TO GET AN A+ 1)DO HW 2) STUDY-STUDY GUIDE 3) WRITE RESEARCH PAPER AND DO WELL MOST IMPORTANT EXTRA CREDIT IS CRITICAL YOU MUST GO TO CLASS EVERYDAY AND DO HW FOR XTRA CRDIT! THEN YIPEE =)
This class is easy. This class was horrible though. I dont know how I made it through the quarter. Horrible proffessor. Plus he writes the book for the class which costs 100 dollars for printed peices of paper, then he makes u rip the assignments out of the book so you cant sell it back. He is a crook turning a profit off poor college students.
An easy A class. Do the optional HW and come to class everyday. All the HW and ex credit in class will boost you up a whole grade.
This class was very informative and entertaining. Orta likes to give people a hard time, which can put people off at first, but later they realize that he's joking. Read, listen, and you'll do fine.
He asked questions in class everyday. He used his roll sheet to call on everybody! And if u answered his questions wrong he'll make fun of u.He will make it look like is joking but really it could hurt someone's feelings. As far as the class just do your homework and you will pass the class even if you do bad on the tests.Come to class e.day do bonus
Attendance is MANDATORY! He makes you buy this huge book (thats basically 1000+ pages of xerox pages) but you will use it everyday & rip pages out. HW is optional but he will give bonus points to people who do all of it which he will add to your exam (very helpful)He usually teaches large class numbers so if u have a Q see him during his office hrs
Class is informative, he is a funny professor. Make sure you do all the HW and don't be absent or late and you will get an A.
funny professor but not that clear with his leactures. makes you buy a book he wrote and tear out pages. not the best but easy class if you attend EVERYDAY, if not FAIL! Ooh and he gives extra credit, lots of it.
If you are ONE minute late, he won't take your hw. If you are absent, you can & will lose points (lots is extra credit). The textbook is HUGE, must be written in, and can't be resold. He's hilarious & his class is easy. You get to use the book/notes/hw on ALL tests - final included. However, the class is pretty boring. Informational, but boring.
Don't take him. Biggest waste of time. Very biased. Gives extra credit when there is a little bit of people in the class. Tests are difficult, even though they are open book exams. Lectures are BORING and useless. He barely teaches, everything is in videos.
Do all the Hw and don't be late or absent. His test vary, so some people get easy test versions and others don't. Be ready to answer questions in class because he calls on everyone. Do all of the above and you will pass the class with an A. Remember DONT be absent or late and DO the Homework.
Wow. Where to begin? Unprofessional. Rude. Lacking knowledge. Has NO interest in student's well-being or in teaching them anything. It's clear he's just there to collect a paycheck and piss people off because he's unhappy with his life. Randomly makes up rules each week, randomly doesn't give people credit for homework based on mood.
I had a terrible experience in this nutrition course. This teacher is so rude and sarcastic and never could stay on topic. To put it in simple terms I can't stand him. He brought his lunch to class one day showing us what he eats, and basically contradicted everything he taught us about proper nutrition, full of hydrogenated oils, sugar and fats.
Just follow simple instructions, show up to ALL class meetings, do ALL homework (doesn't even check), do ALL bonuses, complete term project and do solid/fail on three exams and you'll still get an A or at least pass the class. Yeah he'll make you spend 100 bucks on a book he renews every term. He'll call on you to answer questions too. STAY AWAKE!
He will call on you to answer questions but they will be common sense questions and very easy. Come to all classes, don't text/sleep. Do all the homework. Open book tests are really difficult. But if you get all the bonus points, it could bring you up an entire grade
I was hesitant about taking his class based on the reviews, but it turned out to be very easy. There is just a lot of busy work (homework & term project). As long as you put effort into completing them you`ll do fine. There are bonuses (extra credit) available, but only if you stay awake and show up to class to answer the questions.
If you're not a nutrition major trust me when i say you're gonna be lost. I did'nt learn anything but somehow i got a B. His book is 100 dollars he wrote it himself and their is not table of context. the book is so thick and finding the answers in the book was a nightmare. I would no recommend him. I burned my book.
Attend every class session, this is where he hands out extra credit (bonuses). Complete every assignment and turn it in on time. He does have a study guide and open book (946pages) policy for his 3 exams but the study guide did not help and some questions were not possible to find in the book. He will help you at his office hours.
Worst professor at CSULA. Never take him. You will not learn anything and finally get an irrelevant grade.
Didn't like this class.
Don't take him.
You wont learn anything, and plus he gives random grades to everyone, and he makes us buy his book which is barely a book.
worst professor ever! He makes fun of students, unclear, forgetful and rude. He goes over things so fast, its hard to keep up. calls on EVERYONE. Make sure you don't use the restroom during class or else he will call you out. Also don't be late. Test is open books and notes but still hard. He has questions that are not even covered in class.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. Even the dean wants to fire him but they can't because he is tenured. Book is plagiarized and sold by him. He will make you do tons of work for "bonuses" then take them away if he decides he does not like you. I did not learn anything, the WHOLE CLASS is a SCAM to sell his poorly constructed book.
He's very unorganized. He does know his stuff general nutrition. I HATE THE BOOK, theres a lot of outdated material. He doesn't like going out of the scope of the class and doesn't like when you bring up new data. Tests are open book etc. the class is an easy A if you do all the work ( there is a lot) you'd have to be a tard to not get an A
If you would like to feel uncomfortable, hear sarcastic and rude comments, and want to feel your once non-violent self slowly morph into a quiet violent rage inside your heart, then I recommend this class. Please take the advise of those who have rated poorly. They will be your savior.
He has inconsistent lectures that jump from one topic to the next, moves students from desk to desk many times throughout the quarter, and is rude and sarcastic to his students. I did not feel comfortable being in this classroom.
He makes fun of students, unclear, forgetful and rude. He goes over things so fast, its hard to keep up. calls on EVERYONE. Make sure you don't use the restroom during class or else he will call you out.
Very upset at how irrelevant the exams are to class lecture.(hard eventhough openbk). Most info not even in book.Claims to give some info verbally, but doesnt.calls on every student every lecture to answer questions.Cannot go to restroom.Hw every wk, again answers not in book!, & cannot be late.Gives "bonuses",but can so easily be lost. Do not take!
Oh where to begin. This guy is extremely rude towards his students. He makes you buy a 100 dollar text book that you cannot re-sell since you be cutting out pages from turn in for every week's h.w. If you are a literally one minute late he would not collect your h.w and if you miss two days he would forfeit all your h.w points. Aviod him!
I don't know what's with all the negative reviews but Orta is one of my fave professors at CSULA. Very easy to pass his class. I missed class over 2x but my bonuses were still valid. Do your homework because even though he doesn't grade them, he'll use them to boost up test scores along with the bonuses.
This class is very interesting and he constantly makes jokes to keep your attention. You have hw every weekend and 3 exams along with a term project. He never grades the hw so just turn it in because at the end of the class he adds it as extra credit. Show up to every class and he adds about 30 points to your grade. Good teacher
I did not like this professor at all, he thinks we are all in kindergarten and likes to make fun of students. Be careful, he is very biased and he can pick on students whom he doesn't like. I really dislike this professor and regret taking him so much. If he doesn't like you good luck on the test and don't expect to get a good grade.
Yes he may be a bit rude &may pick on some students but honestly it's not a hard class. 3 open book exams. He gives a looot of bonus points for turning in "classwork". As long as youre always there & do hw. Homework is part of the extra points. Come to class everyday, don't text, don't sleep, don't use the restroom. BRING YOUR BOOK AT ALL TIMES.
I really didn't like this class. Try taking this with someone else. Skip him.
He was a terrible professor! He made you buy his book, which was badly organized. It's impossible to find what you're looking for. His lectures were useless. He tries to be funny but his "jokes" come off as rude and offensive.
He has a good sense of humor, as long as you think racial jokes and rude comments are funny. he is totally unclear about what is going on in the class. the whole grading system is based on these imaginary "bonus points" that he gives and takes away when he pleases, I'm not even sure how many points there are or what percent they are worth.
Very energetic + funny. Lots of extra credit. 1 paper. 2 midterms, 1 final. All open book. Except the book is 1,000 pages and it's not very organized, neither is he but attend the class ALWAYS, do every extra credit, go to his office hours, do good on the paper, get C's on the tests and you'll get an A. The class is stand up comedy! Hilarious.
Yes, he can say some bad jokes in which offend people, but you have to see where he comes from. He is a tough teacher who can and might pick on somebody for a whole day, but it is real funny if you do not get offended easily. Gives "BONUS" points for attending, but must come that day and the next meet. I liked this course.
No organized lecture whatsoever. He'll take you from chapter 1 to chapter 10 as he pleases. Memorize pg #'s from 900 pg book to do well. Does not lecture, rather goes around the room asking questions pertaining to the textbook. You never know what topic he's going to ask about next. He is very rude. His "humor" is extremely annoying.
don't take him
he will make you cry! R U N A W A Y ! or bring tissues. may the odds be ever in your favor.
I have learned a lot from Professor Orta in his class. His three exams are hard and that's why he allowed open book and notes and gave exam guidelines that are very helpful. Attend every class and do the extra creditsbonus points then you can get an A in his class. Also do your homeworks to earn extra credits. Textbook is required.
He absolutely does not teach. Classtime is spent going around the toom asking complicated questions and if you don't answer correctly, be prepared to be humiliated. The homework is difficult because the answers are not clearly stated in the textbook. You are not allowed to use the bathroom and if you do you are not allowed to return.
This is the worst class I have ever taken in my college career. Do not be fooled by his jokes. I am still currently in the class and regret every time I walk in there taking that class. He is rude. Does not teach just ask questions and expects you to know the answer. Take my advice and DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I'm currently in his class - now, he's not the sweetest prof, but he's a skilled, rad educator who makes sure his students learn their material. I admit I'm suffering with the workload, but I've had worse. Reading comments of my whiny classmates is a bummer, because if you go to his office for help he's generous and kind. Oversensitive kids.
he is HILARIOUS! you will love him if you are not overly sensitive. some people complain about him but you just have to DO EXACTLY AS HE ASKS. just learn to FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS and you will be fine. he will not accept homework if you walk in 1 min late. except hw to be due every Thursday. he also gives a lot of bonuses. exams are open book/notes.
I just took his class and this is an incredible innovative educator. He has awesome energy and probably one of the hardest working professors you will ever come across in. On the outside this is an extremely hard class and he's aware of that. To the serious college student you will appreciate this professor that's aware the importance of topic.
Lectures in this class wouldn't be so bad if we didn't spend the entire time flipping through the entire book - very annoying! Can't buy book used because he makes you rip out pages. Makes a huge deal of it if you need to leave the room. Makes inappropriate comments that you just have to ignore since nobody else teaches this class.
He is one of the worst professors that you could take at CSULA. He is, unfortunately, the only one who can teach this class so in all honesty you can't avoid him. If you can try and find another section in upper division themes to avoid him. He is very sarcastic and has you flipping through a huge unorganized book; the book can't be bought used.
There is no lecture and slide presentation. The professor takes roll the entire time and asks questions. The textbook is expensive ($95), has contradictory information, a lot of typos, and was made by the professor himself from some "cut and paste" information downloaded from the internet. The worst class of my life: DON'T TAKE IT!
Dr. Orta is really funny and entertaining. He is extremely knowledgeable. You have to go to class b/c he calls on people throughout the class to answer questions in order to get an attendance point for the day. Must buy the textbook new. Homework every week, but it is easy. He was really cool (very quick witted) and offered extra credit. Take him!
He is probably the worst teacher I've ever had. His teaching style is taking attendance and asking you random questions that are either from the book or not. He's impatient with waiting for student's questions and answers and comes off rude. His tests are open note and book but the questions were never discussed in class. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Horrendous Professor. Terrible lectures. Makes you buy a book that is made by him for 100 dollars and is completely wrong. Tests are based off his personal opinions. His textbook is complete trash, pages are all over the place, answers for homework will be in chapters far in the back not even to do with lecture. Is a ass during tests.
He is a very rude and unapproachable professor. His style of teaching is ridiculous. I do not know why he has not been fired yet.
Makes you buy a $100 dollar book . Whole class is based on questions he makes up himself . Doesnt check emails. Tests are open book but random questions. Only teacher in that field so cant avoid him. Material is interesting. He will pick on you in order to recieve participation points and thats his way of attendance.
The worst teacher/professor I've every experience. He absolutely do not know how to teach. I didn't learn anything from him. He easily gets off topic and discusses something that is totally irrelevant to the main topic. He will ask you questions and he expects you to know the answer even though those questions are off-topic and random. Tons of EC.
Tough but fair professor Extremely knowledgeable about subject Very good professor Would take all his courses
