Teaches you a lot about deep thinking. LOVE IT
I took him in a split session june class and we did a bizzillion take home tests that were extremely hard and were not taught about. BUT he is a wonderful thinker and he makes you look at things in a new perspective

Works out your brain. Reading, reading, reading but GREAT stuff. Hottest prof on campus.
He is indeed a very deep thinker and gets you to read and write about different aspects of educ. and he will accept writing assignments way past the two week deadline as long as its good. But to get an A you have to attend class.I made A's on everything but got a C in the class b/c I missed 9 days.
Awful teacher, unwilling to help.
Dr. O is unique and slightly boring. He is very scattered. He encourages you to "think about your thinking," but I frequently found myself thinking about his thinking. This could be seen as positive and negative--I'm not sure which, I'm still thinking.
Major hurdle to pass for future teachers- You may never encounter an education class so abstract. He is a bit scattered and sometimes that poses challenges in his essay assignments. Critical thinking and attendance are requirements for an A. You will breath a sigh of relief once you pass.
Very scattered-brained. Repeats too much from previous class. Doesn't believe in tests for this class, but rather papers. Nothing related to education - mostly thinking, philosply. Wish he would teach on issues we need to be concerned about with teaching: discipline, state regulations, etc.
If you have a record for PERFECT attendance and enjoy staying in class the entire time, then this is the class for you. He means well, but his thoughts are so out there that you can easily get confused. Take home tests and LOOOOONNNNGGG projects.(be thorough with EVERY project-never do the minimum.)
He comes off as odd and if u don't drop the class in the fst 2 weeks u will prob live thru it. It gets much better later on (no joke). You must attend! He is helpful and will assist as much as possible which is great. Do all the work and there is no reason not to do well unless you cut corners.
Dr O'sullivan is by far the most INTERESTING person i have ever met. I love his stories about indigenous tribes. He likes to cuss in class, and i have caught him doing stretching exercises on the floor during test. He likes papers with a lot of "depth and breadth" to them. "ummmmm hmmmm yeah" He is totally a nut, but i loved him!
"ummmmm hmmmm yeah" and an early morning class don't go over too well. Very scatter-brained & gave out a lot of information that clashed with what I took in political science & business law. I don't care for this teacher at all. something to be said for someone who goes "ummmmm hmmmm yeah" all the time & makes us bring snacks...
Not very helpful or clear on what he wants your papers to be about. This was the weirdest class because I thought I signed up for an education class, but instead, I sat through a philosophy class!
umm yea ok. uh huh

Dr. O'Sullivan attempts to bring one to a greater place in thought provoking evocation of knowledge. He expects one to take it upon his/herself to study and come to a place of understanding when writing papers. His essays are set up so that one must truly explain and understand the subject matter in order to pass. Not easy, but a great man.
Take it from me, you will come to appreciate him if you transfer to another college. - Even though Dr. O has his quirks, he makes most other education professors look completely incompetent. Appreciate his knowledge and learn all you can from him, because you will probably never have anyone smarter. Signed- a former student.
One of the worst professors of my lifetime. I would literally stick a hot needle in my eye rather than take another class with him. Also he os a bit creepy with his stares and smiles. HORRIBLE....

He is very intelligent and knows his information. However, when it comes to his assignments, they are very lengthy. I am enjoying the observation part of the class. He is very monotonous and has really never sparked my interest in the material b/c all he does is ask questions upon more questions that NO ONE will answer. Good luck if you take him
I need the class for my major, but I couldnt have picked a worst teacher. He is very unclear and repeats himself many time. I swear he is on something casue he always so spaced out. He does have a passion for what his teaching just doesnt know how to relay the info. Also, expect to hear Um, and Uh Huh Alot!
I hated this class soooo much! He is not clear in his directions for papers. We only had 3 grades and all were papers. Do not take him if you don't have too!
I learned a lot from the assigned reading. Be prepared for 10 weeks of lecture and observation and then 3 papers thrown at you in the last 6 weeks. Get your observation paper done in the first 10 weeks because the last 3 papers are scary. He's a nice guy; liked the class discussion but could've done without having to attend the class... I didn't
If their was another teacher to teach this course I would have taken it. He is the only one!! He is awful. For the the first 10 weeks of class you do absolutley nothing. Then the last 6 weeks of the class you are slammed with 3 papers. He is a tough grader, I recommend going to the writting lab each time you write b/c that is how u pass.
Toughest "B" I ever made. Two grades for the whole class, and they were these huge, involved essays. I made a "C" on the first one, and an "A" on the last one. He asks some pretty tough questions for us to ponder, as future teachers. As stated, he does come across as, um, existing on a different plane, but I just thought it was kinda funny.
At first, the class is very slow moving. We did not receive a grade at all before the midterm period. The class is comprehensive so the papers that you write are done at the very end of the semester. I learned a tremendous amount of information this way and feel that it was an effective class. Dr. O'Sullivan is a very nice man too.
OMG do not take this instructor!
he sucks and needs to uhhh YEAH quit teaching uhhh uh huh
I LOVED O'SULLIVAN! I DID GET A B IN THE CLASS, AND THE LAST MONTH WAS VERY STRESSFUL. THOUGH, ISN'T THIS WAHT COLLEGE IS ABOUT? I HAVE SIGNED UP FOR A DIFFERENT CLASS THAT HE WILL BE TEACHING.
I was very pleased with Dr. O'Sullivan's class. He is an extremely intelligent man and his assignments make you really think. If you want to be a good teacher then take his class.
I found him to be a very thought provoking and interesting professor. He made me broaden my outlook on teaching and learning as well. He comes across a little bit of a bohemian kind of teacher with very few deadlines and regulations. But May I suggest not wait to do the last three papers till the end, bad Idea but over all great teacher.
He sucked. He only passed you with a high grade if you agreeded with his view points. His class had nothing to do with education, it had to do with his twisted views and opinions
He was interesting and really probed your brain. This class was more opinion based on our reading, so that made class very interesting!!!
He was terrible. His class had nothing to do with education. He says "yeah uh huh" 100 times a class period!
Overall I liked the class. It wasn't the best class ever or the easiest. However, if you are taking this class you have most likely decided that education is for you. He dosen't tell you what to write but rather he stimulates you to think for yourself. The opinions I had differed from my classmate and we both did well. He wants true thought.
Weird weird guy i paid attention though and made a good grade in the class, but it took really applying myself to the material!!
BORING CLASS AND NOT USEFUL AT ALL. I MADE "A"'S IN ALL MY PAPERS AND HE GAVE ME A "B". HE SAID THAT MY PARTICIPATION IN CLASS WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH, SO IN HIS OPINION I DID NOT DESERVE AN "A".
totally awesome... he has a lot to offer anyone willing to learn, i had him for a variety of classes and i found all of them relevant to academia and life...
If you like to be challenged in your thinking, he is excellent. If you are lazy and like things spoon fed, find another professor. He is better than good. He is pretty serious, but he is a lot of fun too.
It's funny reading all the comments here. It's true this guy says "um-hum" a lot, but only when students are talking and he is encouraging them to talk further. O'Sullivan is the best, smartest, most interesting and supportive teacher I've ever had. He is totally cool and he makes you want to be smart and know what is going on in the world.
If you are interested in the environment you may enjoy this class otherwise you will find it a waste of time. Journal every day, projects each with a presentation and a 8 page paper, and a field service requirement where you have to go out and help a environmental group for a min of 8 hours all seemed like a big waste of time for a non-majors.
I enjoyed this course. Like most courses Attendance is enforced. If you go to class and participate in discussions, you will do good. I would recommend this professor.
He makes learning interesting.
This class had nothing to do with education at all. It's just random assignments on random things. Assignments tend to be rather lengthy and due in short time. The class has no structure at all. Ambiguity runs rampant.
This class is very interesting; you learn a lot about the environment. The teacher is a little...quirky? Haha. The class does require a bit of work-writing journals and lots of reading and reflecting. I managed an A pretty easily, however. Just keep up with the work.
his class is interesting and fun. but be prepared to give up your social life due to all the papers you have to write!!
Awful teacher and he should be avoided at all costs. The class is very unorganized. Do not take this teacher for 2110!
This is absolutely the worst education class I have ever taken! He gives you no work in the first 8 or so weeks but then you get slammed with 3 papers back to back! If he was the only one teaching a class I needed I would change my major!!
This guy teachers 10 different classes and they are all totally different. Some are a lot of work and others are not. I've had him for 3 classes and he is fun, sharp and makes you think about things in new ways.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Discusion class that ends up swallowing you whole. If you dont have any other classes, you might do good but if you have any other life demands then get out while you can.
This class had nothing to do with education at all. The first half of the semester is spent doing nothing and then he throws 4 papers at you in the last 5 weeks of class. You'll never know what your grades are on papers, he just hands them back un-marked. Oh yeah, did I mention he was a total jerk too?
Best class I've had. He totally improves your thinking and teaches you how to write. Lot's of humor. Educated in three Countries. Totally interesting and traveled.
If you can't tell by all of the other posts, Professor O'Sullivan really is a character. It's hard to take him seriously sometimes because it seems like he's always in his own little world, but he has great stories and is a well-learned guy. This is a VERY easy class.
A great deal of reading and writing, but at this level, one should expect it. Excellent teacher who likes to get your brain thinking outside the box. If you want to be sppon fed your education, don't take this class. If you want to think about what's going on in your world around you, this is an excellent class. Great TEACHER...
O'Sullivan is one of the MOST interesting teachers I have ever had. He has got to be one of the most educated and socially rounded professors at GSC. His class is not the easiest, but it is so exciting. Dr. O'Sullivan is full of knowledge that you would never read in a text book. His life experiences are more helpful than anything that is in the
O'Sullivan will not do you death by powerpoint. He knows how to teach and does it all like an honors class. He give tons of reading, makes everyone discuss the readings, sets up debates, and then he talks about 3 or 4 of the usual ways to look at it and the pros and cons of each, and "maybe" he will tell you what he himself thinks. He's GREAT!
He is a great teacher! You do a lot of reading and writing in this class but it is the only education class I have learned anything in. It was hard work but I learned a lot. Foundations is the philosophy of education to all of the people who are saying it was not about educ. Idk what class they were in bc his is all about educ
If you love to read about your environment all day everyday this a great class for you. Had a hard time understanding him. Gives about 40 pages of reading on the weekend and then a paper due in like two days about it Does not have a good grading system you never know your grade if you email him. Tells you to come by his office but he is never there
If you want to be a great teacher take Dr. O'Sullivan! What a intelligent and all around great guy! There is a lot of reading but if you do the work you will get a good grade. Took him in June mester(along with SPAN2001) made As in both classes.O'Sullivan creates a very zen atmosphere and he is FULL of knowledge you not find anywhere else!
I enjoyed his class. He is a teacher who is very passionate about what he is teaching and you will learn a lot from his class. There is a lot of reading and assignments but it is all worth it. What I love most of all is the discussions on the readings. Every future educator should take his class. Very interesting and knowledgeable man. Nice man!
He is awful. You never know where you stand. He requires massive amounts of reading and writing papers.
I love learning about education... but in this class you will not learn a lot about it. There are lots of papers (must read all). There are 4 papers to write around 10-20 pages each. He told me he only allows 1/3 of the class to get an A. He doesnt respond to emails very often either. It is good to speak up in class as well.
This professor is by far the most worldly man I have ever met. A relaxed atmosphere in the classroom. Lots of critical thinking and discussions. This course has stayed with me. Everyone should take it.
Better than good.
He is very worldy and easy to approach. Encourages critical thinking and personal motivation. Alot of reading, writing and discussions. Not the easiest prof but if you want to learn, he's worth the work.
Had O'Sullivan for several classes. He is a wonderful, thought provoking, and insightful professor. He makes you learn for yourself.
Not a very good teacher. He's very wordy and talks, and talks, and talks, and talks and does some more talking. He doesn't manage time well and class is usually held over. LOTS of reading and writing!! LOTS!!!! He says umm and uh-huh a lot and flaps his arms like a dying penguin all the time. Wouldn't recommend him. He's a little snappy too.
I have no idea where people got the idea he was a good professor..NEVER take him. He's horrible! I can't say one sentence, or half a sentence really, without saying um or uh. He doesn't care about his students all he wants is a paycheck.
No, he's not the typical instructor who dumbs down his classes for you to keep up your GPA. His brain may not click the same way yours does... he's an introverted genius - and if you just open up and go with the flow, accepting who he is, and that he actually is there for YOU - you will learn a thing or two - about yourself... he's a good egg.
The best teacher at GSC. a great Multidisciplinary look at Environmental problems and there causes. Insightful and knowladgeable a definitively interesting dude
Dr. O is not an easy teacher. If you really want to learn something take him. If you want an easy "A" don't. He is kind, fair, and extremely interesting. He has lived his life and travelled a lot and very intelligent.
GO TO CLASS I didn't turn in 2 papers and got an A. I had a friend that turned in all her papers and got a B because she missed 8 classes. You do have to write but it's easy stuff. I recommend him.
Great professor. Lots of good discussions. There are some LONG papers but you can still do well.
Great teacher who is very helpful and willing to listen or talk about anything. GREAT Guy!
He's a great teacher. He loves when you communicate with him in class and interact with him. Always go to class!
The guy is nice, but gives out a lot of reading and writing assignments. Do not expect a class where you can get an A without effort. In the beginning he really encouraged discussion but oddly at the end he started focusing more on lecture, kind of not cool because discussion is more interesting. The guy knows a lot and is very open -minded.
Funny professor. cool guy, loves when class participates, and is quite a person with alot of knowledge. Go to class every day and youll be fine.
Be prepared to do 30 hours of volunteer work for a research project that will be your final. Lots of tests but they are take homeopen book, class will always go over. He is very intelligent, has really traveled the world and knows a lot about it. don't ever skip!!! be prepared to read a lot, speak up in class. He grades really tough!!!
O'Sullivan teaches the most pointless class I have ever taken. Prepare to only read books written by socialist authors, books on climate change and evolution. If you make an argument against any of his progressively liberal viewpoints he takes it personally. This semester we have written 4 papers, 3 out of 4 were 10 pages or more. WASTE OF TIME!!!!
Dr. O'Sullivan is an amazing person in general. Interesting lectures but fought to stay awake due to length. Main grade is a Service Learning Project: 30hrs + Term paper over it. Assigns take home testsreally tough (8-12) papers randomly. Does not use D2L. Absences: 3- A, 4- B, 5- C. Great man but would not take again due to lack of organization.
Dr. O'Sullivan is awesome! He's the most interesting and intelligent professor I've had at UNG. Class lectures are filled with great conversations about current social problems. O'Sullivan is worldly and promotes critical thinking. He cares about his students. Easy take home tests. Two long papers. 30 hours volunteer work. I strongly recommend him!
Do the midterm and final papers and do them well! Requires considerable extra time outside of class
I was excited for a class in Environmental Studies, my favorite subject. I have been highly disappointed. His lectures are elementary that discuss things well known to most in the class while papers and reading assignments are very difficult. He grades them very harshly with no feedback. Do not take this class if you have any independent thought.
GREAT TEACHER. He is super nice and will work with you with ANYTHING. Will take him again!!
One of the best professor's I've ever had. Likes discussion and participation. It's a very eye-opening class and he has some very eye-opening opinions. One reason I chose one of my classes next semester was so I could have him as a professor again. 10/10 recommend.
Expect to read. Lecture does not match the amount of work you have to do. His reading are long but varied, and mostly easy. He only assigned 2 take home tests and 1 essay most of the semester. I was blind sighted on the last month in which he assigned 3 new essays due on/before/for the final. Funny guy, but simple lecture with long in-depth reading
His class will make you fall asleep. The lectures are extremely long and completely off topic. Midterm is 8-12 pages. Take home tests are easy. Final is somewhat easy. I don't recommend him.
Never. Ever. Ever. Again. Highly dreaded his classes. Wanted to drop. He wanted everyone to talk in class, and I have serious social anxiety. He made me feel very uncomfortable. I did talk to him about it, and it helped a little, but it still stressed me out so much. Will never take him again.
Overall his class was decent. He is kind of awkward, but some of his lectures are fun. Only had a couple decent length papers(about 10 pages each and one power point) and take home tests, but it wasn't impossible. Just show up and you'll do fine!
O'Sullivan is obviously very passionate about the humanities. However, the assignments were unclear and most of the class got two separate papers mixed up somehow. He's a very interesting individual and I enjoyed his lectures.
For the first week, we were assigned 2 take home quizzes, a group project, a 5 page paper, a two page paper, and a 3 page paper all due on monday. For the quizzes you had to read very confusing material that were both 50 pages front and back. Doesn't work with you, and if you're 5 minutes late he growls at you.
First off, I took this class as a Maymester class and Maymester classes are usually intense. But, for this class it was A LOT of reading, Take Home Exams (2), and many papers to write. Dr. O'Sullivan is very nice, but the lectures do not match the amount of work that is needed to do outside of class. For this class, you need to be a strong writer!
I had done 3 papers and a presentation and that was considered participation. Our last test and (16 page) research paper counted as most of my grade. He pushes for attendence and expects it to be your priority no matter what. Great character and lectures but needs to be clearer and more understanding.
Nice guy. Great teach. Enthusiastic ad engaging. AWESOME!
John O'Sullivan is an amazing professor and an even better mentor and man. Get ready to be inspired and have your whole worldview shifted in such a good way. He is not everyone's cup of tea, but that is no fault of his own. A lot of people in this world are just not ready for him yet. If you let him he WILL be the BEST teacher you have ever had!
He is a character, he's passionate about what he does. He's not very forgiving w/ attendance because its around 20% of your grade. If you put passion into your work and effort he appreciates it and theres not many assignments. It's not a difficult class but if you speak up he'll take that into account for grading. Super great, and quirky, loved it.
For the first 2 months of the semester he would lecture on irrelevant topics. After the midterm, he assigned a lot of take home quizes and a huge project & paper. This class stressed me out towards the end of the semester because of the sudden heavy work load. I "uh huh yeah" hated this class and he was overall just awkward and often unclear.
Show up to class & write your papers... You will get an A. He is really passionate about the environment, which makes me interested in his lectures. He even took my class out on a field trip to a boat ride to the Buford Dam, and had 2 different people from evironmental organizations to come speak. Just write good essays, your grade depends on 4.
He is a pretty good teacher, links the info that he teachers to his own personal events. He is funny & tall. But his final is terrible, the minimal paper was 15 pgs not including the work cited and he only gave us the questions three weeks before final the only problem was he had us doing a large group project with a 4 pg paper at the same time
He loves to ramble on about stories and trips he has been on. Very good person and kinda awkward until you get to know him. Be ready to write many lengthy papers! The final was a minimum of 15
His lectures are not relevant to our homework or anything we're graded on. He seems like a good guy but his class is so hard to get through because he rambles and spends maybe 5 minutes a class going over information that will be graded. On multiple occasions he's waited until one minute before class ends to go over homework.
Overall was a pretty decent class. Only had one paper and one quiz graded before May which I thought was odd. During the month of May, wrote almost 55 pages for papers and the cumulative take-home final which was really rough. He's a cool, knowledgeable guy but if you don't show up to class and don't speak in discussions, you will not pass.
1 HUGE take home final w/ an in class cumulative test. 1 research paper w/ presentation. 1 Essay. 1 take home quiz. LOTS OF READING!! Do the stuff and you will pass. Participate as much as possible. Every lecture will either be group discussions or HEAVY lectures. READ EVERYTHING. O'Sullivan is not there to mail it in. He's passionate about Change
I would not recommend taking classes with this professor!
Very tough grader and a very difficult professor to deal with . Just stay away from him .
DO NOT take this class. Unless you are a very strong writer. The final exam is take home and is around 10 pages long. You will hate your life.
If you want to enjoy taking a class and learning from it do NOT take this professor!! If you actually want a chance at passing a class do NOT take this professor!! Be prepared to read and write constantly. Record lectures if possible. JUST DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR if you are expecting any kind of help!!! SERIOUSLY, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!
Dr. O is a character. You either love him or you don't. I really enjoyed him. He's a bit whimsical in the way he speaks, it's intriguing. Just read the material and be prepared to talk about it in the next class. He wants everyone to participate. I enjoyed talking to him outside of class on current events. Don't discredit him, he is very smart
We didn't have any tests. He does take-home quizzes on scantrons, which makes it easy. He also makes you read a lot and write papers. The final is a presentation about a project. You have to volunteer in a social facility for a certain amount of hours .. so take only if you have extra time after school!
I loved Professor O'Sullivan! It is evident he is really passionate about the things he teaches. He has lots of stories and experiences that relate to the class. The work load is very moderate and you have the whole semester to write the final essay. It is important to read the material and be prepared to discuss in class.
Dr. O'Sullivan is an exceptional professor in the way that he knows what he is talking about and he really shows passion for what he teaches. Lectures are interesting, but you have to be ready to discuss readings. Your grade depends on papers and attendance, so be ready for that commitment! Solid person, tough professor.
Seems like a good guy but not a good professor. He rambled all the time and was very inconsiderate of other classes. He kept us over time almost every class period and once made me 15 mins late to my next class by making the class go on a walk outsidefor no reason. In a class of eight people, he never learned my name.
Best professor at UNG. You will learn a lot in any of his classes.
O'Sullivan is a scatter brained for a professor. We had so much given to us after he told us we'd only have 3 big essays. He would give deadlines and I would work hard to get done on the deadlines, but then when someone wasn't finished he extended. He also gave us a required presentation that some didn't have to do. Lots of weekend work!
This class is mainly lecture based, but it is extremely interesting. In this class, we write 5 major essays, therefore it's a lot of writing, but as long as you stay up to date and work along the way, it is an easy A. Give your best effort and you will thoroughly enjoy this class. O' Sullivan is funny and tells many stories to help us understand.
Great class! Enjoyed attending the lectures, very informational topics, very thought-provoking.
Didn't really know what to expect when writing papers for this class, it's better to go above and beyond for the papers.
If you are someone who is passionate about the environment, language, sociology, or psychology I would advise taking this course. Attendance matters & there are thorough papers to write. He does care however, about what you have to say and wants to know how the material he gives resonates with you.
Attending is important, very little grades; max of 5 grades. A lot of writing and reading, a very heavy grader. However, isn't good at feedback. My first essay was cover with "?" and barely any full feedback. Mid term was hard, you have to remember all of the video and articles you read from august to whenever mid term is.
Final grade is determined by 4 essays, midterm, and participation. Essay guidelines are vague; treat them all like English finals. Midterm content is exactly what you use for optional discussion posts. Do not skip discussions just because they do not get put in as grades. The lectures are interesting and the workload is minimal just stay caught up.
He is extremely rude and he will literally call you out for mistakes and use you as an example. I don't like him as a person at all. He talks way too much and keeps us after class.
He is not a good professor. He underestimates the abilities of others and is overall an odd individual. I would advise you to not take him because I surely wish I never did. I desperately hope admin takes notice into his behavior.
O'Sullivan is without a doubt one of the most interesting individuals I've ever met in my life. While he is a smart and knowledgeable person, it'll take you weeks to get used to his personality. He's like a ball of energy going from one point to another with a level of fervent excitement I didn't know was possible. Awesome professor 10/10
I have never met such a wonderful man, ignore the comments they just do not get his whimsy. He is a VERY understanding professor and takes the time to talk to his students. He has one of the most delightful personalities. TAKE HIS CLASS, I promise you if you consider yourself any form of an intelligent you will enjoy his class.
He is an extremely tough/reasonable grader. Everyday a random lecture about events happening, don't take notes because he doesn't quiz you on any of it. Pay attention because you might use it in your final essay. There were 3 papers he graded and then participation that's it. Go to the writing lab and speakers for participation. Get it done early.
