Class for the most part is easy with take home tests and a final big project. However answers need to come directly from the book or from notes and must be word for word. This tends to be confusing to say the least.
His accent is very difficult to understand(hes from Kenya)Your grade is only based on a take home midterm and a take home final. However, even if your answers are correct he may still mark you wrong because he doesnt like how you answer them.terrible prof.
He's a nice guy and everything, but wouldn't take him again. He does grade you only on how you word your answers, not whether it's correct or not. It's hard to know how your doing on tests and in class because of this.
You can copy your answers from the book and still get points off just because he did not like the way you worded your answer. It's impossible to get a clear answer from him. For an introduction course...it's awful and confusing.
two words...LANGUAGE BARRIER.
All I gotta say is... he sucks SO much... if you find out you have him for a class, get out of it ASAP. It's better to take the class later with someone else than stick around with him. WHY ISNT HE FIRED YET???
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!!!! Worst class EVER- don't take him
not good
dr. otieno is areally nice guy and will help you any way he can. a good sense of humor
Professor Otieno has has a sound knowledge in this field appears to get very excited by teaching. His exams can be tough but he is open to giving the students assistance when they ask for it. I have learned a lot in this course and wouldn't hesitate to take another one instructed by him.
He means well, his language barrier is difficult to get over. All his tests are take home (although he said this was the last semester he was doing that (Fall 2004)). If you go back and talk to him in his office he will change your grade. I would avoid taking him,it was so difficult to adjust to him
very helpful. would make a great date
Teacher was very strange. He was a tough grader as well.

"Sociology isss...issss the study of human behavior" thats the only thing we learned that whole entire semester..boo!
Not very helpful at all, or understanding.
Wow this teacher sucks! You cannot understand a word he says, and all he complains about is how this generation wastes their time on the simpsons...this class is a complete waste of time. Plus he cannot talk or spell at all!!
He's a funny guy.
He isnt a bad teacher, he is relatively really easy. It is hard to understand him w/the accent but he is an easy grader, and the class is worth the grade. He seems to go on rants at times but overall if ur pretty lazy and want a freebie class take this.
I took his course last summer. Very hard to understand. No matter how hard we tried our answers were wrong. Couldn't spell well. Gave me a hard time for being a high school student.
Definite language barrier. His english skills are not what they should be. What should have been an easy grade, became exhausting...work load is relatively light. open book exams were so specific you couldnt find them.
can't understand him at all...one day i came in ready for a quiz but it was on something i had never even heard in class or read...he was no help and doesn't seem to care
Otieno was great... because of the language barrier he wrote down every single word he spoke in class on the board. He is very funny and unbiased. You will learn a lot from him. Open book tests were easy.... most important things... read whats required, ask questions, and do not skip class... especially fridays
I had him for african civ in the new world. He's a nice and funny guy and everything, but a tough grader. I missed one class all semester, read was I was suppose to, did the tests and papers, asked questions on things I was confused about and still got a D-. All because he totally grades you based on how you word your answers, even if it makes sense to everybody else, which is really not fair.
i love this guy.

hahaha. this man; this man is truly a gem. however, you either love him or you hate him.
Although he can be hard to understand at times, he knows what he is talking about. His expectations are high, but he is ALWAYS willing to help you out. If you talk to him and make an effort you will be fine. I definitley recommend him to anyone...sometimes as students we need to make a little effort too!
if you take good notes and do the reading you should get and A in this class
if you make an effort, easy class
had him for sociology & african american studies. worst professor i've ever had. do not take a class with him. i got a D and went to talk to him about it..he made a mistake..it was suppose to be an A. he makes no sense at all about anything he says. did not learn one thing about sociology or african american studies the entire semester.
Professor Otieno means well but he can't teach. Very difficult class. Tests seem easy but he grades them heavily and concentrates on answering questions completely. I attended every class and still found tests hard. NOTES have to be taken in every class if you want to pass the tests. I managed a B for the course. I strongly suggest another teacher.
Otieno is the most imcompetent professor I've ever had. He gave us the wrong pages to review (he gave us the pages for soc 201) and gave me the test for soc 201 as well, and since it was due on the day of the final I have no way of making it up. What an idiot. His soc class isn't a soc class, it's a politcal science class. Choose a better prof.
He's an okay guy, but NOT a good professor. He's from Africa, so he's VERY hard to understand. But he does want you to suceed and pass. But in the end, pick another professor and save yourself.
Class is pretty much a joke, easy A.
I am not surprised that I am disappointed about the comments left about Dr.Otieno :( People in my class would complain about his methods and his accent but I loved both. I regret that I didn't pass in a lot of work in his class but one of the most important things to him is following the structure that he asks you to, and what is wrong with that?
...so as long as you do what he asks for- set papers up properly it should be a pleasure to have him. And yes he has a beautiful thick African accent but just pay attention and listen and you should be fine, I understood him as well as any other professor. I find him to be so beautiful.
Worst teacher! Class was horrible!! Can't read his hand writing. can't understand a word he says! Didn't learn a thing in that class. And his grading system does not make sense!
accent difficult to understand sometimes but a wonderful, intelligent professor nonetheless.
ohhhh my goodness. otieno was the hardest professor ive ever had. this was because of his heavy heavy accent. i tried so hard not to fall asleep in his class. He'll kick you out if you do so I just cover my eyes with my bangs.. He's a cool person. make sure you take notes, and study the textbook, LITERALLY every single line. Good luck.
He doesn't know what he's talking about. He gave us bad information and quoted statistics that he just misunderstood. When students tried to explain something to him, he always disagreed. I did well in the class (everyone did) but learned absolutely nothing and struggled with my frustration level the entire time.
Bad, bad, bad, probably one of the worst college courses I have ever taken. He hardly talks about sociology its all about sex. granted that is a subject of soc but it should not be the entire course. He is very hard to understand, and it is very hard to get a decent grade on any of his home works.
Study the textbook and notes. He writes a lot of notes. DO NOT FALL ASLEEP in this class or he will kick you out. He can be a bit unusual, but he really helps you understand the sociological perspective. He sometimes is difficult to understand. His instructions for one assignment were very ambiguous, and more than 70% of the class did poorly on it.
You can not understand a word he says because he has a thick African accent. You can barely read a thing he writes on the board b/c it looks like chicken scratch. He hated my groups presentation because it was Pro Gay Marriage. He is AGAINST anything gay, basically is how he put it when he gave us feed back. The topic is great but he taught poorly
This guy makes no sense half the time. He will write stuff on the board and almost forget what he is talking about. Very unclear about homework assignments, and his take home quizzes barely make any sense. Notes are taken but they cannot be used on take home quizzes. Text is also extremely drab
Hate this class. His notes make no sense and have nothing to do with sociology whatsoever. He's not organized at all and his take home quizzes are impossible cause he doesn't tell you what chapters to read. His tests are written out the way he talks, in broken english. He's also so very opinionated that you're wrong no matter what.
I used to love sociology and the idea of learning more about it. This professor has sucked the life out of it. His grading system is AWFUL and his ignorance and disregard for helping students is extremely apparent. I wouldn't recommend his class to anyone. If you'd like your $1000+ dollars worth for this course, I wouldn't take him.
very good prof. keeps things simple and if a poor grade is given on an exam he gives you a take home to boost up grade. he only gives mid term and final and 2 take home quizzes, this is extra points on your total grade and can add up to 20 plus points at the end.
Horrible professor. Speaks about useless topics that have nothing to do with the class. Very unclear about assignments and topics that he covers.
Worst class I have ever taken. Does not speak clearly in English. Tests and quizzes are confusing- class lectures are unorganized and not worth attending. He rakes attendance but it does not count.
I'm very surprised to see such awful comments posted on here. I can honestly say that Professor Otieno was the best professor I have ever had at Salem State. I learned so much from him it's ridiculous. His philosophical views on life are fascinating as well as his life experiences which he will often tell you about in class. I learned alot from him
Lots of notes. No idea what he talks about. Lucky I got a B in his class because of extra credit.
I found the class very interesting, he kept out attention. I'lll agree assignments are not completely clear but they are easy, make sure you are reading, gives you extra assignments to make up a poor grade. i love his stories-it's crazy how different cultures can be & he shares his experiences. Show up, take notes, read and complete work.
Otieno is very enthusiastic about what he teaches which can keep you interested. The class is basically a lecture with note taking and there is minimal amount of homework and 2 take home quizzes. I found myself interested in the topics he taught that concern us all as individuals and a group.
I dont understand why people would rate him so bad. I took him in the summer. He loves what he teachers and as long as you know your facts and use knowledge from what you've learned from other classes or whats going on in the world he will love you. Just take notes and read the chapters . Yeah he has an accent but who doesn't? Not a big deal.
Very confusing. Thick African accent. His notes on the board are very messy even he gets lost in them. Try to avoid this professor.
He's a good & sometimes funny person, but when it comes to teaching he wasn't good at it. Expected a lot, but taught very little & a lot of times didn't make sense. If you end up having him, don't stress out just do everything he says and you'll get an A! Take good notes (even thought at times it's hard to read his notes) & definitely read!
He's a good & sometimes funny man but when it comes to teaching he's not really good at it. He's notes are very messy & sometimes don't make sense. Read the book. Don't stress out just do everything he says to do & you'll get an A. Strong accent. Take good notes even though it might be hard to read his. Try & do your best! And good luck!!
Not the greatest professor you want to take. If you want to learn DON'T take him. He's funny at times but very hard to understand and you become overwhelmed because you never know your grade and you feel like your failing. Bur in the end if you do all of your work that he gives you throughout the year you'll be fine
He knows what he is talking about but does not explain well. he does not go over anything that is in the book yet half the stuff on the midterm and final is tested on the reading. there's no way of getting in touch with him because he doesn't use his email. but the quizzes are easy because they are take home.
The man is very smart, but teaching is not his strong point. A thick accent and messy handwriting makes it hard to understand what he is teaching. You basically focus on the same topic all semester. Midterm/final are written in broken English. He is funny, charismatic, and loved talking about his "sweetheart" which was cute, though.
Please for your own sanity don't take classes with this Prof. I am an A/B student & was excited to take this course. Doesn't follow the syllabus, rather rants about the current black struggle and the government.Just got our midterms back & the whole class proved his "corrections" wrong. Midterm=50% Final=50%. Students should not be correcting profs.
Worst class I have ever taken at SSU! I you can avoid this professor DO IT! You will not be able to understand a thing that he says! He is impossible to get in touch with; he doesn't respond to emails and is never in his office. His lectures are completely opinion based, but the exams are solely based on the text. He takes attendance.
Hardly understand a word out of the mans mouth.
A tough grader. Hard to understand notes. His english isn't the best, so the answers to quizzes are often quotes from the book. Funny in class, takes what he teaches very seriously. He understands the subjects very well, but doesn't explain them well. Only problem is teaching isn't his calling. Avoid this class.
Just gives you his opinion and says the same thing every class. You need to read the book or you will have no idea what topic you are learning about. The only class I've ever had where I was angry about what the teacher is saying every class....
Worst professor in this school. The language barrier is one thing but he is also slightly inappropriate. I passed his midterm, exam and the group project (which was done by myself, no help from my other classmates), attended all classes and I squeaked by with a C+. I was too shocked and angry to fight him on it. Stay away from his classes!!!
if you are interested in learning a thing about sociology, do not take his class. i have learned absolutely nothing. all the reviews for him on here are 100% accurate. he is a nice guy, but i wouldn't recommend the class, especially to soc. majorsminors.
Otieno is from Kenya so his english and grammar is a little off. He's a good guy but very opinionated-doesn't teach Soc, he teaches his opinions on our generation and racism. Sometimes says offensive things. Everything is take home but he expects answers a certain way that doesn't make sense. Try to avoid him.
This is a common complaint, but the fact that his English isn't great is really tough to work through. Make sure you pay attention and take very close notes;he expects you to answer exam questions with perfect quotes from the notes. Trust me; keep your head down, pay attention, and you'll never have to deal with him again!
He's a tough grader-I'll give you that. But I feel he gives great feedback if you stay after class. No homework, take home tests and not many quizzes/tests in the first place. SHOW UP&PAY ATTENTION. His lectures are long but I find them great. Participation is also important but his class is very easy, I never bought the book but I got an A+.
Honestly, it's not his accent that will throw you off, but it is definitely the conversations that he has in his class. Even though you have no homework in his class, you definitely need to do good on quizzes and tests. He's a really tough grader. HE IS NOT AFRAID TO CALL YOU OUT...., (BTW: I learned nothing about sociology in his class.) Good Luck
Otieno is a fantastic Sociology teacher, he really understands the material and makes sure his students do too. Take good notes, it is very important for take home exams. His accent is not that hard to understand at all. Very lively teacher, never skipped a class, I was so interested. Never used my book. A class worth participating in, he loves it!
Personality wise he is very nice. Teaching wise he is really bad. Requires perfect notes. Test are hard, he was 1 to 2 sentence answers or he calls them wrong. Contradicts him self often, for example he says "X" doesn't exist at al. In his next sentence he says "X" is very much around and everyone is effected by it.
Very tough. On test & quizzes he expects you to word the answers exactly like he would word them or else you get an "F". Required 2 books, only used one of them for 3 questions on one quiz and never again. Didn't even bother with the other book. Sometimes says some offensive and partially racist things
Very tough grader. Hypocritical teachings and lessons. Only used book twice for quizzes and nothing else. Tries to tell us that everything is economical and other than talking to others nothing is social. I taught my self sociology better than he ever could.
He teaches his opinion's about social "studies" and not the actual facts about social anything. Complains about messed up the younger generation is and how much better his homeland Kenya is. Complains about students low grades in the class and blames everything and everyone but himself for the low grades. Says some racist thing and never appolises
He is very hard to understand, spells and writes everything on the board. the midterm and final are take home but you cant find anything in the notes he states his opinion more then actually teaching. when someone says their opinion and he doesn't agree with it he will call you stupid. the midterm final and group project is the only three grades
Simply put, he doesn't have his stuff together. He gives homework and at the end of the semester tells you he won't count it in your grade. His grading system overall is nonsensical. Your answers on tests must be exactly how he or the book explains it, otherwise you are wrong. Avoid if possible.
I honestly think I am going to fail his class because his notes are hard to understand. His final is very hard!!! I have never gotten below a "C" for anything and this will be my first F. I have not missed one single class. Two major things for his class is the midterm and the final. Fail one of those and it's over. There's no homework.
Just take the notes word for word LITERALLY. It is not that bad every test he says write word for word from the notes. I suggest you type your notes i copy and pasted everything for tests and you only have two tests mid term and final both take home. But you must go to class. Also don't buy the text book until class. you need it for the tests.
Very hard to understand, he also doesn't understand you. His lectures are just him talking and it's hard to decipher what notes to take. His test questions don't make sense, and if answers are worded wrong, you don't get credit. He talks inappropriately which could make people uncomfortable and his SOC class has NOTHING to do with sociology!
The tests aren't that hard because he is extremely repetitive, the only hard part is that if it not specifically what he wants and nothing more he will mark the whole thing wrong. He's a cool dude, but he is just disorganized most of the time. Try to avoid him
I'm usual not one to tell people not to take a professor. But please don't take his class. Your grade is literal the mid term and final. He words on both of them horrible. He speaks broken English and has a heavy accent. Writes horrible on the board. And will yell at the class for no reason what so ever. So please save yourself the headache please
He has a thick accent, so it is hard to understand him at first. He tends to make jokes that may/may not offend people. He has a very strong opinion, don't question him. He is clear with what is expected. Take lots of notes. Work with your peers ALOT.
My favorite professor ever! I don't get all these bad reviews. He's the funniest guy ever! Impossible to fail unless you are completely incompetent! Only grades you on the midterm and finals, which are both TAKE HOME QUIZES. Homework & group project are extra credit. Just take all the notes, sit in front & participate and he'll love you! Trust me!
This man knows sociology like the back of his hand. Yes, his accent is thick, but he's hilarious and it's not hard to get on his good side. It's important to know that there aren't many grades, only the midterm and final, which are both take home, and he looks for textbook answers. If you copy his notes as they are, you'll be fine!
Great guy overall, funny and knowledgeable. But his grading criteria is very confusing, class is lecture heavy, very unorangized and loses many papers and also is a tough grader. He requires very specific answers on his homework and exams.
If you take his class, be sure having his notes! He only has midterm and final and all other assignments are extra credits. He did not organize his class well, at the beginning of semester, he told us we would have a group project, but at the end, he cancelled that and replaced by extra credits assignment.
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken out of about 30 college courses. Your final grade is based on two tests that are extremely difficult. He basically just teaches you his opinion as if it were factual. I highly recommend not taking any courses with this professor.
Prof. Otieno is a funny man. His grades are based on a midterm and final. All the other work he gives you is extra credit. If you need to speak to him in his office, he is very polite and tries to answer your question the best he can. I honestly thought that this class was going to be hard, but it was actually pretty easy.
The class is lecture based. Otieno will target people who are quiet. All tests are take home, but he is picky with answers. Makes large generalizations and assumptions about cultures and the people in the class. Prepare to hear a rant about racism and the upper class every day. He says many ridiculous things that may offend. Otieno is a nutty guy.
Funny in some parts but makes a lot of assumptions about cultures on very few facts. Explains how racism is completely fake but says all famous socialist from the past are 100% racist and hates poor people. Only grades on midterm and final, gets mad when NO one does the homework but then says it wont be graded then questions why did they do it?
Hypocritical about how racism in any form is not real then says all sociologist from the past are super racist. Grades only on midterm and final. Says homework will never be graded but then get mad when people don't do the homework but questions you saying "why do you do it when i said i wont grade the homework?" Never ever take this class!!
